Int Kinda ironic how time flies, but at the same time stands still, all at once. Who would have believed that it’s already September 2020, and that we’ve been dealing with this damn virus for over six months now? Who would have believed that most, if not all of us, weren’t able to travel this summer? Who would have believed that schools have already started again, and that the poor kids are still doing online classes, and missing out on the best things about school, namely seeing their old friends, making new friends, and of course doing sports and other after-school activities? Who would have believed that every single one of us knows that many people who were badly affected by COVID-19, who either lost their jobs, or had their salaries slashed in half, or who know someone who got severely ill (or worse) from the virus, or who have been separated from their families due to all of the travel rules and regulations that vary from country to country and even from city to city sometimes? Yet here we are, still standing strong, making the best out of a crappy situation, ever hopeful that a global solution will be found sooner rather than later, and doing our best to spread some joy around K-town using bazaar magazine, the bazaar.town website and all of our other platforms to keep everyone engaged, entertained and up to date on what’s going on. One of the ways we stay strong is by focusing on the beautiful, the positive and the inspirational. Creatives are our secret weapon, because they allow us to look at the world and see it differently and to even question our own beliefs and biases. Local director, filmmaker, script writer and producer Abdullah Al Wazzan shows us how perseverance and tenacity can make dreams come true. Sheikha Alhabshi, illustrates (sorry not sorry) how art can be a vehicle for discourse and expression when the artist is passionate and authentic. If you are itching to leave the urban jungle behind and explore the desert, the Toyota Highlander is exactly what you need to move off the asphalt and onto the dunes. If you’re dreaming of something more extreme, then read how Red Bull athlete Ahmad Daham is partnering with Lexus to create a cutting-edge drifting car that will take him to the podium. We haven’t forgotten about our fashion-lovers this issue either. We interviewed Margherita Cardelli, and Gerardo Cavaliere of Giuliva Heritage and Maria Östblom Head of Design Womenswear at H&M about their upcoming collaboration that reimagines sustainable fashion (hint: it is not just about the materials used). COS chose to launch their Autumn Winter 2020 collection with a campaign that celebrates a very diverse cast of community creatives. All of this goodness needs to be fueled with great food, and what better way to do that than by trying Blaze Pizza’s new Cauliflower Crust with this month’s bazaar goes dining. We also tried smashing our own burgers with Shake Shack’s burger kits and lived to tell the tale, and we encourage you to try it for yourself too. This is our good vibes issue and it is a gift from us to you!

CHALET THIS WEEKEND?

Check out Fahad Al Musallam’s amazing summer beach packing guide By bazaar staff

We know that summer is not going anywhere anytime soon! This is why Kuwaiti athlete and motocross star Fahad Al Musallam is sharing with us his essential packing guide for any person heading to the beach, chalet, or pool. And while many fans are waiting for his next podium win, he’s helping us stay entertained and organized until then. An item of personal importance to Fahad is the camera, which he carries with him to capture those fleeting moments. “I’m a photography buff” Fahad said, “You never know when an opportunity might come up, and I generally just like to go around with my camera and see what I can find when I’m out.” And while the contrast between his adrenaline and endurance-based sport and a still image camera may seem odd, for him, the two balance each other out in meaningful ways. “Always pack a sun-related lotion. Sometimes you need to cover up and shield against harmful UV rays, and at other times you are looking to improve color and vitamin D consumption.” He said. “Vitamin D is essential to healthy body functions, and the scientific community is still learning about how a little sun each day is beneficial to us. For one, even the absorption of calcium is dependent upon Vitamin D levels.” 26

Fahad also stressed on the importance of other essentials to keep packed at the ready for would be weekenders. Such as, always keeping a pair of sunglasses handy, or a hat to protect during peak hours, and while swimming gear remains a musthave, an extra towel and set of clothes after the day ends should also be considered. A wet bag is one item that most people can forget in haste, but its value cannot be understated. “You think you might not need one because everything just goes into the wash, but a wet bag to hold all your used clothes and towels means you won’t ruin your electronics,” Fahad said. “Or anything else for that matter that you don’t want to get dirty.” Everything packed and ready to go? What about the tools you’ll need to create those unforgettable beach-side vibes? For Fahad, He said he likes to bring a bluetooth-capable speaker with him, so he can play his own music. He will take some time after being in the water to go through a magazine,

or simply take in the sun and clear his head after a quad session with friends. “You can’t always go at full speed.” He said. “You have to try to take in what’s around you.” We’re breaking down the beach-ready list so it’s always handy: • • • • • • • • • •

Swim gear Towel Aftersun clothes Sunglasses Footwear Bluetooth speaker Sunscreen or tanning lotion Reading material Wet Bag Camera

A PRESCRIPTION FOR LAUGHTER

…and now, for something completely different By Susannah-Joy Schuilenberg

“I contend that not only can you laugh at adversity, but it is essential to do so if you are to deal with setbacks without defeat. ~Allen Klein There’s nothing funnier than Monty Python. At least I think so, and I’m the one who’s writing, so we’ll go with that. Not only is the humor of John Cleese et al physical, it’s subtle, sly, and underhanded at the same time. If you haven’t watched any MP lately (or ever…???) then you might just want to do that. Laughter has the ability to break down barriers – language, culture, status – and level the metaphorical playing field, releasing tensions, creating endorphins, and releasing everyone present to be authentically themselves. How else could you be experiencing unexpected and uncontrollable laughter? We all look weird when laughing helplessly. Adversity is heavy. It’s a weight that feels more and more difficult to carry the longer it goes on. When you add a huge dose of uncertainty like we’re experiencing on a global scale, it’s almost staggering. People turn to all sorts of ways to find relief from the weight of that stress, and not all of them are beneficial. In the past six months there’s been an exponential rise globally in homicides, suicides, family violence, and civil unrest. While not all of it is due to living with the scary reality of a global pandemic, what is universally true is that the stress of how we are required to live in this extraordinary season adds fuel to an already smoldering fire. What we have is a constant cycle of bad news, worse news, and horrifying news. Cue anxiety and depression. Multitudinous people including me have written about self-care, being mindful of mental wellness practices, and having compassion for one’s self and others. This week it occurred to me that what’s missing is the escape and relief of laughter. A deep, helpless-to-stop belly laugh. It happened to me – the unexpected manifestation of the ridiculousness of being human with all that means – and the resulting stress-relieving laugh left me feeling slightly shaky and completely different emotionally. That got me thinking. Maybe what we need to add to our day/week/ life is the opportunity to laugh. I don’t know about you, but I love what is known as “gallows humor.” The willingness to poke fun at, be sarcastic about, or highlight the ridiculous parts of that which is in reality, not funny at all. Others love puns, or word plays, or slapstick, or sly, sneaky jabs. I’m not talking that which is demeaning, insulting,

28

or wounding to anyone – that’s just not funny. I’m talking about true humor…like the ‘He’s not dead,’ scene from Monty Python’s Life of Brian. Shriekingly funny…to me. Maybe you like the Three Stooges. Or Adam Sandler. Or stand-up comedians like Billy Crystal, Wanda Sykes, or Amy Schumer. Whatever/whoever makes you laugh, do some of that. Taking a break from the bad news, worse news, fake news, and Facebook will. not. hurt. you. In fact, it will do you a great deal of good. Particularly if you find a way to share the opportunity to laugh (safely, of course) with others. Ask around. Start a list (on Facebook of course) by seeking recommendations from friends. Find a curated list of the all-time funniest movies. I would not want to be the one to try and fix a list like this, but when I searched, I was reminded of movies I haven’t thought of in years. Like, how funny was Leslie Nielsen in Airplane? It’s so old…and so hilarious. From Tom Hanks in Big! to Matthew Broderick in Ferris Buehler’s Day Off (that Corvette scene!!!), to Jackass, The Movie, to a brilliant Paul Giamatti in Sideways, there’s no excuse for not finding something that makes you laugh.

Watch real stand-up on YouTube – Richard Pryor, Eddie Murphy, Kevin Hart, Chris Rock, early Aziz Ansari, classic Robin Williams, or my fave, Jerry Seinfeld. There’s something already in existence for just about every funny bone. Google it. I did, and I now have a list of things to watch, and I’m already anticipating the humor…I think I’m going to start with, A Fish Called Wanda. When will you find space to ‘lighten up?’ Will it make coronavirus disappear? Heck, no. Will it make lockdown vanish? Nope. But it will make you forget your troubles for a while, and that’s so much better than doing nothing. Research has shown that laughing two minutes a day is the same as a twenty-minute jog. So now I’m sitting in the park, laughing at all the joggers. ~Anonymous

IN CONVERSATION WITH ABDULLAH AL-WAZZAN KUWAITI FILMMAKER GIVES ARAB STORIES A VOICE

For local director, filmmaker, script writer and producer Abdullah AlWazzan, breaking barriers is simply not enough. The architect turned filmmaker aspires to dominate the industry, setting new standards for creative output not only in Kuwait, but also the entire region.

30

His work is gaining worldwide recognition with every passing day, with the heart-pulling animated short film Falafel Cart (2019) continuing to merit new interest. The film was submitted and qualified for the best animated short film category at the 2020 Academy Awards, won the best international short animated film at the Los Angeles Animation Festival 2019, nominated at the D.C. Independent Film Festival, and at the Palm Springs International Animation Festival, and officially selected at both the Sonoma International Film and Montreal International Animation Film Festivals. Most recently, Falafel Cart has been making waves at the prestigiously world-renowned Hiroshima International Animation Festival. Biennial in nature, creative submissions number in the thousands, and for a Kuwaiti submission to make it this far, we deeply believe that this is a feat worth celebrating. Abdullah also tells us that Falafel Cart will be showing in different parts of Asia and Europe in the upcoming period. This filmmaker however has his goals set pretty high, and laughingly tells us “I’m not satisfied.” He simply doesn’t want to be amongst a select roster of Middle Eastern talent making temporary waves abroad. Instead, he wants to constantly produce great work that garners a continuous record, contrasting creative output from the Middle East with that of the West, “We see American, European and Mexican filmmakers winning year after year, simply because their efforts are ongoing, they have more experience with the industry and they constantly create.”

Competing and creating work at this level takes a serious amount of commitment, and this is specifically what Abdullah set out to do when he established motion picture and animation company RoyalTales in 2016. But Abdullah’s passion for filmmaking goes way back in time. “I have been a filmmaker since I was 6-years-old,” he says, “I used to make so many home movies and I loved watching films. Back then, I knew I wanted to be a filmmaker when I grew up. And then boom. I had to go to architecture school because there’s no filmmaking school in Kuwait and I didn’t want to go abroad. So, I had to study architecture and then I made the switch again to the filmmaker [I am] now, seriously, this time.” He graduated in 2012, and he hasn’t looked back since. It takes a lot of raw talent to stand out from the crowd in any given field, but for Abdullah, the journey is also all about perseverance, a theme that is highly prominent in his work. With the conception of RoyalTales, Abdullah shines a light on stories from the Arab world that are rife with loss, and he takes an honest look on not only the physical turmoil of wars which plague the region, but also the emotional toll on people brought on by years of war and unrest. He shares with us how, “It’s frustrating to see the Arab world being constantly on fire. Whether it’s Syria, Palestine, Yemen, Iraq, and now Lebanon. Refugees get stuck in the middle of these wars, and if we can’t change or stop wars by ourselves, we can spread the message to stop them. In a way, we can steam off our frustrations.” Abdullah could have easily broached more accessible, or dare we say, happier, stories to share with his audiences, yet he chooses to look at the hard and ugly. He explains that “this varies for each filmmaker, and I understand life through film. Some people want to escape life, want to see a film to laugh. For me, filmmaking is an outlet to express. You can’t escape life all the time. I make films to understand life and its challenges, to feel and to heal.” Brave, beautiful and soulful, Falafel Cart follows the footsteps of a refugee who has survived the losses of war to start a new life in greener pastures abroad, and what is most telling is how the film cleverly asks the viewer to question whether life away from war, and essentially one’s home, is better or worse. We seldom survive life changing events without a loss of sorts, and while we’re used to seeing the physical destruction of war on news and social media outlets, we don’t often discuss the following emotional aftershock. We see death tolls, but we don’t think of what these numbers mean to those who survived. Abdullah spent years on this project, animating and designing Falafel Cart from start to end. Abdullah’s upcoming short live-action film Soaring over Mayhem builds on the theme of war, as it follows the lives of two brothers who struggle to survive as they grow up in war-torn Syria. He counts himself quite lucky, as this drama thriller is one of five short films to receive its annual grant from the Doha Film Institute at a time when uncertainty brought on by the current pandemic simply adds to an already shrinking pool of resources for filmmakers. And while he is fully set on fully supporting himself and self-funding his filmmaking journey, he is disheartened by the fact that Kuwait doesn’t offer more support for feature films and hopes to see this change. He says, “We definitely have an amazing audience and lots of raw talent too, but I feel that this talent dissipates when the creative infrastructure to nurture it is lacking. When you consider this on top of the economic recession pre-COVID, it’s going to be a tough road ahead for filmmakers in particular.” He repeatedly shares with us how he is determined to make it on his own, and he works with a wide international network of professionals who possess the tools, resources and knowledge to get the job done right, and to deliver the vision he has in mind for his work. He is currently concentrating his creative efforts on one short animation, and two feature films. Considered as a personal life-long dream feature film, Abdullah won’t reveal much to us about this project, but he does tell us that it’s been nine years in development, with thousands of sketches that he created and printed materials to make this dream come to life. We can’t wait to see what he does next! [Continued...]

UP CLOSE & PERSONAL QUESTIONNAIRE What do you most value about your friends? That I see them show up in the best of times and the worst. Which living person do you most admire? Several people actually tie for this but if I have to narrow it down then it would be Steven Spielberg and Alejandro Iñárritu. What is your idea of perfect happiness? To reach my potential as a human being. To affect people’s lives positively. To be with my family. What is your greatest extravagance? I am guilty of collecting rare 80’s and 90’s film memorabilia. What is your most treasured possession? Many things bring me joy but I am never attached to materialistic things. So none. What is your greatest fear? To not carry out the things I said I would do. What is your most marked characteristic? Obsession over details. Which talent would you most like to have? To be calm all the time even when things are going wrong. What is one trait you have that you are most grateful for? My visual storytelling ability which comes intuitively to me. What is the human trait you most dislike about others? If you look for the bad in others you will find it and some more, so I don’t like to focus on people’s faults and I just focus on my objectives. What is it that you most dislike? Wars. Man’s greed. Corruption. Which words or phrases do you most overuse? I will. What are your favorite words to live by? That life can’t be controlled so I should just do my best and enjoy it. Where would you most like to live? California, USA If you could have any job, what would it be? What I am doing right now writing, directing but with bigger budgets to tell my stories in a bigger scope. What would you consider your greatest achievement? Falafel Cart is considered my greatest achievement so far given that it spanned 3 years. With thousands of hours put in and single-handedly animated and designed by me. So I am glad I didn’t stop. But this will change as I move to the next project and the next. What do you hope for the future? To have a big impact on the world. To live a good life with my family.

You can watch Falafel Cart on Vimeo on Demand and Amazon Prime. For more information on RoyalTales, please visit www.RoyalTales.com. To keep up with Abdullah’s latest, follow him on Instagram @AbdullahsAlWazzan. 32

TALKS WITH FAIMUSIC Her latest new single, and insight on the music scene in Kuwait By bazaar staff

Constantly on the go, Fai has been fortunate enough to spend every couple of years moving around. Originally from Chitral, Pakistan her feet landed in the suburbs of Virginia where she first started dabbling in music. More specifically, it was her ultimate goal to pursue Broadway and perform in theaters. Luckily, we had the chance to meet the incredibly talented artist and find out what exactly brought her to Kuwait. All plans of a Broadway dream were followed until one day Fai was met with an unexpected change. Her family was asked to relocate back to her homeland. And so, although Fai strongly identified with Virginia being her hometown, she had to move back with her family the night before high school started. Although a halt in her career, Fai shared with bazaar that her move was a “blessing in disguise”. Starting high school in Pakistan was not an easy ride for her, she was singled out and felt like she had to find somewhere to fit in but couldn’t. What upset her the most was leaving behind her participation in theatre and choir. One day she pleasantly ran into two students who made her feel very welcomed. The students were playing Use Somebody by Kings of Leon and it motivated her to continue her pursuit of music. Fai gravitated towards playing on the guitar and felt like it came naturally to her. Ever since, she has practiced many more instruments. Although negativity and judgment were surrounding her at the time, which caused a struggle with anxiety it motivated her to keep pushing forward. 34

She kept moving in ways that made her feel at home, since home was a concept she hadn’t still defined. This led her to her first performance on stage with 500 attendees where she performed Hotel California. Fai talked to bazaar about her first performance and said that it wasn’t what she had expected and it actually felt like a defeat to her at the time. Fast forward, it was time to move again. This time she was relocating to Kuwait with her family. During her senior year she became obsessed with rock music and purchased her very first guitar. Fai prides herself on being self-taught and thanks her parents for their continuous support. From then on, she became obsessed with the guitar, she breathed, ate and repeated the cycle of practicing till 4AM while making sure her grades didn’t slip. She even gained a lot of attention from an Instagram guitar page that she started. As college talk was approaching, Fai realized that all her reasoning behind going away for college was to be able to perform and not so much the academia. Becoming one of the only guitar female players in Kuwait in a male dominated rock genre, she knew she had found her calling and it was music. Upon this realization, Fai left the band she was performing with at the time and starting writing her own music. Only two short months after that, she was signed by a label. Although the experience wasn’t as expected. Fai looks back fondly on the experience as a learning curve that enabled her to spread her wings even further. Fai also shared with bazaar that being in Kuwait was perfect for her because it allowed her to connect with musicians and producers locally, and internationally. Kuwait is a secret hub that people aren’t utilizing as much and she is so excited to be a part of it. Spending a lot of time with her craft, her guitar, Fai told us about her creative process “I see pictures in my head when I sit down to write, when I find a chord progression I just go with it” and as for her song writing she explained “ I practice what I call chicken writing until I come up with a melody.” We must say that the process inspired us to do some chicken writing of our own and get our feelings out on paper. Fai even described seeing auras when writing music, which helps her become more vulnerable. Contrary to belief, she says “I don’t always write about things that have happened in my life, sometimes it’s a feeling I want to feel.” Manifestation at its finest! When asked about her inspirations, they span anywhere from the works of Joni Mitchell and Fleetwood Mac to Led Zeppelin and Bon Iver. While her timeless, airy pop hooks resemble the likes of Kacey Musgraves and 36

early Taylor Swift, with darker elements similar to that of Lana Del Rey and Lorde, Fai does not like to put herself in a bubble when it comes to a genre. She often writes what she feels is right at the time, and whatever genre that ends up being is usually where the song is set. Fai is very big on music’s healing and therapeutic properties. She shared with us that she encourages people to talk about their traumas, write about the things that scare you. If you don’t talk about it, “it will consume you like a virus” A nomad in nature, Fai has always been able to bounce back after change. It seemed like many artists’ careers were put to the test recently however, it was quite the opposite for Fai, as this period allowed he to focus on her music fully and release her latest single. Her latest debut, her single Comet which

dropped at the end of last month is a great love song written from a male’s perspective through the eyes of someone loving you. It’s one of her favorite songs as of yet and she has dedicated it to everybody feeling unloved and lonely. Produced by Jacob Moumjian and featuring melodic guitar by Omar Salem, it depicts a budding romance in all its glory, that comes to life to a dreamy, pop ballad soundscape. Fai emphasized how talented Jacob is and how much he pays attention to detail. If you have not heard the song yet, we definitely suggest you do! Her advice for her fellow artists and people who want to follow in her footsteps is to “never tie yourself to one genre, be comfortable in your own skin, always look beyond your music and know your rights as a musician.” To keep up with the works of Fai, follow her on Instagram @faimusic.

SHEIKHA AL HABSHI ART THAT SPEAKS FOR ITSELF By bazaar staff

While Sheikha Al Habshi is still quite young, she is an already prolific artist and illustrator. She started with a fashion collection and stumbled onto illustration in 2018 and hasn’t looked back since. The outspoken feminist’s unmistakeable style is bold, colorful and very relatable.

38

For her, art is a source of comfort and connection. She graduated this year after studying Interior Architecture because she wanted a creatively fulfilling degree. And while she still loves it, she wonders if she should have considered Visual Communications instead. Yet, Sheikha uses her medium and message to communicate the things she feels strongly about. Her illustrations might look happy and bright but there are always powerful underlying themes behind them. “Well I guess in a way it was just filling a space that I felt didn't exist previously, I felt like the Arab girl experience was hidden out of mainstream media and a huge part of that experience centers around identity. I started out on this journey slowly discussing issues that affected me personally such as talking about the way I felt about my body and my relationships. This opened up a forum for other people to talk about their issues too.” Sheikha told us. Her unique style is instantly recognizable, and she believes that it was just a natural progression of her work. She keeps a log of color palettes and combinations that work well together that she sees in her everyday life and the environment around her. She believes that constant practice and a genuine desire to constantly do better pushes her art to evolve and improve.

As horrible as the pandemic has been, it gave her the break she really needed to level up her art work and finally launch her online shop, YouTube channel and newsletter. “There were a few prominent changes with my work, firstly with technique. I think due to the lack of time I had with university, I never gave myself the chance to really dedicate to art but this extra time at home has allowed me to really focus on different illustration techniques and raising the quality of work. Secondly, I've been given the chance to really discover what I want my key messages to be throughout the work that I post online which is surrounding feminism, self care and inclusivity,” Sheikha recounts her lock down experience. Leveling up allowed her to open an art shop, which stocks stickers and print t-shirts to other various digital products that feature her designs. Quarantine was a blessing in-disguise for her, because she used the time working and improving her skills to a point where she felt ready to share it with the world as marketable products. She is quite picky about the things she adds there, “Well, since my art centers around feminism, mental health and well me, I try to create art around those topics and to constantly bring it back to that sense of comfort and security that I

want to create through my art,” she explains. She already has plans to add more handmade products, like clay pins in her next shop update in October. And if you are a stationery and tote bag collector you are in luck because she will be launching tote bags, postcards and much more stationery products. Sheikha is trying to start a conversation using her art, and her newsletter started off with her wanting to create a more personal connection with the people that have been following her artwork on instagram. It is about community, “I follow a lot of creatives and getting to know them as creatives on a more personal level allows me to appreciate their work even more.” The last few months offered Sheikha a completely new opportunity, a physical exhibition. Until then, her work was mostly online and she felt liberated to be able to be seen through her art. “It was also very affirming to my abilities as an artist, a lot of the time it's hard to call yourself an artist when you're not actively showing your work in physical spaces, so being able to do that and being funded by an organization really helped me develop my skills further. I learnt to take chances and trust your art; that the answer will always be “no” if you never take the opportunities that you want!” says Sheikha, describing her experience. [Continued...]

39

She doesn’t have a five-year plan but she does know that she wants to grow her shop and to work with more clients who align with her values and beliefs. To aspiring artists she says “Never give up even if you feel like your work sucks, I know that sounds so cliche but it's true. There's a reason that you're drawn into the arts, TRUST THAT! I think as women we’re constantly made to doubt ourselves and our views, but just trust yourself and your artistic taste and your skills will follow!” TRUTH OR DARE How would your mother describe you in one word? Helpful. How would you describe your mother in one word? Kind. What is the most ridiculous question you’ve ever been asked? I've been asked before where I got my art from whilst they saw me working on it What is the most spontaneous thing you’ve ever done? I'm a very organized person so i don't usually ever do anything spontaneously (that makes me sound kind of tragic) What is your theme song? “Young hearts run free” by Candi Straton. What word in the English or Arabic language do you wish you had invented? Nova Scotia, it's a province in Canada but I love the way it sounds Where would you like to live? Paris, as cheesy as that is. What is your dream retirement location? Anywhere in the countryside. What is the first famous quote that comes to your mind? When I dare to be powerful, to use my strength in the service of my vision, then it becomes less and less important whether I am afraid - Audre Lorde. Which animal best describes your perfect partner, be it in business, or in life? A butterfly. Do you miss anything from your childhood and if so, what is it? We used to go to the chalet every weekend with my whole family when I was younger, that sense of closeness is what I miss 40

[...Continued]

If you could change your name, what would you change it? I’d never want to change my name. How would you describe your handshake, in one word? Not as firm as it should be. What is the toughest part of your character? The toughest part of my character would be my unwillingness to give up on something I genuinely believe in. Who is your favorite historical figure? Maya Angelou. What in the world do you least desire? Doing any form of math.

What do you think is lacking in the world, which [if there were more of it] would make the world a better place? Our lack of empathy and understanding to what other people are going through. Why do you think most people who do, like you? I think my constant need to be open and transparent about who I am and what I'm thinking. Finish this sentence: “Happiness is...”a clear blue sky.

NO POOL PARTIES

bazaar tries open water swimming By bazaar staff

The closure of gyms and swimming pools during lockdown proved difficult for a number of us. The gym bodies who live for exercise and are constantly on the move found themselves in lockdown doing high reps using their pets, 15-gallon water bottles or children as free weights, they were okay. But others who find it mentally exhausting trying to find the motivation to exercise tough at the best of times, slid back into a more sedentary Netflix and - for us singletons - no chill lifestyle. When all other exercise motivation fails the one thing I can do is get in the water, so when the curfew opened up this was my chance to get into the sea. The trick would be in the timing. Jet skis often come into shore to buzz swimmers in the shallow waters, so you need to make certain to not swim so late that they can’t be avoided. The rocky outcrop that sits behind the burger restaurant that I swim out from needs to be covered by the water level so I can swim from one outcrop to the other like an elongated pool length. By the second high tide of the day, the sun is way too hot so closer to the first high tide, and when there’s a little day light is better. Avoiding people is a skill on the beach, so clambering across the rocks and out from there as a jumping-off point would be my tip. Use slipon water shoes so you can walk straight to the water’s edge and just jump in. As the tide goes out, slippery rocks pose a danger so keep your center of gravity low, as these rocks will grate you like a carrot if you go down. You don’t want to get any scrapes before you swim as the sea’s salt levels are so high. The first length has me heading swimming north. I breathe to the right so only the eastern horizon greets my gaze. This means no landmarks to measure how far I’ve swum but I use the time to judge whoever it was that left their water bottle with cigarette butts in it on the beach because I’m swimming through this debris now. I spy something floating under the water to my left as I’m swimming. Is it a jellyfish? I keep seeing these trails to the left, am I swimming through a smack of jellyfish? This is why I swim in thick leggings, to avoid stings, bites and brushes against various creatures I can’t see. Pro-tip, use clear goggles, mine are tinted allowing my imagination to run wild at what could be hidden from me in the depths. I’m not feeling any stings so gather my bravery to glance to my left on the next stroke. The “jellyfish” turn out to be air bubbles that my curved left hand is trapping when going through the water. Adjusting my technique so as to not frighten myself unnecessarily once more, 42

I continue. I’ve only screamed out loud once and whimpered twice while swimming in open water. And that scream was when I stroked the back of something very long and very slimy that took its own sweet time to swim by me. So, the drama was justified I feel. This morning the sunrise luckily happens just as I’m wondering how far I’ve got left to go to reach the other side. I stroke towards the incredibly beautiful almost 1990’s fluorescent orange and perfectly round sun, watching it get higher as I swim. I’m too soon across, the sun a welcome distraction. The way back is so much easier. I can measure how far I’ve gone by swimming past the buildings. First is the curved covered glass wall of the nautilus shaped judges’ club, then the high-rise set further back with features painted in blocks of navy and red, the chunky horizontal residential building which is nine floors high and nine units across; each structure tells me where I am on the

return length. The waves gently push me toward my goal as I approach in my eye-line a little blue property with antennae on the roof nearly as tall as the building itself from my perspective. This is the one that gets me every time. This devil signals the end of the second length. But this is where there is always a current, dragging me away from the rocky outcrop from where I started. Here it feels like I can swim forever and not move. And when I look down, if I really want to, I can probably place my feet on the sand and walk out of the water, but giving up isn’t the point. As the tide is going out at this time of the morning, if you get into trouble or tired, remember the shallow is always just right there. No need to panic. It's an exhilarating adventure! THE MOST ADVANCED DRIFT MACHINE ON THE PLANET Red Bull Athlete Ahmad Daham Teams Up with Lexus To Develop Drift Weapon By bazaar staff

The FIA Drift-spec machine is a 1,200hp RC F-based weapon, set to compete in drift championships around the world. Recently, drift star Ahmad Daham teamed up with Lexus once again, only this time to develop the most powerful, most advanced Lexus drift car on the planet. Luckily, we got a sneak peek on the details of this awesome collaboration. The thoughtful build of this car was set out to not only develop on the success of his previous RC F Drift effort, but also to showcase Lexus top-flight performance-craft to the global Drift community. This Red Bull athlete’s latest machine weighs in at only 1250kg, and is covered in a bespoke featherweight Carbon Kevlar body shell. Moreover, a purpose and a focus beyond just raw power and speed was emphasized on this build. Daham’s RC F Carbon Kevlar, which he hopes to be campaigning in drift championships around the world, involves an obsessive attention to detail in the chassis, powertrain, and presentation that elevates the craft of its execution to mirror Lexus levels of takumi (artisan) 44

car-building. The result being a unique, world-class drift car that, even in a region renowned for high-power ultimate-level builds, is truly exceptional. Daham chose the Lexus RC F as the platform for his latest project after building his first RC F drift car which thrilled the crowds on its debut at The Goodwood Festival of Speed in 2019. “I am honored to be partnering with a brand like Lexus. I am really thankful for the support the team have provided me as I built the new RC F Carbon Kevlar for the upcoming season. This car is so much fun to drive and I cannot wait to push it to its limit. We have learned a lot in 2019 as we kept a ‘Kaizen’ philosophy in our research and development. I look forward to

another successful season and am confident [that] with this partnership we will be able to achieve all our objectives,” said Ahmad. He went on to add: “Building a car like this took so much effort not only from me, but from the team and partners to help me achieve my goals with this machine. I would like to thank every single partner for their continuous support and labor done to complete this project” This second car has many refinements over the first RC F drift car, not least because Daham had more time to build it. The first car was conceived and built in a record 70 days and stands as testament to the builder’s capability and resourcefulness.

Two themes that are central to the latest RC F Carbon Kevlar drift car are more power and less weight. The weight loss over the standard RCF was achieved by thoroughly rethinking the stripped platform and then fabricating this race vehicle using materials focused on weight reduction. In addition, mass was also more optimally positioned in the chassis to support the car’s drift mission. The locally fabricated “Python Garage” includes super-light Carbon-Kevlar body panels helping the whole car shave more than 500kg of the showroom RC F as part of the mission to achieve a weight that is competitive amongst other drifters. The power part of the equation has been provided by inserting a heavily tuned – 1,200hp is four times the standard output – version of the tuner-favorite 2JZ straight-six single turbo motor in place of the standard car’s naturally aspirated V8. The iron-blocked 2JZ motor, which drives through a four-speed Samsonas sequential gearbox and twin-plate Competition Clutch, was chosen due to the wide variety of readily available tuning parts. [Continued...]

45

The 2JZ’s legendary robustness, compact size and familiar architecture have made it a proven source of motivation for high output drift efforts around the globe. Ahmad’s years of familiarity with this engine also helps make it easier to tune, modify and adjust quickly at drift events. Key tuning components include a Garrett GTX3584 turbocharger, GSC Power Division valve train and a triple-pump fuel system from Radium Engineering. A Titan Motorsport dry sump has been added to improve reliability and a Nitrous Express 200hp kit bolted on to help spool up the turbo and cool the intake charge. Since keeping a close eye on all these systems is critical to drift success, Daham has included his preferred equipment from New Zealand’s Link company – a Thunder ECU and MXS Strada dash. With the power and the weight where Daham wanted them, attention was turned to the chassis tuning to make the most of the changes. The most significant alterations include swapping the rear differential for a Winters unit – purely to enable swift trackside ratio changes. And the replacement of the brakes with Wilwood racing calipers, to reduce unsprung mass – which enables faster changes of direction. FIGs Engineering was tapped to make the angle kit, a drift car essential. Three-way BC racing coilovers used to allow adjustments to both rebound and compression damping and allow Daham to perfect his set up. The finishing touches are a set of Japan’s finest Rays Engineering 57CR wheels riding on R888R TOYO rubber. The car drift is a totally remarkable piece unlike anything that has been made. DR. WAEL ALRAISS

Taiba Hospital’s star surgeon to Kuwait’s professional athletes By bazaar staff

Surgeons have one of the notoriously more difficult jobs in medicine. The demanding job can be unpredictable and stressful. Constantly putting their patients first at the cost of their personal lives and being on-call means that they need to make sacrifices that many of us don’t even have to think about. Dr. Wael Alraiss is Kuwait’s leading consultant orthopedic surgeon and a master at helping injured athletes get back to their sport of choice. When you first enter the Orthopedic department in Taiba hospital, you are greeted with a wall lined with signed jerseys and other sport paraphernalia. Soccer, hockey and even motocross athletes have knocked on his door after serious injuries. And he is proud of the work that he has done. The shirts are not trophies, but they are a reminder of a long and successful, well-earned career. For some people medicine is a calling, that they gravitate towards. As a teenager fresh out of highschool, Dr. Wael wanted to study mechanical engineering. However, his father really wanted him to become a doctor and he had been accepted to Kuwait University’s College of Medicine. After graduating in 1997 he started his residency where he had to rotate among different departments. After having some hands-on experience in the orthopedic department, it clicked and he was sure that this was what he wanted to do. In the early 2000s, he went to McMaster’s University in Canada to work towards his Fellowship of the Royal Colleges of Surgeons in Canada and is also a fellow of the Sport and Arthroplasty Fellowship. But he has always been more than just a doctor, Dr. Wael had also joined the military as a surgeon and worked his way up until he became the Head of Sports and Arthroplasty Unit in Jaber Alahmad Armed Forces Hospital. He attributes his ability to stay calm under pressure and to work under immense stress to his time in the army. Even before the 2003 Iraq war, he was always on-call and had to spend weeks in the field whenever he was needed. He has since retired from the military and is only practicing medicine as a civilian now. The change of pace has been a blessing for him and has allowed him to focus on living more deliberately and mindfully. When we asked him if he was interested in learning something new, he said he would love to windsurf. He’s now exclusively working at Taiba Hospital, which he says is just like family. Everyone at Taiba is exceptionally qualified. He really appreciates that the environment is collaborative instead of competitive and that all the doctors will put the health and wellbeing of their patients first and make sure they receive the best care. Seeing a patient recover after an injury is why he wakes up in the morning every day. “I love seeing an older patient who can hardly walk from one room to another, being able to get up and move around after a joint replacement,” Dr. Wael said. Improving people’s quality of life is what he wants to do. 48

But he also loves working with professional athletes. He is a master at knee injuries, which seem to plague soccer players more than most because of the nature of their job. The sportsmen are under a lot of pressure to quickly recover and return to the field with as little as possible downtime. His slogan is “you break it, I fix it. The doctor is quite popular on social media too, he has more than 20k followers on Instagram and 12k on twitter, but he is quite cautious about using his platforms to spread medical information. He believes that health education should be taken very seriously and that the information that people consume should only come from trustworthy sources. When we asked Dr. Wael what his advice for us would be for healthy bones, he said that in addition to good nutrition we all need to partake in regular lowimpact activity and exercise to stay healthy. Good news for us, because anyone can manage a quick walk.

Follow Dr. Wael Alraiss on Instagram and twitter @waelalraiss. Taiba Hospital is located in Sabah Al Salem, off of route 30 on Road 3. Call them 24 hours at 180 80 88. For updates and information, visit their website at www.taibahospital.com, and follow them on Instagram @taibahospital. 49

RETURNING TO THE SALON CHAIR

An ode to the neighborhood salon By bazaar staff

When salons were ordered to close their doors in March you might have heard a collective gasp from women all over the country. Since then there have been memes, jokes and the overdone making fun of women for being desperate to get their highlights fixed. But I believe there is another side to this story.

When salons were ordered to close their doors in March you might have heard a collective gasp from women all over the country. Since then there have been memes, jokes and the overdone making fun of women for being desperate to get their highlights fixed. But I believe there is another side to this story. We’re used to infantilizing women and making fun of their interests, but beauty salons are the opposite of that. They are a unique space that offers women refuge and respite from the daily grind. Being women-only establishments, patrons let their hair down figuratively and literally, are allowed to be themselves and to aspire to being an even better version after a couple of hours. Despite shifts in some views and attitudes, there are still many women who are not afforded enough personal time and space. New moms might feel judged for leaving the baby to go to the gym or to meet friends or they might not have the support 50

system to be able to do that. Yet, escaping for an hour to get their hair done is socially acceptable and most salons are welcoming to children. Nail technicians and hair stylists are great listeners. They have had years of experience of being faux therapists. Most of them will let you talk about everything and they will just nod or ooh and ah until you have talked yourself out of whatever has been weighing on your mind. There’s also the issue of accessibility. There are a couple of salons in every neighborhood and prices vary widely, so there is almost always one that you can afford. In fact, many women have a couple of places they visit, the fancy place for special and technical things like balayage and haircuts and the hole-in-the-wall place that will give you a 2 KD blow out. Newcomers to Kuwait might be surprised by the ubiquitousness of salons, but this is quite similar with most Arab countries. The salon serves an important role in the community;

it is a place of age-old cultural beauty rituals and a sanctuary. Salons often get a bad rap too, because they are tied to women using makeup and hair dye to misrepresent themselves. We don’t accuse men of this when they go to the gym to change how they look. Our visual identities are not written in stone. People are allowed to explore different ways of appearing to the world and we don’t need to justify our choices. The fact that we still have to defend the only space that we can call our own as women is telling that we still need it. We refuse to apologize for wanting a mani/pedi or getting our eyebrows done. Despite what many men think, we are not doing it to look good for them, we go because at the salon, we can just be.

The older we get the more we realize that the one class we never had at school was probably the one we needed the most, Financial Literacy 101. Interest rates and returns on investments can be difficult to understand when all we really want is to be able to just spend money now or have some stashed for the future. The COVID-19 pandemic was an eye opener regarding cash flow, financial stability and security. If anything we now know that having access to an emergency fund is not only smart, but could also be a life-saver.

52

Historical growth of a sample portfolio of $10,000 investment.

*Past performance does not guarantee future returns.

The old fashioned way of just depositing money in the bank and pretending you don’t know it exists just doesn’t cut it anymore. Because of inflation, by not actively growing your savings you are really just losing money. If you are like us and financials aren’t your strong suit, trying to invest on your own is challenging. We have no idea what bonds, stocks and dividends mean or how to purchase them and even if we did, what to do next. NBK Capital, have come up with a new financial advisory and investment service called Smartwealth. It is an easy way to invest, save and plan for a better financial future. The service gives you access to international financial markets by providing you with a globally diversified investment portfolio with different asset classes based on your financial goals and aspirations. For us regular folks that just means that their team of experts tailor an investment plan suited to your financial goals. They ask you what your goals are, how much money you want to start with and they handle the rest. It is stress-free, simple and much less risky than other options, so you can just focus on the important things in life, like where to vacation with your new-found wealth. Because every person’s goals are unique and tend to shift with age and life circumstances, so should your investment plan and portfolio. SmartWealth takes all of that into account and the team there will check in with you to let you know how things are going and you can always update them with new directions if your needs have shifted. In your 20s and 30s you might be focused on travel, education and finding ways to advance in your career while later you might want to focus on growing your retirement fund. So it is only natural that your investment can mirror the stage you are in. You can manage and monitor your investments through the website or mobile application, and easily make deposits or redeem your earnings at any time and wherever you may be. SMALL TALK AND SIMPLE THINGS

Meryl Mathew’s new book about arranged marriage By bazaar staff

Arranged marriage vs love marriage can be a hot topic in the region. Freelance writer Meryl Mathew decided to tackle the topic in her upcoming book Small Talk and Simple Things. She defends the older custom with personal stories and anecdotes and attempts to show an alternative perspective. We interviewed her to learn more about it. Why did you decide to write a book and why this one in particular? I have always loved to tell stories and I find a lot of happiness in sharing someone else’s success and achievements with the world. This was one of the major reasons I started freelance writing and over time the art of creative writing became a passion that I held close to my heart. I realized that there are many movies and books that talk about love stories and relationships found through dating. However, the soulmates who find each other through arranged marriage often never narrate their story out loud for some reason. This was when I asked myself, why not? because in today’s world where communication has become quite easy at a click of a button, arranged marriage has also become quite relaxed between possible proposals, hence some of their love stories are truly beautiful and some of them that did not work out was still worth a story to tell because of the memories and lessons it held. The topic you chose can be controversial. Did the journey writing this book change your views in any way? When my journey through the arranged marriage process began, I wasn’t sure how I would marry someone that I met through an app. I was positive that I could never fall in love or even like someone this way and decide to be with that person for the rest of my life after a few casual meetings. The journey of writing this book began as my way to deal with this frustration of the unknown. But when I heard several other stories and experiences and saw how beautiful these arranged marriage love stories were my view turned 180 degrees. I realized that a soulmate who was perfect for you in every way could be found even when you let your family play the major role in finding them. Thus almost magically taking away the prejudice that my mind was caught in. What do you wish people would take away from this book? The prejudice that every arranged marriage is forced and backward and only love marriages are something special and unique. I hope the stories in the book turn out to be a fun and relatable read for 54

the readers because in the end it’s not about how you meet someone but who you meet that matters. What was the process of self-publishing like? What did you learn from it? And would you do it again? When I delved into the process of self-publication I realized that it was much more difficult than I thought it would be. Writing a book is much easier compared to getting into the nitty-gritty of formatting and marketing the book yourself. But I enjoyed every part of it as each of these parts finally made the book. In the end when I saw my first copy both as an EBook and Print I sighed and told myself yes, it was definitely worth it, and I would eagerly do it another time.

GIULIVA HERITAGE X H&M

A timeless collection with sustainability in focus

By bazaar staff

Luxury Italian brand Giuliva Heritage is renowned for their flawless tailoring. Their choice of fabrics, finishing and silhouettes means that all of the garments are built and designed to last generations. The family owned Giuliva Heritage take classic menswear and reimagines it for women. Margherita Cardelli and husband Gerardo Cavaliere, Giuliva Heritage’s founders, are passionate about long lasting fashion in great fabrics. Together with H&M, the couple created a modern take on Italian heritage with a collection made from materials from more sustainable sources and in line with both brands’ journey to circularity, recycled fabrics have been used throughout. 56

In the beginnings of Giuliva Heritage, Margherita often used to borrow from Gerardo’s wardrobe, regularly dressing in his clothes. In keeping with this ethos, Giuliva Heritage x H&M features traditional shirting, strong tailored blazers and contemporary trench coats in recycled wools, recycled polyester and organic cottons. Accompanied by flowing blouses, dresses and wearable coordinating separates, these looks offer a concise, classic wardrobe. Time-honored tones of beige, navy, dusky blue and burgundy feature alongside pinstripe and glen plaid, and added details include cowl-necklines, bishop sleeves and high waists. “It was wonderful to work with H&M on this collection. Together, we created easy transitional pieces with designs that stand the test of time. We were especially delighted to use recycled materials

with every look. We have always been passionate about authentic, meaningful fashion that lasts and this collection undoubtedly captures that.” says Gerardo Cavaliere and Margherita Cardelli Cavaliere. “We are thrilled to collaborate with fine tailoring experts Giuliva Heritage. Inspired by classic menswear designs, both our teams were excited to create accessible and timeless pieces for the modern woman. With H&M’s conscious fabrications and Giuliva Heritage’s enduring designs, we’ve created long lasting pieces that we hope our customers will pass down from generation to generation.” says Maria Östblom, Head of Design Womenswear at H&M. We asked Margherita Cardelli, Gerardo Cavaliere and Maria Östblom to tell us more about the process, collection and the collaboration:

Who is the Giuliva Heritage x H&M woman? Gerardo: absolutely the same woman that I design for Giuliva Heritage. Women that are fully in control of their character and personality. Women that feel at ease with their own vision and fully trust their choices. Women aware of their charm that don’t need to flaunt it; from my point of view, therefore they become naturally desirables. How did the collaboration come about? Maria: We are always looking for interesting and exciting collabs to surprise our customers. Giuliva Heritage got our attention with statement classics from Italian tailoring tradition in a really flattering fit, gaining power trough wearability and represent a well-balanced wardrobe that we love and will be kept forever. Why is timeless design so important to you? Where does your passion for clothes that stand the test of time come from? Gerardo and Margherita: When we decided to launch our brand Giuliva Heritage, that takes inspiration from Gerardo’s Neapolitan tailoring and made to measure business Sartoria Giuliva, our main mission was and always will be “to create lifelong garments that can be passed down to generations. Classic statement pieces that can stay in your wardrobe forever and that don’t exist only because of a 6 months trend. This is what tailoring is about and we always wanted, since the start, to achieve the goal of creating timeless pieces both in terms of design and craftmanship.

Margherita, what is it about menswear design that you find so captivating? How did this motivate you and Gerardo to create Giuliva Heritage? Margherita: I always loved wearing pieces of my father and my grandfather so when I met Gerardo and I had my first chance to walk into his closet I felt I found heaven. Menswear design suits my personality and make me feel at ease. We decided to launch the brand because of the made to measure business for men, Sartoria Giuliva, that Gerardo was running since 2012. The main inspiration is the men’s tailoring design, we didn’t need any motivation, we just knew it was it.

What was it like collaborating with H&M? Can you tell us more about the experience? Gerardo and Margherita: It has been super exciting and surprising. We think we both had a journey where we shared experiences, skills and insights, achieving a result that perfectly speak for both Giuliva Heritage and H&M. The fact that H&M asked us to collaborate on a tailoring collection, reinforced our purpose and we feel absolutely honored to have been chosen for this task. Maria: It`s been a pleasure to collaborate with Margherita, Gerardo & their team together with our design team. We share their passion for tailoring, fashion classics and long-lasting design. favorites that make life easier with fewer choices but still, beautiful and well designed - modern pieces you keep for a long time. Both brands contributed to the sustainability aspect, Giuliva Heritage with their long lasting timeless design and H&M with innovation and fabrics - we think this combination is something our customers will really appreciate. What are some of your favorite pieces from the collection? How would you style them? Gerardo and Margherita: The white double-breasted suit and the long coat. Once on, they immediately stand out and tell the story of Giuliva Heritage and our personal tailoring know how. We would style them with high neck knits and lots of vintage jewelry. Maria: So many beautiful, useful and flattering pieces to use and share with my 21 years old daughter. Hard to select but the off- white doublebreasted relax blazer & wide high-waist trousers together with the cool midnight blue sleeveless coat with belt it’s a must have for me. Could you tell us more about the sustainable sources used to create the collection? Maria: We used most recycled wool, polyester and organic cotton. We share Giuliva Heritages love for timeless design and tailoring and together with our long-term experience and progressive sustainable goals, this is in line what we want to achieve to create a sustainable fashion future. The collection will be sold with prices starting from KD 7.990 at H&M in Marina Mall, Salmiya High Street, Al Kout Mall, First Avenue - The Avenues, Grand Avenue - The Avenues, The Forum - The Avenues, and on kw.hm.com, from the 3rd of September. 58

ANGER AND FRUSTRATION CAN JUMP-START CREATIVITY

Use these 3 tricks to channel it productively By Nick Wolny

Are you angry? Are you frustrated? You’re not alone. In fact, chances are you’re in the majority at the moment. Springtime saw millions of workers terminated or furloughed as a cureless, rampant virus took hold. And now a surge of human rights injustices are compounding our anger and frustration, and virtual activism is one of our only safe outlets. (Did you belligerently unfriend half your Facebook connections from high school this last month? I did.) With no end in sight, there’s certainly a lot to be angry about. From a young age, we’re taught that anger is negative and an unproductive emotion that needs to be mitigated. Anger doesn’t seem to fit in with the “pleasure principle,” our human instinct to seek positive feelings and avoid pain. To say that suffering and frustration are heightened at the moment is putting it lightly. But we should avoid being angry about it . . . right? Maybe not. It all got me thinking about why anger seems to kick me into action. Yes, anger sucks. So why do I psych myself up during a workout with angry music and a self-directive to “get angry?” What is it about acting on anger that actually feels productive? A quick brain lesson on anger Researchers maintain there are two basic motivational forces that underlie human behavior: the impulse to approach something desired, and the impulse to withdraw or move away from something unpleasant. One would think anger would fall into the latter category and repel us, but recent science has actually overturned that view. In simple terms, if you’re angry about something, your brain is wired to make you want to move toward the emotion and fully engulf yourself in it. Anger and innovation If you’re extra angry lately, I have even more good news. A 2014 study featured in Creativity and Innovation Management found that positive emotions actually constrain creative performance, whereas negative emotions can foster creative performance. If you’re angry right now, the worst thing you can do is ignore it or try to suppress it. Instead, channel that anger into a productive and creative source. Better yet, use that productivity and creativity to address one of the problems our country is dealing with right now and invoke change. To quote Tom Peters, author of The Little Big Things, “All innovation comes from fury.” 60

How to channel your anger Now that we know anger can provide fuel for our creative fire, let’s channel its propensity toward something good rather than falling into another unproductive spiral. Here are a few tried-and-true ways to jump-start your next brainstorm when anger’s at the helm. Stream-of-consciousness writing If you haven’t done the “Keep the pen moving” exercise since elementary school, now might be a good time to revisit this best practice for overcoming writer’s block. A common obstacle to creative thinking is that we’re censoring our thoughts and ideas from the start; idea generation is best served as a sloppy, unruly mess. Open up a new doc, set a timer, start writing, and don’t stop. Sketchnoting Why limit your creative thinking to words? Sketchnoting refers to information processing that incorporates shapes, arrows, containers, or other visual

representations. Think whiteboard or tablet doodles. As explained in Dr. Betty Edwards’ seminal book Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain, verbal function and cognition reside mostly in the brain’s left hemisphere, whereas visual function is processed in the more dreamy right hemisphere. If you need to get your creative gears turning, sketchnoting possible solutions through conceptual shapes and structures may help unlock new and fresh ideas. Ultradian rhythm Similar to the circadian rhythm your body experiences each day, ultradian rhythm refers to the two-hour cycles of focus and rest our bodies repeat during both sleep and wakefulness. To use your time most constructively, look to concentrate in intervals of no more than 90 minutes, followed by a rest period of about 30 minutes. So go on, then, be angry! Then leverage your anger to feed your next creative pursuit. You might be surprised at what new ideas and epiphanies rise to the surface.

NEW PANAMERA ACHIEVES LAP RECORD ON THE NÜRBURGRING NORDSCHLEIFE Porsche proves the stellar performance of the new Panamera ahead of its world premiere

By bazaar staff

While the Panamera has always been renowned for combining comfort with sportiness, the latest edition is taking on an even sportier edge as proven by the automaker ahead of its world premiere. In a slightly camouflaged series production car, test driver Lars Kern completed a full lap of the legendary Nürburgring Nordschleife over a distance of 20.832 kilometers in an astounding 7:29.81 minutes, around 13 seconds faster than the predecessor model. In the official ranking of the race track organization, this time certified by a notary public now stands as a new record in the “executive cars” category. 62

“The enhancements made to the chassis and the powertrain of the new Panamera were always noticeable during this lap on what is recognized as the most demanding race track in the world,” says Kern. “In particularly challenging sections of the track, the new setup of the electromechanical roll stabilization system remains consistently effective and provides the Panamera with incredible stability in spite of the bumpy track surface. Furthermore, the car benefited from the improved lateral dynamics and the increased grip of the new Michelin sports tires. I achieved cornering speeds that I would not have believed possible with the Panamera.” Even greater enhancements to comfort and sportiness “The Panamera has always been both an exclusive touring saloon and a true sports car at the same time. In the new model, we have enhanced those characteristics even more,” says Thomas Friemuth, Vice President Product Line Panamera. “Alongside the increased engine power, improvements have been made in the areas of cornering stability, body control and steering precision. These enhancements benefit both everyday comfort and performance. The lap record is impressive proof of this.” At an outside temperature of 22 degrees Celsius and with a track temperature of 34 degrees Celsius, Lars Kern started the lap at 1:49 pm on 24 July 2020 and crossed the finish line 7:29.81 minutes later. The record-breaking Panamera was equipped with a racing seat and a safety cage as protection for the driver. The notary public also confirmed the series production status of the still camouflaged four-door saloon, coinciding with the celebration of its world premiere at the end of last month. The Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 sports tire developed especially for the new Panamera and used for the record lap is now optionally available for racing lovers wishing to equip their new Panamera purchase with the same sporty tire option. Around 13 seconds faster than the predecessor model The lap record underlines the comprehensive enhancement of the second generation Panamera. In 2016, Lars Kern already completed the circuit in the Eifel region in a time of 7:38.46 minutes, driving a Panamera Turbo with an output of 550 PS. The past record time was achieved over the then usual distance for lap record attempts of 20.6 kilometers. In accordance with the new statutes of the race track organization, the lap time was now measured over the complete Nordschleife distance of 20.832 km. For comparison: Lars Kern and the new Panamera already passed the 20.6 km mark after 7:25.04 minutes. The record-breaking car and driver combination was therefore around 13 seconds faster than four years ago.

SCREEN TIME

Kids are spending more hours on screens than ever. Should parents worry? By James M. Lang

Millions of working parents have spent months largely trapped in their homes with their children. Many are trying to get their jobs done remotely in the constant presence of their kids, and they are desperate for some peace and quiet. Many mothers and fathers have sought any available remedy that would enable them to do their jobs and fight cabin fever—including some who have given their children a free pass on video games, social media, and television. One survey of more than 3,000 parents found that screen time for their kids had increased by 500% during the pandemic. In case you missed it, when the World Health Organization released daily screen time guidelines for children in April 2019, it suggested tight limits. Kids were already spending far more time than recommended with screens before the pandemic and had been for years. As far back as the late 1990s, children between the ages of 3 and 5 years old were averaging two and a half hours per day with their screens. And, naturally, what screen time rules families had been enforcing have been on hold since at least midMarch 2020, when most U.S. communities entered an era of social distancing. Should parents worry if their children are spending more time than ever online to learn, play, and while away the hours until they can freely study and socialize again? The short answer is no—as long as they don’t allow pandemic screen time habits to morph into permanent screen time habits. The problem occurs when excessive attention to screens crowds out other learning behaviors. A child watching YouTube on her phone in the classroom or during study time is not developing her writing skills or mastering new vocabulary. Teachers should consider how to cultivate better attention to those behaviors, rather than trying to eliminate all distractions. Likewise, parents should not view screens as the enemy of their children, even if they do need to be wary of the impact of excessive screen time on eye health and how much sleep their kids get. The trouble with excessive screen time is that it eclipses healthy behaviors that all children need. When children gaze passively at screens, they aren’t exercising, playing with their friends or siblings, or snuggling with their parents during story time. What I believe parents need to worry about isn’t how much time kids are spending cradling their devices during our current crisis. It’s whether their children are forming habits that will continue after the pandemic’s over. Those habits could stop today’s youngest Americans from resuming healthier

64

and more creative behaviors such as reading or imaginative play. If kids can kick their pandemic screen patterns and return to the relatively healthier levels of screen time they had before, they will probably be just fine. The human brain is remarkably malleable. It has extraordinary potential to rewire itself in the face of accident or illness and adapt to new circumstances. This feature of the human brain, known as neuroplasticity, is one of the reasons that doctors and health organizations recommend limits to the screen time of young children. Experts, educators, and families alike don’t want their brains developing as organs primarily designed for television bingewatching and video game marathons. In the current moment, parents should be grateful for brain neuroplasticity and take heart from the fact that whatever changes might have occurred

over the past few months need not be permanent ones. The brain transforms in response to our circumstances and behaviors —and it changes again as those circumstances and behaviors evolve. A few months of excessive screen time won’t override an otherwise healthy childhood of moderate screen time and active play. The ways in which work and school are adapting to social distancing suggest that screens are not the enemy. Rather, they are enabling people around the world to work and learn and communicate with loved ones during this extraordinary time. The real enemies of healthy development in children are the same enemies adults face: a sedentary lifestyle, social isolation, and distractions from work and learning. Using screens too much can contribute to all of these problems—but they can also counter them.

IKEA CATALOG 2021 – A HANDBOOK FOR A FRESH START AT HOME More inspiration, tips and better prices By bazaar staff

We can’t believe that 2021 marks the 70th birthday of the IKEA catalog! The colorful book has been making its way into our homes for as long as we can remember and is always a joyous occasion. From watching our moms mark their favorite sofas and pots to deciding how to decorate our first apartment, IKEA’s catalog has always been there. To celebrate the occasion, the Swedish furniture giant is giving us a gift: a handbook for better everyday life at home. A handbook that feels like a friendly and optimistic problem solver full of smart tips, hands-on ideas and small affordable shifts, rooted in real life at home. It is a way of sharing knowledge, a point of view that a better home creates a better everyday life at home. The IKEA catalog has always been a source of inspiration and helpful ideas of how to create living and working spaces that can adapt to our needs and lifestyle. And this edition has all of that and more. The pros at IKEA have filled every page with tips and suggestions that can make a huge difference to everyday life. Small changes, huge payoff seems to have always been the underlying foundation of the IKEA philosophy. Most items are designed to be flexible enough to fit 66

a wide range of budgets, spaces and aesthetics. For example, sofas can be easily transformed by changing a slipcover and the BILLY bookcase can be used as a single unit or you can combine several units to create a unique design that works for you. Because IKEA operates all over the world, they are in a unique position to offer customers advice and insight that can help anyone make their home cozier, smarter, more sustainable and more beautiful. We’ve had a sneak peek at IKEA catalog 2021 and we can tell you that you are going to love what’s coming your way. This year, the catalog can help you take some important first steps towards the things that can really improve not just your life but also the world like better sleep (your health), sustainability (the environment) and smart organization (your lifestyle). Without skipping a beat, IKEA shows us that we can work on multiple

important areas in life at the same time, without sacrificing our values and needs or breaking the bank. You can do all of the above with style too. If successful pattern mixing has always eluded you, IKEA will guide you to combining, pairing, contrasting different textiles and prints to create the aesthetic you have always dreamed of. Rethinking design norms has always been IKEA’s strong suit, and this year they want you to move your sofa from the wall to maximize your home’s space. The areas you free up can now be used for a work-fromhome solution and an organization corner. It is these little ideas that we truly value because they help us shift our perspective and reimagine how our daily lives can be improved. We regularly head to the IKEA showroom to grab a shawarma and some cinnamon buns but we also like to grab the smaller items that are useful. Mounting

METOD kitchen cabinets and MISTERHULT lamp little hooks can help you organize your bags so you know what to grab on your way out on any given day. The catalog has great tips on how and where to use these really affordable items in ways to save you time and energy every day. IKEA understands that you change and your life changes and has always designed their furniture with that in mind. Make sure to look at their suggestions for creating office space at home, welcoming a tiny family member in an already busy space or helping growing siblings share a room so everyone is happy. The brand has always been committed to providing their customers great value for money and ensuring they keep their prices as low as possible. After Covid-19, this has become even more important, so IKEA is now offering Even Lower Prices on some of our favorite items. Or you can upgrade your bed to the BRIMNES bedframe with storage and a headboard is perfect for anyone who wants to make use of that space under the bed. THE WORKPLACE IS FRACTURED

This is how leaders need to bring people together By Katie Jacobs

For most businesses, the early stages of the coronavirus pandemic were a sprint. Digital transformation that would have taken years was completed in days, as vast swathes of the workforce began to work from home. Retailers and hospitality outlets switched to delivery-only models. In the U.K., HR professionals and business owners grappled with the complexities of the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme, enabling them to furlough staff rather than let them go, with the government paying 80% of the wage bill. In the U.S., Paycheck Protection Program loans meant to enable small businesses to keep workers on the payroll were challenging to navigate, if they were able to get the funds at all. Several months later, it has become painfully, exhaustingly clear that what we thought was a sprint is, in fact, a marathon. The additional adrenaline rush of new ways of working is wearing off. We are fatigued. We are fed up. And it is starting to show. Something that has raised its head in recent weeks through these conversations is what I think of as a ‘fracturing’ of the workforce. Many organizations are considering how and when they can bring people back together physically. But the more challenging issue—one that can’t be solved with one-way walking systems and Perspex screens—is bringing people back together psychologically. Organizations of all sizes and across all sectors and regions have such a disparity of employee experiences of the pandemic that creating a sense of ‘oneness’ is a formidable task. ‘That sense of ‘we’re all in this together’ has long gone,’ one chief people officer reflected recently. Another, rather gloomily, added: ‘The kindness has left the room.’ It’s being replaced with resentment (Why am I putting myself in danger every day while my colleagues sit at home on full 68

pay?) and anxiety (Am I going to lose my job?). Schisms are appearing. Of course, some existed already between frontline and support or managerial staff and between low-paid and highpaid workers—but this crisis made things more visible and more profound. It has become a matter of life and death. Low-income workers (often in frontline jobs) and those in precarious work are far more likely to die from the coronavirus. We are all in this together—but some more so than others. If you’re a white-collar worker, you can work from home. If you’re a blue-collar worker, you can’t. But beyond even that dichotomy, the average workforce will contain a vast spectrum of pandemic experiences. This uniqueness of experience challenges the concept of fairness. How can you be fair and consistent when the spectrum of needs varies so dramatically? Should you even try? Rather than rushing to prophesize about the future of work being entirely remote or pressuring people to return to work, business leaders instead need to recognize how individual our working experiences of the pandemic have been. And more than recognize, they need to care.

As human behavior is messy and unpredictable, there are no easy answers to solving this. Many organizations are considering extra recognition for frontline workers, whether that’s cash, time off, or other perks. But the intangible is important too. Transparency is critical, with regular communications offering as much clarity as possible on why decisions have been made. We need open and inclusive cultures, where honest conversations are welcomed. And we need to give people voice and choice. Autonomy in our ways of working is sorely lacking right now. Enforced home working, without the option to go into the office or a cafe; for a change of scene, is not the same as flexible working, as it lacks the element of choice. Moving forward, changes to ways of working should be consulted on and agreed upon. As businesses move into the rebuild and recovery phase, they are going to need the innovation, creativity, and productivity that comes from engaged, motivated, and connected teams. Fostering togetherness will not be easy. We should at least start by acknowledging the incongruity of experience within our workforces and building from a place of honesty and compassion.

Proving that large vehicles can also be ecofriendly, Mohamed Naser Al Sayer & Sons brings a new level of efficiency to Kuwait’s SUV market with the launch of Highlander; Toyota’s biggest HybridElectric Vehicle (HEV) to date. Available exclusively with an HEV powertrain, the Highlander takes its place at the pinnacle of Toyota’s electrified SUV lineup. ALSAYER held a digital premier, live streaming the event on Toyota Kuwait Youtube and Facebook accounts for valued partners of Toyota as well as distinguished members of the press and media. After setting a goal of developing a vehicle that would provide both unrivaled family security and heightened driving pleasure in every situation, Chief Engineer Yoshikazu Saeki turned his attention to establishing the highest standards for design and quality. Saeki commented, “With the Highlander, 72

we want users to feel the joy of driving, go on new journeys, and drive even further. Ultimately, we wish to enrich the lives of our customers by bringing them unforgettable driving experiences. For the development team and I, being able to contribute to the memories of our customers in this way is a huge honor.” “We are delighted to launch the latest addition to our HEV line-up in the Middle East. In line with our commitment to contributing positively to the earth and its societies, the all-new Highlander has been engineered to offer outstanding fuel efficiency while delivering first-class comfort and performance,” said Kei Fujita, Chief Representative of Middle East & Central Asia Representative Office, Toyota Motor Corporation. The all-new Highlander combines all the familiar Toyota SUV attributes of comfort, drivability, and

safety with low emissions, greater fuel efficiency, Intelligent All-Wheel Drive (AWD), space on demand, and an impressive 1,500 kg towing capacity. The 2020 Highlander’s sophisticated body is based on the brand-new Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA-K) vehicle platform. This robust foundation is complemented by a lightweight high rigidity bodyshell with a low center of gravity, which provides the SUV with exceptionally nimble handling and comfortable highway cruising characteristics. The all-new Highlander’s thrilling drive personality is brought to life by a new electrified hybrid system that combines two power sources. The vehicle’s 2.5-liter Atkinson-cycle petrol engine produces 183 hp and is paired with two electric motors that generate 191 hp. With a combined power of 240 hp, they are capable of delivering a maximum torque figure of 231 nm. The system is mated to a direct-shift Continuously

Variable Transmission (CVT), which contributes to a minimum fuel consumption value of 20.0 km/L in the model equipped with Intelligent AWD while delivering enhanced driving pleasure. Drivers can also select from Eco, Normal, and Sport driving modes to suit their driving styles. The all-new Highlander HEV can be driven entirely on electrical ‎power with zero-fuel consumption and tailpipe emissions, or by combining the power generated from the petrol ‎engine and two electric motors, depending on the vehicle’s speed and driver behavior. ‎Its hybrid-electric batteries are continuously charged by either the petrol engine or when decelerating and braking, eliminating the need to plug in a power cord. Furthermore, the HEV features a host of advanced technologies, yet drives like any conventional vehicle and ‎does not require special fuel. A sculpted shape with chiseled lines gives the 2020 Highlander a powerful personality, yet it exudes a modern, sophisticated attitude that makes it ideal for family-friendly adventures. The SUV’s wide, stable stance is expressed through a two-stage trapezoidal upper and lower grille, which is accented with chrome trim for a premium look. The solid, rear-sloping cabin structure and upward-flowing rear flare contribute to a dynamic feel. lamp toward the bumper corner. Meanwhile, the panoramic roof’s large glass opening enhances the sense of openness and comfort for all occupants. Moving inside, the 2020 Highlander offers a comfortable, premium quality environment with impressive flexibility. The seven-seat vehicle’s second row of seats has a sliding range of 180mm to ensure spacious third-row accommodation for two adults, together with easy access. The cabin provides plenty of storage compartments, as well as five USB charger terminals for the front and second-row seats. Embracing a design philosophy that has created more space, more utility, and is more friendly, the allnew Highlander ensures that drivers and passengers enjoy maximum comfort and convenience throughout their journey, wherever they may be traveling to. The car’s cabin includes a range of advanced features, including a dual-zone automatic air conditioning system with rear control panel and Smartflow (S-FLOW) control that provides air conditioning to occupied seats only. The cluster gauge features a 7-inch color multi-information display (MID), which

74

is complemented by an 8-inch display audio system, a large colored head-up display, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. bazaar weekends

LIVING THE LEGO LIFE

Spend the weekend building and taking apart all the things By bazaar staff

We don’t know about you, but we’re still spending most of the weekend at home. Between social distancing and the scorching heat, we’d rather chill in the AC. We’ve watched all the Netflix, organized all the closets and baked all the sourdough. What we needed was something interesting, engaging and fun for all ages. And it comes in the form of little nubby plastic bricks called LEGO. You’ve probably played with them and might even own some bricks yourself especially if you have kids at home. There are some amazing kits out there that will keep you entertained all day. The LEGO Architecture line is one of our favorites. Not only can you put together iconic buildings from all over the world, they make great decor pieces. Nothing screams cultured like contemporary architecture on bookshelves made of plastic bricks. For something more futuristic, you can purchase a robot building kit. We got the BOOST set, which is quite affordable. Constructing the robot took us hours, only to just start having real fun; a phone app lets you program it to do all sorts of fun things. We only built the robot, you can also turn it into a guitar and a little cute dog among other things.

78

Then there are different ways to enjoy LEGO without having to follow the instructions. If you love organizing things, you can start by sifting through your LEGO and splitting them by color or size or both. It is a therapeutic way to spend an evening and once you are done you will really appreciate the order. If you have a strong Minifig (the little men and women characters) collection going, you can build a Minifig display. There are lots of great ideas on Pinterest that can help inspire you. While you are on the site, check out LEGO hacks and ideas. There are so many out-of-the-box designs that you can build that are functional and will help add some pops of color in your life. We found so many wonderful ideas like an iPhone and Apple Watch docking and charging station that only needed a small amount of

basic blocks and is the perfect bedside table companion. You can find so many smart ideas from pen holders to picture frames. You can even level up into more complicated designs like puzzle boxes and drawers with complicated locking mechanisms. That is the beauty of LEGO, you can start with the simplest building block and go as far as your imagination will let you and only continue to grow. But beware, if you get hooked, this little hobby might take over all of your weekends going forward.

H&M X WHOOLI CHEN TAIWAN-BASED ILLUSTRATOR PRESENTS A WORLD OF WHIMSY FOR THIS SPECIAL KIDSWEAR CAPSULE COLLECTION By bazaar staff

Whooli Chen’s iconic illustrations feature brightly in H&M’s latest kidswear capsule collection for this autumn. Starring Whooli Chen’s amazing world of animals, florals and other nature scenarios. The dreamy colors and painterly layers are a result of pencil-drawn details and digital gradients, creating a beautifully surreal wildlife world presented on a range of children’s clothing and accessories. Whooli Chen’s fantastical and expressive illustrations feature on party dresses, cozy hoodies, a jumpsuit, joggers and leggings, plus a matching rabbitshaped bag, scrunchies, beanies and snoods, all in a variety of print techniques and effects. Pajamas, underwear and socks round out the collection. With a color palette of warm, soft neutrals and black as a contrast, plus greens, muted pink, turquoise, navy and pop color accents, the magic of nature and wildlife really comes to life. “I’m always inspired by botany and zoology, but literature is also a constant source of wonder. That sense of storytelling is what I try to bring out in all my illustrations so with the H&M collaboration, I focused on certain animals, flowers and scenes of nature during autumn to capture the minds and hearts of the children wearing the collection. I can’t wait to see and hear about their reactions,” says Whooli Chen. The entire collection is made from more sustainable materials, such as organic cotton, recycled polyester, Tencel, cotton sourced through

84

the Better Cotton Initiative and for the first time in kidswear, Texloop RCOT. A fabric with a high share of recycled cotton, Texloop processes high-value cotton waste to create new fabric, preserving the original fiber quality for the next generation of recycled materials. “Whooli Chen’s illustrations are so unique and beautiful, balancing softness and precision, and they look absolutely stunning on all the kidswear designs. We’re also happy to have more sustainable materials throughout this collaboration, including Texloop, a fantastic material that we’ve incorporated into some of the pieces. For example, the long-sleeve T-shirt is 50% Texloop RCOT recycled cotton, the highest combination of recycled and sustainably sourced cotton H&M has ever done,” says Sofia Löfstedt, Head of Kidswear Design at H&M. The Whooli Chen x H&M collection will be available starting September 17 online at kw.hm.com and across all H&M stores in Kuwait with prices starting from KD 3.990.

YOU’RE ORGANIZING YOUR FACE MASKS WRONG

Here are 6 ways to stop losing them By Arianne Cohen

Here’s some news you may not yet be ready to process: Masks are here to stay. Yep. For real. Which means you need to acknowledge this new reality, and address the mask chaos brewing at your home with an organization system, just like you do with your keys and phone and bags. Otherwise you’ll find yourself frantically unable to locate a clean mask when running out the door, or worse, unable to enter a store or meeting because your ‘mask’ pocket is maskless. Here are six ways to organize them—none of which involve baskets, bowls, or piles: The Lingerie Bag Method Hang hooks near your front door, such as a wall key sorter or Command hooks, or if you’re particularly lazy, two nails in the wall. Hang clean masks on the hooks, and put dirty masks in a lingerie bag hung on one hook, which you then toss directly into the

90

laundry. The genius of this plan is that masks are only two places in your home, either on a hook or all together in one bag in the laundry. Similarly, you can hang colored mesh produce bags from hooks near your front door, one color for clean masks and another color for dirty masks, or one color for each household member. The Caddy Method Put a caddy like this one near your front door. Each person gets their own mask cubby, plus a shared ‘dirty’ cubby (and, this being a pandemic, perhaps pockets for hand sanitizer and gloves?). Bring the whole caddy to the laundry. The N95 Method If you’re reusing N95s or similar, invest in a sleeklooking Coral UV 3-in-1 Sterilizer. Simply plug one in near your entry way, and drop masks into its cleaning cycle when you come home. The Octopus Method Finally, a raison d'être for the Ikea Octopus. If your masks must hang dry, take them right from the

washing machine onto the Octopus, and hang the Octopus near your entryway or in a coat closet. A tie hanger also works. The Bin Method Hang magnetic bins near the front door and one magnetic strip on the side of your washing machine. Put ‘clean’ and ‘dirty’ bins near the front door; you can simply take the dirty bin, attach it to the side of your washing machine while you do wash, and then sort the clean masks right back into the bin. The Car Plan If you need to have a stash in the car (you do!), first stick a few disposable masks in your glove compartment, just in case. Then buy car hooks that install below your headrest like these, or use Command hooks. One hook is for clean masks, and one hook is for a mesh bag to hold the dirty masks, which you can toss into the laundry, and bring right back out to the car.

You’re welcome. Stay safe out there.

PLANET POWER WITH MONKI DENIM Because sustainability looks good on you By bazaar staff

If 2020 has taught us anything, it’s to be kinder to our world and ourselves. With Monki’s new denim campaign, this statement rings true and reflects the brand’s commitment to its sustainability goals. Yes, we all love all things shiny and new, but that doesn’t mean that we can’t make better decisions when it comes to our purchasing choices.

Monki’s latest denim campaign is teeming with nostalgia; think VHS home videos capturing dreamy backyard summers and candid moments with friends. A soft narration describes the sustainable features of the jeans – features that not only make you look good but also feel good. Since 2016, the brand’s entire denim range has been made with 100% certified organic cotton. With additional sustainable features frequently added, including sustainable zippers, recycled thread, recycled zipper tape and post-consumer waste (PCW). The brand aims to increase the use of PCW in all products – while many of the denim styles already include a small percentage, they have released a few special items made up of 65% PCW and 35% recycled polyester (for durability). By using PCW instead of virgin cotton there are savings of up to 4500 liters of water, per 1kg of fabric. The new collection pedestals pastel lavender, worn black and classic blue washes. Key pieces include the high-waist and wide leg vintage fit. Subtle puff sleeve details enhance the retro styling. And the coordinated sets are featured in both shirt and jacket combos. STUDY AT HOME WITH MUJI

Get ready for school, 2020 home edition By bazaar staff

When schools were shut down in February no one could imagine what was to come, therefore academic institutions and students alike were equally unprepared. The changes were too quick for anyone to react to properly so everyone just hustled, wrapping up the academic year. Lucky for us MUJI has always been there for us when it comes to getting ready for back-to-school. We already know that for at least the first half of the year students will be relying on distance learning. Understandably there are numerous challenges which will need to be dealt with by the professionals but any student can do their part by preparing their space to be as conducive to learning as much as possible. Stationery You should already have your laptop, internet connection and software sorted out by now, but you’re not done yet. Just because everything will be delivered digitally, that doesn’t mean you don’t 96

need stationery. You still need to write out notes and outline on paper. According to a research study by Pam Mueller and Daniel Oppenheimer, “Students who took notes on laptops performed worse on conceptual questions than students who took notes longhand.” Writing down important points, ideas and outlines can really help you internalize new information that you learn. Keeping a journal or a written todo list can also help you stay organized. Classify contents and sort your notes easily with the Set of 5 Planting Tree Paper Notebooks. You can choose from a range of notebooks, sticky

notes, sharpeners, scissors, organizers, calculators, digital clocks, desk storage, pen cases, pouches, files & file boxes, lunch boxes and backpacks. MUJI stationery is designed based on the ideology that everyone can freely mold them into different solutions for their own unique requirements regardless of age, occupation or personal style. You are now ready to conquer academia! Storage A messy desk is not going to help you learn. Organizing your space will help declutter your thoughts. Making sure that everything has a special

place but is still easily accessible without having to get up and look for it, can be tricky. We love the acrylic storage solutions at MUJI because we can see where things are but they are still stored away when we don’t need them. Essential oils Focusing in a classroom can be a challenge, focusing while your bed is in your line of sight might be impossible. Ever since Marcel Proust wrote about the link between scents and memories, researchers have delved deeper into the topic. We now know that the Proust Effect is real and supported by scientific evidence. Not only can your nose be the way to remembering things, some specific scents can even help you concentrate better. You can find different diffusers at MUJI, but our favorite one for studying is the USB powered portable version. You don’t have to worry about filling it with water, or spilling near your laptop. There’s a wide range of essential oils that will help you focus deeper and better. Peppermint, sweet orange, spearmint, rosemary and lemon are among our favorites. And once you are done, you can chill to some lavender scent so you can relax and get your brain ready for a new day. Comfy clothing Now that your desk and ambience have been prepped, there is only one last thing left. Your outfit. Spending the whole day in your PJs is out of the question. You need to look smart to start acting smart, but without sacrificing comfort. We love MUJI’s fashion collections because they are always made of natural and breathable fibers like linen and cotton. The neutral colors and loose fits won’t distract you from calculus or creative writing. Just pop on a linen dress or wide legged pants, and a T-shirt, top off with fashionably framed blue light glasses and now you are Zoom class ready.

bazaar hit list

ONCE UPON A TIME

In a land far, far away down memory lane… By bazaar staff

Growing up with stories and fairytales is a memory no child could forget, until they learn that the fairytales they’ve grown up with are actually way more horrifying than they are. We’re either left shocked by the truth, or surprised at how we could have thought the tales were so different from when we first heard them as mere children. Remember how Cinderella’s stepsisters literally cut a couple of their toes so that their feet would fit the magical glass slipper? There were variations for each tale, and even though half of them were passed on to us in different forms, we couldn’t help but feel a bit more nostalgic than usual as we remembered them again for this month’s hit list! Name: Yasmine El Charif (Content Manager) Favorite fairytale: Thumbelina! Why? This goes back to a childhood obsession with Polly Pockets and all things small and cute. I just loved the idea of teeny tiny fairies and humans coexisting, and Thumbelina came as the perfect culmination of my favorite things. I honestly would rewatch that video tape (well, now YouTube Link) just for the music, Jacquemo the swallow, and seeing 98

how Thumbelina goes on her many adventures avoiding marriage proposals from toads, moles, and beetles only to find a happy ending with her fairy prince. Happy ending aside, it's really all about the adventure, sans the normative woman-getsrescued-by-prince part! Again, I would totally advise to watch it for the music, I can still recall it in my mind ever so vividly. Name: Yasmin Gamal (Mixed Media Content) Favorite fairytale: Rumpelstiltskin Why? It is an absolutely bonkers story. I thought the maiden was brave for finding a way to trick Rumpelstiltskin and keeping her firstborn. And then I grew up. She is a liar, Rumpelstiltskin is a liar and the whole economy is based on people tricking each other. As a child, I thought that fairy tales taught us important morals, as an adult I realized how twisted and dark most of them are. Name: Umika Pidaparthy (Online Producer) Favorite fairytale: The Brave Little Tailor Why? It's a very simple 19th-century German story by the Brothers Grimm about a tailor who goes from swatting flies to crushing giants with his claim "Seven at One Blow". But what I love about this clever story is that it is not the tailor who makes up tall stories about his heroics, but the people and magical beings who make the assumptions. The tailor uses a lot of misdirection to get his way, and the results are pretty funny, albeit a bit dark. This fairytale also was adapted into a classic 1938 Disney animated short with a much tamer story.

Name: Hallah Danbouh (Mixed Media Content) Favorite fairytale: One Thousand and One Nights (Alf Laylah wa-Laylah) Why? The daily night stories which are told by the young Shahrazad to escape her very own sentence of death from the merciless and vicious King Shahrayar was a favorite. Shahrazad’s quick wit is what I admired in her the most, plus, the way she told her stories to escape the fate that’s she’s been forced into was so inspiring and ultimately, an educational tale I never forgot. It taught me that even in a ridiculous patriarchal realm, women are never too weak to conquer their obstacles, and outwit any powerful man out there. Name: Farah Barakat (Mixed Media Content) Favorite fairytale: Jack and the Beanstalk Why? “Fee, fie, fo, fum, I smell the blood of an Englishman!” Pretty sure I loved this fairytale because I loved repeating that phrase. Apart from that, this fairytale taught me much more than happy endings. It taught me that with perseverance and wit, good things happen to good people. It also taught me to follow my intuition, regardless of what people around me may think, and what may seem like the “right thing to do” for them, may not always be the right thing to do. Most importantly, power is not in how scary you look or the things you possess, but instead in the way you use your greatest tool, your mind. SPEAK NEANDERTHAL

Inside Exploding Kittens’ new hit game that lets you bonk your partners on the head By Yasmin Gagne

Five months (years?) into quarantine, my boyfriend and I have developed a primitive mode of communication. Short phrases such as ‘lunch?’; ‘this clean?’; ‘Netflix? Babylon Berlin?’; and ‘need groceries’ have replaced the lively conversations we once had when we didn’t spend every single moment together. A new game, developed by the creators of the wildly popular Exploding Kittens, hopes to help us develop our monosyllabic vocabulary—and give us a way to blow off steam from our quarantine frustration. The premise behind Poetry for Neanderthals is simple: Contestants must describe something using only one-syllable sounds. If they make a mistake, another contestant can use an inflatable club to bonk them on the head. Exploding Kittens cofounder Elan Lee, who was 102

previously the chief design officer at Microsoft’s Xbox, says the idea was brought to him by some friends. ‘Some friends came to me and said, ‘What if you had to describe an experience, like falling in love or passing a driving test, with one-syllable words?’ It was really funny because immediately, your vocabulary goes down to almost zero and you sound like an idiot, but everyone listening to you is busting up laughing, trying to interpret what you’re describing,’ Lee says. From there, the team made the concepts to describe a little easier—writing them out as one word, like ‘broccoli’ on a deck of cards—so that people of all ages could play. Cofounder Matt Inman, who created and continues to run The Oatmeal, one of most popular webcomics in the world, in addition to working as Exploding Kittens’s cofounder, says, ‘As we started playing that version, we realized that we all sound like cavemen, and it’s kind of this weird, clunky version of poetry. So let’s call the game Poetry For Neanderthals, and that’s how it was born.’ He adds, ‘This is as if we gave you something like the New York Times but made you spell like a third grader.’

While Lee immediately saw that the game would be perfect for families to play as they are quarantined, getting it manufactured quickly was another matter. ‘We hit go on this game in February, and it came out in June—the production cycle was super fast,’ Lee says. ‘It was hard get the inflatable clubs manufactured, because inflatables are all made in China, which was dealing with the coronavirus so everything was shut down.’ Eventually, the team split their orders between multiple production plants, even teaching some plants how to make inflatables where they hadn’t before. Poetry For Neanderthals comes at a time when people may have exhausted the TV shows they want to stream, and when it can be difficult to concentrate on reading a book. ‘I think people are stuck at home with each other, driving each other bonkers,’ Inman says. ‘People are bored, and they’re lonely and they need something to do interact with their family other than watching TV. This game is good for that.’ Inman says that the game can even be played over Zoom. ‘We just bonk the camera with the inflatable club—everything else is talking so it’s fine.’

TAWLA BY JOOD

Be Suhair Al Jasim and Reem Al Mussalam’s guest By bazaar staff

Jood in Arabic can have many meanings. Generosity, goodness and finery are some ways to translate the word. Sisters-in-law Suhair Al Jasim and Reem Al Mussalam chose a specific meaning when they started Tawla By Jood. ‘Jood’ means generosity. There’s an old saying that goes “‫ ”الجود من الموجود‬which means ‫بما تجود به األرض من عطايا‬ ‫’الرحمن‬,” explained Suhair. It is always difficult to translate things like this because nuance and culture can be lost, but in essence it means that giving your all is the highest form of generosity and also that the land’s best produce is a gift from God. In the Arab world cooking and serving food is part of the culture of giving. Your guests deserve the best china, the finest ingredients and the shiny silverware that is often handed down from one generation to the next. It would be an insult to do anything less. Suhair and Reem embody this through their concept, Tawla by Jood. One part catering and one part community table, the startup is all about joining people through seasonal home cooked feasts. The women are self-taught and learned cooking by combing through videos on the internet that provided proper instructions. Suhair adds that her main motivator for elevating her cooking skills were her husband’s helpful and constructive criticism coupled with his good taste. The sisters (as they think of themselves) started Tawla by Jood because they wanted to relive the same experiences they had when they travelled without actually having to book tickets. It is almost as if they were prescient and knew that we would all be putting our globe-trotting plans on hold this year. “We wanted to make use of the short months where the weather is beautiful and cool and enjoy several different locations in the country. That’s why we always make sure to secure indoor and outdoor locations with beautiful scenery,” Suhair and Reem told bazaar. The changing seasons and in turn the different fruits and vegetables of the time are a vehicle for inspiration and ideas. “I get inspired by simply going grocery shopping in supermarkets or veggie and fruits markets. Seasonal crops usually inspire most of my recipes and push me to become inventive. Anything that is fresh, ripe, and seasonal is pretty much my inspiration to create great dishes,” Reem explains. This philosophy is clearly visible in their menu. Every single dish is a painting that uses different colors,

104

textures and flavors, balancing and playing with each other for a delicious dish. The bright and enticing colors aren’t an accident. Suhair explains that she is a “strong believer that the eyes are always attracted to what is beautiful. So, I always make sure that my ingredients are fresh and I make sure every placement is to enhance the look of my dishes and add to its appeal. That’s something I’ve learned through constant practice and listening to my intuition and how I feel. There are no repeated presentations, every plate comes out differently every time. Every plate has a piece of my soul in it and it guides my creative instincts to do better every time.” It is this kind of dedication and personal commitment that sets Tawla By Jood apart from everyone else. The women are first and foremost mothers who

are experienced in cooking for their families, but despite years of practice in their home kitchens. Tawla by Jood is a completely different ball game. The ladies agree that nerves and adrenaline are high and peaking during any Tawla event. They are constantly making sure that every dish is perfect from the moment they conceive it to the moment it is served on the table for their guests. “The whole process is a different kind of rush from putting the tickets on sale, to preparing the menu and beginning the cooking process...up until seeing our guests’ happy and satisfied reactions and hearing their praise and endless compliments, that is when our happiness comes full circle,” Suhair tells us. From the inception of the project, Suhair and Reem wanted to use seasonal products. “We rely heavily on fresh ingredients to ensure we deliver our flavours to

their maximum potential; so creating seasonal dishes is highly dependent on what’s currently fresh in the market. For example: basil leaves differ from season to season so we make sure to include them heavily when their time comes,” they both explain. When we asked Suhair and Reem what advice they would give for any aspiring cook or someone who is trying to host a large gathering they both agreed that breaking down the recipes into sections and preparing them a couple of days ahead of time is key, so everything runs smoothly on the day of the event. They both agreed that time management is one of the most important skills that they had to master to successfully host their events. Tawla by Jood is an ode to slow-living, respecting time and fully enjoying the present; whether it is by

focusing on fresh produce when it is in season or by using comforting home-cooking techniques that make us all feel like home. In today’s fast paced life, we appreciate the opportunity to be welcomed at a table where we are treated like family and offered food cooked with love.

Right now you can’t order a single menu item, but you can order a full Tawla buffet for 25-52 people by visiting their website tawlabyjood.com or contacting them on Instagram @tawlabyjood. We do recommend that you add their grilled asparagus salad with caramelized onions to your selection because everyone who has tried it fell in love with it.

On August 4th, a major blast struck our beloved Beirut causing thousands of injuries and over a hundred deaths. As citizens of the world, our hearts beat as one and everyone was affected by the news. To support the people and city of Beirut, talabat pledged to donate 100% of all the profits made from orders during #LunchforLebanon on August 12th, 2020. During this period, talabat users all over the MENA region placed orders knowing all profits were going to be donated to Lebanon in efforts to restore the damage. In a span of only four short hours (between 12 - 4pm), 115,000 orders were placed. This is such a compassionate gesture, and we are so proud of the region’s leading food delivery and grocery app to have been one of the first to act so swiftly and deliver financial aid. In addition to the donations which came from us the people, talabat generously donated 106

an additional 130,000 euros to the people of Lebanon. Solidarity at its finest and a reminder that we are never truly alone. All donations were sent to Lebanon through the Kuwait Red Crescent Society. Talabat also had a few words to everybody who supported the cause thanking them for being the reason behind the sizable donation in which they stated “talabat would like to express its heartfelt thanks and gratitude to all its customers…who supported the people of Lebanon, through ordering #LunchforLebanon on August 12. During this period, talabat users placed over 115,000 orders region-wide.” In a similar statement also by talabat, Tomaso Rodriguez, CEO, disclosed that “the employees of talabat feel humbled to [have been able to] facilitate #LunchforLebanon, as well as the additional 130,000 euros donation.” The idea behind #LunchforLebanon was to provide an accessible way for people to donate to the cause. And since ordering with talabat is as easy as 1-2-3 and a daily occurrence for many

people, this was the perfect way to do it. It was truly amazing to see talabat customers and restaurants all across the region stand united for a shared purpose and support the people of Beirut. Talabat also shared with bazaar that they were humbled by all the activity happening on social media “the amount of people sharing following the incident that took place, contributed to outstanding awareness of the current situation in Beirut…. our farthest order was placed from Berlin, for a customer in the region, which is truly testament to the love that people have for Lebanon”

KLC VIRTUAL RESTAURANTS EXPANDS TO DUBAI Dubai foodies can now order from over 20 KLC brands! By bazaar staff

Now we’re sure you’ve heard the rumors and we are here to confirm! Local food revolution leaders, Kuwait London Company has made an entrance in Dubai’s marketplace. For the past decade, KLC has been making its mark in Kuwait, but recently the company decided to spread the love to the rest of the Gulf.

For a successful expansion, they teamed up with a local cloud kitchen operator in Dubai that provides them with the appropriate space, ingredients, and equipment. Heavily trained chefs were sent across to oversee the operations and ensure the same high standards implemented in Kuwait were available there. Dubai foodies can now revel in the amazing flavors with over 20 brands currently operating. These include Chubby Balls, Proper Sliders, Humble Burgers, Minime Pancakes, Xsliders, Hatch Chicken, Chubby Crepes, Chubby Cookies, Junkyard, Project Pasta, Something Italian, The Kitchen, Thrive Salad, Top Salad and Taco Eataco. We could just imagine the joy customers will discover when sinking their teeth into their first try of the Mushroom Slider at Proper 108

Sliders, as well as their reaction when they dive into their first taste of the famous Chubby Cookies. We were also thrilled to learn that KLC has a plan to unveil the rest of the brands by the end of this year. With the current state of the world, cloud kitchens have become the go to for many establishments. Cloud kitchens utilize commercial kitchen use for the purpose of preparing food for delivery or takeout only, with no dine-in customers. For some restaurants, a small dine in space is available. Being a leader in cloud kitchen operations in the region, way before corona days, KLC has been fully invested in optimal food preparation and delivery. Catering to the Business Bay, KLC currently has one cloud kitchen in Dubai. Subject to demand, the company plans on expanding in that sense as well.

Being a cloud kitchen, they have been very fortunate and flexible, which allows them to be insignificantly affected by current events. When asked how the Dubai market has responded in comparison to Kuwait’s market, Co-Founder & CEO Mubarak Jaffar stated “The Dubai market is different from the Kuwaiti market, and because of this we saw our brands perform differently there. After being in the Kuwait market for over 10 years, it is exciting to now face a new challenge in Dubai. Consumer behavior is different across the GCC and our diverse portfolio of brands has allowed us to tap into different segments of the market. Operating in Kuwait one of the most competitive online food delivery markets in the world has prepared us to tackle other competitive markets in the GCC.” The company has been loud and

creative in its presence, and the market is responding successfully to the brands out there. This is a very exciting time for KLC and we are proud of our Kuwait founded company to be making huge moves! The pandemic hit unfortunately during the GCC expansion this year with UAE being the starting point. Although plans have been delayed now, nonetheless the company is still working hard to see out all other expansion plans to the rest of the GCC region by expanding to Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Bahrain. Each market is being researched and analyzed and you bet that the clients are going to get the same delicious food we are getting locally! Operating previously as virtual restaurants has been a strength for the establishment and helped KLC shine better than most players in the food game. Another very important point made about the Dubai market in comparison to the Kuwait market, was the higher demand for cuisines such as desserts, pasta, and Mexican. Since the company’s teams work hard on studying the market and delivering, they are listening and will respond very soon!

THE ALREADY PERFECT PIZZA JUST GOT BETTER

Same delicious Blaze Pizza is now low carb with a new cauliflower crust option! By bazaar staff

During quarantine we tried making our own pizza and while kneading dough was therapeutic, we were relieved when we learned that restaurants could receive diners again, still deliver and offer car pickups. Naturally, our first option for pizza night is Blaze Pizza, and we were counting down the days until we are reunited with our favorite pizza once again.

You can rest assured that we were standing at the door of Blaze Pizza on Tuesday the 18th of August for a breakfast pizza to celebrate the restaurant’s reopening and one more step towards a return to pre-COVID-19 normalcy. But prior to the opening, we loved taking advantage of Blaze Pizza's car service. Heading out to Blaze Pizza is like a mini road trip vacation. We cranked up the AC and the music on our way to get our Blaze Pizza fix. The Blaze team made the experience easy, safe and convenient. Upon arrival, we were greeted with a huge sign with a QR code that can be scanned from any phone. The link then takes you to a digital menu so you can make your order and pay. The entire process is contactless, high tech and ends in delicious pizza satisfaction, what more could anyone ask for? Well, we still really missed dining in the restaurants because while we loved the novelty of eating our pizza in the car while it was still too hot to handle, we loved walking down the aisle, choosing our toppings and watching our delicious pizza creation enter the fast-fired oven. When we walked through the doors, we noticed how there were reminders everywhere that things have changed and we appreciated all the precautions that made us feel safe. From the posters reminding us to keep our distance, to the empty tables and booths to make sure that patrons could dine safely without being too close to other diners. We also visited Blaze Pizza to try out the new cauliflower crust pizza. It is a low carb, Gluten free base option that is perfect for anyone who is counting their carbs or has a gluten intolerance. The dough lovers among us were skeptical of the vegetablebased alternative, but became converts after trying it. It is chewy, crispy and light, which balances perfectly with any signature pizza or toppings of your choice. We ordered a Hot Link with extra Halloumi cheese, which is another recent addition to Blaze’s plentiful options of things to add to your pizza. But

112

since we weren’t really trying to avoid carbs we ordered a side of potato wedges to balance things out. The order came with a dipping sauce that was so creamy and spicy. Pizzas at Blaze have always been 11 inches in diameter, but with the introduction of delivery and pick ups the brand has added a larger sized pie to their Delivery menu. The Large is 14 inches and while you might assume that 3 extra inches don’t amount to much, they really do especially when you factor in that it is a slightly thicker crust. It hits you in all the right spots, perfect for sharing with hungry family members or enjoying solo at home. Our adventure into the land of vegetable-based crust empowered us into the land of vegan Chorizo made with soy protein. The spicy meat substitute packs a strong punch of flavor that we were not expecting but instantly fell in love with. Instead of using their usual serving ware, everything was packed in their instantly recognizable recycled biodegradable boxes to avoid any contamination and to make sure that everything is safe and hygienic. The staff were wearing their masks and gloves at all times. Guests are also asked to wear their masks until they are seated at the table, and may unmask while they enjoy their delicious meal. We had no idea how much we missed Blaze Pizza because while ordering in was a good substitute, it turns out we just love the experience of visiting the restaurants, and we’re never taking that for granted again.

Blaze Pizza is available for dine-in and takeaway at Grand Plaza, The Avenues, Murouj, Ahmadi Park – KOC Club, Arabian Gulf Street – Bneid Al Gar and Jabriya. Car service is available at Arabian Gulf Street, Ahmadi Park and Jabriya. Follow Blaze Pizza on Facebook @BlazePizzaMiddleEast and Instagram @Blazepizzame. 113

SEPTEMBER SKIES It’s typically September that brings many of Kuwait’s residents back to its shores. Either returning from holiday travels or from touching base with our families, students are readying themselves to start the new term and everyone appears eager to settle back to life again. Except for the roads, no-one is ever happy to be back on the roads. But this year so many residents never left, and students and teachers have been dipping their toes into the waters of online learning over the summer already. So, what does this month and music have in store for us? There will be some readjustment necessary, but the one consistent for this time of year is that the album releases are many and bountiful across all genres.

SOMETHING NEW

WE ARE CHAOS

WHAT IS THIS THAT STANDS BEFORE ME

END THE SUMMER TIME F(OR)EVER

It’s probably no coincidence that this agent provocateur chose September 11th to release We Are Chaos but, much like education results on the whole around the globe, reportedly the album doesn’t live up to expectations based on Manson’s previous 10 album performances. The title track was released as a single in June, and although written pre-COVID-19 is still a pent-up mish mash of rage, madness and social commentary. Manson said that when he listens to [the album] now, “It seems like just yesterday or as if the world repeated itself, as it always does, making the title track and the stories seem as if we wrote them today.”

Over five decades from 1968 – 2017 Ozzy Osbourne was the lead vocalist for the Brummie band Black Sabbath, hailed as the pioneers of heavy metal music. This two disk vinyl album by label Sacred Bones to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the self-titled Black Sabbath and Pioneer LP’s. Various artists from the label’s roster take on a compilation of Sabbath covers reimagining some of the band’s most beloved songs. Like the new normal everyone is experiencing now, listen to the new Sabbath sounds brought to you by artists like experimental folk singer Hilary Woods, psych rock band Moon Duo, and 80’s Russian-style rock group Molchat Doma..

Producer Spencer Stephenson’s first solo album is a mix of bass-heavy abstract hip hop, spiraling psychedelia, and disco-house. “I came up with the title in fall of 2018, so it was never meant to speak explicitly about pandemics or protests,” Stephenson comments, “but in the years I was putting it together I couldn’t help but acknowledge that an era of complacency was coming to a close for me and for the world.” This album asks the listener to take another look at the sun. What rejuvenates us can destroy us all through global warming, and that’s one fever the vaccine can’t help us with...

TO REMEMBER

SEPTEMBER – SINGLE 1978

CRANK DAT SOULJA BOY – SINGLE 2007

TRUTH HURTS – SINGLE 2017/2019

Recorded in September 1978 this phenomenally successful disco/R&B ditty and its performers, nominated for a Country Music Television Music Award for Best Performance that same year, passes the test of time to this day. With the famous opening line of “Do you remember, the 21st night of September,” and the compelling but nonsense “ba de ya lyric” written by Allee Willis – writer of the Friends theme song “I’ll be there for you,” it’s hard to keep a great track like this down. Specifically used as a tool to drive album sales this song has been covered by many and re-released in 1999 and again in 2014 as a December holiday version.

Steel drum sampling makes this track stand out. A percussion instrument hammered out of 55-gallon oil drums; the steel drum hails from Trinidad & Tobago, but it’s probable Soulja Boy’s hailed from his computer. Soulja Boy managed to crank out seven weeks at number one with this single, in the US only matched by Rhianna’s “Umbrella” in the summer, and beaten only by Beyonce’s “Irreplaceable” which was number one for eight weeks at the start of the year. This song with its instructional lyrics produced a dance craze, as well as outrage due to the nature of the lyrics not heard on the “clean” version for radio play.

And boy does it, as we’ve learned since this time last year. Listening audiences were coming out of the faux romance of the Mendes Cabello collaboration “Señorita”, and TikTok success lunged Lizzo to the forefront, powerhouse lungs looming large telling it like it is, and definitely not from a position of, “poor me.” This is a woman who knows her worth. “Why men great till they gotta be great” perfectly represented by the censoring on Top 40 Green Bay Wisconsin radio of the lyrics “new man on the Minnesota Vikings” as the Vikings are the main rivals for the NFL North division Green Bay Packers.

SHOW US YOUR KITS SHAKE SHACK NOW DELIVERS DO-ITYOURSELF KITS FOR ITS SHACK-CAGO DOGS AND SHACKBURGERS By bazaar staff

Imagine getting that hot dog or burger craving but then you’ve got to go out and get the components, or your favorite Shake Shack location may be at capacity when you arrive, and the queue for take away or car service is longer than you thought it would be. How much easier would it be for your favorite dogs and burgers to come to you? Shake Shack this summer has blown us away with their perfectly packaged and proportioned separate kits for their famous Shack-cago Dogs and ShackBurgers. As they’ve done all the preparation for you, it’s super easy to enjoy Shake Shack deliciousness at home, and to be proud of the meal you produce. One thing that is noticeable once you’re done cooking and eating is how very simple it is to clear away all the mess, because everything comes already prepped and packed. There are clearly written, and simple instructions in both English and Arabic, and you can scan the QR code on the delivery box to watch a cool video of Shake Shack's chef preparing the burgers. You barely need anything to get to enjoy that Shake Shack experience where you are; just a heated surface, butter and something to flip with. Happily, unexpected savings somehow always makes this kind of quality food taste even better, and kits are priced at even better value than eight single purchase items would be for both the Shackcago and the Shack burger. We started with the Shack-cago Dog kit first. The Martin’s non-GMO potato buns, already sliced, were still fluffy having been placed carefully into the delivery box. And wonderfully, the hot dog sausages themselves were already split down the middle to give us the ideal flat top experience. With eight dogs in the kit, there was more than enough of the cheese sauce and condiments to be able to slather on so much that it squeezed out over the edges when biting into the dog. Perfection, because you can choose to build it however you like. Make sure you remember to take out all the cartons so you don’t miss out on the mustard, green relish, tomato sauce and chopped cherry peppers. We overlooked the cherry peppers thinking it was tomato sauce, but on closer inspection realized our error. Thank goodness we spotted it, because adding a dollop of the distinctively flavorsome cherry peppers made the entire Shack-cago Dog taste experience jump up a notch. Having merely whet our appetites on the mouthwatering hot dogs, we eagerly unpacked the ShackBurger kit. With super thick patties of 100% Angus custom beef blend these promised 116

to be meaty and juicy, plus the beef is hormone and antibiotic free. We sprinkled on the salt and black pepper seasoning from the provisions, smashed the sizzling patties onto the griddle and beside them placed the pre-sliced Martin’s potato rolls for searing. 100 YEARS OF RAUCH From a small cider mill to global juice kings By bazaar staff

Nothing happens overnight and no success is instantaneous. It takes years of hard work, sweat, tears and toil to become a global giant like Rauch. The Austrian beverage company, based in Rankweil was founded in 1919 by Franz Josef Rauch. He started the family business as a cider press for neighboring farmers, and the operation grew to industrial scale over the next century. Till this day, the company is still owned and run by the family. Four generations of Rauch’s have been providing us with our favorite juice. Four generations have been managing the most motivated staff and striving for the highest quality. The leading fruit juice producer in Europe is quenching thirst in 100 countries worldwide. The source of goodness of this empire is 120

fruit, and Rauch recognizes that nature has gifted humanity with the most valuable gift. By actively working on the economical, sustainable and careful use of this collective resource, they take responsibility and remain committed to the environment. Their values are clear and simple: Make the best tasting juice without harming the planet.

By the 1960s, the company had started expanding their retail division in Europe and in the 1970s, Rauch arrived at the Arabian shores. The juice was an instant hit and became the Rolex of drinks. Everyone wanted it but no one could recreate it or anything similar. The introduction of Tetrapak packaging in the 1980s was another leap in the right direction. The new and improved boxes were lighter, easier to store and handle. For consumers, they were more convenient to use. The company continued to grow and expand in the 90s and into the 2000s. Until 1994 all of the production plants were in Austria. That year, Rauch opened their first factory in Hungary, then added Switzerland in 2005 and Serbia in 2006 to their growing list of manufacturing operations. But perhaps one of

the most important changes in the way juice was manufactured, was the ability to pasteurize juice. Pasteurization is a process in which fruit juice is treated with mild heat, usually to less than 100 °C, to eliminate pathogens and extend shelf life. When you are shopping, it is easy to get confused but when you buy Rauch juice you know you are getting the best quality because they continuously test – starting with the fruits and ending with the juices! Everything is automated including sample measurement in state-of-the-art laboratories. The staff is diligent and committed and with more than 100 years of experience and ISO-Certification since 1993, you are always going to get the perfect glass of juice. First the fruit is delivered, washed and sorted manually. Next, it is mashed and pressed. Fruit is

only usable for a very short time frame. It needs to be at maximum quality, taste, aroma, sugar content and nutritional value. If it is unripe or too ripe, it is discarded. The juice is then filtered so that pulp and other bits are removed before it is concentrated. A semi-finished product can now be stored as concentrate or blended before it is pasteurized. Then it is filled into the containers and shipped all around the world. There are three main types of drinks that start as fruits; juice, nectar and drinks. Fruit juice is produced directly from fruit and the fruit content is 100%. Aromas, water, colorants and additives cannot be added. The same applies to nectars but it is usually for fruits that are too sour or are made from thicker purees. The next time you reach for your fruit juice

fix, make sure you are grabbing a Rauch juice, because they are made from the freshest fruits without any nasty additives. So you will be getting all the goodness.

You can find Rauch juice in all co-ops, supermarkets and quality retailers. For more on Rauch follow @raucharabia on Instagram. 121

Shoes (F. & S. II.253) (1980) – Andy Warhol

King of Denmark Cigar

Rosan Diamond Credit Card

111Skin Celestial Black Diamond Cream

Aviar R67 Mustang Fastback

Lotus Mahal

If you think that buying new shoes with no fancy event to go is a good idea, you’ll think buying an illustrated print of shoes for over 31,000 KD is beyond brilliant. The screenprint on Arches Aquarelle paper has been sprinkled with diamond dust, predating Paul Simon’s Graceland ditty on gem encrusted soles by 6 years. The inaugural Prints & Multiples biannual auction of Sotheby’s London’s Prints Department is this month, and promotes the work of modern and contemporary master printmakers with a selection of graphic works spanning the Belle Epoque to the present day. Bidding opens on September 7th for this limited piece, one of only sixty ever printed.

Who among us hasn’t complained about our skin being in outrageous condition because of the close proximity of facemasks made from inferior textiles over the last 6 months. If your aesthetician has been refusing to turn up to work at your specially built mcmansion spa then it’s time to start slathering on the creams yourself. At a mere 690 KD per ounce 111Skin has the perfect salve. Celestial Black Diamond Cream is A. worth more than platinum or gold and B. subtly keeps the help in their place as they dust around the bottle on your bathroom shelf, waiting eagerly for that one day a year when we celebrate International Domestic Workers day on June 16th.

Unlike most singularly minded monarchs this cigar is customizable to the taste of the buyer. Only 3979 of your hard-inherited dinars need go up in smoke to attain one of these phat stogies. Wrapped in gold foil, these come bearing your name and personalized with a diamond, gold and silver crown. Complemented with a 24K gold crown-shaped humidor, this is one to enjoy for hours while plotting world domination and manipulation of the masses with your cronies. The strength of the taste can be inversely proportional to the size of the cigar, so if you like it mild, ladies, expect your male counterparts to be intimidated, and gents, your chauffeur better drive a Mini.

Not only are the Ruskies releasing enough squirrels keeping the proletariat distracted but they are also providing an electric toy muscle car for our entertainment. The Aviar R67 is built on the Tesla Model S wrapped in an all-carbon-fiber body styled to look like a classic 1967 Mustang fastback. The good old days some say. The R67 will have all the usual tech features including HEPA air filtration to keep out the covid, along with a retro-inspired leather interior, all-wheel-drive, and a range of 507 km (top speed 250 kph) which is perfect for Kuwait’s 499 km of coastline. Get the chopper to take you back to the palatial pile with all the lights on and the AC running.

We’re positive you have just as much cash in the hand as Trump likes to say he does blah blah, but as it's such a burden carrying the bulky, stuff around with you, choose to use a card instead. If your spending is considered an artform now boutiques are back, flash the credit with a custom card turned into an exquisite work of art. For only 15,305 KD gild the plastic in mother of pearl, gold, and precious gems set by the finest lapidarists. “Each card created by Rosan Diamond is a true work of art, an exemplar of the way in which beauty transforms the mundane,” boasts the website. And there could not possibly be anything more mundane than money.

It's not quite the time to be fuelling up the Lear and jetting off to foreign parts, seen-to-be-seen to be doing the right thing in these dire-for-others times and all that jazz. So, if you did want to staycation and block off beach access to common types, there’s no better way to do it than with the 2500 KD, 700 square foot Lotus Mahal. Granted it's miniscule, hence the teensiest of price tags, but it should be just enough to deter the undesirables from wandering onto the shoreline and disturbing the sands where you could be littering your own caviar tins. Tell them there’s a wedding or something. They’ll never know the difference. Have they ever even seen one of our weddings?

Trash Tag Kuwait

It has never been simpler to volunteer for a beach clean-up. Trash Tag provides the essentials like gloves and trash bags so all you need to do is bring your energy with you! This volunteer group has been cleaning beaches for years in Kuwait, fighting the negative impacts of marine litter and waste pollution. For example, every morning on Salmiya's beaches you can see yellow trash bags stuffed full from the remnants of beach-goers feasting and frolicking on the sands. These have been collected by Ministry hired teams but, there is so much littering across all areas of Kuwait's shoreline that Trash Tag's volunteers could be working every day alongside the yellowjumpsuited teams, and still not finish. You have only to look at the immediately poor state the beaches were left in once lockdown was lifted to see how much work there is left to do, particularly with education . Thankfully Trash Tag volunteers lead by example. Working under #projectcommunity Trash Tag collaborates with other charities to deliver food and children’s toys to vulnerable communities and women’s shelters, and have also organized a blood donation drive. Now they have another mission. #projectmymai pushes an inclusive and sustainable community approach to drinking water. RAISING CANE’S SPEED AND CONVENIENCE Raising Cane’s has been preparing 24-hour marinated premium chicken tenderloins to perfection for fifteen years. Now in Kuwait there are five different ways for you to get your hands on those tasty chicken fingers, sides, and combo meals. By bazaar staff

124

It may feel like a lifetime ago but it was just at the end of 2019 that Kuwait was enjoying the first ever Raising Cane’s Drive Thru in Da’iya Co-op. The Raising Cane’s Arabian Gulf Street branch, is located on the seaside by Bneid al Gar, and this bright spacious location proudly features the latest Raising Cane’s Drive Thru in Kuwait. Safe, easy access for those of you who like to dine on the run, or if you only have a moment to grab your favorite chicken fingers combo. If you don’t fancy driving through to that side of Kuwait, and it’s more convenient for you to visit the Jabriya branch, then you can now experience car service personally delivered by the restaurant staff directly to you. Scan the QR code for the menu, choose what you want while relaxing in your airconditioned automobile rocking out to the radio, swiping through TikTok or catching up on emails. Car service is also offered in the Shuwaikh branch so if you don’t have long for lunch and want to drive over quickly for a fast pick-up, the eager staff are waiting to take your order. Busy Shuwaikh industrial workers who are close enough to pop across to the restaurant can nip in quickly to order and take away, as all Raising Cane’s branches are now offering take away alongside the limited capacity dine-in opportunities. With all these ways to get your chops around Raising Cane’s delicious goodies, how can you trust that someone doesn’t just walk into the restaurant and get served before you while you’re waiting in the car or at home? To make sure the kitchens

prepare your meal as soon as you’ve ordered it, an order sequence system is used which may not sound sexy but it certainly delivers great customer service. There are even designated crew members to manage the various order channels, so whether the branch is calm or super busy they can remain focused on serving you. With that type of service comes responsibility, and the safety of customers and workers is of paramount importance to Raising Cane’s. To that end a number of measures have been put in place which are immediately apparent. As well as the basics of face masks and gloves, which you will see on all employees and delivery drivers, there are sneeze guards used in all branches, and clearly marked out are socially distanced spaces. An online menu is available, and digital screens or

menu boards are in use but the hand held menus are still there if that’s your preference. If you are dining in rest assured that all surfaces and the dining tables are cleaned frequently. Tables are also tented for additional social distancing. You will also notice hand sanitizer is out for all to use, which is good practice anyway because you’ll want to get your hands dirty devouring those Raising Cane’s chicken fingers with side orders of Texas toast, crinkle-cut fries and coleslaw.

To order Raising Cane’s click on the link in the bio of the Instagram account @raisingcanesme. For a list of locations and service times visit the store updates highlight. 125

There are no teachers, no holidays, and no friendships, save strategic ones. Survival is more important than any letter grade, for the school won’t allow its students to leave until they graduate…or die! The rules are deceptively simple: Don’t walk the halls alone. And beware of the monsters who lurk everywhere. El is uniquely prepared for the school’s dangers. She may be without allies, but she possesses a dark power strong enough to level mountains and wipe out millions. It would be easy enough for El to defeat the monsters that prowl the school. The problem? Her powerful dark magic might also kill all the other students.

The Language of Flowers is a full-color guidebook to the historical uses and secret meanings behind an impressive array of flowers and herbs. The book explores the coded messages associated with various blooms, from flowers for a lover to flowers for an enemy. Mysterious and playful, the language of flowers has roots in everything from the characteristics of the plant to its presence in folklore and history. Researched and illustrated by popular artist Jessica Roux, this book makes a stunning display piece, conversation-starter, or thoughtful gift.

POSITIVE FIRST SEASON FOR THE TAG HEUER PORSCHE FORMULA E TEAM Porsche completes its debut season of all-electric racing as one of the best new coming teams. After a season which began in Saudi Arabia last November before pausing following the fifth round in February due to COVID-19, the ABB FIA Formula E Championship resumed for an intense nine days of racing at the historic Berlin Tempelhof airport to wrap up the final six rounds from August 5 to 13. For the TAG Heuer Porsche Formula E Team’s debut season competing in the world’s first all-electric road racing series, it overcame adversity to finish eighth with 79 points, making it the most successful debut in the past five seasons of the championship, while drivers André Lotterer and Neel Jani claimed eighth and 20th places respectively in the Drivers’ Championship. Vice President Porsche Motorsport, Fritz Enzinger said the learning curve was steep but already has his sights set on 2021: “The last Berlin race represented the conclusion of what was in many ways, an extraordinary season in the ABB FIA Formula E Championship. We have celebrated our debut in fully-electric motor racing and achieved success from the get go. “We scored points with the TAG Heuer Porsche Formula E Team in eight out of 11 events which is an outstanding record for a newcomer to Formula E. Huge thanks to the drivers Neel Jani and André Lotterer, as well as our partners.” Formula E is the most competitive environment for driving the development of high-performance electric vehicles and the TAG Heuer Porsche Formula E Team is in good company with no fewer than 12 teams and 10 manufacturers taking part in the 2019/2020 season. CUSTOM HAMILTON WATCH FEATURED IN CHRISTOPHER NOLAN’S NEW SCI FI ACTION SPECTACLE TENET Hamilton designers and engineers, in collaboration with the design team from Christopher Nolan’s new film, Tenet, produced a custom-made watch with unique features that only Hamilton was trusted to bring to life. A favorite of filmmakers for decades, Hamilton timepieces have played an integral role in films and inspired audiences. “The Murph” they created for Christopher Nolan’s hit Interstellar became a fan favorite, and a clock they designed for Stanley Kubrick’s iconic film 2001: A Space Odyssey influenced the invention of the world’s first digital watch. The Khaki Navy BeLOWZERO served as the base for the wristwatch featured in Tenet, but since the watch was only made for the film, they celebrate the collaboration with an inspired-by special edition. Cased in lightweight titanium, it features a blue or red-tipped second hand as a reference to key colors in the movie. Each color version will be limited to 888 pieces, the number chosen as a nod to the movie title, which is also a palindrome, something that reads the same backwards and forwards. LIBRA SEP 23 – OCT 22 Venus and Saturn, Libra’s two biggest planetary allies, begin the month conjunct in your house of career, status and responsibility. Use this time to ‘lighten up’ with your sense of over-responsibility. If you can’t love your work, then try to work with love. Take the pressure off of yourself wherever you can. Do things around the home to make you feel more cosy and special.

SCORPIO OCT 23 – NOV 22

VIRGO AUG 23 – SEP 22 Happy Birthday! This is your month so be sure to enjoy it. You are burning with inspiration, ambition and likely yearning for a new sense of direction. It’s time to rebalance that rational, analytical part of you with your feeling, heart and passion for life. It simply won’t suffice to plan things out in your usual methodical manner. Trust yourself and the Universe. Being in control is vastly overrated.

ARIES MAR 20 – APR 19 You might be feeling a temporarily frustrating block in the flow of your creative energy. While this won’t last very long at all, it will give you perspective on how you sometimes use your emotions. This is a great time to learn more about surrender and to synchronize with the timing of the Universe. In advance of this period take the time to feel passionately about what you’d like to manifest in your life.

TAURUS APR 20 – MAY 20 This is an important time for matters like communication, writing and business. What would you like to communicate or accomplish? Where do you hold back in these areas and how can you change that? Use this month for home improvement and getting closer to the family. Give special attention to the children. The energies of romance and creativity are in the air.

GEMINI MAY 21 – JUN 21 The emphasis this month is on fourth house affairs: home, family and your emotional self. Things may feel just a bit overwhelming in the first half of the month. This is a time to nurture yourself, sort out relationship needs sensitively and be with the family. There may be deeper, nagging questions about career and life direction that are at the heart of your frustration. Be honest with yourself so you can achieve the fulfilment you deserve.

CANCER JUN 22 – JUL 22 Saturn’s “Who am I?” transit of your Sun sign gets an energetic, creative bounce from the Sun, Mars and Jupiter moving through your third house of mind, communication and business. Your mind is fertile and active and can help you out of a creative rut. September offers great opportunities to make new friends, promote yourself, advertise your business or create an internet presence.

LEO JUL 23 – AUG 22 You feel creatively fertile, ready to give birth to some new talent or aspect of who you are. This is a good time for precisely that as doors are opening in your job or your career field. Don’t let your anxiousness get the best of you early in the month. Pay close attention to family and home needs so that they receive appropriate and conscious attention. Finances should be doing well but avoid increasing your debt load without due consideration. 136

There is lots of energy available so pay particular attention to these areas of your life. Get a good grasp on your idealism and expectations so you don’t torpedo the potentially powerful results. You simply can not change other people. Change the lens through which you view them by adjusting your beliefs about yourself. There is a big ‘ah-ha’ to be found in reading or studying higher teachings that you are drawn to.

SAGITTARIUS NOV 23 - DEC 21 Your usual optimism may be a bit challenged when the month begins. There are some deep issues percolating which require your awareness. Your inspiration and motivation will be piqued soon enough, however. The portal is open if you would like to do some healing or service-related work. This is the time for you to dream things as they could be and say, “Why not?”

CAPRICORN DEC 22 – JAN 19 A lot of energy can be focused on relationship opportunities this month. That can mean a chance for romance for those who are actively seeking. For others, it signifies focusing on existing relationships and what they are telling you. Your thoughts would be welcomed. Opportunities for creative expression are at a peak this month. Visit your teacher, take a workshop or read a book.

AQUARIUS JAN 20 – FEB 18 Even though the last few weeks have made things as clear as mud, don’t sweat it. If you are the overly idealistic ivory tower type, it is time to get your heart and feelings out of cold storage! You are a great catalytic agent for change and reform so don’t keep it to yourself. Synergy is the secret to being a happy Water Bearer.

PISCES FEB 19 – MAR 19 Your creative energies are looking for just the right avenue for expression. Don’t rush the process; take your time to find what feels right for you. There are likely some matters that have been left hanging that require discussion. If you feel in a rut socially, some new, stimulating, supportive friendships may be in order. You are flexing your spiritual muscles now. Have faith in yourself.
