About the Cover: As part of bazaar studios’ latest work for H&M’s Autumn/Winter collection, we were asked to conceive a dreamscape for their latest collection, one that celebrates empowered bonds and a great return to the outdoors. In this special shoot, Gorpcore goes sartorial, and we fell in love with the talented eye of local photographer Fatma Ashkanani @fatmagraphique as she effortlessly snapped these gorgeous images, including our cover shot. As true believers in the power of collaboration, this work was brought to life by a talented band of creatives, including art director Farah Assaad (@Byfarahforeall) and her team, the beautiful models, hair and makeup experts, and the gracious people over at Studio Corners. Flip over to our shoot and check it out!

If you’re a parent with kids in school and you’re reading this, that means you actually survived the first few days of figuring out the logistics of how and when to drop off your kids and pick them up, while still managing to get to work on time, and sneak out in the middle of the day to go pick them up, and for that we salute you. If you’re child-free, and laughing at us poor parents, and our multiple dilemmas, well, don’t laugh too much, since the traffic jams affect everyone including you. Let’s hope that school buses are allowed back on the roads sooner than later, since that will help tremendously!

The bazaar team...

We started with the not-so-great news, but the better news is that the weather is finally giving us a break. There’s a lovely breeze in the mornings and afternoons, so dust off your running shoes and get your bike ready because this is the season for spending more time outdoors. Or you can explore the seas using an electric boat motor. This month we learned about ePropulsion Motors, a clean electric motor alternative that helps you protect the sea we love so much.

Operations Manager

We also met up with very interesting people like Burcu, who you have probably already seen on your TikTok For You Page. She told us how she became an overnight success and why she wanted to work at the Kuwaiti Cuisine restaurant Khaneen despite being Turkish. There’s no escaping TikTok mania, because our Truth or Dare candidate is another TikToker. Hamad Jaman, model, social media influencer and an extroverted introvert. From social media and art to the world of business, we spoke to Elisa Albendea, IKEA’s Marketing Director, to find out more about why she chose to relocate to Kuwait, her love of sailing and IKEA’s future plans.

Mixed Media Solutions

It seems that this month’s issue is full of success stories. The cold hard truth is that success is hard work and Hassan’s Optician Company is the perfect example. Kuwait’s favorite opticians are celebrating 70 years and we loved learning about their hero origin story. We want you to succeed too, so we reached out to our friends at X-cite to find out what you will need to start the new school year on the right foot. From laptops that will keep you productive to smart tools and gadgets that will help you stay efficient, we’ve got the ultimate list for you, including some fun stuff to help you wind down after a long day of studying. Fall means the real beginning of the fun fashion season. We’re ready to transition from flipflops and t-shirts to outfits that look dope, complete with maximalist outerwear and chunky boots. The H&M Autumn Collection couldn’t have arrived at a better time. Check out the stunning editorial photoshoot produced by bazaar Studios. We want to blame our cravings on the weather, but we’re always in the mood for delicious food. And Texas Roadhouse ribs always hit the spot for us. And we haven’t forgotten our vegetarian friends; The Four Seasons Hotel is offering a new plant-based menu that is inventive, novel and oh-so-yummy. We love eating out, but we’re also focusing on our at-home meals. Turns out that seafood is such an easy thing to add to our diets, especially after discovering Ocean’s Pride. This month we have some great recipe ideas that will have you loading up on omega-3 and lean protein.

LIFE AT HOME WITH IKEA

Marketing Director Elisa Albendea breaks down the meaning of home, her journey in Kuwait, and what the future holds By bazaar staff

Hailing from the southern province of Seville in Spain, Marketing Director at IKEA Elisa Albendea believes that her Andalusian roots have primed her well to take on a career in marketing. She’s a people person by nature and nurture, “I am part of a big family”, she starts us off, “Maybe that is why I love being with people, enjoying time with friends and family, and being outdoors. I am hyperactive and love both outdoor sports and food equally,” she laughingly continued. Upon relocating to Kuwait from London in 2010, she instantly felt at home, “The warmth of the people, the hospitality, the sunlight and the beautiful sea captured my heart. I thought to myself, I want to live here.” Elisa humbly regards her seasoned expertise (more than 25 years, to be exact) in the retail marketing industry as the result of “working with wonderful people that enjoy working hard and have passion for what they do. Why this love: First of all because whether it is colleagues, partners, or customers, retail gives you the opportunity to be permanently connected to people, and to the reality of your business. I am passionate about people, so I love marketing. Marketing is about understanding people and connecting with them.” Elisa has learned from every experience and every mistake, from walking the floors of the stores, chatting with customers and coworkers, and collating all of these experiences together. Even as her career grew and she found herself spending more time behind her desk, she would continue to visit the shop floor, dedicating more time for her colleagues to better understand their challenges and frustrations, and better connecting with customers. “If we have happy coworkers, we have happy customers and vice versa.” As longtime residents of this small but mighty pearl in the Gulf, stories like Elisa’s warm our hearts. Currently steering the comms ship as Marketing Director at IKEA, she has been with Al Homaizi Group for more than seven years but has lived in Kuwait for more than eleven years. As soon as she 26

Marketing Director at IKEA, Elisa Albendea landed at IKEA, she hit the ground running, working alongside her colleagues to launch IKEA in Jordan then Morocco. She utilized her natural instinct and passion for being with people to grow the right teams to further establish the brand in the three markets, “We moved into creating a regional Marketing team that could support what we wanted to do with the brand. We evolved into developing the brand to be closer and connect better with the consumers of each market.” Elisa explained. “Now, I feel that we have one of the best teams that I have seen in retail. People that love home furnishing with a passion for customer service and communication. I love every minute of my day because of the people I work with. Developing a better understanding of each market and consumers’ dreams, needs, and challenges is key to be able to connect with them and offer them an inspiring, relevant and unforgettable home furnishing experience. We aspire to have an emotional connection with the people of each country, so together we can create a better everyday life for them and their families. We want to touch the lives of not only consumers, but also coworkers, partners, and the communities around us. This is very well aligned with the purpose and the values of the Al Homaizi family, who have been nurturing the IKEA brand for many years in these countries and

making it one of the most trusted and respected brands in the market.” We’ve always been fans of IKEA; the Swedish brand has been a massive part of how we define and interact with our homes since childhood. As we grew up, so did IKEA, and we are privileged to have the time to speak with Elisa as she tells us more about how IKEA is planning to give back more to its valued customers and their goals for 2022. Currently, IKEA is engaging people all across the world with the IKEA Open Door Festival, which is bringing customers incredibly valuable offers, but more importantly, presenting them with virtual and in-store experiences that are spurring IKEA’s ‘Life at Home’ movement. From engaging activities for the little ones to cooking demos and everything in between, a visit to the IKEA store today will engage you with the brand like never before. This is such a transformative time for the company. IKEA’s next big thing is taking over the home space online. How is IKEA planning to do this via the “Life at Home movement”? In a time when life at home has never been so important, at IKEA we want to open the door to better living by throwing a festival that can now be experienced both online and in many IKEA stores around the world, featuring music, artists, chefs,

designers, and creators. This is a new kind of festival, with real people, set in everyday homes, studios, and neighborhoods worldwide, turning living rooms, kitchens, bedrooms, and backyards into virtual stages for performances and experiences. All in all, the IKEA Festival is taking place in over 100 homes in more than 50 markets across the world, and the experience is for free, open to everyone. And this is just the beginning! How is the concept of ‘home’ defined according to IKEA? How can IKEA help us make our living spaces more homely? For us at IKEA, the home is the most important place in the world. Home is family, safety, shelter, comfort, peace, fun, love and anything that makes you happy. But most importantly, home is different for each individual. We believe in a home that is primarily about how the space makes you feel – knowing it works for you, that it can change with you and that it feels like you. A home that supports your relationships, where you and your children can be happy, safe, and healthy, where you can share time and experiences with the ones that are the most important to you. A home that is part of a bigger whole, a neighborhood, a culture, a country, and our planet. We believe that a good home connects people and creates a sense of belonging as well as making room for life, activities, and memories. A good home allows people to be and express themselves, as it works for different situations in life, is versatile, and easily adaptable. A good home is easy-going and casual while at the same time it is practical, functional, beautiful, and of course durable. A good home is sustainable as well as safe and healthy for all ages while being based on needs and behaviors, not the rooms themselves. And not least, a good home is the home anyone can make real. At IKEA we help to create a better home by trying to understand all these different aspects of your home, to then be able to offer you relevant solutions that work for you. To make your home a home for all these different needs and all these different moments, all at affordable prices. Should customers expect to see changes coming to IKEA.com? Yes!! There is a lot going on when it comes to the IKEA website as we move forward from the catalog towards a true, integrated digital experience. This year we have added tabs for Homes and Rooms with a new format designed for “Home Inspiration seekers”. In these Rooms pages, we have the possibility to show what makes IKEA unique. Through inspiration and tips, we show visitors how to combine different products and useful tips and ideas to furnish their homes. For those who require a higher level of information, detail, and planning– we share our home furnishing knowledge to support them in making larger changes to their home. We can help them feel right at home, just a click away. The new structure of the website is actually inspired

Elisa has a deep passion for sailing, and enjoys trips out with the Kuwait Offshore Sailing Association.

Having fun with the IKEA team. [Continued...]

The IKEA Festival is ON with more than 1000 offers

by the ‘Needs & Dreams’ content that was basically in the catalog and is now integrated within IKEA. com to broaden the understanding of what home furnishing can do to help create better homes and thereby a better everyday life at home. We are really excited about the journey we started with the website, delivering more inspiration and a better experience every day. We heard that there’s an IKEA Home Book launching. Can you tell us more about this? Surprise surprise!! Stay tuned! What should customers expect from IKEA in 2022? 2020 and 2021 have been very challenging years for everyone, and we want to acknowledge that and continue to be by people’s side, and maybe even more than ever before. At IKEA we have the vision to create a better everyday life for everyone. Home is now more important than ever, and we believe that a better home helps to have a better life. This year we continue working to make this a reality every year. We have worked really hard this year to be able to reduce the prices of more pieces, so more and more people can afford to shop at IKEA every year. Accessibility is important, as is inspiration. With more inspiring solutions for everyone, solutions that are more affordable than ever, more ideas for all wallet sizes and tips will make life at home better and easier. We also have a few surprises. To make shopping at IKEA more and more convenient. Like new customer meeting points and new services are big surprises for the 28

coming year…. but let’s leave something on the sleeve. If not, it won’t be a surprise anymore. Let’s bring the conversation back to your life in Kuwait. What do you like the most about living here? It is amazing how similar Kuwaiti culture and values are to the Spanish ideals. I always say we have more similarities than differences. I love how open, welcoming, hospitable and generous the people of Kuwait are, of course, the Kuwaitis, and also all the nationalities living here. If I have to choose my favorites, I have a few: The people, both Kuwaitis, and the expatriates, the beautiful sea; the sunrises and sunsets, the big moon, Mubarakiya, and all the new small businesses that have been opening in the last 10 years both in the city and in Shuwaikh, and I am in love with the Kuwait Towers and Shaheed Park. What does a typical day at work look like for you? In normal conditions, I arrive at the office at around 7.00 am, have a coffee, and have a chat with some of the other colleagues who are early birds like me. Then I start checking the diary to see the plan for the day. Answer some emails, and normally have different meetings, with the management team, my team, and sometimes external partners. I always try to find some time to take a walk around the store to see what’s happening in our business and have lunch at the co-worker’s restaurant where I can get freshly made food in-store and enjoy it with my colleagues for less than 500fils. I would do some

work in the afternoon, meet someone from my team or a colleague for a coffee and then go home around 6 pm. Since COVID started, all of these activities are done virtually, including the coffee and the lunch! When you’re not working, what do you do to relax? What are some of your favorite spots to visit in Kuwait? I am a big fan of the sea. So my perfect Friday would include sailing with my friends in the Kuwait Offshore Sailing Association (KOSA) based in Fahaheel SeaClub. We sail for about three hours and then we have a nice brunch together. This is my me-time, completely relaxed. I also love going to Mubarakiya and to the fish Market in Souq Sharq. I also love to spend time with friends at gatherings, walking by the sea close to my home, and I usually walk all the way from Shaab to the beautiful Kuwait Towers. In closing, is there anything else you would like to add? I have loved every minute of the eleven years that I have been in Kuwait and that I would love to continue enjoying it for another eleven years! I am a very positive person and I am sure that Kuwait and IKEA have a brilliant future ahead. I want to wish everyone the best for themselves and their families. Here’s to better times coming our way. To learn more about the IKEA Festival, log onto ikea.com/kw/en/campaigns/ikea-festival. Follow IKEA’s latest updates on social media @IKEAKuwait.

bazaar weekends

BE THE TEACHER “The art of teaching, is the art of assisting discovery” - Mark Van Doren By bazaar staff

Learning something new is always a great idea, yet we often forget that it is just as valuable to pass on our own knowledge. Use this weekend to help someone else level up their skills.

Other than the obvious benefits to the student, the teacher (You, in this case) will also be getting a return on the time investment. It is a great way to improve your leadership skills, because you will need to be patient but also firm and guide without overstepping. You will also be able to see things differently. If you have been doing something for a long time, you have probably forgotten what it was like being a newbie and having to hold someone else’s hand while they take their first steps might help you see newer and better ways of doing things. Which means you will also practice empathy and compassion, getting out of your own head will probably give you an unexpected mental health boost. If you have no idea where to start or think there’s nothing you can add to anyone else’s body of knowledge, we’re here to help you. HELP OUT A FRIEND Start with a friend, since they will be the easiest to reach and the least judgemental. Your chosen skill might be Dutch braids or tuning a car, whatever it is, find something you are already good at and offer to show a pal how it is done. Once you are done asking for constructive feedback, be open to new ways of explaining and tr y to fine tune your technique. 30

START THEM YOUNG Or think small and find a young child who wants to learn how to ride a bike or learn how to make lunch on their own. It’s an opportunity for bonding and quality time and you will definitely feel better once you are done knowing that you helped someone level up in the game of life. Teaching children at a young age how to do basic life things, such as doing up their own shoe laces, putting away their dinner plate to something more complicated like how to figure out a tough Algebra equation is invaluable. Don’t be surprised to learn a few new things yourself (mostly, patience!), as this is a knowledge trip with gains for both parties. GIVE YOUR ELDERS THE COMPETITIVE EDGE Moving up the age ladder, are your parents. It could also be an aunt or a grandparent. Your mom taught you how to use a spoon and blow your nose and it is your turn to return the favor when she asks you to help her navigate TikTok Block out some time to show her how to clean up her phone or program her streaming service so she can watch her favorite shows. Most importantly, you can teach your elder relatives about Internet fraud and safe smartphone practices. Even better, take up a new hobby together and you can both learn something new! It’s a sweet gesture and an exercise in humility because it will remind you that we need each other.

AEROPLANE FLIES THROUGH TUNNEL AT 245 KM/H TO SET WORLD RECORDS Italian pilot Dario Costa clears Turkey’s dual Çatalca Tunnels in under 44 seconds. By bazaar staff

Just after dawn on Saturday, 4 September 2021, professional race and stunt pilot Dario Costa of Italy wrote a new chapter in aviation history as he flew a race plane through the narrow confines of two enclosed auto tunnels just outside Istanbul. Closely surrounded by the concrete arc of the walls, Costa executed a tricky takeoff inside the first tunnel, flashed through an open-air gap and then continued his flight at 245 km/h through the second tunnel, flying no more than one meter from the asphalt. Here’s everything you need to know about Tunnel Pass: Costa, 41, won the top category of the Italian Aerobatic Championship and became first Italian pilot to join, and earn a race win in, the Red Bull Air Race Challenger Class. With over two decades of flying experience, and numerous aviation feats to his credit, he has flown more than 60 airplane models and logged over 5,000 hours in the air – more than half in high-performance aerobatics. Tunnel Pass was by far Costa’s most demanding and complex undertaking yet, requiring a team of 40 people, especially developed training technology and more than a year of preparation. Throughout, the project was shrouded in secrecy to limit variables and distractions, allowing complete focus for a successful flight that was no more than a simple idea on paper 12 months ago. Located outside Istanbul on Northern Marmara Highway and initially put into service in March 2020, the dual Çatalca tunnels are state-of-the-art; but were designed for automobile traffic, not an aircraft in full flight. At the controls of his specially modified Zivko Edge 540 race plane, Costa took off inside the first tunnel at 6:43 am local time (TRT), with the early hour putting the sun at the pilot’s back and offering optimal ambient conditions. Limited overhead clearance meant that he had to keep the aircraft on a flight path just above the asphalt, while also managing a tight distance of barely four meters between each wingtip and the unforgiving tunnel walls. Complicating the trajectory were changes in tunnel incline and shape. From take-off to exiting the second tunnel, the flight lasted 43.44 seconds, covering a distance of 2,260 m / 2.26 km and reaching an average speed of 245 km/h in the second tunnel. Changes to airflow, combined with the highly sensitive steering of the aircraft, required pilot reaction times of less than 250 milliseconds and fine hand movements of mere millimeters throughout the flight. One of most critical moments came at

the 360 m gap between tunnels, which exposed the race plane to cross winds as Costa prepared to thread it into the low, narrow opening of the second tunnel. Costa described: “Everything seemed to be happening so fast, but when I got out of the first tunnel, the plane started to move to the right because of the cross winds, and in my head, everything slowed down in that moment. I reacted and just focused on getting the plane back on the right path to enter the other tunnel. Then in my mind everything sped up all over again.” When the race plane shot out of the other side, Costa pulled it into a celebratory loop before landing. The ecstatic pilot said: “I’d never flown in a tunnel in my life – nobody had ever done it – so there was a big question mark in my head

whether everything would go as we expected or if there would be something to improvise. It was a big relief, of course, but big, big happiness was the main emotion. For me it’s another dream come true.” The achievement set a new Guinness World Record: Longest Tunnel Flown through with an Airplane (1,610 m). Four other notable records were: first airplane flight through a tunnel, longest flight under a solid obstacle (1,610 m), first airplane flight through two tunnels, first airplane takeoff from a tunnel. Costa was mentored by Hungarian aerobatic and racing pilot Péter Besenyei, 65, an aviation legend renowned for his role in developing and competing in the Red Bull Air Race. Besenyei is also well known for feats such as flying upside

down under the Chain Bridge in Budapest. Besenyei said: “To fly in a tunnel is not a normal situation. The main point is the mindset. Because to fly straight at one meter off the ground and follow a center line is not really so difficult technically if you are over a runway. But in the tunnel, especially a dark tunnel, and to come out of the tunnel into the light and then back into another dark tunnel, it’s different. And also there are air waves that can affect the flight, and you should expect some bumps. It’s difficult in your mind because you know that if you make a mistake, the wall is hard.”

INSIDE OUT

Peeling back the layers with Hamad Jaman By bazaar staff

A riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma. Not the exact phrase one thinks of when imagining a social media influencer putting themselves out there for all to see. But how much of what the audience actually does see is the real person behind Tik Tok influencer @freckledlight? With an Instagram following of nearly seventy thousand on @freckledlightskin, and hundreds of thousands of views on Tik Tok; “he lives rent free in my For You,” bemoans one particular bazaarite; what we see must be what we get, surely? bazaar sat down with the social media star and model to discuss an upcoming project and ended up discovering surprisingly more about Hamad the person. Google Hamad Jaman and of course his model agency’s name pops up immediately. You can also however find his pictures pinned under collections titled, “Unusual people whose looks can take your breath away,” or, “People whose genetics make them look breathtakingly unique”. He is a very handsome man; symmetrical, balanced features, a dimpled smile, neat frame, and lean body; Hamad is in all reality classically good looking. But, it’s what’s on top of this sound structure that makes Hamad unusual. Like his handles suggest there is light skin, more than a healthy smattering of freckles, a head of 4c curls, a deeply titian beard when it comes through, and brown eyes that feature circles of darkest mahogany on the outside to a rich hazelnut near the blackest of pupils. Unique in the modelling world, the last few years have seen Hamad arrive at exactly the right time to exploit his genes for good. The world is ready and waiting for body positive role models and we’ve seen fashion icons storming the industry like Ashley Graham, Rain Dove and Winnie Harlow. Thanks to Dove’s Real Beauty and #ShowUs campaigns, we now have access to thousands of untouched images that span a much broader spectrum of beauty than we’ve previously experienced as an audience. 36

Hamad on set for The Body Shop bazaar asks Hamad if he thinks he’d be as successful a model if typical beauty standards weren’t being effed in the way that they are today - follow @effyourbeautystandards on Instagram to see more on the campaign started in 2013 by Tess Holliday - and he goes on to explain that he doesn’t really take all this too seriously. He was injured as a footballer, and got scouted to be a model in Sweden. He fell into the fashion industry and it’s not something he ever wanted to do, but he takes advantage of what comes his way confirming, “I don’t really do what I’m not paid to do.” Hamad certainly seems thoughtful, in a pondering manner, not an empathetic manner, and it’s possible that being bullied as a child for his unorthodox looks and brought up by his mother and sisters, all strong, accomplished women, has developed his personality to be contemplative, distrustful and honest. Although to be fair, bazaar would hazard a guess that apparent transparency is also a tactic to stop inquisitive people delving further and therefore is an effective barrier to

letting people in. Hamad explains that he finds the day-to-day interactions between people harping on about their coffee or effusing about other inconsequential and meaningless activities tiresome. #aintnobodygottimeforthat comes to mind so while the attitude may sound harsh, it’s not delivered in a completely derisory way. Hamad’s not actually wrong either, because it does mean he cuts out all the chaff of interpersonal engagement. Curious about how Hamad develops deep relationships if he doesn’t jump through the hoops and ceremonies of social forming to get there, bazaar asks about his friendships. Hamad does have his select, small circle of close friends he assures us, and it is obvious he also loves and deeply respects his immediate family; he is sporting a hoodie that reads, “Women don’t owe you sh*t” after all. And there you have it: Hamad Jaman; an extroverted introvert, gregariously detached, a somewhat antisocial, social media star, a model of the moment, brother, son and man, and still a tough nut to crack.

AUK campus tours for new students promise a new academic year filled with new experiences By bazaar staff

We can’t contain our excitement for all of the students going back to campus this fall! While we’ve learned invaluable lessons from how technology has helped us stay on task when it comes to work and studies, there’s nothing quite like a real, in-person campus experience. The coffee with friends between classes, as well as the amazing life experiences which students only learn when they are on campus. This is why we were delighted to learn that The American University of Kuwait (AUK) held a series of tours to introduce new students to the campus in preparation to welcoming them back into the University. The tours were held over one week which allowed the 200 student participants to be divided into small groups each day to comply with safety measures.

Guided by a University staff member, the students visited some of the campus facilities including the newly opened building that houses classrooms, theater, media studio, and restaurant, followed by a visit to the offices of admissions and registrar where respective staff talked to the students about their services. The students then visited the AUK Library where a librarian similarly guided them through the facility. All of these visits will prepare them for their upcoming academic journey, which will surely be super exciting as well as enlightening. The groups were also taken to see the liberal arts and sciences buildings that house more classrooms and laboratories, in addition to the campus diner and auditorium. Concluding the tour with the University’s recreational facilities, the groups were shown the Student Center Building where they could enjoy the campus gyms and student lounge, perfect for hanging out in between classes! AUK has already begun the fall semester on the 26th of September online, but students will be back to campus for in-person learning starting this month. We wish all of the new and returning students the best of luck with their new academic year, and we hope that they make the most out of in-person learning and being back on campus! The American University of Kuwait (AUK) is an independent, private, equal opportunity, and coeducational liberal arts institution of higher education. The educational, cultural and administrative structure, methods and standards of AUK are based on the American model of higher learning.

BORN IN KUWAIT: 70 YEARS OF

HASSAN’S OPTICIAN COMPANY

From building Kuwait’s first lens-grinding machine in the 1950s to becoming the leader in everything eyewear, this local success story has captured our hearts By bazaar staff

It goes without saying that technology is transforming our shopping habits, as everything we could ever desire is merely a few taps away. We’re seeing the online revolution take on every industry, and the realm of eyewear and optical eye-care is no different. Ask a typical online shopper about their recent experience in purchasing a pair of shades, and they will probably tell you that they’ve logged on to hassans.com to expand their collection of Ray-Bans. They do this seamlessly and emerge extremely satisfied with their latest buy. But little do they know that behind this distinguished website is a 70-year old legacy and an inspiring local success story that has shaped the eyewear and optical care industry in Kuwait as we know it—all thanks to the keen eye of Hassan Saadat. When Hassan Saadat first arrived in Kuwait from Iran as a newly qualified optician in 1951, he was armed with a passion for his field of knowledge and a philanthropic desire to improve the quality of the lives of the people in Kuwait by providing them with easy access to optical healthcare. Today, the company is still going strong after 70 years of continuously elevating the quality of eye-care in Kuwait, defining the latest trends in the world of fashionable eyewear accessories through successful high-end brand partnerships, as well as boasting an impressive range of eye-care services featuring the highest clinical standards across more than 40 stores, a specialized Hassan’s Optician Company and ZEISS lens factory, providing audiological care, and so much more. As we delve deep into Hassan’s Optician Company’s history, we can’t help but feel utterly fascinated by how the determination of a sole individual can be an immensely strong driving force for growth and success. Let’s backtrack to Hassan’s Optician Company’s early start in 1951. Opening his very first store in Kuwait’s emerging commercial hub of Sharq, he was also the first officially approved practicing optician in Kuwait as licensed by the country’s then newly developed Department of Health. A historic reflection of how far Kuwait has come is impressively mirrored in the success of Hassan’s Optician Company, as times were truly different, and Kuwait was on the cusp of a rapid path towards development. People regularly gathered outside of Hassan’s first store, waiting for it to open and seeking solutions to improve the quality of their everyday lives. With no access to the commercial-grade lens grinder he required to service his customers’ eye-care needs, Hassan built it himself utilizing the sands of Kuwait’s beautiful shoreline. Each and every pair of lenses chosen by a given customer was manufactured and hand-finished in his store and

his days were long and arduous, often lasting 18 hours in the shop to deliver on his commitments to his customers. Hard work does pay off, and as Hassan continued to support the people of Kuwait throughout the decades, his passion was reciprocated. People from Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and even Iran fawned to the store because of his distinguished, dedicated service and quality of eye-care services; the company even expanded internationally in Oman in 1969. As Kuwait continued to set new standards for healthcare and health education after its independence in 1961, Hassan’s Optician Company went to great lengths to continue to remain at the forefront of eyewear and ophthalmic care. The first flagship showroom in Al-Muthana Complex opened its doors in 1986, and today the company boasts over 40 stores in Kuwait. As local demand for fashionable eyewear grew, Hassan pioneered the way forward for high-end brand partnerships in Kuwait during the 60s, most notably the company’s partnerships with brands like Ray-Ban and Dior and so much more. At that point, people loved Hassan’s Optician Company for not only offering quality eye-care solutions but also finding the hottest trends in the ever-expanding world of eyewear fashion. In celebrating their 70th anniversary this year, Hassan’s Optician Company is planning an exciting line-up of special collaborations with their most celebrated design partners, all to be unveiled on their social platforms later this month. As Kuwait flourished after the hardships brought on by the 1990 invasion, so did Hassan’s Optician Company. Hassan’s son Kian joined the business in 1991, and together they’ve successfully diversified the family business to include even more exciting offerings and services in the healthcare sector. Hassan’s also entered the hearing care sector in 1987 with Hassan’s Hearing Care Centers gathering all the market leaders in hearing aids for all ages under one roof, which is another story for another day. Hassan’s Optician Company saw more success in distribution opportunities in the UAE, created a successful high-end Avant guard brand as you may be familiar with, Eye Boutique, which was only a natural progression for the company’s clear success with the world’s most stylish eyewear brands. As providing the very best eye-care services at the core of its mission, Hassan’s Optician Company is able to do this today on an impressive scale. In 2016, Hassan’s Opticians Company proudly set the standard for eye-care in Kuwait by opening their own state-of-the-art factory in Kuwait to produce the internationally distinguished ZEISS German Ophthalmic lenses. Solidifying their position as a positive market leader in the optical industry in the Middle East, this milestone is definitely worthy of celebration.

Like his father, Kian Saadat is also a fully qualified optician. Alongside his father, they’ve taken the company to new areas of business and new successes. Today, the ZEISS Lab hosts the most cuttingedge innovative tech to better service Hassan’s Optician Company customers in Kuwait. Before this special factory opening, customers’ specs were sent to the specialized ZEISS Lab abroad to be manufactured to the exact requirements. But now, the wait is over, as the high-tech lab can produce all sorts of ZEISS lenses, including Progressive Lenses which utilize technology to deliver the customer with the most precise fit, Lenses with UV Protect Technology, the famous ZEISS DuraVision BlueProtect lenses which are perfect for screen time and indoor activities, digital lenses, driving lenses and so much more.

THE PRESSURE TO BE PERFECT

You can’t escape the messaging anymore! By bazaar staff

We were driving on the Fifth Ring Road to the Avenues for work when we started counting billboards that were advertising some kind of cosmetic procedure. Almost every one of them was telling us that we needed to change our appearance, fix our skin or transform our teeth into a blinding row of perfectly aligned white pearls.

We noticed the ads and they definitely rubbed us the wrong way. It’s not that we have anything against cosmetic surgery, but they felt so incessant. They seemed like a constant reminder of how we were just not good enough. Take a walk in any mall and you will notice how so many women have the same nose, lips and teeth. We’re used to habbat, we’ve been through the rise and fall of so many from fried chicken to hoodies that we have come to expect and anticipate them. Unfortunately, going under the knife is more permanent than chasing the latest Yeezys. There also seems to be very little information on who can offer these procedures. Some are available at clinics while some can be done in a salon under minimal supervision and disinfection. 44

What kind of training does someone need before they can inject botox or whatever the newest kind of filler is? And before you start telling us that the place you have chosen has so many before and after photos we are going to stop you. How do you even know that these photos are legit? It is easy to over promise and then not deliver. As adults, we are all being pushed to strive for an imaginary standard of perfection and forget that they’re just social constructs. But the real danger is how these ads are being viewed and internalized by younger kids. If all their small eyes can see are giant reminders of what is beautiful and worth striving for, we’re robbing them of selfacceptance and appreciation of themselves. Isn’t the constant stream of content from Tiktok,

YouTube and Instagram Reels enough? Just spend a couple of minutes on any of these apps and you will notice that the content creators that are being recommended by the algorithms are the conventionally pretty ones. They’re almost always thin, affluent and beautiful with perfect teeth. It is almost impossible for them to believe that being average or god-forbid, different is ok. There’s not much we can do about the billboards or the digital content, but we can keep having these conversations with our friends and kids to remind them and ourselves that we don’t need to be perfect, we just need to be perfectly ok with who we are.

COLLABORATE FOR CREATIVITY

The fascinating brain chemistry behind team collaboration and unbridled creativity By Paul Charney

One day, Elsa Einstein, wife of the famous Albert, saw her husband wander over to the piano, jot down some notes, keep playing, then disappear into a room for two weeks. When he emerged, he had a working theory of relativity that would change physics forever. What Albert Einstein probably experienced when playing his beloved music—which fed directly into the beauty of his science—was a state of flow that musicians, artists, and anyone really, can reach when their minds are lubricated and ready to unleash unbridled creativity. That creativity can be translated into jazz music, quantum mechanics, and business strategy. Not to detract from the importance of his physics, but I put it to you that Albert was as much a genius for giving us another equation: “Creativity = intelligence having fun.” My creative agency has played with that idea in our quest to help organizations achieve progressive thinking and extreme collaboration toward any goal. To circle back to our science theme: There’s a chemical reason for that. When cortisol, the stress hormone, floods our brains, it makes us close in on ourselves. But when we feed our brain dopamine, endorphins, and a whole lot of other goodies, we are lubing it up to get into that state of flow. Open with oxytocin: Psychological safety Imagine you’re daydreaming in the shower. You’re completely relaxed, and your brain is sinking into deeper levels of thinking. What you’re doing there is creating a safe space where you can just be you—sing, think, stare . . . . That’s what we refer to as psychological safety. Now, how do we create that in a room full of our peers, or on a Zoom call full of strangers? The first ingredient of our brain cocktail is the social hormone oxytocin, also known as the “trust” or “cuddle” hormone. Oxytocin is the only hormone that needs other people around to be released, and is responsible for that toasty, calm feeling we get when we’re with people we care about. So how do we trigger it? It’s about making connections through talking, laughing, sharing a moment, or even just eye contact. One way you can do this is taking a joint break during a team meeting, in which everyone turns their cameras on, makes “eye contact,” and shares a funny or embarrassing story they experienced or heard recently. Sometimes, if a team member seems stuck, it may be a good idea to put them in a space with someone they cherish, like a partner, and tell them to just spend time with them. They’ll come back refreshed and in a better frame of mind. 46

Drive up the dopamine: Get engaged You and your friend are riffing off each other after watching the latest Fast and Furious movie. Each of you is coming up with more and more ridiculous one-liners; you’re giggling like children, and you feel a warm, contented feeling. And you’re at it for a good 10 minutes. That’s dopamine coursing through your body—the happy feeling that’s so rewarding you keep wanting more, so you stay engaged with whatever it is you’re doing. Dopamine can be triggered by something exciting or hilarious, by singing or playing a game. It’s what concentrates your thoughts and gets you lost in the moment. We can release dopamine when working in a team by simply bringing in more fun, whether by transforming a task or by sprinkling some in. For example, you can start a meeting with a funny video, or interrupt with a pop quiz. Or, gamify your meeting’s agenda so that whenever a team member contributes an idea towards that new marketing strategy, they enter a raffle for a free latte (even though your office already has courtesy coffees). That chemical will generate great ideas, and make people latch onto them so they can continue to grow. Exercise your endorphins: Clear your mind When we think about endorphins we think about sports, running, and exercising. That’s all true, but you can also work them up by standing up

instead of sitting. Having sex. Making things with your hands. Dancing. For people with physical disabilities, it can be released through social touch and hugs (which doubles it up with oxytocin). Endorphins generate a euphoric feeling, and that release actually gives people better clarity of thought, and puts them in a relaxed state. In a workplace, that is a crucial stage in working toward an “aha” moment—those moments where all the cobwebs are brushed away to reveal a singular, genius idea. Oxytocin prepares you, dopamine gets you focused, and endorphins help you prioritize and crystalize an idea. A good way of upping endorphin levels during the workday is to encourage people to take a “walking meeting,” in which they join a Zoom call from their phones while out on a walk. In-office meetings can be paused for a “shake it out” break; also, you could add a few workout machines to the office and explain to your team how important endorphins are to creative productivity. We get used to thinking and ideating within the same molds, and sometimes we don’t understand how to get unstuck. Our own bodies provide the solution. We have everything we need to unlock the (perhaps rusty) doors to our weird and wonderful imaginations—we just need to be our own bartender in making that cocktail come to life. HIT THE ROOF

Rooftops can be used for so many things By Adele Peters

On the rooftop of a hospital in the Dutch city of Rotterdam, patients can visit a small orchard filled with fruit trees. A neighboring art museum has a rooftop forest planted with birch trees that were raised to survive at a slightly higher altitude. Nearby, a nearly 4,000-foot-long building is topped with a park that has vegetable gardens, picnickers, and grazing sheep. On other roofs in the city, pilot projects are testing the potential of tiny homes.

The city is a pioneer in finding new uses for a part of urban space that’s often ignored. In a new book called Rooftop Catalogue, Rotterdam-based architecture firm MVRDV and the organization behind an annual “rooftop day” festival in the city explore more potential ways to transform roofs and how the whole rooftop landscape could change. “Rooftop use could make a huge contribution to the densification of the city—and it could also prevent us from building more on the outskirts of our cities,” Winy Maas, cofounder of MVRDV, said in an interview included in the book. In Rotterdam, the team calculated that if 10% of the city’s roofs were used for housing, it could create 15,000 comfortably sized small homes. Like backyard houses, small rooftop homes can help add new residential space to neighborhoods that are already built up. Roofs could also be used to extend space from existing apartments or for adding new coworking spaces to apartment buildings. 48

Adding green space to roofs can help counter the urban heat island effect—the fact that cities are hotter than rural areas because of the heat radiating off of streets, parking lots, and buildings. Rooftop gardens can also support biodiversity, help reduce air pollution, and absorb rainwater in storms. The book looks at a range of designs, like a “silent garden” that gives residents an oasis from urban noise; an urban farm; and a “green monument” (an abandoned building that’s allowed to be overtaken by nature, including on the roof). Other concepts range from simple—such as a rooftop space for outdoor yoga or a dog park or community workshop spaces for DIY projects— to the absurd, like a roller coaster that starts on a roof and then wraps around a skyscraper. The designers also suggest using roofs for bike parking, as shortcuts for pedestrians, or as potential drone deliver y stations.

Of course, roofs can also be covered with solar panels. But the book argues for a diversity of uses. (In some cases, different uses could happen on the same roof; green space can help keep solar panels cooler and operating more efficiently, for example.) And even if fewer than half of the roofs in Rotterdam were used for solar power, the authors calculate, that would be enough to power a million households. There are challenges, including the fact that most buildings need to be retrofitted to handle excess weight on the roof. But cities should be thinking about how to encourage new uses, the designers say. “I think we need a new Building Code, or rather a Rooftop Code,” Maas says in the book. “You should be able to stack the four elements—water, greenery, energy, and population—on top of each other, like a sandwich.” Photo by garrett parker on Unsplash.

CLASS NOTES

The 3rd Grade Science Teacher Teaches the Plague By Craig Loomis

“Good morning to you all. First and foremost, I have this bit of information to share with you.” He looks down at the piece of paper in his hand. “There is something like the plague going around. They call it a virus, but it’s a plague. Everybody says so.” He stops here to see who is listening. Ali, whose mother is an important minister, is staring at the wall, yawning. At the back of the classroom, the Emerson sisters have not stopped whispering, giggling. Meanwhile, Mohammad, who is forever raising his hand, is raising his hand. He continues, “The newspapers, the TV say we must be extra careful. For a start, wash your hands like you mean it. That, and stay away from others. Any questions?” This brings some general classroom murmuring, some nodding and much looking down at their hands, turning them this way and that. Mohammad holding up his hand. “By the way, if you must sneeze or cough do it in private, better yet, wear one of those doctor masks. You’ve seen them on TV, the doctor shows, sah? Like that, and who knows, you may even become a doctor someday.” “Sir, my mother wants me to become a doctor someday. She says it would bring respect and honor to our family,” says Mohammad, who has held up his hand up long enough and cannot wait any longer. ‘Quite right. Anybody else?” “My grandpa says doctors make lots of money and he wants me to make lots of money.” “Me too.” “Me too.” “I won’t mind wearing a mask if it will make me money,” smiles Mohammad. “Sir, can I wear a black mask? I mean, is there any rule about what color?” “Yes, black is fine.” “Wait, only bandits and gangsters wear black masks. You’ll look like a robber,” says, Khalid, who sits next to Mohammad, who is his friend, who has convinced Mohammad that they should fail math together, as friends. When the Emerson sisters laugh, both Mohammad and Khalid turn to look, to frown together. “How about a green mask? My uncle wears a green mask, I’ve seen it.” “Green is for vegetables and grass. Doctors would never wear a green mask.” “Yes, any color will do. The mask will help keep you safe from others and that way your germs will stay trapped around your mouth and nose. Better you than others. Regardless, this plague is nothing to sneeze at.” He waits for what should have been laughter, but the Emerson sisters haven’t stopped snickering at Khalid, while the others continue to look at their hands. Now it is his turn to look out the window, squinting at the sandy blue heat of midday. He starts by speaking to the window pane. “Truth be told, if it is not a disease like the Black Plague, smallpox, yellow fever, if not some germ, then

64

there’s always some war going on down the street, some gangster in the alley ready to take your money or your life.” He turns to the class and some of them are watchful, most not. “Class, the ready-made list of catastrophes is lengthy: assorted earthquakes followed by a tremendous tsunami or two; massive flooding and swarms of locust are fashionable these days. Throw in the daily death and dying of old age and cancer run unchecked, and there you have it. But massive events like this virus only happen every generation or so. It has to do with cycles, natural cycles, a matter of striking a universal balance. It is all very natural. Very natural.” Mohammad has raised his hand. “Some of us like this natural cycle explanation, because then it is not our fault, nobody’s fault. You see? It just is. Still, we have a chance if we do the right thing, follow instructions and hope all will work out for the best. That is what school is all about: listen carefully and follow their instructions. Listen carefully.” Front-row Sara is looking up at him, writing in her notebook and looking up at him: writing, looking, writing, looking. There is some general shifting of desks and scraping of chairs. The three cousins sitting next to the big window are watching something outside, but when he steps closer to see what they see, he sees nothing but the everyday street and trees, and one…. two taxis. “Sir, I have a question.” “Yes.” “Sir, who are the ‘they’?” “They?”

“Yes sir, you keep talking about they—they want us to wear a mask, they want us to wash our hands. Who are they?” “They, the big they. People who know, who are experts, who spend their whole life studying things like plague and virus and horrible germs. You know, they.” “Yes, sir, I see,” says Mohammad. Sara has not stopped writing. “Any final questions?” “One final question, sir.” “Yes, Mohammad.” “So, I can wear a black mask and won’t get in trouble? I mean, terrorists wear masks all the time.” The three cousins have stopped looking out the window at that something that he never saw, but for some reason he does not find this reassuring. “Yes, we will make an exception for you, this one time.” “You said we must stay away from each other, but how?” says Khalid, still glancing back at the Emerson sisters. “How, sir?” “How?” “Sir, I have friends, three, maybe four, and then there is my family, my brother Saud is a fireman and my sisters Dina and…. “ ‘ “Never mind, just do it.” And he drops the piece of paper on his desk. “Now, anything else?” “Sir?” asks Khalid. “What is it?” “Sir, will any of this be on Thursday’s test?” Photo by Kelly Sikkema on Unsplash.

PORSCHE CENTRE KUWAIT WINS MARKETING INNOVATION AWARD Locally developed Porsche Taycan campaign #ThatsWhyOurSoulsConnect featuring prominent Kuwaiti personalities garners local and regional acclaim By bazaar staff

What unites custom woodworking artist Yahya Jeragh, automotive enthusiast Louay Bahman, equestrian champion Yara Al-Hunaidi, sports and fitness entrepreneur Abdullah Al-Askari, and swimming champion Zain Alabdeen Qali? An unbridled passion for taking on life’s biggest challenges and a shared sense of hope for a more sustainable future, emblematic of the ever so distinctive Porsche Taycan. Featured in Porsche Centre Kuwait’s #ThatsWhyOurSoulsConnect campaign, the social media video series has captured the hearts and minds of the local community, garnering Porsche Centre Kuwait, Behbehani Motors Company the prestigious Marketing Innovation Award for 2020.

The highly emotive and engaging Taycan campaign which builds on the Taycan’s #SoulElectrified motto asks prominent Kuwaitis the age-old question: Why do our souls connect? And delivering their answers via an empowered storytelling narrative, we see each personality in their own element, representing the powerful driving force behind the innovative, all-electric Porsche Taycan.

68

The accolade, organized by Porsche Middle East and Africa, the brand’s regional office supporting a total of 19 markets, was announced during a recent conference. It is the second time Porsche Centre Kuwait has collected the esteemed award since its introduction in 2017. The nominations focused on engaging people with the all-new Taycan, Porsche’s first fully electric sports car. The team of Porsche Centre

Kuwait developed the best campaign which saw respected Kuwaitis who have excelled in a number of disciplines in the sporting, arts, and cultural communities, tell their story of willpower, ambition, and talent, linking them to the Taycan’s unique features. Hany Marie, General Manager at Porsche Centre Kuwait, said the campaign carries the personal touch and the emotion that Porsche

owners already relate to and introduces it to the exciting new Taycan that will propel Porsche into the future: “Using the hashtag #ThatsWhyOurSoulsConnect, this is all about passion and striving in your own field of work. By choosing an artist, a horseback rider, a racing driver, a swimmer, and a fitness professional, we see the passion that has lifted them to their respective heights and how that influences every other part of their day and ultimately relates to their love of a sustainable future that the new Taycan can deliver.” “We are exceptionally proud to win this award for a second time and as our customers already know, they can rest assured that Porsche Centre Kuwait is always looking for new innovations and initiatives to create engaging content that is attractive to our customers and fans and connects the Porsche values with their lifestyle.” The #ThatsWhyOurSoulsConnect campaign was judged based on the creativity of the content, innovation in the experiential marketing strategy, the effectiveness of the campaign in enhancing public awareness, and its contribution to increasing brand equity. The Marketing Innovation Award also factors efficiency and quality. Markus Peter, Marketing Director at Porsche Middle East and Africa FZE, congratulated the team: “The launch of the brand’s first fully electric vehicle required a break with traditional ways of communication to create wider awareness

for our E-Performance program and reach new target groups. The team at Porsche Centre Kuwait created an engaging campaign that linked the talent and ambition of individuals with the features of our Taycan, a benchmark model at the forefront of electric sports cars for everyday usability.” The videos were posted on Porsche‘s local and international social media channels and shared many times, showing how five Kuwaiti talents including Yahya Jeragh, custom woodworking artist, Louay Bahman, automotive enthusiast, Yara Al-Hunaidi, equestrian champion, Abdullah Al-Askari, sports and fitness entrepreneur and swimming champion, Zain Alabdeen Qali, connect their respective skills and talents to the Porsche Taycan and everything it embodies.

“This combined effort from everyone at Porsche Centre Kuwait to create such a successful and emotive campaign is yet more evidence of the dedication and commitment shown by our dedicated team. None of this, however, could have been possible if it were not for the strong support and loyalty of our customers,” Hany Marie said.

THE COST OF PERFECTIONISM

“Is that the best you can do?” By Shani Harmon

How many times were you asked this as a child when you failed to achieve that per fect grade? How many times a day do you ask yourself this now in reference to your productivity, your output, your relationships, or your appearance? We live in a world of rampant per fectionism. While many of us take pride in our “high standards” and “drive for excellence,” we ignore the many negative side effects per fectionism can have on our health, happiness, and productivity. The costs of perfectionism Many of us were brought up to believe that achieving good grades and following the rules were the only paths to success. But this approach produces as much fear and dread, if not more, as learning, especially for learners who don’t thrive in the traditional “sit and get” environment. As Stanford University professor Carol Dweck has compellingly argued, the traditional model of teaching reinforces a “fixed mindset,” or the idea that you are either naturally intelligent or you simply aren’t. She demonstrates that in contrast, the “growth mindset“—the belief that intelligence can be developed—supports greater achievement in the long-run because students experience failure as momentary and optimistically embrace the next challenge. We define a growth mindset as the “conscious decision to view our abilities as dynamic assets we are continually developing.” This mindset is equally as important in our adult lives, as we grow, learn, and yes, fail in our careers, hobbies, and relationships. For individuals caught up in the impossible pursuit for per fection, studies show the result is often increased stress, anxiety, and depression. Discovering a typo after a presentation or missing a deadline can send them into a tailspin. Asking for help is viewed as an unacceptable sign of weakness. And because they are rewarded for being “diligent,” “going above and beyond,” being a great “team player,” and having “exceptional attention to detail,”these behaviors are positively reinforced and easily become ingrained habits. Organizations that expect per fection are often rewarded with extraordinary per formance — for a while. Over time, however, the relentlessness of the expectations and the lack of tolerance for anything less than per fect produces resentment, exhaustion, and ultimately burnout. As Stanford University professor Jeffrey Pfeffer argues in his book Dying for a Paycheck, “employers can, either intentionally or through ignorance and neglect, create workplaces that literally sicken and kill people.” While this may sound like an extreme statement, the biggest cause of chronic illness

72

is stress, and the most common source of that stress is the workplace. Breaking free from perfectionism How do you know when you’ve crossed the line from “going above and beyond” to damaging per fectionist tendencies? The difference between positive striving and maladaptive per fectionism has a few characteristics: • Per fectionists believe that the next thing must always be better than the last, leading to a vicious cycle of constantly falling short because the goal posts keep moving. • Per fectionists berate themselves for falling short of their self-imposed ideal even when others view their accomplishments as significant. In contrast, healthy achievers have the luxury of enjoying what they’re doing, even while stretching their limits. • Per fectionists suffer from depression, anxiety, and burnout because of the self-imposed stress of their own expectations. Avoiding the considerable downsides of per fectionism requires three mindset shifts, which we define under a “From-to” format: • From Everything matters to What matters most: When we shift from maximizing everything we do (trying to give both an A+ effort and achieve an A+ result) to prioritizing and devoting ourselves fully to only what deserves it, we free up critical time and space for self-renewal. • From The finish line to Interim milestones: Shifting from a black-and-white focus on results to recognizing the small wins along the way

helpfully signals “good job!” to our brain. As a result, we learn to celebrate progress rather than just outcomes. • From Doing it all to Doing what we can: Releasing ourselves from the unrealistic expectation of being able to do everything to doing the best we can enables us to let go. Developing a resilient culture If you’re an organizational leader trying to break the cycle of per fectionism in your own team, your leader signals are all-important. Be intentional, since every action you take as a leader shapes the culture. Here are some behaviors that can help you develop this type of culture. • Applaud, not just outcome, effort • Demonstrate vulnerability by revealing your own shortcomings and internal worries • Encourage prioritization and the willingness to say “no” particularly to higher-ups • Show humanity and empathy to your team. Lead with authentic connection before diving into the details of the work. Transforming the habit of per fectionism into a healthy culture that trusts and values the growth mindset takes considerable time and intention. But it’s worth it. If you want a resilient and happy workforce, the unsustainable cycle of per fection must be broken. Walking away from per fectionism does not mean lowering your standards. It simply means adopting a more nuanced view of the difference between effort and outcome. Photo by Jonathan Hoxmark on Unsplash.

BURCU IN KUWAIT Purveyor of deliciousness at Khaneen Restaurant by day, TikTok superstar by night! By bazaar staff

You might easily recognize Burcu from TikTok, as her account has garnered hundreds of thousands of followers and millions of views in such a short time span. She’s always posting her take on trending challenges and snippets about her life in Kuwait. And if you’re unsure about how to pronounce her name, she’s even dedicated an entire video on her page, just for that purpose, jokingly saying “It’s not Burk-oh, or Burj Khalifah, just Burju!” For this Turkish resident in K-town, moving here in 2016 was a dream come true. She was so eager to try something different, take on new challenges that would help her grow as a person, and get out of her comfort zone. With her current posting as Restaurant Supervisor with Al Hajery Group’s locally acclaimed Kuwaiti restaurant Khaneen, Burcu is making all her dreams come true. 74

Meeting Burcu for the first time, you can’t help but feel charmed by her welcoming demeanor. She’s kind, sweet and her bubbly personality is simply contagious. It’s only natural for her personality to shine online, as her reallife persona will instantly captivate you. “I’m generally a happy person, and I love making others feel happy. This is why I am so lucky to also be able to share my personality on social media, “ she begins to tell us her stor y, “Coming to Kuwait was a big move for me, but I knew I was doing the right thing for my future.” And that’s the beauty about living in Kuwait, as you get to meet people from different walks of life and experiences that truly change your outlook. Only in Kuwait will you find a Turkish resident opting out of working in a Turkish restaurant and choosing to delve into the world of Kuwaiti cuisine, learning new languages, and submerging themselves into something totally new and unknown. What was your first impression of Kuwait when you moved here in 2016? I was ner vous at first because I was coming from a really different culture. When I first arrived, I didn’t even know how to speak English yet, and I don’t know Arabic. I was happy to take on the challenge because I was so eager to plan for my future, and work hard and save money. Soon I realized that I don’t even need to speak in English or Arabic because the people were so welcoming and dealing with their body language alone made me feel so comfortable. I was so happy immediately, especially when I learned that locals love Turkish people, visit Turkey frequently and they even know some Turkish words! I honestly was ver y comfortable, Kuwait has become my second home and I am really finding myself here. What do you like the most about working in a Kuwaiti food restaurant? Why not Turkish? I actually started out as a hostess in a different Turkish restaurant with Al Hajer y, and the management has been so kind and encouraging when I requested to move to a different concept because I wanted a challenge and I wanted to learn new things. I wanted a new experience! When I came to work in Khaneen, I fell in love with the food immediately, but also I was the only Turkish person on the team. Our team has people of many different nationalities, and I was so ready to learn something new and learn English. Also, I love traditional Kuwaiti food, like rice and diyaay, and I am so lucky to work here because I am always hungr y, like all the time! I love this industr y so much, and I actually don’t want to work in fashion, or anything else. When did you begin your social media journey? What encouraged you to begin? I actually started with the ver y first lockdown.

My dream was to get into social media. I had always wanted to be a Vlogger or influencer but I was waiting for the right time because I was always focused on my work. When ever ything shut down, I said to myself this is the right time at this you can do something just right. I did my first video in Murouj Complex and the next day it was trending in Kuwait, even local news outlets picked it up! I am blown away by how welcoming my followers are in Kuwait. It just felt natural to continue from there, showing who I am at work and outside of work. Why do you love social media so much? I like to make people happy, this is something so special for me because when I see people are happy I feel happy as well! I love social life, being active, and when we are working so much I think it’s good to do something different. Also, working in the hospitality industr y requires you to be happy and social, so it was ver y natural for me to show my personality online. How does the team at Khaneen react to your social media videos? They are amazing! Our waiter is sometimes my cameraman, and our hostess is my number one supporter. Let’s be honest, when you work in the restaurant industry, you don’t have much of a social life, so the people you work with become your family, and I am so lucky to work with this amazing team at Khaneen. I am who I am today because of them and their support. We work hard at our jobs and we support each other with our passion, they give me ideas. We work the same hours, every day, and we make sure that we support one another with everything that we do. Do customers normally visit Khaneen and ask about you? Yes, they do! On Sundays, for example, we get a minimum of 15-20 people coming to ask about me, only to realize I am working a different shift. But to be honest, I think that people accept me and like me because I am an honest, friendly person. When people tell me they are shy to meet me, I encourage them to come and take a picture with me. After all, people are my supporters, as they are the ones who followed me, they encourage me to do more. I never imagined I would reach so many people online in such a short time, it is people’s love, acceptance, and support that have given me this opportunity. What do your followers always ask you when they visit you at Khaneen? Turkey is a ver y nice countr y, why are you living in Kuwait? I explain to them that I feel so safe and loved in Kuwait, that I never think of moving back! And it’s so easy to deal with locals here even before I learned English, just using body language, I found it so easy to communicate with ever yone.

What do you think was the hardest thing you faced when the pandemic first started in Kuwait? Who supported you throughout? It was scar y for ever yone at first. It was so difficult at that time actually because we couldn’t travel anywhere and I was worried about my family in Turkey, as my sister works as a nurse and she was always around positive COVID cases. I was going crazy. Most of my friends then eventually went back home, and I was alone here. When I decided to go on social media, it really helped my mood and I found support from so many people online. Even more important was how our company and the team supported one another during this time. We were always paid our salaries, and during the strictest lockdown days, we were always checking on each other, making sure that ever yone was safe and had what they needed to get through that difficult time. We met up during the times dedicated to walking, we all faced the challenges together. The biggest positive out of all of this is the relationship that I built with our team at Khaneen, I am ver y lucky to have gone through this with them. Let’s talk about Burcu the foodie, do you have a different personality inside and outside of work? [Burcu laughs] Before I went on social media, as a Restaurant Super visor I was definitely more serious at work and outside of work I am constantly laughing and joking. But then I realized that when I went on social media, that I can show who I really am even at work. My team used to be so surprised at first, telling me that I am not the same person who is on these funny TikTok videos. So, I relaxed a bit more, while always being professional of course, but definitely less serious. I was over Seeda (straight)! [laughs again] By now, my team knows me so well, they know when I am angr y, or if there is a mistake at work that needs to be fixed, they know how I will react. We’ve been working together for four years, and now I show them who I am all the time. Ever yone’s happier, I have nothing to hide, and I feel more relaxed at work. They tell me, “This Burcu is much better!” and I see how their attitude at work has positively changed too. They are ver y honest with me, come to me with any problem, and we have an amazing family atmosphere going. What is your favorite dish at Khaneen? Machboos Diyaaay! It is classic and delicious, and I always recommend the Khaneen fries, and the Fatoush! I love choosing these dishes for our patrons. How do you deal with negative people and comments? I always say to people, don’t believe everything you see on social media. I might come across as always happy online but I did go through difficult

times. When my sister got married and I couldn’t make it back home to attend, it was the first time I had cried in a very long time, and then I went live and my followers were telling me how it’s amazing that I am always so happy. It’s crazy. But when I first made the decision to get on social media, I told myself to accept the negative before the positive because it comes with the territory. It is expected. You can’t make everyone following you from different parts of the world happy. I grew stronger, and I am ready for everything. 76

[...Continued]

Finally, is it harder dealing with an unhappy customer at the restaurant, or a negative commenter on social media? Oh, social media for sure! Dealing with people in real life is always much better because we will continue to communicate to address the issue. People on social media don’t know my whole stor y, they know me from short videos online. Whereas here at Khaneen, my team knows me so well, they are aware of ever y mood change, they are my family.

Anything else you want to add? Thank you so much to ever yone who supported me, my team at Khaneen, my followers, my amazing company. I want to continue as I am, on this path, with ever yone’s support.

BRICK BY BRICK

Here’s how LEGO sets can make your workday more productive By Justin Pot—Zapier

My summer job as a teenager was taking care of plants at a nursery. A hot summer day spent pruning roses isn’t pleasant— there’s a lot of sweat and blood involved. But there’s a very real sense of accomplishment when you’re done. You turn around and see the hundreds of plants you just cleaned up, and you know without a doubt that you’ve done something. It’s a tangible sense of progress.

Humanity, I believe, is wired to crave that kind of accomplishment. Desk jobs don’t deliver it. Which is why my coworker is building a LEGO rocket in his home office. Productivity brick by brick Fokke Zandbergen, a senior engineer at Zapier, reached out to me because he was inspired by an article I wrote in 2014. It was about how I’d combined a simple set of LEGO bricks with a Pomodoro timer. I would work for 25 minutes, put one brick onto a platform, then take a five-minute break. The idea was that, at the end of the workday, I’d have a physical manifestation of the day’s work to look at. It’s no hoop house full of tidy rose plants, I’ll grant you, but it’s something—and it worked well for me. Fokke tried the same system, with a few twists. First, he put the blocks across the room, so he’d have to get up and walk to them after completing a task. “I wanted to force myself to get out of my chair, getting up and looking outside the window for a bit,” he told me. Second, he didn’t use the Pomodoro timer.

“The 25-minute thing didn’t fit my workflow,” he said. “So instead, I’d force myself to decide on a specific task to work on, actually work on that, log what I’d done, then take a break.” And there was one more tweak: Fokke colorcoded his bricks. “I used different colors to indicate how I felt about how I’d used the time,” he told me. Red bricks indicated a waste of time, yellow reflected an ok session, and blue indicated a very productive session (he was low on green). This setup worked—when he used it. Many days, he’d forget to use the system, and those days were consistently less productive. Fokke tried putting his snacks beside the bricks, thinking he’d be more likely to get up if there was food involved, but even that wasn’t enough motivation. So Fokke decided to step things up a notch. Blast off The problem with the bricks, Fokke concluded, was that there’s no progress over time. The day ends, then you reset. For a while, he left a single brick on

the board, so that he’d start the next day with some progress. It helped, but it still didn’t do the trick. So he started building an entire LEGO set. “My wife and kids bought me the Saturn V model, so I’m building that,” he told me. “Every time I complete a task, I do one step of the guide.” This single set, Fokke estimates, will last a while. “The rocket is 330 steps, but there are a bunch of steps that you have to repeat,” he said. “So I’ll be busy for quite some time.” There’s something about seeing tangible progress, day after day, that motivates Fokke in a way to-do list apps and time-tracking just don’t. “Unless a time management app is blocking a part of my screen, it’s really easy to just ignore it,” he said. “A LEGO set, though? I can’t ignore that.” It might seem odd, building LEGO sets in your office. But digital jobs don’t give you a lot of physical indication that you’re making progress. The LEGO set gives Fokke that sense of accomplishment. Maybe something similar will work for you. Photo by Daniel Cheung on Unsplash.

ADDRESSING CLIMATE CHANGE

3 technologies that are vital to fighting climate change By Kerry Rippy

In recent decades the cost of wind and solar power generation has dropped dramatically. This is one reason that the U.S. Department of Energy projects that renewable energy will be the fastest-growing U.S. energy source through 2050. However, it’s still relatively expensive to store energy. And since renewable-energy generation isn’t available all the time—it happens when the wind blows or the sun shines—storage is essential. Here are three emerging technologies that could help make this happen. Longer charges From alkaline batteries for small electronics to lithium-ion batteries for cars and laptops, most people already use batteries in many aspects of their daily lives. But there is still lots of room for growth. For example, high-capacity batteries with long discharge times—up to 10 hours—could be valuable for storing solar power at night or increasing the range of electric vehicles. Right now there are very few such batteries in use. However, according to recent projections, upwards of 100 gigawatts’ worth of these batteries will likely be installed by 2050. For comparison, that’s 50 times the generating capacity of Hoover Dam. This could have a major impact on the viability of renewable energy. Scientists are working to develop techniques for recycling lithium and cobalt batteries, and to design batteries based on other materials. Tesla plans to produce cobalt-free batteries within the next few years. Others aim to replace lithium with sodium, which has properties very similar to lithium’s but is much more abundant. Safer batteries Another priority is to make batteries safer. One area for improvement is electrolytes—the medium, often liquid, that allows an electric charge to flow from the battery’s anode, or negative terminal, to the cathode, or positive terminal. When a battery is in use, charged particles in the electrolyte move around to balance out the charge of the electricity flowing out of the battery. Electrolytes often contain flammable materials. If they leak, the battery can overheat and catch fire or melt. Scientists are developing solid electrolytes, which would make batteries more robust. It is much harder for particles to move around through solids than through liquids, but encouraging labscale results suggest that these batteries could be ready for use in electric vehicles in the coming years, with target dates for commercialization as early as 2026.

80

Storing sunlight as heat Other renewable energy storage solutions cost less than batteries in some cases. For example, concentrated solar power plants use mirrors to concentrate sunlight, which heats up hundreds or thousands of tons of salt until it melts. This molten salt then is used to drive an electric generator, much as coal or nuclear power is used to heat steam and drive a generator in traditional plants. These heated materials can also be stored to produce electricity when it is cloudy, or even at night. This approach allows concentrated solar power to work around the clock. This idea could be adapted for use with nonsolar power generation technologies. For example, electricity made with wind power could be used to heat salt for use later when it isn’t windy. Advanced renewable fuels Batteries are useful for short-term energy storage,

and concentrated solar power plants could help stabilize the electric grid. However, utilities also need to store a lot of energy for indefinite amounts of time. This is a role for renewable fuels like hydrogen and ammonia. Utilities would store energy in these fuels by producing them with surplus power, when wind turbines and solar panels are generating more electricity than the utilities’ customers need. Scientists are looking for ways to produce hydrogen and other fuels using renewable electricity. For example, it is possible to make hydrogen fuel by splitting water molecules using electricity. The key challenge is optimizing the process to make it efficient and economical. The potential payoff is enormous: inexhaustible, completely renewable energy.

DEALING WITH MICROAGRESSIONS

Four things you can try doing By Heather R. Younger

We all want to feel safe at work. But many of us end up feeling uncomfortable or hurt because of microaggressions. Intentional or unintentional, these actions can have a significant impact on our engagement and overall well-being. Microaggressions in the workplace can be against you or a fellow team member. But when is it okay to speak up? How can you approach these situations without fear of losing your job? Unfortunately, they often blindside victims when they least expect it. They usually come in the form of seemingly innocent comments by someone who might be unaware of the impact their words have on a colleague. For example, if a white person says to a Black woman, “You are really pretty!” Then, after getting to know her a bit more, the person says, “Oh my gosh, you are so smart too!” it would suggest that a Black woman cannot be both pretty and intelligent. Actions, such as a white woman clutching her purse when entering an elevator with a Black man, a white person asking to touch a Black person’s hair, or volunteering an Asian colleague to bring fried rice to a company picnic are all ever yday examples of microaggressions in the workplace. However, whether intentional or not, the communication to a person or a group of hostile, derogator y, or negative slights, having to do with race, gender, sexual orientation, and religion, has gone largely unnoticed and unreported. Thankfully, many are increasingly stepping up to correct the discriminator y behavior. Increasing awareness around the impact of these microaggressions can represent an opportunity to help managers evolve into caring and effective leaders. Here are four steps I recommend when attempting to approach microaggressions in the workplace. Step One: Create a safe space Employees impacted by microaggressions don’t always feel safe expressing their true thoughts and experiences. It might make them feel uncomfortable, or fear ful of retribution for speaking out. Creating space in which open conversations are encouraged, where employees can feel psychologically safe and protected from microaggressions, should be your starting point. Step Two: Show openness to hear the hard things Microaggressions typically come from a place of ignorance. In your newly created safe space, you will need to encourage open and candid conversations in which the aggressor and target can share their version of events. Predetermined scripts for each party can make this process much easier by including carefully worded statements like, “I don’t think you were aware of this, but what you said was offensive 84

to me, and I think you could have phrased it better in this way . . . .” Step Three: Ask the right questions When building a culture in which people can feel safe admitting they don’t know something, you have to show up as a real person, not someone who’s defensive or tr ying to show the best side of what’s happening. That doesn’t happen overnight, and it can only happen when there’s consistent practice. Step Four: Keep learning Whether intentional or not, microaggressions can cause a person or group long-lasting pain. A lack of awareness or understanding often prevents the aggressor from seeing and admitting their mistakes. Tackling the problem is a continuous learning process, as microaggressions will still

occur as people continue to learn. In addition, the process should be seen as an opportunity for the entire organization to learn about and celebrate our differences and unique perspectives, and break down communication barriers. Feeling psychologically safe to speak and work freely is crucial for ever y employee’s wellbeing and job satisfaction. A psychologically safe workplace goes hand in hand with showing concern and kindness for those we lead. People need to feel trusted, supported, and included in order to turn in their best work. The responsibility of fostering that kind of environment invariably falls to the caring leader, and indeed, ever y employee. Photo by Ashley Whitlatch on Unsplash.

GOOD DESIGN IS SOCIALLY AND ENVIRONMENTALLY JUST.

This year’s National Design Awards prove it By Nate Berg

With works ranging from self-shading windows to solar power for off-grid communities to the transformation of the concretelined Los Angeles River, the winners of the 2021 Cooper Hewitt National Design Awards are paragons of environmentally and socially conscious design. This year’s slate of nine winners includes designers across a range of disciplines, including architecture, industrial design, fashion, and communications. Given annually since 2000 by the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum in New York, the National Design Awards honor designers whose work elevates the field while demonstrating the positive power of good design. A common theme among this year’s winners is using design to address persistent energy and social justice challenges. BioLite HeadLamp Award winner BioLite is being honored for the affordably priced solar-powered lighting, cooking, and charging products it has been producing and distributing in off-grid communities across Africa and Asia. A social enterprise founded in 2009, the company is a previous winner of Fast Company’s Innovation By Design award, and has also branched out into a successful line of products for camping and off-grid living. Los Angeles River Los Angeles-based landscape architecture firm Studio-MLA, led by designer Mia Lehrer, has been deeply engaged in the city for decades. It spearheaded the development of a master plan for the city’s river, launching regional efforts to soften its concrete edges and reconnect it with residents. Ross Barney Architects, McDonald’s Global Flagship at Walt Disney World. Another woman-led design firm, Ross Barney Architects of Chicago, is being honored for its sensitive and socially-minded work on projects ranging from transit stations in Chicago to the replacement of the Oklahoma City Federal Building that was bombed in 1995. The firm’s recent transformation of a kitschy Chicago landmark known as the Rock ‘n Roll McDonald’s into a sleek and environmentally friendly flagship for the fast food giant has shown that even low-brow buildings can achieve high-minded goals. Architectural designer Doris Sung has specialized in applying thermally reactive pieces of thin metal to create dynamic and energy efficient architectural solutions. Her InVert Self-Shading Window uses thermal bimetal sheets embedded within a double-glazed window that physically bend in the sun to block heat during the height of the day, crating an energy-free way to control light and temperature inside buildings. 86

Paper Monuments Some winners are pioneering new approaches to socially conscious design. Bryan C. Lee, Jr., one of Fast Company’s Most Creative People in 2018, founded Colloqate Design in 2017 in New Orleans to engage communities in the planning and design process with the aim of dismantling systems of injustice. Cheryl D. Miller, a veteran Black graphic designer and theologian, is honored by Cooper Hewitt as this year’s Design Visionary for her decades balancing design work for corporate clients with longstanding advocacy for Black designers. Can the Subaltern Speak? Other honorees are pushing the boundaries of aesthetic design through novel uses of technology. Designer Behnaz Farahi is being recognized for her unique mix of architecture, interactive design, and fashion. The inaugural winner in 2016 of Fast Company’s Linda Tischler Award for up-and-coming designers, Farahi’s work ranges from garments that react to the gaze of onlookers to a 3D printed collar that senses and reacts to peoples’ emotions. Fashion

designer Becca McCharen-Tran is also being recognized for her wearable designs, particularly her futuristic swimwear designed for a wide range of body types. Lumina On the graphic design side, this year’s awards also honor Imaginary Forces, a motion design firm known for its work on title sequences for television series like Mad Men, Stranger Things and Boardwalk Empire. Stranger Things main title sequence Several of this year’s winners will be featured in virtual events and programs during the month of October. The winners were chosen from a pool of nominations submitted by the public, and juried by experts in design. This year’s jury includes Kofi Boone, a professor of landscape architecture at North Carolina State University; Grace Jun, an assistant professor of graphic design at University of Georgia; and Joe Gebbia, a co-founder of Airbnb. Nominations for next year’s awards are open now through December 6.

SECURE IT

Use these new iOS 15 privacy and security features right away By Michael Grothaus

The biggest recent news involving Apple and privacy may be that the company has paused its controversial move to scan users’ iPhones for images of child sexual abuse. Despite the severe backlash from privacy advocates, I think it’s fair to say that Apple is still tops among the tech giants when it comes to protecting user privacy. Since around 2018, Apple has introduced one privacy-preserving feature after another with each major release of an iOS. And with the release of iOS 15 and iPadOS 15–both available as free upgrades starting today—things are no different this year. Apple has packed the iPhone’s and iPad’s new operating systems with eight major privacy and security upgrades. Here’s what they are, why they matter, and how to use them. Hide your IP address when using Safari What it is: iOS 15 and iPadOS 15 features an improved Intelligent Tracking Prevention that stops websites and trackers from knowing your real IP address. Why it’s important: Every iPhone—like every other device with an internet connection– has a unique IP address. Sites and companies can use it to identify you and build a profile of your online activity. But now iOS 15 allows you to hide your real IP from the trackers that sites and advertisers use to identify you. How to enable it: Open Settings > Safari > Hide IP Address. Then tap Tracker Only. Alternately, you can tap Trackers and Websites if you have iCloud Plus (see below). Mail Privacy Protection What it is: It keeps your IP address and email actions private from senders who insert tracking pixels into their messages. Why it’s important: Tracking pixels are a tool advertisers use to monitor the way you interact with their emails. A tracking pixel is a remote, invisible image that calls back to the sender’s server when you open an email. It tells the sender exactly when you’ve opened it, your IP, your location, and more. Mail Privacy Protection blocks tracking pixels by automatically downloading all remote images the second you receive an email and also blocks your real IP and location from being known. This effectively makes tracking pixels useless, protecting your privacy. How to enable it: Go to Settings > Mail > Privacy Protection. Toggle the switch next to Protect Mail Privacy to ON (green). Also, toggle the switch next to Hide IP Address to On (green). App Privacy Report What it is: App Privacy Report shows you which apps have accessed your iPhone’s sensors and cameras in the past seven days, as well as what data the apps are accessing, and where they are sending that data. 90

Why it’s important: Many of us have dozens if not hundreds of apps on our iPhone. And many of those apps are accessing our cameras, photos, location, and microphones, not to mention sucking up other data about us and sending it back to third-party services and advertisers. The App Privacy Report will show you just what each app is accessing and the data it is collecting and sending off. This transparency helps to better inform you as to which apps you may want to delete. How to enable it: Go to Settings > Privacy > App Privacy Report. You can tap on any app listed to find out more about what data it is accessing and the network activity associated with the app. Hide your real email address (iCloud Plus) What it is: A feature of the iCloud Plus subscription service, this allows you to give websites a unique, random email address, which forwards messages received to your real email address.

Why it’s important: Giving a site a unique email address makes it harder to track you around the web via your email or identify who you are (many emails we use feature our full names). But Hide My Email also lets you quickly destroy any unique email you have used, meaning any messages sent to it never make it through to your real inbox. This lets you easily cut off spammy sites and accounts. How to enable it: You’ll need to subscribe to iCloud Plus if you want access to Hide My Email. If so, the feature will be activated by default, and the next time you create an account on the web in Safari or in an app, you’ll have the option of using your real email address or giving the site and app an automatically-generated random email address. You’ll also find this option built into the iPhone’s Mail app.

NETWORKING DOESN’T HAVE TO BE TERRIBLE

The secret trick that makes networking suck so much less By Justin Pot—Zapier

The idea of networking makes me cringe. Here’s the thing, though: I actually love connecting with people, and that enthusiasm works out for me professionally. I was referred to this job at Zapier because of a friend I made on Twitter, and the job before this was the same way. That’s networking. Now, I didn’t reach out because I wanted a job. I reached out because I thought the people in question were interesting and doing admirable work. I wanted to talk with them…so I did. Connecting with people on those terms doesn’t feel cringey to me because it isn’t. It’s human. People are more important than your career, but that doesn’t mean your career doesn’t matter. So if you struggle with networking, don’t make connections—make friends. Actual, human friends. How to connect with people online without being a creep I’m a writer. My background is in technology journalism, mostly on the ser vice journalism side, and Twitter is the main place I connect with other writers. I follow writers I admire, occasionally respond to their messages, and become close with them over time. We help each other find work. If someone’s in town, we’ll hang out. It’s nice. Connecting with people improves your life, but it’s hard, especially online. If you don’t know how to start, you might think that you’re being a huge creep. You’re not. I’ve written about how to small talk while working remotely, and the general principles are the same on just about any social network. Here are a few tips: Compliment people’s work. Ver y few people take the time to reach out when they like one of my articles, and the people who do make my day. I bet it’s the same in most industries. If you admire what someone does, tell them. It’s not weird—it’s the best. Just don’t be transactional about it. Don’t compliment people’s appearance. In the immortal words of the best account on Twitter: THIS ???? IS ???? NOT ???? A ???? DATING ???? SITE ????. Seriously, though—compliment people on the things they do and create, not their physical attributes. The first thing is kind; the second is bordering on illegal. This is not particularly complicated. Respond to questions. People post questions on social networks because they want to start a conversation. Take that opening, say something insightful, and follow up if the conversation starts flowing.

92

Don’t insert yourself into conversations. Sometimes a stranger will follow me on Twitter and immediately join a conversation between me and one of my friends (who they also don’t know). This is uncomfortable—don’t do it. Get to know one person, or ideally both people, before inserting yourself into conversations. Be funny. Humor is the single greatest tool for connecting with others. If you spot an opportunity to be funny and think the person would enjoy it based on what you’ve learned about them, go for it. But don’t someone’s funny. Lurk have a feel

force humor. If you don’t know vibe, you don’t know what they find for a while, then respond when you for their sense of humor.

Bring up interesting information. Knowledge is cool, links to read are great, and sharing it makes the internet a better place. If someone shares something interesting, share something

similar you think they’ll like. That way there’s more interesting stuff, which is great. Don’t argue with people you barely know. Rule: if you have the urge to begin a message with “Well, actually,” consider instead throwing your phone into a volcano. You might love arguing… that’s great. Not ever yone does, and the internet is exhausting enough. Don’t tr y to connect with someone by telling them they’re wrong—it doesn’t work. In summary: try to be a good hang. If you add to the conversation and make using the internet better, people will like having you around online. If you make life worse, they won’t. Over time, you’ll find yourself in online friendships, which are actually just friendships. Connect with people, then connect them to each other

The furniture designer already offers customers full customization services, as their vision has always been “design without restriction” and they are committed to creating exactly what you dream up. You can see the hundreds of wood samples before you even decide on what you want. You never know, you might be moved by a particular grain of wood, or its vibrant quality of finishing to imagine an entirely new piece for your home. There are so many different options of available wood, styles, colors, paneling, hardware and so much more. Having all of these choices will not overwhelm you either, because AllWood Design has trained and expert designers who will help guide you to finding the perfect piece that will work for your space. Not only can they make suggestions but they will create a threedimensional model based on your choices that will make it easy for you to visualize everything without having to imagine or guess how it would look like. 94

Whether you are an iPhone or Android user, you can play music, listen to podcasts or even stream the audio from a movie to the different outputs. It redefines the idea of being surrounded by sound. Imagine being able to ask Siri to play a guided meditation before bedtime or a fun playlist so you can have a dance party in the kitchen while you cook dinner, all without having to touch your phone.

Automating the little things in life really does make things easier. You can also have motion activated lighting sensors installed in your walls, closets or furniture, so that the lights go on and off as people move in or out of the room. It is an effective and easy way to save on electricity, and conserve energy because you care about climate change, and just generally feel powerful and important because the lights just follow you around your home. Some modifications offered by AllWood Design are more about accessibility. An impressive example includes the sliding doors that open with hand-activated gestures. No more pulling or lifting heavy doors, just wave and they will open for you. This is a perfect solution for people who might be having mobility issues but would still like to retain their sense of autonomy and agency. And at a time where home hygiene is a growing concern for many families, this contactless solution would make for an amazing option in busier commercial spaces. There is also a wide range of these customizable, built-in design solutions, from rotating shelves and easy access closet hanging

systems that allow people to reach hard to access areas without having to get up on chairs or bend over. BRAIN FOOD

5 diet tips to help you succeed at work, according to a Harvard-trained psychiatrist By Uma Naidoo

With many of us returning to in-person work, it is important to take advantage of the various ways in which we can ease this transition and achieve workplace excellence in new environments. Nutrition has a tremendous power for maximizing focus, productivity and brain power in the workplace and provides tangible means for individuals to support their own professional performance. The following nutritional psychiatry tips can help you take advantage of the many brain-boosting benefits of food for maximizing performance and stamina in the workplace.

Fill your plate with colorful fruits and veggies Fiber-rich plant foods are packed with antioxidants, polyphenols, flavanols, vitamins, and minerals that help reduce inflammation in the brain and resist the effects of oxidative stress. Such foods can help improve focus, reduce fatigue, and enhance cognition for optimal performance. Think about gamifying this for yourself, family, and friends to see how many new colors you can add in a day or a week to enhance biodiversity in your diet, which has been linked to improved gut health. Cook with herbs and spices Cooking with herbs and spices adds an array of brain-boosting molecules to food. For example, when we add turmeric with a pinch of black pepper to cooking, the curcumin has potent anti-inflammatory properties and acts as an antioxidant, supporting positive moods and brain function, and helping to clear any brain fog that may be impairing workplace excellence. It’s also easy to add a teaspoon of turmeric and black pepper to a tea, soup, or smoothie. (Try my moodboosting golden milk recipe to start.) 96

Follow your “body intelligence” on caffeine and alcohol Many of us utilize caffeine to help power up in the morning and throughout the day and then wind down at evening with wine or cocktails. While both caffeine and alcohol have been shown to have health benefits when consumed in moderation, their effects are also highly specific to each individual and their microbiome. This is where I suggest tapping into one’s body intelligence—think IQ or EQ, but geared around body awareness—one of the pillars of nutritional psychiatry. Pay close attention to whether or not caffeine helps you improve focus or is overly stimulating and causes distracting jitteriness. Similarly, recognize if after a few evening beverages you toss and turn all night and wake up feeling poorly rested. These symptoms can guide you to potentially adjust consumption to resist any negative impact on mental health and work productivity. Stay hydrated Remaining properly hydrated is key for optimal brain health and function. Many symptoms of poor mental health and cognitive function that may impact workplace excellence are tied to dehydration. Sipping

on water throughout the day and including hydrating fruits and vegetables in the diet, such as cucumbers and lettuce, help maintain hydration levels and work performance. Keep a stainless steel or glass water bottle on your work desk and remember to refill it a few times every day or set a reminder on your phone to sip. Dehydration can worsen or even precipitate anxiety and staying hydrated is associated with decreased depression and anxiety. Snack on nutrient-dense brain foods When hunger strikes between meals during the workday or when in need of a pick-me-up, opt for brain foods that will help you cognitively keep your mind sharp. Another tip is that hunger and thirst signals can sometimes be confused, so sip on some hydrating water to overcome hunger pangs until you can reach out for a healthy snack. Some of my favorite focus-enhancing snacks are a small square of extra-dark natural chocolate, a handful of walnuts, or berries, all of which contain fiber, antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals for enhancing brain power.

THE POWER OF WALKING

What if walking around on your wood floors powered your home? By Kristin Toussaint

In a video from Swiss researchers, someone steps repeatedly on a small square of wood flooring that is wired to a lightbulb, and with every step, the light bulb flickers on. Just by walking on the wood flooring, the person has generated electricity.

This works through something called the triboelectric effect, which is a way to generate electricity by transferring electrons from one material to another, usually because of the way those materials rub together (think static electricity). Though using this effect isn’t completely new— triboelectric nanogenerators have been used before in flooring and even wearable fabric—the researchers, from the Wood Materials Science Laborator y at the ETH Zürich university and the Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology in Dübendor f, were able to actually make their generator out of wood, using a sustainable material that could become part of smart buildings of the future. The researchers published their work on their nanogenerator in the journal Matter. Most triboelectric nanogenerators use synthetic materials— like teflon or silicone— to conduct their electricity; these are called “triboactive” materials. Wood isn’t a great material for this because it’s basically neutral—it neither attracts nor loses electrons. A triboelectric nanogenerator needs to use one material that 104

does each, in order to generate a charge. To get around this, the researchers changed the wood’s triboelectric properties, coating one piece with a silicone and the other with nanocr ystals called ZIF-8, which includes metal ions and organic molecules. They tested different woods and even different cuts of wood, because the direction the wood is cut had an effect on that electricity generation; radially cut spruce per formed the best. Since they used wood as a “scaffold” to host those triboactive materials, they could use less of those synthetic materials, says Guido Panzarasa, senior author of the study and group leader in the Wood Materials Science Laborator y. “Not only did we actually gain insight on the role that wood can have in a triboelectric generator, we also made a nanogenerator which is really made mostly of wood,” he says, compared to previous nanogenerators for which those other, synthetic materials make up a higher content. This research is still early. The prototype they made, which was smaller than a piece of paper, was able to generate enough electricity to

power an LED lamps and small electronics like a calculator, but it’s difficult to estimate how much energy an office floor full of this material could generate, Panzarasa says, because so many factors come into play—how many people are walking on it, for example, and how often, the size of the space, and so on. Next, Panzarasa and his team are looking to find more ecofriendly coatings for the wood and make these nanogenerators easier to scale to an industrial level. “The idea is that by being able to transform a material which is at the same time natural, renewable, sustainable, and CO2-storing…to equip such a material with the ability to generate electricity just being walked upon, then this of course could be—without sacrificing its positive properties and especially its sustainability—a groundbreaking technology in terms of increasing the energy efficiency of buildings,” he says. “

CLEAN ENERGY BOATING WITH EPROPULSION

New Generation Mobility is making boating more eco-friendly in Kuwait By bazaar staff

Everyone loves a good boat trip. Out on the open water, the fresh breeze and the waves bopping you along. It is one of the only few places left where you can still connect with nature without having to deal with pollution or noise. Whether you are into watersports like sailing or a fishing enthusiast, the sea is a haven where you can forget all about your worries. Unfortunately, the seas and oceans have been witnessing rising levels of water and air pollution because of the boats that use fossil fuels.

106

Fortunately, there is now a zero-carbon emission option. Kuwait’s first all-electric motorsport/watersport dealership, New Generation Mobility (NGM) is bringing electric outboard motors to Kuwait made by manufacturer ePropulsion. The motors have a really exciting new feature called ‘hydrogenation’, which is the motor’s ability to act as a generator when towed in the water which actually charges the battery. NGM has been building a culture in Kuwait that invites everyone to enjoy life on the sea without destroying the environment. The ePropulsion outboard motors are intuitive and easy to use, additionally they’re also quiet and require no maintenance on your side. With the pleasant weather now upon us, it is the perfect opportunity to get out on the water, but with a more sustainable approach in mind. What’s also really special about these motors is the sound factor. ePropulsion electric outboard motors are super quiet, meaning that those fishing trips that you spend a lot of time planning with your friends are all the more successful because you won’t be spooking out the fish with a loud boat motor. The company has three motors currently on offer; The Spirit Evo 1.0, The Navy 3.0 (6 hp) and the Navy 6.0 (9.9 hp). The Spirit Evo 1.0 boasts a 3hp engine. It is portable and is made for dinghies, fishing boats, smaller sailboats and tenders. It features a 1276Wh large integrated lithium battery for long range trips. It’s nimble, lightweight, and offers clean power to take you wherever you need to go. Once you are done, you can quickly remove it from the boat and stow it away in your car. There are two models available from the Navy Series. The motors are bigger, more powerful and more suited for larger boats, perfect for longer trips for this boating season! Considered as the backbone of ePropulsion electric outboard motors, the Navy Series is highly popular and perfect for local boating enthusiasts. The motors can be mounted on aluminum fishing boats, dinghies, daysailers and cruising sailboats, suitable for saltwater and freshwater. Thanks to the more efficient direct-drive technology which doesn’t require the use of any gears or belts to convert energy into motion, the Navy electric outboard boat motor is quiet, maintenancefree, and reliable. Lucky for you, NGM offers two different versions; a 6hp and a 9.9hp motor, so you can choose the one that works better for your boating requirements. ePropulsion motors are also intuitive and easy to use. All motor models come fitted with a digital display that offers real-time monitoring of the power usage, remaining runtime, battery levels, voltage, and much more so you can make the right adjustments based on the requirements of your trip. Press the Start button and you’re ready to go which saves you the trouble of pulling the cord to start. The magnetic kill switch works

as an emergency stop key for ePropulsion electric outboards so you know that you will be safe on the boat. The Max Power Output is adjustable so ePropulsion electric boat motors are kid-friendly and suitable for rental boats. You can also turn the throttle easily from either the left-hand or right-hand side so you can manage it whether you are right-handed or left-handed. The oceans and seas are not just our playground, they are home to many other species and living organisms and we need to be respectful of that. Switching to an ePropulsion motor means

that we can enjoy our time out on the water without ruining the beautiful Arabian Gulf so sea life and future generations can too.

OCTOBER MUSIC

Perhaps we need something to distract ourselves from the really scary thoughts we may be mulling over around variant pandemic viruses, the thought of loved ones developing the other big “C” - because while coronavirus wiped the word cancer off the headlines, cancer is still a big concern, or perhaps we’re even reexamining where and how we’re going to live and making bold life decisions. Halloween as a holiday can be the greatest of distractions. It’s time to carve out some pumpkins and stick them in your window. Go and buy tons of candy and tell yourself it’s for trick-or-treaters, even though that doesn’t really happen here too much. Who wants to get caught without candy when there is even the slightest possibility that there could be trick-or-treaters at the door? Now that would be a horror!

DID YOU HEAR SOMETHING?

Artist: Full of Hell Title: Garden of Burning Apparition Album: October 1st

Artist: Ian Miles Title: Degradation, Death, Decay Album: October 22nd

Artist: Mastodon Title: Hushed and Grim Album: October 29th

The first single that Maryland grindcore monsters Full of Hell shared from their fifth studio album Garden of Burning Apparition was titled “Industrial Messiah Complex.” Lead vocalist Dylan Walker said of the track, “Industrial Messiah Complex examines the commodification and weaponization of faith and spirituality. This misdirection is a ploy for control and power. Whether through some profit obsessed mega-church or via militaristic action, humanity is raked over the coals and bled out until there’s nothing left but cinders and dust.” There are a further eleven tracks to explore this theme.

This is the debut solo LP for UK punk band Creeper’s guitarist Ian Miles. Inspired by the performance art of the 70s and Halloween – his debut is as much art-horror project as it is an album and takes the visual legacies of Robert Rauschenberg and Serbian film-maker Marina Abramovic whilst musically drawing on bands such as Conor Oberst, Leonard Cohen, R.E.M and The Cure. Miles says, “It’s taken me that long to build up the confidence to actually put it out there and mentally prepare myself for the prospect of playing shows…it’s so rewarding to make something out of nothing.”

Last year, Mastodon wrote and recorded a new song called «Rufus Lives» for inclusion in the latest «Bill & Ted Face The Music” movie. This year sees the release of their first work since the death of long-time manager Nick John, and the Atlanta progressive metallers revealed that the cover artwork for this new album was partly inspired by Nick, whose face you can see in the tree. The album was produced by David Bottrill and features contributions from Soundgarden guitarist Kim Thayil. Mastodon’s ninth studio album has been described as described as the band’s “most ambitious body of work to date.”

RUN, AND DON’T LOOK BACK!

Artist: Bobby Pickett Title: Monster Mash Single: October 1962 Originally released in 1962, Monster Mash was created by American entertainer Bobby Pickett as a fun but spooky response to The Mashed Potato dance craze, popular in the US and around the world at the time. The single was a smash hit, entering at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the US (Re-charting in 1970 and 1973). In the UK it was initially banned for radio play by the BBC on the grounds it was “Too morbid” but over a decade after its original release, it went to #3 in the UK singles chart in 1973, re-entered the charts again in 2008, and remains a popular Halloween ditty every year.

Artist: Richard O’brien/Various Artists – Title: The Rocky Horror Picture Show – Original Soundtrack Album: released October 1975

Artist: Scientist Title: Scientist Rids The World Of The Evil Curse Of The Vampires Album: released October 1981

Why it’s one of the best records out there: What could possibly be any better than Tim Curry and Susan Sarandon, still a power couple to this day, singing some of the campiest songs to ever appear in a musical (and that’s really saying something). ‘The Rocky Horror Picture Show’ remains a timeless soundtrack for not only the musical/film, but Halloween itself. Even if the less progressive attitudes of O’Brien and the questionable ageing of particular tracks leaves a bad taste by today’s standards. Stand-out tracks: ‘Time Warp’, ‘Dammit Janet’, ‘Hot Patootie – Bless My Soul’ & ‘I’m Going Home’.

A beloved album at Halloween: ‘Scientist Rids The World Of The Evil Curse Of The Vampires’ blends reverb, precise rhythms and wonky effects to create a titan of a dub record. ‘Scientist…’ is light on the terror and heavy on luminous, bubbly melodies and slow-burning sounds. Rather than releasing a standard catalogue of remixes, Scientist precisely and methodically re-worked each track to create inventive basslines. This one is for a more chilledout All Hallow’s Eve. The iconic album cover is to die for. Stand-out tracks: ‘Dance Of The Vampires’, ‘The Mummy’s Shroud’ & ‘Night Of The Living Dead’.

Sintoho Restaurant Folia, meaning “from the leaves” in Latin, was developed exclusively for Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts, and is the product of a partnership between internationally acclaimed chef Matthew Kenney and HRH Prince Khaled bin Alwaleed bin Talal Al Saud’s KBW Ventures. Folia’s mission is to carry a vibrancy of flavor-profile and presentation to the plate using plant-based ingredients for starters, mains, and desserts courses. Dai Forni’s unwavering commitment to delivering “true-to-concept” Italian fine-dining carries through with its stellar arrangement of plant-based options under the Folia menu

partnership. Chef Kenney presents an authentically Sicilian ‘Eggplant Caponata’ with raisins, pine nuts and capers as one example of starter. A well-balanced range of main courses includes ‘Cauliflower Pizzaola’, bursting with flavour courtesy of charred cauliflower, roasted chickpeas and pizzaola sauce made with the freshest vine-fresh tomatoes, herbs and extra virgin olive oil. Sintoho has steadily developed renown amongst Kuwait’s sophisticated dining scene, becoming the go-to spot for a feast of Asian flavors in the most convivial of surroundings

at its 21st floor rooftop location. Folia conveys the spirit of Sintoho’s concept through menu offerings like ‘Spicy Soba Noodles’, which bursts with flavours and balance, skilfully utilising young papaya and a peanut sauce in the recipe. And Folia contributes to an already impressive array of Sintoho desserts with examples such as ‘Raw Banana Cream Pie’ with coconut cream. art and wellness space both in the United States and internationally. Kuwait City becomes the latest destination to offer Kenney’s Folia menu and follows successful roll-outs at Four Seasons properties in Los Angeles, Dubai and Bahrain. And the partnership has delighted the Hotel’s General Manager, Didier Jardin. A veteran hospitality professional who himself began his career journey within the culinary domain, Jardin is all too aware of the need to evolve the offerings of the restaurants under his guardianship at Four Seasons Hotel Kuwait. “I am excited to be launching these outstanding plant-based menus because it sends such a positive signal to our much-valued diners,” says Jardin, who has been the General Manager of the property since its opening in 2017. “We have the privileged position of operating restaurants in a part of the world where our clientele is sophisticated and very aware of new trends in the dining industry, so it gives me great pride knowing that we are evolving our product to meet changing needs of our much-valued guests,” he explains. “KBW Ventures is thrilled to see Folia so heartily welcomed by Four Seasons Hotel Kuwait, after the menu’s warm reception in neighboring UAE and Bahrain,” said HRH Prince Khaled bin Alwaleed bin Talal Al Saud, founder and CEO of KBW Ventures, remarking on the launch. “The fourth Four Seasons property to present Folia, I’m especially pleased to see another GCC country partner up to present this delicious and healthy dining experience. Folia allows guests to choose the highest quality options in mindful dining out; we’re looking forward to seeing the social media activity from people in Kuwait City experiencing flavorful and hearty plant-based cuisine created by Chef Kenney,” Prince Khaled added. “The Folia concept for Four Seasons is an incredibly exciting moment in the transition to a more sustainable future,” said Matthew Kenney of Folia’s presentation at the Four Seasons Hotel Kuwait. “Creating menus that are seamlessly interwoven into the fine-dining that already exists at the property is a project that we enjoy, and to be working with the team in Kuwait is a dream come true,” Chef Kenney concluded. Supporting the launch of Folia’s newest home at Four Seasons Hotel Kuwait will be an array of opportunities to engage the city’s knowledgeable dining community in experiencing the Folia menu with fun and interactive events in the coming weeks and months.

LAST GIRL GHOSTED

After a tumultuous period in American politics, a new administration has just been sworn in, and to everyone’s surprise the president chooses a political enemy for the vital position of secretary of state. There is no love lost between the president of the United States and Ellen Adams, his new secretary of state. But it’s a canny move on the part of the president. With this appointment, he silences one of his harshest critics, since taking the job means Adams must step down as head of her multinational media conglomerate. As the new president addresses Congress for the first time, with Secretary Adams in attendance, Anahita Dahir, a young foreign service officer (FSO) on the Pakistan desk at the State Department, receives a baffling text from an anonymous source. Too late, she realizes the message was a hastily coded warning. What begins as a series of apparent terrorist attacks is revealed to be the beginning of an international chess game involving the volatile and Byzantine politics of Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Iran.

THE LINCOLN HIGHWAY

By Lisa Unger, Mystery

By Amor Towles, Historical Fiction

She met him through a dating app. An intriguing picture on a screen, a date at a downtown bar. What she thought might be just a quick hookup quickly became much more. She fell for him—hard. It happens sometimes, a powerful connection with a perfect stranger takes you by surprise. Could it be love? But then, just as things were getting real, he stood her up. Then he disappeared—profiles deleted, phone disconnected. She was ghosted. Maybe it was her fault. She shared too much, too fast. But isn’t that always what women think—that they’re the ones to blame? Soon she learns there were others. Girls who thought they were in love. Girls who later went missing. She had been looking for a connection, but now she’s looking for answers. Chasing a digital trail into his dark past—and hers—she finds herself on a dangerous hunt.

In June, 1954, eighteen-year-old Emmett Watson is driven home to Nebraska by the warden of the work farm where he has just served a year for involuntary manslaughter. His mother long gone, his father recently deceased, and the family farm foreclosed upon by the bank, Emmett’s intention is to pick up his eightyear-old brother and head west where they can start their lives anew. But when the warden drives away, Emmett discovers that two friends from the work farm have hidden themselves in the trunk of the warden’s car. Together, they have hatched an altogether different plan for Emmett’s future. Spanning just ten days and told from multiple points of view, Towles’s third novel will satisfy fans of his multi-layered literary styling while providing them an array of new and richly imagined settings, characters, and themes. THE QUEST FOR

FALL-OFF-THE-BONE RIBS IS OVER

Discover the best ribs in town at Texas Roadhouse By bazaar staff

Satisfying your craving for really good ribs can be a very challenging experience. Especially when you’re seeking mouthwatering, tender, fall-off-the-bone ribs. So, you begin the search by sending WhatsApp messages to friends and family en masse asking for their suggestions, only to be gravely disappointed by severely dry ribs, or an overpowering sauce that takes away from the flavor of the meat. We’ve all been there, and it’s no fun. Fortunately for us, the search for the best ribs in town stops at Texas Roadhouse, as the meat experts have perfected their ribs offerings to give you that elusive feeling of joy you only experience when you begin to pull apart tender pieces of ribs off the bone with your fork. The award-winning ribs at Texas Roadhouse are so incredibly delicious, that once you’ve tasted them, you simply have to keep coming back for more. 120

Texas Roadhouse’s Culinary Operations Manager, Chef Brandon Everett The experts at Texas Roadhouse believe in the power of uncompromising practices to tantalize your palate with the tenderest ribs and most delicious steaks, every single time you place your order. Culinary Operations Manager Chef Brandon Everett, who has been with Texas Roadhouse for 19 years and counting, considers the brand’s dedication to tried-and-tested processes as the key to achieving award-winning tender, fall-off the bone ribs that the brand is now renowned for. Texas Roadhouse follows a clear, no-frills method to give you an experience that is closest to dining at any Texas Roadhouse restaurant in the States. “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it,” the wellseasoned chef laughingly starts us off, “But in reality, our processes are pretty involved, with a clear focus on consistency, quality and service.” And while that statement might be simple enough, the work that goes into making sure that each and every dining experience across more than 450 restaurants in the US and 15 locations in the GCC, is very consistent, precise and requires a high level of attention to detail. This goes beyond the transcendent feeling you get as soon as you’re greeted by the friendly staff at the restaurant. From the country music, to the rustic style interiors, you immediately feel as if you’re in the heart of Texas, and the food has to emulate this authentic ambience. Chef Brandon also tells us that with Kuwait’s highly sophisticated and well-

travelled clientele, he knows that expectations are very high—those ribs must fall off the bone so easily, you won’t even need a knife. Achieving an unforgettable ribs experience at Texas Roadhouse comes down to various factors, such as how the ribs are selected and hand-cut to ensure that each rib has a substantial amount of meat on the bone. Hand-cutting the beef, versus using a machine, makes for a smoother and a more consistent piece of beef. “It’s the Texas Roadhouse way,” says Chef Brandon, “When we claim that our ribs fall off the bone, it’s not just about ensuring that the beef is tender. It needs to be fresh, moist, and the experience must deliver on both the right flavors and textures.” Getting the flavor right begins with the quality of the beef that is selected. At Texas Roadhouse, all of the beef is imported from the US, is USDAcertified and grain finished for 120 days. This produces a very high-quality meat, which improves and changes the flavor profile of the beef. This is especially important when it comes to cooking ribs, as you can really taste the difference in terms of flavor and texture. Maintaining the same, reliable supplier throughout the years has proved to be a worthwhile investment for Texas Roadhouse, and this wise decision has shaped the consistent customer experience that we’ve come to love and look forward to at each Texas Roadhouse restaurant anywhere in the world. Chef

Brandon reiterates that it is Texas Roadhouse’s commitment to offering the best quality beef which differentiates the ribs experience from all of the other competitors in the market. “You can’t make a bad quality product taste great at the end of the cooking process. We believe that the quality of the beef is the most important factor to give you that same amazing piece of steak or ribs, every single time.” says Chef Brandon. Ribs are also difficult to cook correctly, Chef Brandon tells us, “The right way is, of course, the Texas Roadhouse way.” The ribs are firstly hand-cut by the team, where they follow detailed instructions for trimming the beef, seasoning it, and then searing it so that the meat is beautifully caramelized on the outside. This is done to lock in the delectable flavor profile of the high-quality rib meat. The restaurant follows a ‘low and slow’ cooking process for more than four hours, as achieving perfectly tender ribs is not a process that is to be rushed. There are, of course, many other “trade secrets” which Chef Brandon had to leave out. These are the hidden details that make the ribs at Texas Roadhouse simply inimitable. All of these processes are constantly being screened by scheduled quality checks to ensure that the ribs are cooked perfectly, every single time. It goes without saying, though, that the perfect ribs require the perfect barbecue sauce. The sauce needs to be expertly balanced, delivering on the [Continued...]

right mix of tartness, sweetness and depth of flavor. Above all, the barbecue sauce must never overpower the flavor of the ribs, and that the entire rib-to-barbecue sauce ratio has to be just right. “The experience has to come together effortlessly,” Says Chef Brandon, “Once you have the right quality beef, a preparation that meets our standards, and a cooking process which is correctly applied, combined with the right barbecue sauce, it all comes together beautifully.” At Texas Roadhouse, the ribs barbecue sauce recipe has been specifically developed for the ribs dish, and you won’t find it anywhere else. The recipe hasn’t changed since its inception, and it is a closely guarded secret. Chef Brandon tells us that loyal customers even ask for the barbecue sauce to-go after they’ve finished dining. It’s that good! 122

We personally cannot recollect a Texas Roadhouse ribs experience without asking for more barbecue sauce on the side, as its flavor elevates an already incredible offering. At Texas Roadhouse, you can get your ribs craving satisfied by opting for the full portion dish of two massive ribs, boldly plated and waiting for you to simply pull apart the tender beef with your fork. Fancy a steak and ribs? Then get the best of both worlds by choosing the Ribeye Steak and Rib Combo plate. You can’t really go wrong here, except that you have to order the perfect sides to complement your experience. The sides at Texas Roadhouse are a serious affair. They are always made from scratch, and range from coleslaw, steak fries, a cup of chili or tortilla soup, house or Caesar salad, baked or mashed potato, buttered corn, or

fresh, steamed vegetables. Whether you opt for the buttered, baked potato with bacon and sour cream, or mashed potatoes with a delicious garlic and black pepper gravy to go with your ribs, you can rest assured that you will be enjoying the fluffiest Idaho potatoes that are imported from the US with love. Our favorite bazaar hack, however, is doubling up on Texas Roadhouse’s famous bread rolls, which are baked from scratch every five minutes, and topping it off with the incredible barbecue-smeared ribs. Texas Roadhouse is located in Grand Avenue- The Avenues (2228 3117), Sidra Complex in Mahboula (2208 1302) and Arabian Gulf Street- Bneid Al Gar (2221 4896). REDISCOVERING SEAFOOD WITH OCEAN’S PRIDE

Out-of-the-box ideas, recipes and tips to enjoy heart-healthy seafood at home By bazaar staff

Last month we introduced everyone to our new obsession, the frozen seafood brand, Ocean’s Pride. Since then we’ve been adding more seafood dishes to our weekly rotation. Not only have meal times become more fun and nutritious, we are also experimenting with new dishes and rediscovering old ones that can be modified. Being able to quickly grab some shrimp or salmon from the freezer has saved us time, money and the mental anguish of trying to think of fun lunch or dinner ideas.

Roasted Salmon with Za’atar & Sumac

Salmon Machboos

If you are new to dealing with frozen food then it is a good idea to give you a quick primer. There are two main ways to thaw it out. If you have planned ahead you can leave the food in the fridge to defrost for 24 hours. Leave it in its packaging to avoid contamination. If you don’t have that kind of time then put the frozen item in a leak proof bag and submerge it in cold tap water, change the water every thirty minutes until the food has defrosted. Make sure that you don’t use hot water because it might cause bacteria to cook. You are going to cook the seafood immediately if you use this method but can wait an extra day if you defrost using the fridge. We asked our friends at Alyasra Foods for some recommendations for using Ocean’s Pride and they delivered! Ocean’s Pride’s instagram account also has lots of amazing recipes so be sure to check it out. Their first suggestion was using salmon. It is one of the easiest fish to start with because it can be cooked in so many different ways. Grill it with some veggies and mash or pan fry it with some lemon butter. You can even use it to make a trendy Poke Bowl at home. Better yet, make everyone’s favorite machboos a little different by using salmon instead of the traditional choice of beef or chicken! Salmon’s buttery, flaky texture means it absorbs flavor really well as well as stands on its own without much help. There are so many fun and exciting ways to cook salmon, from Roasted Salmon with Zaatar and Sumac or the Salmon Machboos, it is a modern take on the classic and popular local dish. You just need to prepare a marinade to coat the salmon and pan fry it. The rice is more or less prepared as normal. If you are looking for a family-pleaser, then try shrimp. With so many different options, you are definitely spoiled for choice. Shrimp is a chameleon when it comes to food and can easily fit into almost any dish. From a traditional shrimp Sayadieyyeh to more daring shrimp tacos, and dynamite shrimp to a spicy green curry shrimp. You can grill them, bake them, deep fry them or add them to a creamy pasta sauce. We think the Momawash Robyan is the perfect hearty dish for the beginning of Fall. It only needs 30 minutes of prep time and cooks unattended for about an hour. It is a one-pot meal so it is perfect for a weeknight dinner If you are looking for a fish that works perfectly with our local cuisine and recipes, then look no further than the Zubaidi, also known as pomfret. It is low in calories and high protein as well as being an excellent source of fish oil that supports brain development in kids as well as a myriad of health benefits. If you struggle with anemia or are trying to make sure you are getting enough iron through your diet naturally, then reach for the Zubaidi. And for those of us who want younger looking skin, Zubaidi is rich in vitamin D. We love using it in a tandoori, machboos, with Mashkhool rice or keeping it old school by serving up a Mutabaq dish.

MAX MARA SPRING SUMMER 2022 Max Mara imagines a writer; a smart, sulky, Beat Generation intellectuelle tapping out the story of a long hot summer on an old school typewriter. It’s a sophisticated account of romance, intrigue, moral conundrum and elegant ennui, played out against a background of smart villas, secluded beaches, fast cars, boats, chic restaurants and casinos. Françoise Quoirez was just such a writer. An ungovernable teenager, a devotee of Proust, Stendhal, Gide and Camus, she was twice expelled from school (once for hanging a bust of Molière). At seventeen, having failed her baccalauréat, she was forced to forego the habitual family summer holiday in order to stay home and study. Deprived of the reality of those long, lazy, months at the comfortable house on the beach, she adopted a philosophical approach: she went there in her head. Under the nom de plume Françoise Sagan, her imaginary summer materialized as ‘Bonjour Tristesse’, the literary masterpiece which rocked the societal status quo. The story’s protagonist, Cécile, gets to enjoy all the hedonistic and glamorous pastimes that the author would have lived out on a real vacation, and finds there’s plenty of time left over for self-analysis. Max Mara dissects the sartorial persona of a Cécile de nos jours: the bourgeois rebel. Sagan’s own style, easy beatnik chic, points to workwear classics; the fisherman’s smock, the labourer’s jacket, the mechanic’s overalls and carpenter pants are reimagined with prêt-à-porter finesse. In crisp gabardine, canvas, impeccable poplin and boxfresh denim, they feature precise contrast top stitching. Tank tops and boyish sandals with chunky crêpe soles complete the bad girl look; chiffon embroidered with wispy feathers is a diaphanous counterpoint. The color palette runs from sand to tan, to navy to black, but there are pops of orange and yellow too. For Max Mara’s latest, check out @Maxmara on Instagram and social media.

ARIES MAR 20 – APR 19 Be careful in your enthusiasm not to become ruthless – people one treads on on the way up notoriously fail to be helpful when you’re on the way down! Take time out occasionally to consider how things are going within the family circle, especially between you and your partner. If you want or need to make changes, this will be an excellent time at which to do so – though you should wait until after the 20th to take action.

TAURUS APR 20 – MAY 20 You may have made some special plans in the middle of last year which in some way have failed to materialize. Only you, and perhaps your family and friends, will know about this. You, and they, may be in for some relief at last, for Jupiter is now settling down in your own sign – and as a result, things should begin to settle into place so that you will be able at last to press on with your ideas. Don’t waste a moment of this excellent influence.

LIBRA SEP 23 – OCT 22

Avoid rich food as much as possible – your digestion will be particularly vulnerable to acidity and other disturbances until then, and while abstinence may be boring, at least you won’t be likely to groan too much when you set foot on your bathroom scales. If you can confine fasting with treatment to lower the toxins in your system, you’ll feel an enormous benefit by the end of the month.

SCORPIO OCT 23 – NOV 22

GEMINI MAY 21 – JUN 21 You tend from time to time to make silly, careless errors which dog your progress, and you’ll be prone to that kind of thing this month; so take some deep breaths, relax, and above all take your time. Carelessness and failure to concentrate can really be a major problem for you, and one that’s difficult to fight. There is far less need to go rushing about than you think.

CANCER JUN 22 – JUL 22

An older relative or maybe a business partner – at any rate an authority figure of some kind – will be important to you this month, and you will do well to listen to any proffered advice, and carefully consider it. The result of any plans you make now will take time to materialize, but will prove tremendously worthwhile in time; so be patient.

Not a lot of time for your favorite activities, this month – demands on your time will come from family, friends, or workmates, and your schedule won’t have much spare room in it. However, the claims others make on you will, on the whole, be enjoyable to fulfill, and you won’t mind too much if you have to shave some time off your regular commitments in order to fulfill them.

SAGITTARIUS NOV 23 - DEC 21

LEO JUL 23 – AUG 22

You’re among the enthusiasts who never seem to be still, and this is a particularly good time for recharging your batteries. So relax as much as you can this month – at home with a good book, if possible! Later, you can allow yourself to slip back into top gear and be totally Sagittarian again, the sparkle back in your eyes, ready to take on all comers in every area of your busy daily and emotional life.

You’ll have the chance to invest, in one way or another, and whether you invest time or money the resulting profit will be enjoyable as well as probably fruitful. A certain amount of mental dizziness could hit you, however, so try to keep at least part of one foot on the ground – especially if you spot something you want to buy (whether it’s an antique or something for the home which seems likely to be useful).

CAPRICORN DEC 22 – JAN 19

VIRGO AUG 23 – SEP 22

You are not usually indecisive, but this month may uncharacteristically find it difficult to make up your mind. Try not to let this get you down too much – it’s not the right time at which to commit yourself to any line of action, anyway, whether in an emotional situation or any other. So turn your attention to some other area of your life, and wait until at least after midmonth when someone or something will help you to make up your mind.

The emphasis this month is on your relationship with a partner. It’s a positive and happy influence, and if you can find extra time to spend doing the things you most enjoy doing together (and oh, dear, yes – Virgos really do know how to enjoy themselves in the right way) you’ll find that it will be time very pleasantly and positively spent.

AQUARIUS JAN 20 – FEB 18 If you’re accused of being stubborn, take the accusation seriously – this is no time for inflexibility. Try harder than usual to keep an open mind about important issues. You should be quite capable of seeing things clearly and not digging your toes in when a little calm thought will convince you that it’s a bad thing to do.

PISCES FEB 19 – MAR 19 During the second half of the month, you’ll feel rather more circumspect, and will tend to think twice before taking any important decision. This is a good thing because it’ll be well for you to avoid any over-enthusiasm if you’re to maintain and even surpass the strong position you’ll have established earlier so that your progress will be steady and sound and at the end of the coming twelve months you’ll feel very satisfied with your progress. 132
