The Top Cat Team is ready to show you wine country!

TOP CAT TOURS ADDS TOURS AND PICK UP POINTS kanagan’s Top Cat Tours are led by wine experts who live right in wine country and have either attended accredited wine schools or worked in the vineyards, cellars or wine rooms of some of Canada’s top wineries. Instead of just acting as a transportation service and merely moving you along the wine trail on your wine tasting journey, your guide will give you insights into each winery and information on the various wine regions of the valley. They will be able to answer questions varying from the area’s history to real estate values. Top Cat Tours are known for their focus on more intimate, unique winery visits. Most tours are typically six hour excursions and include a gourmet lunch. Pick up and drop off is right where you request, there is no need to show up at a central location, guaranteeing everyone can enjoy the day without worrying about any time behind the wheel. There are eight air conditioned bus-style vehicles in Top Cat’s fleet and they guarantee that every day each and every tour will run. Departures had previously been just Penticton, however now the

company has added Kelowna and Osoyoos as pick up points. Your journey could take you to the Naramata Bench, Summerland’s Bottleneck Drive, the Southern Okanagan, Similkameen, OK Falls, Kelowna or West Kelowna, or create your own tailored tour stopping at the wineries of your choice. Upon request, custom tours can be arranged to include experiences such as walking through the vineyards, a private tasting with the winemaker or barrel tasting of unreleased vintages. A popular tour this season has been the “Crossover Tour” that includes stops in Summerland and then a trip over to the Naramata Bench with lunch along the way. Wine guests based out of Kelowna may choose the West Kelowna wineries or the other side of Kelowna and trips out of Osoyoos can spend the day in the Similkameen. There are at least four wineries on the tour and often five if time permits and these all inclusive trips range in price from $90-$130, and always include lunch and all tasting fees. The only time you will need to bring out your wallet is perhaps to purchase

a special bottle of wine or two to remind you of your journey. Top Cat Tours does a half day option for just $55 and will pick you up after lunch and shuttle you to areas such as Naramata, OK Falls or the Bottleneck Drive, however the full day is needed to get into the Similkameen or to Osoyoos. The company’s buses hold 24 people, but they usually never go past twelve to 14 ensuring you have plenty of room to stretch out and there is the option of creating your own experience; you can have the whole bus to yourself when you book for 8 or more. Smaller groups can travel via the tour company’s chauffeured Ford Explorer, popular for couples celebrating anniversaries or those requiring tailored experiences. Whichever tour you choose, you are guaranteed to be pampered! There is always water, and Top Cat Tours even carries umbrellas although the chance of rain is low in the Okanagan’s Desert Climate. Top Cat Tours can also be rented out as a charter service for wedding, school, or corporate events, just call for pricing. ~ Cassandra Anderton B.C. Food & Wine Trails • JULY/AUGUST 2014 • Page 3

A EUPHORIC RUN IN KELOWNA WINE COUNTRY f ‘Euphoria’ was a brand, it would undoubtedly be named “Destination Races Kelowna Wine Country Half Marathon.” This is a run that dreams are made of and attracts those with a passion for not only lacing-up but for exploring beautiful wine-country places at a good pace and where the finish line is graced with an abundance of fine wine. In September 2013, with the support of Tourism Kelowna, Kelowna became the first Canadian city to host the renowned Destination Races Wine Country Half Marathon Series. The events sell out regularly in their U.S. based wine-country settings of Napa-Sonoma, Santa Barbara, Northern Virginia, Oregon (Willamette Valley), Healdsburg, CA and Temecula Valley, CA. The hugely successful inaugural Kelowna race included a beautiful and moderately challenging route which started at The Vibrant Vine in East Kelowna, meandered past breathtaking vineyards, orchards and expansive vistas of Okanagan Lake and culminated at Waterfront Park with a wine and music festival, where runners and their guests mingled to share stories of the race, whilst sipping wines from Kelowna’s finest wineries. Kelowna lawyer Christy Lovig was one of those passionate runners and is excited to run again in the 2014 race. “The events put on by Destination Races are truly class acts, and it’s an honour to be part of the family with the Kelowna Wine Country

I

Half Marathon.” Christy helped train a group of runners through Fresh Air Experience in Kelowna and proved her skills on the local roads, finishing in 3rd place and taking home prize money and wine. “It’s fantastic to combine such a beautiful course on our home turf with the excitement and energy of the Wine & Music Festival - it’s more than a race, it’s an experience! And what better way to tour our wine country than by running through it! We live in paradise, and I’m thrilled that the Destination Races organizers agree,” comments Christy. Runners and wineries are now gearing up for the 2014 Kelowna Wine Country Marathon slated for September 6. The event weekend, which spans from Sept 4-6, provides ample opportunity for participants to fully explore and experience all that wine-country has to offer. There’s a pre-race reception at Quails’ Gate Estate Winery and a pre-race dinner slated for the new Kelowna Yacht Club. After the race each participant receives a functional finishers medal and Riedel wine glass good for tasting at the Wine & Music Festival presented by Food & Wine Trails Magazine (at Waterfront Park) followed by a post-race party at Manteo Resort. With the race fast approaching its time to start training for the fine art of sweating, swirling and sipping! SLOWLY TOWARDS A CANADIAN WINE CULTURE

A

A

By Allison Markin

t the time of writing, the second anniversary of the amendment of Bill C – 311, which was changed to allow Canadian consumers to purchase Canadian wine for personal use from any province in the country, was being marked. In two years, not much has changed. British Columbia, well on the path to modernizing its liquor laws, albeit a bit slow on some fronts, is an open province. We are permitted to purchase wines in reasonable quantities from other provinces and have them shipped to us to enjoy. Manitoba is open, and we are awaiting changes in Nova Scotia. But that’s it. Every other province and territory is closed. When we think of other provinces here in BC wine country perhaps we only think of Ontario, but a look around Twitter reveals wineries of some sort – from grapes to other fruits, even mead – in almost every province.

Even Newfoundland has a winery or two. And it’s there where a significant change in the” free my grapes” campaign may be born. At the end of June, FedEx will face legal action for shipping BC wine into Newfoundland, the wine itself being referred to as contraband. The amount that was shipped is unknown, but if we assume it was a friendly Newfoundlander wanting just a few bottles of BC wine, certainly that can’t be that big a deal? Having attended recent conferences around the world on wine tourism, one of the barriers I speak to is the lack of reasonable access to Canadian wines for Canadians. If you lived in the Hunter Valley in Australia, for example, and were not allowed to order wine from the Barossa, would you revolt? The development of a Canadian wine culture is frequently written about and debated. What is our

wine culture? What should it be? At the moment, it is steeped in policies born back in the Prohibition era. Quite frankly, it’s an embarrassment to explain to wine lovers from around the world that a wine made in British Columbia may not be available next door in Alberta. The champions of the free my grapes movement, most notably of the Alliance of Canadian Wine Consumers, need you as the consumer to now speak up. The federal statute has changed, the provincial attitudes have not. Perhaps the issue in Newfoundland will shake up the movement. Alberta has also recently taken a step backwards when it comes to accepting interprovincial shipments. Want to enjoy a glass of Canadian wine from New Brunswick? Take action to free my grapes. Learn more at www.freemygrapes.ca.

LARCH HILLS – FRESH, UNIQUE AND DECIDEDLY DIFFERENT

W

ine Country doesn’t B end at the traditional boundaries of the Okanagan. In fact, just as you leave the North Okanagan you’ll discover one of the northernmost gems in BC Wines, Larch Hills. As the warm weather hits, it’s an ideal time to taste Larch Hills’ sparkling wines. Their

Ortega, with its citrusy notes, is off dry and an ideal summer sipper. The Sparkling Rosé hints at strawberry and berry notes. It is a little sweeter and very fruity. Both wines sell for $17, making them a terrific bargain. As Proprietor Hazel Manser says, they are “happy wines!”

One of the first wines expected to sell out at Larch Hills is their 2013 Riesling, with its grapefruit notes and ideal balance between sweetness and acidity. Their Reds, too, are very popular so now is the time to get them. The Foch Reserve is very rich with a black cherry flavour, and low in acidity. Robust, dark and rich, it’s a very easy wine to drink. Pair it with a barbecued steak.

`Limburger is the perfect German style summer red,`` says Hazel. `We say it is berry delicious! Drink it on its own or with salmon or pasta dishes.`` All Larch Hills wines are grown without irrigation, resulting in smaller, more flavourful berries. Drop by and sample some unique and delicious wines. ~ Deanna Rainey

FRESH IDEAS GROW FROM THE GROUND UP AT BASKET CASE PICNICS

treet food and gourmet picnics from the Okanagan’s Basket Case Picnics are fun-filled experiences that have gained increasing popularity with customers. “They allow us to really stretch our culinary creativity,” says owner Kelsey Galt. “We are perpetually evolving our products and services with the harvest and good advice from our suppliers, while constantly researching and developing fresh ideas, quite literally ‘from the ground up’.” Catering has become a huge part of Basket Case’s business. Customers’ initial experience with the company through picnic, winery or food truck service has led to them being increasingly sought after for wedding, corporate and special or community events. They are now booking for 2015 with some dates still available this summer. As more wineries partner with Basket Case, more ideas come up as to how to enhance their visitors’ experiences. “So we really have two key clients,” says Kelsey, “our partners and the ultimate consumer.” These creative partnerships have resulted in special events for Basket Case including Diner en Blanc, Splash

The award-winning Discover Wines carries a delectable assortment of wine-friendly artisan food products including cheeses. “We’ve expanded our cheese selection to include selections from Upper Bench Winery & Creamery in Naramata and Terroir Cheese from Enderby, which may very well be the newest artisan cheese producer in BC.” Large bottles (magnums and double magnums) are available at Discover Wines. Winemaker Eric von Krosigk with the nitrogen generator

WORLD CLASS BUBBLY AT SUMMERHILL PYRAMID WINERY e make bubbly as well as anywhere in the world,” winemaker Eric von Krosigk said at Summerhill Pyramid Winery’s first ever Bubbly Boot Camp in April. And that was before Cipes Brut was named the Best Sparkling Wine of the Year at the 2014 All Canadian Wine Championships. He backed up his statement by serving Gold Medal-winning (in France, no less!) Cipes Rosé, which was the only North American sparkling wine named on the Top 10 Sparkling Wines list in the 2013 Effervescents du Monde®. Alongside the rosé was the now sold out Cipes Gabriel, named best bottle fermented wine in the world, and Cipes Ariel, a 1998 vintage that brought home a Gold Medal from the 2012 World Wine Awards in Chicago, Illinois. With those and countless other awards (winery founder Stephen Cipes says Eric is probably the most-awarded winemaker in

W

Canada), von Krosigk will never be accused of resting on his laurels. This year, Summerhill Pyramid Winery has made the news with his efforts to reduce sulfite levels in its wines. Sulphites (sulphur dioxide) might be described as both bane and boon to winemakers. They occur naturally and are also typically added during the winemaking process to preserve the wine’s flavour, colour and character. Wines with high sulfite levels can contribute to headaches and nasal congestion in some people, though. To that end, Von Krosigk has taken on the role of mad scientist, experimenting with ways to reduce sulphites, in the vineyard and the winery. In the past year he worked with a Kelowna machinist to design a nitrogen gas system that would reduce the contact of oxygen throughout the winemaking process. Oxygen speeds the aging of wines, turning them brown and wiping out desirable fresh fruit flavours.

In what might be a first in BC, Summerhill has created a sealed, low-pressure system that displaces air with nitrogen throughout the winemaking process. “We are on a low-sulphite program at Summerhill, which means we use little or no sulphur wherever we can,” von Krosigk continues. “However, we will not sacrifice a wine to oxidation if it does need some. We hope at some point to put an ingredients list on the bottle with a single entry: grapes. That is our goal.” “In 2012 the project was pilot tested and troubleshooted,” Summerhill CEO Ezra Cipes says, “and in 2013 the results are evident in the resulting wine quality. All of the 2013 aromatic whites, Ehrenfelser, Riesling, and Gewürztraminer, were made with this technology, and the quality and freshness speaks for itself. We are very proud of these wines.” ~ Lorne Eckersley www.winetrails.ca

kanagan Spirits has been crafting world-class spirits in the Okanagan Valley since 2004. Original distilling can be traced back to the Greek alchemists in the first century, but in British Columbia’s distilling history they were one of the very first. Okanagan Spirits now has 25 different products; all made with 100% BC ingredients. At the latest Worlds Spirits Awards in Klagenfurt Austria they were named Distillery of the Year and well as scoring the highest points in history for their Blackcurrant Liqueur - it won Spirit of the Year at 97.7 points. After 10 years in Vernon, Okanagan Spirits has outgrown its production and tasting facility and has broken ground on a new 16,000 sq ft distillery not far from the original. With the new liquor laws this artisan is further focused on producing top quality ingredients BC fruits and

crops and are looking forward to the 2014 growing season. The new distillery will have a 20-foot tasting bar and lounge, a presentation room and many more stills and tanks enabling them to ramp up production while still keeping their artisan mandate. Recently Okanagan Spirits released a BC Hopped Whisky that was barrel-aged for five years and is the first hopped whisky of its kind, but sadly only 300 bottles were available. Part of the “Final Proof Master Distiller Series”, this whisky is part of a series of small batch whiskies that will be released in batches. Last year the distillery released single malt, but again the quantity was so limited there had to be a lottery just to win the right to buy the liquid gold. *See cocktail recipe page 54. ~ Cassandra Anderton

THE WESTSIDE WINE TRAIL EXPERIENCES FOR ALL TASTES

T

he Westside Wine Trail, located in West Kelowna, is as much about wine tasting as it is about the deep and fascinating blend of unique experiences. The lake views at every winery are spectacular, some of the most photographed in the Okanagan. Dine vineyard side at one of four winery restaurants or enjoy a picnic or a glass of wine on their patios and in their picnic areas. Enjoy the art on display at many of the wineries. Partake in events this summer like yoga in the vineyard every Sunday at Mt. Boucherie Family Estate Winery, the Summer Concert Series at Mission Hill Family Estate or a special winery vineyard dinner. All eight of the wineries on the Westside Wine Trail are family-owned, many multi-generational. Each of them is very unique, from the small farm gate experience to the large estate with stunning architecture. The four wineries with restaurants are Volcanic Hills Estate Winery (Blu Saffron), Little Straw Vineyards (Barrel

Top), Quails’ Gate Estate Winery (Old Vines) and Mission Hill Family Estate (The Terrace). Mt. Boucherie, the local dormant volcano, has primed the land for growing grapes. The soils are unique in that they are loaded with mineral deposits as well as glacial till, volcanic rock and large boulders. It is no wonder that some of the wineries have “deep roots”; some of the oldest vines in the Valley are planted in their vineyards. Three of these wineries—Rollingdale Winery, Beaumont Family Estate Winery and Kalala Organic Estate Winery—are organic. The Westside Wine Trail is small and manageable—the wineries are all in close proximity, some within walking distance of each other. If you had one day to experience what Okanagan wine country is all about, the Westside Wine Trail will give you the full experience. Visit www.thewestsidewinetrail.com). ~ Dona Sturmanis

QUAILS’ GATE GETS READY TO CELEBRATE!

A

fter 25 years of being amongst BC’s – and in fact Canada’s – most highly prized wineries, Quails’ Gate is getting ready to celebrate their silver anniversary with a summer full of delicious events. From August 15-17, Quails’ Gate will present “The Lake,” an opera written by Susan Allison, the original homeowner of Allison House. Located on site at the winery, Allison House was built in 1873 and was the first home on the west side of Okanagan Lake. Allison House will also be home to a new shop as of early July, where you can purchase wine by the glass or sundry items…and lots of great foods for your on-site picnic at Quails’ Gate. Music lovers will be thrilled to learn that Royal Wood will be presenting a concert at the winery on September 13. With a new album about to be released, Royal Wood will be backed up by 7 performers from the Okanagan Symphony. Tickets can be purchased for the concert alone ($60); a stand-up recep-

tion and the concert ($100) or for a real treat, a fully paired wine dinner with the concert for $170 per person. With only 400 tickets, this will be an intimate event with great viewing for everyone. And speaking of treats, Quails’ Gate’s ‘don’t miss’ list this summer includes their 2013 Gewürztraminer, made in the traditional Alsatian style with intense floral and spicy aromas. This outstanding off-dry wine features aromas that are evocative with rose petal, sandalwood and lychee notes. The 2013 Chenin Blanc, one of Quails’ Gate’s most popular wines, displays the characteristic crisp lemon and lime exuberance and the palate is wonderfully balanced with crisp citrus and hints of green apple. Pair it with a chilled seafood platter or a crisp chopped salad. These days visitors are also looking at new ways to enjoy the views and tastes of Volcanic Hills. E

ach summer, tourists flock to the valley in search of memorable wines and experiences. Some prefer the familiar while others seek undiscovered gems off the beaten path. Adventurous souls are richly rewarded when that path leads to Kalala Organic Estate Winery. Five-minutes off Hwy 97 near downtown West Kelowna leads visitors into the Upper Bench’s serene orchards and vineyards, home of Kalala’s farm-gate style winery. Inside, find great wine selections with ample choices in style, varietal and price (table wines range from $11 to $30/bottle) featuring monthly in-store specials. Taste internationally awarded wines (recently their Chardonnay and Merlot Icewines won at France’s Chardonnay du Monde and London’s International Wine & Spirits Competition, respectively). Great reasons to visit, but Kalala’s most unique attraction are the amazing personalities behind the tasting room bar. JOINING THE PARTY AT DIRTY LAUNDRY VINEYARD

M

arcia Vandermey has every wine-lover’s dream job. She’s been the front-ofhouse wine shop manager at Summerland’s immensely popular Dirty Laundry Vineyard (DLV) for several

years. It’s fun, it’s beautiful, and she loves greeting visitors from all over the world. “Right from the moment people walk down the path, they’re in a good mood. They’ve had a

chuckle about our larger-thanlife “laundry sheets” and clothes-pegs... they’re ready to have fun”, explains Marcia.” When guests walk in our door, they feel they’ve been invited to the best party. Wine shop The sounds hosts Tarra (L), of laughter, Marcia and Luke in full live music on character on the patio (see patio weekend entertainment listings online: www.dirtylaundry.ca), even clips of a host singing ‘Kay Syrah Syrah’ – just people enjoying themselves.” The boutique Bottleneck Drive winery is stunning: the patio is teeming with happy people, lush gardens, festive red umbrellas, fountains, lingerie and wroughtiron work – it’s like a Moulin-Rouge summertime terrace in Paris. “People look at the patio, they see this European-inspired turn-of-thecentury wild-west flair – the sights and sounds of the KVR train steaming by, people enjoying our deli-

style picnics overlooking the vineyards...it let’s your mind wander to those days-gone-by. Each guest becomes a part of that scene, so the next group walking in says, ‘Hey, look at how much fun they’re having!’ and join in the fun. DLV’s a bustling tourist destination, so Marcia recommends guests belly-up to the bar for their complimentary tasting before heading to the self-serve deli. NEW BRANDING AT LITTLE STRAW!

W

hen it’s time again to indulge in the well-loved flavours of Little Straw Vineyards, keep your eyes open for some changes. The signature tastes born of thirdgeneration winemaking remain intact, but a successful run with an artist series of labels has come to an end and the Slamka family decided to shift directions. “We’ve done a re-branding—we are still the same Little Straw, but now we have bright primary colours on our labels to represent each of the wines,” explained the winery’s Trevor Mayhew, noting that the colours on the bottle’s label relate to the tastes within. There’s a blue to go with the Sauvignon Blanc, representing the river rock feel and the Rosé is a fuchsia. More colour-blocking will come as further bottling rolls out. Mayhew explained the re-labelling www.winetrails.ca

isn’t just motivated by aesthetics, either. With liquor laws being revised, there’s now a chance to get Little Straw onto Albertan store shelves, and a bit of eye-popping colour may be just what it takes to win over a new audience. B.C.’s, after all, is well aware of what the winery can do. The Slamkas bottle two versions of their Sauvignon Blanc, to meet consumer demands. A dry version bottled under the La Petite Paille name is particularly wellloved. “It’s crisp and refreshing on the palate, and in large demand in the Vancouver restaurant market,” said Mayhew, adding that the wine’s acid level pairs nicely with ginger and soy. The Little Straw Sauvignon Blanc is sweeter, and has a more widespread audience. ~ Kathy Michaels

TRUE GRAIN BREAD – A SUMMER WINE STAPLE uly is the time for sipping whites on patios and tasting reds on wine tours with friends. But after a glass or two, many of us get the urge to nibble on a fresh slice of rye or bite into a chewy baguette. Why not satisfy this craving with a stop at True Grain Bread? True Grain Bread is one Vancouver Island’s greatest gifts to the Okanagan. The bakery’s flagship store is located in Cowichan Bay. In 2012, co-owner Todd Laidlaw opened a second location on Summerland’s Main Street, bringing with him his European style breads and baked goods – much to the delight of hungry foodies, families and flour connoisseurs. Laidlaw fondly refers to shopping at his bakery as an unparalleled bread experience. Here’s why: when you enter, its warm and welcoming – a perfect place to meet for coffee or stop for a snack between wineries. Then there’s the aroma of delicious breads – many made with locally grown, organic heritage and ancient grains including Emmer, Spelt, Khorasan, Rye and Red Fife. You’ll likely hear the hum of a slicer or the traditional Austrian stone mill working away. Finally,

J

feast your eyes on the thoughtful display of French croissants, almond croissants, pain-au-chocolat, cinnamon swirls and German pretzels. “It’s not just about the final product. We want to share with customers the kinds of grains we’re using, how we’re using them and where they’re coming from. Not a lot of bakeries focus on ancient grains,” says Laidlaw. “When people hear our story – they understand how truly unique we are. Bread is the heart of what we do.” Laidlaw says just like learning about how wine is made, people want to know more about the bread they’re eating. “Most bakeries order flour made in a big factory not really understanding how old it is. At True Grain, I’m milling organic flour today that the bakers will use tonight. The flour is most nutrientrich when it’s just been ground.” A visit to True Grain Bread really is an educational experience, and an ideal complement to your wine adventures this season. You won’t leave hungry or empty-handed. Now to find some local cheese and meats… ~ Erin Trainer

THE INCREDIBLE DELONG STUDIO EXPERIENCE

N

estled between Sunoka Beach and Summerland’s Bottleneck Drive lays a hidden treasure: DeLong Studio. Anita and John DeLong’s stunning silversmith jewellery and accessories boutique has captured discerning eyes for years. Perhaps you’ve seen their display cases at Thornhaven or 8th Generation Vineyard or Penticton’s VQA store? That is just a peek of DeLong Studio’s bountiful array. “Who would expect this selection and quality here? It’s the biggest secret in the valley,” says Sue, who works alongside the DeLong’s greeting guests and making jewellery. The DeLongs have an intimate knowledge of the stones, their origins, and the designers who produce them. Although many pieces are created on premises, many are hand selected from world-class limited production designers they are proud to support. “We don’t buy mass production from a buyer with a satchel of jewellery in his car,” says proprietor/designer Anita. Truly, DeLong Studio’s oneof-a-kind designer quality rivals the world’s best. The DeLongs have

noticed an interesting psychology in the choices people make, depending on if they are buying for themselves or for gifts. “Women specifically enjoy rings and bracelets – we women love what we can see on ourselves without a mirror, whereas men tend to buy necklaces or earrings for their loved ones.” Taking a break from wine touring and enjoying other pleasurable activities can make one’s Okanagan vacation truly memorable. DeLong Studio offers more than jewellery, it’s a lasting memento to cherish for years to come. “Once people discover us, they return every year,” explains Anita. (check out their reviews on www.tripadvisor. ca). Each spring heralds new styles of rings, bracelets, necklaces and more, with additional jewellery displayed throughout the seasons. In-house production never ceases and you never know what surprises await. From traditional to modern, from demure to bold, there’s something for everyone’s taste. “You have to come here to believe it all!” ~ Sarah Willard

GOLD MEDALS GALORE AT PERSEUS WINERY old, 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon. Gold 2011, Cabernet Franc. Gold, 2012 Merlot. Gold, 2013 Pinot Gris. According to CEO Rob Ingram, “The goal of Perseus Winery is to produce approachable wines of character and distinction from some of British Columbia’s finest vineyards.” Judges at the 2014 All Canadian Wine Championships certainly agree. Add a Bronze Medal for the 2012 Syrah to the list and that makes five medals from six wines entered, a remarkable showing matching the highest numbers of gold medals from any winery. “Each of our winemakers has won awards since our first vintage,” Rob said. “I think that says a lot about the quality of our vineyards.” Three more medals and a commendation at the Decanter World Wine Awards (2011 Cab Franc, 2010 Invictus, 2011 Cab Shiraz and 2010 Cab Sauv) would seem to confirm the assertion. With renovations complete at the Perseus Winery info centre, a great visitor experience awaits at the gateway to the Naramata Bench this summer. A private tasting room for education has been added, info displays are in place (in Mandarin, too!) and guests can now enjoy Perseus wines and food from local Brodo restaurant on the deck.

Drop in and sample new vintages of Syrah and Chardonnay, and ask if the new sparkling wine has been released just yet! Meanwhile, the expansion plan for the Terrabella group of wineries continues, with the Black Swift Winery opening next summer on Mount Boucherie Road in Kelowna. In the meantime, watch for the opening of a smaller, rustic, enoteca style tasting room, which will be a site where new ideas are explored, with less traditional brands, fun marketing and creative wine styles being introduced. Winemaker Jason Parkes and assistant Brody Issac will be making wines for Perseus, Black Swift, and the Enoteca’s various small, one-off brands. With many recent success and a lot of creative people involved in trying to make a fresh splash in the Okanagan wine scene, the Terrabella team is sure to turn some heads in the next few years. ~ Lorne Eckersley

ELEGANT, DISTINCTIVELY VARIETAL WINES AT MORAINE WINERY

N

aming Moraine Winery did not happen by chance. The Naramata vineyard is situated on a glacially formed shelf – or moraine – overlooking Okanagan Lake, on land filled with rocks laced with minerals that impart complex, much sought after flavours to grapes. Owners Oleg and Svetlana Aristarkov celebrate their vineyard’s unique geography by naming their wines with distinctive terms like Cliffhanger, Twin Peaks, Pink Mountain and Red Mountain. “We know we have a great location, sitting on land pushed here by a glacier,” Oleg says. “It’s perfect for what we want to achieve—making quality hand-crafted wines in small batches. We take what the vineyard gives us and maintain those flavours right into the bottle.” Winemaker Jacq Kemp has proven to be the right choice to help Oleg and Svetlana in their obsession with quality. In her home country of New Zealand she earned international recognition of her Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Gris, all grapes she gets to work with at Moraine. Here, she strives to keep her focus on what the vineyards have to offer, creating balanced, elegant and distinctly

Instead, she allowed the juice to run free—not the best way to maximize production, but ideal for what Oleg and Svetlana are looking for—intense flavours and aromas. Jacq takes a gentle approach to Malbec, too, using handpicked fruit to make a hauntingly aromatic and beautiful

On September 13 it hosts the Annual Naramata Bench Wineries Association Tailgate Party. Poplar Grove’s Barrel Hall, ideal for groups of about 20, can be booked for company meetings, teambuilding, birthdays, rehearsal dinners and small weddings. Says Tasting Room Manager Laura Veljacic, “With its large screen, some avid fans once booked it for a private

play-off party for the NHL finals.” Beauty runs more than skin deep at Poplar Grove. It is home to the contemporary cuisine of Chef Bruno Terroso at the award-winning Vanilla Pod Restaurant, which takes its last seating at 9 pm. Linger there longer as the city lights twinkle. In the Tasting Room, discover the depth of beauty in those luscious wines from new releases to proven award winners. In the 2014 Pacific Rim Wine Competition, the Cabernet Franc 2011 was awarded Gold. At the 2014 Canadian Oyster Wine Competition, the best Chardonnay went to Poplar Grove’s slightly-oaked 2012 vintage,

JUDI SKINNER NEW GM AT THERAPY VINEYARDS! e all know that sometimes a change is just what the therapist ordered and at Therapy Vineyards, the owners are following that advice. They wrote their own prescription for growth by hiring Judi Skinner as the winery’s new General Manager. You may recognize Skinner’s name. She’s spent the last eight years initially as operations manager for Dirty Laundry Vineyard migrating to sales and marketing manager. Skinner jokingly says, “So far, I’ve had a great career in the wine industry but now that I’ve aired out all my dirty laundry, I’m ready for some therapy.” Until recently, Therapy’s general partners had been taking turns running the winery on a part-time basis. This year, they agreed – if they wanted to expand – they’d have to hire a full-time general manager. “Judi has been very successful at growing Dirty Laundry’s sales, and

W

we’d like to do the same,” says managing partner Rene Massinon. Therapy currently produces 9,000 cases per year but can produce much more. The partners hope to increase that number to 15,000. “Judi will help us get there. Everybody knows and respects her. She’s exactly what we’re looking for,” says Massinon. Judi is a trained viticulturist and has several years of experience in wine sales and marketing as well as winery operations. She’s looking forward to using all of her talents: “I’ll finally be able to put my degree in psychology to use,” she laughs. Massinon says Dirty Laundry and Therapy have a lot in common. In addition to making award-winning wines, both wineries focus on ensuring their guests have fun. Skinner adds, “I’m hoping to take Therapy to the next level. I’m hard working and target driven; I love puns, comedy, and educating people about wine.”

(L-R) Winemaker Steve Latchford with NEW General Manager (congratulations Judi!) Judi Skinner and Rene Massinon, Managing Partner.

Skinner starts July 1, and just like Therapy’s signature Freud series, there’s no doubt she’ll be making a few Freudian slips along the way! Therapy is also celebrating the recent release of its annual artist series bottle (Dog Days of Summer)

and will be unveiling more new “prescription” labels for its wines. For information on winery events, including musical performances by singer-songwriter duo Aidan and Mandy, visit therapyvineyards.com. ~ Erin Trainer

NEW WINE CLUB AT HOWLING BLUFF

S

Father/son team at Howling Bluff, Luke (R) and Daniel Smith.

o you’ve tasted Howling Bluff wines and want more? Join this new club. The Howling Bluff Wine Club, that is! Owner/winemaker Luke Smith has introduced a threeoption club sure to satisfy what is quickly becoming the “Howling Bluff urge.” “Even though we have had great success with past vintages including some major awards, I am now really proud of all the wines,” Luke says. “After 10 years I now feel that year after year I can deliver a selection that will feature wines consistently equal to the best wines around.

And we can do what few others can--we will have a wine for wine club members only, our Summa Quies Semillon.” Members can choose from options that focus on reds, whites or a mix. And, of course, membership has many other benefits. Check the web site for details. Summer promises to be a busy one for Howling Bluff, in the run-up to the 2015 harvest. The wines will be part of Naramata wines being featured at the Best of the West at the Harmony Arts Festival in West Vancouver on August 6th and at the fabulous BC Pinot Noir Celebration on

ith a year under their belts operating the Naramata Heritage Inn, owners Toni and Julius Bloomfield couldn’t be happier with the results. Bookings are strong, the Bistro and Cobblestone Wine Bar are thriving under the leadership of chef AK Campbell and a dozen weddings are schedule for this year, with more already reserved for 2015. “And staying open over the winter helped us maintain our core staff, which is a real bonus for us,” Julius says. “The winter was good. We tried lots of things and some worked, some didn’t. But we do know that this a great location for a romantic getaway and folks in the Okanagan love to take advantage of the short drive.” Summer months see the return of Jazz Thursdays in the Cobblestone, where a growing pool of local musicians is supplemented with guest artists, and even the wonderful voice of a Cobblestone server. Also, Chef AK has introduced his new summer menu, which he changes up to feature locally grown produce in season. In the spring, Toni and Julius were busy with renovations at

what they describe as “a very complementary property”, the Naramata Courtyard Suites, just a short walk away on Robinson Avenue. Most of the rooms are 1and 2-bedroom suites with kitchenettes, decorated with retro colours that create a funky and fresh look to the 1960s-era property. “I’m really happy with how they look,” says Toni. “They are a great alternative for visitors looking for reasonably priced accommodations in this wonderful village.” ~ Lorne Eckersley

LEGEND IS BORN IN THE NARAMATA HILLS

O

ne of the exciting new entrees to the Naramata wine tour isn’t wine at all - it’s spirits! Opening this year, Legend Distilling is the collaboration of husband and wife team Dawn and Doug Lennie, who bring their previous business expertise to their new family owned operation. With craft distilleries exploding in the US, this seemed like the right opportunity and when the right property in Naramata became available they jumped at it. Part of the fun and adventure with creating their spirits is to tell a story with each one. Located on the former site of the local doctor, it only makes sense that one of their first offerings is the ‘Doctors Orders’ Gin. Served in fun jugs reminiscent of prohibition, the gin and their ‘Shadow in the Lake’ Vodka (named after one of the most famous legends of the Okanagan) are the first spirits to be offered this summer. With a spectacular patio overlooking Okanagan Lake and an amazing distillery with gorgeous copper and stainless stills-they offer tours for the thirsty for knowledge and a cool tasting room

using repurposed materials that offers tastes for those thirsty for artisan spirits. Legend will add whisky after it’s aged in barrel for three years, and fruit infused spirits using local ingredients as they come into season. “One of the exciting things for us is the fun of experimenting with our local ingredients,” says Dawn. We can’t wait to see what future Legends are born! ~ Terry Meyer-Stone

AN EXTENSION OF THE MEYER FAMILY

F

rom the moment they receive their hand-written welcome note and carefully chosen selection of well-loved reds and whites, it’s clear to new members of the Meyer Family Vineyard wine club that they’re getting more than a tasting experience. “Our wine club is an extension of the Meyer family,” said Monica Horning, wine club coordinator, noting that Jak Meyer and Janice StevensMeyer take pride in sending a personal token of welcome. Three times a year —February, June and November—club members are shipped a selection of new releases or limited-availability wines. And as their taste buds are tantalized by reds and whites that are fast gaining the attention of industry heavyweights, they glean insider knowledge about the ins and outs of the winery. “Consumers really get to be the first to know what’s going on when they’re members of the wine club,” Horning said. Awareness of MFV wines is growing quickly, however, and they fully

expect that many wines will only be available to wine club members in the near future. Those same members also get discounts on the winery’s tasting events, where they get the bonus of speak-

ing with fellow connoisseurs who want to discuss their shared expertise. MFV released their Micro Cuvee Pinot Noir and their Micro Cuvee Chardonnay to club members at the beginning of May and at an event that followed, those who had first sip converged to imbibe and forge bonds with fellow oeno-

philes as well as Meyer clan. Both these wines were just reviewed with an amazing 92 points by Beppi Crosariol in The Globe and Mail this May. That openness, in addition to tantalizing wines is what sets MFV apart from their contemporaries, she said. Being a part of the wine club is like an invitation to join the family. ~ Kathy Michaels

LIQUIDITY WINERY & BISTRO – A MUST-VISIT NEW GEM IN OK FALLS he newest winery in Okanagan Falls has everyone abuzz. From the serene and welcoming tasting room with it’s cool white and grey interior framing the spectacular views, the amazing patio, the onsite Bistro to the art collection that inspires and the lovely wines that keep you there--this is a winery not to be missed. Pride and passion in everything they do is obvious. The Bistro under Chef Robert Walker that offers farm to table local cuisine is seamlessly meshed with the tasting room so that the experience of visiting Liquidity flows like its name. (I highly recommend the duck prosciutto flatbread!). Art installations greet you from the moment you pull through the black wrought iron gates and

grace every wall, much of it from the private collection of President and part owner Ian Macdonald. It’s hard to say whether it’s a world-class boutique winery that is also an art gallery and bistro, or a complete art experience that also just hap-

pens to serve great wines and food! Open officially this year, the tasting room has drawn record crowds; their bubbly is already sold out. Winemaker Matt Holmes hails from Australia and brings a wealth of international experience and an adventurous spirit to the wines that have quickly garnered acclaim.

“We not only want people to appreciate Liquidity and what we offer,” says MacDonald, “but we are passionate about this little gem of a wine region – Okanagan Falls – that has been largely overlooked. We feel it is one of the best wine growing areas of Canada.” Wines from other Okanagan Falls wineries are proudly displayed and offered on the menu in the Bistro. This kind of long range vision is what has prompted so much support for Liquidity. And they do fun, unique things! Like their ‘Clusterfest Artists Festival’ coming up July 26th to August 3rd featuring a clusterfest of original artistry straight from the Fringe Festivals, performing on an intimate stage in the winery production facility. Tickets are now available from the winery and online. Welcome Liquidity – a full experience for the senses! ~ Terry Meyer-Stone

In the heart of Okanagan Falls wine country, Liquidity is situated between the vistas of Skaha Lake and Vaseux Lake. At the Bistro our mission is to pair our wines with fresh, local ingredients that share the same terroir. Explore our wines, our bistro and our gallery of fine art all set against one of the most stunning views in the Okanagan Valley.

THE INCREDIBLE RIESLINGS OF WILD GOOSE VINEYARDS ongratulations to Wild Goose Vineyard’s (WGV) winemaker Hagen Kruger and his son, assistant winemaker Nikolas Kruger for their 2013 Mystic River Pinot Blanc winning both Double Gold at the All Canadian Wine Championships (ACWC) and Best of Varietal at the Okanagan Spring Wine Festival. Additionally, their 2012 Classic Riesling received the distinction of being the top dry Riesling at the Riverside International Wine Festival, leading to a prestigious accolade from the International Riesling Foundation. “It’s a real honour to receive these awards,” says GM Roland Kruger. “We’ve been producing Riesling since 1984, since day one. Our vines are really coming into their own. We’re so impressed with the flavour profiles.” The Kruger family has recently launched their “Vintner’s Club,” WGV’s first wine club chock-full of great incentives. The family is encouraging visitors to come by the wine shop, learn about the wine club and take advantage of a variety of tasting room specials, such as exclusive library wine releases and tasting room only wines. Additionally, WGV’s Smoke and Oak Bistro is officially up-and-running, having kick-started on May long-weekend to rave reviews. Southern comfort soul food served with traditional German

The second vintage of the Cinq Blanc, the ultimate summer wine, shows incredible Waldorf fruit salad aromas with a healthy dose of white peaches thanks to this year’s higher Viognier content in the blend. The debut vintage of Sauvignon Blanc is crisp and refreshing with aromas and flavours of Granny Smith apples, minerals, flowers, herbs, and stone fruits. The Riesling is off-dry but well balanced with beautiful apples and floral notes all over it. The Gewürztraminer shows lychee, rose petals, perfume, and grassy notes but unlike other Winemaker Anthony Buchanan & Trina Estin examples of this varietal, no particular aroma is dominant or overbearing which creates a beauti- thony. “It’s just deadly.” With a nose ful and complex set of flavours that of blueberries, black tea, and graphmakes this wine exceptionally enjoy- ite and a palate of cherries, baking able. Summer 2014 ummer is here and the farm is in full swing. Our planning and preparation are now being put to the test as we execute the ideas that were easy to strategize about in February, but are not always so simple to apply in June. The first sign that spring is turning to summer is when we turn the irrigation back on. With almost 700 acres of farmland and three wells drawing over 3000 gallons of water a minute, this endeavor is not to be taken lightly. Our water comes from a deep aquifer below the Okanagan River and is designed to protect the river’s Salmon Habitat as the river passes next to the farm. As a Salmon Safe Certified farm our water practices are part of an eco-certification program

of agricultural practices designed to Pacific salmon habitat. So turning on and managing our water is a big deal. With our water in place, all thoughts turn to composting. The piles of organic matter that have been decomposing away in our compost piles are now ready to be spread on the farm. With the fields plowed and the vineyards pruned the compost is spread throughout the farm providing the rich nutrients and natural pesticides that are the backbone of organic farming. Once we have prepped the fields we turn to our tunnels. Recycled aluminum irrigation has been bent to form hoops that we cover with plastic creating long tunnels for crop production. These passive greenhouses increase humidity and protect

WINE & ART AT THE VINE GLASS RENEWAL RESORT

he Vine G l a s s Renewal Resort owners Roger Hol and Jyl Chegwin have added a new team member to their team. Jan- Roger & Jyl ice Uebelhardt comes to the Vine Glass from Fort Langley, BC and will be taking care of the day-to-day administration of the resort. “Projects like this take time,” says Janice, who had helped Roger and Jyl prior to officially joining the team this past May. Janice will also be the point of first contact for guests, as she’ll be handling the bookings and reservations for the guest suites. Three luxurious guest suites are available for booking and are located in a separate building that looks over the pool and hot tub patio. All rooms are spaciously appointed with a king-size bed and private balcony overlooking the Similkameen River. Relaxation is the key here and each room is exceptionally serene. Each room at The Vineglass is themed according to the

striking paintings about wine by artist Michael Godard that appear in each room. Room names like “Paradise”, “Corked”, and “Devilish” add an artistic dimension to the guest experience. If the images really grab you, you can grab them. “The paintings are also for sale,” says Janice, who will have the prints shipped to your home address. AWARDS AWARDS AWARDS FOR CHURCH & STATE WINERY! t’s been an incredible award season for Church & State Winery; they’ve nearly had to rearrange the winery to accommodate their medals. Very fitting for the wine producer as they celebrate their 10 year anniversary. Starting with a win for the Platinum Award for their 2010 Cabernet Franc at the Wine Press Northwest Judging, and most recently a Double Gold, Best in Class at the All-Canadian Wine Championships for their 2011 Coyote Bowl Malbec, Church & State Winery wines have certainly earned many wine judges’ attention. Other highlights include a Gold at the Decanter World Wine Awards and a Gold, Best of Class at the Pacific Rim International Wine Competition for the 2011 Coyote Bowl Syrah. SUMMER IN A GLASS AT SILVER SAGE WINERY

S

ummer is upon us and it’s time to get out and enjoy the South Okanagan. Make sure when you’re out and about, you stop in to Silver Sage Winery just south of Oliver where the shop is open daily from 10 to 6. Silver Sage has some wines that are great for warm evenings on the patio. The 2013 Sunset is a blend of white wine, cranberry and raspberry and it is so exuberantly pink it looks like a rosy glass of joy. Summer in a glass! Elena recommends it partially frozen and mixed with vodka at sunset. A new release for summer is the 2012

The Passion Pinot Noir. The nose is rich with cherry and vanilla notes followed by an intensely fruity palate with a long, soft finish. The perfect dessert wine to keep handy in your fridge is the 2013 The Pearle. A Portstyle fortified wine made from black currants and blackberries, this wine is filled with intense berry flavours and would be the perfect finish to any meal. Enjoy it on its own or with a cheese platter. Make sure to include a visit to Silver Sage in your summer wine tour. ~ Courtney Fossett

BURROWING OWL A DELICIOUS SUMMER EVENT LINE UP

Double Gold Medal for its 2011 Cabernet Franc at the All Canadian Wine Championships is yet more proof that one of BC’s most respected wineries continues to the lead the way in quality. Burrowing Owl Estate Winery also brought home medals for 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon, 2011 Syrah, 2012 Chardonnay wines, as well as 2011 Athene, a luscious Syrah-Cab Sauv blend, in continuing evidence that nothing is more important to a winery than great vineyards. In the Sonora Room Restaurant, where guests have the option of dining al fresco on patios that afford stunning views of the Black Sage Bench, executive Chef Brock Bowes keeps his menu fresh to celebrate the best in

local produce. He’s even contracted to purchase all of the produce from one nearby grower! Even with a steady stream of customers coming to enjoy the Sonora Room in the summer months, Chef Brock likes to take on events that offer new challenges. “For the first time in a long time we will be participating in Okanagan Feast of Fields,” he says of the event that will be held on August 17th at the Okanagan Lavender and Herb Farm in Kelowna. He will be at home in the Sonora Room kitchen, though for a Visa Infinite Dinner on September 5th, where top caliber chefs from Vancouver, Calgary and even Montreal will join him. Each chef will prepare a plate for what Chef Bowes describes as “a primo event with some of the best

food to ever come out of this kitchen.” High praise, indeed! Visa Infinite Dinners are designed exclusively for Visa Infinite cardholders. In May Chef Brock was making plans for a local chefs dinner to be served family style in the vineyard. “I’m all about doing events and promoting this great restaurant,” he grinned. ~ Lorne Eckersley

GEHRINGER BROTHERS WINERY

– AWARD-WINNING WHITES AND REDS!

A

fter 28 years in the game, it is forgivable to hold the opinion that Gehringer Brothers Winery on the Golden Mile just south of Oliver is a great white wine

winery. It is true that their whites, particularly their Rieslings, are regularly recognized for their excellence. However, it would be a sad thing indeed if you failed to look beyond the surface and see what they had to offer in other areas. The current vintage of their Optimum Pinot Noir was recognized as the Best of Varietal at the Okanagan Spring Wine Festival. The Optimum Pinot Noir is the reserve tier of two Pinot Noirs offered by the winery and at $20.99 per bottle it is a fantastic bargain. The colour is the rich red of ripe cherries and the nose offers toasted coconut, vanilla, butter and baked cherries. On the palate, there is a hint of smoke with notes of vanilla followed by a cherry liqueur finish. Another notable red is the 2012 Private Reserve Pinot Noir at only $15.99 per bottle. The colour in the glass is a deep cherry with a nose that exhibits almond, cherry and vanilla notes. The palate is dark and dusky with more almond, vanilla and cherry. Taking the road less travelled is often rewarding in unanticipated ways. A visit to Gehringer Brothers can be one way to reap those rewards. The Okanagan and Similkameen Valleys have become known for their excellent use of vinifera grapes to produce world class wines. Gehringer Brothers Winery works with well -known grape varieties like Chardonnay and Merlot, not to mention

Winemaker Walter Gehringer

Pinot Noir, but they also grow less common varieties like Schonburger, Auxerrois and Ehrenfelser and have been making wines with them, with much success, for almost three decades. Make sure that you include Gehringer Brothers Winery in your itinerary when you next visit the South Okanagan. ~ Courtney Fossett

WELCOME ANDREW WINDSOR NEW WINEMAKER AT TINHORN CREEK VINEYARDS

I

t reads like the dream story of every winemaker. Young man earns a science degree in Ontario, then adds a Master of Science in Oenology in Adelaide, Australia. He gets his hands-on experience making wines in McLaren Vale, Northern Rhone, Marlborough, Niagara and the Okanagan/Similkameen regions of British Columbia. And then the offer comes. Andrew Windsor is now listed as the winemaker for Tinhorn Creek Vineyards, where he works under the direction of founder and winemaker extraordinaire, Sandra Oldfield. Oldfield, whose name has become synonymous with BC wines, has given herself a promotion, assuming the title of President/CEO. “I feel like I’ve finally come home,” Andrew says, sipping a glass of wine at his temporary home in Penticton. “I had visited the winery before and I knew it was a good spot and a good business. So this is an awesome opportunity, to work with Sandra, who has had 20 years working at the same location

with the same grapes. “It’s also amazing to work with the other key players, like Andrew Moon (Tinhorn Creek’s viticulturist/ vineyard manager since 2009), who contribute to the success of the business.” Originally from Ontario, Andrew didn’t know just how to get involved in the wine industry. “But I liked drinking wine and learning about where they were made—that was the beginning of my curiosity.” He had a stint of selling wine in Ontario and met Jamie MacFarlane of The Ice House. Next thing he knew, Andrew was called out in the middle of the night to pick frozen grapes. “I didn’t even know what to wear!” Now, eight years and four countries later, Andrew has a dream job at one of the country’s most prestigious wineries, and the chance to work with an acknowledged master, with access to some of BC’s best grapes. “This isn’t a dream, right?” he laughs. ~ Lorne Eckersley

WELCOMING TRANSITION AT TERRAFINA RESTAURANT

T

errafina at Hester Creek prides itself in greeting the changing seasons with joy enhancing its Tuscan menu with the freshest farmto-table ingredients. With this same excitement, owner April Goldade is approaching the latest transition of Chef Natasha Schooten moving on to the restaurant at The Grist Mill and Gardens in Keremeos. “We were sad to see Natasha go and wish her all the best in her new adventure,” says April. “It is great news for the Similkameen region to welcome a chef of her ability.” The transition was opportune with Chef Jenna Pillon having joined the Terrafina culinary team and the timing is perfect for Jenna to step into the restaurant chef role. April explains, “We are excited for Jenna and how she will bring her bright, fresh ideas and leadership skills in this position.” The team is working diligently developing the summer menu, which will be launched at the end of June. With the revisions in BC liquor laws, Terrafina looks forward to being able

to offer and showcase some of the local craft breweries and distilleries. “We’re anticipating a fun selection of seasonal beers and beverages to complement our menu this season,” she says. With summer comes an amazing roster of events in collaboration with the Oliver Osoyoos Winery Association. “There’s music on the patio at Hester Creek, participation in the Similkameen BBQ King at The Grist Mill and the energy of our wine touring visitors.” Leo Buscaglia noted, “Change is the end result of all true learning.” This philosophy resonates at Terrafina where April sums up the transition, “Overall, with change comes great opportunities and the whole team is excited for this season and being part of the ongoing growth of the South Okanagan.” What remains constant is the comfortable Old World charm in the stunning setting reminiscent of a Tuscan landscape. ~ Roslyne Buchanan

Aspragus Pesto 1 bunch of asparagus 1 handful of Parmigiano-Reggiano, grated 1/2 tsp. sea salt 2 cloves of local garlic 1 handful of fresh basil Crack of pepper 1/2 cup Franci bio, extra virgin olive oil (or any other good quality extra virgin olive oil). Simple and delicious, this asparagus pesto suits any occasion and it will find its way into many preparations! Remove the tips from the asparagus,

and set aside for use in your creation. Save the bottom part of the stems (a bit tougher) for soups or similar preparation. In a food processor, add all ingredients except for olive oil. Buzz lightly then slowly drizzle the olive oil in. If the pesto seems too thick, add a splash of water to it. If it’s not coming together, a bit more olive oil will help your machine along. Pesto is one of these preparations that is really useful in the kitchen because it’s so versatile so master your pestos and become a better chef! And remember that when you are cooking with so few ingredients, quality is a must. Time to go, Buon Appetitio!

PICNICS IN THE SUN ARE A FAMILY TRADITION AT ADEGA ON 45TH

T

he pergola at Adega on 45th is now complete and the patio is ready for summer picnics. There will be “family picnics a-plenty” according to Adega coowner Maria Nunes who grew up on this Osoyoos property along with her brother and co-owner Fred Farinha. Family has always been important at Adega beginning with Maria and Fred’s parents. Their father Manuel Farinha and mother Felicidade purchased the property in 1966. They grew tree fruits and Maria remembers the hard work that being an orchardist requires including the manual irrigation system. “We really had to work to move the water,” says Maria. Maria married Alex Nunes in 1974 and moved to his property south of Osoyoos. Fred and Pam married in 1987 and took over the family business soon after in 1990. After years of fruit growing, it wasn’t long before Alex and Fred began to look into changing their crops over to grapes and making their own wine. In the fall of 2008 the fruit trees were removed and the vines destined to produce grapes for Adega’s wines were planted the following spring. Uniquely situated for quality grape growing, the 20-acre property

BAKED MUSSELS WITH A MAPLE, MUSTARD, AND MISO CRUST Bill Jones, Author, The Deerholme Foraging Book Chef, author, forager, farmer - Bill Jones is the Island’s go-to guy for everything delicious. Living on his own slice of paradise on his Deerholme Farm in Cowichan Bay on Vancouver Island with his wife and sidekick Oliver, Bill has published numerous cookbooks over the past few years and we recommend buying all of them. This recent book is extraordinary, creative and delicious. Foraging in his rain forest backyard, Bill whips up dishes usually his trademark wild mushrooms but also uses lesser known foraging delights such as Grand Fir needles. Best of all, Jones invites all to come visit his farm and experience the magic of foraging through his series of farm to table classes. For class information go to: http://www.deerholme.com Do not remove the mussel beards until just before cooking. Removing this thread will speed the decay of the mussels. The mussels can be steamed in advance and the dish assembled and chilled. To serve, warm the mussels under a broiler to brown the crust. Serves 4–6 2 lb (about 1 kg) mussels 1/4 cup (60 mL) white wine 1 Tbsp (15 mL) grainy mustard 1 Tbsp (15 mL) maple syrup

www.winetrails.ca

1 Tbsp (15 mL) miso 1 Tbsp (15 mL) mayonnaise 1/4 cup (60 mL) panko crumbs Place the mussels in a large bowl and rinse quickly with cold water. Pull off any threads attached to the side of the shell (the beard). Drain and set aside. Place a large pot over medium-high heat. Add the wine and bring to a boil. Add the mussels and cover the pot with a lid; cook for 5 minutes, shaking the pot occasionally. When the mussels have just opened and are still plump, remove from pot and set aside. Reduce the juice over high heat until about 2 tablespoons (30 mL) of rich liquid is left (about 5 minutes). Preheat oven to broil. In a small bowl, combine the mussel juice, mustard, maple syrup, miso, and mayonnaise to create a paste. Peel back the shell of a mussel (discard the top) and spread a little of the paste on top of the flesh. Sprinkle with breadcrumbs and place on a baking tray. Repeat with the remaining mussels. Place under the broiler until golden. Serve warm.

Note: We use foraged mussels, but you can use farmed with good results. I would recommend a Pinot Gris or a rosé for this dish - Bill

ICEWINE CRÈME BRÛLÉE Basket Case Picnics, Serves 6 This version of crème brûlée is not made with eggs – instead uses the acidity of Icewine, a very sweet dessert wine, to set the cream. Because it is not baked, it can be beautifully presented in wine glasses. Ingredients Custard: 2 ½ cups whipping cream ¾ cup sugar ½ cup Icewine or other sweet dessert wine 2 tablespoons lemon juice Oat Brûlée ¼ cup maple syrup plus additional to drizzle over garnish if desired 3 tablespoons regular rolled oats (not instant) 1 ½ cups mixed fresh berries, such as raspberries, blueberries, strawberries, blackberries

Directions Custard: Heat the cream and sugar over medium heat and whisk occasionally, heating just until the sugar has fully dissolved. Remove the pot from the heat and stir in the Icewine and lemon juice. Allow the mixture to cool for 15 minutes then carefully pour into serving dishes (you can use wine glasses, champagne flutes, or other desired attractive glassware, since you will not be using a torch to “brûlée” this dessert). Chill overnight to set (these custards need at least 8 hours to set). Oat Brûlée & Assembly For the oat brûlée, preheat the oven to 375º F. Line a pie plate with foil and spray with food release spray. Stir the maple syrup and oats until the oats are fully coated and then pour this into the prepared pie plate, swirling to make an even and thin layer. Bake this for 15 to 20 minutes, until bubbling and

a darker brown at the edges. Cool completely to room temperature. To serve, gently sprinkle or arrange the fresh berries over the custards, then break off shards of the oat brûlée and arrange them alongside the berries, and drizzle with additional maple syrup if desired. Serve immediately. *The brûlées (ungarnished) will keep refrigerated for up to 3 days.

Lavender syrup is available from Forest Green Man Lavender www. forestgreenman.com or you can easily make your own: *Lavender Simple Syrup:

Use 1 cup of water per two cups of sugar 3 Tbsp of dried culinary lavender flowers Bring water to a boil. Add sugar and stir until dissolved. Reduce heat, so not to over boil, add lavender flowers and simmer for 18 - 20 minutes. Remove from stove and allow to cool down. world premiere 60 Years in the making will be performed in open air at beautiful Quails’ Gate Winery this August! This is a true-life, Canadian Opera written by Barbara Pentland in the 1950’s takes place on the grounds of Quails’ Gate – the former home of Susan Allison, the heroine of this opera. Co-producer and Canadian Soprano Heather Pawsey, couldn’t be more

thrilled to bring this extraordinary event to the Okanagan. This unique story between the Allison family who arrived here in the 1870’s (whose log home still stands at Quails’ Gate) and the Westbank First Nations is magical. Susan Allison’s story in the opera tells of her sighting of a sea creature N-haa-itk in Okanagan Lake and her experiences with the Sylix people. Heather Pawsey explains, “This production explores how they tried to learn from
