One of my axioms goes like this: “The quality and impact of my life are determined by the depth of my relationship with Jesus.” Having picked up this Chapter a Day Guide and Journal, I’m confident that you agree with that statement. So here’s the question: How do we cultivate a deep, intimate relationship with Jesus? Answer: by spending consistent, quality time with Him. No spiritual discipline has been more helpful in my relationship with Jesus than daily Bible reflection and prayer. It’s not the only thing that helps us grow, but it is the main thing. And here’s where Chapter a Day comes in. This journal is designed to help you spend daily time with God in His Word and in prayer. Years ago, a friend said to me, “I wish means I want it for free.” Many people wish they had a deep relationship with Jesus, wish they lived a more godly life, wish they had God’s wisdom, wish they were people of the Word and prayer. But the truth is, they want it for free. In other words, it really isn’t their highest priority. You and I are the product of our choices. All of us are busy with much to do. In the bustle of life, it’s easy to overlook our highest priority in life, that of cultivating a personal, intimate relationship with the Lord. Therefore, I’m challenging you – with God’s help – to make the choice to spend daily time with Him. For most Christ followers, committing oneself to meaningfully reading a chapter a day (and you can always read more!) is the best thing you can do to grow. And the more you grow in your walk with Jesus, the greater the quality and impact of your life. Dallas Willard, in his book The Great Omission, says, “I often tell people I can give them one verse that is worth more than any college education, and it is Joshua 1:8. It will guarantee them the life that they only dimly dreamed to be possible.” “Study this Book of Instruction continually. A WORD ABOUT VOLUME 3 This is the third volume of what will be five Chapter A Day journals. Each volume will lead you through the entire New Testament, which consists of 260 chapters. In addition, you will read 105 Old Testament chapters over the course of each year. Volume 1 provided an overview of the Old Testament through 105 key chapters. Volume 2 focused our Old Testament reading on the Poetical Books commonly known as Wisdom Literature. Volume 3 guides us through 105 chapters of the Pentateuch. The Greek word Pentateuch, which means “five books,” refers to the first five books of the Bible: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy. These five books are also known as The Torah. The Pentateuch was written by Moses, except for the last chapter of Deuteronomy, chapter 34, which describes Moses’ death and burial and also describes the handing over of Jewish leadership to Joshua. The Pentateuch gives us a biblical worldview of creation, the entrance of sin, and the history of the nation of Israel through which God’s blessing to the nations flows. From the call of Abraham and the birth of Jacob’s 12 sons (Genesis) to the giving of the Law at Mount Sinai (Exodus) to Israel’s call to be a holy, set apart people (Leviticus) to disobedience and lack of faith (Numbers), we as followers of Jesus can learn much about the nature of God and a life that pleases Him. This Chapter A Day journey begins by reading through key chapters of the Torah, followed by the New Testament. The New Testament chapters have been arranged chronologically to help you better understand the storyline of the life of Christ, the advancement of the Gospel, and the theological development found in the epistles. When reading the Scriptures, understanding the context is key. That’s why sometimes it’s helpful to refer to a trusted reference. I recommend Warren Wiersbe’s “With the Word: The Chapter-by-Chapter Bible Handbook,” or the two-volume “Wiersbe Bible Commentary.” An exciting addition to volume three is a weekly memory verse. On the first day of every week you will find a memory verse in place of the prayer. This verse is taken from one of the seven chapters you’ll read that week. We encourage you to commit to memorizing each of these verses as you progress through the journal. It will change you! Reflecting daily on Scripture, praying faithfully, and memorizing the Word are sowing seeds that will reap a harvest of godliness for you in the days ahead!
Final encouragement: stay faithful and stay the course! The tendency with annual reading guides is to start strong and then fade. If you miss a day, simply pick up where you left off. Make the daily choice to say no to other pressing needs for the sake of maturing in your relationship with the Lord.
INTRODUCTION All of us are called by Jesus to “make disciples” (Matthew 28:19). The first person we are to disciple is ourselves. Jesus says, “A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone when he is fully trained will be like his teacher” (Luke 6:40). We are to be like our Teacher, Jesus. That happens as we spend time with Him.

We are changed by Jesus as we reflect upon God’s Word and receive what He is saying to us, and then respond in faith and obedience. Disciples grow by continually receiving and responding to the Lord.
RECEIVE and RESPOND. That’s the key to spiritual growth.
One of the problems is our lack of time with the Lord and His Word. That is about to change for you as you commit to spending daily time with Him!
There are two simple questions that help us receive and respond: To receive, we ask: What is God saying to me? To respond, we ask: What am I to do with what God is saying to me?
In your “A Chapter A Day” guide, you will find a simple structure that will help you become a self-feeder as you receive and respond. The structure has been adapted from Wayne Cordeiro’s book “The Divine Mentor” and is called the SOAP Devotional Method.

P R AY E R Finish your time in the Word with a personal prayer to God. It might be praise, confession, thanksgiving or intercession. Ask Him to help you apply what you have learned. As a family, we want to learn to pray together in agreement. You’ll find a prayer included every day in this journal so we can unite together in prayer.
HOW TO USE THIS JOURNAL Here are a few helpful suggestions on how to use your journal most effectively.
1. Set aside a specific time and quiet place to meet with God. You will need your Bible, this journal and a pen.
2. Receive and Respond using the SOAP method. Read each day’s Bible chapter. Write down the specific Scripture through which God is speaking to you. Receive by reflecting on that verse, asking, “What is God saying to me?” Respond by writing down your application, asking, “What is God asking me to do?”
3. Title the page. Take a moment to give today’s chapter a short title: one or two words that will help you remember your time with God’s Word.
4. Pray spontaneously. End your time with prayer. Talk to the Lord like you would a friend. Praise Him for His goodness, thank Him for things, and ask Him for that which is on your heart. You can keep a list of those for whom you’re praying in the back of this journal.
5. Pray together with your church. Join with our church family in praying that God would change us and use us.

God created all of humankind in his own image! “image” is repeated twice. To be created in his image means made in his likeness. As an image bearer, we have personality, the ability to make moral decisions, and can commune with God. In a world that downplays the sexes, God creates “male and female” – God differentiates the sexes and assigns great worth to both male and female.
My ultimate identity and worth is found in the truth that I am made in God’s image. God made me for a relationship with him . Therefore, communion with God must be my highest priority. I commit myself to reading A Chapter A Day throughout this year in order to more fully become the image bearer God made me to be.
Lord, you are so good to me. I don’t know why you chose to give me the gift of life and make me in your image, but I’m so thankful!
