November 2021 | Issue #262

www.bazaar.town

Can you imagine how relaxed and chilled out everyone would be if the weather was like this all year long? I might be hallucinating, but I can almost feel the positive vibes floating around me, even when I’m stuck in nasty traffic. The amazing weather combined with the fact that all the kids are back in school and university, and that the airport is fully open again, and that we seem to have the nasty deceptive virus under control here, especially when compared to many other places around the world make everything better, brighter, and happier. That’s all certainly reflected in this colossal November issue of the magazine, starting with the beautiful cover by Rania Abulhasan, who is also our Up Close and Personal candidate this month. From inspiring art to inspiring stories, we loved every minute of our discussion with the fascinating Mariam Alghanim. Known everywhere in the online world as Maramii, she is a blogger, podcaster, life coach and a lifelong learner and lover of self-improvement that has helped her overcome her battle with cancer. Utilizing her life lessons to help others, learn more about what the published author has to say in this month’s edition of truth or dare. We’re definitely in the mood for more fun and excitement, and what is more exhilarating than racing around a track on go-karts? With the opening of Q8 Karting at Al Kout Mall, it is finally time to live out all our race car driving dreams. Speaking of cars, but slightly bigger ones, this issue we’re highlighting the beautiful and all-new Corolla Cross. The SUV hybrid was designed for the sophisticated urban dweller who wants luxury, performance, and the ability to go off the beaten track and explore nature without destroying it. The nicer weather means the return of spending more time outside. We were hosted by the wonderful people at Radisson Blu and experienced BBQ Wednesday at Al Bustan restaurant. Sitting on the terrace, surrounded by great company and sampling delicious grills and international cuisine we felt that life had returned to pre-Covid era times. Speaking of dining Al fresco, if you’re planning on firing up that grill in your own backyard, or you’re planning a series of Kashtas, then make sure you order all your BBQ ingredients from the good folks at Makani. We’ve rounded up their incredible offerings for you in one special feature.

MARIAM (MARAMII) ALGHANIM The woman who believed she could, so she did By bazaar staff

Mariam Alghanim, but known everywhere as Maramii, is a blogger, podcaster, life coach and a lifelong learner and lover of self-improvement. At university she studied Accounting but after a serious battle with cancer she found out that her talents and skills could be put to better use by helping other people deal with life. “I decided to become a life coach after going through a bunch of things in life and getting better after cancer,” she explains. She believes that ever yone is responsible for his or her life and gets to decide how to face it. And that anyone can improve their lifestyle, decisions and choices or the opposite, but most importantly it is important that people not dwell on yesterday because a new day is a fresh opportunity to set new goals and work towards them. Our first introduction to Mariam was via her Instagram @maramiiq8, and it is a happy space filled with ever ything she enjoys from outfits of the day, to cake and affirmations to positive and personal quotes. “What you see on Instagram is 100% my life, I use it as a journal to document what I am up to,” she says. She thinks that people should be authentic and true to themselves on the platform. She chooses to spread positivity because she believes that if ever yone did, happiness and joy would become more prevalent ever ywhere which is better for our physical and mental health. Mariam approaches this topic from experience, she is a cancer sur vivor, but can be better described as a warrior. When she was diagnosed with the disease, she gave herself a couple of hours to mentally deal with it then decided that she would live life fully. She did not feel angr y or bitter, but realized that she was chosen and that she could get better. Fully accepting her situation and viewing it as an opportunity instead of punishment fueled her attitude. She started spending quality time with her close family members, attending events and making sure that ever y experience counted. “Hope is a small word, but it is huge in meaning. Hope is what helped me overcome ever ything and I advise anyone in a similar situation to find hope,” Mariam elaborates. She feels so strongly about it, that she wrote a book about it. Published in Arabic, the title translates to “And I returned to life”. It is an honest and heart rending portrayal about her 30

journey accompanying someone on their illness and treatment journey abroad for four years, battling cancer and how she chose to deal with these difficulties and prevail. “The core message from my book is that life is good and that there is always light after darkness,” she explains. She tells us that more books are in the works and we’re excited to read her work again because

she helps us see life in a completely different way. Mariam reminds us that we need to avoid making mountains out of molehills. She says that prior to her diagnosis she would automatically make a big deal out of things, but now she has learned to let things go and to stay relaxed and focused on the things that really matter.

RED BULL NEYMAR JR’S FIVE RETURNS TO KUWAIT

The Phenomenal Tournament Seeks to Discover Kuwait’s 2021 Champion By bazaar staff

Red Bull Neymar Jr’s Five, the global sensation, has returned to cities worldwide in 2021. Several major countries have recently concluded their finals, and this month Kuwait will undergo its qualifiers and finals as well.

Red Bull Neymar Jr’s Five is a cross-continent five-a-side football tournament. Participating countries conclude with a country final, where the winners qualify for the Red Bull Neymar Jr’s Word Final appearance. This is their chance to win the tournament proper and bring back the championship trophy to their home country. The global tournament will return to Kuwait in

October 2021. Both fans and players have been eagerly awaiting the opportunity to show the world what they have to offer. The Red Bull Neymar Jr’s Five 2021 Kuwait Qualifiers took place over two sets of three-day events. The first were on October 18, and 19. The Kuwait qualifiers second round took place on October, on 25, 26. These led up to the Red Bull Neymar Jr’s Five

Kuwait Country Final, which will be on November 4, 2021. The best of Kuwait will go on to the World Final. This year, and for the first time ever, the Red Bull Neymar Jr’s Final will be hosted by the Gulf country of Qatar. More information regarding the World Finals will arrive at a later date. The event in Kuwait is held in partnership with Puma Middle East, and Acqua Eva.

Grand Avenue - The Avenues

RED BULL NEYMAR JR’S FIVE RETURNS TO KUWAIT Registration is still open for all teams looking to sign up in Kuwait. Interested athletes are kindly directed to the official country website below: redbull.com/mea-en/events/red-bull-neymar-jrsfive-kuwait-2021. The rules of the game are unchanged from previous years. They are as follows: • Players must be aged 16 and over at the time of the tournament • Seven player teams • Five players per team on the pitch No goalkeepers • Stepping inside the box results in a penalty for the other team • When you score a goal, the other side loses a player for the duration of the match • The match lasts 10 minutes or until a team runs out of players • Any games ending in a draw will result in a 1-on1 battle The simplicity of the rules belies the intensity of the matches. At 10 minutes, they are extremely satisfying to watch and play. There is no time to waste, and teams must go into their matchups with a strategy that’s been practiced to achieve any success. Every goal scored places the other 36

team in a precarious position, which further fuels their team to take chances to score and even out the playing field. More than 30 countries are participating in this year’s tournament, and as previously stated, many have concluded their country finals, like the United Kingdom, and the United Arab Emirates. This month, the focus will be on the Kuwait

tournament, which has always proven to be competitive and memorable. All interested teams are encouraged to sign up today and look forward to a superb return of Red Bull Neymar Jr’s Five.

RANIA ABULHASAN

On creating enduring art and meaningful expressions By bazaar staff

Take a quick scroll through Rania Abulhasan’s Instagram account @3plus5dots, and you will relate to her art. It is simple, the lines are clean and there is an abstraction to it that does not erase meaning or message. We were getting strong Picasso vibes but with modern notes. Rania is a contemporary Kuwaiti artist and has created a beautiful portfolio presenting art and product design over the years. As a child, art was always part of her life and by the time she had reached high school she knew she wanted to study her passion. “I knew Parsons would be the school I would go to. I worked hard to be able to qualify for it,” she explained. She moved to Paris and enrolled in Parsons in Paris but later on moved to New York to finish her degree at The New School at Parsons School of Art and Design. She graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts. In 1999 Rania joined the big leagues and started working for LVMH as a designer. Her time there was invaluable, “I gained a lot of knowledge and experience. I learned to be resilient and organized with my work,” she said. Her constant and strong passion for fine art is the root of her inspiration but her external environment is another source of ideas. “I draw inspiration wherever I live. So Paris and New York are two of the cities that have influenced my work among many other cities I have lived in,” Rania told us. She majored in Fashion Design, while continuing to explore her passion for design and Fine Arts: she attended a fine arts program at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris and minored in Product Design at Parsons. From her educational years to all the different places she worked, Rania collaborated with many influential artists and designers in the world’s most forward thinking cities, and this has also helped her grow into the artist she is today. “I have had the opportunity to train and work under many artists and designers which I am grateful for. They have helped me with my craft and my artistic growth. I paint what I feel using color, shapes and technique to relay my message. My art and design are intertwined, they draw inspiration from one another. I am professionally a designer and a working artist,” she explained how her path was shaped by her experiences. Art is a relationship between the artist and the viewer, and Rania compares it to a language or a conversation, she expresses feelings, emotions and a message and hopes that the viewer can interpret it when they view her art. She started publicly exhibiting in 1995, her first collection was a series of self-portraits, and she has been doing that ever since. Showing her work has helped her grow and evolve, yet it can be stressful. Over the years she has learned to be more relaxed and it 38

is now a much more enjoyable process for her. Not all of Rania’s work is related to fashion or art, in 2005 she created a concept line of home products, including small furniture pieces and home scents. Currently she is a partner at the Kuwaiti interior design firm Unschooled Designers. Rania’s work shines a light on life and movement. Colors and shapes are expertly manipulated by her brush to start a story that you as a viewer can finish. Rania enjoys experimenting with different mediums. She often starts with a water-based medium and moves on to an oil finish based on the surface she is working on. Some of her art is done on paper, others on canvas and her most recent collection “THAWB”

is painted on printed paper. The collection was inspired by traditional festive Kuwaiti attire, it is very modern yet respectful of Kuwait’s heritage and the past. “I like to create timeless pieces that can go on and evolve with time,” she explained. And that’s exactly what they feel like. Her work of her paintings feels instantly classic and enduring. And she has no favorites, “All the pieces that I work on are special to me. They start with an idea, emotion or just a visual inspiration and go from there,” she said. We were mostly curious about her IG handle because it appeared to hold more meaning. “This has been my signature logo for as long as I remember, the inspiration behind 3+5 comes from my fascination with numbers. The number

8 which symbolizes eternity to me is where this comes from 3+5=8 and I used dots to draw the number eight as my personal symbol,” she elaborated. The eight little unassuming dots suddenly held a lot of weight, exactly like Rania’s art. When we asked Rania what she would tell budding artists, she was clear and succinct, “Trust your instincts, believe in yourself, pursue your dreams, take your craft seriously, knowledge and experience are equally important and life is precious”. She values hard work and seriousness while also embracing the beauty of art and the precarity of life. She is a reflection of her work, simple on the outside but deep and layered the longer you engage with it.

Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, Dr. Ali Charara explains the significance of this accreditation, “Substantial equivalency is a term used by NASAD for non-US institutions. We are the first program in Kuwait to receive this recognition, which certifies that the education, program contents, resources, and faculty qualifications in the graphic design program at AUK are aligned with international standards. This is a big achievement for the Department, College and Institution. WEAVING CULTURE AND HISTORY WITH SADU

Telling stories with wool By bazaar staff

A couple of weeks ago I had fallen into a weaving rabbit hole. I was researching looms, techniques, materials and designs and then I came across Sadu weaving resources. I had always thought that Sadu was about the motifs and colors, but it turns out that the technique itself originated in the region and is unique to it.

The craft is said to be an ancient tribal weaving craft and is a way of expressing the cultural heritage and history of nomads in the Arabian gulf region. The fabric created is instantly recognizable and iconic. The deep reds and oranges are offset by a deep black and a bright white, with beige often included. Long geometric patterns with symbols of horses, camels, combs, and snakes lie in bands between the colors. Ironically, I have been to Sadu House. The Al Sadu Society opened it in 1980 to preserve the ethnic handcraft and protect history. I was even aware that they hold regular workshops and exhibits. Yet, it had never clicked in my head how important and interesting the craft was. Weaving is a slow craft, much like life in the past and creating a Sadu weaving was arduous and time consuming. Starting with shearing sheep, preparing the wool, cleaning and dyeing it using natural colors and then spinning it into fine yarn, before the actual weaving can even begin.

46

The women used a floor loom which could be easily used in a tent and just as quickly packed away for moving around the desert. Sadu means “extension of the hand,” but it also refers to the fabric and the loom used to create it. Talk about meta! According to a paper by Keireine Canavan and Ali Alnajadah published in the Journal of Cloth and Culture in 2015; “The complex practice of weaving was difficult for the women, who had received no conventional education or training, as patterns and designs were memorized and not recorded or written down. It requires great skill and concentration to maintain pattern accuracy, but provided the opportunity for skillful individualism and expressive innovation.” The finished fabric was used for so many things from tents to protect from the elements to rugs and storage bags. The nomad travellers were extremely resourceful and everything they carried needed to serve a utilitarian purpose, yet

the skillful women who made these items knew how to add their own aesthetic and tell a story that would be passed down for generations. They understood the landscape and knew how to wield it to serve their needs. We see the sadu being thrown to decorate kashtas and diwaniyas and while I love seeing it, I wish more people paid more attention to the art itself and the people who created it. Maybe we need a weaving class at school so we can learn how our ancestors lived and to appreciate our own origin story so we can carry some of that into the future and find ways to incorporate it into our everyday lives and not just on camping trips.

Follow @saduhouse on Instagram for more information. The cultural center is located on the Arabian Gulf Road and is open every day from 10 am - 1 pm and is closed on Friday.

AUTHORING ARCHITECTURAL HERITAGE

Interviewing the Portuguese architect couple Ricardo Camacho and Sara Saragoça Soares who have delved into the Kuwait’s modern history of buildings By Reem Al Gharabally

It has been 5 years since the book “Modern Architecture Kuwait 1949– 1989” was published, a collaboration between Portuguese architect couple Ricardo Camacho and Sara Saragoça Soares and Italian architect Roberto Fabbri. It was a first of its kind systematic analysis of modern architecture in Kuwait documenting the dramatic transformation of Kuwait City with the start of the oil boom. It was followed by “Essays, Arguments & Interviews on Modern Architecture Kuwait” featuring interviews, essays and arguments by local and international scholars. Earlier this year the couple’s third collaboration was published “Pan-Arab Modernism 1968-2018: The History of Architectural Practice in The Middle East”, co-edited with Kuwaiti architect and researcher Dalal Musaed Al Sayer. In the introduction to their first book, they wrote their intention was to write “a practical tool that would trigger better use of these buildings”. Since its publication many of the buildings that were documented in those books have now been demolished or are in states of disrepair. However, their work has come at a time when there is a growing interest among young Kuwaitis in conser vation. The new book documents how modern Kuwait was built in the utopian spirit of pan Arabism. Bazaar’s contributor Reem Al Gharabally spoke to the couple from their home in Portugal over Zoom about their years working in Kuwait and what inspired them to embark on such a monumental task. What bought you to Kuwait? Ricardo: I had a colleague in the US from Har vard who was from Kuwait, Abdullatif Al Mishari. We did a trip around the world, a kind of interrail but by plane [laughs]. When we were

58

[Continued...]

in Mumbai we decided to go through Dubai and Kuwait. That was first time I came to Kuwait in October 2009. After that first trip we started engaging in different projects and I found myself spending more and more time here until finally in 2010 I moved here. The way we moved to Kuwait was more organic and not so professionally or financially based. Sara: I started moving back and forth from Portugal and Kuwait from 2010 and the rest of the family moved in 2012. At the time I was doing my Masters theses in Portugal about preser vation. I was thinking of doing something about Portugal, but I was travelling back and forth between Portugal and Kuwait and I saw all these buildings here. I remember visiting Sawaber in Ramadan, August 2010 and it was really hot. It was such an interesting experience. After that summer I proposed to write my thesis about Kuwait. So, when Ricardo suggested moving to Kuwait it was ver y easy for me to say yes. I already knew the countr y and it felt ver y familiar. How did the idea of the book come up – to make a catalogue of these modernist buildings?

Ricardo: The intention was to use books or exhibitions as a way to stop the erosion and demolition of this heritage. There was a sort of a momentum in the beginning of the 2010s where we felt there was a growing interest in preser ving these buildings and we were supported by Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Science (KFAS) and Dar Al Athar Al-Islamiyah (DAI). Sara: Since the old mud town was demolished, these buildings were the old buildings now. When I was researching the book, I never thought that so many would be demolished in such a short period of time. The former Gulf bank headquarters was demolished 3 days after the book launch. Ricardo: At the same time, we were involved in the construction site of Shaheed park and we were exposed to a larger network, that were part of the construction site in the past. This was also ver y resourceful. Until that point we only met younger people. Sara: 2013 was a ver y busy year in a good way. We were in Shaheed park working there, getting involved in the research. We were really engaging in the countr y. I remember feeling ver y happy that year in Kuwait.

The book reads like a labor of love. Being from Portugal did you feel some sort of affinity to Kuwait? Ricardo: I felt attached to Kuwait apart from that city was the rurality in the way older Kuwaitis carried the past. I am not saying this in a depreciative way. I am saying this in a ver y culturally engaged way with the territor y, with the landscape, the dates, the palms, with the farms in Abdali and Wafra, the coastal line, the relation with the beach. All this was for me was stronger than the desert and a post oil town built in the desert. Sara: We did not move to Kuwait for financial reasons. We were in Kuwait like we were here in Portugal. For us it was like the same thing. We were developing our interests in Kuwait and we met a lot of amazing people that allowed us to feel at home. The introduction to the first book says the intention was “to create practical tool that would trigger better use of these buildings”. But since its publication some of these notable buildings have now been demolished. Do you think the book can still fulfil its aim? Ricardo: The book wanted to engage the younger community of professionals – architects and engineers – so when they are approached by a developer and clients, to consider preser ving the existing condition rather than demolishing. Sara: I remember going inside the old Chamber of Commerce with a few architects just before it was demolished to take pictures. I was shocked because for me the building was not only a nice building, but it was also ver y solid. I think it was important for young local architects to realize that these demolitions were happening in a way that should have been stopped. Why is it important to have a heritage program? Ricardo: There are certain spaces, certain buildings that preser ve a certain myster y, a freshness. Those spaces are worth preser ving. Not because they represent a nostalgia of a particular moment but because they keep that feeling throughout time and this is ver y important to recognize these are the spaces that build the urban quality of a city. Sara: When you are in such a harsh environment with high temperatures it is important to preser ve spaces where you can breathe a little, where you can walk. You don’t have that with skyscrapers or a fancy lobby full of security. What would you say to young architects interested in conservation? Sara: I hope they will keep those dreams and those ambitions alive. Other wise, ever ything will disappear. It will be impossible to stop it. Because it sometimes happens when you have the chance to make a profit you forget your original dreams.

60

[...Continued]

How is the third book different from the first two books? Ricardo: The book was sponsored by PACE and their archives influenced the structure of the book. Even the years 1968 to 2018 represents the 50 years of PACE. Of course, a ver y important person here along with Tareq Shuaib who made the PACE archives accessible to us, is Dalal al Sayer, the co-author. Dalal has a ver y strong interest bound with her PhD research on the post oil influence and the idea of the network of countries and cities around the region. The previous books were done by foreigners. It was missing that strong link to a truly local agenda that Dalal’s brings to this project. Sara: And it is a bilingual book and that is a statement in itself. It is a local Arabic book. It is not a book by foreigners talking about Kuwait. Ricardo: I would also mention a person who passed away recently – Charles Haddad. A former partner and co-founder of PACE, a Syrian Palestinian in the diaspora that went to Lebanon and came walking to Kuwait in 1956. The inter views we had with him were fundamental. You talked about a theory that Kuwait was built in a spirit of Mediterranean cosmopolitanism. Can you tell us more about that? Ricardo: The idea was to cover the energy that flowed from the Levant into the Gulf, which is the true spirit of the Pan Arab - the migration of people but also the acceptation of bringing the cosmopolitanism and the urbanity of the Mediterranean into the Gulf. That is something that Kuwait lost somewhere on the way. That idea that your modern vison of a town was based on multiculturalism of the Mediterranean, on Cairo, Alexandria and Beirut. It is not the Dubai model that envisions an Asiatic concept of the

new world, an American vision of the new world. The book tries to capture that. There is a ver y small stor y in the book about the first graduates of the diploma studio at the American University of Beirut for architect and engineers in 1952. Their diploma project was on the Pan Arab highway which was the hope to freely drive from Beirut to Kuwait crossing Syria and North Jordan. It is a whole generation that did their diploma project on this idea. Some of them proposed motels, some of them a gas station. Charles Haddad proposed a Bedouin refugee town in the Jordan desert, south of Damascus. A whole generation was engaged with this Pan Arab spirit. These were the people who came here with hopes that Kuwait was part of the Middle East and not just a city in a new countr y. Many times, there is this discussion about the legitimacy of a building that was designed by a foreigner in Kuwait to be a Kuwaiti thing or not. When you put that doubt you don’t understand what Kuwait really is. The buildings in the 1960s and 70s in Kuwait are the product of a multitude of people. The designer is a small fragment of what that enterprise represented.

H&M TEAMS UP WITH ACTOR JOHN BOYEGA ON MEN’S COLLECTION Pushing Style And Sustainability By bazaar staff

H&M announced the upcoming release of Edition by John Boyega, a more sustainable menswear collection worn by one of the world’s most inspiring actors and changemakers. The new Edition By collection features autumn’s key looks constructed from recycled, organic and innovative materials, such as Vegea — a vegan alternative to leather, partly made from waste from the winemaking industry.

62

John Boyega is a British-Nigerian actor and producer, known for his role as Finn in the Star Wars sequel trilogy films and, most recently, for his Golden Globe winning performance in the film series Small Axe. Off screen, Boyega is admired worldwide for serving fashion-forward styles, and for being a passionate advocate for racial justice. “I’m excited to collaborate with H&M on a collection that aligns my passions with purpose. Sustainability to me, means thinking about longevity for the benefit of those coming after us. This collaboration has already birthed opportunities for fresh dynamic creatives. Two birds with one stone,” said John Boyega. “John Boyega is a brave leader of a generation that’s speaking up for change, believing there’s a better way to treat each other and the planet. H&M is proud to team up with John for Edition by John Boyega, a contemporary, more sustainable collection for men,” said Ross Lydon, Head of Menswear Design at H&M. Edition by John Boyega fuses effortless workwear pieces with floral prints and tie-dye patterns. The collection is made using more sustainable materials, in line with H&M’s commitment to move fashion into a more sustainable future. In the new menswear line, cotton is organic or recycled from textileproduction waste or post-consumer waste; nylons and polyesters are recycled, while viscose fibers are from sustainable sources. With each piece, Edition by John Boyega proves the season’s key pieces can be made in a more sustainable way. We wanted to know more about the collection from John Boyega himself and this is what he had to say. What has shaped you into the man that you are today? a man who dares to speak out and stand up for what you believe in. Have you always been like this? My family and my experiences have shaped me into the man I am today. I’m not sure if I’ve always been like this. I know I haven’t walked through life addressing absolutely everything but I’ve learned a balance. So we can say I’ve been evolving over time. What’s your philosophy when it comes to courage and speaking your truth? Why is that important to you? When someone speaks their truth boldly it breaks us out of our reality. Gives us a moment to put ourselves in other people’s shoes. We stop and we genuinely start to empathize or at the very least understand. That’s why it’s important for people to speak out What kind of change/s do you want to see in your industry and the world? Why? I feel like our audience is ready for fresh new original stories. They know all the tricks, but I feel like people love a good story at the end of the day.

I hope to see more opportunities for young talent. I also want to continue to help with that. You’ve said in an interview that you want to be a door to others, to give them opportunities. Can you speak a little more about this? Well, I was given opportunities through my journey in this and that support has helped put me where I am today. I believe in doubling up on that. Bless others. Especially without an audience or cameras. What piece of advice would you give to your younger self? What advice or life lessons learned do you want to share with young people that follow you? I’d tell my younger self to stop rocking those strange jeans with those busted loafers. To young people I’d say try to remain curious when finding your passions and if you do find it, remember to remain a fan of it no matter where it takes you. Remember that failure is a part of any process. Take care of you while trying to navigate this and drink water. What beliefs and values guide you when you make career and life decisions? Can you give an example when your values have helped you make an important decision? There’s a combination with this! For my career choices I collaborate mainly with Femi Oguns, who is my agent, and also taught me at Identity Drama School. I believe in God and the strategy behind positive manifestations in life. This all influences the choices I make as a person firstly and as an actor

There are many definitions of sustainability out there. The Brundtland Commission’s definition in 1987: “Meeting the needs of the present generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” What does sustainability mean to you? For me sustainability means thinking about longevity for the benefit of those coming after us. It means using our current passions to create opportunities that exist past our lifetime. What’s your relationship to fashion? How does great style make you feel? Great style will boost your confidence for sure and when I love a fit, I feel good inside and out. I wouldn’t say I’m the most patient with shopping itself but I love to look good and I love finding clothes that represent who I am. Even if others don’t like it, I’ll still enjoy how it makes me feel. What are you most happy about regarding this collaboration with H&M? This collaboration started off with an honest conversation and a shared vision. I’m excited to see a collaboration that aligns my passions with purpose and I’m happy that this collab has already birthed opportunities for fresh dynamic creatives. Two birds with one stone

Edition by John Boyega is now available on kw.hm.com, in selected stores and on the H&M MENA App with prices starting from KD 4.990. 63

Research shows having a formal position of authority with influence over people, resources, and rewards is associated with cognitive and behavioral costs. People who feel powerful (either in the moment or consistently) make significantly lower estimates of the likelihood of negative outcomes. They are more likely to take risks both to obtain gains and avoid losses. Feeling powerful makes us more prone to three behavioral patterns that increase the likelihood of making poor decisions: overvaluing our own perspective; dismissing the expertise of others, and failing to recognize limitations. Not seeing other perspectives Taking the perspective of others is important in any leadership role. Those who feel more powerful tend, however, to overvalue their own perspective and discount the perspectives of others. This has been demonstrated in behavioural experiments by social psychologist Adam Galinsky and colleagues. The researchers evoked feelings of greater or lesser power in participants by asking them either to recall a time they had power over someone else or a time someone else had power over them. Others, who were asked to do neither, formed the control group. Participants were then asked to perform three different tests measuring their ability to see the perspective of other people. One test, for example, required them to identify emotions expressed by others. Those encouraged to remember feeling powerful were, on average, 6% less accurate than the control group. They were also less likely to detect expressions of displeasure in emails compared to the group made to feel less powerful. Dismissing expert advice Feeling powerful makes us more prone to dismiss expert advice. This effect has been measured by organizational behavioural researcher Leigh Tost and colleagues. In their experiments, they used the same method as Galinsky and colleagues to make participants feel more or less powerful. They then asked participants to estimate the weight of three people or guess the amount of money in three jars of coins. After the first round of estimates, participants were given access to advice from people who had done the tasks before. They were told if these advisers were “experts” (with a strong performance record) or novices (with estimates that were just average). Those encouraged to feel less powerful were more inclined to listen to the advice of the experts. Those who felt more powerful were more likely to dismiss the expert and novice advice equally. 66

Participants also completed a survey about their feelings during the task. The results from this element of the study show those who felt more powerful had a greater sense of being in competition with others. The authors conclude that dismissing advice from experts is connected to a desire to “preserve their social dominance”. Not recognizing constraints The more powerful we feel, the more likely we will pursue goals aggressively and fail to recognize constraints. This is because power means we are, in fact, less constrained. The powerful have more resources to do what they like and to tell others what to do. Organizational researcher Jennifer Whitson and colleagues measured this tendency in experiments in which participants were given nine facts that could hinder achieving a goal — such as “not much money to invest” — and nine facts that could help, such as “there is high demand”. Those that felt powerful (again established through the method used by Galinsky and colleagues) were significantly less able to recall the constraints. The authors conclude “the powerful are more likely to act on their goals because the

constraints that normally inhibit action are less psychologically present for them”. Refusing to acknowledge constraints can sometimes be a useful thing. Apple founder Steve Jobs, for example, was notorious for ignoring his engineers’ complaints that they couldn’t do what he asked for. There’s a story of him tossing an iPod into a fish tank to demonstrate there was wasted space enabling air pockets. But such stubbornness is more likely to lead to bad outcomes, such the fate of Elizabeth Holmes, who modelled herself on Jobs and refused to accept her idea of compact medical blood-testing device couldn’t be made to work. Now she’s on trial for fraud. These downsides to power are worth remembering at a time when listening to different points of view and heeding expert advice has never been more important. Our experience from the pandemic is that power is best distributed. We need leaders who understand that power corrupts, and who are humble enough to listen.

FOUR SEASONS HOTEL KUWAIT CELEBRATES TRUFFLE SEASON IN STYLE AT SIGNATURE RESTAURANTS

November’s month-long festival at Sintoho and Dai Forni sets the stage for unforgettable dining memories courtesy of the creative flair of new Executive Chef Thierry Papillier. Recently joining Four Seasons Hotel Kuwait at Burj Alshaya from Four Seasons Hotel Marrakesh, Executive Chef Thierry Papillier is crafting creative and memorable dining experiences for the hotel’s esteemed guests. By bazaar staff

Considered as the ultimate indulgence, truffles are known to gourmands as the diamonds of the culinary world. Elusive in every single way, fine truffles are a rare commodity and a highly sought-after delicacy, from the way they are sourced, their unique varieties to how they elevate even the simplest of dishes. When expertly paired, even the lightest shaving of fine Truffles creates such a nuanced aroma and flavor that is truly inimitable. This is why we were elated to learn that Four Seasons Hotel Kuwait at Burj Alshaya is celebrating this fine delicacy at its most loved dining destinations, Dai Forni and Sintoho restaurants. Four Seasons Hotel Kuwait at Burj Alshaya invites the knowledgeable dining community of Kuwait to celebrate truffle season at its signature restaurants this November, with an exciting array of dishes presented by Executive Chef Thierr y Papillier. Having carefully selected some of using the finest truffles from worldrenowned producers from France and Italy, Chef Thierr y has painstakingly designed menus at Dai Forni and Sintoho, the Hotel’s celebrated restaurants situated on the 21st floor of the proper ty. “Our guests can expect some truly unforgettable moments from these dishes and the incredible quality of the truffles I have secured from our suppliers,” explains Papillier, alluding to the selection of the much soughtafter Périgord black truffle from France and the highly prized white Alba from Italy’s Piedmont region. “The taste of a fresh truffle is almost beyond what we can describe. In these menus I am presenting, the aromas and flavour profiles are elevated to a point where the whole experience becomes almost magical,” exudes Chef Thierr y, demonstrating his own excitement for the limited-time dining event. 68

Each evening throughout the month of November until December 15, a specially created truffle menu will complement the existing culinary offerings at Dai Forni’s truly authentic Italian style and Sintoho’s Asian concept, allowing guests the choice of mixing their selections to include their favourite plates as well as exciting truffle-inspired dishes that bring a new dimension to the dining experience that guarantees to delight patrons. “At Sintoho, I think one of the show-stoppers will be the Tuna Tataki, because the flavour of yuzu and truffle together produces a flavour that stays long in the mouth and matches perfectly to the texture of the tuna itself,” explains Chef Thierry. “With that said, I wouldn’t be surprised if the Truffle Wagyu Katso Sando is the best seller amongst the starters because it really is a superflavourful gourmet sandwich thanks that unique black truffle taste profile,” says Chef, who recently took the helm as the head of culinary operations of Four Seasons Hotel Kuwait at Burj Alshaya. Demonstrating a carefully considered, independent approach to both signature restaurants on the 21st floor when crafting the truffle season menus, Chef Thierry performed a detailed study into the freshest ingredients available that could be used to best match the outstanding quality of the truffles he was sourcing. “Working with truffles is a serious business,” he smiles. “These are the rarest, best flavour mushrooms in the world because of their unique

aroma, flavor and taste and so it’s incredibly important that I respect the ingredients and create something truly special in both restaurants,” explains Chef Thierry, showing a thoughtful approach to the process followed to present starters, main courses and desserts which will undoubtedly translate to delighting guests this November at the signature dining destinations of Four Seasons Hotel Kuwait. “There are some classic pairings at Dai Forni, such as the White Truffle Linguine which is simply shaved on top of buttery Linguini to allow all those fresh aromas of the truffle to take hold,” explains Chef Thierry. “The Beef Carpaccio with parmesan cream and truffle dressing with the black truffle is quite simply an explosion of flavour,” he smiles. Truffle season menus are available every evening from November 1 to December 15 at Sintoho and Dai Forni, situated on the 21st Floor of Four Seasons Hotel Kuwait at Burj Alshaya. BUYER BEWARE

Why you can’t always trust ratings on sites like Amazon and TripAdvisor By Sucharita Kodali

A while back, I bought a mouthwash that was advertised on Amazon. It was from a well-known brand, and it had a high consumer-rating score. The mouthwash turned out to be greasy, the bottle was poorly designed, and it tasted awful: I would have given the item one star. The high rating was baffling. Surely, others agreed with me, so I returned to the item’s page to see if there were other low ratings. It turned out there were many, and nearly all those reviews reiterated my criticisms. Despite so many 1-star reviews, how did the product get such a high overall rating?

I found an answer several links deep on Amazon.com: The site says that when calculating a product’s ratings, it uses “machine-learned models instead of a simple average.” As Amazon further explains, “These models take into account factors, such as how recent the rating or review is and verified purchase status.” Whatever the company claimed went into the calculation, it seemed like many of the 1-star reviews weren’t counted toward the final rating in spite of being valid assessments of the product. Amazon isn’t the only one that uses algorithms like this to determine ratings. TripAdvisor has a Popularity Ranking algorithm, which claims it uses review quality, recency, and quantity factors. For Uber delivery ratings, Uber notes, “Your overall delivery rating is based on the average of your 100 latest ratings.” Even that isn’t entirely true, as I experienced Uber saying it wouldn’t count a recent rating of mine. The bottom line is that it’s extremely difficult for a consumer to know what goes into the ratings they see and rely on. Ratings and reviews are among the most important drivers of conversion in just about every product category, so the lack of transparency in any ratings system is both perplexing and alarming.

72

According to a recent survey from my employer and market research firm Forrester, more than a third of U.S. shoppers say that ratings and reviews “strongly influence” their final purchase decisions. More than half of consumers say that if they see lots of good reviews, they feel confident in their purchase choices. Unfortunately, ratings are often subject to deception and manipulation as I saw from buying mouthwash on Amazon. There are some very easy fixes to this problem. All companies that provide reviews should provide more transparency around reviews, or face hefty fines. They should share which ratings were collected within the past year or last few months, and they should have both overall scores as well as scores of verified buyers and confirmed members. They should reveal whether ratings and reviews were paid for or incentivized in some way, and what the ratings are when any paid reviews are removed. Marketplaces should also be required to disclose what percent of buyers returned the items or received a refund. Consumer should know how long after consumers received the item that the review was written. The sortability of ratings, particularly the ability to sort by lowest

ratings first, should also be table stakes. These aren’t radical suggestions; the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development has recognized the same issues that I did and has already made some of these recommendations. However, the only legislation around ratings and reviews in the U.S. was years ago and was created to protect a consumer’s right to post negative reviews. Because of the lack of transparency around ratings and reviews, they are subject to manipulation. It’s time to disallow companies that can shape shopper demand from publishing “black box” ratings. More recently, HR 3816 introduced this June in the U.S. Congress says that big tech companies shouldn’t give preference their own products: Calling out features like inflated ratings and reviews, particularly for products and services that are also advertised on a platform, should be part of that as well. But until that happens, we may just be stuck buying greasy mouthwash.

WIN BIG WITH ABK’S

ALFOUZ DRAW ACCOUNT

Retire early with the opportunity to win a KD 5,000 monthly salary for 10 years and enter Kuwait’s biggest weekly draws for KD 10,000! By bazaar staff

We would love to take a #10_year_holiday, and we just might be able to pull it off with an Al Ahli Bank of Kuwait (ABK) Alfouz Draw account! Just imagine this scenario with us: Your commitments are all made while you go off and pursue your dreams. That’s the magic of Alfouz’s annual prize that gives you the chance to win KD 5,000 for a whopping ten years! Early retirement, here we come!

Haneen Al-Rumaihi, Assistant General Manager - Retail Banking at ABK Following the grand launch that took social media and the streets of Kuwait by storm, Mrs. Haneen Al-Rumaihi, Assistant General Manager Retail Banking at ABK gave us the details that we needed to dream big with ABK. What is the Alfouz Draw account and what are the benefits of this account? The Alfouz draw account is the first account of its kind. It gives customers the opportunity to win KD 10,000 weekly, which is the biggest weekly prize in Kuwait. The account offers a unique annual prize, 74

which is a KD 5,000 monthly salary for 10 years. Who is the targeted customer of this account? Everyone can open an Alfouz draw account. The account is available for both new or existing ABK customers and individuals of every age. What is the minimum amount required to open an Alfouz Draw account? KD 100 is the minimum amount required to open an Alfouz draw account. This gives the customer a chance to enter the draw where every KD 100

represents one chance. It can also be used as a savings account. What was your motive for launching the Alfouz draw account and how did its idea materialize? I can say that the global pandemic was one of the reasons that motivated us to expedite the launch of this account. It changed people’s consumption habits, making security and financial stability the top priorities for every family. As one of the leading banks, we felt obligated to encourage customers to save and even reward them for this.

How will you conduct the Alfouz draws? All draws will be conducted under the supervision of a representative from the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. An external auditor will also be appointed to ensure the highest degree of transparency when announcing the names of the winners. Most of the local banks offer an account for prizes, what distinguishes the Alfouz draw account? The Alfouz draw account has several advantages,

the most important of which is the KD 100 minimum amount to open the account. This makes the account accessible to all segments of society and individuals of all ages. In addition to the KD 10,000 prize, which is the highest in Kuwait, there is also the annual prize of KD 5,000 monthly for 10 years, which provides customers safety and peace of mind for the future, completely changing the life of the winner. Are there benefits or a loyalty program? Yes, and it is very simple, but very motivating,

since all entries for prior months in the draw schedule are aggregated in the annual draw. Therefore, the more and longer the customer saves, the higher the chances of entering the annual draw.

For more information about ABK, please visit eahli.com or contact an ABK customer service agent via ‘Ahlan Ahli’ at 1899899 and follow the bank’s socials @Abk_Kuwait for their latest updates. 75

WHAT DO THE FANS WANT?

How ‘Squid Game’ reveals the flaw in Netflix’s products strategy By Nicole LaPorte

After years of hints that Netflix was planning to branch out into merchandise in a full-fledged way, making itself a tad more Disney-esque and finding new ways to capitalize on popular shows like Stranger Things, the streamer finally announced this week that it’s making the leap. Through a partnership with Walmart, Netflix has set up the Netflix Hub, an online storefront on Walmart’s site, where fans can buy anything from a Stranger Things cassette player to an Ada Twist, Scientist On-the-Go Lab Set to a Cobra Kai headband. But notably missing from the lineup is anything from Squid Game, which is currently the most popular non-English show ever to hit the platform, and which is on its way to being the most popular show, period, according to Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos. The Korean show—a dystopian series about a group of people clad in candy-colored track suits who take part in a series of deadly children’s games—has spawned nonstop headlines, TikTok memes, and Halloween costumes. Indeed, with its color ful garb and simple, stylized aesthetics, the show is visually arresting and, by extension, incredibly merch-friendly. In other words, it would be per fect for the Netflix Hub. Its absence, presumably, has to 76

do with the fact that the show has popped so recently, and so suddenly. (The Netflix Hub site promises that T-shirts are “coming soon!”) But fans’ fascination with the show and its actual products, as opposed to those dreamt up by Netflix, point to a hole in Netflix’s retail plan: Fans want the real thing, not the fake thing. Indeed, while Walmart and Netflix are waiting to stock up on T-shirts with Squid Game memes, the ultra-white Vans that characters wear in the show are selling like hotcakes. Since Squid Game launched, Google Trends search data has reportedly shown that searches of the skater slip-ons have increased by 7,800%. Meanwhile, searches for retro tracksuits has nearly doubled on Lyst, the shopping platform, according to the New York Times. Demand has also grown for yellow T-shirts, orange dresses, and knee-high socks—the uniform of a creepy doll in the show. Seemingly overnight, Amazon has birthed its own Squid Game economy, with dozens of products available for sale, including black masks, jade track suits, and plushies. Netflix is making some money off Squid Game swag. On Netflix’s online shop (separate from the Netflix Hub), there is a limited collection of T-shirts and hoodies related to the show, but they feel more like the kind of T-shirts sold after

a U2 concert—per functory nods to the actual per formers/per formance, usually on cheap fabric. Netflix has not revealed how many have actually sold, but the shirts are presumably not about to cause Netflix’s site to crash. The strategy toward consumer goods is part of Netflix’s overall push to diversify its revenue, as subscription growth has slowed after its surge of signups at the beginning of the pandemic, and as competition from the likes of Disney Plus, HBO Max, and Apple TV Plus has heated up. For products sold on the Netflix Hub, Netflix licenses its intellectual property to manufacturers and also gets a percentage of the manufacturers’ sales to retailers. Products are also a pathway to more subscribers. As Josh Simon, Netflix’s vice president of consumer products put it, “We want to continue to meet fans wherever they are, whether that’s through our biggest online marketplace at Walmart, or the more boutique and curated Netflix.shop.” But based on the response to Squid Game, Netflix might want to rethink its idea of what fans really want.

MAKING A CHOICE

The Girl Who Was Always Changing Her Mind, Who Couldn’t Make Up Her Mind, Who…. By Craig Loomis

After all, there are so many choices to choose from, so many possibilities. The selections are enormous. Not only that, everybody changes their mind—one day this, the next day that. All very normal, the way of the world, sah? And so it was that at 23 going on 24, she was all ready to marry. Grandmas, uncles, college friends, assorted cousins who she almost never saw--everybody said so. “The time is ripe.” Mubarak. The husband-to-be, a young banker who knew all there was to know about credit ratings, was waiting eagerly, papers all signed, the right people spoken to, money spent, the engagement and marriage dates set; but then, one cloudy morning in November, she looked out the window, saw a chance of rain and changed her mind, thinking: Come to think of it, his teeth are a little crooked, and what about that smile? More a sneer than anything else. And that was the beginning of the end of that. Or, how about that time last April when she was all packed and ready to go aboard, to London, to see the Thames, Albert’s Hall, Harrod’s beckoned; and later, according to her travel agent, she would move on to Paris and why not Venice. Tickets purchased, hotels reserved. But then it happened, and on her way to the airport, the terminal in sight, she tapped the driver on the shoulder, announcing, “Turn around.” “Madam?” “Turn around. Take me home.” “You forget something? Passport, tickets? I am always forgetting my tickets; in fact, just the other day, I….” “Lah, lah, nothing like that, just take me home.” “But Madam, the airport is here,” pointing to show her how here it was. “Right here.” “Turn this car around,” she said in a strange, husky voice that sounded nothing like her. So he did because that is what drivers do, and once safely home, she hurried to her bedroom, jumped into bed and spent the rest of the afternoon watching her big brown dresser crowded with lotions, creams and oils. Or, how about last Ramadan when she promised everybody she would do her duty and fast, even did a double prayer, pledging her allegiance. The father saying, “Good for you.” The mother giving her a hug, “That’s my girl.” But then during day two of Ramadan, at midday, in June, with the heat at its strongest, she went to her bedroom, locked the door, pulled the curtains shut, and taking a bottle of still-cold orange juice from her purse, expertly drank it, while eating a hotdog, mustard only. Later, with the sun starting to set, she felt slightly guilty, but not much. After all, in the end, it’s not her fault, not really, when the heat is like that, in June, who can blame her, who can blame anyone? 90

And so it went until that day she decided to cross the road not far from her house. Since it was a small but important road, it was almost always busy with traffic, with much honking, along with hard-charging trucks that thought nothing of going extra fast because there were no speed bumps, nothing like policemen to make a difference. With arms folded she watched and waited on the sidewalk, waiting for that natural lull in cars and trucks that had to come eventually, until it didn’t, and so, tired of waiting, thinking, surely anybody in their right driving mind will slow

down, to let her walk across the street. Convinced that this was how it was done, she thought once, twice, stepping into the road, then stepping back again while finally, sighing a sigh that said this is silly, she made up her mind and moved into the street. Half-way across—thinking nothing about running—she was hit by a water truck that never saw her, or if it did, thought nothing of hitting people who can’t make up their minds.

NEW SCHOOL OF LIFE

Gen Z job seekers are finding careers and building work relationships in a whole new way By Lydia Dishman

By 2030, Gen Z will make up 30% of the workforce. That’s a mere eight years away, yet the way these young professionals are already interacting with employers is going to change the workplace even more quickly. Handshake, the platform that connects students and employers, surveyed over 1,200 alumni and soon-to-be graduates as well as analyzed more than 2 million connections this year. The research reveals that this group is approaching networking and job seeking much more virtually than ever before—a trend that the company says has been kicked into high gear by the pandemic. COVID-19 notwithstanding, Gen Z is not only optimistic but quite ready to toss out the playbook and write their own ticket to career opportunity.

• Nearly 7 in 10 job seekers believe that they do not need to meet in person to forge a meaningful professional connection. • Women are 26% more likely than men to believe you do not need to meet in person to make a professional connection. • 87% of job seekers believe that messaging with an employer may lead to a job. • Across gender, race, ethnicity, and first-generation student status, 8 in 10 agree that it’s easier for them to learn about a career they’re interested in and make a wider range of professional connections than was possible in their parents’ generation.

92

“With two-thirds of respondents reporting they believe professional connections can occur completely online, the ongoing question is not whether Gen Z is willing to get out from behind their screens, but rather will they even have to?” Christine Cruzvergara, Handshake’s chief education strategy officer tells Fast Company. The report notes that Gen Z regards the internet as the “path to social capital—a wealth of information, resources, and network potential, facilitating access to a richer job pool and catalyzing broader professional networks than their parents.”

The research did point out that “who you know” is still important. However, those connections can be made virtually as well. The report states that 92% of alumni would pay it for ward by helping a fellow alumnus find a job. “If virtual networking is the most effective way to optimize a career and has many side benefits around inclusion and convenience, says Cruzvergara, “Gen Zers will undoubtedly leverage their digital-native skills for the foreseeable future.”

I SCREAM! YOU SCREAM!

I tried starting my day off by screaming in order to release stress By Stephanie Vozza

I haven’t had a reason to yell in the morning since my boys were little. Those occurrences were more of this variety: “You’re going to be late for school!” “Get in the car!” or “Where are your shoes?” So, when I heard about a class that encourages you to start your day screaming, I was curious. The platform, called Open, is an in-person and online mindfulness studio that includes breathwork, meditation, and yoga instruction. Some of the breathwork classes include screaming. I’ll admit, the classes weren’t what I expected—which is a good thing. I envisioned jumping right into a scream. Instead, you build up to it with several minutes of active breathing, crescendoing with a guttural yell. While there are several options, the class I took lasts 20 minutes and includes rounds of breathing exercises. You take two quick inhale breaths in through your mouth—the first to fill air near your belly, and the second to the top of your chest near your heart. Then you release the air with one exhale, also through your mouth. The exercise is done in quick succession, which after a while made me feel tingly and lightheaded. A round lasts about five minutes. At the end, you take a deep breath in and hold it for 10 seconds. Then you exhale and hold empty lungs for another 10 seconds. After the second round, the breathholding lasts 20 seconds, and after the third round, you hold your breath for 30 seconds. The screaming comes in after the last round of active breathing exercises. You take a deep inhale and then let out a scream. Repeat as many times as you want. The class I took is led by Open breathworks instructor Ally Maz. “This type of class is what we call upregulating,” says Maz. “It lifts the heart rate and works on endurance for performance and mental clarity. It’s similar to [Dutch fitness guru] Wim Hof breathing exercises.” Active breathwork can help you release stress at the beginning of your day and connect to your body. After the third morning taking the class, I started to feel more in control of my day. But why the screaming? Active upregulating breathwork is energizing. Screaming can help you get out emotions you may not know you’re holding. “When we hold the classes in person, people will scream, and then they’ll either cry or laugh because it’s like, ‘Oh my God, I’ve been holding on to that thing,’” says Maz. “There’s a transformational moment. It can be scary to hear your voice, especially as a female because we’re not always in touch with our rage or have a lot of ways to use our voice in the world. We can be hard on ourselves and may be holding onto guilt or shame. Stuff starts bubbling up, and screaming is an energy release.”

96

I didn’t cry or laugh, but I did feel lighter after the scream. Eventually, I increased the number of times I screamed because it felt empowering. Other forms of breathwork Breathing—without the screaming—can also circumvent stress. I also used the platform to do quick classes that are designed to help calm you. “Downregulated breathwork practices slow the heart rate and help you recover, rest, and sleep better, which is also helpful for anyone struggling with anxiety or panic,” says Maz. “It’s all how you manipulate the breath. Different patterns have different outcomes.” Maz calls this type of breathing a sigh of relief. Inhale through your nose, and exhale through your mouth. “That stimulates the vagus nerve, and it sets off a neurotransmitter that essentially goes to your heart and says, ‘Hey, heart, slow down,’” she says. “The breath shifts us from the fight or flight state back into parasympathetic, which is the rest and digest part of the nervous system. It helps open the lungs and reset the body. So many of us are sitting on our computers, typing, and not focusing on our breath.” Breathwork is one of Open’s most popular types of classes, says founder Raed Khawaja.

“You can actually discover a lot when you start to pay attention to how you breathe,” he says. The more breathwork practice you do, the more you remember to take a deeper inhale, adds Maz. “I feel more at ease being in traffic, or when the stress response comes in,” she says. “I know if I can slow my breath down, I’ll slow my heart rate down, and stimulate my vagus nerve.” I tend to be a breath holder, either when I’m feeling stressed or in deep focus with work. I don’t realize I’m doing it until I release the breath. Getting in tune with my breathing felt very foreign at first, but it’s definitely a valuable tool I can use on demand when I start to feel tension. So, after taking classes for a week, will I keep up the screaming? Probably not every day. Maz screams weekly and says it helps her feel calmer in her life. This seems like a cadence I’ll try. “I would call it a safe avenue to get that emotion out of your body,” says Maz. “Then it’s not coming out in road rage or at your partner or being suppressed with alcohol or numbed out through binge watching TV. It’s a really healthy way to get some of that emotion out of your body.”

FORGET THE LADDER

Here’s a better framework for your professional journey By Bridget Thoreson—Zapier

Something seemed very wrong with the way I’d been taught to think about my career progression. Like so many of us, I’d heard professional journeys described as climbing a ladder or following a path. But as I moved forward in my work as a journalist, I wasn’t moving in a straight line. The field I was pursuing, called audience engagement, was relatively new. I certainly hadn’t taken any courses on it in college, and two of the companies I would later work for didn’t even exist when I graduated. How was I supposed to know which path to take when it was still under construction? I also didn’t see the ultimate goal of my career as reaching the top of the food chain. I have no desire to be a CEO. And I kept meeting talented professionals, people I admired greatly, who viewed the twists and turns of their careers as a drawback, not a benefit. With an apologetic air, they would talk about how they explored different areas of their work and how they struggled to come up with a simple, clean story to explain their résumés. So I started telling students to consider their careers not as a linear progression straight up or ahead, but as a river delta—a fertile area to explore that flows toward an ultimate objective. Finding your flow A secret I only fully realized recently: I am not a robot. Some days I have more energy than others, or I’m better able to think of the big picture. And my work histor y also has periods of great change and some slower spells. Could it be that I don’t need to move through my career at a steady pace, rung by inevitable rung? Instead, I’ve come to accept that ever ything happens in its own time. Rather than feeling stuck on a career ladder when I haven’t shifted roles for a while, I can rest secure in the knowledge that a river always flows, no matter how slowly. As long as I’m learning, I’m moving toward my ultimate goal, or ocean. For me, it’s not about climbing to the top. We can each define our own destinations. Once we do, it becomes clearer which choices will help us reach that ocean. This also helps with career changes. On a career ladder, you might “lose” a rung or have to start climbing again at a new organization. It feels like a step back. A river’s cur ves and changes in direction are all part of the journey. What came before informs what flows after. This takes some of the pressure off job-hunting decisions, too. While a career ladder has only one direction, a career river can create a delta of many different paths, all equally valid to pursue. Not only is it OK to shift directions, it’s expected. We need to give ourselves the freedom to explore what matters to us instead of locking ourselves to one inflexible path. Navigating obstacles When I first tweeted about the career river, one

98

of the commenters shared a therapeutic method used in occupational therapy, called the Kawa Model. This model uses a river metaphor to see how clients want to live their lives, and includes considering the circumstances that block your progress as rocks in the river. If you embrace your career as a river instead of a ladder, you’re better able to confront these obstacles. When you reach a ceiling on the career ladder, the only way you can keep going is to shatter it. When your career river encounters an obstacle, you can go around it, or over it, or car ve through it. You may be able to get past what’s blocking your way quickly, or it may take some time; but in either case, you have several ways to get where you’re tr ying to go. Cooperation, not competition I’m not the lone-wolf journalist you see in movies. I wasn’t interested in winning Pulitzers or breaking the big investigative stor y solo. (Nor was I one of those rom-com heroines working at a magazine who never seems to file a stor y.)

In fact, I only became a reporter so I could one day be an editor. What I was most interested in was working with others to make our entire newspaper better. Today, I work on collaborative projects among many newsrooms to create more meaningful and impactful journalism. So, a career model that celebrated stepping on others or pushing them aside to reach my goals never felt right to me. Working with others is central to what I do and what I care about. No river is truly alone: It’s fed by many tributaries along the way and contributes to other rivers in turn. Ever y time rivers join together, they become stronger. My career is richer—not weaker—for having others contribute their expertise. A career ladder creates no value except for the person climbing it, while a career river feeds an entire ecosystem. I’d rather live in a professional world of rivers where we all can go with the flow together. Photo by Anaya Katlego on Unsplash.

HOW TO TRAIN YOUR AR GLASSES

Facebook collected 3,000-plus hours of video By Mark Sullivan

Facebook says it’s designing a pair of augmented reality glasses that can add digital content to the world in front of us. They might be years away from shipping. And to be useful to us—to walk us through a pizza recipe or help us find the car keys—they need to offer a built-in assistant with some serious AI smarts. The challenge is getting enough video footage—shot from the perspective of the user—to train the assistant to make inferences about the world as seen through the lenses of the glasses.

That kind of first-person training video is scarce. So Facebook partnered with 13 universities to create a large new data set of “egocentric” training video called Ego4D. The universities recruited a total of 855 people in nine countries to strap on GoPro cameras to collect the video. In all, participants captured 3,025 hours of first-person video from their everyday lives. The new data set will help Facebook researchers begin the process of creating and training an AI assistant to understand how users interact with other people, objects, and the environment around them. The AI, Facebook says, will be trained to recall things a user has seen or heard in the past to help with present activities, and to anticipate things the user might need in the future. Facebook has boiled those general concepts down into five more-specific AI tasks, which hint at how the company sees its future AR glasses being useful. Facebook’s lead researcher on the Ego4D project, Kristen Grauman, told me the tasks were chosen based on how well they “span the fundamentals needed to build any or many applications.” “Episodic memory” simply allows an assistant to recall something recorded by the glasses in the past. For instance, the AI assistant might recall and display the location of a lost item such as 102

a set of keys. It might even display within the glasses the actual footage of the user placing the item in a certain location. “Forecasting” analyzes a present activity and then suggests what the user might or should do next. It might suggest the next step in a recipe, for example. “Object manipulation” might analyze how a user is handling an object, and make suggestions on how to do it better. For instance, the AI assistant might teach a percussion student how to hold drumsticks properly. “Audio-visual conversation transcription” listens to social conversations the user has, and records them or transcribes them into text that could be recalled later. If you’re following a recipe, you might call up something your grandmother said in the past about a secret cooking tip, for example. “Social interaction” adds a layer onto the audio-visual conversation transcription task, Grauman says, by detecting “who is looking at me and when, who’s paying attention to me, and who’s talking to me.” Grauman says that the data set created by Facebook and its university partners contains anywhere from 50 to 800 hours of video footage for each of the use cases. Figuring out what it showed involved plenty of human labor:

“Someone watched the video and every time something happened, [they] paused and wrote a sentence about it,” she says. The process yielded about 13 sentences per minute. In all, the annotation job took a quarter of a million hours of work by professional labelers. But these annotations are vital for teaching the AI models to make inferences and recall things. “It’s really cool because it gives us the language-vision connection and it gives us a way to index the data from the get-go,” Grauman says. The data set will lay the groundwork from which researchers can push the AI to understand a variety of everyday tasks the user might need help with. But training an AI model to classify and predict the universe of things, people, and situations a user might encounter during their day is a very big challenge, and Facebook has a long way to go toward producing a helpful and versatile assistant. “The first real barrier is the data, so we’re taking a good crack at that through this contribution,” Grauman says. “But even with the data, now the fun begins in earnest as far as the core research challenges.”

LAZINESS WINS

One unlikely culprit to burnout? Your lack of laziness By Garrett Mitchell

Are you tired of being tired? If this question resonates with you, it’s not your imagination. The workforce is working harder and for longer hours than the decades before. Since 1979, American workers’ net productivity grew by 72.2%, even though hourly pay only increased by 17.2%—meaning that although productivity has increased, workers aren’t taking home the benefits of that increased productivity. Advances in communication technologies have also come with significant psychological downsides: The proliferation of proliferation of smartphones and the associated expectation that we’ll always be online has increased burnout, as the boundaries between work and home become increasingly blurry. Social media also means that we are constantly comparing ourselves to the best-curated versions of other people; which makes us feel like everyone else is more productive than we are. The end result of all of these factors is that you can feel like you’re never doing enough, or that you’re falling behind. But in reality, you’re probably doing the best you can, which is perfectly okay. You’re doing more work than you might think Even if it’s largely invisible from the outside, all mental activity has an associated physical cost. Scientists have observed that your brain adjusts its metabolic output when making decisions in response to the exertion of mental energy. Chess is typically thought of as a mental game rather than a physical game, but chess grandmasters often burn up to 6,000 calories per day when participating in high-level tournaments due to the intense stress of the strategic decisions they’re making. Feelings of laziness are usually there for a good reason You’ve probably been trained to think that feeling unmotivated or directionless means that there’s something wrong with you, and that if you just try harder, you’ll be able to push through. But rather than viewing these feelings as a reflection of something negative about your character, they should really be viewed as your body’s early warning system. When you’re overworked, you’re less effective, focused, and productive. Laziness can help us find the most efficient path forward Doing more work isn’t always a good thing, especially if you can accomplish the same task faster or with less effort by using an alternate approach. Industrial engineer Frank Bunker Gilbreth, one of the pioneers of scientific management in the United States, got his start working as a bricklayer. By filming his fellow bricklayers, which you watch on YouTube, he was able to analyze 104

the motions they took while working in order to determine the most effective technique. He identified that the most labor-intensive aspect of bricklaying came when the bricklayers had to bend over to pick up their bricks and mortar. His solution was to develop an adjustable scaffold that would keep the bricks at a more advantageous height. Ultimately, Gilbreth was able to reduce the number of motions associated with laying a single brick from 18 movements to 4.5 movements— which tripled productivity, reduced worker fatigue, and improved workers’ long-term health. How to lead a productive lazy life With all of this in mind, the benefits of allowing yourself to relax and embrace laziness are clear. This can be difficult to do since we live in a world that’s designed to keep us busy and distracted; even still, there are tactics you can use which can give you space to be lazy and relax. Don’t be afraid of letting some things go: just because you can spend time and effort doesn’t mean that you need to. Not all inbound communication is equally important, but the notifications on our phones and in our inboxes are equally intrusive, which can make every message feel equally important, even when it isn’t. You might think that taking in and retaining every single piece of new information will make you feel more secure, but doing so can ultimately create stress commensurate with that amount of extra effort.

Napoleon reportedly had a unique way of dealing with his mail: He would only open a few letters which came from “extraordinary couriers,” and would simply leave all the rest unread for three weeks. His reasoning behind this was that minor, non-urgent requests would solve themselves, and that his time was better spent on the few tasks which truly required his attention. Depending on your situation, it might not be practical for you to leave your emails unread for three weeks, but the lesson we can take from this is that you can conserve your time and energy for what actually matters by strategically postponing demands on your attention. One way to do this is by adopting better tools that account for human limitations and simplify the decisions that you have to make. Machines are good at performing routine tasks according to specific rules, whereas humans are good at creatively tackling novel problems. So, for example, you could take inspiration from Napoleon and set automated reminders on your inbound emails to strategically postpone addressing them to a more convenient time in the future. Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, we need to be kinder to ourselves and one another. It’s okay to need breaks; allow yourself the time that you need to relax and breathe. Hard work is good, but not when it comes at the expense of the rest that we all need and deserve. Photo by Zhang Kenny on Unsplash.

FASTER COMPUTING

3 quick, surefire ways to speed up your Windows computer By Doug Aamoth

If you’re looking for a new computer, it’s the most wonderful time of the year. After all, back-to-school brings big sales for PC makers and decent bargains for all of us—not just people buying machines for students. But if you really want to save money, here’s some news that’s also wonderful: You might be able to squeeze an extra year or two out of that aging Windows machine of yours if you’re willing to spend a few minutes tweaking a handful of settings. These tips are for Windows 10 and don’t require a computer science degree. You can do this: It’s easy! Prevent programs from automatically running Windows’ slowness can be caused by a variety of factors, but a major culprit is having too many programs running in the background. And some programs think they’re so important that they should automatically start running when your computer is turned on. Spoiler: They’re not that important. By preventing such programs from automatically running at startup, you’ll free up system resources to run programs you actually want to use. To disable startup apps, search for “Startup Apps” in the search bar next to the Start button (or click the Start button, then the little Settings gear icon, then System, then Startup). You’ll see a list of all the apps that feel like they need to run when your computer boots up. Lots of Adobe stuff there, huh? You can turn off just about everything in this menu, although it’s OK to leave turned on entries mentioning Intel, Realtek, and Windows Security since they genuinely help with graphics, sound, and security features. Once you’ve turned off a bunch of stuff, reboot your computer, and with any luck, you’ll notice it loads up faster and operates a bit more smoothly. Tone down the visuals By default, Windows sports a heaping helping of visual effects: animations, shadows, fading, and a bunch of other little flourishes to make your computing experience more pleasant. However, these effects can seriously bog down an overworked machine. While turning them off might make using Windows a bit less visually appealing, it can work wonders to put a little zip back into your PC. To do so, search next to the Start button for “Performance” and select “Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows” from the results (or Start > Settings > System > About and then click “Advanced system settings” in the right sidebar, followed by “Settings…” in the Performance section of the Advanced tab). Now from here, you could select the “Adjust for best performance” option and call it a day. 108

That’ll turn off everything, basically, but it’ll also make text look borderline unreadable. So I’d suggest turning everything off and then ticking the “Smooth edges of screen fonts” back on. Hit OK and watch as your PC visually transmogrifies back into something that still looks like Windows—albeit a version from 20 years ago or so. There’s one more visual setting to tweak, though it’s not in this section. So close out of here, rightclick on a blank area of your desktop, and choose the “Personalize” setting. From here, click Colors in the left-hand menu and then toggle off the “Transparency effects” setting. Listen, I get it. You might hate how Windows looks and feels now. But it’s fast! And you can try toggling various visual features back on one at a time to see if you can strike a happy medium between prettiness and performance. Play around a bit. Check your power plan If you’ve followed the previous two tips, you should be enjoying a faster computer by now. There’s still

one last thing to check, though. In the search bar next to the Start button, search for “Power” and click “Choose a power plan” from the list of options that surface (or Start > Settings > System > Power & sleep > “Additional power settings” under the “Related settings” section). You should see a handful of plans available here. “Balanced” is OK, especially for a laptop that you use away from its charger on a regular basis. If you’re on a desktop or a laptop that’s rarely unplugged, feel free to switch to the “High performance” plan. We just want to make sure that the “Power saver” plan isn’t selected here, because it noticeably slows down your machine in order to conserve energy. You can also click the “Change plan settings” link next to each plan to choose when the display turns off and when the computer puts itself to sleep. If you’re feeling especially ambitious, click the “Change advanced power settings” from this section to really dig into individual power-specific settings. Photo by Andrew M on Unsplash.

NETFLIX STAR, DHRUV SEHGAL, WAS ONCE A KUWAIT RESIDENT

Dhruv Sehgal on his Netflix show Little Things, his childhood in Kuwait and his teen heartthrob status By Ahmad Rashad Arafa

Like others who put stock in pseudo-sciences, I personally always had a penchant for believing in signs, or whatever I discern to be a sign. When I first stumbled upon Dhruv Sehgal’s Instagram account a few years ago, after watching my first episode of his hit Netflix show, Little Things, what piqued my interest is that he posted the exact same song on his Instagram account that I posted on mine. I wouldn’t have made anything of had it not been a fairly obscure song by the fairly obscure indie-pop band, Alvvays. I chose to reach out to him and I’m glad I did as we quickly discovered that we have a lot of other random shared interests - a love for Alexander Payne films, French philosophers, Marathi writers and we both agree that The Strokes’ debut album Is This It? heralded a new era of rock music in the 2000s. Within a few minutes of our first conversation, I discovered that we had something else in common. “Are you sick?” he asked after hearing me sniffling. “Aisi nahin bro, sirf todha thanda hoon” (“it’s nothing like that bro, I’m just a bit cold”) I said in my broken Hindi. “Yeah, I remember Kuwait being cold.” Dhruv seemed to be waiting for the opportune moment to let me know that he used to live here. I was taken aback. Kuwait is a small, unassuming countr y that, like other small, unassuming countries, has a dearth of worldwide celebrities. “I was in Kuwait from fourth grade to seventh grade, from 1999 to 2002. My parents were diplomats so we stayed at the Indian embassy and I went to Fahaheel Al Watanieh Indian Private School.” Shortly after returning to India and graduating college, Dhruv made a mark for himself writing and acting in viral comedy sketches for YouTube that raked in tens of millions of views. One of the sketches he created blossomed into the fullfledged show, Little Things. The show, which revolves around a young couple navigating through the terrains of life in the sprawling metropolis that is Bombay, proved so monstrously successful that Netflix picked it up for its second season. Now that it’s on its fourth and, much to its many fans’ chagrin, final season, I decided to take the opportunity to talk to Dhruv about his show’s final chapter, his time in Kuwait and how his sudden trajector y to Bollywood stardom reconstructed his life. 110

[Continued...]

When asked about his fondest memories in Kuwait, Dhruv, true to his screen persona, remembers the little things fondly, “I remember having kebabs that have spoiled me for life, birthday parties at Pizza Hut and I also remember Hardees which I sadly haven’t had anywhere else in my life.” Oh that elusive Carl’s Jr. “I also remember the beautiful ocean drives my family and I used to take and Kuwait’s abundance of space.” Dhruv also has a soft spot for the mall culture here, which he considers to be his “first tr yst with capitalism.” He may not have spent his entire childhood in Kuwait but the countr y evidently left a lasting impression on him, “a lot of my current interests came from the time I spent in Kuwait; the fact that I’m a huge Arsenal supporter and my taste in music, which I credit to Kuwait’s 99.7 FM English station.” The fourth and final season of Little Things premiered on Netflix on October 15 where it quickly became one of the streaming platform’s top ten shows in India, UAE and other countries. It also struck a chord once again with its dedicated fan following in Turkey and telenovelaloving Latin American countries like Brazil and Mexico. A departure from the third season, which was more languid in its pacing and had a heavy air of Euro existentialism - a change inspired by Dhruv’s personal muse, Lena Dunham, and her zeitgeisty show, Girls – the fourth season can be considered a return to the show’s warm and fuzzy earlier seasons. “It is a back-to-basics of sorts. It’s also the first season I didn’t write. I’m happy with the outcome though, there’s a fair bit of natural progression in this final season.” The general critical consensus is that the final season is a fitting conclusion but I personally found that it lacks the show’s trademark verisimilitude. Still, the show has ended and Dhruv’s life will most likely never go back to what it once was. Scroll down any of the comments sections of his Instagram or Facebook posts and you’ll know why. Girls dig Dhruv. I mean they really like him. It took me a while but I think I finally figured out the reason. From the outset, Dhruv appears to be your ever yday handsome, sweet “Punju munda”, but watch a season of his show and/or spend an afternoon with him, and you realize that he’s also a vulnerable, brooding, melancholy, almost Heathcliffian figure. 112

[...Continued]

Promo still for Netflix’s Little Things season four While he and I were taking a short stroll around the neighborhood of Dadar in Bombay a couple years ago, we were soon met by a flock of eager-eyed college girls. They were hugging him, taking selfies with him and unflinchingly baring their souls to him. They were enraptured. At first I thought it was endearing, I even volunteered to take pictures of them with Dhruv, but then it quickly descended into something that I could easily see be potentially suffocating. Dhruv’s musings on the mercurial nature of fame echo other celebrities’, “I still don’t know how to process it. I think I can only handle small amounts of it. What I’m grateful for is that it has given my work credibility and that it’s also given me access to a lot of random acts of kindness from complete strangers. But I still find it all weird. I feel like I’m constantly being watched.”

MUST-HAVE WINTER BOOTS FROM MILANO

We’re making strong strides this winter in style and comfort By bazaar staff

There are so many things to love about winter. Cozy socks, hot cocoa, camping, but our favorite has to be the footwear. After months of sandals, flip flops and slip-ons we are ready to hop into something more substantial and can help us explore more of nature as well as enjoy the newly reinstated outdoor festivals. Lucky for us, this season’s trends are on point for our budding active lifestyle.

114

A BLOCK HEEL The pandemic may have messed with our ability or desire to totter on stilettos. We’re so glad that block heels are all the rage. Even the most uncoordinated person can rock these all day without tripping. We love the simplicity of the Finn, with a pretty buckle and pointed toe. The deep tan and knotted bow are held through with a brass loop to make it look sophisticated. Crafted from smooth leather-like material with a brushed effect to give it a more authentic and worn-in look. We can imagine it with jeans and skirts. Or you can opt for a more classical looking boot in black leather and a zipper on the side, which is a timeless addition to any wardrobe. EXPAND YOUR NEUTRALS Many of us like sticking to neutrals in our footwear so we can wear them with more outfits, so we end up with a shoe closet full of brown and black. This season we’re stepping out of our comfort zone and embracing olive green. It gives us an expanded color palette to work with and adds fun to our wardrobe. The Danyalee is the perfect shade, looks rugged but is super comfy. The camo print pocket strap buckled on the boots gives it an added uniqueness. White might not be a conventional choice for winter, but it is so much more fun. We love the white Renee, the off-white chunky ankle boots made from soft panels of leather-like upper. The pull tabs and side zips ensure they’re easy to get on and off and the laces give the boot a rugged look. We can’t wait to pair them with coats and sweatpants for a laid back look. HEELED HIKERS We love the look of a hiking boot and have always wanted more from it. The Hakamia is available in brown and black and can do just that. The ankle

boot is made from a smooth, durable leather and is lightly padded around the ankle for comfort. The chunky cleated block heel is practical enough to wear all day and pairs perfectly with cropped jeans or a skirt. WEATHERED LEATHER Real leather ages beautifully. It darkens with use and becomes more individual and unique. And now you don’t have to do all that hard work. The Erol arrives already showing some amazing color differences to give it more character and style. The dark brown lace-up chukka boot is made with leather-like material giving it a rich shine. The pull tab webbing at the back gives it a contrast pop up look. BEYOND SMOOTH We love smooth leather but we also appreciate the beauty and feel of suede. The Aliston offers a different look this season. The black lace-up chukka boot is made with a leather-like upper that has a suede finish. The rubber sole has a contrast color stripe that gives it a definitive look. TEXTURE, TEXTURE, TEXTURE You are still going to need a bag, no matter what boots you go for. And we have noticed that texture is where it’s at! Whether it is quilted, woven or a faux croc or snake print, your bag needs more than just smooth leather. Bag structures are getting simpler because all the detail is in the material they’re made from. Shop for your new favorite boots on the Milano website kuwait.milanomena.com or download the app from the App or Google Play Store. For updates and news follow @milanomiddleeast on Instagram.

YOU NEED A FRIEND

Tackling a big project? You need an accountability buddy By Art Markman

The hardest projects to complete are big ones that require a lot of sustained effort over a period of time in order to see results. Writing a book, completing a report, or expanding your network of potential clients are all tasks that have this character. The most difficult parts of these tasks come in what I like to call the “chewy middle” of the project. It can be easy to get started—there is great excitement at the front end of a project. As you get close to completing the goal, you are motivated to get it done. But, once you’re well past the beginning and the end is nowhere in sight, it can be hard to keep making progress.

That’s where social pressure can be helpful. Human beings are a social species. We have dominated planet earth because of our ability to cooperate. As a result, we are wired to want to help each other achieve our goals. It is worthwhile taking advantage of that when you find your motivation to finish a project waning. That is where an accountability buddy can come in. You can empower a colleague to help you continue progressing on a project. There are several ways this can work. You buddy might be someone working toward a similar goal. If you’re a writer, you can hang out with another writer who is also working on a longterm project. If the two of you work in parallel, you can spur each other to keep working—even on days when you’d rather not. This also works with exercise. It is easy to decide you’re not going to go for your run when you’re tired in the morning. It is harder to call your buddy to tell them you’re

116

cancelling a run you were planning to do together. Your buddy might be someone you permit to nag you about your progress. In this case, you are expecting regular check-ins with your buddy who will want to know what you have accomplished since the last time you talked. You can’t just tell your buddy that you got some stuff done. You’re going to have to give them some details. There are two nice facets of this approach. One is that you will be motivated to have enough to tell your buddy at your next meeting. The second is that you’ll get a concrete reminder of how much you have accomplished from one visit to the next. If your motivation is really lagging, you might want to go the extra step and sign a commitment contract. The idea behind the commitment contract is that you are promising a buddy that you’ll do a certain amount of work. If you don’t get that work done, then you actually have to pay

money to your buddy (or give them something else of value). A particularly effective form of the commitment contract obligates your buddy to take the money they get from you and to give it to a charity you hate. It is important to remember that accountability buddies are most effective at helping you keep a project moving when it is in danger of stalling. The power of your buddy will wane over time. If you really hate working on the project, it will simply get harder to make progress on it at all. So, while you’re working on the project, look for aspects of it that you actually enjoy. After all, the hardest things to complete are the ones for which what you want to do conflicts with what you believe you should do. If you can learn to enjoy the things that you also should be doing, then you can remove that conflict. Photo by Markus Spiske on Unsplash.

WEIGHT MATTERS

Electric vehicles have a weight problem By Adele Peters

Ford’s new F-150 Lightning, the all-electric version of its most popular truck, is more powerful and faster than the previous gas versions of the vehicle, and designed to tempt truck drivers to decarbonize. But the truck is also much heavier, weighing in at 6,500 pounds, or 35% more than the gas-powered F-150. That’s mostly because of the enormous battery inside.

A new op-ed in Nature looks at the weight of electric vehicles—and why it’s important to make them lighter. “What caught my eye in the announcement of the F-150 Lightning was just how heavy it was . . . and then, when looking more closely, just broadly how much heavier EVs are than their gas counterparts,” says coauthor Blake Shaffer, an assistant professor in the department of economics and school of public policy at the University of Calgar y. Batteries aren’t as energy dense as fuel, and as vehicles get heavier, they get more dangerous. (Even without batteries, vehicles have been getting much heavier in general: Pickups are now 32% heavier than they used to be.) In a crash between a lighter-weight vehicle and a heavier vehicle, someone in the lighter car is more likely to die. Pedestrians are also more at risk. Heavier vehicles also cause more pollution from tiny particles that wear off tires, and they require more materials and energy to produce, adding to the total environmental footprint. In the op-ed, the authors do a rough calculation to look at the societal costs of heavy EVs. “I realized that this was actually a really big 118

number,” Shaffer says. “It’s comparable to the climate benefits we’re seeking.” In countries where the grid isn’t as clean, the cost of the extra lives lost because of heavy vehicles can rival the benefits of avoided emissions. That’s not to say that electric vehicles are bad, and the case gets stronger as the grid gets cleaner. But the researchers wanted to point out that governments should be thinking about how to address vehicle weight even as they push for more EVs. They suggest that heavier vehicles should pay a higher registration fee to help incentivize consumers to buy lighter cars. (Registration fees can also help offset losses from gas taxes as fewer cars use gas.) The government can also help pay for R&D to improve technology, so it can be deployed faster. Some automakers are working on ways to incorporate batteries into the frame of a vehicle to reduce weight, for example. New materials in other parts of the car can help make it lighter and stronger, making up for the heavy batter y. And cameras, sensors, and other tech already common in some cars can be used to help avoid crashes.

Batteries also keep improving and getting cheaper; so far, automakers have used those improvements to boost the range and power of their vehicles. But at some point, especially as it becomes easier to find a charger anywhere, it won’t be critical to add more range—most car trips are short, anyway—and batteries could shrink. The authors also argue that electric vehicles aren’t the only answer to shrink the carbon footprint of transportation. “Going from a gas car to an electric car kind of preser ves the current order,” says Shaffer. Road networks stay in place, and people continue their habit of driving. “The really big shift is to change how we get around,” he says. “That’s the concept of driving less— that’s about transit-oriented development, about more inner-city density, where walking and biking can be more convenient and more feasible, and more importantly, safer. . . . The best way to reduce the damages from driving is to drive less.”

LET’S PLAY! Self-care, but make it video games By bazaar staff

This weekend, I suggest you schedule some self-care. But there will be no face masks, mani-pedis or smoothies involved. It’s going to be mayhem, excitement, pushing your boundaries and challenges by playing some exciting (or relaxing) video games. I am not really a “gamer”, but I have a curated list of games on my phone that I play depending on my mood. Some I play just for fun, while others, I have found, are great for dealing with anxiety attacks. As a child, my favorite game was Tetris. The music just shuts off the part of my brain that worries about bills and deadlines so the fun can begin. My first brush with the game was back in the 90s when you needed a GameBoy, but today my Tetriminos are colorful since I play on my phone now. I reach for it when I am stressed and need to bring awareness to something other than my stressors.

122

Since then, I have found many games that will make you feel better after a round or two of playing. Some are quite complex and need strategizing, and long-term planning, while others are perfect for a couple of minutes. Play One Handed Whenever I am feeling stressed or anxious, I will fire up a quick game that only takes a couple of minutes to play and there are no consequences to my winning or losing. They’re also ones that can be played with one hand while I hold my phone so it is perfect for

Get Your Heart Pumping The Wii introduced many of us to the idea of gamified exercise. If you have ever played Just Dance, then you get what I mean, if you haven’t then you have no idea what you are missing out on. You have to move the handheld controllers in moves that correspond to the one on the screen to score. I have played by myself and I have challenged others to dance offs. I am the first to confess that I have two left feet, but the exhilaration of tr ying to keep up with the moves and the joy of getting to the end of a song and getting most of it right is so much fun. I would take that instead of going to the gym anyday. Now, you can beat your friends at Scrabble even if they’re seven time zones away. So share the fun and invite your pals to some friendly (or not) competition. To try: Exploding Kittens, Words with Friends Simulations Simulation games are fun, especially when there’s an added social aspect to them. These

are the ones you are usually in for the long-haul. You can create a world/life that you aspire to or just enjoy messing with your characters and invite your friends to flex your creative muscles. My favorite one in this categor y is hands-down Animal Crossing; it’s a time commitment and will eat up all the hours you can throw at it but it is a stress-free escape into a world of your own making. To try: Stardew Valley, Fallout Shelter This doesn’t even scratch the sur face of what’s available. But it is an invitation to “nongamers” to a world of fun. That said, games can be addictive and you want to make sure that you take breaks, stay hydrated and make sure you stretch and move around ever y so often. GO LOVE YOURSELF WITH THE BODY SHOP NEW BODY BUTTERS The most sustainable and nourishing Body Butters ever! By bazaar staff

In 1992, the very first Body Butter was born. Created in the kitchen of Dame Anita Roddick –Founder of The Body Shop – the very first Mango Body Butter was given its name by her daughter who, while making a piece of toast, simply said “it’s like butter… for your body”. This seriously rich formula transformed moisturiser application forever, from the humble squirt to the generous, body-loving scoop. The rest is history.

The Body Shop Body Butters 128

Today, these iconic moisturisers are loved so much that one is sold every 3 seconds across the world. And these body-loving favourites just got even better. The new Body Butters are now registered by The Vegan Society (a gold standard for vegan certification), made with at least 95% ingredients of natural origin, love skin with 96hour moisture and come in their most sustainable packaging yet. Just grab the best Body Butter for your skin type (there’s a tub for every beautifully unique body). Scoop, spread and slather it on. Don’t be shy. The Body Shop owes a lot to its famous Body Butters – and to beautifully unique bodies around the globe – for helping them reach cult status. Their new and improved Body Butters are not only their best yet but are a bid to give back to those beautiful bodies. After all, every body deserves to be loved and pampered, right? And these aren’t just any Body Butters…they’re an act of self-love. So, every time you scoop, spread and slather on some Body Butter, take a moment to appreciate every inch of your body – yep, even those wobbly bits and curvy bobs (we all have them). A VEGAN-FRIENDLY, BODY-LOVING FORMULA The new and improved Body Butters – 13 to be exact – are all registered by The Vegan Society and made with at least 95% natural origin ingredients, including handcrafted Community Fair Trade shea butter from Ghana. The Body Shop harnesses the nourishing power of Community Fair Trade shea butter from the Tungteiya Women’s Association in northern Ghana, helping to provide financial independence for Ghanaian women.

Shea Nuts

Today, over 600 women from 11 villages handcraft the shea butter using an 18-stage process of traditional techniques, passed on mother to daughter for generations. Delivering 96 hours of intense moisture, their Body Butters leave your skin feeling soft and smooth without feeling sticky. In fact, in a The Body Shop study, over 90% users agreed the formula easily melts into skin and has a nonsticky feel and over 86% agreed the Body Butters made them feel good in their skin. THEIR MOST SUSTAINABLE BODY BUTTER YET With new fully recyclable packaging, these are The Body Shop’s most sustainable Body Butters ever. They’re all made with aluminium lids and 100% recycled plastic, including Community Fair Trade recycled plastic collected off the streets of Bengaluru, India, through The Body Shop’s trade partnership with Plastics for Change. Because, let’s face it, there’s an abundance of plastic in our environment already. With almost a third of India’s waste being uncollected, it has given rise to 1.5 million unsung heroes known as ‘waste pickers’ who work tirelessly to clean up their streets. The Body Shop’s Community Fair Trade partnership with Plastics for Change not only helps tackle the existing plastic problem but helps support around 2,500 marginalised waste pickers in India with access to more sanitary working conditions and a fair price for the plastic waste they collect. As The Body Shop’s new recyclable Body Butter tubs are made with 100% recycled plastic, it helps reduce the use of virgin plastic in their tubs by 241 tonnes per year. So, be sure to recycle the lid and tub to show your planet some love.

WE’RE LIVING FOR BBQ WEDNESDAYS

AT THE RADISSON BLU HOTEL From the food to the vibes, our Wednesday nights are never going to be the same again! By bazaar staff

There’s nothing quite like planning an outing on a Wednesday night to feel like life has gone back to normal. We put on our nice shoes, spritzed on our glam perfume and headed for a fun night at one of our favorite haunts, The Radisson Blu Hotel. As this was their famous BBQ Wednesday night, we were expecting a conventional selection but were treated to so much more delightful dining experiences. It was exciting to be out on a weeknight, since it has become a rarity, but we were pining for grills, fall-offthe-bone meat and a night of great company and deep conversation. As we walked into the Al Bustan Restaurant, we noticed that there were lots of cooking stations and then even more outdoor live-stations in the terrace area. We opted for an outdoor table and planning our meal began. Trust us when we say, plan your meal strategy, as there is something to please every palate! 140

After we settled in and ordered our drinks, we took a moment just to appreciate how far we’ve come. We’re dining alfresco, the vibes are great and ever yone shared the same excited energy to be out and about at the beautiful grounds of the hotel. The staff at the hotel and the restaurant are ever-so-gracious, and you feel that you’ve come home to a feast that’s being prepared right before your eyes. The appetizer buffet was expansive with a huge area of oriental and international salads, sushi, maki rolls and soup. The Cheese Display caught our eye with the fancy French cheeses on display and beautiful layout. Ever ything was so color ful, fresh and enticing. We carefully loaded our plates because we didn’t want to miss out on anything. From sushi, to beautiful hot smoked salmon that’s prepared in-house and delectable blue potato salad, and ever ything in between, we were ready to feast. We also made a note to come back to the Cheese station, because it is truly not to be missed. We were not expecting a Pasta or Pizza station, but the kids were lined up for their favorites. They were choosing from ravioli, penne, spaghetti, tagliatelle and fusilli, then adding the sauce they preferred and garnishing. We absolutely love that the Radisson Blu Hotel always thinks of the entire family when they plan their famous BBQ Wednesdays, and just outside, we saw children clamor for sliders and shawarma, but more on this to follow shortly. The weather was beautiful and the music playing in the background was a throwback of sorts to remixes and covers of upbeat music from our childhood and teen years. More guests were starting to arrive and it was heartening to see groups of friends and families excited about getting some bonding time and sharing a delicious meal together. The sound of laughter, the sizzling on the grill and the footsteps of the staff making ever yone comfortable and happy made the mood even livelier and much lighter than anything we had experienced in months. It’s these little details that make your night, and we appreciated ever y moment as we continued to navigate our way around the various outdoor cooking stations that featured all the action. We headed to the Car ving Stations and were delighted with the selection on display. To claim that the display was showstopping would be an understatement! There was a whole lamb roast gleaming with the sheen of the fire, an entire roasted prime beef rib, roasted short loin and even oxtail stew. It wasn’t just meat; you could also get roasted salmon fillets and whole chickens cooked Mediterranean style. There were also some wonder ful sides like roasted vegetables, mashed and roasted potatoes and a beautiful creamy mushroom and lemon butter sauce that added a zesty twang to the mash. We diligently stood by and watched the chef car ve out gorgeous pieces of meat from different parts

of the Prime Rib. We can’t deny that we waited patiently as the car ving ran deeper, and we saw that red color of medium cooked and super well rested beef we were pining after. After we loaded our plates with lots of beef, roasted potatoes and sharp mustard, we were set for the night. The anticipation was building up by the time we got to the live meat station on charcoal and the clay oven and we were not disappointed. Offering a more Levantine BBQ experience, it is more than just grilling, it is a per formance

with live flames, naughty smoke and taste-bud tingling aromas. Shish Taouk, Shish Kebab, Thai Chicken, Kubedhe and JoJo kebab were just some of the available options. Shawarma is not a usual option at a BBQ, it just has to be there and we had so much fun watching the chef slice the chicken, layer it on to the fresh bread and choose our own additions. There was also a slider live station, where they were grilling burgers on the spot and building your slider with your choice of condiments.

If you are more of a seafood fan, then the Radisson Blu BBQ Wednesday is where you need to be. The live fish market on grill and charcoal features the catch of the day. The chefs expertly grill your choice of hamour, salmon, red snapper, king fish, fresh shrimps, shrimps, calamari, tuna or sea bass as you watch. Fish isn’t the only thing on the seafood menu either, lobster, fresh crabs, shum, sheri, Sultan Ibrahim and shrimp are also available. You will be amazed by how the expert chefs will cook your fresh seafood to per fection, ever y single time. There were even more live stations taking you to far flung culinar y destinations, like the Mongolian Station complete with a noodle bar and Tempura Station. There is so much to choose from and ever ywhere you look there

is something delicious calling your name. We tried Spanish Chicken Paella and a delicious Vegetable Korma too. The amount of choice is mind-boggling but allows you to sample so many different things. The beauty of the experience is being able to take an international culinar y tour, where you sample and revel in all of the different flavors. Ever ything we tried was cooked per fectly, and it goes to show all of the tireless work the expert team of chefs put in week in and week out to make sure that ever y BBQ Wednesday is consistently impressive. Even the shrewdest among us was stuffed by the end but we still wanted to indulge in dessert. We were advised by friends to arrive hungr y, and make sure to leave room for dessert. The dessert buffet was an explosion of

color, texture and variety. We counted more than fifty types of dessert including Asian, oriental and international. There were a couple of cute kids standing at the chocolate fountain, eyeswide with enthusiasm and palpable joy. And if you are tr ying to stick to your diet goals, there is a wide selection of fresh cut fruit. But really, do indulge if you can, as the bite sized apple pie and chocolate ganache delights are just the per fect sweet ending to an incredible evening. Al Bustan Restaurant is located in the Radisson Blu Hotel. For reservations call 2567 3410, visit the website radissonhotels.com/blu or follow @radissonblukuwait on Instagram for more information. The famous BBQ starts from 6:30pm on Wednesdays, so make sure to come early!

It is 1779 and Claire and Jamie are at last reunited with their daughter, Brianna, her husband, Roger, and their children on Fraser’s Ridge. Having the family together is a dream the Frasers had thought impossible. Yet even in the North Carolina backcountry, the effects of war are being felt. Tensions in the Colonies are great and local feelings run hot enough to boil Hell’s tea-kettle. Jamie knows loyalties among his tenants are split and it won’t be long until the war is on his doorstep. Brianna and Roger have their own worry: that the dangers that provoked their escape from the twentieth century might catch up to them. Sometimes they question whether risking the perils of the 1700s—among them disease, starvation, and an impending war—was indeed the safer choice for their family.

THE KOREAN VEGAN COOKBOOK

By Cassandra Leah Quave, Mystery

By Joanne Lee Molinaro, Cookbook

A leading medical ethnobotanist tells us the story of her quest to develop new ways to fight illness and disease through the healing powers of plants in this uplifting and adventure-filled memoir. Plants are the basis for an array of lifesaving and health-improving medicines we all now take for granted. Ever taken an aspirin? Thank a willow tree for that. What about lifesaving medicines for malaria? Some of those are derived from cinchona and wormwood. In today’s world of synthetic pharmaceuticals, scientists and laypeople alike have lost this connection to the natural world. But by ignoring the potential of medicinal plants, we are losing out on the opportunity to discover new lifesaving medicines needed in the fight against the greatest medical challenge of this century: the rise of the post-antibiotic era. Antibioticresistant microbes plague us all. Each year, 700,000 people die due to these untreatable infections; by 2050, 10 million annual deaths are expected unless we act now. 146

Joanne Lee Molinaro has captivated millions of fans with her powerfully moving personal tales of love, family, and food. In her debut cookbook, she shares a collection of her favorite Korean dishes, some traditional and some reimagined, as well as poignant narrative snapshots that have shaped her family history. As Joanne reveals, she’s often asked, “How can you be vegan and Korean?” Korean cooking is, after all, synonymous with fish sauce and barbecue. And although grilled meat is indeed prevalent in some Korean food, the ingredients that filled out bapsangs on Joanne’s table growing up—doenjang (fermented soybean paste), gochujang (chili sauce), dashima (seaweed), and more—are fully plant-based, unbelievably flavorful, and totally Korean.

They make ever y gathering all the more fun! Williams Sonoma understands that more is indeed, merrier. This is why the Peppermint Bark Truffles are the per fect companion to your festive get-togethers and giftgiving. These irresistible truffles are handcrafted using the finest and most traditional European techniques. The creation of each confection begins with a velvety chocolate ganache highlighted with the cool, refreshing essence of peppermint. For a delectable finishing touch, the truffles are enrobed in Guittard dark chocolate or white chocolate, then topped with crushed peppermint candy. Also per fectly giftable are the Bark Cookies, as these all-natural chocolate wafers are scintillatingly enrobed in a generous layer of the finest Guittard white chocolate infused with pure peppermint oil. A sprinkling of peppermint candy adds to the cookies’ wonder ful crunch. We can switch between sweet and savor y with no qualms whatsoever. We absolutely adore all things sweet but with a savor y edge! This is why the Peppermint Bark Pretzels are a total gamechanger. The salty crunch of pretzels gives Williams Sonoma’s famous peppermint bark a whole new taste sensation. They’ve basically combined two of our favorite things into one addictive offering, the savor y bite of pretzels with the velvety richness of peppermint bark. To make them, their dedicated chocolatiers bake batches of lightly salted mini pretzels in classic holiday shapes, then hand- dunk them in peppermint-infused dark chocolate or creamy white chocolate. A sprinkling of crushed peppermint candy adds a cool bite et voila, you’ve got the per fect holiday snack! We’re also quite obsessed with the decorative tin, which you can reuse for storing cookies and treats all throughout the year. We’re yipping with joy at these playful Peppermint Bark offerings! Makani by Alyasra Foods is the one-stop shop destination for quality food ingredients, from Certified-Angus Beef to the finest frozen seafood, and everything in between. It’s all about the Meat The first thing that comes to mind when you imagine a grill is meat, whether you are a fan of beef, lamb or veal, you are probably thinking of kafta skewers, steak or kebab. Makani has it all. There’s a wide range of cuts of Certified Angus Beef available, from Ribeye and Chuck Short Ribs to Sirloin and T-bone. You can also grab ground beef by Certified Angus Beef to make delicious kafta or even burgers. If you are not ready to make something from scratch, there are some great ready-to-cook options by Mr Cleavers like 156

the Gourmet Beef Cranberr y Sausage or Beef Mini Kebabs that will wow ever yone at the table. Veal lovers will appreciate the Striploin Steaks, Escalope and more. Chicken Chicken is also delicious when it is grilled. That beautiful and crunchy char just adds to the taste and texture. You can grill the Tender Chicken Breasts (Boneless and Skinless) by Sadia, whole or you can cube and marinate them for some fun shish tawooq, or if you don’t want to do the

hard work yourself, the Chicken Combination Barbeque is precut and placed on skewers that are ready for grilling. If you prefer something even easier you can place some thawed or already fully cooked Marinated Wing Drumettes by Banvit on the grill for quick and instant gratification. Seafood If you’ve never grilled or barbecued seafood before, you have no idea what you are missing. It is extremely quick and results are always amazing. You can basically throw anything on

Quench the thirst After standing in front of the open flames you are definitely going to need some rehydrating. Don’t forget to pack your drinks cooler with your favorite Only juice. You can choose from so many different fruit options that are organic and flavor ful.

the flames and it will taste great with minimal inter vention. We love our fish grilled whole or in fillets, and lucky for us we can find Whole Tilapia Fish by Ocean’s Pride, Whole Rohu Fish by Ocean’s Pride and Cod Portions by Storm that are skinless and boneless. Just let them thaw, season and cook! Don’t forget the shrimp! You can buy bags of peeled ones at Makani and you even have the option of having the tail on or off and with or without the heads. And why stick to only that, experiment with the Black Mussels or squid and you might realize that you have unlocked the world of amazing seafood.

Spice it up The real secret to any barbeque are the spices you choose. You can find ever ything at Makani, from individual spices to amazing mixes that will make cooking much easier. The Grill Mates line from McCormick includes the fabulous Hamburger Seasoning and Montreal Steak Seasoning, which are both ver y balanced and flavor ful. We also love the Pit Barbeque Seasoning by Lawr y’s. And if in doubt, we always reach for the Japanese Seven Spices which gives anything an extra kick.

Dessert time! Hope you left some space for dessert because you’re in for a treat! We love the Salted Caramel Waffles by Eggo that are thick and fluffy. They’re fully cooked and just need to be reheated. Putting them on the grill quickly gets them crispy and hot, and ready for some sweet indulgence. Alternatively, if you just want a no-fuss dessert, the frozen donuts from La Lorraine just need to thaw and can be enjoyed. They come in so many flavors like funfetti, crushed candy and milky zebra. Yum!

Makani is located in Shuwaikh, Jahra and Fahaheel from 07.00 AM to 10 PM every day. You can call or whatsapp 180 9090 to order or make inquiries. Follow Makani for updates on Instagram @makanikw. Visit makanifoods.com to view which branded products are available. 157

TAURUS APR 20 – MAY 20 Things could get a little out of balance between you and your partner. You really do need to tread very carefully, and not allow even the smallest twinges of possessiveness or jealousy to creep up on you. Any negative emotions you feel will be completely unjustified, and if you are rash enough to act on them or even express them in words, you’ll regret it, and have to make a huge apology.

GEMINI MAY 21 – JUN 21 This month is just a case of keeping hard at it, tidying up, routine jobs, and resolving the odd problem. While much-dreaded boredom will certainly catch up with you at times, think how virtuous you’ll feel when you’ve got every task and problem resolved, and had that satisfactory blitz on your desk, and wardrobe. Aim to keep stress and irritation at a minimum, to avoid headaches or upset stomachs.

SCORPIO OCT 23 – NOV 22

CANCER JUN 22 – JUL 22

Consider every possibility, every possible development. After your 2021 birthday, you’ll be entering an extremely positive and rewarding phase, during which you are sure to move forward and make progress. Provided you’ve used your time well and make your plans with care, you’ll eventually have cause to feel very satisfied – especially where your bank balance is concerned.

Your powers of attraction are like a vigorous magnet, and especially strong this month – so if you’re looking for a new partner, or wish to rekindle an old, nostalgic love, you really will get exactly the result you desire. Your imagination is working in a very creative and colorful manner, so whether you express yourself as a painter, poet, actor, or inspired cook to know that you will move forward and your achievements will be up there with the best.

SAGITTARIUS NOV 23 - DEC 21

LEO JUL 23 – AUG 22

Your social life continues to dominate your life, and you’ll have little or no time in which to rest up. This will certainly be fun, but you’re bound occasionally to feel a bit weary. In addition, during the first week of the month you’ll have a tricky problem to solve which will tax your brain. So take your time in living through all this: consider all possibilities, and don’t rush into decisions.

The time is right for entertaining at home and getting out your very best tableware. Your efforts make every party you give great fun, with your guests relaxing and thoroughly enjoying themselves. There’s also an accent on families. Perhaps some welcome newcomer is about to arrive, or perhaps you are planning a wedding? Whatever is about to happen will bring much happiness.

CAPRICORN DEC 22 – JAN 19

VIRGO AUG 23 – SEP 22

You’re probably feeling pretty pleased with yourself at the moment, and you can rest assured that the recent helpful influences on which you’ve been calling are still very much working in your favor. The planets’ advice is to continue to push ahead, putting any new ideas to colleagues and likeminded associates.

A decision you have to make will throw you into a very thoughtful mood. Don’t be distracted – as the issue is likely to be quite an important one. Having thought things through thoroughly – and from the 22nd there’s a very good chance that you’ll get increased support from your partner or family – you really will know what to do and how and when to do it.

AQUARIUS JAN 20 – FEB 18

LIBRA SEP 23 – OCT 22

This should be a remarkable month where your career and personal ambitions are concerned. The more you concentrate on these areas the better. Don’t discard any idea – even if at first it seems completely crazy. Aquarians who are studying (either at University or for pleasure) will make progress and certainly impress their tutors. Aim to write that dissertation, report, or essay in the middle of the month.

You hardly need us to tell you that your life will be extremely colorful and very rewarding. There’s no need to force any issues, especially if you’re attracted to a new partner – because of those lively planets you’ll have bouquets of roses by the score on your doorstep during the second week of November, and shortly afterward there will be fireworks of all sizes and colors.

PISCES FEB 19 – MAR 19 The time is right for you to think about making some new investments. Ideas about this will come flooding, and you’ll intuitively feel where it’s right to put your cash. You’re unlikely to go wrong, but a winning streak could all too easily get the better of you during the first third of the month and you might get a bit carried away.

ARIES MAR 20 – APR 19 As far as you and your lover are concerned, at the moment life is just a bowl of cherries, as the old song goes, and it will be easy for you to keep it that way. Your romantic appetite will be sharp and compelling, and lucky he or she with whom you enjoy spending it. That is, until after mid-month when if you have a ‘skeleton in the cupboard’ it could come dancing out to spoil things.
