There’s no membership fee, but there is special members-only pricing for everything.

The Crush Club is perhaps the Okanagan’s most generous wine club. You get “behind the velvet rope access” to the winery’s limited release and library wines; early access to summer concerts and club-only pre-concert receptions; recipes with pairing suggestions from the acclaimed Miradoro restaurant; and members-only events and parties at the winery and in Vancouver, Victoria, Calgary and Edmonton.

Crush Club members get a 10 per cent discount at Miradoro restaurant on food for up to six people, as well as preferential seating most times.

For example, the May 2018 Spring Pick Up Party saw over 135 club members come to the winery to pick up their spring cases and enjoy live music from Rob N’ Walker and paella from four different chefs, including Chef Jeff from Miradoro, each paired with a Tinhorn Creek wine.

The Crush Club discount is 15 per cent and it applies to all wines — plus all merchandise. Every new member receives a special gift when signing up for the Crush Club. The winery is releasing a couple of limited wines only for wine club members — an Innovation Series, essentially a sandbox to experiment with different styles. Becoming a Crush Club member is simple. “It’s as easy as receiving 18 bottles minimum a year, and who can’t manage to get through just over a bottle of wine a month?” says Tinhorn’s Shelann Sleegers. “Membership also makes a great gift for those wine-loving friends or family who are hard to buy gifts for; or you could split a membership with your neighbour or BFF. We have many members who do this.” The Perfect Pairing Live music and wine are a perfect pairing — just ask Tinhorn’s Crush Club members. The Oliver winery’s perennially popular Canadian Concert Series features performances under the stars in the spectacular outdoor amphitheatre, where concertgoers can enjoy wine and dance the night away. This year, the summer concert series' grand finale will feature the Rural Alberta Advantage — percussive folk songs about hometowns and heartbreak that propelled the Rural Alberta Advantage trio into the Canadian music spotlight. Tickets for the final show are $75. Reservations on the concert shuttle can be purchased at $20 per ticket. Events, Tours, Yoga and More! Tinhorn was founded with a focus on growing the best grapes, making great wine and having fun. That love of fun shines through in Tinhorn’s many popular events. This summer will also be filled with a number of other events at the winery for those who love fine dining and an active lifestyle. The Golden Mile Bench Vineyard Tour takes place August 17. The vineyard walk with Tinhorn Creek viticulturist Andrew Moon includes wine tastings, as participants learn about vineyard practices, sustainability and the new Golden Mile Bench sub-appellation. The walk is followed by an alfresco reception with wines and canapes by Miradoro. Tickets are $49 per person and must be purchased in advance, as space is limited. The winery will also host Yoga in the Vineyard on Saturday mornings throughout July and August at 9 am. The one-hour yoga class in the winery’s amphitheatre is good for all skill levels. Tickets are $10 in advance and $12 drop-in. There are several events happening specifically at the Miradoro, which is perched on Tinhorn’s picturesque vineyards and offers stunning views of the South Okanagan Valley wine country. The restaurant serves Mediterranean-influenced cuisine by executive chef Jeff Van Geest. Miradoro features weekly themed communal table dinners every Tuesday night, October to December. Dinners feature fare that is local, rustic, simple, straightforward and seasonal. The meal is $35 per person. Good Vibes AT THE VIBRANT VINE DAVID WYLIE

The Vibrant Vine has been growing to keep up with its popularity. For four years, it has held the top ranking on TripAdvisor for all BC wineries. That’s brought an increasingly large influx of visitors to the East Kelowna property, which Wyn and Marion Lewis opened as a “retirement project.” Another Expansion The couple’s passion for wine, art and music are all incorporated into the Vibrant Vine.

It’s not a slight difference — it’s radical.” The History Originally from Wales, Wyn and Marion Lewis immigrated to North America in 1975, first settling in Montreal. Over the next few decades they worked and lived in Canada and the US, while raising their sons: Phil, Tony and Peter. They eventually retired in Grand Cayman, but still searched for the ideal place to settle. Friends invited them to go skiing at Big White, and that’s how they stumbled on the Okanagan Valley. They moved to Kelowna in 2003 and purchased their East Kelowna property, which was originally an apple orchard.

“Last year, we had so many people coming we had to close the door several times!” said Marion.

They planted 8,000 vines in 2008 in very rocky ground, and had to use a pneumatic drill with a miner’s bit to penetrate the ground in what is now called Stoney Hill.

They’ve undergone several major expansions in the past decade. They’ve renovated a 1937 heritage building on the property — first to their house, then to a tasting room. In 2014, another expansion doubled the tasting room’s size. Still, it wasn’t enough to keep up with demand.

Their three sons, an artist, a musician and a techie, are all involved in their own unique way – from making the wine, to the art on the walls and bottles, to the technological 3-D wonders at the winery.

This year they’ve undertaken another major renovation project. A new, elegant and vibrant event hall is perfect for corporate and private functions, as well as workshops and classes. A larger gift shop will house all the “extra goodies” the winery offers. The Wines Demands for their wine demands more grapes and they are now planting another 10,000 Pinot Gris vines. Vibrant Vine has made some of the best wine in the world, winning the Platinum Award for the Best White at the 2013 World Wine Competition in Geneva, Switzerland. It’s the biggest wine competition in the world with more than 10,000 entrants. The Vibrant Vine Experience There’s more room now to display amazing new art pieces and there will be more tasting bars to ensure that every person who walks through the door gets space to enjoy the Vibrant Vine Experience. The winery’s tasting room is the only 3-D tasting room in the world. It weaves the family’s Welsh roots into the experience, with a hologram room where a dragon interacts with a bottle. Wine labels are 3-D and will use Enhanced Reality technology to offer even more of an interactive experience. “You’ll hold the iPhone up to the bottle and the art will come alive,” said Wyn. “I think the future of wine in the Okanagan is very much about the experience. When you pick up the bottle at home, you’re immediately reminded of the experience in the winery and your enjoyment becomes so much more than the taste of the wine alone. In our focus on the Vibrant Vine Experience, we think of

Like all wineries, the Vibrant Vine wasn’t exactly an overnight success. On their opening day in 2010 they only sold three bottles of wine. “Marion and I sat on the swing and when people came in, we assumed they were lost,” joked Wyn. Fun at the Vibrant Vine Now the winery has 41 tasting room staff, which the couple credits as key to their success. “Without them, we could never have maintained our ranking on TripAdvisor for four years as the No. 1 Winery Experience in British Columbia, and No. 2 in Canada,” said Wyn. The winery’s Phantom of the Villa event, held in the Italian Fountain Courtyard of The Okanagan Villa, is one of its biggest annual events and sells out each year. “The entire staff dress up in Phantom costumes and guests are given masks. The audience really enters into the spirit of the performance and they all look fantastic,” said Marion. This year is the fifth in a row for the Phantom of the Villa, happening August 16-18. It stars Peter Karrie, who has played the lead role in the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical The Phantom of the Opera in London, Toronto, Vancouver, Singapore and Hong Kong, Vernon’s Melina Moore and pianist Carol Colpitts. Each year they bring a magical experience to the Okanagan and many of the guests have come back year after year. As Marion puts it: “In everything we do at The Vibrant Vine, we never forget our one overarching goal for each person who visits. No matter what kind of day you’ve had, you’ll leave with a smile on your face.”

The Vibrant Vine began as a retirement project, and today, holds top rankings among BC wineries. This popularity caused some difficulty in the 2017 season. The winery had to close its doors on more than one occasion to incoming visitors as it was already at capacity. Now, with the winery’s expansion complete, they hope they never have to turn away anyone again! Within the year, they knew it wasn’t big enough, so they made plans to increase their space so visitors could enjoy the full Vibrant Vine Experience. Co-owner Wyn Lewis said he hopes this new expansion will take them through the next five years.

The Heritage Tasting Room now has three times the capacity as last year. There’s also a new retail area where guests are met and escorted to the tasting area. In addition to the tasting room, there’s a new Lakeview Lounge on the second floor with its kitchen and large outdoor patio overlooking the Chardonnay vineyard towards the Lake. Meanwhile the new Cellar, dug underneath the old building and parking area, will provide a breathtaking, candlelit, elegant location for VIP tastings, accessed via a dramatic tunnel entrance.

ROSLYNE BUCHANAN Executive Chef Daniel Craig joined the Delta Grand Okanagan Resort in January 2018. As changing seasons reveal the region’s bounty, he’s developed the new menu with unbounded zeal. No “babe in the woods” in culinary acumen, Chef Daniel’s delight with locally sourced produce, seafood, meats, wine, craft beer, spirits, honey and other artisanal finds brings refreshed joy to the kitchen.

Chef is new to Kelowna after leaving his position as Ritz Carlton Toronto Executive Chef. His passion for cooking began at age 12 while working at an Ontario café owned by a friend’s parents. At 18, he apprenticed at BC’s Fairmont Empress and Delta Victoria Ocean Pointe. Upon graduating with honours from Camosun College, he travelled and competed internationally, becoming the first Canadian chef to win a gold medal from the prestigious Chaine des Rotisseurs Jeune Chef Concours in 2006. Chef Daniel became the youngest executive chef in Delta Hotels’ history, on Delta Burnaby’s opening team in 2008, and later became executive chef, Delta Toronto. Among his many distinctions are the 2017 Marriott ACE Award for Best Executive Chef, 2014 BC Chef of the Year, and Team Canada member, 2019 Bocuse d’Or international competition. RICCO BAMBINO DARCY NYBO Ricco Bambino is a boutique winery at 1630 Pandosy Street. Its focus is on creating minimal intervention wines. Come and discover your new favourite wine in the bright and airy tasting room or on the cosy outdoor patio. Minimal Intervention Organic Wines Ricco Bambino wines are elegant and well-structured, expressive and beaming with a refreshingly bright and balanced acidity. To create minimal interventions wines, they ferment and age their wines in concrete vessels to allow microoxygenation to occur. This process allows the wines to breath and develop a rounder mouth and textural feel without the addition of any unwanted flavours imparted by using oak or additives. All the grapes used for their wines are organic, sustainably farmed and handharvested from biodynamic vineyards throughout the Okanagan Valley. Matt Dumayne is Ricco Bambino’s winemaker. He brings his philosophy of “less is more” to the winery’s minimal intervention winemaking ethos. After a gentle pressing, the grapes are transferred into stainless steel or concrete tulip tanks and fermentation begins with nothing more than the wild yeasts that naturally occur in the vineyards. This process is somewhat risky; however, it’s the only way to produce living wines that reflect the terroir where the grapes were grown. Small Batch – Great Taste Ricco Bambino is a small batch producer. The organic wines are made with passion and they place emphasis on the quality of the wine. The 2017 portfolio has four sparkling wines, two Metodo Classico Bruts and two Metodo Italiano sparkling wines. “You’re sure to love our Kicked out of the Country Club Brut and the Very Troubled Child Rosé Brut,” said Jason. In addition, they have an organic Cabernet Franc Rosé, a sustainably farmed Viognier and a zippy, Bianco-blend of Riesling and Viognier. Their single varietal organic reds include a Syrah, a Merlot and a Cabernet Sauvignon. It is rumoured this first vintage is fantastic, so be sure you get yours before it’s all gone. Future Land Based Winery Although it is newly opened in Kelowna, Ricco Bambino’s owner, Jason Alton, has already expanded his love of winemaking.

A Different Type of Winery “We want to ensure we always have enough organically grown grapes for our wines. Our longterm goal is to plant our own varietals organically,” said Jason. “To that end, we just purchased 12 acres in the Oliver area near McIntyre Bluff. It’s the gateway to the South Okanagan and we will be planting 12 acres next year. Ricco Bambino South will have a great tasting room too, so you can taste our wines in two locations.” Caviar? Cocktails? Come sip, sample and indulge your inner wine connoisseur. Indoors or out, you’ll soon discover this is a different type of winery. “I believe we are the only winery offering caviar,” said Jason. “Our patrons can order Northern Divine organic caviar on a potato chip with crème fraîche. They can also enjoy some crunchy Marcona almonds, Castelvetrano olives or potato chips on their own. It all goes great with our portfolio of expressive red, white, rosé and sparkling wines.” Despite the unique edible offerings, the Cocktail and Wine Bar was created to keep the focus on the drinks. “It’s reminiscent of a time when a bar was simply a bar. We serve classic cocktails, wine and bubbles, and offer a rotating selection of antipasti.” Cocktails include Italian spritzers and champagne cocktails that feature their whites and rosé bruts. Ricco Bambino also has a rotating beer menu — one local and one Italian — that changes weekly. Then there are the stars of the show… the wines. Ongoing Developments AT SPEARHEAD WINERY ROSLYNE BUCHANAN The excitement continues at SpearHead Winery as Grant Stanley makes his mark as winemaker/general manager with a newly constructed production facility that opened in July. 2020 Vision

FOR MT. BOUCHERIE WINERY

grape growing, Mt. Boucherie has emerged stronger than ever. Its wines were protected through the process under the custodianship of award-winning winemaker Jim Faulkner. With new ownership since April 2016, Mt. Boucherie has a bright future with a focus on revitalizing the staff, vineyards, property, winemaking facilities and brand. While the wines remained intact and won awards through the receivership, the extensive vineyards suffered some damage. The first order of business, explained general manager Jesse Harnden, was the creation of a greenhouse to propagate its own vines for a huge replanting of about 20 per cent of the 200-acres of vineyards. Vineyards are in West Kelowna, Okanagan Falls, Oliver’s Golden Mile and North and South Cawston. So far, Cabernets, Syrah and Pinot Noir have been replanted. Additionally, Mt. Boucherie’s Okanagan Falls vineyard begins the process of converting to organic next year and will be a trial for the remaining sites. The move is to eliminate pesticides and herbicides across all the properties. Mt. Boucherie has a five- to 10-year goal of becoming organic or biodynamic. Clearly, Mt. Boucherie Winery is investing in the health of its vineyards and people. In its rebirth, there’s a keen focus on the quality of its wines and its hospitality. The labels and packaging will also be redesigned and updated. The new leadership is proud that the “roots run deep” at Mt. Boucherie and they “own and manage some of the oldest vineyards in British Columbia, growing the best quality vinifera grapes on estate vineyards in the Okanagan Valley, Golden Mile Bench and Similkameen Valley.” Wine Experience Centre The estimated $10 million wine experience centre will reflect the Mt. Boucherie philosophy, taking full advantage of the scenic, lake view setting. The 15,000-square-foot building will have a restaurant and lounge with a huge balcony, barrel room and winemaking facility with updated equipment. Plus, there are three bed-and-breakfast units planned.

ROSLYNE BUCHANAN The vision is clear for Mt. Boucherie Winery as construction commences on its brand new experience centre scheduled for completion in spring 2020.

Named for the former volcano active more than 60 million years ago, Mt. Boucherie experienced its own volatility a few years ago and went into receivership. And just as the volcano created optimum soil conditions for

Extensive windows capable of opening wide, blur the transition from inside to outside and the extensive wraparound balcony leverages the views. The mix of timbers and local rock facing softens the contemporary concrete lines. Completed, it will be another jewel on the Westside Wine Trail. Until then, visitors are warmly welcomed to the quaint, existing wine shop. Daily tastings are offered complimentary from the extensive portfolio of wine. Visitors are encouraged to bring a picnic to enjoy the vineyard and lake views from the patio.

BLAKE ALLEN Vacations are rarely as relaxing as they’re meant to be. All the stress of rushing up and down the valley, down dead-end roads and along busy highways looking for the winery that your friends told you about. What was its name? Why not just escape all that hustle and bustle and enjoy the summer visiting an authentic slice of Italy right here in the Okanagan.

High along the West Kelowna Farm Loop, nestled at the end of a scenic country road, sits Ciao Bella Winery — and it is truly a little piece of Napoli. The winery is the long-held dream of the Fiume family, and their passion for wine shows in every little detail.

2017 Pinot Grigio: This classic off-dry white pairs perfectly with any picnic, and features a complex body with distinctly discernible notes of green apples and apricots complemented by a calming citric nose. 2016 Rosé: Ideal for both picnics by the garden or lounging on the beach, few wines so elegantly encapsulate life in the Okanagan like this humble rosé. This year’s vintage is defined by a fruitful nose that’s freshly out of the garden, and a prominent body of strawberries and rhubarb with a subtle hint of watermelon lingering on the back of the palate. 2016 Pinot Nero: Only recently awakened from its 13-month oaked slumber, this medium bodied red, made in traditional Italian style, is an ideal summer red. A rich aroma of Okanagan dark cherries follows from the nose onto the palate where it’s paired with smooth notes of dark chocolate. Ciao Bella was recognized in 2016 as the home of BC’s best Pinot Noir, and this vintage illustrates why.

One of the younger, but already well-established wineries here, Volcanic Hills Estate Winery, has tapped into this distinct terroir and built a prominent name for itself through award-winning wines that reflect this rich volcanic soil. Recently, there also seems to be a lot of gold that is found in these volcanic hills. Volcanic Hills Gold Volcanic Hills Winery is a must-stop for anyone passing through West Kelowna. They’ve won four gold medals at both the Okanagan Spring Wine Festival and the Great Northwest Invitational Wine Competition for their 2016 Single Vineyard Gewürztraminer, 2016 Gamay Noir and the Bordeaux-style 2014 Eruption, along with a silver medal for their 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon. And with the ever-popular 2017 Bubbly Gewürztraminer, the featured wine for July, and the 2017 Rosé, the featured wine for August, now is a perfect time to stop by, stock up for those warm summer evenings and taste West Kelowna’s unique, volcanic past. 2014 Eruption A heavy, full-bodied blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc aged for 18 months in French barrels, The Eruption bursts forth from the glass with forward tannins and soft, underlying notes of berries coupled with the rich aroma of cedar and lightly toasted oak. This is a wine that’s heavy enough for pairing with both grilled and smoked meats, perhaps from the patio of the Blu Saffron Bistro, while looking out over Lake Okanagan under the protective watch of Mount Boucherie.

Since officially opening on July 5, 2008, Kalala Organic Estate Winery has captured “the heart and soul of founder and owner Karnail Singh Sidhu, his family and the team he gathered,” says Tibor Erdelyi, winemaker. Erdelyi explains, “When Karnail immigrated to Canada in 1993, he found his electrical engineering credentials weren’t recognized. He jokes that you can’t call yourself Punjabi if you don’t have farming roots. So Karnail began working with his hands in orchards and vineyards. His hard work paid off and he was hired by Summerhill Pyramid Organic Winery.” After 10 years of managing Summerhill vineyards, Karnail decided it was time to open his own family winery. Says Erdelyi, “Karnail isn’t afraid to take a risk. Plus, he is such a personable guy and liked by so many in the wine industry, he had lots of help to get started.” That charisma enticed Erdelyi, who worked at Summerhill as retail manager, to join Kalala from its beginnings. “The desire to learn more about wine is highly addictive,” says Erdelyi, whose formal training is sound engineering. “I gained experience in winemaking while working with my uncle back in Serbia and I jumped at the chance to get deeper into it.” When asked, he acknowledges the many wine awards and accolades received by Kalala over the years are rewarding while, “at the end of the day the best award is our empty, sold-out shelves and enthusiastic Wine Club.” Watch for two special releases for the anniversary: a 2008 Pinot Noir and a onetime-release 2014 Malbec sourced from Mariposa — one of the oldest organic properties in BC, on which Karnail was the first to plant grapes. Architect Norman Goddard has designed three outdoor spaces for guests to enjoy that take full advantage of the Okanagan Lake view. There will be a licensed picnic area by the wine shop where guests can enjoy charcuterie and estate-grown VQA wines. From the picnic area, guests can wander a path down to the vineyard where there will be a deck surrounded by grass for vineyard experiences and tours. Two More Silvers Summerland Estate won two silvers at Okanagan Life’s Best of BC Wine Awards for its 78 2017 Rosé and 77 2016 Pinot Noir. Both wines are named after the ending digits of their planted longitude and latitude location. Only 173 cases of rosé were produced. The delicate notes of orange peel and grapefruit followed by a creamy bubble-gum finish remains a favourite of the staff, so they don’t expect it to be around for long. If you like a lighter style of Pinot Noir, Summerland Estate’s 77 2016 Pinot Noir is exactly that. Roughly 40 years ago, he was inspired to sell his real estate holdings in Port Moody, BC, and buy land to establish one of Penticton’s earliest vineyards. He did so when his close friend, the winemaker Tom Hoenisch, moved to Penticton’s first urban winery, the former Casabello Wines. Teresa fulfilled her father’s 1999 deathbed wish to take the vineyard business to the next level by licensing the winery. Glennallyn’s family had always helped in farmgate duties and the vineyards, so establishing the winery was a natural progression. To Teresa, “tomorrow’s heirloom is today’s treasure.” Teresa’s sister, Teena Murray-Christiansen, also worked hard in the family business. “In the early days before Teena had children,” says Teresa, “she helped plant, weed and pick rocks in both vineyards as we created, bought and planted the now Meyer’s family farm as well as Crescent Hill. These days, Teena enjoys drinking the family’s award-winning wines and dreams about the day she retires from her full-time job in Vernon to come aboard in a more active role.” While the growth and success of the Crescent Hill Winery business and Teresa’s health limit the hours she can spend in the vineyard, Teresa explains how time seems to slow down and become all about balance when you’re working with the vines. “To me it’s a nice way to live, and the prospect of passing it along to my daughter, Tysha, and son-in-law, Carson, is a pleasure,” she says. For her, the words of the Jim Croce song “Time in a Bottle” comes to mind along with the wish to make such days last forever so she can spend time with her family. Of course, the wine that goes into the bottles at Crescent Hill represents a lot of work and perseverance.

The Gewürztraminer, named “Glennallyn” in his honour, was awarded Double Gold and Best White Wine in Canada at the All Canadian Wine Championships, plus Double Gold at Sip Northwest. At the 2018 Cascadia Wine Competition, Gold was awarded to Curvy Gurl Chardonnay 2015; Silver to Dry Gewürztraminer 2015 and Glennallyn Private Reserve Gewürztraminer 2016; and Bronze to Cristal’s Fault Riesling 2015 – or as Teresa notes, four wines submitted, four medals received. Results were also rewarding at the Great American International Wine Competition, which attracted 1,400 entries from 200-plus wineries representing 19 countries, 36 states and four provinces. In it, Glennallyn Private Reserve Gewürztraminer 2016 and The Olde Orchard Pearl of Csaba Muscat 2016 took Gold; Hissy Fit Semi Dry Rosé 2016 took Silver; and Cristal’s Fault Riesling 2016 took Bronze.

NEW WINES WITH PLAYFUL NAMES

Today, Tysha and Carson are engaged in representing the wine. They’re involved in learning how to finish the wine, bottle it and take it on the road to get new customers, whether that means attending events to pour it or stopping into restaurants and liquor stores to introduce Crescent Hill wines. New labels are being introduced this season featuring the work of local artist Janis Blyth. Teresa says the idea is to create a classier presentation that better represents the quality of the wine inside the bottles. The first reveals will be on Hissy Fit, Consensual Chaos, Cristal’s Fault and Glennallyn Private Reserve. Of course, each of the provocative names has its own story and speaks to the sense of humour required to face some of the challenges Teresa encountered as a woman opening a winery. Watch for Vendetta to be released later in July — it’s a blend with Viognier and Verdelet that speaks to the “big pull out of the hybrid Verdelet” in the Okanagan’s past. A small tasting room debuted last year on the property and it’s open from 11 am to 7 pm, Monday to Saturday; and 1 to 8 pm, Sunday, through the high season. JENNA HICKMAN For those living in the Okanagan, fresh produce is easy to come by. It’s also easy to get delicious fresh sea food at Buy the Sea in Penticton and West Kelowna. They’ve been providing locals with fresh seafood for over two decades. “Coming into summer, our local waters provide a bounty of fish,” says Buy the Sea owner Mike Stokes. “Just the other day we started to get fresh sea asparagus from southern Vancouver Island. It’s very similar in appearance to regular asparagus, thinner than a pencil and very salty. A lot of people will chop it up to put in salads as a garnish.”

Up Close and Personal AT NARAMATA’S TOWNSHIP 7 VINEYARDS AND WINERY SUE HARPER It may be unassuming, but the commitment to producing fine wine is clear from the moment I enter Township 7 Vineyards and Winery in Naramata. I am steps from the vineyard and immediately feel part of a working farm where grapes are the number one concern. Inside, I’m greeted by Assistant General Manager Trevor Allen, who introduces me to a variety of elegant white wines, including the 2017 7 Blanc, an off-dry, aromatic white blend, and he gives me a sneak preview of the anticipated 2017 rosé. The highlight is the 2015 Reserve 7, a blend of three red Bordeaux varieties. Only 498 cases of this opulent wine were produced, so don’t miss out. As Trevor explains, “Both the white and red wines express the terroir of the fruit. At the restaurant, The Pecking Room Patio Grill, Chef Darin Paterson, owner of the renowned Penticton restaurant Bogners, has created a seasonal farm-to-table menu highlighting the very best of local flavours and produce. ROSLYNE BUCHANAN From the beginning, hands-on owners Larry Gerelus and Linda Pruegger didn’t shy away from trying something new for the region. With their winemaker sharing innovative inclinations, together they’ve followed their passion to gain a reputation as being adventurous while creating awardwinning wines. In 2011, Stag’s Hollow planted its Shuttleworth Creek Vineyard with many varietals new to the Okanagan. These varietals included two Italian — dolcetto and teroldago — and two Spanish — albarino and tempranillo. In the portfolio at Stag’s Hollow, there are also grenache and vidal (basis of the fruity wine Tragically Vidal that has gained a cult following). This intrepid attitude attracted an invitation from Italy in May to pour Stag’s Hollow 2016 Dolcetto and 2016 Muscat Frizzante with the same wines in Italy. “Eat. Drink. Rest. Rust!” RUST WINE CO. ROSLYNE BUCHANAN True to its name, Rust Wine Co. is continuing to embrace transformation, rejuvenation and change. This summer it is set to release a series of top-tier single vineyard wines, a local craft beer program, daily offerings on the barbecue, as well as an unmatched hospitality. Any one of these offerings would be a challenge for an established winery. However, with Rust it is more impressive considering it has been able to do this within its first year of operation. The single-vineyard wine releases are based on small-lot series of Syrahs and Merlots from the Rust estate which spans over an enviable 200 acres. Assistant General Manager Kane Morgan says, “We are tremendously lucky to have not only some of the oldest vines in the province, but also vines that are spread throughout unique vineyards of varying soil and microclimates, which have allowed us to create wines vinified identically to showcase a true sense of place.” This is no understatement: Rust is one of the few wineries uniquely positioned to express different BC terroirs as its holdings span Okanagan Falls, the south end of Cawston and Osoyoos and its home property on the prestigious Golden Mile Bench sub-appellation. As the perfect foil to the rich, single-vineyard red wines, Rust has just launched its summer barbecue program. “It’s been a huge hit,” says Morgan. “We really wanted to go for a backyard Dad-working-the-grill approach like you’d have at your best friend’s house.” The idea is perfect in its simplicity, with fresh local grilled sausages and Alberta beef tenderloins served on a cutting board with a bottle of Okanagan wine. Chef Collin Gilbert, a dad himself, was classically trained at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology, so even though the food is simple, there is no shortage of flavour. Truly, Rust is striving for far more than the standard winery experience. Rust now offers a selection of wines by the glass, bottles of beer, vineyard tours and private events which can be booked through info@rustwine.com. “We are super excited to break outside the box from the standard winery experience,” says Morgan. “The idea is to always keep things fresh and dynamic.” This includes Morning Mountain Yoga with local instructor Rachelle Welda scheduled 10 am to 11 am, on Tuesdays and Thursdays, July and August. Classes are drop-in only, $15 per person with a private wine tasting post practice. Winery hours are 11 am to 6 pm daily and extended to 7 pm on Friday and Saturday.

Destiny Awaits

AT KISMET ESTATE WINERY DAVID WYLIE Members of the Dhaliwal family followed their destiny to make great wines. Sukwinder Dhaliwal immigrated to Canada in the 1990s with a borrowed $5 in his pocket, and settled in the Okanagan Valley. He made ends meet by working in agriculture, eventually focussing on managing vineyards. Sukwinder, along with his brother, Balwinder Dhaliwal, learned to turn grapes into gold, growing fruit that became award-winning wines for numerous well-known Okanagan wineries. “That’s when we started thinking, something’s missing. We want to be at the front end,” said Sukwinder’s daughter, Neelam Dhaliwal. The brothers began purchasing property together on the side. Eventually, they couldn’t maintain the balance of growing their own grapes and working full time. They pivoted into managing their own vineyards and consulting for the industry. The Dhaliwals now grow many varieties on 350 acres, including rare grapes, like Grenache and Mourvedre. About 90 per cent of their grapes go to other wineries in the valley, and 10 per cent are used for Kismet wines — enough for about 6,000 cases. Kismet means Destiny “We’ve always worked to establish ourselves as a hard-working and determined family,” said Neelam, who is operations manager at the winery. “It’s been a dream of ours to share our labour of love and hard work directly with customers.” The word Kismet in Sanskrit means destiny. The language is used to good effect by the winery, which named its top red blends after the spiritual laws of destiny — Karma, Mantra and Moksha — and each tells a story of the Dhaliwals’ journey. New Releases for 2018 • Sparkling White — the winery will be putting out 200 cases of the dry sparkling wine, reminiscent of a citrusy cider; • Lotus Rosé — a mix of Cabernet Sauvignon and orange Muscat, like lotus blossoms blooming from muddy water; • Malbec Reserve — aged in expensive barrels, it’s a very intense and powerful flavour, with a bit of mint, and reminiscent of Argentinian wines Eat, Sleep, Enjoy Kismet winery is one of the few in the South Okanagan with a guest house. It’s designed with delicate Indian décor and includes a hot tub, fire pit and picnic area.

The Kismet bistro features the family’s secret recipes for authentic Indian cuisine. The response so far has been outstanding. Since opening, they’ve expanded the bistro to accommodate more guests and special events. They also have a beautiful space in the centre of the vineyard that can be reserved for private events. The wine, food and beautiful venue make a perfect recipe for spectacular events. “People are blown away at how well the wines pair with Indian food,” said Neelam. Last year, Kismet launched a wine club membership, which includes access to exclusive releases. They have been overwhelmed by demand.

In the north of Oliver, right off the highway as one drives south from Penticton, sits the perfect stepping stone for any wine venture into this internationally celebrated region. River Stone Winery is perched atop a small hill and watched over by what might very well be some of the friendliest winery dogs in the whole of the Okanagan. The winery is lined by carefully manicured gardens that are flanked by vineyards, both of which envelop a serene little patio. Award Winning Wines Specializing in the big red wines, for which Oliver is famous, this scenic little winery offers an impressive portfolio of award-winning classics such as Cabernet Franc and Merlot as well as two distinctly different versions of the Bordeaux-style blend, the Corner Stone, as well as the Stone’s Throw – so named because all the grapes used for blending are grown within a stone’s throw of each other. But while this family-run winery is best known for its full-bodied reds, it also offers a diverse selection of white wines as well as a Malbec Rosé for those extra hot Okanagan days. This beautiful little corner of Oliver is best appreciated with friends, sipping a glass of sparkling white Merlot at a picnic in the garden, while the quiet tumble of the river fills the momentary lulls in conversation. 2017 Sparkling White Merlot The name alone likely made you look twice. Who’s ever heard of a white Merlot before! This wonderful, effervescent summer wine is off-dry to the palate with subtle notes of stone fruits balanced with an herbal nose. Enjoy!

JENNA HICKMAN Desert Hills’ Black Sage Bistro Executive Chef Patrick Khatri is turning heads. The young Toronto-based chef just joined the Desert Hills’ team and showcases how the winery makes award-winning wine and top quality food. “He’s certainly a hard worker and his creativity is incredible. I would never have thought of the combinations he comes up with,” said Desert Hills’ marketing manager Trish Hahn. “He’s getting a lot of support from local chefs.” Khatri does an expert job combining traditional Indian flavours in a modern way, infusing World Collective Elements and Fusion. For example, at the seventh annual Pig Out! festival in Oliver, Chef Patrick presented Tandoori prawns with watermelon radish, achari yogurt crème, mango coulee with amaranth and cilantro garnish. Just the description is enough to make your mouth water. Khatri won the People’s Choice award for Best Dish and Best Pairing at the Osoyoos Oyster Festival — his first event in the Okanagan. His dish, named Fisherman’s Request, consisted of Tandoori halibut cheeks, lemongrass and sage potato puree with lemon radish, paired alongside Desert Hills’ award-winning Viognier. “It is a very eclectic, yet focussed and interesting menu,” says Hahn. “It’s fairly compact with daily specials so we can showcase what our region offers.” Desert Hills has a new outdoor tent. It now hosts weddings at its breathtaking vineyard. At the end of July, visit the winery to enjoy the annual Summer Savour event, where wine will be paired with local meat, cheese and chocolate! You’ll have to wait until August for Desert Hills’ 18th annual BBQ and Blues event. All food will be prepared and smoked in house by none other than winery owners Randy, Jessie and Rajen Toor. Once again, this season’s sensations, the Sauvignon Blanc and Gewürztraminer-Schönburger, both did outstandingly well with a Best of Class/Gold and a Gold. Another Gold winner was the 2017 Rosé Cabernet Franc-Merlot, also mentioned in the last issue. This wine features two varietals — Merlot and Cabernet Franc — and is made for drinking outside on a sunny day. At the recent 2018 British Columbia Best of Varietal Wine Awards, a competition that brings together 26 different varietal categories, 550 wines and 14 judges, the Sauvignon Blanc took home the award for Best of Varietal and the Gewürztraminer-Schönburger picked up a Gold. Grape Vine News DARCY NYBO In a recent editorial, I described how the wineries and growers across BC give back to their communities and the province. In April of this year, the Naramata Bench Wineries Association (NBWA) held two fundraisers, one in Victoria and one in Vancouver. “We are pleased to announce that our two NBWA Annual Spring Wine events in Victoria and Vancouver supported the raising of significant funds for two organizations we sponsor,” said Tina Baird, marketing director of NBWA. “We are grateful to everyone involved in these two events.” According to Baird, Wine for Waves (Vancouver) raised $19,000 for Ocean Wise Seafood programs and ReWined (Victoria) raised $50,000 for Make-AWish BC and Yukon. Even better news is that the money has already been put to good use. A little girl named Chloe has been granted her wish. Chloe, a bright six-yearold who loves being active, was recently diagnosed with kidney cancer. Her wish was to go to Disney’s Aulani Resort in Hawaii. Thanks to donations from people like you, Make-A-Wish was able to grant Chloe her wish and bring a smile to her face. This has brought hope, strength and joy to her and her family during a time when they need it most.

LESLEY BUXTON Owners Fred Farinha and Alex Nunes were both born with an understanding of wine. It’s in their history and blood. As a boy growing up in a Portuguese village known for its wine and olives, Alex recalls climbing inside the wine barrels to clean them and being paid a candy. He says that kind of experience “sticks with you.” Fred grew up on the South Okanagan land where Adega now sits, surrounded by his family’s orchards which specialized in tree fruit. He remembers his family making wine with an old press and laughs recalling how they used Californian grapes. Nowadays Fred and Alex tend to 28.5 acres of vines, monitoring the grapes carefully, but with minimal interference. They grow grapes that are balanced and reflect the unique terroir of their vineyard. Though the winery is only seven years old, tree fruit has been grown here since the 1940s. Both owners feel this influence is reflected in the flavours of their wines. Take for example the hint of apple in their famous Riesling. All their wines are known for being fruit forward with a dry finish. This brand of old world charm combined with new world innovation is the secret of their success. The estate is committed to quality over quantity, producing only 4,200 cases a year. This season they’re releasing both the 2016 Merlot and Cabernet Franc early. The Merlot is delicious and tastes of blueberry and plum. The Cabernet Franc has notes of raspberry and cherry with a peppery finish. The new releases express the smoothness and balance that the estate’s wines are celebrated for. Remember this is small batch winery with a dedicated following so make a visit soon to avoid disappointment. You won’t regret it. These people really know how to make wine.

CLOS DU SOLEIL EARNS A TRIO OF MEDALS AT DECANTER WORLD WINE AWARDS LESLEY BUXTON They’re celebrating at Clos du Soleil! This small artisanal winery recently won three medals at the Decanter World Wine Awards, the world’s most prestigious and influential wine competition. The three silver medals were awarded to: Capella 2016, the winery’s premier white, an elegant Bordeaux blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon; Signature 2014, a flagship blend of red Bordeaux varietals; and the 2013 Estate Reserve Red, the pinnacle of the estate’s portfolio, designed specifically to highlight the estate’s unique terroir. Multiple wins like this in such a high-level international competition are rare. This is a significant achievement that speaks to the quality of their entire portfolio of wines. All of these award-winning wines are available at the winery’s tasting room. Be forewarned — the wines are crafted in small batches so act now to avoid disappointment. These wines may soon be rare commodities. Guests can also enjoy these wines in the newly licensed picnic area [pictured]. Try one of the winery’s self-serve picnic lunches and relax outside. OLD WINES – CURRENT VINTAGE PRICES Owner and winemaker George Hanson doesn’t want his customers to have to cellar his wines and wait for them to age so they can enjoy them. Instead, he ages the wines to perfection in the caves, and then sells them at what many consider current vintage prices. For example, the Seven Stones flagship wine, Standing Rock Meritage, is the current vintage from 2011 and is sold at a very competitive price. VANESSA VINEYARD:

Location is Everything LESLEY BUXTON Tucked on a hillside overlooking the stately Similkameen River sits Vanessa Vineyard, a small artisanal vineyard that specializes in growing five grape varieties for its limited-edition reds. The vineyard only produces 3,000 cases a year — available exclusively online, at their tasting room and at high-end restaurants like Hy’s, the Hotel Georgia and the Wedgewood Hotel. Vines grow everywhere on the 74.55-acre estate, row after row planted in accordance with the terrain, rooted in the rocky sloping landscape. The natural incline provides good air drainage and minimizes risk of frost. Each element of the west-facing vineyard — its topography, climate, and soil — contributes to creating grapes perfect for crafting outstanding wines. Ask winemakers what the key is to making great wine and they’ll tell you it’s great grapes. What they might not share is the expertise required to get there. Like in theatre, those working behind the scenes at a winery set the magic in motion. A decade ago, the estate was considered too difficult to plant because of rocky soil formed by glacial meltwater and deposited by fluvial fans. With advice from vineyard developers Robert Goltz and Richard Cleave, this obstacle became an unforeseen advantage. The rocks were crushed and a special planting techniques employed. Suki Sekhon and John Welson began as grape growers and now, six years later, they are vintners. Their grapes are exceptional, characterized by their minerality. The reason: the rocks under the roots of their vines. Legendary winemaker Howard Soon, who’s been involved with the winery since its inception, spotted the exceptional characteristics of its fruit early on. Intrigued by the possibilities, he came out of retirement for the opportunity to be part of the team. He’s responsible for crucial decisions such as the timing of the harvest and the method of pressing — the kind of decisions that define Howard’s celebrated style.

Editor's Note The wines of British Columbia continue to delight and surprise those who have the pleasure of tasting them. I fondly remember the day I tasted my first BC Merlot. Before that fateful day, I was a scotch and vodka gal and my only experience with wines was the inexpensive sweet ones that resulted in youthful hangovers. Every now and then, usually during the winter holidays, a well-meaning dinner guest would bring a bottle of their favourite “inexpensive” wine for dinner. Needless to say, with those types of early wine experiences, I was not a wine drinker. It was the fall of 1995 when I tasted my very first Okanagan Merlot. It was love at first swirl, sniff and sip. I watched other people around me, then swirled the deep red liquid and watched as the legs clung to the sides and slowly made their way down the glass. I can still recall the delicious aromas of fresh tobacco, black pepper and dark cherry that wafted up and made me feel a little light-headed. Then I tasted it. I turned to my sister and said, “Why has no one ever told me about this before!” From that day on, I was hooked on BC wine. I wanted to try everything — red, rosé, white, sparkling, port, sherry, dessert. I wanted to experience them all. Every time I discovered a new favourite, I would champion it to everyone I met. Over the years, I’ve had the pleasure of tasting wines from the Okanagan, Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland. I recently tasted three wines from the Lower North Thompson, and I’m looking forward to my visit this summer to the Shuswap and Kootenays to taste their wines. I love how each area of BC has its own flavour profile and how each winery makes the absolute best of what it has. Whenever I have friends over, I love to pour them a glass of my latest find and watch their reaction. The next time you bring home a few (dozen) bottles of your new favourite BC wines don’t show your guests the label. It’s always fun to see how close they get to guessing where the grapes were grown, and which winery the wine is from. I’ve done it with some fellow BC wine lovers and was quite surprised how close we could get! I continue to joyfully find new wines that I love, and explore wineries throughout the province. My list has grown from a top 10 to a top 40 and it grows longer every year. However, no matter how many new favourites I find, I will never forget my first.

Another Significant First INITIATED BY SUMMERHILL PYRAMID ROSLYNE BUCHANAN Since founder and proprietor Stephen Cipes established Summerhill Pyramid Organic Winery more than 30 years ago, he and his team have lobbied to enhance the quality, enjoyment and pleasure of purchasing luscious British Columbia wines. A long list of firsts for the industry include legislation to allow food to be served in wineries and, recently, for wineries to be able to serve all alcohol products in their eateries, not just wine. Now, perhaps the most significant first is to introduce a real Canadiana Small Plates Food Hall. Says Cipes, “We are launching authentic, ethnic, organic, wine-paired small plates for those on the move or for order-to-go with quick service. This complements our fabulous casual-gourmet, organic, 200-seat restaurant.” Under the supervision of Executive Winery Chef Jeremy Luypen, the Food Hall features a new glass and wood kitchen, picnic tables on the view decks and access to interior seating. Family Friendly Picnic Fun “The idea is to make it family friendly, where you can mix and match like a fun, family picnic. We’ve partnered with ethnic culinary experts to provide a variety of authentic organic specialties on a rotating basis, featuring the heritage of Canadians (First Nations, German, Syrian, Polish, Russian, Mexican, Japanese, Indian, Chinese and more). We’re a country of ex-patriots and love the soul foods from our native lands,” noted Chef Luypen and Steve Cipes. What a boon to Summerhill’s neighbours and visitors to source organic fast food as “cash-and-carry” to go. Or patrons can settle in at an on-site picnic table to savour the view with the food. Imagine the pure joy of exploring true ethnic foods featured each day complete with suggested wine pairings, and knowing each is organic and locally sourced! New Name – Great Organic Dishes The sun has set on the original name of the restaurant, The Summerhill Sunset Organic Bistro. It is now reborn as Summerhill Organic Kitchen. While sunset dining is spectacular, those views across the organic gardens and vineyards of Okanagan Lake and beyond are stunning any time of day and the new name holds the essence of this extraordinary manand-nature experience, perhaps unique in all of Canada. Naturally, Summerhill Organic Kitchen serves food grown and raised by local organic growers and producers, including its own permaculture-style organic gardens overseen by Gabe Cipes, biodynamicist/permaculturist. The seafood is part of the Ocean Wise sustainable program, and all proteins are sustainably raised. Staff can tell you exactly where

the food on your plate was sourced. Of course, Summerhill’s extraordinary organic wines are featured, as well as many organic wines from around the valley and the world, along with fresh organic beer on tap and an array of luscious local organic spirits. Wine Awards Latest wine accolades were received at the Okanagan Spring Wine Festival where the 2016 Riesling was awarded Best Varietal and Cipes Brut received Gold. That’s 26 years of Gold in a row for Cipes Brut. It holds the distinguished honour of being the single most awarded wine in Canada. More Room to Taste Great Wines! The opportunities and settings for tasting Summerhill wines have expanded. In addition to the refurbished main wine shop, there are many new VIP tasting rooms: The Robert Bateman Gallery tasting bar, The Gazebo, The Warehouse sit-down tasting verandah and The Dining Deck-view Bar.
