Synopsis Sinopsis

Ander believes that, like many others, what his father suffered in prison was torture. While he resolves his suspicions, he immerses himself in the world of forensic doctors, psychologists, psychiatrists and lawyers who have elaborated the "Research project on torture and ill-treatment in the Basque Country between 19602014". Along them, he delves into concepts such as psychological torture or the Istanbul Protocol, giving us an insight into the reality of torture in the global north.

Ander sospecha que, al igual que muchos otros, lo que padeció su padre en comisaría fue tortura. Mientras resuelve sus sospechas se sumerge en el mundo de los médicos forenses, psicólogos, psiquiatras y abogados que han elaborado el "Proyecto de investigación de la tortura y malos tratos en el País Vasco entre 19602014". Junto a ellos ahonda en conceptos como la tortura psicológica o el Protocolo de Estambul, dándonos a conocer la realidad de la tortura en el norte global.

Even though the condemnation of torture had been a feature in my world, when I want to the presentation of the report from the Basque Institute of Criminology I saw the light. The incidence, dimension, scientific methodology and, most importantly, the capacity of torture to remain in the shadows surpassed my worst nightmares. In the documentary I start from an incident in my family, as this will help the spectator to accompany me on the journey, but during these six years our obsession has been to explain the dimension of modern torture in its totality, using the Basque case. Although directors think that each film is the most important in the world, the fact is that as a filmmaker you rarely have the chance to do something that has the potential to contribute something significant to society, and I think that this is one such case. Looking to the future, I would like this film to be remembered as the referential film with regard to what has happened in the heart of the West, that it will be a driving force for divulging what has happened and will lead to a social movement for reparation and measures to prevent any repetition.

Pese a que la denuncia de la tortura ha estado presente en mi entorno, cuando acudí al acto de presentación del informe del -Instituto Vasco de Criminología- se me cayo la venda. La incidencia, dimensión, metodología científica y lo más importante, la capacidad de la tortura para permanecer en la sombra superaba mis peores pesadillas. En el documental parto de un suceso familiar, ya que ayudara al espectador a acompañarme en el viaje, pero durante estos seis años nuestra obsesión ha sido la de explicar la dimensión de la tortura moderna en su totalidad, usando el caso vasco. Aunque a los directores cada película nos parece lo más importante del mundo, lo cierto es que como cineasta pocas veces tienes la oportunidad de hacer algo que tenga el potencial de aportar algo significativo a la sociedad, y creo que este es el caso. Mirando al futuro, lo cierto es que me gustaría que recordarán esta película como la película referente de lo sucedido aquí, que sea un motor para la divulgación de lo que ha sucedido y eso lleve a un movimiento social para la reparación y medidas de no repetición.
