welcome Bringing the world to Broken Arrow. It’s a bold statement, isn’t it? Yet since opening its doors in 2009, that’s exactly what the Broken Arrow Performing Arts Center has done. The PAC has become the artistic home for students, staff and the community of Broken Arrow. It has also become a stage that showcases the finest talent in the world that come to Broken Arrow not only to perform, but also to inspire future generations of artists. In seven short years, the BAPAC has become an internationally recognized venue in the performing arts world, drawing ticket buyers from across 36 states and a number of foreign countries such as Canada, Australia, Mexico and the United Kingdom. Thousands of people come to downtown Broken Arrow, the newly branded Rose District, to not only see a show, but also to shop, eat and stay. The success and impact of the PAC has not happened by accident. It took careful planning, incredible collaboration among school district and city leaders, creativity, patience and a singular vision on how the arts can inspire a community to dream big and then go even bigger. When I was growing up, one of my favorite shows was “The Carol Burnett Show,” and now to be able to welcome Ms. Burnett here in Broken Arrow is an honor. She is a living legend and highlights another incredible year of shows that will fill the hall with laughter, story telling, music, and world-class performers. From Carol to Vicki Lawrence, Lyle Lovett to Kristin Chenoweth, and four Broadway divas to the characters of “Greater Tuna,” it promises to be an historic eighth season. With Gratitude

Newly-organized ARTSOK Alliance seeks

The partnership between Broken Arrow Public Schools, community leaders, Kristin Chenoweth and the Broken Arrow Performing Arts Center Foundation has proven to be a unique and rare collaboration that has brought many amazing opportunities and gifts to Broken Arrow’s students, teachers and citizens. As the focus on the arts in Broken Arrow grows, so does the need for a unified organization to help in the development of its continued success. ARTSOK, the Regional Arts Alliance of

to unify Northeast Oklahoma arts scene

Broken Arrow, is an organization combining the strengths of the former Broken Arrow Performing Arts Center Foundation and the Broken Arrow Arts and Humanities Council of Broken Arrow. This merger creates a unified arts organization with a broader reach and greater impact for the community. ARTSOK’s creation unifies fundraising efforts, provides greater diversity in programming, offers more grant opportunities and gives a stronger voice to arts advocacy at the local, state and national level. “Legislation in the state government is a vital and necessary part of keeping the arts alive in Oklahoma and beyond,” said Mark Frie, president of ARTSOK. “This is why we advocate for the arts with legislators, showing them the economic and quality of life impact arts has in our community. Approaching senators and representatives about funding for the arts is something we do no take lightly-and will continue to be a proponent of the arts for years to come.” Future plans for ARTSOK include maintaining all the great programming currently offered at the

BAPAC and programs such as Art After Hours, Art in Public Places, Chalk it Up, Poetry Slam, Tuesdays in the Park, The Spotlight Series, Kristin Chenoweth’s Broadway Boot Camp and Master Class events, after-school programs and many others. ARTSOK will also be an integral part in the construction of a new arts center in downtown Broken Arrow, bringing an even bigger impact of the arts to Broken Arrow, and enhancing arts education for its students and community.

Lovett, Folds celebrated in ARTSOK Concert Series ARTSOK-The Regional Arts Alliance proudly presents the Concert Series at the Broken Arrow Performing Arts Center. The inaugural series brings two diverse yet uniquely popular acts to the stage this season. “An Evening With Lyle Lovett” showcases the talents of award-winning Lyle Lovett and his unique blend of Americana and country music on Oct. 29. “Ben Folds: And A Piano” welcomes Ben Folds to the BAPAC with a high energy rock performance using the intimacy of just a piano on Nov. 9. Both shows are on sale now at the box office or by visiting www.brokenarrowpac.com LYLE LOVETT A singer, composer and actor, Lyle Lovett has broadened the definition of American music in a career that spans 14 albums over three decades. Coupled with his gift for storytelling, the Texas-based musician fuses elements of Americana, swing, jazz, folk, gospel and blues in a convention-defying manner that breaks down barriers. Whether touring as a ‘Duo’ or with his ‘Acoustic Group’ or ‘The Large Band’, Lovett’s live performances show not only the breadth of this Texas legend’s deep talents, but also the diversity of his influences, making him one of the most compelling and captivating musicians in popular music. Since his selftitled debut in 1986, Lyle Lovett has evolved into one of

music’s most vibrant and iconic performers. Among his many accolades, besides the four Grammy Awards, he was given the Americana Music Association’s inaugural Trailblazer Award, and was named Texas State Musician. His works, rich and eclectic, are some of the most beloved of any living artist working today. BEN FOLDS Ben Folds is widely regarded as one of the major music influencers of our generation. He’s spent over a decade sharing the stage with some of the world’s greatest symphony orchestras – from Sydney, Australia to the Kennedy Center, performing his pop hits and his critically acclaimed concerto for Piano and Orchestra. For five seasons he was a judge on the popular NBC series “The Sing Off,” which catapulted the art of a cappella into the national spotlight, and helped launch the careers of numerous a cappella groups. Throughout his career, Folds has created an enormous body of genre-bending musical art that includes pop albums as the front man for Ben Folds Five, multiple solo rock albums, as well as unique collaborative records with artists from Sara Bareilles and Regina Spektor, to Weird Al and William Shatner. His most recent album is a blend of pop and classical original works, in part recorded with the revered classical sextet yMusic that soared to #1 on both the Billboard classical and classical crossover charts.

Eighth season of Spotlight Series kicks off with Burnett, Lawrence in nostalgic style

You’ll LOL (Laugh Out Loud) with the eight season of the Spotlight Series, presented by AVB Bank. The new line-up starts off with two women who are familiar to audiences of all ages--and to each other. “Vicki Lawrence and Mama: A Two-Woman Show” graces the stage on Sept. 16, while award-winning legend Carol Burnett stops by on Oct. 8 for “An Evening of Laughter and Reflection Where The Audience Asks Questions.”

Multi-talented Vicki Lawrence rose to fame on “The Carol Burnett Show,” which premiered in the fall of 1967; the same year Vicki entered UCLA to study Theater Arts. She spent 11 years with Carol, earning one Emmy Award and five Emmy nominations. After the Burnett show ended, Vicki went on to star in her own TV series, “Mama’s Family” with Ken Berry, Dorothy Lyman, Beverly Archer, and Allan Kayser. The last original episode was made in January of 1990, completing five years of first-run syndication. On stage Vicki has appeared in numerous productions, including “Carousel”, “Send Me No Flowers”, “I’m Getting My Act Together and Taking It ON The Road”, “Annie Get Your Gun”, and live from the Grand Ole Opry. “Carol Burnett--An Evening of Laughter and Reflection Where The Audience Asks Questions” brings the comedy legend back to the stage. An awardwinning actress and best-selling author, she is widely recognized by the public and her peers for her comedic and dramatic roles on television, film, and Broadway, most notably “The Carol Burnett Show.” Named in 2007 by TIME magazine as one of “100 Best Television Shows of All Time,” “The Carol Burnett Show” ran for 11 years, averaged 30 million viewers per week, and received 25 Emmy Awards, making it one of the most honored shows in television history. On Broadway she recently starred in A.R. Gurney’s “Love Letters” (2014), “Fade Out, Fade In” and Stephen Sondheim’s musical review “Putting It Together.” She produced and starred in numerous television specials and guest starred on several television series, including “Glee,” “Hot in Cleveland,” “Hawaii 5-0” and “Law and Order: SVU.”

PHELPS

Fifth time’s a charm for Gaither vocalist It’s a five-peat as Gospel vocalist and multiple award-winner David Phelps returns to the Broken Arrow Performing Arts Center for a record FIFTH time on Dec. 12, this time to present his Christmas show. For more than a decade, Phelps has honed that ability to identify and deliver great songs, and it has earned him a reputation as one of the Christian industry’s most versatile voices. A graduate of Baylor University with a degree in vocal performance, Phelps gained acclaim during his eight years with the Gaither Vocal Band, before leaving to resume his solo career with a deal on Word Records. Noted as a lyric tenor for his ability to sing in a high tessitura for sustained periods, Phelps has consistently garnered rave reviews for his three octave range. Beyond his obvious technical skill, what sets Phelps apart is the heart and emotional weight he brings to each performance. David’s awards list is long and thorough, being honored not only as part of the Gaithers, but also as a solo vocalist, including Male Vocalist of the Year at the

2002 Gospel Music Association Dove Awards. His wife, Lori, of eighteen years and their four children define the ‘extra’ in extraordinary - those little masterpieces we often fail to notice. Looking back on David Phelps’ own legacy, so far, he has come a long way from Tomball, Texas. Over the greater part of the last two decades, David’s artistry has grown to echo off the walls of Carnegie Hall, and vibrate the chandeliers in the White House and in countless halls and churches around the world. His masterful melodies have been burned into critically-acclaimed solo offerings, award-winning Gaither Vocal Band CDs, and Gold and Platinum Gaither “Homecoming” collections. It has been a showcase far above the expectations of any ordinary artist. But for David, a perpetual work in progress, these happy years have been just an extended glimpse of the Creator’s bigger picture. Pushing the boundaries is every artist’s goal, and David’s focus is beyond the ordinary, trusting in that Divine design.

Four Real

‘4 Girls 4’ features Broadway legends

When four dynamic, award-winning musical stars from Broadway, film, TV and recordings come together in concert on the same stage, what transpires is an evening of song, laughter and memories. You will be delighted by the biggest hits from their Tony Award winning Broadway shows and performances with “4 Girls 4,” coming to the BAPAC Jan. 21, 2017. The show stars Broadway staples Andrea McArdle, Maureen McGovern, Donna McKechnie and Faith Prince. Andrea McArdle first captured the hearts of theatergoers everywhere in 1977 when she originated the title role in the mega-musical “Annie,” based on the popular Harold Gray comic strip “Little Orphan Annie.” Since then, she has starred in several Broadway musicals and appeared in theatres in New York, nationally and internationally. She has honed her craft by working with some of the great legends of the entertainment industry such as Ethel Merman, Liza Minnelli, Julie Andrews, Bob Hope, Liberace, Frank Sinatra, Steve Martin and Martin Short. Maureen McGovern, celebrated as “The Stradivarius Voice,” recently marked the 40th anniversary of the release of her #1 Oscar-winning International Gold Record, “The Morning After” from “The Poseidon Adventure,” which garnered her a Grammy Nomination. She received her second Grammy Nomination in 1998 for “Best Traditional Pop Vocal” for her solo piano/

voice album, “The Pleasure of His Company,” with Mike Renzi. Other hits include, “Can You Read My Mind” from “Superman,” the Oscar-winning “We May Never Love Like This Again” from “The Towering Inferno” and “Different Worlds” from the TV series “Angie.” Donna McKechnie, the Tony Award winning star of “A Chorus Line,” is regarded internationally as one of Broadway’s foremost dancing and singing leading ladies. Most recently she created the musical staging for a production of “Six Dance Lessons In Six Weeks” starring Leslie Caron. Donna appeared at 54 Below, New York’s celebrated Supper Club, presenting “Same Place: Another Time,” her new musical show Last year she co-starred in “Love, Loss And What I Wore” and in John Doyle’s “Ten Cents A Dance” at the McCarter Theatre in Princeton, N.J.. In 2008, she was nominated for Tony, Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Awards for “A Catered Affair.” Other Broadway credits include “The Little Mermaid,” “Bells Are Ringing,” “Nick & Nora,” “Jerome Robbins’ Broadway,” “Little Me,” “The Dead” and “Noises Off.”

Century

Chenoweth, friends help celebrate national ‘Bernstein at 100’ event May 6

Leonard Bernstein was a true Renaissance Man of the 20th Century. Not only was he a world class Maestro; a prolific composer of renowned symphonies, ballets and Broadway shows; a beloved television teacher to generations of young music lovers; a dedicated, lifelong humanitarian – but he was also a warm, funny, exuberant human being, a father of three, whose most emblematic gesture was the bone-crushing hug. How to reflect all of this in a single concert performance celebrating Leonard Bernstein’s 100th birthday? There is, in fact, a very special way. Celebrating “Bernstein at 100” embraces the many facets of Leonard Bernstein. First there is the repertoire, which spans Broadway, the concert hall, the intimate recital stage, and the opera house. Then there is the narrator: Leonard Bernstein’s eldest daughter Jamie Bernstein providing a unique personal perspective on her father’s life and work, sharing backstage stories and personal recollections, as well as insights into the music. And third, there is acclaimed singer and actress Kristin Chenoweth, a lifelong fan of Leonard Bernstein’s music. These two artists are a perfect match; both Leonard Bernstein and Ms. Chenoweth regularly leap across genre barriers, expressing themselves with

equal comfort in the concert hall, the theatre, and the opera house. Ms. Chenoweth made an indelible impression on audiences in the role of Cunegonde in Bernstein’s beloved operetta/musical, “Candide.” As the Bernstein Centennial season begins, this truly festive concert will feature her brilliance in some of Bernstein’s most treasured music. Joining Ms. Chenoweth and the Tulsa Symphony Orchestra is a full sized chorus – enabling audiences to revel in such gems as the iconic Balcony/Fire Escape Scene from “West Side Story,” as well as the soaring finale from “Candide,” “Make Our Garden Grow.” Ms. Chenoweth’s lithe performing abilities are on glorious display as she performs Bernstein’s broad array of material: from the comic to the romantic to the spiritual. Bernstein’s protégé and colleague, conductor Michael Barrett, brings his deep knowledge of the Bernstein repertoire to music directorship of the concert program. This extraordinary evening of music reflects Leonard Bernstein in all his astonishing musical diversity - a grand, tuneful, affectionate 100th birthday event.

getting to know you BAPAC patrons share their stories and love of the arts

Kate Pike Box Office Manager

Broken Arrow Performing Arts Center What is the first show you can remembering seeing in a theatre? In elementary school I remember taking a school field trip to the Tulsa PAC to see what I believe was part of a Tulsa Opera production. I also remember my Girl Scout Troop going to a local high school to see the students perform “Rapunzel.” And while both were very different in the scale of each production, with the grandiose of the Opera and the simplicity of the student play, both made an impact on me and sparked my love of live theatre. What kind of shows did you like growing up? When I was younger my favorites were Rodgers & Hammerstein’s “Cinderella” and “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers,” but as I got older I gravitated towards the musicals of the ‘70s and ‘80s. “Hair,” “A Chorus Line” and “Chess” have incredible soundtracks. And I loved the quirky side of theatre as well. Mel Brooks’ musicals and Christopher Durang cannot be beat for their comic geniuses. What kinds of shows do you enjoy today? I love the Tulsa Opera and Tulsa Ballet productions, and we have such great community theatre in Broken Arrow and in Tulsa so I try and go to as many shows as possible. And of course I’m so spoiled with the shows we have here at the BAPAC. It’s so hard to pick a favorite show but I really loved The Midtown Men and Elvis, and any performance by Kristin Chenoweth can’t be missed. She truly puts on the best concerts. How do you think the BAPAC has benefited the Broken Arrow community? I’m so proud to work at the BAPAC and at BAPS. What we have here is so unique and special not only in our community but in the US! Students have amazing opportunities to attend Master Classes with world renowned artists, such as Wynton Marsalis, actors with Broadway tours and our very own Kristin Chenoweth. The BAPAC also has also been a pioneer with the arts not only in BA but in Oklahoma by having several Oklahoma premiers like the Broadway tours of “Peter & The Starcatcher,” “Bring It On” and “In the Heights.” One of my favorite parts of my job is getting to talk to our patrons and hearing their stories and how excited they are to have world class entertainment just down the street from them! Main Street alone has grown tremendously since the BAPAC has started. People ask me all the time where should they eat before a show, and now it’s so hard for me to choose just one restaurant–we have so many amazing places to eat in the Rose District!

Love of

the Arts

Kristin Chenoweth gives back to the community with Arts & Education fund Hometown girl and multiple award-winner Kristin Chenoweth continues to take her love of the arts in Broken Arrow one step further with the Kristin Chenoweth Arts & Education Fund, an organization dedicated to elevating the arts in extraordinary young lives. This past summer, the Broadway Bootcamp took place in her theatre for the second year, a week-long exercise in music, drama, theatre and more in which more than 40 students from across the region learned the ins and outs of musical theatre.

Kristin surprises a Broadway Bootcamp student mid-performance.

The third annual master class was also recently held, in which Chenoweth joined 10 lucky students on stage and mentored them live in front of an audience. “Ms. Chenoweth has a heart for arts in education,” said Mark Frie, Broken Arrow Performing Arts Center executive director. “For this master class and for the camp, she brought together her love for her two alma maters—Broken Arrow Public Schools and Oklahoma City University—and created a unique opportunity for many high school and college students to further their creative arts aspirations.” Cattle call-style auditions were held in February and March of 2015 at the BAPAC and at Oklahoma City University. Answering that call were more than 200 students from grades nine through college level, with auditionees flying in from more than a dozen states. The camp taught audition techniques, stage movement and included Skype interviews with Broadway industry professionals. Dr. David Herendeen, director of musical theatre program at Oklahoma City University, lead the camp along with a small staff. “To me, true talent like we experience with Kristin is something that is not taught in school,” said Herendeen. “It has to do with a giving heart. So I can’t help but be excited about our new partnership in Broken Arrow. I’m going to find heart in the heartland for sure.” Kristin recently donated $20,000 from the Arts & Education Fund to Broken Arrow Public Schools’ fine arts vocal music programs. In a year of budget cuts, the donation came at a time when many arts programs are being cut from public schools. “I am so excited to partner with the Broken Arrow Performing Arts Center to help raise awareness for the arts in the city I call home,” said Chenoweth. “Giving back to the community is a privilege, and I feel most fortunate to be able to support educational and artistic opportunities in Broken Arrow.” To donate to the Arts & Education Fund, visit brokenarrowpac.com/give.html and click on the secure PayPal link.
