A COLLECTIVIST SOCIETY EXAMINED Developing resilience during crises in Kuwait By Juliet Dinkha and Aya Abdulhamid

Unprecedented times like the ones we are living through present us with the unique opportunity to conduct real-time research to further understand human behavioral psychology and interactions within a society. According to Psychology Today, Resilience is the psychological quality that allows some people to be knocked down by the adversities of life and come back at least as strong as before. Rather than letting difficulties, traumatic events, or failure overcome them and drain their resolve, highly resilient people find a way to change course, emotionally heal, and continue moving toward their goals .

Whether resilience is achieved or not depends on a number of factors influenced by the biological, social and psychological composition of the individual. Our study outlines the essential coping skills developed and fostered by individuals in a collectivist society, Kuwait, to aid in processing their experience of the crisis and becoming resilient. The study was conducted during the spike of the COVID-19 pandemic in Kuwait and targeted young adults between the age of 18 and 25 and received 99 responses. Using multiple methodologies—library research, media collections, structured questionnaires —our research focuses on ten key

questions about anxiety, depression, experience of the crisis, how individuals are coping and lessons learned for the future. Our combination of approaches allowed us to gather social, and cultural contexts that helped explain the meanings of young adults’ attitudes, emotions, and actions as it relates to the pandemic and how this is contributing to their resilience. Although the idea of this research was ignited by the spike of the pandemic, its findings present key understanding of young adults’ resilience and coping mechanism development, which still remain essential to build resilience outside the pandemic and in the face of any adversary.

KUWAIT AS A COLLECTIVIST SOCIETY Kuwaiti society is conservative in nature and generally classified as a collectivist society. Family, and larger extended family always play a vital role in the individual’s life in Kuwait, and whether directly or indirectly, which impacts one’s future and social choices. Carrying a certain family name is also associated with a sense of pride, pushing individuals to continuously seek approval from family and leaning towards social conformity. This has been changing over time, with the county being more exposed to western cultures and adopting liberal stances. The younger

generations are developing more individualistic approaches to their societal interaction, within a collectivist society. They are also encouraged by their family, which remains their main support system, to pursue realizing their personal identity and stand out in their society with continuous accomplishments. COVID-19 IN KUWAIT With the spread of the virus across the world, Kuwait was one of the first countries to adopt measures and restrictions to fight the spread of the virus and to protect citizens and residents living within its borders. With those different restrictions and changes to the normal life, the country’s residents were exposed to unforeseen and unprecedented experiences. How did the public deal with this crisis? How did this affect their current mindset and future views? What lessons have they learned and how did they learn to cope? DEVELOPING COPING SKILLS & RESILIENCE During the pandemic, respondents resorted to engaging in various activities to help them become less anxious and depressed to overcome the alarming health risks posed by the spread of the pandemic and the social restriction enforced by the government. The participants’ responses revealed four main themes which highlighted how they dealt with the COVID-19 crisis and helped them develop resilience. The four themes conceptualized include Cognitive Wellness; Interconnection to Self; Media Consumption and Social Support. Cognitive Wellness Respondents valued mental health and wellness and sought to achieve the same during the crisis as a coping mechanism. Subjects reported examples which correlated with this theme including “taking tips from experts in psychology”, “online therapy” and “staying positive”. This mentality of directing their mind to such acts were developed by the individuals themselves to alter their personal experience of the crisis and the change this reflects on their self-processing of the events around them. Other respondents focused on including positive self-talk into their daily routine to keep themselves optimistic and foresee the upcoming events in a positive light. Interconnection to Self Another common theme across the answers received emphasized on the individual solely, where respondents continued to engage in personal hobbies and interests as a mechanism to cope with their growing anxiety levels and the challenging situation this pandemic presented them with. Although Kuwait is mainly identified as a collectivist society, respondents regulated oneself as an individual during the time of crisis, hence resorted to self-centered activities such as “baking”, “reading”, “exercising”, “creating art”, “journaling” and “watching series”, amongst a number of other activities which are focused on the self. In order to foster resilience, one must be able to acknowledge the current adversary being experienced and try to develop the best 28

[...Continued]

Juliet Dinkha mechanism or coping skills to be able to go through this adversary and become resilient. Our sample in this study followed this notion and started influencing their own selves and regulating their actions as a form of building resilience. Even the act of “online shopping” as reported by one of the respondents is a form of self-gratification and is practiced at an individual level. Media Consumption The flow of information is today’s time is almost instant, especially with the rise of social media and immediate transformation transmitting. “Social media” was reported by several respondents as one of the main coping mechanisms they have found to have helped them cope with the developing pandemic. How media is consumed and what sentiments the audience are left with differs from a respondent to another. However, during a crisis in general, people would be more likely to try to look at the glass half full and not half empty, and this can be achieved by seeking both verified and positive news from official sources, and avoiding participating in the spread of rumors to support in limiting the negativity associated with its circulation. Correlating with this notion, our respondents reported that during the pandemic they have been doing the following: “keeping up to date with the latest verified news of the pandemic”, “following social media accounts of the Ministry of Health”, “trying not to read the news”, “not spreading rumors” and “not reading fake news”. Social Support Although during the pandemic, Kuwait was subjected to strict social distancing measures and curfews, around 80% of the respondents reported that they engaged with their family and friends as a measure to cope with the crisis. Having access to one’s social support system is a fundamental measure to cope with adversaries and become able to develop resilience towards such situation and that’s because one feels the support and receives it to be able to overcome

Aya Abdulhamid the hardship. Social interactions undertaken by our respondents were both direct and virtual. A number of the respondents mentioned that they were able to connect with their family and friends using the following methods: “talking to friends on the phone”, “scheduled Zoom meeting with my friends once every few weeks”, “family presence and support”, “group video calls”, “interacting with family members via WhatsApp” and “being around family”. CONCLUSION The above listed coping skills were conceptualized based on the respondents’ answers, which formed the basis for understating how the individuals in a collectivist society become resilient in times of crisis. Not only that resilience is evident to have been developed during crises, yet individuals were able to further foster their resilient self and envision a better future to be able to overcome the pandemic. Although several respondents focused on nurturing individual hobbies and interests as their coping mechanisms, their presence in a collectivist society helped them develop resilience during this pandemic. An advantage individuals have in a collectivist society is the immediate access to social support, mainly from family, due to the nature of the Kuwaiti society as a collectivist one, which encourages individuals to stay connected with their parents and family members, and in proximity as well, where individuals still continue to live in their parents’ house. This immediate social support which is accessible during crises helps individuals in developing a resilient self, at the time of crises and for other unforeseen circumstances.

ART MEETS SURREAL CREATURES Interview with artist Nadeem Haj Zein By bazaar staff

Forever fascinated by and fantasizing about art and its versatility, Nadeem has been drawing ever since he could remember. During his younger years, he drew weird, out of the ordinary creatures but never really thought much of it. It wasn’t until the age of 16 when he took art more seriously after a volunteer opportunity at ArtSpace in Kuwait.Â

30

Sumbraro and turkish coffee

At Artspace, Nadeem wore many hats from early 2017 till late 2018. He would give workshops, help out customers over there and provide classes. During his time there, his main medium of choices was acrylic on canvas. After his time at Artspace, Nadeem left so he could focus on attending university, he decided to attend AUK. Nadeem looks back on his time in AUK fondly, and says that being around a creative community and making friends with fellow artists gave him a new perspective on art. He spent a lot of his time sketching during classes and even started making collages, since they took a lot less time. Having decided art was what he wanted to pursue, Nadeem started planning on relocating to Montreal, Canada but COVID-19 came around and put a hold on things. A blessing in disguise, he was able to practice his art more diligently during his time in quarantine. He expressed to bazaar that although he “grew up around people with more traditional roles, this recent period has proven to me that I would like to study art”. During his time in quarantine, Nadeem was able to finish up a painting he had been working on for the past three years! The time off allowed him to experiment with paintings instead of the typical collages he was doing during college. He shares with us that his medium of choice remains to be acrylic on canvas. He loves to use it because it’s super versatile and readily available in Kuwait. Art is a form of expression, and when asked about his creative process that is so unique to every artist, Nadeem said it was about jotting things down that came to him in the moment “I make my art in the moment and don’t like to plan out too long”. A simple writing down of an idea that comes to mind and a reflection later on is the artist’s preferred way of making magic. When he has the time, he starts to work on canvas and while working, he starts to build upon it. The artist also added that “some things just come to you as you work.” When asked about what role he believes artists have in society, Nadeem does not hesitate to say artists are the “spices of society” and the key is “being as original as possible by expressing yourself”. A constantly evolving subject, art is to be enjoyed visually, but impeccable pieces stimulate the mind as well. When dissecting Nadeem’s art we can’t help but notice that the surrealistic pieces might have a deeper meaning. When asked about it, he giggled and told us about his favorite triptych. The three piece artwork signifies the three most important human emotions for the artist which are compassion, anger and virtue. The takeaway message from the paintings is to present a different type of feeling to the viewer. Compassion (‫ )عطف‬is an acrylic painting on canvas 75*120 cm and is the first of the series. “Compassion or thought, happiness or sadness? The relaxation to endure one’s thoughts,” says Nadeem. The artist also added that to the naked eye, the paintings may look out of the ordinary, but if you take a minute to dissect, you will notice that one of his most prominent themes in which he adds a mouth or an eye with branches coming out actually means so much more. The tongue symbolizes expression of oneself and the eye is for people to open their eyes to the world around them.

GHIDA BARAKAT Leaping into leadership By bazaar staff

Ghida Barakat, spent the past 15 years climbing the corporate ladders of some of the Middle East’s leading companies, such as National Bank of Kuwait, Alshaya Group and Al Humaizi Group – LSH. Her career enabled her to work directly with decision makers and CEOs alike and, as she honed and developed her training and coaching skills, developing many individuals along the way, she subsequently realized the untapped potential within some of her colleagues. It dawned on her that her true fulfillment came from supporting individuals and teams to claim their own sense of leadership, guiding them to skillfully steer the challenging situations on both personal and professional levels. Ghida’s strong devotion and commitment towards empowering people to remove roadblocks, create breakthroughs of their limiting beliefs, in both skills and mindset, unlock those hidden talents & cultivate them into positive actions, was the driving force behind her career shift to become a certified Coach & Trainer and to create Leap, coaching, training and Leadership development practice, currently based out of Kuwait. We spoke to Ghida to find out more about her journey, choices and leap of faith into LEAP coaching. How did you become a leadership coach? After completing all the professional certification that I believed would enable me to become a balanced, diligent, knowledgeable and respected business person, the valuable knowledge I gained allowed me to evolve into an Executive and Leadership Coach, Facilitator & Trainer that specializes in transformational & executive development. I have a unique talent of assisting people in attaining high levels of performance & effectiveness. I am also recognized for my genuine love of connecting with people, my immense belief in human capabilities, my passion for unlocking hidden and untapped potential, and my determination for challenging people beyond the limits they’ve defined for themselves, so making them unlock their own innate power. I work closely with teams and individuals from many diverse backgrounds and in today’s fast moving environments, so it allowed me to understand what makes people tick and what drives them towards their true potential and goals, something that gives great satisfaction. How do you measure your success as a coach? Nothing excites me more than seeing my clients ready and willing to claim back their lives and unleash their voice and inner power. To me this is the ultimate success, to witness them live up to their full potential, to free themselves from their limiting beliefs, to take more risks and achieving their goals. Their heartfelt testimonials and referrals are ways that reassure me that I’m on the right track. I also use, mainly for executives and organizations, other scientifically proven assessments and tools to benchmark and measure the success rate after an agreed period, so for every part of my role there is measure but ultimately it is customer satisfaction that drives my success. However, in light of this, I constantly remind myself that my clients hold the power, authority and responsibility for their own transformation, not me. There’s an old saying, “You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make it drink.” So, we can’t change our clients, only they have the power to change themselves! What 34

[Continued...]

we do is use proven and powerful techniques to guide and support them in their journey. It’s very important that this is clear because some think this is a magic pill. They forget that it requires consistency, commitment, letting go of old habits making room for the new ones and building those muscles in our brains bit by bit for the change to take place. For example, if you work out with a personal trainer once a week but neglect to control your food and not exercise for the rest of the week, will you see any change? People forget that we are switching a mindset that they have been conditioned to for many years and so yes there’s work involved, and it all goes back to how much you are committed towards your change? How important is it for you to live a life of fulfillment? How much do you want to achieve your goals? Leadership feels like such a broad term, how do you define it? Can anyone become a great leader? We often confuse rank and authority with leadership. Leadership has nothing to do with your position or status. It’s a decision, a choice, the best leaders see themselves in service of others and are actually great followers too, because they follow a cause bigger than themselves. That’s why there is no place for an ego when it comes to leadership, as it’s not about being in charge and making decisions, it’s about taking care of those you are leading. Leaders challenge the status quo; they create a culture around their visions and goals and involve others in it. They hold a high level of curiosity about their people, organization and communities by engaging their followers in a way that is exciting and inspiring. They hold a great commitment to evoking the best for the collective, generating an experience of inclusion and connection, while at the same time articulating a clear direction and purpose. While they are willing to lead from the front and pinpoint the way, they also know when to sit down and make room for others creativity and talent.

C

What advice would you give to someone who wants to become a better leader? We are designed to avoid pain at all costs. Our brain is gradually trying to lead us towards pain-free life, however constantly avoiding pain won’t do you any favors in the long run. In the modern age we have been conditioned to be more susceptible to being weak emotionally and even physically. If we don’t get enough likes on our Facebook or Instagram posts we feel down, discouraged, that we’re not good enough etc. if someone criticizes us, we dwell on it for days and feel lost and not at ease, as if we just left our phone at home. Like the human body, the more you work at it and put it through challenges, pain and exhaustion, the stronger and more flexible it will become and vice versa. The human brain works in the exact same way; when we avoid pain, stress and chaos, we become fragile and our tolerance for the stressors and disappointments that life throws at us plunges, so we start rejecting great opportunities that come our way, just because we believe we don’t have the grit and determination to take them on. Finally, we end up feeling sorry for ourselves, blaming others and the world for not letting us achieve our dreams. The only way to move forward is not by avoiding pain, but to embrace pain. We need to go straight towards that bumpy road, to make those tough choices and stick to them, to take risks and feel the discomfort. Athletes improve their results by working harder than last year, so, what we truly need is to stop running towards ultimate joy, because there’s no such thing, and instead embrace the pain and discomfort taking the rocky road to success. Pain is part of us, so, what will you do? Will you choose fragility or resilience? Remember that everything you do and everything you are is the product of that choice. Your level of success at work and in your relationships, your self-confidence, your health, etc. is a mere reflection of either embracing the pain for long-term goals & dreams, or avoiding them for short term pleasures, the choice is yours!

BURGAN BANK CATERS TO THE YOUTH Dana AlNesef tells us why smart banking is so important regardless of your age By bazaar staff

The youth segment in the banking sector is usually overlooked because there is no real defining aspect to what banking should look like between those ages. Between the ages of 15-25 many people are at completely different stages of their lives. Some are planning their weddings, while others are just graduating from high school. So, it’s safe to say that there is no one-size-fits all approach when it comes to financial advice, especially banking.

Dana AlNesef, Products and Segments Manager Thankfully, Burgan Bank has made this easier by incorporating different types of accounts to help people from all walks of life. Burgan Bank offers a dedicated youth account which happens to be the highest earning account in the market, in terms of benefits. It is an interest paying savings account targeted towards the youth in Kuwait (ages 15 –25) which offers a branded ATM card with an array of discounted benefits at partnering outlets. It can also be used for the purpose of transferring government allowance, parental funds or part-time job salaries. To make it easier for anybody to start, the account has no opening fee. There are several incentives of transferring to the Youth account at Burgan Bank and one of them is the 50KD instant cash reward upon transferring student allowance to the account, as well as receiving a FREE Burgan Bank prepaid card! 38

Along with the instant cash benefit, the Youth customers receive exclusive discounts from many trendy outlets that meet the segment’s shopping needs, including but not limited to free movie screenings at Grand Cinema and more! With certain merchants in Kuwait, Burgan Bank offers a wide range of deals exclusive to their customers within dining, gaming, fashion and more! The account also provides ongoing hit offers and campaigns tailored to the customers wants and needs. If you feel like your needs are specific and would like to discuss this with a banker, Burgan Bank also has that option! Since each account is tailored to specific needs of the customer, bankers are able to recommend the very best option that is suitable for each individual lifestyle. Preparing for the future can be a hefty task,

however having a savings plan in order to maximize financial growth is a very good start. Taking advantage of the opportunity to begin a Youth account with no opening fee, interest earning and no minimum balance charges is a smart move. Recently, bazaar had the pleasure of speaking with the products and segments manager at Burgan Bank, Dana AlNesef where she shared some important tips for the youth: Please introduce yourself to our readers. My name is Dana AlNesef and I’m a Kuwait University Business graduate, I first began my career in 2012 where I started working in the banking sector - sales division, during my time working in sales, I grew passionate about understanding what the market needs and how to create better products and services, which led me to the position I’m in today to pursue what I was truly passionate about.

What is your job title and your roles? I am the products and segments manager at Burgan Bank, a few of my main roles include managing and overseeing the development of products, segments and social media, as well as developing marketing strategies, marketing performance reports and monitoring market trends. How long have you been in banking? I have been in banking for over 5 years. What would you say is the biggest misconception about your profession? I believe the biggest misconception of banking is that some believe creativity is not welcomed nor needed in banking which is quite the opposite, at Burgan bank we are always encouraged by management to be creative and to think outside the box, the sky’s the limit! What makes banking with you and your bank different? What makes Burgan Bank stand out from the rest is that banking with Burgan Bank is truly a one of a kind experience, we treat our customers like family and because we know our customers best, their satisfaction is always our top priority. What do you like the most about your job? What I love about my job is that I feel that I’m always encouraged and supported, Not only that, but I believe Burgan truly believes in their employees. I have been guided to work on projects that I thought were beyond my abilities for both my age and knowledge. Working at Burgan has also a family environment where everybody is there for each other, There is an amazing spirit of cooperation where everyone works together and supports each other, I really have not found this kind of environment at any organization. If someone is interested in becoming a banker, how would they go about it? I believe the best way to become a banker is to start working at a division where you are in direct contact with customers. The best way to truly understand banking and to understand market needs is to understand it from the market itself. What are some common banking tips you would give our readers? An important tip is to always keep your banking credentials safe, and not to share them with anyone else through any channel. Also, make sure your contact details with your bank are up to date so you can always get instant updates on your account. For more information on opening a Youth account, visit your nearest Burgan Bank branch, call the bank’s Call Center at 1804080 or apply on burgan.com 39

NUTRITION AND BREAST CANCER

Guidelines for healthy eating and lifestyle choices By bazaar staff

Good nutrition may reduce the incidence, risk, progression, or recurrence of breast cancer. Although different studies are being conducted to determine the exact nature of the relationship between nutrition and breast cancer prevention, here is what we do know; improved nutrition reduces the risk of chronic diseases in general, such as diabetes, obesity, hypertension and heart disease. Good nutrition also enhances the overall quality of life. Therefore, it is safe to say good nutrition can lower a woman’s chance of developing breast cancer. To ensure good nutrition, we have gathered some pointers for you that have proven to constitute the guidelines of a healthy diet. One major point of discussion is whether a plantbased diet can help. Studies have shown that a lifelong commitment to a plant-based diet may lower a woman’s risk of developing breast cancer. It may also reduce the risk of recurrent breast cancer. Women at high risk should be extremely attentive to this sort of diet plan. So what does a plant-based diet consist of? A plant-based diet consists primarily of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, and plant protein sources. Although living plant-based in our cultures can often be difficult, finding a way to get the adequate amount of protein and nutrients at risk (vitamin B12, vitamin D, omega-3 fatty acids, zinc and iron) could boost your health tremendously. Protein should be included in every meal. With that comes the benefit of consuming plenty of fruits and vegetables. Our fruits and veggies contain various vitamins, minerals, fiber, and cancer-fighting phytonutrients such as carotenoids, lycopene, indoles, isoflavones and flavonols. Cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, kale, brussels sprouts, bok choy, collard greens and radish in particular, are particularly associated with a reduced risk of breast cancer. Nutrition cheat tip: vibrant, intense color is one indicator of phytonutrient content. A plant-based diet also includes legumes, beans, seeds and whole grain which come with a high fiber content. Fiber is known for its natural ability to bind to toxic compounds and carcinogens (substances that promote cancer) which are then later eliminated from the body. A high fiber diet also works to reduce hormone 40

levels that may be involved in the progression of breast cancer. Most importantly, a high fiber diet is also associated with less obesity. Some great concepts here in Kuwait that offer plant-based options are: Be Cafe, Bluezone, Superfoods, Clean Eats, Generation Acai, Vterra, Junaseatery, The Bowl and Ovo. High sugar foods should also be avoided since they are usually highly processed and low in nutrient value. In addition, these foods appear to increase serum insulin which appear to stimulate cancer cell growth. Sugars to be consumed in limited amounts include products made with refined grains or refined flours (for example: white breads, white rice, white pastas), alcohol, and desserts, such as candy, cookies, cakes, and pies). Several studies have also looked into the relationship of fat and the risk of breast cancer, but the results remain inconsistent. A potential elevated cancer risk may be, in part, due to the fact that a high fat diet stimulates increased estrogen levels, which is associated with breast cancer growth but further studies are needed to determine if in fact these lower levels lead to a reduced risk of breast cancer. Research indicates that the type of fat may be of greatest importance. All in all, a low to moderate fat diet with an emphasis on healthy fats is key.

Nutrition cheat tip: you should aim for fat to close to 20% of your total calories from fat, with less than 8% of total calories from saturated fat. A healthy diet is only one of several factors that can affect the immune system. Lifestyle changes and habits have a tremendous impact in improving your overall health and well being. When it comes to lifestyle, there are multiple different things that have proven to be good guidelines to follow for healthy living. These include being physically active, maintaining a healthy weight and managing stress. Since low levels of physical exercise appear to be associated with a higher risk of breast cancer, being physically active is ideal. Adequate fluid intake is also very important in maintaining a healthy lifestyle and diet. Fluid in the body helps carry nutrients around the body as well as flush out waste products. It participates in chemical reactions, protects joints, aids in the body’s temperature regulation, as well as many other processes. Therefore it is super important to keep water intake up to meet fluid needs. In honor of breast cancer awareness month, we hope that you found this article helpful! Pass it on to your loved ones at risk, or implement healthier guidelines into your life. For more health-related pieces, be sure to check out bazaar.town.

RED BULL FLICK: KUWAIT CHAMPIONSHIP EDITION

The Counter-Strike: Global Offensive tournament is now open for entry in October By bazaar staff

Red Bull is excited to announce that Red Bull Flick, the online Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS:GO) tournament, will be expanding into the GCC. Which means that players within our region will be able to join in on the fun and compete! The anticipated Kuwait tournament will take place on October 9th and 10th, 2020 where Kuwait will have a total of 128 teams entering, and 256 total players, over a 2-day period. Other Gulf countries hosting their own Red Bull Flick include the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, and Oman. And if participating wasn’t fun enough, the winners of each respective tournament will be eligible to win cash prizes in the amount of KD 400. The top two country teams chosen from the national competition will be invited to also play in the Red Bull Flick EU Pro Invitational. And while this is a professional game, Red Bull Flick attracts players from all walks of life including the professionals, avid semi-pro players, and amateurs to enter in the team-based battles. Teams may consist of two players. Signups are open and

42

players are encouraged to enter in the tournament. Just for this special occasion, Red Bull has also built five new maps. Practicing on these maps is highly encouraged for teams who wish to develop their own personal strategies. Some of the new maps include: Castle, Garden, Speedway, Matrix and the Himalaya which each have their unique setting and game mechanic to mix things up. The Red bull Flick Castle map asks you to hold the fort literally for 45 seconds, where the Matrix features teleporters to help you get the jump on your opponents. 20 years ago, Counter-Strike first launched and was a driving factor in the first-person shooter genre, where it was played alongside such games as Halo and others. Currently, the Valve and Hidden Path Entertainment game has moved on to a free-to-play model, where revenue is generated via sales within the game. The game is still played by professional esports athletes and weekend warriors alike, although this is a version of the game that very few will know firsthand. The Red Bull Flick rules are not the standard garden variety, where teams must either defend or eliminate depending on the side. In Red Bull Flick,

teams must hold the middle ground for a specific amount of time for each round. Barring that, they must hold the designated area for longer than the opposing team to claim their victory. When a team has two round wins against another team, the match is finished, and the winning team moves on to the next position in their brackets. Other rules specific to Red Bull Flick are that both teams start on opposite sides of the map, all teams have the same weapon respawns for fairness, and the only advantage is the availability of a single AWP spawn in a difficult to reach and very risky spot. That is continued and rounds are played until the timer runs out. The best part which has players and teams most enthusiastic, is that any team can win it all. Due to the game rules and new maps, this has become a brand new game of CS:GO. The advantage will always go to the team that can react and play well together. All about teamwork! To find out more about Red Bull Flick, visit @RedBullKuwait on Instagram and Twitter, and like @RedBull on Facebook, or visit the website redbull.com/flickkuwait.

ABDULRAOUF MURAD Discovering and documenting Kuwait’s culture and heritage through the built environment and architecture By bazaar staff

Abdulraouf Murad majored in business administration but has found his passion in history and architecture. When you meet him, he introduces himself as a photographer and researcher interested in documenting Kuwait’s modern heritage, and especially its urban history. His goal is to spread awareness about the importance of preserving historical buildings and highlighting the distinctive aspects of Kuwait’s modern history. His interest led him to dabbling in photography through practice and self-directed learning. And, despite never taking a course or class in the art, he has been teaching himself how to take stunning and deeply moving pictures. Not only are the photos beautifully composed and well-balanced, they tell a story of a country and people. In December 2018, he visited the Al-Sawaber residential complex; days later a public discussion arose and a team of volunteers called for the preservation of the complex and its re-exploitation. This discussion contributed to increasing awareness and the importance of preserving historical and distinctive buildings. He started researching and it became clear to him that over the past years we have lost many distinctive buildings and places that were demolished for no reason. That was when he decided to start documenting Kuwait’s urban legacy and spreading awareness about the dangers of obliteration and destruction that these spaces are facing. “Preserving the urban environment shows and highlights the urban development that the country has gone through. Demolition and rebuilding makes the country appear as if it is newly established, with all these modern buildings. Today if an old man headed to Kuwait Cty for a walk, where he spent his lifetime, he would find it very difficult to recognize any of it! Most of the places, homes and landmarks that he used to visit and spend his memories in are gone!” Abdulraouf told us. He wants to see distinctive historical places conserved because it is the preservation of generational memories that allows younger people to benefit from previous experiences. On the other hand, Abdulraouf believes that the repeated 44

demolition contributes to polluting the environment by creating tons of waste that is not properly discarded or treated. It is a waste and depletion of planet’s resources which is the opposite of the current global trend that calls for sustainability and the reduction of environmental pollution This doesn’t mean that he is against any kind of demolition. On the contrary, If a building does not carry historical value or distinctive experience, is not related to the memory of the country’s inhabitants and its presence constitutes an obstacle to development, then he has no objections to its removal. Sometimes he reads about a place and then goes to photograph it, and other times he sees the place then researches it. This insatiable curiosity has helped him rediscover Kuwait and highlight the amazing places that are often overlooked. Through his work, he’s trying to refute the belief that Kuwait is just shopping malls, cafes or restaurants. Instead, it is a country rich with history and culture that has evolved and developed over decades and centuries. His work has found an audience and fanbase in Kuwait. His thorough documentation of Kuwait’s Entertainment City and its current state of disrepair resonates strongly with his Instagram followers. In his opinion it is because this space carries happy memories for many generations and was a regularly visited destination for both Kuwait’s residents and visitors. For him personally though, the demolition of the Ice Skating Rink saddened him the most. Despite being officially registered by the National Council for Culture, Arts and Letters as a preserved historical building, and the many groups and specialists who demanded to preserve it, the rink was demolished with the intent to build a modern one. [Continued...]

up close & personal

He doesn’t just visit a location and take an Instagram worthy shot or two, instead he will take seemingly dozens of photos and attach them to well-thought out and researched captions. His visit to Failaka showed how much damage was done to the island during the Iraqi attack and occupation. He showed us bullet holes, debris and even signs that these were places that people once called home. “Indeed, visiting these places and wandering around was kind of a time-travel, and with a little imagination you can actually see and hear people used to live in these places, but you quickly return to the reality of abandonment, neglect and destruction of these facilities,” Abdulraouf explains. He hopes that the day will come that the current demolition and obliteration of historical monuments in a random and unjustified manner will stop, and that there will be more interest in the preservation and re-utilization of facilities. He wishes to see for the local community to realize that development and modernization does not necessarily need to be built on the ruins of the buildings of the past. He also hopes to witness the day in which one of Kuwait’s distinctive sites becomes registered on the UNESCO World Heritage List, as Kuwait is one of the few countries that has no recognized site registered.. Until then, he believes that the least an individual can do is photograph, document, highlight, and talk about these places. Which he will definitely continue doing and thinks that we can all join in and become part of the movement.

AWAKENING JOY

Happiness in challenging times with Tina Mundelsee By bazaar staff

Even the most mentally and emotionally resilient among us are starting to crack under the weight and pressure of the ongoing pandemic, financial uncertainty, fear and general anxiety. Times might be difficult, but we don’t have to be miserable. Yoga Therapist, Life & Relationship Coach and Author Tina Mundelsee believes that you can still live a joyful life in challenging times. Tina grew up in the beautiful surroundings of a small Bavarian village in Germany, but her curiosity for life and people motivated her to move to the city when she was 16, to volunteer at the institute for the blind and disabled before going back to school. After finishing her education in Germany, she worked and lived in Greece, Costa Rica, USA, Switzerland, on a Cruise Ship, Kuwait and finally in Sicily, Italy where she currently lives with her partner, a dog and a cat. There, she found her Yoga Family and opened her own studio Live Love Laugh Yoga several years ago. Today she wants to offer the world what she has learned and experienced to help everyone live a more awakened and happy life. Tina just hosted a free online summit that brought together top experts from all walks of life to share their wisdom and offered the audience support and inspiration during this challenging time of global change. If you didn’t catch the summit, you can find all the videos on Tina’s YouTube channel. We asked Tina about her work, the summit and asked her for some advice, here’s what she had to say: What was the most important thing you wanted people to take away from the summit? I guess the most important thing people will take away when I sum up all interviews is that we all have the same innate power. We can tap into this unlimited source of power to heal our old wounds from the past, let go, forgive ourselves and others, create the emotions we want and determine the outcome of our thoughts, words and actions to a great amount. We are not victims of life, life events or other people’s behavior. The world is not coming towards us. We have the power to choose in every moment of our life what a situation means to us, and the meaning we give to every single moment of our life determines how we experience it. We are not our thoughts but can create the thoughts we need to experience life as we want and to create our destiny to a certain level. I want people to take away the knowledge that there are many tools available for us to deal with the ups and downs of life in a better way. You lived in Kuwait for some time, what do you think was most unique about living in Kuwait? After living 10 years now in Sicily, I can say that the thing I miss most about Kuwait is people’s unique enthusiasm for anything new and their entrepreneurial spirit! I often felt so inspired by others ideas and motivated to create and grow. I had many Kuwaiti friends who set examples with their courage to invest into new businesses and new ideas to make the country and quality of life better. I found it unique and fascinating how even young people who studied abroad and came back home, still were so rooted in their mentality and so deeply connected to their beloved country. I found the hospitality of Kuwaiti people unique and of course the smells, sounds and tastes in the souk, the calling of the mosque in the morning and the burning summer sun on your skin. I always felt that many Kuwaiti people have a unique way of living their faith and at the same time are very open minded. Getting in touch and learning about another faith was personally very unique for me. What do you think people in Kuwait would benefit from learning the most? When it comes to thoughts and feelings, there is no difference between 50

nationalities, we are all human beings. So, as I said before, I think the most important thing we all have to learn is that we have immense power and are not victims of life or our own emotions. It is completely normal to feel sad or anxious sometimes but we can learn to deal better with these feelings. We can learn how to distance us from the constant chatter of our mind, accept it but not allow it to dominate us. I think the more we share and talk about our innermost struggles, the more we notice how similar we all are. We can shift our focus from our own problems onto the difficulties of others and look beyond our own little universe. Since so many of us are experiencing our life online, can people attend your sessions online? How would they do that? How would that differ from an in-person class? Of course, that is the beauty of the internet and our digital age. It does not matter where we are, we are able to connect. I used to run my own Yoga Therapy studio here in Sicily but I am focusing now only on my work as a coach or maybe better, a guide and friend, online. I meet with my clients via Zoom or Whatsapp and it is like sitting in the same room together. I listen to the needs and concerns of my client and then together we create new thinking patterns. I help my clients change their perception of things or circumstances and hence change their emotions about it. We can meditate together or I can guide my clients through an energy cleanse to let go of feelings of anger or fear. I teach my clients online in personal sessions or through online courses simple self care or energy cleansing techniques, drawing from my knowledge of Yoga Philosophy and from my studies with the leaders in the field of life and relationship coaching like Tony Robbins, Cloe Madanes and Magaly and Mark Peysha. I have just published my first book Yoga Coaching (available on Amazon) In this book I combine my knowledge of yoga and coaching and invite you to contemplate on your own thinking and behavioral patterns and to heal your old heart wounds to be able to enjoy the gift of life NOW and to enjoy harmonious relationships! What advice would you give to people who are not feeling OK that could help them right now? Take 10 minutes a day for yourself, all alone. Close your eyes. Observe the voice in your head, your mind, your thoughts. Observe your emotions. Observe your feelings. Observe what you hear and smell in this very moment and observe the judgmental attitude of your mind. Just notice how your mind makes a comment about everything, how your mind labels everything and every feeling. Do not get into a dialogue with your mind, just listen as the silent observer. Listen to all the complaints your mind has about the present situation and look at it like if it was the small version of yourself. Imagine yourself as a little kid, being unhappy because you do not get what you want and maybe even throwing a tantrum. Put your hands on your heart and start talking to that little version of yourself who is so unhappy right now. Tell yourself it will all be ok, ask yourself what you can change to make things better, instead of waiting for others to change. Be lovable and kind to that little inner unhappy child. Mostly, you will notice that this unease comes from an inner resistance to what is. It is your mind’s protest because something is not as your mind wants it or you don’t get what you want or you are afraid of losing something.

A HAPPY, HEALTHY NURSERY

DR. AHMAD ALBORGY

MEET TAIBA HOSPITAL’S BREAST RECONSTRUCTION SURGEON No one wants to get a breast cancer diagnosis for themselves or a loved one. It is scary but it is not the death sentence it used to be. Advances in medicine have led to better diagnosis, treatment, aftercare and reconstructive surgery. We spoke to Dr. Ahmad Alborgy, Taiba Hospital’s leading breast reconstruction specialist surgeon about the different options that are now available for cancer survivors. As a child, Dr. Ahmad Alborgy knew he wanted to be a physician. By the time he started his residency he had his heart set on becoming a surgeon and after his experience in the plastic surgery department, he had found his calling. Unlike other types of surgeries in which surgeons remove parts of the body, a plastic surgeon, especially a reconstructive one, is building or rebuilding parts. For breast reconstructions in particular, it is a very precise and delicate operation. It is also a fundamental part of a cancer survivor’s journey to a full recovery. The utilitarian function of breasts is breast feeding, but they are such an important part of a woman’s identity and self-image. “A woman losing a breast is comparable to a man losing a limb,” says Dr. Ahmad. He explained that only a very few minority of women choose not to have the operation, but for the majority it is a very important part of their treatment. Breast reconstruction is more than just aesthetic, the surgeon pointed out that a lot of scientific research has found evidence of a strong link between self-esteem and immunity. Patients who feel better about themselves, respond better to treatment and heal faster. There are two schools of thought regarding the timing. In some cases it is possible for the oncologist and the plastic surgeon to work together, removing the tumor and reconstructing the breast in one operation. This is less traumatic to the patient because there’s no physical loss. The other option is to wait until all treatments such as chemo or radiation are completed before reconstruction starts. This provides women with enough time to physically heal before they proceed to the next stage. Until recently, tumor removal from the breast would not only result in it being deformed or completely removed but it would often cause problems with arm and shoulder mobility and

swelling. New techniques have solved all of these issues and have paved the way for speedier and more comfortable recoveries. The operation itself can take anywhere from 8 - 12 hours. The operating team needs to be well trained and prepared. Dr. Ahmad commented that the family-spirit at Taiba Hospital makes his job much smoother. The vision at the hospital has always been one of healing in a comforting and welcoming environment and the current administration supports all staff members and doctors in that mission. Communication and trust are the underlying pillars for a successful doctor-patient relationship too. Dr. Ahmad told us that the best way to ensure a speedy and healthy recovery is patients’ understanding of the procedures and what they need to do. He provides them with a clear checklist of things and gives them his personal phone number so they can contact him if they have questions or need immediate help. This level of dedication and commitment from a surgeon is rare but really pays off for his patients. He regularly spends up to an hour in consultations making sure that everyone is on the same page and that they know what to fully expect.

Healing takes time and effort, it usually takes a patient about six weeks before they can return to ‘normal’ life. They should also expect to receive physiotherapy. Dr. Ahmad recommends therapy and counselling in conjunction with reconstructive surgery. Dealing with a cancer diagnosis and treatment is a traumatic experience and the support of the right mental health and wellbeing professional helps the patient deal with it with less anguish. According to the World Cancer Research Fund, in 2018 alone 2 million cases of breast cancer were diagnosed. However early detection and intervention really improve a patient’s odds. Seek medical help right away if you are worried so you can take action immediately.

FATIMAH AL MOUSAWI

Sharp, dynamic and comfortable out of her safe zone By bazaar staff

Kuwait is full of young, dynamic individuals who are the true movers and shakers behind many of our favorite brands and concepts. They’re the ones who push for change, innovation and constant improvement. We spoke to Senior Marketing Officer at Trolley, Fatimah Al Mousawi who gave us some insight into her job, her journey and how to get ahead in the field. How do you introduce yourself to people? I like to introduce myself as a young Kuwaiti woman who’s aspiring to become one of the top Arab business women in the region. How do you explain what you do at your job? As a Senior Marketing Officer, I get to handle anything from marketing budgets, print production materials, influencers, offline and online campaigns. I also get to coordinate with other departments and clients as well. You are currently the Senior Marketing Officer at Trolley, what does a typical day at Trolley look like for you? A typical day for me would be meeting with the marketing team to discuss current projects, meetings with other departments and assisting clients with marketing needs. Do you think your personality traits help you at your job, or can it all be learned? I’m sure everything can be learned with time. I believe the most important trait any person should acquire is adaptability. In marketing we have to be quick to adapt to the quick changes in customer behavior and market conditions. Adaptability is also a good trait for any employee working in any field. It is a crucial trait for employees who look to succeed in their career. What is your favorite thing about your job? I get to communicate and work with a lot of people. Internally and externally. What do you find the most challenging? I find new projects that I haven’t done before to be the most challenging, as I do not have the knowledge or experience to carry it out without minor hiccups. How do you develop and improve your skills? I like to take on new tasks or projects regardless of how scary or foreign it may seem at first. Any obstacles or new challenges outside of my comfort zone help broaden and improve my skills. If it doesn’t challenge you, it doesn’t change you (to the better, of course). 56

What did you want to be when you were younger? I did not have a specific career path in mind. But a few career paths that intrigued me were: Law, Psychology and English Literature.

Any childhood hobbies you still practice? I was always big on reading since I was a child. Still am, but due to the busy life, I haven’t been able to read as much as I did.

Did you plan your career this way? Or are you just taking it one step at a time? I took it one step at a time. When I first started university as a freshman, I applied as a management student. As I started taking classes in different business fields I fell in love with marketing and decided to shift to Marketing.

Any other hobbies you practice? Makeup artistry. I am currently working on establishing a beauty company during my free time.

If you could choose a different career what would it be? Knowing what I know now, I would not change a thing. However, I would have loved starting my side hustle a little sooner. What do you like the most about the marketing field? There’s never a boring day and there are endless possibilities to what can be done. What do you do to unwind? I like to sit in a quiet place and meditate or read a book, to walk after a long day at work and most importantly SLEEP! Side note, I like to watch Grey’s Anatomy on days I don’t feel like meditating or reading (no one’s perfect,LOL) What are your favorite things to buy at Trolley? I like to try new/exclusive items at Trolley when it comes to cold drinks and fresh food. I usually get donuts too.

What is one thing most people might not expect to learn about you? Some might find it weird, but I like to play sudoku or solve basic math quizzes during my free time. What advice would you give for young people interested in careers in marketing? Gain as much knowledge and experience as you can by doing every little thing asked of you (in short, never say no!). Converse with people from other departments and understand their flow of work as this will help broaden your understanding of the product or service you are marketing. Follow the best local businesses with great Social Media content and great campaigns. Analyze their every move and notice how people engage with them. Most importantly, execute what you’ve analyzed. You never know what works in the industry you’re in until you try different marketing approaches.

WORKOUT AT HOME

Red Bull athlete Mansour Al Safran tells us how to stay healthy at home By bazaar staff

r 250 Dishes Made Fresh

If you want a better quality of life then you have to take care of yourself. Self-care is usually associated with sheet masks and mani/pedis, but it can be as simple as putting your shoes on and working out three to five times a week for thirty minutes, depending on the intensity. Not only will this give you an endorphin high, it will also keep your bones and muscles healthy and ready to take on the world.

We’ve all had to change our routine over the last few months and the gym might not be as accessible as it used to be. Local BMX athlete and fitness enthusiast Mansour Al Safran has provided us with the perfect at-home workout that almost anyone can do. You can incorporate these movesets into your already established workout or do them over a long weekend.. The first set of exercises are related to the core muscles. These are the ones that surround the stomach. The exercises will work the abs, and other core muscles like the back muscles, and even the glutes, which also aid with balance, and supplement other workouts by making sure that no one muscle is needlessly overworked Begin with a spiderman plank, which is similar to a normal plank that has the athlete bringing the knee to the elbow, horizontally and in line with the rest of the body. Hold the position and activate all core muscles, then release, bringing the foot back to the starting position. 58

After that, get into the sit-up position on the floor for the wide leg sit-ups. Bringing the feet in pushes the knees out in a V-shape. The modification improves the intensity and focus of the core muscle groups. For the core exercises, a minute of each before going on to the next one is what you should be aiming for. You still need to make sure you are getting your cardio in, which is the bulk of your workout. Mansour recommends you go outside for a run, swim or bike ride. A total of 20 to 60 minutes will be more than sufficient for the day. Health ministries recommend 20 minutes a day of moderate exercise. For athletes who enjoy all these activities, a combination of the above is also an option. A couple of beneficial stretches to do before or after the workouts are the twisting lunge and the leg kick out. First start with a full body warm-up by moving in place and shaking out the tension and stiffness in your muscles.

The twisting lunge is a standard lunge, where the athlete begins by stepping one foot forward, and dropping the upper body down forcing both knees to bend. Then simply turn the upper body to one side, hold the position, return to the standard lunge, and then back to standing pose. The leg kick out begins with knees and hands on the floor in an on-all-fours starting position. Take one leg off the ground, lift it and extend out and away behind the glutes. Repeat. That’s it! Your workout is done. Whether you decide to do only these or add them to your existing workout (bravo you!) they should help you stay fit and healthy.

IN MY CHOOS FEATURING DAISY EDGAR-JONES Jimmy Choo unveils spectacular Autumn Winter 2020 Campaign By bazaar staff

We’ve been longtime fans of Jimmy Choo’s IN MY CHOOS content series. Celebrating women who dare to stand out, the campaign’s personalized approach brings the household name closer to the hearts of fans worldwide, and their latest Autumn Winter campaign featuring British starlet Daisy Edgar-Jones is no different. Creative Director Sandra Choi elaborated on the brand’s latest muse for the season, “Daisy is a modern heroine in the making, she represents the archetypal Jimmy Choo muse for a new era, her talent combined with her humility lend her a unique allure and confidence. She has found herself on the cusp of global stardom during an extraordinary moment in history. I, like many others, was mesmerized by her performance in Normal People and am so thrilled we were able to work together to create such a beautiful campaign that talks to the brand’s London roots so strongly.” Daisy captured the hearts of fans with her breakthrough performance in the acclaimed TV Drama Normal People, which quickly soared to fame given the prolonged period of global lockdowns and people immediately tuning in and becoming hooked. Wherever we were, Daisy was right there with us. Her overnight success playing the lead role of Marianne charmed audiences across the world, making Daisy one of the most talked-about talents in the industry. Staying true to the IN MY CHOOS content spirit, Jimmy Choo’s Autumn Winter campaign features Daisy as the main muse of the season, utilizing striking images to tell her story, all of which are brought to life with a video interview and short film vignettes. Previous IN MY CHOOS collaborations have featured Kate Moss, and Timberland, amongst many other iconic brands and personalities. The entire campaign was shot by the talented London-based American photographer Dan Martensen, who intuitively captures Edgar-Jones’ confident and alluring spirit. With a maturity that belies her years, Daisy effortlessly moves between playful, glamorous, and beguiling, capturing the very essence of the Jimmy Choo woman and giving 60

an insight into the girl everyone wants to know more about. The stunning visuals were captured at London’s landmark destination hotel Chiltern Firehouse, where we see Martensen’s mastery come to life as his assertive images celebrate modern luxury juxtaposed against the elevated bohemia of London’s Bloomsbury. The campaign video was also captured using a 16mm Bolex camera, lending an intimate reportage finish to complete Daisy’s IN MY CHOOS story. Commenting on this special collaboration, Daisy said, “I am so delighted to be working with Jimmy Choo on this campaign. This is the first time I have worked on a commercial shoot, and it was a completely new and exciting experience for me. I loved finding a character through the shoes and accessories, it reinforced to me how transformative accessories, especially shoes, can be when playing a role – I also love how the collection includes off duty styles as well as glamorous heels.” A style icon in her own right, Daisy perfectly embodies everything IN MY CHOOS is about, as her golden rule for dressing up is simply not having one. Her style is constantly evolving, and she makes sure she has fun with whatever she is wearing. She recognizes the transformational power of shoes and accessories, and with Jimmy Choo’s Autumn Winter collection, any look can be dressed up or down with the stunning array of choices available for you to choose from.

UNDERRATED FOOD DESTINATIONS There are so many diamonds in the rough By bazaar staff

Kuwait’s culinary landscape is rich and diverse especially when you compare it to the country’s size and population. Food is definitely our collective love language and we’re spoilt for choice. There is always a new concept opening up that gets all the hype. And even though we’re always first in line, we all know of a hole in the wall shawarma place, a burger place that makes the most underrated dessert, or an oft-forgotten bakery that we love. This month bazaar staff are sharing some of our local faves. Name: Farah Barakat (Mixed Media Content) Under-appreciated restaurant: Shawarma Shuwaikh Why: I discovered it when a few friends of mine ordered their shawarmas (which are bomb btw) however, true to my nature I was craving something sweet so I ordered the Mary Cake off the menu. And let me tell you, it did not disappoint! I think that’s all I order from there anymore. It reminds me of lazy cake, but creamier. Name: Jennifer Cádiz (Mixed Media Content) Under-appreciated restaurant: Kalha Why: This has got to be one of the most affordable concepts. There have been times when I’ve been living on one delicious and filling superfalafel sandwich a day; bread, falafel, tahini, tomatoes, 62

chips, aubergine, mint. It has everything. It was a shock when it went up from 250 fils to 300fils, but in the scheme of things that’s pretty good and when finances are tight at the end of the month you can still get a box of falafel for 100fils! Stuffed falafel is the treat for when you’re feeling flush with cash at 2 for 200fils. Packed with flavor covered in sesame seeds, sumac and stuffed with sauteed red onions. Nom nom nom. Name: Umika Pidaparthy (Online Producer) Under-appreciated restaurant: Vasantha Bhavan in Mahboula Why: There are many Indian restaurants in Kuwait, but if you are looking to go beyond the naans and paneer and try authentic South Indian vegetarian cuisine, then Vasantha Bhavan is a good place to start! This tiny restaurant houses no more than six tables but is quite clean. A group of us decided to visit one rainy Saturday morning after numerous recommendations and we immediately devoured the crispy vadas, fluffy steamed idlis and piping hot filter coffee! I love the Ghee Roast dosa and their flavorful lunch thalis are perfect for those looking to have a big meal. Vasantha Bhavan is much smaller than established places like Saravana Bhavan and Sangeetha in Salmiya, but is definitely worth a visit! Name: Yasmine El Charif (Content Manager) Under-appreciated restaurant: Pattaya Beach Restaurant Why: While Kuwait has lots of delicious Thai cuisine offerings, Pattaya Beach is by far the

most authentic and in my humble opinion, the most delicious. I’ve been going to the original location in Kuwait City ever since I was a kid! My mom’s office is located in the same complex, so I vividly remember the tourism posters of Thailand decorating the space, the very simplistic seating, the family operated dynamic that’s always fun to observe to this day, and by far the tastiest green or red curry you could ask for. While so many places can compete on the curry offering, their Pad Thai wins on flavor every single time. I also love their signature clams in spicy chilli sauce. They’ve got a cozy, but much more upscale location in Salmiya right next to Al Fanar mall, but I still love visiting the older location in Kuwait city. Name: Yasmin Gamal (Mixed Media Content) Under-appreciated restaurant: I have no idea what this place is called, but it is the only kiosk in Souq Salmiya that makes Egyptian Zalabya. Why: Call them zalabya, donut holes or loukoumades, these little fried dough ball babies are the perfect dessert. They’re warm, carby, sweet, crispy golden on the outside and fluffy on the inside. You can enjoy them by the sea in the summer and they will warm you up in the winter. Toppings can vary from powdered sugar, cinnamon sugar and even nutella, but I am a purist and I like mine with syrup. And this little booth will serve them fresh, hot and oh-so delicious.

BRACE YOURSELVES, WINTER IS COMING!

MY

Testing … one, two, three…Seems like my fingers still know their way around a keyboard. It’s been a long break from writing, one that I did not want to take nor was I planning on taking anytime soon. But hey… who am I to question the major terrible hand that was handed to us on a global scale, especially when the rant takes off from my inability to practice my hobby of writing when people are facing a life altering event. The chaos ensued by Covfefe (I cannot believe no one coined this meme yet, especially POTUS) was, is and will continue to be the quickest hard left earthlings have ever taken. What is even more baffling to me, is that the mini ‘chaos’s’ it created in each and every household: Homeschooling, distant working, lost routines, financial distress, relocation issues, inability to travel home etc. Those and many more, are events of ginormous proportions each on their own, let alone when they are handed to us in bulk. And even though, I genuinely wanted to write a happy fun comedy piece and find the silver lining in this pandemical season, it seems disingenuous to side-step the biggest bill we all yet have to pay when it becomes due soon.

64

With that thought lingering in my mind, I seem to be unable to find that silver lining… well, maybe the one true positive thing I can say is that we are all now cooler on the account that we all elbowbump instead of shake hands. Apart from that, this pandemic mostly changed nothing for me: I always never sleep, I have no kids to homeschool or send to school, I mostly work from home, I hate to be hugged or kissed and I’ve been through harder financial times. Maybe the one thing it took away from me is travel, but that’s okay. I find solace in knowing that no one else is doing it too. Selfish but also imperative to my sentiment that I am treated equally like literally everyone else except diplomats. Small bills we pay daily. The pandemic is still amongst us, despite what your auntie sends on the family WhatsApp group. And while we like to pretend that businesses and life are back to normal for our own sanity, the truth is we are still functioning with an underlining catastrophe. When the vaccine will be distributed and the virus’s punch will lose its momentum, that’s when the general population of the third rock from the sun will truly be able to go back to their old familiar normal. And once all the channels of living will cast away their limitations, that’s when the deficit will begin to avail itself. Remember, we are still sheltered, we’re still paying small bills. This is the most Schrödinger-ish Black

Swan event to ever exist: A Black Swan event in actuarial sciences is when an event builds up unaccounted for until it overflows and devastates its host. We are aware of the huge bill due soon but we are acting as if it is never due, which gives it that extra zhuzh (editor’s note: We didn’t realize that juj is spelled as zhuzh) of fitting under Schrödinger’s theory of two contradicting events coexisting simultaneously. That doesn’t mean it’s the end of the world. It never is. It’s just one huge leap into the unknown we will all be forced to make soon, some will overcome immediately, others will not. But what I am definitely certain of: We will all overcome eventually. Work harder and humble yourselves, but most importantly” Brace yourselves… it’s coming.

MONSIEUR DAKAR BACK TO WINNING WAYS AT BAJA POLAND

Get all the details on multi-stage challenge in Poland By bazaar staff

Stéphane Peterhansel (FRA) wasted no time in reminding Europe’s offroaders that he’s still the man to beat on his return to competitive racing at Baja Poland. He took control of the contest before the midway point and the 13-time Dakar Rally winner went on to claim the chequered flag behind the wheel of his MINI John Cooper Works Rally.

Peterhansel quickly answered any questions about how he would cope with eight months away from racing and how he would adapt to having a new co-driver. It was soon evident that Monsieur Dakar still had plenty of speed and the pace notes of Edouard Boulanger (FRA) had the duo on the path to success. “Getting a win in our first rally together is a great start. This has been one of the most difficult rallies I have ever competed in. We are used to desert conditions, and here we struggled with water and mud,” said Stéphane Peterhansel. Following 444 kilometers of timed racing spread over seven special stages, the final winning margin of French pair Peterhansel and Boulanger stood at over 12 minutes. They were able to celebrate on Sunday thanks in large part to staying out of trouble on the previous day when torrential rain had seen a number of their rivals fall away as track conditions worsened. Clogged filters and the threat of engine failure forced Nasser Al-Attiyah (QAT) and co-driver

80

Mathieu Baumel (FRA) to retire during the third special stage. Stage three also saw the chances of Kuba przygoński (POL) winning his home race suffer a blow as he lost a wheel and spent over 40 minutes on repairs. “I was very surprised that we finished the third stage in first place, especially since I wasn’t pushing hard. I saw the crews stopping. We didn’t have it easy either due to problems with the car.” said Stéphane Peterhansel. With three-time Dakar winner Al-Attiyah out of the race and przygoński left to target stage wins, Peterhansel used all his experience to bring home the victory. Attiyah stated, “It is very disappointing to retire from an event like this, but I was glad to be at Baja Poland after I stayed at home for eight months. Our goal was to win but it was not possible on this occasion.” The reigning FIA World Cup for Cross-Country Rallies champion can now turn his attention to next month’s Rally of Andalusia as preparations continue ahead of the 2021 Dakar in Saudi Arabia.

Groceries delivered in less than 30 minutes? Yes please. By bazaar staff

Let’s rewind to 2019. Think about the glory days: being able to go outside with no mask, being able to greet friends with a handshake or a hug, being able to shop at the grocery store without worrying. Then 2020 happened! 2020 has changed how we live. Thankfully, talabat mart pioneered 30-minute grocery delivery in 2019!

This year saw transformation on how we live every aspect of our lives – including the way we shop and eat. E-commerce and delivery have become king. Talabat has made the decision to be pioneers at 30-minute grocery delivery, taking the experience to the next level. Having chosen Kuwait as the regional launch of talabat mart, we can now continue to order our groceries and have them safely delivered right to our doorstep in under 30 minutes. Everything a family needs Families can now order their daily needs ranging from water, soft drinks, fresh produce, health food, snacks, child care items, ice creams, baking goods, as well as non-food household items, such as tissues and detergents online on the app. In fact, insights from talabat mart show that during the pandemic, there has been a demand for fresh, immunity boosting foods. Baking has also been a popular activity, with an increase in the consumption of butter, margarine and cocoa powder. Safety as top priority The brand keeps safety as its top priority, in line with all the safety guidelines announced

by the Kuwaiti government. FALLING FOR H&M STUDIO

“THE REFINED REBEL” COLLECTION BREAKS ALL THE RULES By bazaar staff

If there’s one thing we can probably all agree on about this seemingly interminable 2020 is how unconventional and unpredictable our experiences have been throughout. And now, the H&M Studio collection for AW20 closes the year flying in the face of homogeneous everyonedress-this-way rules. Aptly titled “The Refined Rebel” this collection features tailoring that uses vibrantly unexpected color, fluid bespoke prints which are inspired by enduring Italian marble, and pieces that can allow you to confidently bring the party to the office, because, savor every day.

Ann-Sofie Johansson, Creative Advisor at H&M

84

“The AW20 Studio collection muse is not afraid to challenge the status quo. This collection is for those that celebrate being oneself above all else. We hope our customers feel inspired to dress with a carefree, rebellious attitude,” says Ann-Sofie Johansson, Creative Advisor at H&M. bazaar had the pleasure of chatting more to Ann-Sofie, and she explained a little about the inspiration for the collection and the ideas expressed within. With social and physical distancing, and with a universal realization that time is fleeting, do you think that this collection will encourage evening wear as daywear, androgyny and more outrageous self-expression? How does this collection embody that? Absolutely, we created this collection with the hopes that customers will feel inspired to bring the decadence of evening wear into the day. Why not wear our sheer dress over jeans? Or our shimmering blazer to the office or Zoom call? Many pieces in this collection are completely adaptable for any time of day, for any wearer, for any occasion. We’re really proud that this collection offers something for all forms of self-expression.

empathizes with art when the piece triggers memories and associations. Which piece from the Studio collection evokes the clearest memory when looking back on working on this collection, and why? The collection’s beautiful statement marble-print dress really reminds me of the design team’s research trip to Florence. Its bold print brings back memories of our tours of the terrazzo, while the colors and deep-V neckline mirror the brilliant showmanship and style of the Florentine locals. We loved people-watching! Thinking of how Paget had spent so much time in the city and creating that connection in our designs was really meaningful for the whole team too. I’m reminded of that when I look at the piece.

Wearing uber glam statement jewelry pieces can elicit the same joy as when raiding the family jewelry box as a child. Especially when worn in an unconventional way. How did you decide on the pieces you wanted to create and the elements to use on them? We knew we wanted this collection’s jewelry to make a statement. The teardrop shape of the earrings and broach is a subtle nod to a slightly more heritage Nineteenth Century writer Violet Paget – style and we loved the almost vintage feel that the pen name Vernon Lee – said that the viewer shape gives too. Both pieces were created in bright,

eye-catching crystal so that they can dress-up or personalize any piece from the collection. Leather is a bold choice to make. Can you tell us more about why leather was right for this collection? Leather in this case really embodies the collection’s inspirations. Thinking of the richness and luxuriousness of palatial Italy, using such a tactile fabric as leather was key in capturing that decadence. Likewise, it best captures one of the collection’s inspirations, David Bowie and the glamrock rebellious energy of the 70s. How does the philosophy of H&M Studio inspire you in your conceptualization of a collection aesthetically and with the use of textiles? H&M Studio is a hub of fashion-forward thinking, the team and I are continuously striving to create contemporary, approachable and dynamic pieces that last the test of time. The story of a collection plays a huge role in the aesthetic choices as well as the fabrications. For this collection, we wanted to portray the fearless attitudes and androgynous style of David Bowie and Violet Paget, so we created tailored silhouettes, used colors that evoke 70s disco and punk and used rich Italian wools and leathers. It all stems from the team’s

85

storytelling. Additionally, one of the main goals of H&M is sustainability and in keeping with this, the AW20 collection has some key conscious pieces in recycled polyester and organic cotton. How does this collection speak to H&M’s global fanbase? The H&M customer is conscious, contemporary and loves to explore their own personal style. Our AW20 collection was inspired by similar ideals with this season’s muse challenging the norm and showing their attitude through their style. There’s so much experimentation and celebration to be had with this collection, I hope our global fanbase love it as much as we do. Certainly there are H&M Studio “muses”; Barbie Ferreira, Veronika Heilbrunner, Celeste, Alton Mason, Young Emperors and Mia Kong, who have all been having lots of fun with this collection. These fashion bloggers, creatives and influencers, are cocreating the campaign from where they are across all four corners of the globe, travel limitations having been in place. They have organically utilized the collection, putting together the pieces their own way, totally uniquely, and are posting the results. “In keeping with H&M’s strive for innovation, the H&M Studio team experimented with an exciting new campaign format for AW20. Adapted for today’s climate, this new way of working gives our global 86

cast the creative freedom to style, photograph, and express themselves in the comfort of their own space. We hope the new collection and campaign encourages everyone to celebrate their style,” says Kattis Bahrke, Head of Creative Marketing and Communications at H&M. The Refined Rebel even has its own exclusive social media filter, so you can get involved at home! You’re invited to share your

own personal styling of the collection, just as the muses are. Giphy stickers should inspire playful customization too! Happy styling and posting, remembering to tag H&M! The Refined Rebel collection is available on kw.hm.com from September 24th. Follow @HM on Instagram for the latest updates.

&OTHER STORIES TELLS A FALL FASHION TALE

ROMANTIC PARIS, GLAM LA AND MINIMALIST STOCKHOLM By bazaar staff

The beauty of & Other Stories is that their collections come from distinctive design ateliers in three different fashion cities. Whether you prefer the romanticism of Paris, the glamor of LA, the Scandi chic of Stockholm or a mix of all three, this collection offers a new narrative on our favorite season. The tightly edited collections are full of timeless treasure pieces that you will live in your wardrobe forever.

90

Paris: Nostalgic romance The Paris atelier is the birthplace of billowy cloud-like blouses and dresses. Perfect attire for visiting museums or having a stroll by the Seine. Delicate embroidery, wide-collars, frills, ruffles and bewitching floral prints just add more romanticism to an already dreamy collection. The silhouettes are floaty and easy to wear without compromising on style. Los Angeles: Sophisticated glam The design team in the Los Angeles atelier looked back to the 80’s for inspiration. Specifically, they zoomed in on the elements that defined the decade and gave them a much more modern twist. Hourglass silhouettes, sharp shoulders and cinched waists will flatter without overwhelming any figure. They chose a much softer palette of neutrals that are so much more wearable than the bold colors of the 80s. Stockholm: Neo minimalism The capital of Sweden is known for being the birthplace of Scandi chic. Black, classic, easy to wear and very cozy without looking messy is how we would describe the style. In this collection the Stockholm atelier presents a lineup of sharply cut pieces inspired by men’s tailoring and the result is a simplified, straight-forward and enveloped in black look. Chic and effortless for every season. Shop & Other Stories’ in Grand Avenue – The Avenues, or visit https://stskw.czone.alshaya.com/en. RUTH BADER GINSBURG CHANGED MY LIFE FOREVER

But her fight isn’t over By Katica Roy

Something happened in the summer of 1993 that would have a profound impact on my life 18 years later. Ruth Bader Ginsburg was nominated and confirmed to the Supreme Court of the United States. Her legacy is not only one of social justice, it is one of economic inclusion.

On May 29, 2007, Justice Ginsberg wrote the dissenting opinion in a landmark wage case, Ledbetter v. Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company. The central question in the case was the statute of limitations for wage disputes under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. In her dissenting opinion, Justice Ginsberg stated that Lilly Ledbetter “may have little reason even to suspect discrimination until a pattern develops incrementally and she ultimately becomes aware of the disparity.” Justice Ginsburg’s argument became the basis for the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act passed by Congress in 2009, which incidentally became the first piece of legislation President Obama signed into law. It was this law that I used to fight for pay equity after returning from maternity leave two years later. When I discovered a pay discrepancy, I conducted research and found the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act which changed the statute of limitations for equal pay. That’s when I called the HR manager and said, “This is a Lilly Ledbetter issue. Every time you pay me the statute of limitations starts over. What do you want to do about it?” To its credit, my employer increased my job level, increased my pay, and gave me back pay. Justice Ginsburg’s nomination to the court and that dissenting opinion paved the way to ensure

92

that I would be paid equitably and that my children would have equitable opportunities regardless of the fact that their mother is the breadwinner. Justice Ginsburg’s lived experience (and her willingness to use it) changed my life forever. The share of breadwinning moms in the U.S. has increased by 166% since 1970. And, breadwinner moms have the largest pay gap of any cohort of women in the labor force: 66 cents on the dollar . If we closed the gender pay gap, we could add $512 billion to the U.S. economy and close the Social Security Savings gap by a third. Since 1970 the U.S. economy has grown by $2 trillion because of women’s increased labor force participation. Justice Ginsburg also wrote the dissenting opinion for another landmark case, Shelby County v. Holder. The central question in the case was whether or not the coverage formula in Section 4(b) of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 was still constitutional. This is the law that Representative John Lewis almost gave his life for. The court concluded that it wasn’t. It previously gave covered jurisdictions the green light to change voting laws, with no federal pre-clearance necessary. Electoral degradation ensued. Between 2014 and 2016, more than 17 million people were purged from voter rolls. And compared to the period between 2006 and

2008, the number of names purged from the rolls between 2014 and 2016 increased by 33%. In her dissenting opinion, Justice Ginsburg stated that when the Court struck down Section 4(b) it, “terminate[d] the remedy that proved to be best suited to block that discrimination.” The icons in our lives do not exist simply so we can lean on them for hope. They exist so that we might see what is possible for us and so that we can give hope to others, and not give up the fight. I am a breadwinner mom who fought to be paid equitably twice and won thanks to Justice Ginsburg. Now with 43 days until the most consequential election of our lifetimes, we must vote. Our entire system of justice is built on it. Let Justice Ginsburg’s inspiration call us forward to action and bravery and remember the words of another champion of social justice we lost this year, Representative John Lewis: “The vote is the most powerful nonviolent change agent you have in a democratic society.” In a time of COVID-19, the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression, and renewed calls for racial justice, Justice Ginsburg’s legacy matters not only for the preservation of our democracy but also for the future of our economy. There is a $2 trillion opportunity waiting for us on the other side of inclusion.

LEXUS TAKES YOU TO THE FUTURE WITH THE LF-30 A NEW VISION OF THE FUTURE OF ELECTRIFICATION By bazaar staff

We know that electric cars are the future, for so many reasons. Lexus have been pushing all kinds of barriers in their continued efforts to deliver innovative and amazing experiences. And when they unveiled the “Lexus Electrified” vision for an upcoming generation of electrified vehicles, we were wowed to say the least. Headlining this moment was the debut of the Lexus LF-30 Electrified Concept.

94

Since the brand’s creation in 1989, Lexus has endeavored to deliver to its customers innovative and amazing product and brand experiences that stimulate the five senses. Since the launch of the RX 400h in 2005, Lexus has led the world as a pioneer in electrification technologies such as the two-stage reduction gear and the multi-stage hybrid system which leverage technology to offer excellent performance and the direct driving sensation characteristic of Lexus Hybrid vehicles. The “Lexus Electrified” vision targets a fundamental leap in vehicle performance, handling, control and driver enjoyment even as mobility within our society continues to change with autonomous driving and vehicle electrification. Evoking the original fun of driving, Lexus is developing new advanced posture control and other electrification technologies to further evolve driving pleasure, and to fundamentally transform the essence of luxury vehicles of the future. Towards this end, Lexus is drawing on the lessons learned developing the core technologies found in Lexus’ popular range of gasoline-electric hybrids, including battery management, power control modules, and electric motors. In particular, the technology of Lexus Electrified enables integrated control of powertrain, steering, suspension, and brakes, realizing the ultimate potential of the motor control technology cultivated in HV. With this technology, we can control the driving force to provide ideal vehicle posture according to each driving situation. Lexus endeavors to continue providing enjoyable and safer driving vehicles. [Continued...]

By 2025, Lexus will have available electrified versions of all Lexus vehicle models and are aiming for the sales of electrified vehicle models to outpace those of conventional internal combustion engine vehicle models.’LF-30 Electrified’ new concept embodies the vision of Lexus’ electrification. A glass roof above the rear seats features voice control and a gesture controlled “SkyGate” display window that uses Augmented Reality (AR) to display various types of information, such as a realistic star-filled sky, user-favorite videos, and even navigation. With in-wheel electric motors, steering by wire, and Lexus Advanced Posture Control, the LF-30 can offer a dynamic experience unlike any currently available. Lexus Advanced Posture Control technology regulates the drive-power output from hightorque electric motors to adjust vehicle posture in tune with human sensibilities. Completely independent control of front and rear drive wheels allows appropriate provision of frontwheel drive, rear-wheel drive, and all-wheel drive, depending on the driving situation. Compact and lightweight drive-power units expand freedom in vehicle packaging and are used to enable the driver to enjoy ideal driving, regardless of the road surface or driving conditions. The steer-by-wire system eliminates a mechanical connection to allow more flexible turning control depending on driving conditions, and a more precise steering feel aligned with

the driver’s intention. It also contributes to a greater sense of openness by allowing the steering controller to be shifted forward and out of the way during autonomous driving. Onboard AI distinguishes the voices of vehicle occupants, and uses personalized information stored on the driver’s control key to serve as a partner. It facilitates the adjustment of elements of the interior environment, such as air temperature and audio, and the setting of navigation routes and destinations, while also making proposals for activities after arrival. It also understands driver’s preferences and helps them control the suspension and powertrain settings in real-time according to the driving scene. The LF-30 Electrified also carries the ‘Lexus Airporter’ drone-technology support vehicle. Using autonomous control, the Lexus Airporter is capable of such tasks as independently transporting baggage from a household doorstep to the vehicle’s luggage area. Based on the latest autonomous driving

technology concept of ‘Lexus Teammate’, the LF30 Electrified features advanced driving support functions in the form of a Chauffeur mode and a Guardian mode. Occupants can enjoy both comfort and peace of mind during autonomous driving with advanced posture control technology being employed. Furthermore, a self-parking function and a front-door pickup function in which the LF-30 Electrified autonomously moves from driveway to doorstep provide an especially high level of convenience.

MEAL PREPPING

A gift for your future self By bazaar staff

I usually want to chill during the weekend. After a long and sometimes stressful week, the last thing I want to do is chores or not fun stuff. But it turns out that a little planning and a couple of hours of work on Saturday can make the rest of your week easier, healthier and cheaper. If you have never heard of meal prepping then you and I don’t access the same Pinterest boards or follow the same Instagram accounts because for some people this is an actual lifestyle. You can find advice from busy moms, “do you even lift” bros and broke millennials. Personally I just think of it as a smart life simplifying hack. Instead of cooking every day, preppers will cook large batches of food, pack them in individual serving containers and stock their fridge and freezer. You can prep breakfast, lunch, dinner or any combination of these. You can even prep snack bags or boxes. It is a huge timesaver because for some magical reason cooking one meal or seven usually takes the same amount of time. There’s also a money saving element involved, because you are less likely to order take

100

out if your lunch is already taken care of. And it can be cheaper to buy in bulk compared to buying smaller amounts of your fresh ingredients. How you actually do it will vary depending on your dietary and lifestyle needs. If your end goal is to eat more protein rich lunches at the office before you hit the gym then you will probably be oven baking a lot of chicken. If your goal is to feed a hungry family of four at home, without needing to cook every day then your focus will be on finding good casseroles or dishes that freeze well. Regardless of what you will be prepping, you do need to plan ahead properly. Give me the right checklist and I might be able to conquer the world. Shopping I prefer buying my fresh produce the day before I do the bulk of the cooking. It is less exhausting and I have enough time to rethink my strategy if I wasn’t able to find all of the ingredients I needed. I also make sure that I have all the spices, herbs and tools I might need. Cooking I have a small dry-erase board mounted in my kitchen where I will list the tasks I need to take care of in order. Because my kitchen is small and I don’t have a sous chef, I need to be as organized and efficient as possible. For example if I am planning to make meatballs and grilled chicken. I might start with marinating the chicken, making

the meatball mix, putting the chicken in the oven, making the meatballs and finally once the chicken is done adding the meatballs to the oven. Before you start a task make sure that all of your ingredients and tools are laid out and accessible, and once you are done wash the dishes and tidy up. Think of it as micro Mise-en-place which will help you strategize better and save time without getting overwhelmed. Storing the goodies Properly packing the cooked meals can make or break this whole thing. If your food goes bad or ends up tasting stale then the whole endeavour is a failure. Airtight containers will keep everything fresh and tasting great. I prefer single portion sized boxes that easily stack on top of each other. You can also label the meals with a dry erase marker, don’t forget to add the date too. Enjoy! All you have to do now is to remember to grab your lunch on your way out. If your commute is long or you don’t have a fridge at the office, invest in an insulated bag to keep your meals fresh. Bon appetit!

LEARN TO CREATE LAUGHS

This class—developed by Stanford lecturers and comedians from SNL and the Onion—will help you bring humor into the workplace By Lauren Steele

Workplaces around the world have changed in 2020 in ways that we never anticipated, leaving many colleagues struggling to form virtual bonds with one another and develop camaraderie over Zoom, even as they deal with the emotional toil of this doozy of a year. That’s why the online learning platform edX has created a special professional program that’s designed to energize teams, create more resilient workforces, and bring joy to the virtual workplace— by infusing it with humor. The program, called Remotely Humorous, consists of three skills-building courses created by a pair of lecturers from Stanford’s Graduate School of Business: Naomi Bagdonas, a media and strategy consultant who moonlights as a stand-up comic, and Connor Diemand-Yauman, the co-CEO of Merit America, a nonprofit that offers professional skills training to people without college degrees. Bagdonas and Diemand-Yauman took the bones of their Stanford class, which explores the importance of workplace humor through a behavioral science lens, and revamped it by collaborating with writers from renowned comedy institutions like The Onion and Saturday Night Live. The result is a highly entertaining series of video lectures and assessments that walk students through the importance of bringing laughter into the workplace—and the right ways to deploy it. “Naomi and I have this shared belief that humor is one of the most powerful tools we have,” Diemand-Yauman says. “It can make teams more bonded and effective, and help leaders be more authentic and trustworthy. And it’s especially relevant now.” The shift to remote work, he points out, have left many people feeling particularly isolated and lonely. And during tumultuous times, he says, “we need humor more than ever…. It reveals our humanity, defuses tension, and bonds us in ways that wouldn’t be otherwise possible.” Remotely Humorous may be lighthearted, but it’s grounded in science. The curriculum is based on research that demonstrates how humor improves both work life and professional growth. A series of studies conducted by researchers from Wharton and Harvard, for example, have found that using humor in the workplace can make someone seem 104

more competent and confident. It can even help them land a job. (A survey of executives conducted by Hodge-Cronin & Associates found that 98% preferred employees with a sense of humor.) A ground-breaking study by psychologist Alice M. Isen found that humor aids people in creative problem solving, in part because laughing makes us more relaxed; when we are in fight or flight mode, we can’t access higher order thinking. Bagdonas and Diemand-Yauman structured their program in a traditional way, with videos and assessments that are packed with research and evidence-based recommendations. But there’s a twist. “Unlike most other online courses, it’s heavily based on activities,” Bagdonas says. “So you can take it with your team and do the activities together. It’s almost like an intensive culture boot camp—just with slightly fewer trust falls.” (Because all classes on edX are self-paced, you can register on edX and begin taking Remotely Humorous any time you want.) The lectures themselves, meanwhile, showcase office humor done right. “We had such a blast filming the lectures, which are really more like part lecture, part sketch comedy,” Diemand-Yauman says. “And we didn’t shy away from sharing the joy of creating this project with our learners: each lecture includes some of our favorite bloopers from each take.” The first course in the program focuses on reigniting your sense of humor at work and learning

comedy techniques from the pros. It also goes deep into the neuroscience of humor. The second course is about understanding the cultural enablers of humor in an organization and the conditions that foster an environment where joy comes more easily, and how you can create those conditions. The third and final course focuses on making a fundamental shift in your teams and organizations to get humor to stick. According to Bagdonas, that involves “leveraging… the legends that have been told and retold about your organization over the years, the rituals that define your work culture today (even the most seemingly ridiculous), and the daily offers [signals that you’re open to humor] that colleagues make to one another,” Bagdonas says. In creating the course, Bagdonas and DiemandYauman committed themselves to living out its values. “Having fun—while creating a product we really believe in—was a crucial part of the process,” Bagdonas says. “And it was also a litmus test to ask, ‘Are we practicing what we’re teaching? Is it working?’ These are questions we were constantly asking ourselves.” At a time when levity may seem hard to come by, Remotely Humorous not only gives learners permission to laugh and have fun, but also helps us understand how important that is. OFFICE PALS

How to make friends with coworkers when everyone’s working from home By Stephanie Vozza

Love them or hate them, your coworkers have a big influence over how much you like your job. While they may have less impact when you’re working at home, since you’re not necessarily affected by somebody fun or annoying sitting next to you, work relationships still matter, says Shasta Nelson , author of The Business of Friendship: Making the Most of Our Relationships Where We Spend Most of Our Time . “Research shows what you’re doing all day and who you’re doing it with impacts your wellbeing and happiness at work,” she says. “Work is where you make one of your biggest contributions to the world and where you spend most of your time. You’ll feel better doing those things if you feel seen and supported by work colleagues.” When you’re remote, though, you can’t just walk to the kitchen and see others like you could do in an office break room, says Nelson. “You also can’t go into a video conference call and have a side conversation with a coworker or walk back to your desk while talking to a peer,” she says. “Those spontaneous conversations that proximity allows can’t happen, and you have to acknowledge that. Building relationships with coworkers when everyone is working from home requires more effort.” Make a Plan While Nelson says it’s not a perfect metaphor, bonding with coworkers when you’re working remotely is like sending kids to school versus homeschooling them. “We know homeschool kids need their social needs met, and parents have to be intentional about it,” she says. “When it comes to working from home,we can still build social networks, but we need to be more intentional about it.” Instead of the relying on the luxury of organic connections, find ways to make them happen. “A lot of us have been focused on being in pandemic mode, and we put forming relationships on hiatus,” says Nelson. “It’s important to get back to what’s really important because now we’re seeing trends arise around burnout and loneliness. We may have gotten through the feeling of crisis, but the pandemic dragging on is exhausting and this is where relationships really matter.” You can’t go all this time without fostering friendships and eventually return to the workplace feeling connected, says Nelson. Whether you plan on going back to the office or not, you need to have a plan for strengthening relationships. 108

“Put a Post-it Note near your desk and name a couple people that are important to you, either to build a relationship with or stay connected to,” says Nelson. “Then commit to building a bridge or maintaining a relationship.” Find Ways to Connect Schedule time to talk to the people on your list, or take advantage of opportunities that do arise during the day. If you’re already interacting with someone in some form, for example, look for ways to extend it, such as asking to stay on a call 10 minutes after you’ve finished discussing business. Invite a coworker to a virtual lunch, or start a virtual book or podcast club. Or kick off meetings by asking a sharing question, such as “What are your weekend plans?” or “What have you discovered about yourself during the pandemic?” Learning more about your colleagues helps you find ways to connect later. It may feel uncomfortable at first, admits Nelson, but that’s the case with doing anything new. “Set the expectation that it will feel awkward,” she says. “And that’s okay. It doesn’t not need to feel forced. We force ourselves to go to the gym or to go to bed because we know on the other end of it is something positive. This can be the same.” Broaden Your Network The upside to working virtually is that you can broaden your circle beyond what would naturally happen in an office on a daily basis. If you’ve

always wanted to build a relationship with someone in another department, take advantage of the fact that everyone is working remotely to reach out and suggest a call or video meeting. “Use the pandemic as an excuse,” says Nelson. “You can say, ‘I’m feeling a little isolated now and thought I’d set up a few calls to hear others’ experiences.’ Explain why you’re doing something different and model the behavior for others.” Make it Consistent and Positive To make it stick, it must become a habit, says Nelson. “You could meet the first Thursday of every month, for example,” she says. “What you put in place needs to be a routine so you can maximize your time interacting and minimize the time it takes for scheduling. You’re at higher odds of having something stick if it’s consistent and not a one-off time.” Everyone is stressed and creating a positive emotion for others can help cement connections. “Your job description during a call or video conference is to leave that person feeling better about themselves and their work,” says Nelson. “That will make them want to interact with you some more. Consistency is important because it helps replace what’s missing from work, but the second most important factor is leaving the person feeling better for having spent time with you.”

IS 6 FEET ENOUGH?

Here’s what else to consider By Marie McCullough

Philadelphia, New Jersey, New Mexico, and more than a few cities and states in between are allowing restaurants to resume indoor dining at 25% capacity, with tables at least six feet apart.

What’s the scientific basis for these safeguards? “Not a clue,” emailed James Garrow, spokesperson for the Philadelphia Department of Public Health. “Could be an arbitrary level intended to severely limit capacity.” Actually, these pandemic precautions are not so much arbitrary as oversimplified, too rigid, and outdated, British infectious disease experts warn in a paper published last week in BMJ. “We propose graded recommendations that better reflect the multiple factors that combine to determine risk,” wrote the researchers, led by Nicholas R. Jones at the University of Oxford. Those factors include room occupancy levels, exposure time, face masks, ventilation, viral shedding, whether people are breathing normally or coughing and sneezing, and whether they are silent, speaking, shouting, or singing. 112

For example, singing, coughing, and sneezing generate warm, moist, high-momentum gas clouds filled with droplets that move faster than typical ventilation flows, the researchers wrote. Studies suggest these droplets can travel up to eight meters (about 26 feet) “within a few seconds.” Staying six feet apart (two meters) is a simple rule of thumb now stuck in the public mind _ and on store floors with tape or decals. But the rationale for this distance goes back to 19th century studies of how far visible droplets traveled from a person after coughing, sneezing, or talking. Since large droplets fell close to the person emitting them, this “reinforced and further entrenched the assumed scientific basis” of the six-foot rule, the researchers wrote. As for reducing restaurant occupancy to 25%, that may not be enough to reduce risk in poorly

ventilated spaces where people have removed masks to eat. “The key parameters are distancing and ventilation, and whether these can be achieved adequately at 25% occupancy will depend very much on the nature of the space,” said Charles Haas, a professor of environmental engineering at Drexel University. “Other than saying that 25% is better than 50%, which is better than 100%, the reasoning to me is far from transparent.” Alas, like every aspect of the pandemic, scientific reasoning is limited and evolving. “Further work is needed to develop specific solutions” for various indoor environments, the researchers concluded. “Physical distancing should be seen as only one part of a wider public health approach.” Photo by Michael Dziedzic on Unsplash.

MORE DRIVING POWER WITH PORSCHE Porsche 718 flagship models now available with automatic transmission By bazaar staff

The Porsche 718 Spyder as well as the 718 Cayman GT4 models can now be ordered with the seven-speed Porsche dual-clutch transmission (PDK). The automatic transmission is now available for all drivers who want to enjoy no interruptions in acceleration during gear changes and better acceleration values. Compared with the 718 models featuring a manual transmission, the 420 PS (309 kW) GT models – the 718 Spyder and 718 Cayman GT4 – now accelerate from 0-100 km/h half a second faster, in 3.9 seconds. They reach the 200 km/h mark in 13.4 seconds (0.4 seconds faster). The PDK versions of the 718 Spyder and 718 Cayman GT4 benefit from the enhancements made to their mechanical locking rear differential: in traction and overrun modes, this achieves locking values of 30 and 37 per cent as compared with 22 and 27 per cent with the manual transmission. 118

This has a positive effect on the longitudinal and lateral dynamics as well as traction, and increases driving pleasure. In the 718 GTS 4.0 models, the standard Sport Chrono package adapts the gear shift characteristics of the PDK according to the four different driving modes (Normal, Sport, Sport Plus and Individual). In Sport mode, it operates with faster gear changes, shifts down earlier with automatic throttle blips, and supports optimal acceleration with later shift points. The even more athletic Sport Plus

mode is tailored for maximum performance and fully exploits the rpm reserves of the naturally aspirated six-cylinder boxer engine. Launch Control is also integrated within Sport Plus, which activates an automatic race start. The Sport Response button in the center of the mode switch allows the driver to activate maximum engine and transmission performance for 20 seconds, irrespective of the current driving mode. This motorsport-inspired function helps with spontaneous overtaking maneuvers. In the flagship 718 Spyder and 718 Cayman GT4

models, the driving mode has a characteristic that’s typical of the GT variants: it can be programmed for maximum performance using the PDK Sport button. An automatic selector lever, which echoes the design in the 911 GT3, underlines the emotionally charged GT experience. The seventh gear of the PDK has a shorter ratio in all 718 four-liter naturally aspirated engine derivatives. Enhanced equipment in the new Porsche model year The Porsche 718 family will start the 2021 model year with a host of new features. High-quality

Race-Tex material will replace the Alcantara fabric. The new material is based on the covers used for racing seats. It has a highly breathable structure and offers greater support. The vivid special paint finish Python Green will be added to the color range of the GT models 718 Cayman GT4 and 718 Spyder. The 718 Spyder will also be available with the 20-inch wheels in Aurum – this was previously only available for the 718 Cayman GT4. There will also be the option to equip the roadster with similarly-sized, conventional summer tires instead of the standard ultra-high-performance tires.

The 718 Spyder as well as the 718 Cayman GT4 models with automatic transmission can be ordered from today. Information on the basic retail price, model specifications and local availability can be obtained at Porsche Centre Kuwait.

OCTOBER SLEEVES

It’s Breast Cancer Awareness month so we are celebrating women in music…and – here’s some role reversal - including one token male artist. Male breast cancer is a rare medical condition, accounting for only about 1% of all breast cancers and varies from 100 to 70 times less common than in women, race dependent. Race also plays a part in late and therefore worse prognosis for a number of socio-economic and systemic reasons, and diagnosis for people of color with breast cancer tends to have a worse outlook, particularly for men. In Kuwait the numbers of cancers– in order of frequency: breast, colorectum, thyroid, prostate, and Non-Hodgkin lymphoma, are increasing due to lifestyle and habits, such as dietary, physical activity and obesity. While it is said that there is a need in Kuwait for interventional prevention programs that vigorously involve diet, anti-smoking and physical activity among both sexes, why not take charge of yourself, now, and start dancing to these toe-tapping tunes released in October.

ALBUM RELEASES

SHAMIR

MELANIE C

ALBUM NO. 8

Shamir Album - October 2 The 26 years old singer, songwriter and actor from Las Vegas is prolific in output, self-releasing this, his seventh studio album since 2015, and second album of 2020. The non-binary artist - comfortable using male pronouns - is described as having an androgynous voice on his brand of introspective indie rock. Shamir has been compared to Prince and a teenage Michael Jackson. Radio.com wrote that Shamir’s singing voice, “like Joplin’s, stops you in your tracks.” He does not mind having his voice described as androgynous but notes that “countertenor” is the correct term: “It’s not feminine, it’s not masculine. It’s a happy medium ... I feel like if the world was more like that, our problems would be gone.”

Melanie C Album – October 2 This former Spice Girl has co-written 11 UK Number 1s, more than any other female artist in chart history. The eponymous album’s lead single “Who I Am” performance was live streamed on James Corden’s The Late Late Show from Chisholm’s home due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The album was finished remotely for the same reason. Chisholm told BBC Music: “Obviously, I’m making a pop-dance record and I’m a mature artist, so I have to accept that some radio stations are not going to be playing me anymore. That’s something to overcome. But I want people to enjoy this album, I want people to dance to it, I want people to be empowered by it. And when coronavirus has done one, I want to get out there and perform it live.”

Katie Melua Album – October 16 Originally from Tbilisi, Georgia, Melua is one of Britain’s most successful musical artists, with over 56 platinum awards. Her voice carries extraordinary qualities of clarity, emotional depth, and richness of tone that have been her trademarks since she released her debut album at 19 years old. This return features a gloriously cinematic exploration of love, with lyrics written by Katie Melua, and production by Leo Abrahams. This is a true tour-deforce of artistic and lyrical maturity, and songcraft at its finest, with Melua’s faultless performance completely inhabiting the album, and the musical presentation and arrangements expertly executed by Abrahams, co-composer Sam Dixon, and mixers Cameron Craig and Luke Potashnick.

SONGS FROM THE KITCHEN DISCO

IS THIS HEARTBREAK

RECOVERY SONGS

Sophie Ellis-Bextor October 23 Sophie Ellis-Bextor’s new album ‘Songs From The Kitchen Disco’ is a collection of the songs that soundtracked her pandemic experience. During the height of lockdown, one of the most genuinely entertaining popstar-at-home moments was Sophie’s Friday night ‘Kitchen Discos’. These were hilarious, often chaotic, singalongs with kids and family joining in the fun. The album will feature all of Sophie’s biggest and best-known disco hits in one place for the first time ever including a new recording of Spiller’s ‘Groovejet (If This Ain’t Love)’, featuring Ellis-Bextor. The album will include 6 Top 10 hits, including “Murder On The Dancefloor” and “Take Me Home”, plus a brand new single.

Sarah Dooley October 23 This is the second album from the Brooklyn-based musician, singer, songwriter and comedian who describes the work best herself: “Each track on the album looks at heartbreak from a different angle, studies it in all its forms, big and small. One song is about throwing a party so that a specific person will attend but then he leaves early. In another, I’m the heartbreaker…It’s such a risky thing we do as humans - trust other humans with our messiest, most fragile parts of ourselves, all the while knowing it may end in devastation. But we do it again and again; we keep taking that leap. Because it’s worth it. Right?” Dooley muses. “Either that or we’re all huge morons. But I secretly think it’s worth it. Anyway, buy my album.”

Kat Hamilton October 30 Kat Hamilton is a singer, songwriter and performer based in Los Angeles. Hamilton cleverly crafts an intimate blend of rock, pop, Americana and emo, establishing an entirely new genre. Hamilton’s career has the trajectory of a chameleon; lending her talents to pop-punk, emo, R&B, hip-hop, pop and country. She is no stranger to reinventing herself. In 2017, Hamilton ended her five-year run as the front woman of popular east-coast pop punkers, Manic Pixi, before shifting her focus to her upcoming solo, nine-track album. Hamilton confides, “I was really lost, I had just gotten out of a recovery center and these songs became my way of coping…the music was inspired by being knocked down and getting back up.”

BETTER THAN THE NEW NORMAL ROUTINE

LIVE, WORK, PLAY AND REST AT HOME WITH IKEA AT THE LOWEST PRICES EVER By bazaar staff

Keep your mementos on the KVICKSUND memo board to remind yourself of happy moments

Stay organized with the TJENA boxes

Summer vacation has ended, school has started and we can start to see normalcy starting to creep back into our lives. Yet, things are vastly different. The kids are still at home and we’re working from our living rooms and home offices instead. In our old lives, the line that divided work or school and home was clear and physical. This has meant that work has been creeping into our down time and the kids are sometimes having trouble getting into the right mood for school in the morning. For this year’s back to school and college season, IKEA's interior design team curated a selection of IKEA products and solutions that fit perfectly into any student or professional's life – no matter what their living space is like. And with Even Lower Prices, there's something for every budget. 122

Explore your creativity like a professional artist. Choose your canvas or add MÅLA drawing paper. The easel folds flat and is easy to move to your favorite view

Even though the circumstances that forced us into this situation are dire, there is a lot to be gained from this global social experiment and if you tweak your home and routine slightly, you will find the transition can be a lot easier than you think. Routines and rituals are a very powerful tool. By switching your morning routine, you can signal to your brain that your work/school day is starting. IKEA boasts a huge selection of mugs, cups and coffee making tools that will have you caffeinated and ready for the day. Enjoying freshly brewed coffee at the start of our day really puts us in the right mood for conquering the day. Since you are at home you can avoid mindless eating by prepping healthy snacks the night before. Glass jars are perfect for overnight oats or baby carrots. Older students and kids can fill their own jars and create their favorite flavor combinations. It helps get them more excited about healthy mid-day lunches and they will always have an energizing snack ready for them. Your space greatly influences how you feel. We find that flowers are instant mood-boosters. Grab a bouquet and add it into the GRADVIS vase for a pop of color and the beautiful scent of fresh flowers. The way we manage our time has really changed. School students used to just follow the bell, now they have to know when to click on their online class link. If you need some extra help, then go old-school and get an alarm clock for your desk. Learning the value of time and being able to self-monitor is a priceless gift for your kids. Even adults can benefit from watching the clock. Working in 20-minute chunks and taking a couple of minutes break to stretch and move around will keep your brain and body healthier. Keeping your space organized will spare you the mental energy behind looking for things. Using a box to keep all the items, tools, stationery that you need in one place will really help you stay on top of things. This works for students too. We love the colorful TJENA collection of boxes and file holders. Get one for each family member so everyone can keep their class or work related items together. You can also stow them away easily at the end of the day which will make the transition to fun-time smooth and easy. If you don’t have a dedicated workspace, the KLIPSK bed tray can help you transform even the smallest of spaces into your very own desk. The foldable legs make the tray easy to store without taking up extra space. You can stand your tablet or book securely in the groove and you can easily charge your tablet as the bed tray has a hole for the cable. Move from room to room easily with the RÅSKOG trolley. Keep your class supplies organized and mobile. The IKEA design team also showed us the SKÅDIS Pegboard combination, a perfect way to get organized and keep smaller items close at hand anywhere in the home. End your workday by stepping into the kitchen to prep a wonderful healthy dinner for everyone. The time saved from your commute can now be used for making colorful, filling and delicious meals.

AFreeCOMPACT LIFE WITH MUJI up space for the things that truly matter By bazaar staff

Clutter is never a good thing. Whether you listen to scientists or the little voice in your head that sounds like your mom telling you to tidy up your room, you know that a messy environment is not doing you any favors. Don’t believe us? Several recent scientific studies have shown direct links between disorganized living and working spaces and higher levels of stress and lower self-esteem. Despite knowing this, it can still be challenging to declutter. Where do we even start? MUJI has a simple four stage process for achieving a more compact life. It is not about minimalism or just getting rid of your stuff indiscriminately, instead it is about being selective and smart about the things you do own and how you store them. STAGE 1: Think about your possessions The trick here is to categorize your belongings into what is necessary and not. Are you holding on to old clothes that don’t fit or are so dated that they belong in a museum? Do you have your old report cards from kindergarten? These are unnecessary items that neither add to your life nor have any function. Keep only what is truly necessary and get rid of the rest. Sort Put everything out where you can see it. Things that are functional and still needed go into the necessary pile. Things that have no real use but are important to you like gifts, souvenirs or keepsakes can go into your “Happy” pile. Finally, things that have no real value or function should go into your “Bye Bye” pile. Keep only what you need or what excites you. Evaluate Some things might have nothing but sentimental value. Instead of keeping them in your drawers, move them online instead. take pictures of old documents, keepsakes and mementos so you can let them go. STAGE 2: Think about the shape of your storage Now that you have gotten rid of things and know what you want to keep, it is time to think how to put them away so that it serves you. Planning your storage solutions in a way that fits your life and space will transform your home from cluttered and messy to efficient and beautiful. Layout You should already have everything out in your three piles from the last stage. Put all of the items in your “Bye Bye” pile in bags and boxes and put them near the door or in your car so you can either throw them away or donate them. Look at the other two piles.

126

MUJI's Tip: You might want to consider displaying your special items instead of hiding them away. They are meant to bring you joy, after all. MUJI’s acrylic boxes and organizers are perfect for these. They’re also perfect for things like jewelry and makeup where seeing your items easily will help you remember to wear and enjoy them. Stay flexible Choosing storage that allows for change in size and use can make it so much easier when your collections grow or shrink. MUJI’s Tip: The Polypropylene Storage Drawers (PP drawers) are a perfect example. They stack easily on each other and come in several different widths and heights. You can add more when you need to, or pack them away flat when you don’t. Organize Eliminate the mess, fix the imbalance, andstop the disorganization by making sure that items that go together live together. Keep items tidy in drawers by using the smaller propylene trays. Consider adding the velour divider in your acrylic drawers for your dainty jewelry. Not only will it protect your precious items, it will also keep them organized and make it easier for you to find what you are looking for.

STAGE 3: Think about how to store items Think about how to store items Consider how items are used when storing them. Similar items like pens, notebooks and staplers should all be kept in the same location. If you mostly use these items in your living room then they should be stored there. MUJI’s Tip: The Rattan Boxes are great for storage but are also beautiful decor pieces that can blend in with almost every interior aesthetic. Arrange Things like stationery are easy to categorize and keep together, other items might be trickier. It might be easier to think of when and where you use items. For example, all seasonal clothing can be put away together regardless of their type, since they will all need to be packed and taken out at the same time. MUJI’s Tip: Documents and paperwork should be stored properly in the file boxes so that you can always find your birth certificate or contracts when you need them. Store Frequently used items need to be easily accessible, while items that aren’t can be put away under the bed or higher up on shelves. MUJI’s Tip: Label your containers and boxes if within are items that you don’t want to store in

an acrylic box. We often forget what is in a box if we haven’t opened it for a few weeks. It is easier to just label them instead of having to open and check every single one. STAGE 4: Think about enriching your life Think about enriching your life We own things because they are necessary or bring us joy, or at least these should be the reasons. If the clutter is stressing you out, then it is time for these items to go. When you consider buying something new, you should keep in mind how and where you are going to find space for it in your life and in your home. Compact Life An efficient and simple life is a stress-free one which you can plan for by using efficient design, highly versatile products and a little thinking. The more organized your space is, the more organized your day will be for the things you really enjoy doing. MUJI’s Tip: It will take time and energy to sort everything out, but the future savings in time, space and energy will make up for it. Visit the MUJI store in Phase 2 and Grand Avenue – The Avenues. As we’ve all learned from Jeffery and Bill, there’s nothing you can’t ask a masseuse to do, but if you do want to do-it-yourself at 183 KD a pop it’s much less than the price of the massages we’re used to getting on Little Saint James. The PRO has an ergonomic body you can grip from all sorts of angles, a swiveling head, six attachments for different parts of the body, a long battery life, and durable mechanics that will last well into the future. Depends on who’s future, if that’s considered a benefit or not.

If you unzip this backpack in just the right way you can picture the screams of the crocodile it’s made of. Artistically speaking, the large panels of crocodilian skin required to create a top-quality backpack means having to use the skin of more mature animals, as younger crocs may not be large enough to have enough skin for a seamless pattern. Luxuo.com states, “Furthermore, what compounds the difficulty in getting these high-grade crocodile skins is that crocodiles are aggressive animals.” Well, if you knew you were being made into a backpack that could be owned by any ragamuffin street urchin at 24,178 KD wouldn’t you be miffed too?

[Where else but] California-based Living Vehicle provides a trailer for off-grid living that starts at a mere 113,237 KD. What you want most when living untraceably - hiding from the feds anyone? – is to be able to fire up your electric car so you can hot foot it to hot yoga. The PRO can Level 2 rapid EV charge your additional vehicle from an impressive 16,000 watts storage. Now that gender reveal parties are burning up the planet along with climate change there may not be many places left for you to park your trailer. So, now your kids are home due to COVID-19 instead of a college admissions scandal, park it and them on your estate grounds and claim social distancing.

Avocado’s cost only 383 KD when you use them to line your baby’s crib. This is nothing compared to the investment of giving the continuation of your family name in diapers a sustainably handmade mattress with GOTS-certified cotton and wool, GOLScertified latex, and coco fiber, so there are no harmful chemicals or endocrine-disrupting off-gassing. “And then there’s the brilliant two-sided design: One side is firmer to give newborns the support they need. The other side is a little plusher, for tossing and turning toddlers." It’s possible they mean toddlers which toss and turn but for parents who send their kids to boarding pre-school, who knows.

Virgil Abloh and Gorden Wagener are trying premium deconstruction – Yeezy anyone? – and this is the perfect time now that the plandemic has made sheeple even more open to manipulation, including this collab. “The objective is to push the boundaries of each respective creative realm, fashion and art and automotive, and rebuild the luxury landscape anew. They’ve managed to turn the G-Class into a hand-sanded – do you know how much metallic paint jobs are these days, futuristic - as in 1960’s future, stripped down – no fancy furnishings, utility vehicle – if that utility is ego. It’s no surprise their supercouple name is Virden. Thanks, Urban Dictionary.

Better Books

2020 marks a decade in existence for this first-rate second hand bookstore in Salmiya’s block 10, single handedly set up by the single-minded Maxine, who thankfully now has a few helpers on the Better Books team and a loyal following. Over time the bookstore has hosted many children’s activities encouraging younger people to engage with and enjoy books. This pet-friendly space comes with its own white cat named Frosty who wanders around the shelves or lounges languorously on the sofas, and a bird - curious Kiki who sets reading challenges for kids, and will perch on your shoulder if you are considered favorable enough. There’s even a piano in Better Books, and so much enjoyment is to be had here that they have to remind followers, “We sell books too!” There are two dozen genre sections that run the gamut of fiction to non-fiction and pouring over the titles to choose something to buy is more than half the fun. Previously purchased books are bought back at 50%, or you can trade for credit, and the store takes book donations to keep the shelves stocked and the doors open. Prices start from 100 fils but some books have also been given away for free! Follow @betterbookskuwait on Facebook to keep up to date. Source: uncrate.com, goop.com, luxuo.com. 128

EXPRESS EYECARE APPOINTMENTS THE NEW VISION EXPRESS WEBSITE MAKES BOOKING YOUR APPOINTMENTS SIMPLER AND EASIER By bazaar staff

Our sight is perhaps our most dominant sense, taking up 30 percent of the neurons in our brain compared to 8 percent for touch and only 3 for hearing. What we see defines how we think of the world. We make split second decisions based on the input coming from our eyes without ever really thinking about it. Many of which can be life-altering like stopping at a traffic light or falling in love. Taking care of your eyesight is not a luxury, it is a basic necessity and Vision Express just made that process much easier with the launch of their new website.

132

You should always visit an optometrist right away if your vision gets blurry or you can’t see clearly. But you should also get regular checkups to make sure that your eyes are healthy or get your glasses prescription updated. We have always loved popping into a Vision Express store to get checked for free and to purchase our contacts, glasses and sunnies all in one visit. Now, with social distancing measures and some restrictions on the number of customers in a store you can book your appointment on line on the Vision Express website at visionexpress.me. First, you need to select the branch you want to visit. The website lists all the available stores and their locations on a map. If you have enabled location services on your device, the site will automatically highlight the branches nearest to you. Just select the one you prefer from the list and the website takes you to the next step. There are three possible choices; eye exam, contact lens fitting and both an eye exam and fitting in the same appointment. We especially appreciate that the time needed for each service is clearly stated, making it easier for you to manage your time and expectations. After making a selection you will be shown the schedule. Click on a date and a drop down list will show you all the available time slots. Once you have chosen a date and time, the website asks for your contact information. Make sure to choose the correct country code. Vision express

offers this fantastic service all over the Middle East region. Check the confirmation screen that everything is in order. You can easily click back if you decide you want to change the time or type of service. If everything is in order, click Book It and you will be taken to the confirmation screen. You should also receive a text notification on your phone confirming your appointment. You’re now ready to get your eyes checked. All of the optometrists at Vision Express are fully qualified healthcare professionals. They are university graduates who also completed a full year of supervised training before being able to register for practice. Not only are they licensed to examine your eyes and detect any visual difficulties or other eye health concerns, they are also very friendly and welcoming. Being able to pick out your prescription for contacts or new glasses from the store right after completing the examination just makes life so much easier, because we’re all about that efficient life. For more information and booking visit the website visionexpress.me or call the customer service hotline on 1821 212. You can shop online in Kuwait at kw.visionexpress.me or uae.visionexpress.me in the UAE. Follow @visionexpress_me on Instagram and Facebook: Vision Express Middle East for information and inspiration for your new eyewear looks. 133

ARMONI LAUNCHER

GROUPME

BIBINO BABY MONITOR

WALLAME

QUACK QUACK PRO

PAPRIKA

Armoni Launcher is a fairly faithful replica of the iOS 14 launcher and includes support for iOS style widgets along with home screen setups and docks. Some other features include simulate 3D Touch, a widget auto-resizer to turn almost any widget into an iOS widget, and the usual stuff like dark mode and icon pack support. The launcher actually looks pretty decent and it’s a fun way to dress up your Android phone to look like an iOS phone.

This app lets you turn a spare phone into a fully functional baby monitor. Simply install the app on the spare device and your own and then pair them through the app. The second device acts as a video monitor while your primary phone receives the data. It supports both mobile data and WiFi so you can check even when you’re not home. The app includes a Night Light function for seeing in the dark and twoway audio support so you can sing to your child even when you’re not there.

We don’t think we can really pretend we’re fine after suggesting this app, but we’re ok with that. We just love the sound of quacking ducks. If you are a fan too, or have always dreamed of starting your own duck band, this is the app for you. Click as many ducks as you can in this app, the sounds will go quack. The new Quack Quack app has only one job and that is to entertain us with different duck sounds and it absolutely does every single time.

For those who find themselves participating in a ton of group chats, GroupMe makes it easier to keep track of them all. Add people simply with just their phone number, and they can begin chatting without even needing to download the app. You can name your groups, set avatars, and also save your photos and videos within group chats to refer back to later. There’s a desktop version, so you can keep on chatting without getting your phone out of your pocket.

WallaMe is a free iOS and Android app that allows users to hide and share messages in the real world using augmented reality. Users can take a picture of a surface around them and write, draw and add stickers and photos on them. You can leave the message anywhere, and they’re only visible to your friends, though you can search for other hidden messages using a map interface. Perfect for friends who want to stay connected but still socially distancing.

The internet is basically the best cookbook ever made, with recipes for whatever dish, dessert, or drink you want to create just a click away. Paprika lets you paste in links for those recipes, pulls out the crucial information (ingredients, directions, servings) from the sometimes endless stories and histories that food blogs insist on including, and saves the info in your own digital cookbook to pull up whenever you need it.

ASHA’S BY THE BEACH

Enjoying Indian cuisine at the new waterfront restaurant By bazaar staff

Every country boasts its own unique cuisine, but Indian culinary tradition is truly distinctive in its feisty flavors and rich tasting dishes. The subcontinent with its wide assortment of soil, climate, culture and long history of trade gave birth to a food environment that is unrivaled the world over. The land provided spices, herbs, fresh vegetables and fruit and the people used them to create warm, spicy and soul-filling meals. The long history between Kuwait and India via trade routes has meant that Indian cuisine is not new or shocking to our palates, instead it almost feels like a distant cousin or an extension of what we already know and love. Our first goto destination when we’re having butter chicken dal or biryani is always Asha’s. The restaurant’s namesake is Asha Bhosle. A renowned Indian musician, product of India’s first family of music and turned culinary genius. The restaurant joins traditional North Western Indian homestyle cooking with new age fusion.

136

After months of Covid-19 caused restrictions we were excited about our visit to the new waterfront Asha’s. Located next to the Kuwait Towers and with a view second to none, we were ready to indulge in a rich lunch. What we weren’t expecting was how beautiful the interiors were going to be. The huge floor to ceiling windows let in the beautiful natural light, giving the space a warm glow while the Arabian Sea glitters in the background. Rich maroon seats and booths complement white marble tables and welcome you into the

space. The attention to detail in the interiors is obvious; from the gold-rimmed white porcelain flatware to the gold wire napkin rings and the beautiful brass chandeliers. Subtlety and understated elegance is the name of the game. We visited mid-week, just before lunch hour and it was already packed. On our table sat a sign that told us it had just been sanitized and another that showed us a QR code which we scanned to get to the menu. In seconds we were perusing all the wonderful dishes we could order and enjoy.

The complimentary fried papadums arrived at our table just after we sat down. We had three choices of dipping sauces; Sweet papaya pickles, Tamarind chutney and a Mint chutney. We tried to pace ourselves because we knew what was coming next. We started with Asha’s sharing platter which includes a selection of most loved appetizers on the menu. We loved the Aloo Matar Kittikki potato cutlets stuffed with mashed green peas and served with tangy chickpeas. The Jheenga Naar crunchy crispy prawns with honey chilli aioli sauce was the king of tangy kicks. The platter also included Tandoori Chicken Tikka and two types of samosas. It felt like we were warming up for the real race that was right around the corner. One of our favorite things about Indian cuisine is how colorful it is. The reds are rich, the browns are deep and the greens are so lush. It is like experiencing nature on a table. The aromas and textures just add another layer of complexity and delight. If you are a fan of chicken then you have to order the Murg Malai Kebab. Delectable boneless chicken breast marinated in a creamy cheese and cashew nut paste and a touch of cardamom that is grilled to perfection in the tandoor oven. Whether you are vegetarian or just want something warm that reminds you of home, then the Chef’s Special Dal Makhani is just what you need. Classic black lentils are slow-cooked overnight with tomatoes, cream and butter. It doesn’t matter where you are from, but this dish tastes like home, hugs and happiness. The Butter Chicken at Asha’s doesn’t need an introduction, it is a fan-favorite for good reason. The chef told us that the secret to the flavor is the dried fenugreek leaves. Even non-lamb fans at the table loved the Pressure Cooker Mutton Curry, a classic homestyle lamb curry made extra tender and flavorful in a pressure cooker. This dish was definitely theatrical, with steam escaping from the pot as our waiter opened the lid. Seafood made an appearance too in the form of the Prawn Biryani - prawns, cooked with biryani rice flavored with cumin, cardamom and saffron. All of our dishes had one thing in common, balance. No flavor overpowers the other, and everything is layered together so delicately that you can taste, recognize and appreciate all the spice. We wiped our plates clean with a selection of breads, fresh from the oven. The Laccha Paratha - a layered buttery bread, Cheese Garlic Naan and a plain Garlic Naan. And we washed down our meal with a refreshing Strawberry Passion Mash and Lemon Mint. We were already feeling stuffed with all the good food but you just can’t leave a table without having dessert. Gulab Jamun is a very classic Indian dessert made from milk and cottage cheese dumplings soaked in syrup, served with

rabri, a creamy thickened milk. The texture is chewy but really soft and fluffy at the same time. It is one of those things you need to experience to really appreciate. The Kesar Pista Kulfi ice cream is made in-house from reduced milk, saffron and pistachio topped with fresh berries. It was cold and soothing after a really rich meal. After a good meal, one usually feels satisfied, but we also felt grateful. Thankful for the return of some normalcy to our lives and our ability to visit and enjoy restaurants again, something we hope to never take for granted again.

MATBAKH ELSETT YUSRIA

Authentic Egyptian food classics, delivered straight to your door By bazaar staff

Matbakh Yusria already had us at their motto, long before we tried this concept’s food. The famous Egyptian saying “‫ ”بكرة تروء و تحلى‬which roughly translates to “tomorrow will be better and sweeter” is so emblematic of everything we know and love about Egypt. Kind hearted humans, a deep rooted sense of hospitality, some of the best beaches in the world (we see you, Sa7el!), a rich historic cultural heritage, and of course, the food! We are so enamored by everything that Matbakh Yusria has to offer, but before we delve into the delicious options on their menu, let’s get to know the wonderful woman who makes it all possible, Elsett (lady) Yusria herself! For fans of the local culinary consultancy Prepline, it would be safe to assume that this concept will be a hit, because let’s face it, it’s hard not to fall in love with Egyptian food. But this project is just a teensy bit extra special and personal, as Elsett Yusria also happens to be Prepline founder Essa Behbehani’s mom. So, in combining her name with the arabic word for kitchen, matbakh, this authentic Egyptian concept was born. Currently, Matbakh Yusria solely exists as a catering and delivery only concept. Yusria was encouraged by her local community and peers to spread the love through food. Given how open Kuwait is to indulging in different food experiences, the good people at Prepline saw how people would fall in love with Yusria’s food whenever they tried it, and they wanted to share that with everyone in Kuwait. Born in Egypt in 1950, Yusria got married in the 70s and relocated to Kuwait to start a brand new life with her family. During that time, her culinary prowess grew with her constant kitchen experiments. She perfected Egyptian street food classics like Koshari and Hawawshi, and in addition to a few more specialties, it was time for Yusria’s famous dishes to make an appearance on Kuwait’s culinary landscape. Her food is all about bringing the true and authentic taste of Egypt to the comfort and warmth of your home-made fresh daily with lots of love. A quick glimpse on the dedicated Instagram account @matbakh.yusria does an amazing job of introducing this awesome lady, and we managed to pull her away from the kitchen for a few minutes to chat about the concept. Food plays a huge role in building a dialogue of inclusion and togetherness, and given the polarizing chatter that we have recently seen on our social feeds, we really feel that Matbakh Yusria is creating the space for positive dialogue that is uniting people for their love of Egyptian food. Yusria echoes this sentiment adding, “And what better way to spread love and peace than breaking bread? We’ve dedicated our Instagram account to communicate the magic and true essence of 138

Egypt, by highlighting its rich culture and history that inspires us each and every day.” We asked Yusria about the best-selling dishes coming out of her catering kitchen, and without a shadow of a doubt she immediately says, “The Kushari of course! Our Atayef are also incredible, and can be enjoyed year-round contrary to popular belief that they solely should be eaten during Ramadan.” For those of you who may not know the history of Kushari, it is Egypt’s most recognizable street food, with every Egyptian claiming that their local Kushari cart or shop is better than the next. Discover a daring combo of Middle Eastern, European and Indian flavors, as this dish is an amalgamation of lentils, elbow pasta, short-grain rice, vermicelli noodles and or chickpeas in some renditions, spicy tomato sauce, spiced Dukkah sauce and finished with crispy fried onions. Other go-to Egyptian classics that are as inspired by Egyptian street food like Kushari also include the Hawawshi, which is essentially a spiced, meat stuffed pitta that’s grilled to perfection and is served with Hummus. Yusria also delivers perhaps what is Egypt’s most prized dish, Molokheya, served with the thicker and starchier Egyptian short grain rice and vermicelli with

chicken. Not only is this special Molokheya (known as Jute’s mallow to the West) plant ultra nutritious, the authentic Egyptian preparation includes the insanely delicious combination of minced garlic and coriander fried up in ghee and then added to the steaming pot of the minced Molokheya leaves cooked in an animal broth. Yusria goes through all this effort to replicate the real deal experience of classic Egyptian dishes, and the result shows in each and every plate. Yusria has future plans to add more offerings, as the team is always looking for ways to innovate in the kitchen. They hope to introduce more of her signature dishes like Om Ali, Hamam mahshi (the Egyptian classic of stuffed pigeons) and maybe more mahashis (stuffed veggies like peppers, eggplant, and zucchini), and we can’t wait to try them!

Try the new iconic flavor of Tiramisu, the new Middle Easten-inspired Kunafa Ice-Cream Cake with Pistachio sauce and the trendiest flavor combination of Peanut Butter Ice-Cream cake with layer upon layer of luscious brownies. How could anyone forget about the clever locally inspired creation that is the Gers Ogaily skillet served with Häagen-Dazs’ specially infused Chai Haleeb (tea and milk) sauce? BURN IT DOWN: WOMEN WRITING ABOUT ANGER by Lilly Dancyger, Non fiction

THE ONCE AND FUTURE WITCHES by Alix E. Harrow, Fantasy

Women are angry, and from the #MeToo movement to the record number of women running for political office, they’re finally expressing it. But all rage isn’t created equal. Who gets to be angry? (If there’s now space for cis white women’s anger, what about black women?) How do women express their anger? And what will they do with it-individually and collectively? In Burn It Down, a diverse group of women authors explore their rage-from the personal to the systemic, the unacknowledged to the public. One woman describes her rage at her own body when she becomes ill with no explanation. Another writes of the anger she inherits from her father. One Pakistani American writes, “To openly express my anger would be too American,” and explains why.

CLOSER TO NOWHERE

by Ellen Hopkins, Contemporary Fiction

For the most part, Hannah’s life is just how she wants it. She has two supportive parents, she’s popular at school, and she’s been killing it at gymnastics. But when her cousin Cal moves in with her family, everything changes. Cal tells halftruths and tall tales, pranks Hannah constantly, and seems to be the reason her parents are fighting more and more. Nothing is how it used to be. She knows that Cal went through a lot after his mom died and she is trying to be patient, but most days Hannah just wishes Cal never moved in. For his part, Cal is trying his hardest to fit in, but not everyone is as appreciative of his unique sense of humor and storytelling gifts as he is. Humor and stories might be his defense mechanism, but if Cal doesn’t let his walls down soon, he might push away the very people who are trying their best to love him.

They bring the news that a sudden blackout has swept the city. But in this rural area - with the TV and internet now down, and no cell phone service - it’s hard to know what to believe. Should Amanda and Clay trust this couple - and vice versa? What happened back in New York? Is the vacation home, isolated from civilization, a truly safe place for their families? And are they safe from one another?

In 1893, there’s no such thing as witches. There used to be, in the wild, dark days before the burnings began, but now witching is nothing but tidy charms and nursery rhymes. If the modern woman wants any measure of power, she must find it at the ballot box. But when the Eastwood sisters - James Juniper, Agnes Amaranth, and Beatrice Belladonna - join the suffragists of New Salem, they begin to pursue the forgotten words and ways that might turn the women’s movement into the witch’s movement. Stalked by shadows and sickness, hunted by forces who will not suffer a witch to vote - and perhaps not even to live - the sisters will need to delve into the oldest magics, draw new alliances, and heal the bond between them if they want to survive.

Teenage master of Cuban cuisine, Lila Reyes, is eager to inherit her family’s Miami bakery along with her sister, Pilar. But between spring and graduation, Lila’s abuela dies, her best friend abandons her, and her long-time boyfriend dumps her. Fearing Lila’s emotional health, her parents defy her wishes and entrust her summer to family and their Winchester, England inn. Even though she’s given a space to cook at the inn, she longs for Miami, the seat of her Cuban roots. Before long, Lila can’t control the route of her own heart as she begins to fall for more than a new love. England has charmed her. And a special opportunity in London tempts her. As her return ticket looms, Lila feels impossibly caught between two flags.

THE DEAN & DELUCA WATERFRONT EXPERIENCE Brunch with a view doesn’t get better than this By bazaar staff

We have been waiting for the opportunity to have a brunch day and with everything slowly opening back up, we thought now would be the perfect time! The new Dean & Deluca Waterfront location was what we’ve had our eye on for a while, and so that’s what we chose! With a captivating exterior and stellar view, it’s a no-brainer choice for early birds or brunch lovers who like basking in the beautiful views of the gulf. Upon arrival, we walked into a gorgeous spot with high ceilings and fabulous finishing. The colors of the seating area, walls, floors and ceiling designs all complemented each other. They were easy on the eye and super inviting. We were fortunate enough to snag a table right by the glass overlooking the water and could not help but notice everyone else in the restaurant looking out at the view. The window spans the entirety of the wall making it the perfect morning view. We scanned the QR code available on the table to view the menu, and before we knew it the staff was ready for our orders. Before we placed our orders, we were welcomed with their infamous complimentary bread basket and butter to nibble on until our brunch selections arrived. For starters, we stuck to the ever so classic and delicious Poached Eggs on Avo Toast, which is layered with avocado, Hollandaise sauce and mixed seeds. There was a style-your-own eggs option on the menu called Eggs Your Style for those that prefer to customize. The Health Platter was both a heartbreaker aesthetically and satisfying for the taste buds. With three options on the platter being Granola, Cocoa Bircher Muesli and seasonal fruits, everybody dug in! Another sharing favorite was the Beetroot Moutabal which consists of smoked eggplant, beetroot, tahini, walnut and pomegranate seeds. For salads, they have a wide range of options, but we chose to order the Cobb Salad. The Cobb Salad was impeccable in presentation with romaine lettuce, avocado, cucumber, tomato, veal bacon, panko-crumbed egg and ranch dressing. Another order that was a fan favorite was the Grilled Octopus. Planted on top of labneh, pickled celery salad, lemon and paprika. The taste was surreal! If you’re planning a visit to D&D you want to try this. Known for their homemade dough and variety of flatbreads, they have plenty of options to choose from. From a basic Zaatar or Akkawi Fatayer to

146

Wild Mushrooms, Short Rib or a Goat Cheese and Sundried Tomato Flatbread. The options are limitless! The Goat Cheese and Sundried Tomato Flatbread was adored on the table, and it arrived topped with olives, molasses and caramelized onions which gave the perfect balance of sweet and savory! If you’re feeling a little bit hungrier than usual, or if this is your lunch meal, we recommend the Seafood Paella which is amazing for sharing. The saffron rice is delicately cooked, with calamari, shrimp, veal bacon, green peas and mussels. You will not be disappointed! If you’re not feeling seafood, then an order of the filet steak will make you content. Cooked the way you like it, we ordered it medium rare and it came to our table sizzling in perfection. With caramelized onion puree, anna potatoes, roasted vegetables, wholegrain mustard and mushroom sauce on the side of this dish, it is a great option to order. Another option for protein lovers is D&D’s Kilo of Shrimp. This kilo of shrimp comes with delicious saffron rice and peri-peri sauce served in a gorgeous blue skillet. To finish things on a sweet note, we headed to the D&D dessert display area and created our own Bakery Box. Looking at all their different options from croissants to brioches and cruffins we wished we could order one of everything. Who are we kidding! The Bakery Box allows you to do that. So, whether you’d like to see the display area for yourself or order from your own table, we recommend the Croissants, Taj pastry, Nutella Brioche, Vanilla raspberry croissant, and the Lemon Cruffin. Thank us later. For drinks, D&D offers stunning cocktails such as Tropicana, a mango, strawberry and banana layered drink, Merry Peary pear juice with citrus burst and rosemary syrup, and for the passionfruit lovers, a mixture of pineapple and passion fruit juice called Passion Pine. For the hot drink’s lovers, we recommend their signature drink the Caramel Brulee and the White Chocolate Latte, quite literally a little taste of heaven. Overall, our brunch experience at D&D has raised the bar so high that we might just make this a weekly thing. With stunning views and an inviting atmosphere, it’s a great place to catch up with your friends and loved ones after being quarantined away for so long. Follow Dean & Deluca on Instagram for updates @DeanDelucaME and Facebook: DeanDelucaME. Dean & Deluca is located in The Avenues, Murouj and Arabian Gulf Road- Bneid Al Gar.

HYDRATE FIRST

Making it easy to get enough water with Aqcua Eva By bazaar staff

People who spend time outdoors in the warmer months are constantly reminded by their bodies that they need to grab a drink of water. The rest of us, however, need some help. Spending more time indoors in climate controlled environments means that our bodies often don’t get the natural signals for hydration. Feeling thirsty indicates that you are already dehydrated but there are other signs, such as dark-colored urine, dizziness, fatigue, and dry skin. That means that your organs and internals just don’t have enough liquids to work as they should. Even if you are not sweating buckets because of the heat, your body is still releasing pressure water all day long. Respiration (breathing), perspiration, urination and other things are happening all the time inside your body. Other factors like age, activity level, diet and your

150

general wellbeing will also change how quickly or slowly you lose water. And constantly spending time indoors in air conditioned spaces and dry air does not help either. The bottom line is that dehydration is an easy trap, that you definitely don’t want to fall into, especially since it can seriously weaken your immune systems barriers. The mucus membranes in your lungs and sinus passages are your front-line defense against infection. If you aren’t getting enough water, these tend to dry up and become much less effective.

If you are trying to stay on top of your water drinking game, our friends at Aqcua Eva have given us some hot tips to help us out: Make a conscious decision Like everything else in life, if you don’t make an actual decision and commit to it, you probably won’t be seeing any positive results. Buy enough water to last you a couple of weeks and keep a bottle around you so you retrain yourself to just automatically reach for it when you feel thirsty.

Warm it up It seems like the default is to drink cold or room temperature water, but have you tried drinking warm water? Heat up the water and add a slice of lemon or fresh mint leaves for flavor and enjoy your caffeine and sugar free health boosting beverage. Routines work for you The easiest way to drink more water is to just make it part of your daily routine. Leave a bottle of water on your bedside table so you see it as soon as you wake up. Commit to drinking a glass of water before every meal, every two hours, or after brushing your teeth. Set a timer if you have to until it becomes a habit. Use Tech There are several water intake tracking apps that can help you stay on top of the amount of water you are drinking and to see if you need to glug down another glass or not. You can even incentivize it. If you hit your goal every day for a week reward yourself with a small gift. You can even recruit a friend to keep you accountable. Challenge each other to drink your water, the loser has to buy the winner a fancy water bottle. Staying hydrated really does affect your health and your wellness, so make sure that you are getting your daily requirement of 7-8 eight-ounce glasses a day. It is an effort that will be rewarded in the short and long term. You can find Acqua Eva in supermarkets, coops, restaurants and roomserviceq8.com.
