About the Cover: Photographer Abdullah Alsaleh (@Iambooda_) took us on a wonderful trip around the shores of Kuwait, showcasing the beautiful spots for our cover shoot with jet ski world champion Mohammed Burbayea. For this water immersed cover shot, both Mohammed and Abdullah had to put on their wetsuits, and go into the subtle yet freezing water to get the full dramatic effect we all hoped for. We witnessed Mohammed’s passion and natural energy once he was there, and Abdullah’s ultimate creativity in capturing an image unlike any other. Don’t miss out on reading the entire feature in this special issue!

March 2020 | Issue #246 www.bazaar.town

If you’re reading this, that means you’ve made it out of the water-balloon and water-gun fights in one piece, either by travelling and avoiding the whole mess, or by hiding out at home, or at the very least by avoiding Gulf Road for the last few days! To be honest, even after all of these years of living in Kuwait, it still surprises me that so many people think it’s that much fun to bring traffic to a standstill, and bombard each other with water filled balloons. I mean, I’ve been to parades and National Day celebrations in many places all over the world, but I’ve yet to see anything like this take place year after year after year.

The bazaar team...

Rant over! Time to get back into the swing of things. You may have noticed our intense cover. It’s Mohammed Burbayea, jet ski racer with 28 titles under his belt, including fifteen World Championships, and two world records! You can read all about his journey this month. We get up close and personal with Sultan Al-Samhan and the Architectural Designer gives us a riveting lesson on shifting perspectives when it comes to the traditional but resilient art of Sadu. We also strike a pose with yogi Sarah Ismail, as she teaches us all about finding time for those fleeting but important Zen moments. Speaking of Zen moments, IKEA Kuwait’s newest location at the 360 MALL extension is as inspirational as it is functional, and we spoke with CEO Marino Maganto to get you all the exciting details about IKEA 360.

With the new season comes the time for a wardrobe update! Keep you event looks in check with our special Bazaar Studios photoshoots with Topshop and Miss Selfridge. We also can’t get enough of Bloomingdale’s Kuwait latest spring summer campaign. Headed to JACC’s amazing Kuwait Calling show? Then our fashion features will have you covered when it comes to picking the perfect dress. Better yet, you can read all about Kuwait Calling and how it’s the mustattend show of the season in this issue. An issue is never complete without our favorite restaurants. If you have ever wondered how The Cheesecake Factory can offer more than 200 items on the menu and still make everything from scratch, we have the answers. Prepare to be amazed. Texas Roadhouse, also makes all of their sides and bread fresh every day. And that scrumptious butter mix? We now know the secret ingredients. For a more upscale and elegant affair, head to Sintoho at the Four Seasons Hotel Kuwait and try our recommendations for the best dishes and drinks pairings. Hint: This is a great location for a Mother’s Day outing! Speaking of moms, if you still haven’t figured out what you are getting her this year. We’ve got you covered. Find the perfect gift from Rocket World and X-cite. We’ve skipped the traditional gift route so you can give her something she will love and use. There’s nothing like the gift of wellness, so the Gerolsteiner challenge might be a great activity for the two of you to do together. Happy reading! Ahmed El-Adly

CAMPING - THE ESSENTIALS WITH MOHAMMED JAFFAR

Leave nothing behind by checking this set of items to pack for your next camping trip By bazaar staff

Camping. It’s great, isn’t it? The outdoors, fresh air, and campfires. The scent of the mandatory charcoal, spare batteries and sleeping bags. And the best part? The amazing stories and experience shared with old friends, and sometimes even making new friends. For novice campers, however, there could be an entire list of must-have items that are too easy to forget. But we know this: If you’re prepared and organized, you’re definitely going to have a good time! There are so many things you can take with you before you head out. We’ve caught up with athlete and camping lover Mohammed Jaffar and listed some essentials you should pack before you leave, or pick up on your way over to base camp. Jaffar also suggests that you inform someone who isn’t traveling with you where you’ll be and for how long. Safety first. The sleep essentials This counts everything you’ll need to sleep comfortably, from sleeping bags, to ultimate warmth and extra blankets because it will be freezing cold. Make sure what you’re packing is functioning well, otherwise you’ll need a plan B and won’t have any good rest. • The tent. First on the list forever. • Sleeping bag or mattress or pillows. Put it inside the tent, but only after the tent is set up. • Flashlight. This will help you see better when you use your eyes in the dark. • Pillows. But only if you like pillows. The food and food preparation essentials Don’t worry, you don’t have to forage for your next meal when camping. And while foraging for food is also a super fun activity, you can rest assured that you can make your campfire dining experience a supremely delicious one. But know that you will need snacks to keep your energy up, and you should stay hydrated. • Water. And lots of it. Take at least a liter per person per day. Then add several liters on top of that to the total just to be safe. • Cans of food. A camp favorite for a reason. No need for refrigeration means it is ready to eat when you need it. From pasta to beans, from tuna to some veggies, even baby hot dogs - most camp-friendly things can be found in a can! • Can opener. Or just get canned goods with a peeltop. •Food that can be consumed on the day. Bring what you plan to grill in the cooler and on ice, and cook it 22

within 12 hours. What’s a campfire without a grill up? We leave it up to you to decide condiments and spices. • Grill and Firestarter. Bring a campfire grill, a small hibachi grill or just be prepared to make your own fire at camp (in the designated area safely) but be sure to pack some firestarters. Alternatively, bring newspapers. • Cooking pots or pans. Part of the charm of camping in Kuwait is enjoying a hot meal as the temperatures drop. • Charcoal or wood. Bring more than you think you’ll need. • Utensils, plates and airtight containers. Yes, you need this. •A cooler. Keep everything safe and sound in this useful lidded box for things you will consume later. The extracurricular and other essentials. Everything else goes here. You’ll want some fun activities to do, maybe an awesome camera to capture your new adventures, and of course great campfire stories! • Playing cards. Traditional playing cards are the standard. You can shake things up by taking a cardbased game that’s been invented in the last twenty years. Plenty of new ones to choose from. • Books. Go old school. Bring a book and see what happens.

• Board games. A little research will go a long way. Thousands of board games exist, and many more are invented each year. We may have grown up with Monopoly and Candyland, but other award-winners abound for you to fall in love with. • A power bank. When you don’t have access to an outlet, bring your own. These can vary in power, bring one that’s big enough to cycle through several charges before it gives out. For example, 20,000mAh will get you between seven to eight phone charges before it’s spent. And don’t forget to bring the correct cables in order to actually charge what you need to charge. And the phone of course. •First aid kit. You never know when you’ll need one, so always keep one with you. • Insect repellent. Depending on the time of year, and where you are, this is a must-have or a mustmiss. • Trash bags. Leave it like you found it, and everyone will thank you for it. Once you check the above off your list, adjust for the specifics of your camping extravaganza - like a change of clothes or a hat. The essentials are done, you’re packed, you’re ready to have fun. The rest, well, that’s all up to you. Happy camping!

MIKE SALEMI VISITS KUWAIT

TFB powered by Faisal Buresli is bringing the experts to Kuwait By bazaar staff

Last year we interviewed Faisal Buresli, founder of TFB and realized that he cared just as much about educating people about fitness and the latest techniques and scientific discoveries as he was about coaching. Last month he invited Mike Salemi, renowned international presenter in the field of health and fitness and human performance specialist to Kuwait. Mike’s background is quite diverse and he has been active in the industry for over 15 years. He is an expert in strength and conditioning and has competed at an elite level in Powerlifting and Kettlebell Sport. His own path has led him to having to deal with sport-related injuries, and he realized the value of integrating the body, mind, and spirit as a means to foster high performance for the long term. Helping athletes, fitness professionals, and coaches discover their own 24

potential from the inside-out is what motivates him the most. Mike has also served as a Division 1 strength and conditioning coach for Santa Clara University, and trained elite athletes across a wide range of sports. Just like Faisal, Mike believes that providing educational workshops, certifications, and creating programs on unconventional training that will build more balanced athletes is one of the most effective ways of improving their clients’ performance, while also making sure they stay safe. By partnering up, Mike was able to bring his course ‘Beyond Art and Athletic Performance’ to Kuwait through the TFB platform. The course teaches people to use multiple tools like suples balls, suples bands, Bulgarian bags and some modalities called ELDOA stretches. A total of 12 people took part in the training course, many of which were coaches themselves. This is part of Faisal’s overall vision, because he doesn’t want the knowledge to end with him, he truly wants to put Kuwait on the fitness map.

In order to do so, he believes that education is one of the best tools in his arsenal.‫“‏‬The goal is to elevate the standards and educate everyone who’s interested to be better,” Faisal says. By bringing over elites in the fitness world and offering people an opportunity to receive coaching from the best in their respective fields is one of Faisal’s end goals too. And while he understands that people now have access to online courses, in-person training in his opinion is still superior. “‫‏‬It’s like tasting food from the menu or watching a football match and playing in real life, for sure it’s not the same and that’s why lots of mistakes and injuries happen,” says Faisal, and we can’t disagree with his logic. Faisal has promised us that there is more to come and that he is already planning for more future events, collaborations and partnerships with global experts. We can’t wait to see what he is going to be doing next! To stay up to date with TFB and to make sure you can get in on the action follow @tfbfitness on Instagram.

THE MATERIAL RHYTHMS OF SULTAN AL-SAMHAN

A study in the resilience of sadu By bazaar staff

Last month’s exhibition which took place at Sadu House titled “Material Rhythm” featured various local artists. One of them was Sultan Al-Samhan, who had displayed his artworks throughout Sadu House uniquely, even on the floor! He is a passionate 27-yearold artist and Architectural Designer at Gulf Consult that took the interpretations of Sadu to a new level, while also documenting the process behind it all in a beautiful set of videos, showcasing the intricate details of his work more closely. But now, he is taking us even deeper into what he gained from this whole experience.

26

It all started with five workshops at Sadu House prior to the exhibition, and in each workshop the topic varied, from screen printing, block printing, to music and more. But the main prompt was clear, and it was rhythm. As Sultan explains “It’s up to [us] how to interpret it, but it has to also relate to Sadu. And Sadu is a form of self-expression, so they said ‘take it and do what you want with it.’” That’s exactly what Sultan did, but he also went down the route of experimentation, something he already enjoyed venturing into and implemented it as he discovered the depths of Sadu. Before oil was discovered in Kuwait, people had a certain understanding of labor, quality and the craft of handmade materials such as Sadu. Sultan says that this is what intrigued him the most, and how nowadays, the practice feels very much diluted due to the fast-paced world we currently live in compared to the olden days. Not only that, but he also appreciated the connection of nature in-between everything else. “I have a huge respect for nature and the wisdom of [it], and I try to apply that to my experiments whether it’s in the architecture [or] art. It’s how the material changes when you change your perspective,” he says. There were many layers to go through during the workshops, notions that Sultan was already curious about such as an adaptation to the local environment and a sensitivity to the nature of the materials. Sultan emphasizes how in Kuwait, there was a connection with the land when there used to be nothing but nature, and the resilience behind it is what he respected and applied onto his pieces. This project mainly highlighted 'the process', which is achieved through blurring the lines between process and end result. Such as the carpet canvas that Sultan displayed on the floor at the exhibition. Sultan decided to focus on highlighting the importance of the handmade craft, as well as the use of material and how it is interpreted as he was working on his pieces. He says “I looked at the piece of Sadu, and started zooming in and out from macro to micro, and [at] each level you start noticing something different. Shaikha Altaf said something beautiful from the first workshop, which is when someone does something over and over, there’s a rhythm to their body when the subconscious is pretty much doing the work. It became that continual experiment, trying to use a different material each time, and the rhythm comes from the artist’s body and the handmade nature of it means that you get those off beats that add interest.” Sultan also took screen printing to a whole other level, and the end product of different layers within it. It was inspired by his love of minimalism, and shapes such as the triangles, the tents, and the camels that were always seen on Sadu carpets. “There [are a] lot of technical skills that I picked up. For example, screen printing, I had no clue that it’s a very intensive process, and I could’ve used the same screen print and covered the whole courtyard. But again, going back to handmade, I had to [include] the motion behind the weaving process and the individual fiber, drew each module individually, then prepared the printing screen with emulsion, put it in the oven, then you get the film made and put it in a dark room. Take out the screen, mark out where the edges are, which is called ‘Registering,’ and then you apply the paint, then you can use it as many times as you want. But I thought no, just once. I thought the printing would take two to three hours, but it took about 12 to 13 hours just to print,” he says, that is how his craft was created, with utter dedication. The feedback Sultan received after the exhibition was positive, and he enjoyed observing the different reactions of people coming in as they embraced and took hold of his pieces. The experience made him gain tons of new techniques that he is hoping to expand on in the future, but he shall keep it for himself at the time being to not ruin the upcoming surprises of his next projects!

The winner has to be how they don’t care what everyone else is doing, they’ll do what they were going to do. Which living person do you most admire? Too tough to pick one... Da Vinci, Bucky Fuller, Einstein, Le Corbusier, Cy Twombly, Mies, Sol Lewitt and Monet are the first to come to mind. None of these are alive though. For that I’d go for Robert Irwin and Tadao Ando. What is your greatest extravagance? Expensive (for good reason) paint and stationery. Yeah, most definitely stationery. What is your most treasured possession? The collection of sketchbooks or the hard drives. What is your greatest fear? I see a lot of relatively young people with talent that put in the work and have good intentions. I worry luck or outside circumstance won’t be on their side, hope it will be. What is your most marked characteristic? Asked and heard, you’d never catch me without a pen or pencil. Which talent would you most like to have? I like to think talent is minor when compared to a skill being worked at, with that in mind I’d say coding for sure. What is one trait you have that you are most grateful for? Curiosity or patience. What is the human trait you most dislike about others? People who don’t push themselves, or accept things at surface value instead of questioning or exploring.. What are your favorite words to live by? “Seek simplicity but distrust it.” - Whitehead Where would you most like to live? A quiet location surrounded by nature and the ocean. I have a soft spot for France as well, somewhere on the south coast. If you could have any job, what would it be? Architect or creative director. Orchestrate memorable experiences that are sensitive to material, light and space. What would you consider your greatest achievement? Can’t say much about it just yet, but a personal design being chosen for a future building that’s going to be in the city. What do you hope for the future? Tolerance for our differences, freedom of expression and a reconnection with nature.

THROWING SHADE

Why throw shade when you can shed light? #bossbabe By Dr. Susannah-Joy Schuilenberg

What used to be called "criticism" is now referred to as “throwing shade.” I quite like the term because I think visually, that’s one phrase that creates a great picture. I just envision someone sauntering on a bright sunny day and a net of shade coming into the frame from one side, obviously intended to capture the individual walking along minding his own business. Criticism is the expression of disapproval of someone or something based on perceived faults or mistakes. Its synonyms are words like ‘condemnation,’ ‘disapproval,’ ‘censure,’ and ‘denunciation.’ Most of the time, criticism comes from a place of bitterness, judgment, or legalism – otherwise known as ‘shade pits.’ These are internal states that belong entirely to the individual and have nothing to do with anyone else…and the expression of those states throws shade on others. Criticism has many pitfalls. What we do to others, we do to ourselves, and vice versa. Criticism encourages judgment, shame, inflexibility, externalization or projecting, persistent negativity, perfectionism, lack of distinction between opinion and objective reality, and intolerance of discomfort or imperfections. We know from research that people are far more motivated by praise and encouragement than they are by criticism. There is nothing more discouraging than having someone you love continually telling you that you should be handling things or doing things differently (and take note: unsolicited “advice” is throwing shade). On the other hand, encouragement from those we care for is motivating and increases the likelihood that we will persist at hard tasks, or that we will continue to invest in a relationship that currently feels difficult, trusting in a positive outcome. In a survey of employees at seven hundred companies, the majority said that a caring boss was more important to them than how much they earned. That’s astounding. The majority of us will stay with a boss who is encouraging and supportive over jumping ship for more money. Encouragement leads to openness, flexibility, curiosity, surprise, collaboration, connection, invention, imagination, creativity, diversity, discovery, exploration, acceptance, imperfections, mistakes, successes, comedy, happy accidents, serendipity, appreciation. With encouragement, we believe we can do almost anything. Think about what it means to throw shade… we’re really saying that the person we’re critical of is somehow ‘less than’ because s/he didn’t do something the way we would have done it. Or we’re saying what that individual/group did had no value 30

because we don’t agree with the action taken or the cause. Any values-based judgment is utterly subjective and simply exposes the scaffolding of the shade thrower’s internal landscape. Criticizing other says waaaaaaay more about the one throwing shade than the one being shaded. One of the memes I found said, “Guess who be throwing shade but hiding their hands?” The picture was a hand, pointing at the reader. If you be one who throws shade, here’s the point. One: Never learn anything about the fashionable, easily mastered art of throwing shade. Two: Stay out of the company of all shade throwers. Three: Keep your own shade where it belongs – with you. That darkness is nobody’s business but yours. For those who would rather throw sunshine, here are some quick tips to help you develop the habit of encouraging both yourself and others. One: Notice what’s going right, what the intention was, or the effort made, no matter what the outcome. Two: Express appreciation to yourself

and for others. Three: Use ‘I’ statements to notice and name the good in others. In other words, own your sunshine. Four: Use words and body language to offer encouragement. Give support verbally and smile or nod as a way of indicating you’re supportive. Five: Cultivate the qualities that encourage encouragement; interest in others, attentive listening, patience, a friendly voice, a friendly look, speaking for one’s self, owning personal perspectives and making room for the perspectives of others. Six: Find what feels like authentic ‘sunshine’ to you and practice, practice, practice by throwing it every opportunity you have. THE JOURNEY TO INNER PEACE Meet yogi Sarah Ismail By bazaar staff

32

Yoga studios specialized in various types and classes have become a lot more common in Kuwait throughout the past years. To learn more, we met with one exceptionally inspiring yogi, Sarah Ismail. Sarah has been practicing yoga for more than 15 years, she traveled and taught yoga in different countries and continents, from Canada, Thailand, to finally settling in Kuwait. The practice of yoga has changed her life entirely, it naturally became her lifestyle and right now, Sarah’s mission is to make it accessible for as many people as possible. After Sarah received her undergraduate degree in Social Studies in Medicine with a minor in Biology at McGill University in Canada, she moved on to Homeopathic Medicine, where she regularly kept working out and continued to practice yoga. Her education was as important to her as keeping up her practice, and during one summer, she finally decided to take the next step, and began her training as well as starting her career in teaching yoga. The journey ignited when Sarah was going to her gym in Canada, which was once a week. There, she met a teacher who inspired her to pursue the career of a yogi, she says “In her class, after a week I would notice a difference like doing a headstand in three weeks, and I was active in general, so some poses in yoga are easier when you’re active, and you’re centering yourself and everything. But I found this teacher, and she inspired me. I wanted to do training in the studio [where] she did her training.” The energy and skills of Sarah’s teacher left her feeling more relaxed and aware of herself, something she admired greatly and pursued even further. Sarah loves how the yoga community in Kuwait has been growing and believes that she’s not the only one who feels that, “I know that the way it helped, the way that I feel about yoga I’m sure that’s how people feel about it. Even some of my yogis have gone to become teachers, so that teacher inspired me, and I think I’ve inspired others as well,” she says. The lifestyle that she’s been leading mainly revolves around that inner peace which many would receive after working out and practicing yoga. Her classes are spread over five yoga studios around town, and Sarah adores meeting new people who share the same interest and passion as she does. As well as sharing and spreading the positive vibes with everyone in her classes. Sarah says that “No one should be able to tell if I was having a bad day, for me it comes down to that. What you give out energetically, if I’m positive, even when life throws a curveball, and life can be stressful, learn how to bounce back. Yoga with meditation gives you [these] tools.”

She emphasizes on how simple breathing techniques are amongst one tool of many that would help in calming both your body and mind, becoming ultimately stress-free. The energy which she gives out inspires her students to come back for more. On her Instagram page, Sarah posts daily challenges, both for herself to always keep learning and growing, and to inspire her followers, and maybe spark some yoga passion within them! “Some of them [yoga poses] are accessible to people, some I’d say don’t try this at home!” she says. For the future, Sarah’s goal is to open her own yoga studio, where she would be able to train different yoga classes, as well as practice her own Natural Medicine. As she excitedly says, ”It is my passion, and I’m lucky enough to have found something I love doing.”

PRESERVING HISTORY, LITERALLY

AUK Library launches Oral History and Documentation Project in collaboration with KIPCO By bazaar staff

The American University of Kuwait (AUK) is making waves with its new implemented idea. Their new collaboration is one to preserve important events from people who have stories to tell about the history of Kuwait. In an effort to achieve this, they have partnered up with KIPCO to record life history audios from people who are familiar with our beautiful country and its history. The Library at the AUK has recently launched a project called the Oral History and Documentation Project (OHDP) with KIPCO – the Kuwait Projects Company (Holding) as its collaborator. The project is an initiative by AUK’s Center for Gulf Studies and is led by its former Director, Dr. Farah Al Nakib. Recently, its first set of life history interviews with pioneers in Kuwait has been made public, marking the introductory launch of the project. The OHDP was established to actively conduct and record oral histories on a wide range of topics and themes, in an effort to document the generational experiences of Kuwaitis and nonKuwaitis. The launching of the OHDP website marks

36

the culmination of a four-year collaboration between AUK and KIPCO, which has supported the project since its early stages of planning. The overarching aim of the project is to develop a substantial archive of recorded interviews that will serve as valuable resource to researchers, students and the general public. The OHDP interviews can be accessed through the OHDP website: oralhistory. auk.edu.kw. Ms. Asma Al Kanan, a University Librarian at AUK said: “It is not uncommon for libraries to nurture such projects. Libraries have always been places where content is created, shared and preserved for generations to come. We are very proud to launch the Oral History Project in Kuwait and make it available to the public through the latest technology of audio recording and archiving. All of this would not have been possible without the strong support of KIPCO and the university administration, as well as the dedication of the project team led by our project manager, Ms. Reem Al Ali.” Ms. Eman Al Awadhi, Group Communications Director at KIPCO also commented: “KIPCO is delighted to be supporting this important AUK initiative, the Oral History and Documentation Project. As we all work together to realize the vision

of the future of Kuwait, we must look to lessons learnt from the past. Here rests the importance of preserving the voices, memories and experiences of the many men and women who have made significant contributions to shape this nation.” The OHDP is currently focused on recording the life histories of those born before the 1960s. The recorded interviews explore the memories of individuals who experienced the drastic shift in Kuwait’s society with the advent of oil, as well as their experiences of major historical events such as the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait in 1990. History is being created and recorded as we speak, and AUK is definitely one of the first pioneers to take that step. In a generation where technology is so accessible and versatile, building archives that will be looked back upon is crucial. History class just got a lot more interesting!

BREAKING BARRIERS MOHAMMED BURBAYEA’S UNSTOPPABLE RECORDS By bazaar staff

38

When the element of water is ingrained within you, no temperature is restrictive. As the photographer got his wet suit on to go into the water for that perfect shot that we all needed, so did Burbayea who casually said “The water is really nice!” when in fact it was freezing. It’s clear that his energy flows naturally and beautifully when he’s immersed in his element. Burbayea is no stranger to any podium he steps on when it comes to jet ski championships. His name is wellknown both locally and internationally, his winning streak started from the age of 18. Now that he is 31-years-old, the journey just keeps on progressing even more than ever. Breaking his own personal record is an achievement in itself, but entering the Guinness World records two times in a row without a yearly gap in-between made him the first person in the world who did just that! This passion was in fact developed from a young age. Mohammed’s brother, Abdullah, was a jet ski racer. As it usually is the case in Kuwait, summer weekends are well spent at the chalet, which is where Mohammed used to get on the jet ski and ride the waves as a hobby. He acknowledged the

talent he had, and Abdullah encouraged him to take this sporty hobby to the next level by beginning to coach him on a few racing skills. After that, Mohammed entered his first local race in Kuwait back in 2006 for beginners, and the engine was ignited. He scored his first win at 18, which came after Burbayea went to the UAE to compete. There wasn’t a beginner’s class there, so he mixed with professional jet skiers aged between 25-30 years old. While he was just 18 at the time, and still a novice racer eager to take on the challenge, he raced against people of great experience and expertise in the field, “I participated and managed to get third place over them in six rounds with a total point I took third of a row. It was something great for me, it’s what made me evolve, and progress step by step” he says. It was this win that made him decide to go pro. Jet ski championships are mainly made up of two things, the level of the racer, which includes beginner, amateur, expert and pro. Plus, the level of the jet ski itself, be it modified or stock. Year after year, Mohammed reached the pro level, and once you reach that level, you can’t compete below it. Burbayea has been in the professional class for seven years, since 2014 and as he humbly says “My results are still very good, I participated in so

many championships. Kuwait, UAE, Qatar, Oman, Thailand, Belgium, Austria, America, and so many places. The jet ski alone flew more times than I did! [laughs] I took it everywhere.” Today, Burbayea holds almost 150 trophies from all over the globe, 22 within 12 years, and that’s only counting gold medals. He does have awards for second and third places but Mohammed personally does not include them in his count. Not only that, but his participation in championships around the world counts up to around 50 medals alone. After he was successfully ranked as the number one jet skier in the world within the IJSBA Union in December, 2019; a union that is specialized in Water Sports since 1981, it was the first time they introduced a championship called “World Series Triple Crown”. This championship is made up of three rounds, and within each round, the racer collects points, plus, the point of total points for the Triple Crown. The first point Burbayea took was in Belgium, the second one he took was in Arizona, the US, and the third point came in Thailand. “The total points [earned me] the title called ‘World Champion’, [and this is] the first time it has happened since 1981. They honored me [in Thailand], and the honor was so powerful because there was money involved in it, other championships don’t necessarily have a

financial value but more of a media [opportunity]. So they gave me 30,000 USD, and I got honored with a trophy that I admired a lot. Written on it [were] all the continents, the trophy was heavy too, and it has the class that I’ve won in, which is the highest class in jet skiing for a racer,” says Burbayea. Throughout his professional journey, Mohammed has faced obstacles. At one point, he lost a whole race over half a KD (500 fils). Burbayea does say that it is a watersport, and mechanical mistakes can occur often. “The bracket cable (worth half a KD) of the battery broke, so that cable was holding the battery and the whole thing fell out, the jet ski turned off, lost me the entire championship. Sometimes it’s not in our hands or the mechanic, no matter how much we prepare, unexpected things happen.” he says. That’s why it’s important to always have a balance between the jet ski, and the rider’s physical fitness. Mohammed Burbayea continued breaking barriers, especially when he received first place for the biggest prize in jet skiing, the Pro JB Class. “A memory I’ll never forget because I was so happy at the time that I was the first Arab to win in this class, and I was young; only 25-years-old.” he says. Due to this huge achievement, he was honored by the Amir, Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah himself for the Kuwait Award in Excellence and Youth Innovation organized by the Ministry of Youth Affairs in 2016. Being a Captain in the General Directory of Traffic at the Ministry of Interior as well as one of the biggest names in the jet ski community, Burbayea’s balance between these two professions is as impeccable as his performances in championships. As retirement nears, his love for this sport is still going strong, and he says that for the future he would like to form an academy to teach and train beginners in the skills of jet ski racing. He tells us more about his dream, “The academy would be a collaboration with both the government and the private sector together so that it becomes something beautiful. Especially now that we’ve reached a certain level in jet skiing in world championships, Guinness World record, highest class. I wish for this thing to happen, where an academy is there for the next generation. Because at the end of the day, we will retire, and the next generation would lift the name of the country and participate in the upcoming championships.” But, for now, Burbayea is personally looking to grab his 23rd world champion title for 2020, and all we can do is keep on the lookout for yet another breakthrough. For more information, check out Burbayea’s page @m.burbayea on Instagram. Visit redbull.com, or follow @redbullkuwait on Instagram. Images taken by Abdullah AlSaleh, @iambooda_ on Instagram.

AN INSTRUMENTAL JOURNEY IN KUWAIT

A spotlight on talented locals and their instrumental stylings By Meryl Mathew

Music is a divine blessing from the soul and the passion to produce beautiful music is a treasure that only a few pursue. It takes years of dedication and practice to learn an instrument and be good at it. With musical concerts and events being on the rise in Kuwait, instrumental musicians have taken various platforms in awe. Discover how each of these musicians have a beautiful story on how they discovered their instrument and found their identity in it. The Harp- An ancient musical instrument, the harp is played by plucking its strings with the fingers and pressing its pedals using the feet. Violeta Shabanliyska (www.musician-kw.com) met the Harp at the age of ten. Her introduction to the harp was supposed to be temporary, but turned into becoming her life’s passion over her 11 years of training and graduation from the National School and National University of Music in Bulgaria as a harpist and classical musician. “I’m a very fortunate person, I have had a very colorful lifestyle as a musician, traveling and participating in venues all around Europe. Since I moved to Kuwait in 2008 I have been even more lucky with opportunities in introducing the Harp to Kuwait.” Indeed, Kuwait is lucky to have her, as its quite rare to find a musician who believes that the harp completes her personality which is both sensitive and full of emotion. Her harp, be it the electric or acoustic version, creates a magical and special feeling to both the musician and the audience. The Cajon –A percussion instrument originally from Peru, played by slapping its faces with the hands or fingers. Mebin Mathews (@mebzz) first came across the Cajon in 2012 at a church service in Kuwait. He knew then that he had to get his hands on it and learn how to play it. “I began to research and watch online tutorials to pick up the speed and rhythm of tapping onto wooden surfaces.” This was the self-inspiration that lead Mebin to pursue his passion for music through the Cajon. Finally, when he felt ready in 2017 he sought out to buy a professional Cajon but could not find one in Kuwait, so when he took a trip to Spain he fulfilled a dream that he carried for five years, a Cajon by the Spanish brand ‘La Rosa Percussion’. Since then Mebin has been performing at various platforms with local bands such as the Musiq beats and KEF Orchestra. His performance is an interesting affair as it includes a fusion mix with Indian music that brings a special tone. Handpan- A combination of the Caribbean steelpan and Indian ghatam, originally named Hang. Being a recording artist and multi-instrumentalist musician Tarek Kabbani (@turkhimself) soon discovered that the Handpan was his way to indulge deeper into his music and create a pure form of expression with his art. Over the last three years he has played the handpan at various venues around Kuwait, Dubai, Beirut and Goa and has created quite the spark. “It was in 2006 when I first heard of the Hang drum, the father of the Handpan and I spent ten years researching about it and searching for the right moment to have one of my own” The handpan creates a unique vibration that no other instrument can, due to its hand hammered tuning which produces its gorgeous overtones and undertones. “My latest discovery of the Pantam which is a refined version of the handpan, tells me that I have only begun my journey in discovering and unlocking my identity and destiny with this instrument."

Violin- A wooden string instrument with a hollow wooden body played by drawing a bow across its strings. Sheikha Al-Wotaid (@shaikha_alwotaid) has trained with a lot of passion since the age of 12 and over the years has made it a point to practice and learn as fast as she can every time her teacher taught her a new piece. It is only because of this dedication that she practiced for ten years, let her reach a stage where she finally felt satisfied. “You don’t choose your instrument but the instrument chooses you. This is a phrase that I truly believe in as the violin was also an unexpected entry into my life at the age of four.” Thus giving her the confidence to perform at various concerts with other musicians over the years which in-turn lead her to her own concerts across Kuwait, as well as studying the effect of music on the mind. “The violin has been like the perfect person to have a reasonable conversation with, that’s how I feel when I hold my instrument as it explains what’s in my soul.” Harmonica- A wind instrument played by blowing or drawing air into its holes along the mouth piece. It was during Shadi Al Mahallawy’s (@thebluesy3rd) third year in college that he first came across the harmonica through a sitcom, where the lead actor played the blues. “The tune moved me so much, I just fell in love with it.” It took Shadi about three years to self-learn the instrument and there was even a phase where he gave up because he was stuck in a rut, but when he came back to Kuwait, he decided to peruse it further. The day he recorded his first song in 2016 was finally the beginning of his journey. Shadi has since then played at various venues in Kuwait and entertained with genres like Jazz, Blues, and Country. His favorite being the Blues. "You can make it weep. You can make it wail. That's the power of the Blues. I always keep a harmonica on me, you never know when the jam will hit.” This is what makes his musical expression unique as he believes in the power of a conversation through music. Saxophone- A woodwind instrument usually made of brass and played with a single –reed mouth piece. “I was inspired by Michael Jackson but my voice was not apt, so I decided to learn the saxophone which was an instrument that could sing the range and frequency of the human vocals.” Hassan Ali (@toosaxy) who is also a music producer has been part of the Arabic Pop band Flamingo and Latin Band Stylis. His most recent venture is the Sheyaab, a band that infuses comedy in music. It is this creativity in music that makes him loved all over Kuwait, around GCC and some cities in the US and UK where he has performed. “Sometimes you play your style at a venue, like my favorite has been Latin and Pop but I make it a point to also see what the audience likes” His motto to follow the audience taste, makes his music loved. Flute – A family under the woodwind group that produces its sound from the flow of air across an opening. Smithosh first saw the flute in his fifth grade at a village fair where he heard it being played by a flute seller. He was fascinated and bought one. After a few years he did manage to play a few tunes but it was not enough for his craving. That was when one of his family friends introduced him to his first flute master, Mr. Murali. His professional training in Karnatic music began then and he trained until his 12th grade, after which he trained under Mr. Chalakudy Reghunathan. When he came to Kuwait with work, the flute became a companion during his bachelor days and also gave him his first concert with a violinist. “I have not thought of another instrument because, when I play, it gives me and my audience a sense of happiness that is difficult to describe.” Meryl Mathew is a Logistician by profession, a writer by passion and an upcycling hobbyist. She involves herself in a lot of multi-cultural events across Kuwait. You can find her on Muckrack (meryl-mathew) and on Instagram @Meryl_elizebeth_mathew or @create.kuwait. 44

Customers receive a fair chance for every KD 10 in the account. As for the quarterly draw, customers need to only have a minimum balance of KD 500 in their account

two months prior to the draw date wherein with each KD 10 in the account, customers have the chance to enter the draws. Simultaneously, if the account balance is KD 500 and above, the account holder will be qualified for both the quarterly and daily draws. Ideally, we encourage everyone to open a Yawmi account and/or increase their deposit to maximize their chances of becoming a winner. How can people sign up for this account? Signing up is quite an easy process - customers can either visit any of our 29 branches located across all governorates, or simply apply online. Who would benefit the most from this type of account? Opening a draw account is a smart way to save, as the return on savings is not a traditional return such as an interest while anticipating a great win. The draw accounts are designed for people who would to like to try their luck in winning a return that is higher than the normal interest. It is worth mentioning that the higher the level of the deposit or savings, the higher the likelihood to win.

What would you do if you won the draw? As per the regulations imposed by the Ministry of Commerce and the Central Bank of Kuwait, employees of the bank cannot apply for the same draw accounts offered to customers. However, we are entitled to an internal staff draw account which bears similar features and benefits. I have not been fortunate enough to win as of yet, but if I do, I would definitely spend the money on my greatest extravagance: travelling! What would be your advice for people to save more money? Don’t wait any longer, I urge you to open a Yawmi account and start your journey to saving more and if lucky, winning more to add to the savings!

BLAST OUR TUNES

Music may be the food of love, but it is also the food of our souls By bazaar staff

At the bazaar office, we have a variety and certainly a diverse taste in music. From classics, disco jamming, to Disney favorites and some good old throwbacks. We have days, when one of us plays one of their playlists, and we’re either introduced to a new song, album, or we simply sing along to whatever’s playing. It’s interesting how we all share our music in the office, it’s seamless and gives us a look into what each song means to us, with some nostalgic feelings. So, without further ado, here are some of our favorite albums/songs! Name: Yasmin Gamal (Mixed Media Content) Favorite song/album: “Let a boy cry” by Gala. I was 16 when this song came out and I thought it was empowering and powerful. It was and still is my personal anthem. It is not even in my favorite genre/ style of music but the strong lyrics with the beat just worked for me. I still want to believe I can be a pirate and can conquer the world #sorrynotsorry for being cheesy. Name: Farah Barakat (Mixed Media Content) Favorite song/album: First off, let me start by saying that this question is amazing however, it is very tough for me to pick one album, or a song because I have such a love and appreciation for music in general. One of my favorite quotes by a Danish author is actually “Where words fail, music speaks”, and that describes how I feel about music. Right now, I would say an EP I’ve been playing on repeat is Sabrina Claudio’s Confidently Lost. Sabrina is an amazing artist who sings from the depths of her soul, letting music speak when words fail. To me, her music goes beyond words, rhymes and poetry, you feel every beat and every high note with her. "Confidently Lost" is a song about a girl who doesn't need saving. She knows her true authentic self, and she is comfortable with embracing her journey (ups and downs included). My favorite verse in her track is when she says “Made up of hope and mediation” because I can relate to that so much. After all, being vulnerable is something shied away from in society, and in this song, she is confident in her journey and that it will lead her exactly where she needs to be. I could list all the other songs from Sabrina that I adore, but honestly it would probably fill up this page and I would not be able to stop singing right now. “Orion's Belt”, “Messages From Her”, “Unravel Me” and “Stand Still” are just some of my faves as well.

Name: Umika Pidaparthy (Online Producer) Favorite song/album: "Narrow Stairs" by Death Cab for Cutie. If I've listened to an entire album once, I rarely, RARELY, listen to it again in full. There will always be a couple of songs I will add to my skip list (thank you Spotify), even if they're by my favorites -- whether it is the Beatles or Billie Eilish. That being said, I would say Death Cab for Cutie's "Narrow Stairs" is one album that is so well produced, dynamic and soothing, and has tracks that flow so well together that I rarely reach for the "Next" button when it is on. I do have favorite tracks like "I Will Possess Your Heart" (the full version. The radio edit is not even comparable), and "Grapevine Fires". But play "Narrow Stairs" or really any Death Cab for Cutie album (pre-2011) and I just want to snuggle up by a window with a cup of tea or go for a long sunset drive. (NB: "I Will Possess Your Heart" opens with: How I wish you could see the potential, the potential of you and me. It's like a book elegantly bound, but in a language that you can't read just yet.) Name: Yasmine El Charif (Content Manager) Favorite song/album: This question is a toughie, because there’s basically a huge amount of great music that’s out in the universe for us to enjoy. Those who know me well enough would expect me to revert to a disco classic or something by Led Zeppelin (I mean, “Kashmir” is life, but that’s another discussion for another day), but I find myself going back to “Cold Little Heart” by Michael Kiwanuka. I first heard this on Big Little Lies, I was instantly hooked! It’s the perfect combination of incredible lyrics, great melody and the extended

version (The radio edit doesn’t do this tune justice) features an awesome full on orchestra which takes this song to another level. I was also immediately drawn to Kiwanuka’s voice. He sings this with so much passion, I just had to listen to more, and the entire Love & Hate album is such a great play on Spotify and the song itself "Love & Hate" is so uplifting and features a gorgeous guitar solo. Enjoy! Name: Hallah Danbouh (Mixed Media Content) Favorite song/album: channel ORANGE by Frank Ocean. I may be exaggerating when I say I live for this album, but I really do. There is no way for a playlist to exist in my life without at least one song from channel ORANGE, because each and every one of them is that flawless and expressive. It’s been almost a decade since Frank Ocean debuted the album, he introduced a new form of sound into the music industry, let alone his soothing and incredible voice, and his deep yet very personal lyrics which creates an instant connection between the listener and the artist, making him one of the most creative artists of this century. From the hit and unforgettable song “Thinkin Bout you”, the ultimate summer feels of “So why see the world, when you got the beach” in “Sweet Life”, the impeccable and amazing tenminute journey of “Pyramids”, and the song titled “Forrest Gump” which combines the name of an iconic film as Frank connects the dots from the film’s characters to his personal life. Truly an epic album from start to end.

I AM INCAPABLE OF PHYSICAL AFFECTION

And that’s not exactly a bad thing By George Tarabay

Before I progress into this piece that will surely prompt you at the end to say ‘Dude, what’s wrong with this guy?’ allow me to clarify that the only person who the title of this article does not apply to is my wife. This is about everyone else in my life… and I mean everyone. We are creatures of habit. Since birth, we’ve associated our ‘booboos’ getting fixed with our mothers or fathers affectionately holding us, kissing us and hugging us until we felt safe again (Side note: I bet ya didn’t think you were going to hear the word booboo in your head today). And that is genuinely the warmest feeling a child, who can only process the world in basic binary form, feel. It is our first bubble. We innately and through various ‘booboo’ experiences learn the basic formula that parents = safety. From there, we consider that bubble for safety and risk. We know that, if we are around our parents, we will be safe. If we want to go rogue, we make sure our parents cannot see us because we want to be alone while we venture into the forbidden or uncharted land. It is quintessential for a child to know that he can fall back on their parents whenever, wherever, because children know that their parents will always 50

love them no matter what. So, we constantly test the boundaries of what we can or cannot do. Be it a simple venture to the hill they told you to never go alone (done that), or flunking at university (done that) or even, to heed what people think of you (never done that). As I grew older, and through various experiences, I realized that growth tends to happen outside the safety bubble (I wrote at least 15 articles about that, go have a blast). But with it came a mental shift that happened around 16, when I realized emotions kept me weak, kept me protected and gave me an excuse to stay put. I slowly and surely started resenting any display of emotional dependency. I felt emotions kept us bound to words and further reinforces the walls of the bubble even when that bubble is in perpetual growth. When I did process my feelings, I experienced mental growth so quickly, that for many years it crippled my ability to just get on with life and ‘do’. I believe that, because I tend to rationalize a lot of the things I go through, I try to apply logic to things that shouldn’t be logical. Why did you dislike that person you met at dinner on the spot? Many would answer: I don’t know … he was just off. I realized that there is a deeper layer we are susceptible to which is body language. Our mind picks it up, processes it and decides that the person is not vibing well and before your mind can sprint

into action, your emotional center rips the report and sends it an emotional code, much like your boss taking the credit for the hard work you did. As wrong as it sounds, I eliminated that backclimbing boss from the equation. With it, I slowly resented any form of physical affection: hugs, kisses, handshakes etc. I feel it is too invasive and too impeding, even when it came from my family. This isn’t to try and convince you to adopt this method or mentality, but maybe, just maybe, it can help you better understand the rationale behind many people not liking to be hugged or approached. Simply because, I do believe that this is what is going on in their heads at a level they are not yet aware of. Of course, I am not discounting germophobes. They never want to be touched. Every now and then, I see an old friend I didn’t see for a while, I hug them. I mean it at the moment. I am after all, a creature of habit even if my habits have changed, but old habits are harder to kill. The hug lasts an average of four seconds, but it is followed by me questioning why I did it for a whole week.

CELEBRATE EARTH AT THE SCIENTIFIC CENTER

A walk-through this month’s Earth-friendly events By bazaar staff

From March 19th and up until April 22nd, the Scientific Center, Kuwait (TSCK) will be taking us through a transformative month with various events related to the environment as part of their Environment Month initiative. Their overarching goal is to engage visitors across different themes related to climate change, environmental awareness, wildlife conservation, and encourage reflection and action on various human phenomena and systems that degrade ecosystems and the environment. Local issues such as Kuwait being the biggest tire dump in the world, camping, overfishing, and the use of fishnets will also be a topic of reflection. Last year, TSCK hosted the eye-opening Re_use exhibit, curated by Zahed Sultan, that highlighted different environmental issues through the works of myriad local and internationally recognized artists. Internally they have also eliminated single use plastics from their office and in the gift shop. As part of their ongoing commitment to making the planet cleaner they are hosting an Environment Month initiative this year. From hands on activities to workshops and talks, there is going to be a lot of things that visitors can see, learn and explore. Kicking off all of the fun Earth-friendly activities for Environment month is the Green Market at TSCK. Scheduled to take place on March 19th from 5pm60

9pm and on March 20-21st from 9am-5pm, this will be the biggest Green Market in Kuwait hosting around 40+ different vendors! From environmentally conscious businesses, environment-friendly initiatives, food vendors, kids’ activities, and music performances, this market is not to be missed! Also happening throughout the month is TSCK’s desert and beach clean up in partnership with local initiative Trashtag Kuwait. This event hopes to bring awareness and to support environment friendly initiatives, plus, giving them space to sell and market their products during TSCK's 2020 Environment Month. Children and the young at heart love visiting TSCK for the Aquarium and Discovery Place. Both venues are getting an environment-themed makeover. Visitors can also watch a free screening for the documentary called Albotross. A new electric car will be on display and will also cover how the cars work compared to conventional fuel combustion engines. One of the best things about TSCK is their ability to invite diverse speakers who can cover a lot of intellectual ground. The Public Talks will take place on April 11 from 10am-5pm and are part of a collaboration with local cultural platform The Divan. The public talks will host a number of guest speakers from activists, pioneers, environmentalists, to experts on different environmental issues uniquely relevant to Kuwait. Listening to reformers like environmental consultant Samia Al Duaij and Founder of Refood Mariam Al Essa explain more about the environment and what we can do to help our beautiful land and earth is a great way to learn more as well as meet people with similar interests. Trying things with your own hands is usually a

game changer which is why the Workshop Programs are vital. They will be held mainly over the weekends of the month where the education team will offer visitors interactive programs to enhance their visit. Workshops are a great way to get families involved and engaged since they tend to be very hands on. This ensures that everybody goes home with a take away message about this glorious planet! From Animal Encounters, aimed at raising awareness about how different groups of living things have adapted to their environment to Eco-explorers Science Program for kids, designed for younger minds who want to know more about the Earth, TSCK has a wide array of programs suited for different ages. Make sure you don’t miss the Select LimitedTime Exhibits, either. Artist and architect Jassim Al Nashmi will be creating a semi-permanent installation for The Scientific Center titled “The Zubaidi”. The installation will help kids become more aware of recycling, with a partnering recycling company that will collect recyclables every week or month. We love TSCK and really appreciate how they are using their influence and clout to the transformation of the idea of Environment Month with events and fun activities that are educational and entertaining. Join them this month on their mission to make Kuwait a more environmentally aware place.

Environment Month runs from March 19th – April 22nd. The Scientific Center of Kuwait is located on Gulf Road, Salmiya, Block one. Follow their Instagram account @scicenterkw for more information.

BRAD PITT HAS ALREADY WON AWARDS SEASON

One fantastic speech at a time By Amy Haneline

Brad Pitt is having a moment. Well, several moments, really. He's raking in awards for his role as stunt double Cliff Booth in Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and with that comes opportunities in front of a captive audience. And, oh, has Pitt delivered. He got us laughing with a decades-old Titanic joke and sent all of America frantically searching for his Tinder profile. The comedic genius of those speeches comes "from the heart," Pitt says. "These people mean a lot to me. I want to say something meaningful ... And I have some funny friends," he told USA TODAY on the red carpet at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival. Pitt, 56, noted on the Screen Actors Guild Awards that he's "been banging away at this thing for 30 years." He did, after all, play a sexy young thief in 1991's Thelma & Louise. But his 50s are really bringing out the sass – and he admits it. "I'm old. It's amazing how much more relaxed you get the older you get, right?" he told USA TODAY on the SAG red carpet when asked about his carefree vibe. It's very likely that Pitt wins best supporting actor at the Oscars, so we can't wait for another one of his nonchalant, entertaining acceptance speeches. Here's a look back at his headline-grabbing moments this awards season (so far). Pitt to Leonardo DiCaprio: 'Still, I would've shared the raft' His succinct and hilarious aside had one fan calling Pitt an "absolute legend" while another said it "just made my life." When he accepted his best supporting actor award for Once Upon a Time at the Golden Globes, he wanted to recognize his co-star DiCaprio. "He's an all-star, he's a gent. ... Still, I would've shared the raft," he joked. Yep, that's a reference to DiCaprio's 1997 film Titanic because there was absolutely room on that floating door for Jack (DiCaprio) and Rose. Wait. Leo calls Brad lover? Speaking of DiCaprio, the two appear to have a budding bromance. At the Globes, we learned that Pitt lovingly calls DiCaprio "LDC." But LDC's nickname for Pitt is even more adorable. " 'Lover.' He calls me 'Lover,' " Pitt joked to People TV on the SAG Awards red carpet. "It's a bit confusing, but I roll with it." We would definitely swipe right on that Tinder profile As far as we know, Pitt is single, but we highly

doubt he is searching for love online. Still, that didn't stop him from joking about it. "I'm going to add this to my Tinder profile," he riffed while accepting his SAG Award. Plenty more Brad-isms came from that night, too. Apparently, he had come down with the flu and was "very contagious." "Make sure you guys Purell up," he joked to USA TODAY. "Why do you think I'm wearing this coat, man? I'm just trying to stay warm." Swiping right? Hold the phone. Pitt also poked fun at himself – and perhaps his failed marriages to Jennifer Aniston and Angelina Jolie – in his SAG speech. "Let's be honest, it was a difficult part," Pitt joked about Once Upon a Time. "A guy who gets high, takes his shirt off and doesn't get on with his wife. It was a big stretch. Big." The cameras panned to Aniston, who grinned and clapped. She won an award shortly after and Pitt stopped what he was doing to watch her speech backstage. The pair caused a frenzy when they were pictured together celebrating their wins. Pitt received the Leonard Maltin Modern Master Award at the Santa Barbara Film Festival

and dropped a hilarious bomb when he hesitantly acknowledged that he turned down a role in The Matrix. THE. MATRIX. "I took the red pill," he said with a smile and without missing a beat. In the film, Neo (the role ultimately went to Keanu Reeves), is offered a red pill or a blue pill. He chooses the red pill, which shows him "the truth," although it may be unpleasant. The blue pill represents the choice to remain in ignorance. "If we were doing a show on the great movies I've passed on, we would need two nights," Pitt joked. It hasn't been all jokes for Pitt, though. His frankness also came out when he accepted best supporting actor at the National Board of Review awards gala. He dedicated part of his speech to Cooper. "Bradley just put his daughter to bed and then rushed over to do this. He's a sweetheart." Pitt said. "I got sober because of this guy, and every day's been happier ever since. I love you, and I thank you." Pitt has been open about his struggle with sobriety before. In an interview with the New York Times last year, Pitt revealed he spent more than a year in Alcoholics Anonymous after splitting with Jolie.

BOOK HUNTING EXPEDITIONS Read more books, one story at a time By bazaar staff

There are few free indulgences in life like curling up in a corner with a good story and a cup of hot cocoa. But just like everything else, the habit of reading needs to be developed and cultivated. Avid readers will tell you that having a daily session of book time is the best way to go even if it is only 10-15 minutes. However, weekend-only reading is just as effective. It can also be a fun activity to go book hunting too. I understand that we live in a time when you can google a topic, find an interesting book, purchase it and have it sent to your e-reader or tablet all in under ten minutes, without ever having to leave your couch. But there are two problems with this scenario. First, buying books can become very expensive quite quickly. Second, despite my deep love of cutting-edge technology, I sometimes miss the tactile enjoyment of reading a paper book.

66

There is a third often forgotten problem, discarding books is terrible for the planet. Enter the used bookstore, a solution for all three problems. We have two fantastic stores in Kuwait that offer a wide variety of second-hand books; Q8books and Better Books. Q8books can be found in DAI’s Yarmouk Cultural Center and is a haven for book lovers. The kids and contemporary fiction selections are fantastic. Better Books in Salmiya has a great collection of Non-fiction and Sci-Fi books on the shelves. They also have the cutest, grumpiest white Persian cat that is open to belly rubs if you are deemed worthy. Both stores offer a credit system that allows you to drop off your read books and get a discount on the books you are picking up. Better Books is also a great community hub where you can find yoga classes, music lessons and many other different events that happen all year round. Both stores only accept books in good condition, so no need to worry about buying a damaged book, but still keep in mind that some of them might show some slight wear and tear. But my favorite thing is the little things you find between the pages. From ticket stubs to notes and unique bookmarks to postcards.

Popular books are always easier to find because more people have read them and are ready to part with them. Classics are another easy to find genre because they have been in circulation for longer and are often part of school curriculums, and students cannot get rid of them fast enough. Acquiring the books is the easiest part. The more challenging thing is to get through it. So only choose the books you love and want to read. Let go of the ones that are not bringing you joy and move on. Weekends are the best time to read for beginners. If you fall in love with a story and don’t want to put it down, the larger blocks of free time will help you keep going. Take your book to a café, you will get more reading done and look intellectual and smart to the outside world. And once you are done and if you liked it, pass it on to a friend or take it back to your favorite used bookstore.

JOJO RABBIT’S LONG MARCH

From controversial to awards darling, down the rabbit hole with 'Jojo' By Michael OrdoĂąa

Since it won the Toronto International Film Festival's People's Choice Award in September, its makers have been hopping along the awards-season trail. Writerdirector-actor-producer Taika Waititi has had award-winning films in his native New Zealand and ridden the Marvel train for his Thor: Ragnarok; but for young lead Roman Griffin Davis, this is his first go-round on the awards circuit. Waititi says, "I think Roman's done incredibly, with the amount of energy you have to have, and he's been flying back and forth a lot. "One night, I can't remember where we were, you were talking about how shallow it all is," he says to Davis, who made his film debut in Jojo and turned 13 a month after the Oscars. "Once in a while, you have a real conversation and you talk about ideas (in interviews), but those little three-minute ones you have to do again and again and again, you lose your mind. You don't know what you're talking about at the end." Davis boasts, "I've learned to not swear on live ... I've learned to control my inner swearer." Without looking up from her phone, his mother nods in confirmation from the corner of this Four Seasons suite. "I've learned what to say and what not to say. I used to just shout out whatever came to mind." It seems a long time ago that Jojo was controversial, people who hadn't even seen it were outraged at the notion of a comedy about a Hitler Youth member whose imaginary friend was Adolf Hitler himself. Critics had mixed responses, with The Times' Kenneth Turan saying: "Erratic but engaging, going in and out of daring, the film's mixture of black humor and unashamed sentimentality is not always as good as its best parts." Now, with three BAFTAs, one Oscar and fullthroated endorsement from organizations such as USC Shoah Foundation there's light at the end of the rabbit hole. Critics' Choice Award winner Davis has changed since the beginning of Jojo's promotional cycle. He was always gregarious and game to answer questions, but now he's more confident and assertive. He still looks like a mini rock star with his shock of blond curls and Bowie T-shirt. He happily notes Jojo is the fifth-highest-grossing film in his area of England: "It's probably because of my family and friends!" Waititi asks, "Have you got taller?" "My hair's gotten puffier. I don't show my hairline so you don't know where my head finishes. That's the tip," Davis deadpans. Waititi cops to exhaustion but insists he's

68

still excited: "I've really enjoyed all of it. And when the nominations came out, of course, all that love is amazing. And meeting people the film resonates with on a very personal level; something they've been through or their parents or someone, related to the story. "Comedy is such a great tool for combating bullying and dictatorships and ridiculous ideas and rules," he says. In the film, Jojo Betzler (Davis) is a zealous Nazi, until he discovers a young woman (Thomasin McKenzie) hidden away at the back of a closet in the apartment he shares with his mother (Scarlett Johansson). His father is off to points unknown and his mother is away a lot, leaving Jojo to spend time with the "monster" Jew and to inevitably realize she is simply a person like him. The Shoah Foundation agrees the film could have healing powers; it launched an educational initiative in December pairing content from the movie with survivors' testimony. The foundation's announcement said, in part, "Jojo Rabbit demonstrates how individuals can overcome ingrained prejudices and hate."

"When we were editing (archival footage), I thought about the impact of Hitler on the German people in the '30s; the fervor, that mania, was similar to Beatlemania. That's where that opening comes from," he says of using the Beatles' Germanlanguage version of "I Want to Hold Your Hand," "Komm, Gib Mir Deine Hand," in the opening credits. "I was looking at documentaries and there was footage from rallies and I'm looking at these crowds, the screaming women and the babies, and I thought, 'Whoa. That really looks like Beatlemania.' The ingrained picture in contemporary media is of Nazi hate rallies, book burnings, images of viciousness. Those are real, but how did it come to that? Waititi says, "It's all about making (people) feel good and empowered again after the Depression, taking their power back." Davis relates stories of classmates seeing the film and learning from it, and of a teenage girl telling him she was writing about it for a school project. Waititi says, "That's amazing. The film was really designed for ... I wanted to make sure it was PG so that kids could see it."

The SS20 Conscious Exclusive collection will be sold in selected stores and hm.com on March 26. Arriving as H&M’s ultimate premium womenswear collection of the most elevated pieces, Conscious Exclusive promises and delivers on a sustainable approach in both the materials used and the processes employed. “For SS20, the Conscious Exclusive design team took a truly holistic approach to sustainability, considering the emotional durability and the afterlife of the garments in more detail than ever before. As always we have worked with some innovative materials such as CIRCULOSE, a natural material harvested from used textiles; used a natural dye made from coffee grounds collected from H&M’s own production offices. We remain committed to creating special, sustainable pieces that will truly last a lifetime,” says Ann-Sofie Johansson, creative advisor at H&M. KEY PIECES Riviera stripes, balletic silhouettes and delicate ribbon embellishments conspire to create a charming and feminine collection. Key pieces include a floor-length, tiered, tulle recycled polyester ball gown; a recycled taffeta mini dress with pleated sleeves; an extravagant coldshoulder with tulle ruffles top made of RENU, a recycled polyester made from clothes and fabrics; an easy, blue day dress with feminine ruffles made of CIRCULOSE , a natural material harvested from used textiles; a statement recycled taffeta blouse with embellished sleeves; and a relaxed linen-silk blazer with a grosgrain tie. ACCESSORIES Decadent coral motifs play out in recycled brass and zinc on statement earrings and cocktail rings, on padded hairbands and on delicate shoulder pieces with rhinestone clasps. cocktail slippers embellished with a knot of recycled glass beads (leftover from a previous collection) are a key piece, adding wear-anywhere poise to the most flamboyant of evening gowns. Meanwhile, a grape leather belt bag with detachable straps is the ultimate in versatile arm candy. SUSTAINABLE MATERIALS AND PROCESSES Leftover stock fabrics from previous collections, including organic silk, recycled polyester-taffeta, and recycled glass beads make a welcome return in opulent new iterations. Also in the line-up is CIRCULOSE, a natural material produced from recycled textiles. The discarded cellulosic fibres are dissolved into pure, biodegradable pulp, then turned into new fibres, yarn, fabrics and garments. For the first time, the collection also contains denim which is made of 100 % undyed organic cotton in a fabric that is recyclable and has a lower environmental impact as its production minimizes the use of chemicals and simplifies the reusage of processed water. Also included is RENU , a recycled polyester made in a unique garment-to-garment process that fully closes the loop by turning clothes and textiles, which would have been thrown away, into new fabric. Then, there is VEGEA, an innovative vegan material partly made from the by-products of winemaking, where discarded grape skins, stalks and seeds are turned into a beautiful alternative to leather. Elsewhere, ECONYL, a regenerated nylon made from discarded fishing nets; recycled brass and zinc, from pre-consumer sources such as scrap electronics and jewelry; and biodegradable Corozo buttons made from the seed of a tropical palm all feature. “The starting point for SS20 was the notion of glamorous, stress-free train travel, specifically Le Train Bleu. We felt it was wonderfully symbolic of H&M’s magical journey as a company towards circularity. We were so inspired by the decadent creatives such as Jean Cocteau and Pablo Picasso who were hanging out at Villa Santo Sospir, the socialite Francine Weisweiller’s beautiful home in Cap Ferrat. We wanted to design clothes that mimicked that carefree time and that will still prove poetic in years to come – to us, that’s the definition of sustainable design,” says Ella Soccorsi, designer at H&M.

COS COLLABORATES WITH

BIO-DESIGNERS ECOLOGICSTUDIO

Look out for the final installation at Salone Del Mobile 2020 By bazaar staff

We always mark our calendars for the renowned Salone del Mobile in anticipation of London-based fashion brand COS’s artistic installations. Since 2012, COS has presented unique and innovative collaborations with artists, designers, and architects in Milan during Salone del Mobile.

74

Past collaborators include Gary Card, Bonsoir Paris, Nendo, Snarkitecture, Sou Fujimoto, Phillip K. Smith III and Arthur Mamou-Mani, in addition to Studio Swine, whose COS installation New Spring, won the Milano Design Award for Most Engaging Exhibition during Milan Design Week 2017 and has since been exhibited during Design Miami/ and at The Bell Tower in Chang Ning, Shanghai in 2019. COS will return to this year’s edition of Milan Design Week to present a large-scale collaboration with architecture and urban design practice ecoLogicStudio, marking the brand’s ninth consecutive installation during Salone del Mobile. Going beyond being our ultimate destination for wardrobe staples and reinvented classics, COS stays true to a design ethos that is constantly inspired by the arts to deliver modern, timeless, functional and tactile design. This is why their collaboration with ecoLogicStudio arrives as part of the brand’s natural commitment to work with artists, galleries and creative studios. ecoLogicStudio is an architectural and urban design studio pioneering the integration of living systems in the built environment. Co-founded in

London in 2005 by Claudia Pasquero and Marco Poletto, the studio has built an international reputation for its innovative projects ranging from the small-scale artistic installations, to architectural pavilions and to large scale eco-masterplans. The work of ecoLogicStudio has featured at the most important Architectural Biennales, including Venice (2008, 2010, 2016, 2020), World Expos (Milano and Astana) and international art museums such as the Centre Pompidou in Paris 2019 and the Mori Art Museum in Tokyo, 2019. In 2014 the Metropolis Magazine in New York nominated ecoLogicStudio among the ten most interesting global emergent practices. Claudia Pasquero has been recently included in the top ten of Wired Smart List, selecting global innovation rising stars. ecoLogicStudio maintains close links with internationally renowned Academic and Research Institutions and is currently part of the Photosynthetica venture in partnership with the Urban Morphogenesis Research Lab at UCL London, and the Landscape Architecture / Synthetic Landscapes Lab at the University of Innsbruck. COS and ecoLogicStudio’s upcoming installation

seeks to augment the interaction between the natural world and the built environment, presenting an interactive structure that bridges design and science. The immersive experience is brought to life through innovation which incorporates a diverse group of photosynthetic organisms; algae. The work will explore the concept of circularity with new ways of incorporating biotechnology into the urban realm through the prism of design. While highly innovative, the installation draws inspiration from the rich history of the Palazzo which will host it and from Leonardo da Vinci’s 16th Century studies on water turbulence that lead to the conception of Milan’s canals system. The installation itself will remove carbon from the atmosphere, as a result of the photosynthetic process it enables, and will provide the context to investigate the multiple uses and benefits of micro-algae within the Palazzo’s walled garden. “Sustainability and material innovation have always been at the core of COS.” said Karin Gustafsson, Creative Director of COS. “For Salone del Mobile this year our hope was to explore nature’s innovations and how these can be harnessed to offer new ways to live our day-to-day lives while reducing our impact on the environment and our planet. ecoLogicStudio’s important work displays not only how science and biology can inform and refine our processes, but also be viewed as part of the aesthetic. We are thrilled to be able collaborate on bringing their work to Milan on a grand scale.” Claudia Pasquero and Marco Poletto of ecoLogicStudio note “We’re delighted to be collaborating with COS to create an installation that represents an important and timely new step for us. We have been working for several years with the regenerative capability of many of our planet’s organisms to design circular processes converting what our cities expel into sustainable raw materials and nutrients. With this project we have the unique opportunity to bring micro-algae’s photosynthetic force to the city center of Milano, and the chance to address the relationship between art and science in the public realm, a fascination that we share with COS and that forms the basis our collaboration’’.

The installation will be open to the public from the 21st to 25th of April, 2020 at Palazzo Isimbardi, Corso Monforte 35, 20122 Milan. See more details about the project at cosstores.com/salone. FRAUDULENT FACEBOOK FRIENDS AND HOW TO SPOT THEM

No one wants to be conned By Ayman Nassar

Of all the things in the world that unite us, friendship is the most wonderful. It is strong enough to endure the most of trying of circumstances, and yet equally fickle in that it could collapse at the smallest of inactions and often, fall victim to fraud. We all go through the habit of collecting friends; not in a bizarre way entailing isolation/ preservation in a glass environment akin to rare insects, but in a funny way akin to how once upon a time we collected stamps, coins and other trinkets/ tokens. These amusing artifacts were stored preciously and kept safe, to be gazed at only in times of longing, as their value would hopefully appreciate with time. Previously, we had our friends segregated by such titles as neighbors, work colleagues, associates, school chums, university pals, travel buddies etc. following the advice of Seinfeld’s George Costanza about the Worlds Theory. Nowadays however, our collection of friends is no longer limited to our speeddials, but rather brazenly put on display in the most vivacious of ways; Facebook. Facebook, the melting pot of all things, where your grannie’s happy birthday post is liked and seen by the friend you recently met whilst scuba-diving off the coast of your latest adventure destination. That kind of transparency is at times slightly perturbing, for the collision of worlds is not necessarily a good thing. One soon learns that just because something looks like a duck, it does not necessarily entail any aspects of duck-dom. Case in point, the recent wave of identity theft sweeping Facebook. It starts innocently enough; you receive a notification of an incoming message from an old acquaintance. Nothing newsworthy. It’s a rather boring, been a while, how have you been? You respond as you usually would, not thinking much of the entire situation. And then comes the hook, in my case it was, and I quote “did you heard about the good news on Facebook about the CEO of Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg??” The intrepid reporter in me should have, upon intuiting the scamming nature of the comment, dug deeper for more information and attempted to infiltrate the Facebook hijackers. I simply responded with a question of my own, tell me how we met. For you may look like a duck (please kindly note that I am in no way referring to my unfortunate hacked friend as a duck) but do you have that duck's memories? Their response was agitated and riddled with sloppy spelling and grammatical gaffs. Feeling that Facebook was compromised, and since I had no number to reach said friend who had since moved to Guam, I messaged them on neutral grounds – LinkedIn. They then confirmed my suspicion, their account had been infiltrated. 76

Full disclosure – this had happened to me once before, a ghost from the past reached out asking for money, however, as they were able to answer the sphinx’s riddle (I asked them questions from over a decade or more ago) I verified they truly were my friend and in need and I jumped to their assistance. Now, far be it for me to toot my own horn, but some people might not be as skeptical of the online world as I and could unwillingly fall prey to such predators. It is not only your identity theft you need to worry about, it is that should an acquaintance of yours be ensnared in such a trap, you become a target as well. It may not be as obvious as financial theft, at least not immediately. It could be a request to follow a certain link, download a certain app, anything that gains access to your trusted device and all the secrets (i.e. passwords, bank apps etc.) it holds. Remember how before you would argue, do

not carry cash as it is easily stolen/ misplaced? Have you kept up with the times that would have you send physical cash through an ATM to anyone with a mobile number? It has become all too easy nowadays to dubiously part ways with your hardearned money as a result of something phish-y. Guard your online presence well, for you have no way of knowing who is truly on the other side. And remember, it is better to be cautious that cashless.

Like the Rubik’s Cube, Ayman Nassar is multicolored in his interests, from running to organizing races, stand- up comedy and internal audit, plus a little writing on the side. You can find him on YouTube or follow him on Instagram @LordAymz. Photo by Hannah Rodrigo on Unsplash.

HER IMAGE, HER STORY

& Other Stories celebrates Women’s Day with a series of self-portraits by renowned photographers By bazaar staff

International Women’s Day is extra special at & Other Stories, as not only does the brand value the occasion by marking the day with many talented and diverse women, they also commemorate their anniversary! This year, & Other Stories celebrates selfexpression by inviting photographers they admire to turn the lens on themselves. In a series of self-portraits, they reflect on what it means to capture one’s authentic self, encouraging others to do the same and own their stories.

Follow her @bukunmigrace. Amanda Charchian “Since working with nature brings in an ever-changing element, this is truly a selfportrait in a moment that could never be recreated.” Amanda Charchian is an L.A.-based photographer. Follow her @amanda_charchian.

Ever since their launch in 2013, & Other Stories have collaborated with a wide range of inspiring creatives to mark International Women’s Day, such as Kim Gordon, Rachel Antonoff, Lena Dunham, Iris Apfel, Hari Nef, Kate and Laura from Rodarte, Giorgia Lupi, Tennessee Thomas of The Deep End Club, fashion stylist Camille Bidault-Waddington and liberating dance group L.A. City Municipal Dance Squad. “& Other Stories always encouraged individuality, so we wanted to make this year's Women's Day a true celebration of self-expression. By collaborating with photographers that we admire, asking them to share their stories through self-portraits, we hope to inspire our customers to reflect on their expressions and feel compelled to explore the powers of this age-old practice,” says Anna Nyrén, Head of Co-Labs, & Other Stories. Bringing us their most self-reflective campaign to date, together, & Other Stories and nine talented photographers from around the world. Gia Coppola, Wang Ziqian, Amanda Charchian, Grace Bukunmi, Lottermann & Fuentes, Wai Lin Tse, Laura Kampman and Ewa-Marie Rundquist, exhibit their selfportraits along with the stories they tell. Here’s a glimpse of what they had to say about this introspective artistic experiment. Gia Coppola “I like the kind of haphazardness of life and those fleeting in-between moments that are less constructed and posed. That allows magic to happen.” Gia Coppola is a photographer and filmmaker based in L.A. Her upcoming film Mainstream is premiering later this year. Follow her @mastergia.

Lottermann & Fuentes “Our self-portrait is set at Astro Burger, our favourite diner in L.A. There is something elusive about that place and the characters it attracts. Wai Lin Tse “It made sense for me to take this portrait in the landscape of Montserrat, where my mother was from. I also brought along my hiking companion Leia [the dog].” Wai Lin Tse is a Barcelona-based photographer. Follow her @wailintse. Laura Kampman “My self-portraits embody my relationship

with myself, similar to a diary from which I reason with and hope to express the need to be vulnerable.” Laura Kampman is a photographer based in the Netherlands. Follow her @laurakampman. Ewa-Marie Runquist “Apart from what it represents to me on a personal level, I like to use smoke in my images to add another dimension and bring the picture into a twilight zone between dreams and reality. My garden, where the selfportrait was taken, is a bit like such a twilight zone.”Ewa-Marie Rundquist is a Stockholmbased photographer. Follow her @ewamarierundquist. Wang Ziqian “I believe that there is a wild, innate, and primitive energy that everyone is born with, and that’s what I’m trying to capture in my images. I like things that are pure and simple, and I hope this energy shines through in my work.” Wang Ziqian is a photographer based in Shanghai. Follow her @z.qiann. & Other Stories hopes to encourage their audience to embrace the thought of expressing themselves and share their selfportrait in their Instagram feed by using the hashtag #herimageherstory.

THIS IS HOW TO NOT FAIL AT FAILING It is an art form By Roi Ben-Yehuda

On November 10, 2019, I created a personal Slack channel for my company, LifeLabs Learning, to lose 10 pounds by the end of the year. The message: “This is the 10 lb challenge! It’s conceited and hardcore. You ready?” Around 20% of the organization ended up joining the challenge (including one of our CEOs). Every week, members weighed in, starting at 10 pounds (if someone lost two pounds, they would weigh in at eight). The goal was to get to zero. Throughout our time together, we sent notes and pictures of encouragement and shared tips for success. We even named the group The Lightweights. But in the end, we all failed to reach that goal.

92

[Continued...]

Investigating the failure Since one of our core values at LifeLabs Learning is to “Always be Learning,” I asked the group why we came up short. The following were some of their hypotheses: • Doing it during the holidays was wishful thinking on my part. • I didn’t tether the goal to a bigger “why.” • I put zero structures in place to make it happen. • I let myself off the hook way too easily. • I didn’t hold myself accountable (or ask to be held accountable). • Doing it while visiting my parents was too much emotional labor. • I ended up focusing too much on the shiny extrinsic goal. • I didn’t plan my workouts. These are all classic mistakes, but there is also something extraordinary about them. What most of these insights have in common is that they take ownership of the failure. This practice goes against our all-too-human tendency to blame mistakes on

external events or people. The good news is that research shows that people who take ownership of their mistakes are more likely to learn from them. Why is learning from failure so rare and difficult? To fail at something is to (potentially) demonstrate incompetence. The cost, at least in our minds, is often catastrophic (loss of a job, relationship, respect, etc.). As human beings, we have a natural aversion toward loss. As a result, we approach the possibility of failure with trepidation (the technical term for this fear is atychiphobia). Studies show our bodies register failure as pain. Failure also runs against the grain of our selfesteem. To fail at something means entertaining the possibility that perhaps we’re not as great as we’d like to believe. It’s not by accident that most people tend to attribute success to their efforts, while failure to circumstance. This bias, also known as the Fundamental Attribution Error, often obstructs people from gleaning lessons from their mistakes.

Most work environments don’t help much either. Organizations that are hyper-focused on end results have a low tolerance for experimentation and provide little time for reflection end up creating hostile conditions for learning. So what do we need to do to stop failing at failing? 1. Normalize it In his book, Never Stop Learning: Stay Relevant, Reinvent Yourself, and Thrive, Bradley Staats argues that the key to learning from mistakes is to destigmatize failure. This means recognizing that failure is a normal (and at times, healthy) consequence of working in a complex environment. At LifeLabs Learning, we normalize failure for our team by explicitly acknowledging the value of failure in our candidate interviews, during onboarding, and in our weekly team meetings. And in manager training we do for our clients, we normalize failure with workshop participants by calling it a critical part of the learning cycle. 2. Air it out In Italy, there is a saying that a fish on top of the table stinks less than one under it. Put your failures (fish) on top of the proverbial table, and let the air circulate. Research shows that learning about other

94

[...Continued]

people’s struggles improves performance. At Torres Wine Vineyard, for example, employees are required to inscribe their mistakes in a Black Book. As part of the onboarding process, there is a requirement for new recruits to read the book and internalize its message—we make and take ownership of our mistakes. 3. Be a failure role model Airing your mistakes is effective because people often learn best through social modeling. As author Daniel Coyle has written, “No signal is so powerful as a leader who is open about their own mistakes.” In our research on what makes great managers, we’ve seen the same phenomenon. A great example comes from Nobel Laureate Frances Arnold, who recently tweeted: “For my first work-related tweet of 2020, I am totally bummed to announce that we have retracted last year’s paper on enzymatic synthesis of betalactams. The work has not been reproducible. It is painful to admit, but important to do so. I apologize to all. I was a bit busy when this was submitted, and did not do my job well.” Arnold’s tweet led to hundreds of comments, including fellow scientists congratulating her for publicly and courageously admitting her mistake.

4. Create a safe environment Studies show that the best-run hospitals report 10 times more errors than their less effective counterparts. The key differentiator of great hospitals (and workplaces) is a climate of psychological safety— where employees can share perspectives and report mistakes without fearing censure or termination. Some practical ways to generate psychological safety include adopting values centered around learning and transparency. Other suggestions include implementing processes aimed at uncovering errors (e.g., after-action reviews, postmortems, etc.), and teaching leaders to acknowledge their own fallibility. Saying there’s value in learning from mistakes doesn’t mean that we fetishize failure. It means that we understand that failing is an inevitable part of our fast-paced, ever-changing, and complicated working life. Those who can succeed at failing will triumph in the age of lifelong learning we now find ourselves in. Next time you do something challenging, don’t ask yourself, “Will I fail? Instead, ask yourself, “How will I learn from my failures?”

SHARED MOMENTS

MANGO SS20 campaign reflects the intimate nature of moments spent together By bazaar staff

Mango continues with the Shared Moments concept in a new campaign for the Spring/Summer 2020 season. The images and the video were captured by the iconic British photographer Glen Luchford, author of emblematic images throughout a fashion career spanning three decades.

96

The highly acclaimed photographer captured Anna Ewers, Rebecca Leigh Longendyke, Vittoria Ceretti, Kit Butler and Hamid Onifade in the mixed campaign. And in line with MANGO’s commitment to protecting the environment, the garments in the women’s collection, particularly inspired by the 70s, were created with 100% sustainable fabrics Shot in the Mexican cities of Valladolid and Merida, the setting perfectly encapsulates their shared summer adventures. Shared Moments reinforces the concept of togetherness present in the brand's communication. The campaign focuses on community spirit through a video and images that extol the virtues of the intimacy and naturalness of shared moments, celebrating a moment of true complicity and at the same time, the expression of one’s self. This sense of belonging to the same community is reinforced by the Your choices make us initiative, which Mango launched last November. Via Instagram, followers of the brand took the decisions regarding this campaign and the new SS20 campaign. Under the slogan “Look. Participate. Decide”, Mango’s creative team is launching a pioneering project in which over 11 million followers of the brand can choose some of the garments the models have worn during the campaign, as well as interacting with them with amusing decisions relating to the trip to Mexico and the moments shared with the others. It is a Choose your own Adventure, but make it fashion! Also, with some of the garments and accessories in this new collection, they have decided which ones they prefer will be sent to the stores. An interest in fashion, culture, style and art is a common value shared by the brand and its community, the aim being to make the creation of shared spaces and conversations a key part of all its communications. Based on the responses sent by the Instagram followers, Mango launched a guide to Mexico on January 20, which includes the essential locations in the region, as well as art galleries and museums. The designs, mainly inspired by 70s style, are inundated with prints, especially floral ones, and colors, with pastel tones taking center stage. The suits with matching waistcoats are one of the key products, while flowing dresses with a summery air are also key in this collection. Accessories such as strap sandals and basket-style bags add personality to each outfit.

RED BULL’S NEYMAR JR. FIVE GLOBAL TOURNAMENT

Teams face off worldwide to win a spot at the finals! By bazaar staff

International football player, Neymar, who is admired by many football lovers around the world will be bringing his personal flair and astonishing expertise at the Red Bull Neymar Five Championship to proudly crown the best Five-a-side team in the world. The qualifiers are already underway, and will continue throughout the months of March and April. The teams will be competing in a ten-minute, five-a-side football match that is based on Neymar’s own rules. The pitch dimensions are 30m by 18m as teams will be forfeiting a player with each goal scored against them. Teams will also be playing without goalkeepers, which is going to be challenging! They 98

will try to score the most goals, or until one team runs out of players. Both men and women teams are eligible to play between the ages of 17 to 25. The fast-paced nature of the tournament means that spectators can take in multiple matches at each event; watching, witnessing, and fully supporting their very own local talent rise among dozens of other teams, just for the privilege to compete in the World Final. The event will be held in the Instituto Projeto Neymar Jr, in Praia Grande, Brazil later on this year. This is definitely the most popular five-a-side football tournament in the world by both participation and reach. Plus, for non-professional athletes, it will give them a chance to personally meet the Paris Saint-Germain phenomenon on the pitch, and maybe even snatch a priceless selfie!

Last year, over 400,000 players signed up from more than 75 countries. This year sees higher projections, with teams competing in seven continents for the 2020 edition of the Neymar Jr Five Global Tournament. This year also marks the 5th Edition of the global competition. Additionally, The State of Kuwait will be hosting the qualifiers of this year’s tournament on March 30th and 31st, as well as on April 1st, 13th15th , with a National Final taking place on April 17, 2020.

WHEN BUREAUCRACY WINS

Wednesday morning at the Ministry of Education By Craig Loomis

“I am so sorry, Mr. Hashem, but because your security card has expired, I can’t do anything for you and your children. You will have to renew your security card before we can assist you,” she says, fingering the paper in front of her. “What did you say?” And so she says it again, only this time leaving out the renewal part. “Impossible.” “No, I am afraid it is very possible. So very sorry.” And with that she hands the paper back to him while motioning to the man behind him. “Next.” Because Ms. Hatem had been with the ministry of education for almost seven years, she has seen her fair share of disgruntled students, rabid parents, weepy grandparents and wasta-minded cousins declaring, “You will be hearing from my lawyer,” and so on. And so when Mr. Hashim said ‘Impossible,’ she thinks nothing of it—a minor unhappiness in the grand scale of MOE things. Mr. Hashem is not tall, some would even call him short, but he has five children, and four of the five are in desperate need of schooling, and lots of it, so even though the man behind him shoulders his way pass, Mr. Hashem continues to blink, thinking he has misheard, or an easily explained misunderstanding, 100

for sure. Meanwhile, as others flow around him, like water around a rock, he slowly steps out of line and moves to the biggest window in the room, the sunlight a huge yellow splash across the floor, almost to the wall. Once at the window, he turns, counts to five and then says, “I will jump.” But because he doesn’t say it loud enough, with conviction, only one man standing next to him, near the window, hears, and so seeing what is what, Mr. Hashem says it again, only louder, “I will jump.” A big silence immediately fills the room, as all heads turn as one to look. And he says it yet again, louder still, never mind that he is not very big. “If I don’t get what I want, what I need for my kids, what they deserve, I will jump. I will kill myself. I’ll jump. Wallah. If you don’t overlook this… this silly rule, regulation, I will jump and you and your office will have to answer for what comes next. Do you understand? Do you?” A couple of newly-interested men move closer to the window, peering through the glass, at the parking lot across the street. More silence until someone somewhere says, “But we are on the ground floor.” Mr. Hashem squints through the sunlight to see who said that, but there are too many faces, a riot of dishashas, hijabs and assorted abayas, to choose from. The best he can do is search for a smirk, a grin, something like a smart-alecky grimace, but nothing. All of this pushes him from angry to

furious, and he reaches into his pocket, pulls out his cigarette lighter and flings it against the ministry wall. It shatters, leaving a white scar on the wall. “Fine, then I’ll take the elevator to the top floor, to the very top, I’ll show you, I’ll show all of you,” he yells. “You don’t think I know what I am talking about? You don’t think I know how to kill myself? Is that what you’re saying?” The silence holds, until the invisible voice answers, “Just saying that there is not much of a jump here, from the ground floor. A little rolling in the dirt is not the stuff of suicide, sah?” This is when Ms. Hatem, finally, steps away from her desk to, first, take a closer look at the scar he has created in the wall, running her fingertips over it, nodding, and second, saying, ”Sorry to say, the elevator is out of order, Mr. Hashem, but they say it will be fixed by the end of the day, so maybe if you can return later, say around 3:30, or better yet, we open tomorrow at 9:00 sharp, I am sure the elevator will be functioning then, and you can go higher, say, the sixth floor, that should do it.” Stepping back to her desk, sitting in her chair that makes a leathery groan, she turns to the man patiently waiting in front of her desk with a handful papers, saying, “Now, where were we?” Photo by Matheus Vinicius on Unsplash.

DISCOVER IKEA 360

CEO Marino Maganto tells us more about the new, inspirational and immersive IKEA experience By bazaar staff

From enjoying a dip in the ball pit as children to furnishing our first homes, IKEA has been a large part of our lives for the last 36 years. Last month the brand-new IKEA 360, located in the new extension of 360 Kuwait was open to the public. And we have to tell you, it is a totally new and welcome experience. The brand has always been customer-responsive and prides themselves on being great listeners to what customers ask for. We met with IKEA Al Homaizi Ltd. CEO Mr. Marino Maganto who explained that in Kuwait, the living room and bedroom are the most important areas of the home. People really spend a 102

lot of time in these rooms and want these spaces to be special. IKEA has seen this directly reflected in their sales; sofas and beds are their bestsellers. The research team took that knowledge when they created IKEA 360 which strongly focuses on Living Room and Bedroom. IKEA is a people company, they sell lifestyle solutions not just products, so they try really hard to understand people and Marino believes that people intuitively understand this and this is why they love shopping at IKEA. The new IKEA 360 was designed to inspire you and show different solutions to everyday concerns that most people have. By focusing on dreams, needs and wishes, the brand has been able to come up with different setups for closets, living spaces and bedrooms that suit every lifestyle, budget and taste.

Marino also told us that they were happy about the new location in 360 Kuwait because it offered them the “fantastic opportunity to be closer to their customers”. IKEA 360’s 3000 square meter space is dedicated to bedrooms and living rooms which is comparable to the same areas at The Avenues. Designed to purposefully show different room designs, the new space is inspirational as it is functional. The new store offers a more personalized experience. They have created the brand new “Design Lounge” so you can be served and aided by a large team of home furnishing experts who can show you how to make the most of your home. They accept walk-ins, but you can also make an appointment if you want to take your time and really benefit from their amazing design team.

As shoppers, we loved browsing the different rooms. We could easily identify the products IKEA has always been known for, but in the new setup everything looks better utilized and more upscale. We love that we can now design the room of our dreams at the same affordable IKEA prices we all know, love and depend on. They are also purposefully not calling it a showroom because this is something that has never been done before. IKEA is experimenting with new and different formats that they hope to share with the rest of the world. The brand is not moving away from big-store-formats, but is hoping to implement this more intimate approach in all the markets they operate in. And as Marino put it succinctly “This is a new way for us to present our ranges and communicate our designs.” The IKEA Café, is another new addition. It is a completely different from the restaurant or the bistro that can be found in The Avenues. This little cozy eatery focuses on healthy and sustainable eating habits. You will find freshly made salads, smoothies, fresh juice and a whole array of new things that will also be taken to the Avenues later on. And don’t worry, they still serve their flaky buttery pastries that we all love. The menu is also going to be seasonal, so salads and smoothies will change based on the availability of fresh produce. As we were browsing the mattress range, a staff member told us to slow down in front of the beds. And as we did, we noticed that the music changed. The store uses cutting edge motion detection technology to offer you a fully immersive experience. Which is an amazing accomplishment considering the entire project took just under six months from conception to opening. “My favorite thing about the new space is the journey the team made to get here [and get it open],” Marino told us. In her opening ceremony speech, Ms Fadwa Al Homaizi, Managing Director and Chairman of the board summed it all up by saying “We want to exceed their expectations and fulfil their Home Furnishing needs and dreams with well designed, smart and functional solutions with the best value for money.” And we believe they have done just that. This is an experience that we truly enjoyed as customers and long-time IKEA fans.

FINDING BEQUIA

Secret paradise By Carol Ann Davidson

Bequia, from the air, gleams like an emerald drop in the variegated blue and green necklace of the remote archipelago Saint Vincent and Grenadines. All seven square miles of it is home to 5,000 people of African, Scottish and Island Carib descent. It's off the beaten track just enough to stave off hordes of tourists, but idyllic enough to beckon adventurous spirits. Enter Bengt Mortstedt, the jovial Swedishborn former lawyer, and self-proclaimed "accidental hotelier." In the early 1990s he and his family were beguiled by Bequia while on a sailing vacation through the Grenadines. "It was unspoiled, a rugged beauty," he said. While walking the milelong Friendship Beach, a few years later, he spotted a For Sale sign in front of an old, closed B&B. The rest is history. On New Year's Eve 2009 his creation, the Bequia Beach Hotel, was born on nine acres fronting the sea. The luxury hotel is refreshingly unpretentious: a modern take on colonial Caribbean architecture, known for its playful colors and relaxed charm. Mortstedt's model for the hotel riffs on the '50s, imbuing the property with the nostalgia of seaside resorts of yesteryear. If a picture is worth a thousand words, then the collection of retro-style travel posters created by California's Kerne Erickson, placed throughout the property, speaks volumes on the realization of Mortstedt's vision. Each of the 58 guest rooms, suites and private villas displays its own personality while they're united in designs that include four-poster beds cocooned in white voile canopies, vintage rattan furniture, contemporary bathrooms and spacious terraces. The panoramic view from my 700-square-foot Beachfront Suite embraced the beach: palms and thatched umbrellas anchored in the sand, while the island of Mustique rested on the horizon. Interconnecting paths meander around gardens flush with flowers, shrubs and old growth trees tended by Matthew, master gardener. On Wednesdays, guests can follow him and his green thumbs on a horticulture tour. A section of the garden slopes up a hillside where one of the property's three restaurants, Blue Tropic, serves Italian food. Further up the hill is perched a selection of varied accommodations whose views are spectacular. The largest of these is the 4,860-square-foot Estate Villa replete with its own kitchen, infinity pool, two master bedrooms and two twin bedrooms. A butler and a chef at your service, if you please. 104

A second infinity pool, hillside, is available for all hotel guests, but each morning at 7, I chose to swim in the spacious pool a stone's throw from the beach. The first morning it rained cats and dogs but the pool water was warm and I was willing. Within minutes the sun emerged revealing a rainbow arching over the hills. Perfection. Mortstedt and his son, Philip, have extended their reach to another area of Bequia, Princess Margaret Beach, where Jack's Beach Bar draws customers to curated cocktails and seafood well suited to any princess and her prince. While I lunched on fresh fish and Grenadine greens, kids and adults alike frolicked in the sea below. The nine-seater Bequia Air VIP Transfer that flew me from Barbados to Bequia is owned by the hotel, so too the Star of the Sea, a luxury 114-foot yacht that guests can rent for private charters along the Grenadines highway of islands. One sunny morning, I joined a group on board and cruised serenely along the Tobago Cays. Near our yacht, a pod of orcas breached in unison until out of view. We snorkeled and swam with the turtles on a tiny Robinson Caruso-like island The yacht staff produced a sumptuous lunch and plied us with unlimited drinks as we wended our way back home into the sunset. In no small measure, part of the comfort and charm of Bequia Beach Hotel is due to the

240-member staff. Their genuine caring is a gift to each guest. Most come from the island, some from neighboring shores and others from farther away, including five chefs who trained in Europe. After spending a couple of days exploring Bequia, I discovered that almost every member of the staff is a friend or a relative of almost everyone else on the entire island. We walked the Boardwalk in Admiralty Harbour, where the ice-cream parlor was at full scoop, and white sail boats bobbed in the bay. Climbed high in the hills to the more residential area of Mount Pleasant where the views are nothing short of spectacular. Coming back down to sea level, Lower Bay offers a popular beach where grabbing a fresh tuna sandwich, a cold beer and a plunge in the waves at Da Reef Restaurant and Bar is a Bequia ritual. Nearby is Dawn's, where at sundown we ate at the tiny restaurant owned by a petite woman named, not surprisingly, Dawn. Her smile and home-cooked food were equally enticing. Back at the Bequia Beach Hotel, for my last evening, I sipped a cocktail at the openair bar, dined on lobster with a family from Surrey, England, and listened to a band of local musicians perform late into the night. There's magic on the island, strangers become friends, Bequia's breezes burn into your memory and tourists will continue to come.

KUWAIT CALLING Don’t miss the phenomenal world premiere at Sheikh Jaber Al Ahmed Cultural Centre on March 11-14 By bazaar staff

“Unbelievable” is the ultimate word to describe Kuwait Calling, Sheikh Jaber Al Ahmed Cultural Centre’s extraordinary world premiere on March 11 – 14. Kuwait Calling will showcase the story of Kuwait in the most innovative and riveting outdoor performance ever, cleverly combining live choreography, innovative music and projection mapping with motion-capture suits. The scale of this production is unprecedented. “It’s almost eerily good,” said Reham Al Samerai, the Head of Creative Production at Sheikh Jaber Al Ahmed Centre (JACC). JACC has been synonymous with bringing the world’s best shows to its stage, be it through astounding performances by global artists or their legendary in-house productions. “Kuwait Calling is truly something else. It will blow everyone away,” said Al Samerai with a proud smile as she described the epitome of a truly magical performance that will be projected on the shimmering titanium façade of JACC’s buildings, turning the unique architectural-scale projection into the ultimate environment for a live performance. With its inspiration firmly rooted in innovative music derived from Kuwait’s rich past as well as traditional and modern dance, Kuwait Calling will transport audiences on a fast-moving, timetravelling journey starting from the desert origins of Kuwaiti culture to the sea and back to the city. In doing so, Kuwait Calling will create a story that is both historical and fantastical as it goes through three different phases: Emergence in the desert, opportunity at sea and finally arriving at civilization, Kuwait’s people. Kuwait Calling is also a celebratory expression of Kuwait’s culture and its connection with the world. The main source of

inspiration is Kuwait’s history narrated by the art of modern times. The convergence of inspiration and art forms the key sounding board on which Kuwait Calling was created on. The site-specific masterpiece is the result of a trailblazing collaboration between JACC and a London-based team from 59 Productions, Tony and Olivier Award-winning creatives that have worked with the Kuwaiti cultural powerhouse in the past. Additionally, the show features five local dancers and dancers from Rambert, one of the oldest and leading contemporary dance companies in the United Kingdom. “Imagine sitting outdoors on a beautiful night during March, facing the glimmering walls of JACC’s jeweled buildings. Suddenly the show starts with songs and melodies that are rooted in our core and run deep in our blood,” remarked Dr. Ahmad Al Salhi, the Head of Music at JACC. Together with the talented local musician and composer Yousif Yaseen, as well as British composer Paul Clark, they composed the moving 45-minute original score that parallels the visual component of the performance. “Music is the language of the soul,” added Dr. Al Salhi, “We took the songs, sounds and beats of all that is Kuwait and formed a soulstirring composition that situates the audience at the very core of what our country is made of

and what it has progressed to with this artistically experimental and ambitious collaboration.” In a dramatic dialogue between the physical body and utilizing cutting-edge technology, five Kuwaiti dancers and 12 Rambert dancers will perform a new work that includes contemporary and traditional dances choreographed by Rambert’s Artistic Director, Benoit Swan-Pouffer. The dancers will be fitted with motion-capture suits and as the narrative progresses, the live-data captured from the suits will enable the dancers to control the animated projections in real-time. “Basically, as you see the entire story unfold with projection mapping on JACC’s façade, the dancers’ movements will be reflected on the walls through motion-capture suits that literally capture the motions or movements of the dancers and project them on the walls,” explained Al Samerai. “While the story is about Kuwait, the merging of motion capture technology, projection mapping, music, dance and the architecture of the Centre’s buildings make Kuwait Calling an unmissable show that is for all ages, backgrounds and nationalities,” Alia Al Ghanim, Deputy CEO of JACC, remarked. “The team at JACC has been heavily involved in the project since the first day and to this day, we remain in awe at the unfathomable grandiosity that brings to life an almost ethereal performance of our beloved Kuwait,” Al Ghanim concluded.

Kuwait Calling will be shown at Sheikh Jaber Al Ahmad Cultural Centre on March 11 – 14, 2020. To book, please visit www.jacc-kw.com or via the app, JACC.

STAR TREK: PICARD Interview with Patrick Stewart By Chuck Barney

In Star Trek: Picard which debuted on CBS All Access Patrick Stewart reprises his iconic role as Jean-Luc Picard, a character he played for seven seasons on Star Trek: The Next Generation and in four feature films. It almost didn't happen. Stewart, who hadn't played Picard since the 2002 movie Star Trek: Nemesis, long resisted a return, believing he had completed his job as one of the franchise's most popular captains. But he changed his mind after reading a lengthy proposal put together by Berkeley author (and diehard "Trek" devotee) Michael Chabon, Alex Kurtzman and a few others. Now he's on board for a possible three-season run. (The show already has been renewed for a second season). Stewart recently appeared at the Television Critics Association press tour, where he fielded questions during a panel session. The following responses were edited for clarity and length: What was it like to step back into costume all these years later? Well, I only appear very briefly in my uniform, and this was another one of the rather presumptuous conditions that I laid down (to producers). I didn't want to wear a uniform in this, because I felt it very important that we put a lot of distance between Next Generation and what we are seeking to do here. Not ignore it, no, not at all. But so far as the character's concerned, halfway through Season 3 of Next Generation, I no longer knew where JeanLuc started and Patrick Stewart left off. We became melded, and he has never left me. So there was actually nothing that strange to be stepping into Star Trek: Picard, because he's never actually left me. He has always been there, and it's a relationship that I am absolutely thrilled to continue. Did you think you would ever play this character again? Had you gone through the process of saying good-bye for good? Oh, yes. Years ago. I was proud of the work we did on the seven years on the series and the four movies that we made. The last one maybe had less impact than the others, and that brought the franchise to a close. I was very content with that because I felt very proud of the work we had done. But the context in which the work was done, the fact that we were 108

then, as we are now, an ensemble and not a star-led series, it has been far easier than I expected to make this transition nearly 20 years later. But because, as I've said, the man exists inside me, the interesting question for me is and we talked I think for days about the backstory. What happened in those 20 years? So now I have a very, very clear vision, and little snippets of that backstory will creep into the series that I'm sure already has, because it is important that our audience get to know why we are living in the world that we are, and what it is that has brought that about. Has this role been a career burden at times? Yes. I've been honest about this. I found quite soon after we wrapped the fourth of our movies, Nemesis, that I had hung a, kind of, albatross around my neck. And this is a story I've told probably to every one of you at different times. I got an interview with a director who I was passionate to meet with because there was a role in his next movie, a small role I wanted to play. And he was very nice to me and saw me and said, "I think you do terrific work, but why would I want Jean-Luc Picard in my movie?" And that was a savage blow for quite a long time. And so I went out of my way to try to find as many diverse roles as

possible, and that was fun. ... It has taken a while for me to truly absorb the impact of this work. And being with a new ensemble you've seen already some of it, a brilliant ensemble I feel, once again, the sense of pride of being I'm not the leader, but in a sense, I'm a kind of symbol. I'm very content to be that because I think it's all about the quality of the work. Why do you think "Star Trek" has endured as a franchise for all these years? Hope. It is the dominant emotion behind everything that we did on Next Generation and, as I'm beginning to discover, on Picard too. It has always been part of the content of "Star Trek" that it will be attempting to create a better future with the certain belief that a better future is possible if the right kind of work and the right kind of people are engaged in that. And my feeling was, as I look all around our world today, there has never been a more important moment when entertainment and show business can address some of the issues that are potentially damaging our world today. Now, I'm not saying we are turning Star Trek into a political show, not remotely. What we are making is entertainment, but that it should reflect perhaps in a subtle and gentle way the world that we are living in, is what Star Trek has always done, and I think it's important.

YOU’RE BORED

When everything feels a little bit dull, follow these tips to get a little more excitement out of your life. By Tracy Brower

My mom used to call boredom the “b-word.” If I wanted to make her hopping mad (which I usually didn’t), all I had to do was say I was bored. Her problem with boredom was philosophical as much as anything. If you were bored, it wasn’t because there was nothing to do. It was because you hadn’t put enough effort into keeping yourself busy. It turns out that Mom wasn’t wrong. Boredom has become trendy. Studies point to how boredom is good for creativity and innovation, as well as mental health. For example, a 2014 study published in the Creativity Research Journal found that people were more creative following the completion of a tedious task. Another piece of research published in the same year by the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology found that when people were bored, they had an increase in “associative thought”— the process of making new connections between ideas, which is linked to innovative thinking. These studies are impressive, but in reality, the benefits of boredom may be related to having time to clear your mind, be quiet, or daydream. THE TRUTH ABOUT BOREDOM The truth is, pure boredom isn’t pleasant. One study published in Science found that participants (67% of men and 25% of women) chose to administer an electric shock to themselves rather than to sit and think quietly for 6 to 15 minutes. In addition, a Washington State University study shows boredom is on the rise, especially in adolescent girls. This is a problem, since boredom can have negative consequences that lead to everything from overeating to issues with drugs, drinking, or gambling. In our stimulation-rich world, it seems unrealistic that boredom could occur at all. Yet, there are legitimate reasons boredom may feel so painful. As it turns out, boredom might signal the fact that you have a need that isn’t being met. BOREDOM CAN POINT TO A NEED FOR MORE CONNECTIONS Our always-on world of social media may result in more connections, but they are superficial and can get in the way of building a real sense of belonging. Feeling bored may signal the desire for a greater sense of community and the feeling that you fit in with others around you. So take the step of joining a club, organization, or association to build face-to-face relationships

110

and create new friendships. You’ll find depth that you won’t get from your screen no matter how many likes you get on your post. BOREDOM CAN POINT TO A NEED TO CONTRIBUTE Similar to the need for belonging, bored people often report that they feel a limited sense of meaning. It’s a fundamental human need to have a larger purpose and to feel like we’re part of something bigger than ourselves. A 2007 University of Mississippi study found that when people are bored, they’re more likely to feel less meaning in their lives and vice versa. Conversely, a 2016 study by the University of Southampton found that when people volunteered, their happiness increased. If you want to reduce boredom and increase your sense of meaning, seek work that matters to you where you can make a unique contribution, or find a cause you can support with your time and talents. BOREDOM CAN SUGGEST THAT YOU NEED MORE CHALLENGE IN YOUR LIFE People have varying needs for stimulation and adrenaline rushes, but in general, boredom may be a signal that you need to push yourself a bit. This could be a stretch at work or in your leisure activities. After all, happiness is correlated with being challenged and developing new skills, and scrolling through your social media accounts doesn’t meet this requirement. So find opportunities to try new things, whether it’s skydiving, taking on a tough project at work, or starting a hobby that provides a fun outlet.

BOREDOM MAY SUGGEST YOU NEED MORE DIVERSITY One of the aspects of boredom is feeling like things are the same from day to day and week to week. Some predictability is good for mental health, but you may also need some variety in your life. Invite people of different backgrounds into your friend group, join the unexpected interest group at work, or read more widely on unusual topics. The key is to broaden your perspective and change what you’re exposed to regularly. BOREDOM MAY SIGNAL THE NEED FOR DEPTH In The Shallows: What the Internet Is Doing to Our Brains, journalist Nicholas Carr makes a strong case for the ways our brains have been rewired to glaze the surface of things, rather than to go deep. But the ability to have more depth, process deeply, and get into flow are hallmarks of empathy, connectedness, and happiness. Find a project that you can lose yourself in, because it’s so exciting, or set aside time to solve a thorny problem. These kinds of deep thinking can go far in alleviating boredom. If your definition of boredom is being quiet, mindful, and meditative, keep it up. But if you’re wrestling with real boredom and the emptiness it provokes, consider whether you might seek new connections, more meaning, more significant challenges, diversity of experiences, or more depth in your efforts. These are the things that will genuinely alleviate boredom and make you more effective in the process. Photo by Juan Gomez on Unsplash.

THESE FIVE POPULAR PRODUCTIVITY TOOLS HAVE HIDDEN RISKS

Before you download any of these supposedly revolutionary timesaving apps, you might want to read this. By Christopher Zara

Whether you’re starting out on a new career path, undertaking a big project, or tackling some other challenge, having a plan can be a good thing. You may think through potential obstacles and opportunities, as well as the steps and resources you’ll need to get the job done. SMART SPEAKERS Launched: 2014–2016 Reach: An estimated 66 million Amazon Echo, Google Home, and Apple HomePod units were in use in the U.S. at the end of 2018. The promise: Voice assistants have been lauded for their ability to make you more productive at home or work, letting you do everything from scheduling calendar appointments and reminders to setting distraction-busting timers. The peril: There have been at least three reports of people from Amazon, Apple, and Google listening to bits of captured audio for the sake of quality control. Also, law enforcement could ask all three firms for voice-recording data to help solve crimes. (The companies say they comply when required to through a subpoena or search warrant.) APPLE WALKIE-TALKIE Launched: 2018 on Apple Watch Reach: An estimated 22.5 million units shipped last year. The promise: The Walkie-Talkie app for Apple Watch serves as a lo-fi alternative to texts, Slack messages, DMs, or (God forbid) face-to-face chats. Just enter your contacts and get the conversation started. The peril: Apple was temporarily forced to disable Walkie-Talkie in July 2019 after a bug was revealed that could have let eavesdroppers listen in on people’s conversations. Apple pushed out a fix, but if the idea of snoopers gives you the creeps, an app where you talk out loud to friends might give you pause anyway. DROPBOX Launched: 2008; updated in 2019 Reach: 13.6 million paying users as of mid-2019. The promise: After years of operating in your computer’s background, quietly syncing your data and letting you store and share files in a personal cloud, Dropbox has an app of its own, which can integrate with G Suite, Slack, and Zoom. The peril: Dropbox was criticized by NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden for lax encryption. The new Dropbox forces users to allow themselves to be tracked across the web if they want to use its Google Docs integration. Plus, a security engineer discovered that sharing a Dropbox Paper doc publicly allows anyone to see the email of anyone who has ever opened the file.

SUPERHUMAN Launched: TBD. It’s currently an invitation-only app Reach: A waiting list of 245,000. The promise: For $30 a month, users get a sleek email service that offers data from LinkedIn and other platforms about the people you email, an “unsend” feature, info on when your message was read, and “the fastest email experience ever made.” The peril: The service not only told users when a recipient opened an email but also the recipient’s approximate location at the time he or she opened it. Although Superhuman turned off location tracking, it still enabled users to surveil how recipients interacted with messages, without the recipient’s consent. ZOOM Launched: 2011

Reach: 66,300 enterprise customers that have more than ten full-time employees. The promise: Zoom is today’s go-to videoconferencing platform and a lifeline for remote workers, requiring just an email address to sign up. Best of all, the app is free for group calls under 40 minutes, which helps keep meetings efficient. The peril: In July, a security flaw was reported in Zoom for Mac: Attackers could hijack people’s webcams by tricking users into clicking a meeting link they sent. (What makes Zoom so easy to use is that each meeting gets its own URL.) It was also found that Zoom installed a web server on users’ computers, creating a security risk. 3 WAYS YOU’RE MESSING UP YOUR ELEVATOR PITCH

And how to fix it By Sara Anna Powers

“Hi! My name is Sara Anna Powers, and I help online business owners create magnetic messaging so they can attract quality leads and make consistent sales.” Not a bad elevator pitch, huh? It got me mentioned on a top-rated business podcast after I used it at a lunch with industry leaders. Unfortunately, when we have just 10 seconds to explain what we do to a stranger, many of us choke. We shrug our shoulders, cast our eyes down, and mumble something extremely humble (and possibly inaudible) about what we spend most of our days doing. And that leads to a missed opportunity for a sale, referral, or future job. As an online business mentor and messaging expert, I’ve written copy that’s helped my clients make millions of dollars. Words are powerful, and making a few simple tweaks to your elevator pitch can ensure that your 10 seconds don’t turn into a missed opportunity. If you’re struggling to generate leads despite spending all your time networking, you might be making one of the following mistakes. Mistake No. 1: Your pitch is too vague If your pitch includes phrases like “I help women” or “I serve people” without specifying what kind of women or which type of people you support, it’s not likely to land. Instead of generic statements, use power adjectives for extra oomph. Changing “I help women” to “I help ambitious women negotiate an outstanding offer package at any new job” instantly adds a hit of clarity to your pitch. You’re calling out your dream client, and she’ll respond accordingly. Rather than saying “I serve people,” switch to “I serve motivated people who are ready to change careers” and notice how the clients you’ll start attracting are the ones who’ll actually do the work. Mistake No. 2: You focus on who you are instead of how you can help your clients One of the most glaring mistakes in the way many people craft their elevator pitch is that they focus on who they are instead of how they can help their clients. Remember that your potential client or customer only cares about you to the extent that you can help him achieve his goals. So, rather than talking about your advanced degrees or professional experience in your pitch, focus on sharing how your work will move your client toward the desired result. Rather than listing your qualifications, use power verbs in your pitch. This helps prospects quickly grasp how hiring you can benefit them. Note the contrast between the compelling pitch “I propel ambitious women toward their goal of creating a 116

profitable online business” and the lackluster “I’m an expert in helping people make money online.” The second phrase feels like an infomercial, but the first one states who you’re specifically going to help, and what you’re going to help them do. Try using power verbs such as “propel,” “create,” “jumpstart,” and “drive” in your next pitch to demonstrate your ability to get results for your clients. Mistake No. 3: Your pitch is too long When meeting a new business contact, say what you need to say, and then stop talking. You don’t want to be that person that people wish would take an early cab home. You want to be the person who leaves the party with others longing to know more. One of the fastest ways to build solid working relationships is to become an expert listener, and you can’t do that if you’re droning on about your résumé and business

accolades for five full minutes. The best elevator pitches are succinct. They share your name, who you help (with specificity, of course), how you help, and why that matters. You can do all of this in a simple sentence like “I’m Mary, and I help aspiring speakers land paid speaking gigs so they can share their powerful message while also earning a living.” When you get specific on who you help, use power verbs to describe how you help them, and keep your pitch short and sweet, you’ll be in a better position to make a positive impact on new business contacts. Practice your elevator pitch until you can say it seamlessly. That way, the next time someone asks, “What do you do?” you’ll be ready to seize the opportunity.

NON-TRADITIONAL GIFTS FOR YOUR MOMMA She gave you life, so you owe her a great gift from X-cite! By bazaar staff

Mother’s Day gifts are overrated, actually Mother’s Day can be as well. Loving our mothers should go beyond a single day of the year. Mama should be loved and celebrated every day, even when they are less than perfect because guess what, they are human too. If you are trying to squeeze your brains for a cliché gift like a rose or a teddy bear but can’t seem to decide, don’t worry we’ve thought of way more creative things you can purchase. No offense, your ideas of the perfect gift exist… somewhere but, let’s actually get her a gift she will use. And by use, we don’t mean posting about it on social media and tagging you, but actually getting it out of the box and remembering you every time she uses it. We’ve compiled a list of gifts you can get your wonderful birth giver from X-cite to give her the gift of self-care and self-discovery.

She spends her entire life worrying about your well-being, and now it’s your turn to give back! Give your mother the gift of self-care with these products below:

This specific diffuser is dual function and also works as a humidifier that reduces viruses and bacteria.

Masters Profession Make-Up Portable Station Makeup is art and experimenting with it is such a creative process that makes a woman feel beautiful. Let her care for herself by giving her the space to practice the art of makeup and feel like a superstar with a complementing chair.

Spoil your mom with an at home full body massaging chair from X-cite with a back-heating function. If a chair is too much of a commitment, help her relax with a simple foot massager which can also be purchased.

NICOLAS CAGE ON METEORITES, ALPACAS

And what he thinks about the existence of aliens By Bryan Alexander

Nicolas Cage has never been more domesticated onscreen than as sweater-wearing Nathan Gardner — loving husband, father of two, Volvo driver and alpaca farmer — in Color Out of Space. That doesn’t last long. Gardner’s disposition drastically changes in the Richard Stanley-directed sci-fi horror film (in theaters Friday) after a meteorite lands in the front yard, leading to tragic consequences. Especially for those alpacas (come on, you saw that coming). Eccentric Oscar winner Cage, 56, spoke to USA Today about his foray into horror, the prospects for alien visitation and what to do when meteorites land in your yard. You start out so normal in Color Out of Space and then end up Shining crazy. What happened? We’re combining a family drama with some pretty terrible stuff in the horror genre. Those are two genres I really like, and there’s this collision between the two. The producers asked, ‘What’s your favorite genre?’ I love ordinary people. They said, ‘If you love ordinary people, have we got a script for you.’ They sent me this family drama that transmogrifies into a nightmare horror film. And I loved it. Does the concept of alien visitation fill you with hope or dread? It’s certainly worth noting that arguably the smartest man of the last century, Stephen Hawking, said we shouldn’t make contact with alien life because it most likely will be dangerous. But for me, I think it would be very exciting. I remember once I met Carl Sagan at dinner a million years ago, I must have been 10. It was at my uncle’s (Francis Ford Coppola) house, I think while he was directing “The Godfather: Part II.” I didn’t know who Carl Sagan was, but I found out he was a scientist of the universe. And I asked him if he believed in life in outer space. He said, ‘Absolutely, but I don’t believe they’ll come down here in flying saucers, But I think they’re out there.’ ” Color Out of Space makes a clear case for proper, immediate meteorite disposal. Have you given this thought? I was very lucky. At one time, I actually owned a slab of a Martian meteorite. It was actually quite famous because people thought there were microbes in it that may connote life and then that (theory) had been debunked. It’s probably worth a fortune now. But, sadly, I think it was stolen from my house. There was a time when things were getting stolen from my properties, and that one went.

120

But I would be thrilled if a meteorite landed in my backyard. To know I have something from the Milky Way or somewhere in the universe is very exciting. It’s not something that is entirely unlikely, either. I mean, there are meteorites constantly landing. Camels can be difficult co-stars. How were the alpacas? The alpacas were actually very sweet, gentle animals, not nasty at all, with beautiful eyes. They do have a kind of a comical appearance. It’s hard not to laugh when you’re looking at them, and the word “alpaca” is kind of funny. I enjoy the word alpaca. Sometimes camels get angry and they hiss sort of, and the llama can spit at you. But the alpaca was quite nice. In Color Out of Space, you lose it in your Volvo. I was worried you might have injured yourself hitting the ceiling of a solid car. Did you?

It’s an opportunity that I look for in movies, ever since I saw Jack Nicholson in Five Easy Pieces and he kind of loses it and really freaks out. I put that in the movie I directed, Sonny, with James Franco. I told him, you’re alone, and you’ve got to lose it, just throw your body into it. Whenever I get a chance to do that, I go for it. But I didn’t hurt myself. I try to be careful with the choreography of a performance. It’s like a controlled state of being out of control. Anything goes in this moment, and let it rip. Kesha made it clear on Twitter that she’s a major fan and hit up the Color premiere in Los Angeles to meet you. What was that like? Kesha is a great lady, and we had a lot of fun. I’ve always admired Kesha for the music, she’s incredibly talented. I was happy to meet her, and she was interested in the movie. So it was a nice time.

DETANGLE YOUR LIFE The secret is in the Tangle Teezer teeth; the 3-step solution to your hair problems By bazaar staff

122

Our hair is our crowning joy and glory. Whether we love it or not depends on if we have learned how to properly care for and style it. By the time we have made it to adulthood, most of us will have experimented with different tools, products, hairstyles and questionable practices on our road to perfect tresses.

It all starts with finding the right hairbrush. The versatile tool does more than just detangles your hair. According to the research house Radiant Insights, the hairbrush market is projected to reach USD 1.3 billion by 2022. We’re pretty sure we have contributed to that shocking number by trying out dozens of hairbrushes before settling on the Tangle Teezer family of brushes and the 3-step solution. In 2007, Shaun P launched The Original Tangle Teezer, a brush that quickly detangles hair without tugging or pulling which minimizes breakage or weakening. By then Shaun had already spent three decades working in salons as a colorist so he had firsthand knowledge and experience. Years of research, design, development and refinement led to the invention of the genius “teeth” on the brushes that have become their patented trademark. Making the two-tiered flexible teeth design transformed the brushing and grooming experience. Instead of pulling on the tangles and knots to undo themselves, the Tangle Teezer gently coaxes the hair. If you have ever tried to untie a difficult knot you will have noticed that force is counter-productive. STEP 1: Detangling First, you need the right foundation. And with hair that means clean and knot free. The very first Tangle Teezer creation, The Original, can be used on wet or dry hair and is suitable for all hair types and textures, it is even safe for hair extensions. The long teeth detangle and the short teeth smooth the hair cuticle for healthier-looking, glossy hair. Since its inception, the brand has released many versions that work for all ages, hair textures and needs. The Original Mini has saved many a parentchild relationship. “Ouch you’re hurting me,” is something any parent doesn’t want to hear especially when they are only trying to brush their child’s hair. They come in fun colors that kids love, with some special collections that also contain stickers so they can be customized. The Wet Detangler was specifically designed for wet hair and can be a parent’s best weapon to detangle their kids’ hair while they are occupied with their tub splashing. And we love it as adults too! The Original has always been loved and lauded by people of all hair types, but the specially designed Thick & Curly brush is especially loved by people who dream of beautiful, healthy curls. The brush can be used on wet hair to promote the clumping that keeps your curls beautiful and well-defined. The Thick & Curly brush can also be used on dry hair too and was adapted to be easily used on thicker, curlier hair. The teeth on the Thick & Curly brush are stronger and 4mm longer, but still with plenty of flex. There are three different levels of flex; regular, soft and firm. Soft flex works better with finer more delicate hair, which are found on the Fine & Fragile Tangle Teezer. This brush is especially useful for people who are worried about hair loss. Finally, the Firm teeth are fantastic for more stubborn kinks and curls.

STEP 2: Blow-Drying After detangling, go ahead and start drying your hair with the amazing Blow-Styling Smoothing Tool that will take you from wet to dry, quickly and gently, leaving your hair with naturally smooth volume. The innovative teeth technology delivers free flow tension which allows for less pulling and tugging. The bottle shaped teeth take off excess water for a quicker blow-dry, so you won’t have to use too much heat. For natural bounce and volume use The Round Tool. It is as easy as it sounds. Just make sure to section off your hair first and place the brush into the roots of the hair. Draw the brush through while your hairdryer follows the motion. STEP 3: Styling You might think you are done and don’t need this extra step but this is where the real magic happens. The Ultimate Finisher catches every strand of hair if you are sweeping it up into a ponytail or top knot. The long teeth and softer tips help blend hair extensions with your own hair if you have any. If you are going for a fancy updo, reach for your Back Combing Hairbrush. You want your hair to go high but don’t want any ratting or matting. The two-tiered teeth compact the hair instead of ratting it and will add volume to your hair. It makes it easier to brush the style out too. OPTIONAL STEP 4: Compact for on-the-go fixups Every addition to the line has been a game-changer but none like the Compact Styler. The handbag and purse friendly hairbrush provides the perfect finishing touch when on-the-go. And it comes with a sleek cover that keeps the brush teeth clean and safe from being crushed in your bag. No handbag should be without the Compact Styler. You might need to do all of the steps every day but you definitely need to keep one of these so you can look great no matter where you are. All of the hairbrushes are designed and manufactured in Great Britain. From the design team in London to the factory in Oxfordshire, every element of the Tangle Teezer journey is completed on British soil. However, that doesn’t mean that the hairbrushes stay in the country for long! Of the twenty hairbrushes that are sold every minute, seventeen of them are exported to more than 70 countries around the world. The research team has made sure that they work for all hair types and textures. What are you waiting for? Get that perfect hairstyle without the stress of detangling.

You can find Tangle Teezer products in Toni & Guy, Vavavoom, Debenhams, Boots, Xcite Alghanim, Bloomingdale's, Alhajri Pharmacies, Mishref Coop Pharmacy, Ali Abdulwahab Almutawa Pharmacies, Saveco. and on Carriage and Boutiqaat apps. SIX WAYS TO STOP OVERTHINKING

If overthinking is getting in the way of getting things done, try these tactics to get unstuck. By Gwen Moran

Whether you’re starting out on a new career path, undertaking a big project, or tackling some other challenge, having a plan can be a good thing. You may think through potential obstacles and opportunities, as well as the steps and resources you’ll need to get the job done. But there’s a line between thorough planning and overthinking. When we slip into the latter, it can immobilize us, also known as “analysis paralysis.” Nate Page, a psychologist and counselor at Carleton College says overthinking usually falls into two categories: dwelling on the past, which is usually called rumination, or about the future, which is usually just referred to as worrying. When fears from the past or concerns about the future crop up, they can hold you back from accomplishing what you want or need to do. But, they can also have detrimental effects on your mental and physical well-being. Stress from worry can have wide-ranging physical effects. A study published in October 2019 in Nature suggests that excessive activity in the brain is linked to shorter life spans. If your feelings or concerns are interfering with your sleep, your daily functioning, or your ability to focus on work or school, it’s time to act. Here are some steps you can try: 1. SET ASIDE TIME TO WORRY As part of the cognitive behavioral therapy she practices, Skolnick will sometimes encourage her clients to schedule time to worry. That allows them to devote time where they can focus on their concerns, observing them or writing them down. Such a practice may offer relief from the effort of trying to quiet them. The practice can help you be able to “Redirect your attention and focus on whatever it is you need to focus on,” she says. 2. EXAMINE YOUR PREDICTIONS Giving yourself the time and space to identify your worries can also help you examine the predictions you’re making, Skolnick says. “Often, worry thoughts are predictions that something’s going to happen,” she says. When you define exactly what it is that’s bothering you, it’s possible to more easily look at the best- and worst-case scenarios and how you would handle them. “You’re taking a step back and evaluating yourself rather than just going with the thoughts,” she says. 3. GET COMFORTABLE WITH DISCOMFORT Page tends to have an emotion-focused perspective on the matter. “I’m more curious about what is going on underneath the thoughts. And at least in my experience, when it comes to rumination or worrying about the future, usually we’re trying to protect ourselves from vulnerability,” he says. In many cases, people stuck in analysis or overthinking are

128

trying to avoid unpleasant feelings. But that’s a false sense of control. Instead, he encourages people to strengthen their ability to manage uncomfortable situations. “I encourage people to, for example, take improv classes because that’s one of the best things to be able to practice stepping into the vulnerability, letting go of the prediction, the control, the worrying,” he says. He has seen a number of people shift from being able to tolerate uncomfortable situations to actually enjoying them. 4. REDIRECT Anyone who’s ever been stuck in the quicksand of overthinking knows that it’s often an exercise in treading the same ground over and over again. That’s not helpful, and acknowledging it can be a good first step to changing those thoughts, says psychologist Annie Varvaryan. If you find yourself stuck in worry, redirect your thoughts. What would be a helpful step for you to take to help calm your concerns? Can you find a way to calm the concerns you have? “By really redirecting yourself back to something that’s going to be actually helpful, you’re still going to feel like you’re in control of it,” she says. “But you’re going to do something that’s going to be more productive and more effective for you moving forward rather than just something that’s eating up your time.”

5. WRITE Free writing and journaling can be powerful tools and create some “distance” from your thoughts, Skolnick says. “It gives you a chance to take a step back and look at what you’re thinking about instead of just kind of going through it in your mind,” she says. A 2017 study published in Psychophysiology found that expressive writing reduced error-related negativity in people with anxiety. 6. PHONE A FRIEND Finding a sounding board can help too. Identify trusted mentors, friends, or colleagues who can act as accountability partners, Varvaryan suggests. “Having an accountability person that we can run these things by—somebody that we trust—can really help us put things into perspective,” she says. Use your support system to help you identify when you’re stuck in this type of thinking and give you feedback that can help calm you or redirect your thinking. Chronic worry and overthinking are also correlated with depression and anxiety, Page says. If these issues are not addressed, they can grow more severe. So, if chronic worry and overthinking are getting in the way of your ability to function, it’s a good idea to speak to a physician or mental-healthcare practitioner. A MATCH MADE AT SINTOHO The top five dishes with their perfectly-paired mocktail By bazaar staff

Sintoho has killer views, and a lively ambience you cannot miss out on. Located in the Four Seasons Hotel Kuwait, it overlooks a gorgeous view of Kuwait City. Your surroundings ensure your delicious meal can be enjoyed in a luminous setting. A modern Far East feast of its own, Sintoho’s meals are uniquely tasting and considerably in a class of its own. 130

Although choosing a favorite dish from Sintoho is a weighty decision and is not one to be taken lightly, rest assured that you won’t be disappointed. Better yet, why don’t you let us help? We have taken on the initiative and listed below the top five dishes we love to eat at Sintoho and we’ve even found the perfect mocktails to complete your meal! First off is the Yellowfin Tuna, which happens to be a fan favorite. Delicately flavored with creamy tartar and plated with a side of crispy rice and passion fruit salsa, it is sure to make your taste buds come to life! The next item is the Stone Pot Cooked Rice. This experience is a semi interactive one, where your plate is delivered to you in a stone pot on a serving trolley. Stir fried rice, shiitake mushrooms, yellow chives, Chinese cabbage, bok choi and morning glory are placed in concrete stone bowls by the pot and mixed into the rice. For the final product, your choice of Chilean seabass or slow cooked Wagyu beef ribs is also stirred in. For the meat lovers, you will love this third dish. Called the Tajima bone in Japanese cross-bred wagyu +7 tomahawk, it is a special steak with the bone in. This serving is great for two guests and can best be paired with one of their delicious mocktails. We recommend pairing this with Tokyo Nights, which is a luscious mixture of cranberry, ginger and yuzu juice with maraschino cherries, peach and sweet basil seeds. When Trufflin’ deliciousness is involved, the Mushroom and Truffle Dim Sum comes in. Aesthetically pleasing and vividly delicious, this plate contains wild mushrooms, truffle paste and fresh black truffle shavings. The Tandoori-style chicken tender bao’s called the Active Charcoal Bao is served with a Kachumber salad, lime wedges and organic raita. This synergy of flavors compliments the Senasia mocktail perfectly. The Senasia is a divine combination of mango juice, coconut milk, pandan syrup and passion fruit. The large deep-sea cardinal prawn is offered on the menu at Sintoho as well, and is by far one of the best seafood options! The Red Prawns dish contains [Continued...]

carabineros shrimps, which are cooked to perfection and coated with togarashi (a Japanese spice mixture) and pepper salsa. Always saving the best for last, our chosen Sintoho dessert option is quite the delicacy with 100% vegan flavors. The Galangal Ginger Soy Milk Ice Cream is made with dairy-free galangal-ginger ice cream and sits beautifully on almond sponge cake and some raspberries. With that, grabbing an order of the Pearl of Orient drink makes for the perfect finale. Enjoy your mocktail that is a light blend of pineapple juice, coconut milk, yuzu Juice, pandan syrup and homemade coconut candy that is delicately placed in the glass.

TAKE THE GEROLSTEINER CHALLENGE 12 things you can do for a better life By bazaar staff

We can all agree that we could benefit from some changes in our life. It might be better sleeping habits or drinking more water. But whatever it is that you might be trying to actively improve, you will have probably hit that invisible but not exactly imaginary wall of defeat. Our friends at Gerolsteiner have provided us with just the right amount of motivation to help us fine tune our lives. Say hello to the Gerolsteiner Challenge! Embrace twelve different things that you can do which can improve your day right now, or your life if you turn them into a habit. There are three themes; balance, fitness and nutrition. You can think of balance as the mental wellness component of the challenge. Challenges like these can be an effective strategy for a quick fix or long-term habit formation. 134

Because the suggestions are simple and flexible you can do them in a way that aligns with your personal goals instead of working towards something that might not be important to you. And if you stick to it and set realistic expectations, we are sure that you will be knocking them out of the park soon enough. You can even tackle the challenge in the time frame that suits you best. Pick one task for the month and make it the theme. For example, you could choose to declutter your life, not just your wardrobe. Make time every weekend for an entire month to clean out different areas in your home. And why stop there? Clean out your social media, unfollow negative accounts and maybe add in some happy-go-lucky people that make you feel better about the world. If you prefer a more short-term approach you can do one task each day and be done in 12 days and then repeat the cycle until it all becomes a habit. Everything in moderation, is a motto we try to live by at bazaar, so we are going to do it over a month. Each week we will be working on one balance, fitness and nutrition goal. This way, we have enough time to

cement the new habits because of the repetition. We are also trying to do this collectively in the office, so we are accountable to each other and have our own built-in support system. We understand that this is a process and that we will have to keep working on it, just because you checked a task off the challenge list doesn’t mean you are set for life. It just means that now you know you can do it and how it can be done. So just keep at it! Sharing is caring, tell a friend or a family member and ask them to join you. Set up reminders on your phone so that you don’t forget. Tear out the page and hang it up on your wall or in your office cubicle. You need to take care of yourself before you are forced to take a break. For more information, follow Gerolsteiner on Instagram @gerolsteiner_arabia. 13 WAYS TO WASTE LESS TIME AT WORK

Rather than wish there were more hours in a day, do these things instead. By Natasha Vorompiova

I don’t wish I had more time. Now don’t get me wrong—I don’t always follow my own advice. (Don’t we all know what we should do, yet sometimes choose not to do it?) When that happens, I push back due dates or apologize for getting to someone after a delay. In those moments, I wonder if things would be different if I had more time. But deep down, I know that having more time wouldn’t solve the problem. Because if I mismanage the time I already have, having more time means I’ll have more time to mismanage. Having more time doesn’t necessarily result in accomplishing more. However, here are some ways you can regain time in 2020. TAME YOUR INBOX Reduce time searching your inbox. To stop wasting time sifting through your inbox, move all projectrelated conversations into your project management tool. Asana, Trello, TeamworkPM, and Wrike are great examples of such tools. They allow you to organize your conversations by specific projects and tasks, and their search function enables you to find a particular conversation instantly. Automate scheduling. You’re wasting time whenever you email back and forth with clients trying to come up with a day and time to meet. Online schedulers offer a clear-cut process for you and your clients, which will save you time, help you avoid double-booking disasters, and keep you looking professional. You can pick an online scheduler from a plethora of options— AcuityScheduling, ScheduleOnce, and Calendly, to name a few. Create and share guidelines. Instead of answering emails faster, try to eliminate any emails that shouldn’t be coming into your inbox in the first place. For example, to stop spending time answering emails about how someone can be featured on your blog or podcast, put together a page that walks them through established guidelines. Use forms to collect information. To end back-and-forth messages with your clients requesting information or assets throughout the project, create a form that asks for everything that you need all at once when you first begin working with them. 5. Switch off notifications. Social media notifications can quickly and needlessly fill up your inbox. They not only clutter your inbox but also distract you from tasks at hand. Don’t allow social media to hijack your time. You can always set aside time to check your social media channels to catch up. WORK SMARTER Declare war on distractions. Nothing eats up more of your time than distractions. Get rid of them one by one. First, create a log of your distraction triggers. Next,

136

go down the list and address each one of them. For example, if you get distracted by the alerts your phone makes when you get a new message, put it on silent. Don’t use your inbox as your to-do list. When you do this, you let other people dictate how you should spend your time. Instead, use one of the project or task management tools to keep track of your tasks. Forward the emails that require action into your assignment or project management and automatically turn them into tasks. End task switching. Instead of switching between tasks, batch them. Batching allows you to save time because you are not wasting it jumping from task to task. Once you’re clear on your task list, you can easily see what you can batch together. For example, you can batch writing blog posts, recording video or audio content, create social media updates, follow up with your potential clients, or send out invoices. Double-task instead of multitasking. Multitasking slows you down because you’re interrupting your focus and productivity by switching from one task to another. When you’re double-tasking, you engage in two different types of activity at once—for instance, a mental and a physical one, such as listening to a podcast while working out. Double-tasking helps you slash in half the time it would take to perform two different tasks individually. Do the last 5%. It’s very tempting to skip tasks such as correctly labeling a document or testing the link that you’re about to share. But stop yourself and take a minute to complete the job properly. You’ll save hours of your precious time for a year.

PUT TECHNOLOGY TO USE Speed-write emails. No matter how many emails you eliminate, there will always be emails to answer. Save time composing the same messages or paragraphs by using Gmail features such as Canned Responses or adopting tools such as Text Expander (for Mac). They allow you to instantly use prewritten copy by inserting a template or hitting a key that expands into a phrase or paragraph. Record your answers. This shortcut comes in especially handy when you need to give feedback or explanation. This is also a fantastic way to demonstrate how you do something, such as upload and format a blog post, research a topic, or set up an event. Such tools as Loom, Screencast, and Jing are perfect for that. Save time on follow-up. It can be time-consuming to nurture relationships with your strategic partners, vendors, and clients. But when you automate some aspects of fostering relationships, you can save quite a bit of time. It can be as simple as scheduling emails wishing your top contacts happy birthday, congratulating them on a business anniversary, or suggesting that you schedule a catch-up call (where you give them a link to your online scheduler). Working simply and efficiently means getting more work done. That’s why how you do things daily needs to have a purpose. By using the time you have intentionally and wisely, you can accomplish much more than what your time usually allows. Photo by Alvaro Reyes on Unsplash.

MASTERFUL MISE EN PLACE

A look behind the scenes at The Cheesecake Factory By bazaar staff

We’ve been lucky to have been invited to several kitchens all over Kuwait to see what it really looks like to prepare and create some of the tastiest dishes in the country. We always appreciate the hard work, dedication and thought that has been put into running a restaurant. Yet, The Cheesecake Factory takes it to a totally new level. We arrived at the waterfront location on Kuwait’s Gulf Road on a beautiful Sunday morning before opening hours. The kitchen staff had already been working for a couple of hours prepping things for the day. The menu at The Cheesecake Factory has more than 200 items, and they use more than 1400 recipes to make them. You might assume that a lot of the items are premade at The Cheesecake Factory, but in reality, everything is made from scratch, with the exception of the cheesecakes. The recipes for those fluffy sweet delights are a secret and there are only two factories (yes, they are real) in the US that produce them all for all the worldwide locations. Oh, what we would do, to be able to visit that! William Zito, the Area Kitchen Operations Manager, who is probably the best person to show you around the kitchen, welcomed us into his kingdom. He has been with The Cheesecake Factory since 1996 and not only understands how things work, he also believes in their mission and vision. He explained that every morning, the staff starts chopping vegetables, making sauces and salad dressings that will be used throughout the day. Everything is stored and labeled using a tamper-proof system so that they know if they need to make more. We donned chef’s coats, aprons and the unflattering but absolutely mandatory hairnets before we were allowed to step into the kitchen. After washing our hands, we were invited in for our sneak peek. There’s a vibe of productivity, efficiency and precision that you immediately feel. The atmosphere is friendly but very fast-paced. There is no time to waste, but everyone is smiling. The first item on our tour was the Avocado Eggrolls. The avocados 138

are flown in from Mexico to make sure they are always fresh, ripe and tasty. The sun-dried tomatoes are made in-house instead of purchased ready-made, so they are exactly the right texture for this tasty appetizer dish. There is a touch screen at every station that shows all of the recipes, including ingredients, videos, measurements and techniques. There is even a photo of the plated dish, so that it arrives at your tables exactly the way it should. Next, we watched as they made a large batch of cilantro vinaigrette dressing that is used for the Santa Fe Salad. The cilantro is hand-picked and shallots are hand chopped because after testing different ways of doing it, the team found that this method preserved flavor and taste. Shortcuts that affect a dish negatively are never taken. Anyone who has visited a Cheesecake Factory has tried the Fried Macaroni and Cheese. This is a genius comfort dish that comes in the form of crispy crumb coated macaroni and cheese balls served over a creamy marinara sauce. Fried carbs and creamy cheese are the answer to all the wrongs in the world. The process of making them however is quite detailed. First, the cheese is shredded by hand, the sauce is made and then mixed with par cooked pasta. The dish is then baked and cooled. Balls of this pasta preparation are hand scooped, dropped in a flour mixture, egg wash and then coated with the panko crumbs for that super tasty crust. Into the fryer they go for a few minutes, and then they make their way to the cheese melting oven. The chef checks the inner temperature of each ball to make sure they are perfect before plating them with the marinara sauce and sending them out to the guests. The Cheesecake Factory are masters of mise en place, which translates to putting everything in its place. In cooking, the phrase means that everything is instantly accessible, prepped and ready for immediate use. Everything is within arm’s reach for the person working. Drawers are filled with ingredients that are carefully measured and packed in the morning, so they can quickly find what they need and get your dish ready in record time. We watched one of the chefs make Louisiana Chicken Pasta. He started with an already prepped patty of herbed, spiced and seasoned butter that was made earlier that day by another cook. The mushrooms and chopped tomatoes were thrown in and then the pasta. He never needed to step away from the pan or take more than two steps. The process is incredibly lean, just what you would expect from a factory but not a kitchen. It is this detail and planning that allows the kitchen to create amazing dishes while remaining spotless, organized and relatively stress-free. And while we are sure it gets hectic during rush hours, the staff assured us that it still runs like a well-oiled machine. Everyone and everything has a place and things still go smoothly. We even got to try plating cheesecake dishes and piping whipped cream. It is fresh whipped cream made from real milk, none of that canned stuff that tastes like cardboard for us. It looks like simply squirting some caramel or chocolate sauce from a bottle, but the designs are very specific to each type of cake. Even the whipped cream. Some get two swirls, and some get one depending on your chosen flavor. Nothing is ever left to chance at The Cheesecake Factory. After the tour, we got to enjoy a sea-view table and taste everything. As always, the food was delicious, and now we understand how and why. We thought it might have been

impossible to end on a higher note than that feel-good feeling but then the cheesecake arrived. Our appreciation for The Cheesecake Factory was only deepened by this visit, so has our gratitude for the amazing people who work tirelessly and are dedicated to giving us the best meal every time we visit. It was also a reminder that if you measure twice and cut once, you will always get better results. All the planning, prepping and organizing might seem like more work, but it definitely makes the whole experience of cooking seamless and simpler than it would have otherwise been. It is a lesson that we all intend to carry into other facets of our lives. The Cheesecake Factory is located on the Waterfront on Gulf Road next to the Kuwait Towers, Grand Avenue – The Avenues, Sidra Restaurants in Mahboula. WANT TO AVOID THE SCARY CORONAVIRUS?

Wash your hands

By Elisabeth Rosenthal and Kaiser Health News

Americans are watching with alarm as a new coronavirus spreads in China and cases pop up in the United States. They are barraged with information about what kinds of masks are best to prevent viral spread. Students are handing out masks in Seattle. Masks have run out in Brazos County, Texas. Hang on. I've worked as an emergency room physician. And as a New York Times correspondent in China, I covered the SARS outbreak in 2002 and 2003 during which a novel coronavirus first detected in Guangdong sickened more than 8,000 people and killed more than 800. My two children attended elementary school in Beijing throughout the outbreak. Here are my main takeaways from that experience for ordinary people on the ground: Wash your hands frequently. Don't go to the office when you are sick. Don't send your kids to school or day care when they are ill, either. Notice I didn't say anything about masks. Having a mask with you as a precaution makes sense if you are in the midst of an outbreak, as I was when out reporting in the field during those months. But wearing it constantly is another matter. I donned a mask when visiting hospitals where SARS patients had been housed. I wore it in the markets where wild animals that were the suspected source of the outbreak were being butchered, blood droplets flying. I wore it in crowded enclosed spaces that I couldn't avoid, like airplanes and trains, as I traveled to cities involved in the outbreak, like Guangzhou and Hong Kong. You never know if the guy coughing and sneezing two rows ahead of you is ill or just has an allergy. But outdoors, infections don't spread well through the air. Those photos of people walking down streets in China wearing masks are dramatic but the subjects appear uninformed. And remember if a mask has, perchance, intercepted viruses that would have otherwise ended up in your body, then the mask is contaminated. So, in theory, to be protected maybe you should use a new one for each outing. The simple masks are better than nothing but not all that effective because they don't seal well. For anyone tempted to go out and buy the gold standard, N95 respirators, note that they are uncomfortable. Breathing is more work. It's hard to talk to people. On one long flight at the height of the outbreak, on which my few fellow passengers were mostly epidemiologists trying to solve the SARS puzzle, many of us (including me) wore our masks for the first couple of hours on the flight. Then the food and beverage carts came. Though viruses spread through droplets in the air, a bigger worry to me was always transmission 140

via what doctors call "fomites," infected items. A virus gets on a surface a shoe or a doorknob or a tissue, for example. You touch the surface and then next touch your face or rub your nose. It's a great way to acquire illness. So after walking in the animal markets, I removed my shoes carefully and did not take them into the hotel room. And, of course, I washed my hands immediately. Remember, by all indications SARS, which killed about 10% of those infected, was a deadlier virus than the new coronavirus circulating now. So keep things in perspective. In time, during the SARS outbreak, the government shut down theaters and schools in Beijing, as it is doing now in many Chinese cities because these viruses are more easily transmitted in such crowded places. The International School of Beijing, where my children were students, was one of the few in the capital perhaps the only one that stayed open throughout the SARS outbreak, though the classes were emptier, since so many kids had departed to their home countries. The school instituted a bunch of simple precautionary policies: a stern note to parents reminding them not to send a child to school who was sick and warning them that students would be

screened for fevers with ear thermometers at the school door. There was no sharing of food at lunch. The teacher led the kids in frequent hand washing throughout the day at classroom sinks, while singing a prolonged "hand washing song" to ensure they did more than a cursory pass under the faucet with water only. If a family left Beijing and came back, the child would have to stay at home for an extended period before returning to class to make sure they hadn't caught SARS elsewhere. With those precautions in place, I observed something of a public health miracle: Not only did no child get SARS, but it seemed no student was sick with anything at all for months on end. No stomach bugs. No common colds. Attendance was more or less perfect. The World Health Organization declared the SARS outbreak contained in July 2003. But, oh, that those habits persisted. The best first-line defenses against SARS or the new coronavirus or most any virus at all are the ones that Grandma and common sense taught us, after all.

CHEF’S MEZZAH When it comes to authentic Lebanese cuisine, everybody in Kuwait recommends Mais Alghanim. It has built a reputation of its own as one of the best Lebanese restaurants locally. With freshly cooked, delicious and genuine Middle Eastern food, there is just no comparison. Mais Alghanim’s menu carries all traditional, popular Middle Eastern dishes, however from time to time, new promotional items and dishes requested by clients may be added. Almost every season, there is a new release, or a year-round favorite is added to the menu. This season, they just launched the Chef’s Mezzah special menu and it is definitely something you do not want to miss. Although long-established, the restaurant keeps up with trends and market demands, the Chef’s Mezzah menu is inspired by client needs and includes many vegetarian options, and a small number of meat options. With that in mind, the regular mezzah favorites are always available to order from. Since most Middle Eastern food has earned itself a reputation in lacking to exclude meat from its food, this menu is definitely special. From salads, to cold and hot appetizers, options are varied but mostly suitable for the ones who prefer lighter, meatless options. A kale base with chopped tomatoes, onions and pomegranate is garnished with walnuts and drizzled

with olive oil and lemon juice makes up a new delicious item called the Kale Tabouleh. Another option for green lovers, is the Beetroot Tahina Salad which has a citrusy kick and tahina sauce. The cold appetizer options include two special plates, the Hindiba Bil Tahina and a Hummus Zaatar. The Hindiba dish is centered around the chicory greens with an exciting tahina flavor added. The Hummus Zaatar is really as simple as it sounds: Hummus, Thyme and Tomato Salsa centered in the plate. If you are a lover of zaatar, you will love this! Other options include a delicious Potato Kibbeh with Veggies which is 100% vegetarian. The consistency is mushy and the flavor melts right into your mouth. The Harraq Osba’o, which is a very popular dish known to be irresistible, is now added to this menu. It includes lentils, pasta, coriander, tamarind, pomegranates, fried onion and fried bread layered in a well-presented dish. The Baba Ghanouj also got an upgrade in this menu: Ghanouj & Bakleh which is now basically the same old tasty Baba Ghanouj you can get from Mais Alghanim, but with Bakleh Salad (purslane) and pomegranates on top. The hot appetizer options were full of mouthwatering platters such as the Skewered Chicken Liver and Quinoa Kibbeh. The Skewered Chicken Liver is a freshly made grilled chicken liver with grilled potatoes, bewaz (a salad mix of onions and crunchy greens, topped with sumac) and is served with a coriander garlic sauce. The Quinoa Kibbeh is quite distinctive and a definite must. Not only is it made with quinoa which is so different from the traditional kibbeh, it is stuffed also with eggplant, onion and pomegranate, and plated on a sumac labneh base. You will not believe that there is no meat in this kibbeh! Three dishes served in skillets are the Cauliflower Kozbarieh, Shrimp Beirutieh and the Falafel Tajen. The Cauliflower Kozbarieh is a mix of cauliflower, coriander, garlic and lemon Juice served on a skillet while the Shrimp Beirutieh is the Beiruti take on an appetizing shrimp dish that’s sautéed with tomato harra sauce and garnished with coriander as well. The Falafel Tajen is a bright dish which contains falafel, tahina tajen sauce, with parsley, tomato, turnip pickles and sesame seeds. If those additions are still not enough, you have these noteworthy desserts to try. Leave room for them because you will not want to leave without trying these either. The two desserts are called Apple Crack Pie and Auntie Salma’s Cake. The Apple Crack Pie is like a buttery apple pie with a thick crust while the Auntie Salma’s Cake is almost like an Arabic version of the cheesecake. If you’re a longtime fan of Mais Alghanim, or have been wanting to try it for the very first time. The new promotion is the perfect opportunity to plan that visit. Enjoy their wonderful spacious facility with a gorgeous sea view and dine in with them for stellar service and a meal you won’t forget!

APPS ARE OVERRATED. HERE’S WHEN YOU SHOULD USE AN ANALOG TOOL

Sometimes tech is not the answer By Stephanie Vozza

Technology is marvelous and it can also be a detour to the dark side. Our phones keep us connected to our friends, family and jobs but they can also disconnect us from meaningful connections. We’re constantly bombarded with notifications and feelings of #FOMO. It might seem (rightly so) inevitable but you still have the agency and power to stop technology from taking over your life. BEING DISTRACTED BY YOUR PHONE Tech solution: You can put your phone on airplane mode, but that’s easily reversed, and it doesn’t stop you from picking it up to play Solitaire mindlessly. Analog solution: Power cord. Treat your mobile phone like a landline and keep it plugged in—across the room. If you want to use it, you’ll have to get up from your desk and walk over to it, making the quick Twitter check less appealing. 144

COMPLETING LARGE LONG-TERM GOALS Tech solution: Goal-setting apps such as Strides can help you organize and track your progress, but they can also be ignored—and they don’t do anything to strengthen your willpower. Analog solution: $100 bill. “Make a pact with yourself and use a pre-commitment device,” where the consequence of doing the task is immediately rewarding, suggests Nir Eyal, author of Indistractable. For example, if you finish a report this week, you can use the $100 on a new bag. If not, it goes toward savings. CONTROLLING TIME SPENT ON EMAIL Tech solution: Apps like Batched- Inbox will hide and deliver your email at pre-designated times, but they don’t reduce the volume. You’ll just have to deal with it later. Analog solution: Email-free Fridays. If you’re a manager, consider banning email at your company one day a week to give everyone a chance to focus

on work instead of their inbox. Call or text people if you need to, or better yet, just walk over to their desks. POWERING THROUGH THE AFTERNOON SLUMP Tech solution: Web-blocking apps such as Freedom remove the temptation to web-surf, but they don’t actually help you focus and do the thing you need to complete. Analog solution: A coffee break, or even envisioning one. Research published in Consciousness and Cognition found that imagining the scent and taste of coffee enhances mental concentration. Sorry, Earl Grey fans, a virtual tea break didn’t get similar results.

ON THE ROAD TO TEXAS ROADHOUSE

COMPLETE YOUR STEAK EXPERIENCE WITH MADE-FROM-SCRATCH SIDES & FRESHLY-BAKED LEGENDARY ROLLS By bazaar staff

Taking a walk through a Texas Roadhouse location, regardless of where you are in the world, teleports you straight to Texas. You hear the country music, you see the rustic style interiors with wall hangings and through taste you are taken to the best steak house, deep in the heart of Texas. Whether you’re going in for a full course meal, or a lighter option, Texas Roadhouse’s bread is to die for. That may seem a bit high-key, but their unique, proprietary blend is fluffy, delicious and always fresh. Their secret blend is shipped directly from the US, and baked to perfection locally. Texas Roadhouse always has fresh bread to serve. Can you imagine that their famous bread rolls are freshly made every five minutes? And of course, we are not forgetting the heavenly whipped butter served by its side. The butter served is a gorgeous mixture of honey, butter and cinnamon. This bread and butter duo complements one another very well. Speaking of things that go well together, the selection of side orders for the main courses are made to excellence. Executed with precise care to deliver freshly made food, they are a staple of Texas

146

Roadhouse. If steak was an ice-cream sundae, the sides would be the cherry on top. When deciding what to pair your main meals with you, should be aware of the options available on the menu: Options at Texas Roadhouse range from coleslaw, to steak fries, a cup of chili or tortilla soup, house or Caesar salad, baked or mashed potato with gravy (either white or brown), buttered corn, or fresh vegetables. The thought of vegetables could potentially make some of you groan. However, Texas Roadhouse prides itself on using fresh produce, so that means nothing is thawed or frozen in your salads or seasoned vegetables. Produce is seasonally imported from different areas in the world to ensure quality and consistency. Steamed vegetables are deliciously seasoned with a lemon pepper seasoning and butter that is made in-house, so you know your veggies will not be bland at all! Quality matters and is a major reason behind the success of Texas Roadhouse. All potatoes in store (regardless of where it’s at in the world) are Idaho potatoes, shipped from Idaho, USA. These potatoes make for a perfect choice since they are fluffy and soft in texture. They are considered special mainly due to the nutrients in the soil they are grown in. Millions of

years ago, the area was an active volcano and since then has given Idaho potatoes their acquired taste. Taste is emphasized to stay universal, so whether you were to have the mashed potatoes in the states, in the Philippines, in Kuwait, or in any of their other locations, it would taste just as good. They’re also easily our favorite steak companion, because, what’s an awesome steak experience without the yummiest baked potato loaded up with butter, sour cream, cheese and bacon? We also love having them mashed and smothered in butter, or cheese to complete each bite of meaty goodness. Although some may argue that predictability in business is a losing battle, Texas Roadhouse prides itself on their special cooking skills and approaches that give a very distinctive experience to the guest. A journey of senses that you cannot get anywhere else! Whether snacking on peanuts from the buckets on the tables, or listening to the music playing, feeling the energy around explains why they stay on top of the steakhouse game. A process very unique to Texas Roadhouse is the way they make their bread. “It takes a few hours to make, which is why the staff will usually come in earlier to get them prepared for the day” the Head Chef shared with us. Texas Roadhouse uses a proofer,

which is a piece of equipment designed to provide the correct temperature while controlling humidity conditions. This ensures that the bread turns out fantastic, which is a necessity in their kitchens. Texas Roadhouse hasn't offered a delivery service option, because they believe in the entirety of the experience. Delivery affects that, and therefore Texas Roadhouse refuses to compromise on their standards, and that is something we admire. When delivered, the legendary foods and service is not captured. Texas Roadhouse does more than just please your taste buds. It is about families and friends coming together and enjoying a heartwarming meal with delicious staple sides that everybody loves to share (especially in this region!) From when you walk in and are seated, to smelling that divine aroma of the bread approaching your table, an irresistible tale. Nothing says “Texas like steaks, tasty sides, delightful bread and great hospitality.

Texas Roadhouse is located in Grand Avenue- The Avenues (2228 3117), Sidra Complex in Mahboula (2208 1302) and Arabian Gulf Street- Bneid Al Gar (2221 4896). For more information and for the latest updates follow @texasroadhouseme on Instagram and Facebook. 147

WATER FOR LIFE ACQUA EVA EXPLAINS THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF WATER By bazaar staff

Two molecules of Hydrogen and a molecule of Oxygen bonded together make up one of the most important compounds to all living things. Water is the source of all life and while chemically it is all identical, its source determines what else it might contain and what it tastes like. Water is your body's principal chemical component and makes up about 60 percent of your body weight. It is a necessity and not a luxury. It is how the body gets rid of waste, regulates your temperature, lubricates and cushions joints and protects your sensitive tissue. Water that is safe to drink and use for food prep is called potable water and in most of the world; tap water meets those standards. But it might still have some toxins or compounds that are not great for you and it might be missing necessary minerals in the right amounts that are beneficial for you. To maintain good health, we need to drink a lot of water. The quantity needed varies from one individual to the next. And the better that water tastes, the more likely you are to drink it. Enter purified water, which is water that has been

150

mechanically filtered or processed to remove impurities, which makes it suitable for use. Methods such as distillation, capacitive deionization, reverse osmosis, carbon filtering, microfiltration, ultrafiltration, amongst many others, are all different ways of processing. Today, combinations of these techniques produce ultrapure water. Pure water has absolutely no taste, because there is nothing in it. If you collect water from an underground source, you get Spring water. Natural spring water is free from pollutants and full of natural goodness that is a gift from the earth. If the water is collected from a mineral spring it becomes Mineral water. The various minerals, such as salts and sulfur compounds give it extra health benefits

and a more palatable taste. Mineral water may usually be still or sparkling according to the presence or absence of added gases. While we only need trace amounts of minerals, their absence from our diets can dramatically affect our health. According to healthline.com mineral water can “Contain high amounts of minerals and other naturally occurring compounds, including magnesium, calcium, bicarbonate, sodium, sulfate, chloride, and fluoride. For example, magnesium plays an essential role in regulating blood pressure, blood glucose levels, and nerve function. Calcium is necessary for building and maintaining strong bones. It also regulates the rate and rhythm of the heartbeat. And we all know that fluoride keeps our teeth healthy and strong.

Our human ancestors would travel to the source of the water to drink from it. They built baths, spas and dug wells in these locations even though they did not know why, they did know that this water was a cure for ailments and could be therapeutic. Thanks to modern manufacturing, we can now bottle the water at the source, and have it distributed for our convenient consumption wherever we live. There is another interesting type of water; artesian. It is the result of positive pressure on a confined aquifer (a geologic layer of porous and permeable material such as sand and gravel, limestone, or sandstone, through which water flows and is stored). Wells can be constructed to access the water and humans have been doing this for centuries to access this amazing source of life-giving liquid. The next time you are standing in a supermarket aisle looking at all the pretty bottles and wondering what the difference between all of them is, you can safely reach for a bottle of Acqua Eva. It is natural mineral water which is bottled at the source from an underground protected point of origin. Scientists have tested it and found it to be microbiologically pure and compositionally constant. Eva Rocce Azzurre water springs at 2,042 meters above sea level, in the heart of Monviso’s mountain district. Considered as Europe's highest natural spring, it is a pristine Alpine protected groundwater at 3.7°C, far from any human settlement or source of pollution, so it doesn’t need any chemical treatment or disinfection. And since May 2013, the area where Acqua Eva water sources are located was awarded the UNESCO's recognition of Biosphere Reserve. The low sodium water is your perfect companion all day long. You can find Acqua Eva in supermarkets, co-ops, restaurants and roomserviceq8.com. For more information and great health tips, follow @acquaevamiddleeast.

ONE LOVE ALL ACROSS KUWAIT

Our guide to the ultimate on-the-go Raising Cane’s experience By bazaar staff

Raising Cane’s has been in the K-town scene since 2015 with several unique locations throughout Kuwait each and every one of them has its own atmosphere and experience. But we especially love the quick yet fun drive thru locations when on a casual stroll on the Arabian Gulf Street or in Da’iya Co-op for a delicious meal. If you’re craving Raising Cane’s while you’re on-the-go, we’re here to help you narrow down the drive thru experience you’d like to have from these two prime locations! 154

First things first, let’s give you a little intro for those of you who still haven’t tried this incredible place. Raising Cane’s was founded in 1996 by Todd Graves in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. It is well-known for the quality chicken finger meals that are always enjoyed at more than 495 locations in the US alone. Now, in Kuwait, they’ve hit yet another milestone, as the brand has reached nine restaurants in Kuwait, and 25 restaurants spread out in the Middle East. You’ll be able to enjoy the interiors and the company of good people at Raising Cane’s on the Arabian Gulf Street. We all love driving or taking a walk on that road, enjoying the full view of the open sea, and embracing the bluest skies as the water comes through the shore. As soon as you come across Raising Cane’s and you’re greeted by the aroma of their freshly made crinkle-cut fries, the urge to resist would be impossible. Offering a completely different atmosphere, we consider it a great food stop after a long walk or cruise. Raising Cane’s Arabian Gulf location includes a drive thru, so that during summer, you can grab your food and still enjoy the beautiful view as well as the food. Blast some good tunes in your car as you enjoy a bite from one of your favorite meal combos, be it the Box Combo, the Three Finger Combo or the Sandwich Combo. Drive up, get your Raising Cane’s fix and enjoy their signature, perfectly fried and tender chicken fingers. When the weather gets warmer, make sure you also pick up an order of their legendary Iced Tea. Headed to a weekend gathering? Show up and impress everyone at the Diwaniya with Raising Cane’s bags full of chicken finger goodness! This is why we’re loving these drive thru locations, they’re great for creating awesome food moments with the ones you love. The other Raising Cane’s drive thru is perfect for those living nearby the Da’iya Co-op or the Kuwait City governorate. The spot is cozy, easy to reach, and the warmth you’ll receive there from the 24hour marinated hand-battered chicken tenderloins, premium crinkle-cut fries, golden brown buttery Texas toast, with a secret recipe handmade Cane’s sauce, and creamy coleslaw will keep you ultimately satisfied. Pick the vibe and the mood you’re in and choose one location from the many Raising Cane’s in Kuwait. Head over there and experience the lovely and different atmospheres of each one. All we have now left to say “Chicken Chicken Chicken, which combo are you pickin?!”

Find Raising Cane’s at Arabian Gulf Street - Bneid Al Gar, Da’iya Co-op (Drive Thrus), The Mall-The Avenues, The Forum-The Avenues (inside TEKZONE), Ahmadi Park, Jabriya, Shuwaikh 125, and Kuwait International Airport Terminal 1 & 4. For more information follow @raisingcanesme on Instagram.

CHILDREN OF THE LAND

by Marcelo Hernandez Castillo, Memoir

THE KINGDOM OF BACK by Marie Lu, Fantasy

When Marcelo Hernandez Castillo was five-yearsold and his family was preparing to cross the border between Mexico and the United States, he suffered temporary, stress-induced blindness. Castillo regained his vision, but quickly understood that he had to move into a threshold of invisibility before settling in California with his parents and siblings. Thus began a new life of hiding in plain sight and of paying extraordinarily careful attention at all times for fear of being truly seen. Before Castillo was one of the most celebrated poets of a generation, he was a boy who perfected his English in the hopes that he might never seem extraordinary. Children of the Land distills the trauma of displacement, illuminates the human lives behind the headlines and serves as a stunning meditation on what it means to be a man and a citizen.

Two siblings. Two brilliant talents. But only one Mozart. Born with a gift for music, Nannerl Mozart has just one wish—to be remembered forever. But even as she delights audiences with her masterful playing, she has little hope of ever becoming the acclaimed composer she longs to be. She is a young woman in 18th century Europe, and that means composing is forbidden to her. She will perform only until she reaches a marriageable age—her tyrannical father has made that much clear. And as Nannerl's hope grows dimmer with each passing year, the talents of her beloved younger brother, Wolfgang, only seem to shine brighter. His brilliance begins to eclipse her own, until one day a mysterious stranger from a magical land appears with an irresistible offer. He has the power to make her wish come true—but his help may cost her everything.

HARLEY IN THE SKY

EIGHT PERFECT MURDERS

By Akemi Dawn Bowman, Contemporary Fiction

by Peter Swanson, Thriller

Harley Milano has dreamed of being a trapeze artist for as long as she can remember. With parents who run a famous circus in Las Vegas, she spends almost every night in the big top watching their lead aerialist perform, wishing with all her soul that she could be up there herself one day. After a huge fight with her parents, who continue to insist she go to school instead, Harley leaves home, betrays her family and joins the rival traveling circus Maison du Mystère. There, she is thrust into a world that is both brutal and beautiful, where she learns the value of hard work, passion and collaboration. Harley must come to terms with the truth of her family and her past—and reckon with the sacrifices she made and the people she hurt.

Years ago, bookseller and mystery aficionado Malcolm Kershaw compiled a list of the genre’s most unsolvable murders, those that are almost impossible to crack. But no one is more surprised than Mal, current owner of the Old Devils Bookshop in Boston, when an FBI agent comes knocking on his door one snowy day in February. She’s looking for information about a series of unsolved murders that look eerily similar to the killings on Mal’s old list. And the FBI agent isn’t the only one interested in him. To protect himself, Mal begins looking into possible suspects—and sees a killer in everyone around him. Suddenly, a series of shocking twists leaves more victims dead—and the noose around Mal’s neck grows so tight he might never escape.

THE CITY WE BECAME

HOUSE OF EARTH AND BLOOD

by N. K. Jemisin, Fiction

by Sarah J. Maas, Fantasy

This extremely urban fantasy, a love/hate song to and rallying cry for the author’s home of New York, expands her story The City, Born Great. When a great city reaches the point when it's ready to come to life, it chooses a human avatar, who guides the city through its birthing and contends with an extradimensional enemy who seeks to strike at this vulnerable moment. Now, it is New York City’s time to be born, but its avatar is too weakened by the battle to complete the process. So each of the individual boroughs instantiates its own avatar to continue the fight. Every great city has a soul. Some are as ancient as myths, and others are as new and destructive as children. But every city also has a dark side. A roiling, ancient evil stirs in the halls of power, threatening to destroy the city and her six newborn avatars unless they can come together and stop it once and for all.

Bryce Quinlan had the perfect life—working hard all day and partying all night—until a demon murdered her closest friends, leaving her bereft, wounded, and alone. Hunt Athalar is a notorious Fallen angel, now enslaved to the Archangels he once attempted to overthrow. His brutal skills and incredible strength have been set to one purpose—to assassinate his boss’ enemies, no questions asked. But with a demon wreaking havoc in the city, he’s offered an irresistible deal: help Bryce find the murderer, and his freedom will be within reach. As Bryce and Hunt dig deep into Crescent City’s underbelly, they discover a dark power that threatens everything and they find, in each other, a blazing passion. With unforgettable characters and page-turning suspense, this richly inventive new fantasy series by Sarah J. Maas delves into the heartache of loss, the price of freedom—and the power of love.

WOMEN’S MARCH

This month’s music page is entirely dedicated to the groundbreaking female musicians and artists out there, who have given us daily inspirations, and ultimate growth through their music. They’ve graced our self-care playlists, inspired our girl power mood, and elevated us to a whole new level. We grew up stronger with them, formed connections through their songs and their lyrics that have always hit a high chord. Here is one to the women artists!

THROWBACK THURSDAYS

By Destiny’s Child

SURVIVOR

By Amy Winehouse

BACK TO BLACK

I PUT A SPELL ON YOU

We stan this album hard! Survivor by the iconic American girl group was released back in 2001, and remains to be one of the greatest albums till this day. We’re always left excited and totally nostalgic whenever Destiny’s Child performs from time to time as a brief reunion with Beyoncé. From “Independent Women Part I” to “The Story Of Beauty” with the BOP’s “Bootylicious” and “Survivor”.

First things first, RIP Amy. Her second and last album before she passed was Back To Black, an album where no matter how many years have passed, we still hold proudly high. The retro-sounding soul music of the album made Winehouse one of the most contemporary artists during the early ‘00s. Iconic songs such as “Tears Dry On Their Own” and “Rehab” are still on replay.

Her voice is what makes every song as powerful as Nina. The 1965 album featured classics like the song which is also the name of the album “I Put A Spell on You” and the everlasting tune of “Feeling Good”. Nina’s musical range is unbreakable as it is astonishing, with each and every song she truly casts a spell on us that is almost eternal.

By Nina Simone

COLLAB CRUSH

MORNING

HEY GIRL

LADY MARMALADE

By Teyana Taylor & Kehlani

By Lady Gaga ft. Florence Welch

By Christina Aguilera, Lil’ Kim, Mya, Pink

The ultimate girl crush song, and the duo that graced our playlists swiftly. Kehlani and Teyana dropped this chill track and swept us all away with their vocals. The single came out late last year, but it is looking to be on Teyana’s upcoming and third album that is yet to be released, which is currently titled The Album, and we are tuned in!

Two amazing artists who have both excelled with this upbeat song, giving us yet another great duo! “Hey Girl” is featured on Gaga’s 2016 album Joanne, and you’d think that the vocal differences between both of them wouldn’t go hand-in-hand, but Florence and Gaga proved us wrong as they continued to hit just the right notes making us want more from the duo.

We simply cannot end this page without mentioning the ultimate girl power song that is “Lady Marmalade ''. The single essentially came out in 2001 for the film Moulin Rouge and instantly became the iconic female empowerment anthem due to the diverse dream team collaboration between these four artists. Wouldn’t an updated version of this song be incredible? Yet, we know that maybe nothing would beat this gem collab!

LIBRA SEP 23 – OCT 22 Balance is key in your life, so try to check in on it from time to time to keep it up. Explore new ways to inspire your creativity and your groundbreaking imagination. Don’t shy away from your intimate powers, but work on creating even more beautiful bonds.

ARIES MAR 20 – APR 19

Seek and narrow your direction. Prepare yourself to take lead on opportunities, where you’ll be able to exercise in the field of creativity. Define your talents and your aesthetics once more. Pay closer attention to your inner voice, listen to your instincts, and prioritize your health, be more conscious to your surroundings. This energy will inject excitement back into your daily flow.

TAURUS APR 20 – MAY 20 Support is what you need right now! Enjoy chilling and kicking back with those who support you the most. Unwind for a bit and relax when you get the chance. Govern your inner growth, and notice the changes happening around you. Don’t let them frighten your thoughts, but rather let them encourage you for the betterment of yourself first.

GEMINI MAY 21 – JUN 21 Your emotions are waiting to be heard, listen to them carefully. Acknowledge your feelings and be sure to understand them fully before reacting. Take the time to revisit some circular problems you have laying around and try to break the loop by learning from these essential life lessons. Explore new opportunities if you must and watch out for the overflow of your emotions.

CANCER JUN 22 – JUL 22 Listen to your heart, where your true power is and consider retracting back into your shell. That will help you in readjusting your focus back to yourself. Learn to say no to avoid burning yourself out and protect that energy. You’ll be up and on top of your responsibilities before you know it, use this strength to continue building up your grounds!

SAGITTARIUS NOV 23 - DEC 21 Your fiery energy is flaming hot, but careful of it lighting up way too high. Get encouraged, daydream about the life you’d like to create, and enjoy the ride!

CAPRICORN DEC 22 – JAN 19 Get off-task more often, and have a look at where your mind will start taking you. You may be ready to make some significant moves and changes. Set boundaries in between work and your personal life, and to those who may over step them. Nurture that need for some independence and enjoy leaving your comfort zone. Take it slowly, but also, take some of those aesthetic risks to a whole new level.

PISCES FEB 19 – MAR 19 Tap into your sweet psychic spirit and listen well. Read your emotions, as your loved ones are able to sync with you easily during this sensitive time. Enjoy the limelight while you can, and demonstrate your talents briefly, you’re not one who takes joy in being the center of it all. Be gentle with yourself, and don’t overthink the unnecessary external influences.

LEO JUL 23 – AUG 22 The good causes are calling out for your actions. There are days where you’re finding yourself brainstorming how to contribute in bettering the world, the time has arrived for you to mark your field and take some risks! Consult with your closest and trusted friends for feedback on your upcoming journey before jumping the gun to relate your way of thinking better.

VIRGO AUG 23 – SEP 22 An epiphany is about to strike, and your heart strings might be pulled! But, steer it towards the ongoing opportunities by giving back to your community during this positive transition. Continue to ask yourself on the steps you need to take to meet your needs, and as usual, don’t be afraid to demonstrate your extraness. Use this chance to recenter yourself and your thoughts.
