The main purpose of this building is to continue to aid approximately 4,500 children annually while providing after school educational, tutoring and mentoring programs. These Life Skill programs build character and instill life-enhancing values to promote healthy choices through the game of golf. The nine core values are: Honesty, Responsibility, Courtesy, Judgment, Respect, Perseverance, Integrity, Confidence and Sportsmanship. The Teaching and Practice areas with the addition of the new Learning Center, have become a state of the art facility and the best by far in Miami-Dade County. The range has target greens, fairway and green side practice sand bunkers, two chipping greens and a monster practice putting green. The driving range and the putting green are lit and are open from 7:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. every day.

Mission Statement: “To impact the lives of young people by providing learning facilities and educational programs that promote character development and life-enhancing values through the game of golf. The First Tee Miami is a fun-filled program where children are learning about the great game of golf, while also learning valuable life skills that will increase their potential for success both on and off the course.”

Additional Past News:

All of these construction projects were a part of the long-range strategic plans and visions directed by the DeLucca family to make International Links Miami - Melreese Country Club the premier destination for golfers of all levels. The vision of the DeLucca family was only a dream until 1997, when the City of Miami and the Miami Sports and Exhibition Authority gave support and financial backing with a $3.8M renovation of the golf course and its teaching/practice facility; and so this dream of the DeLucca family was on its way to becoming a reality. The golf course was redesigned by Charles Mahannah and has several tee starting points starting with junior tees for golfers in the 7 to 8 year old category all the way up to highly skilled golfers with yardage exceeding 7,100 yards. The revamped greens were constructed with Tiftdwarf Bermuda grass designed to meet both the USGA and USDA specifications. The course is home to the Dade Amateur Golf Championships, which are held every November, as well as many Junior, First Tee Miami, local tournaments and other charitable events. The construction continued with a $4.8 million dollar new Clubhouse and Restaurant built in 2009. The new clubhouse has a Pro Shop that sells numerous lines of golf clubs, balls, shoes, clothing and accessories for men, women and junior golfers. Both men’s and women’s locker rooms have full bathrooms, showers and lockers. The clubhouse boasts a fine restaurant which is open to the public. Its creative menu serves breakfast and lunch. You will find many professionals, attorneys, doctors, judges, business owners from all walks of life, including the City’s movers and shakers, enjoying these facilities. The International Links Miami - Melreese Country Club is also the headquarters of the Dade Amateur Golf Association and The

Doral Publix Junior Classic. These tournaments have a long history of producing great champions that have gone on to further their careers on both the LPGA and PGA tours. The facility also enjoys a strategic location in Miami, being only 2 minutes away from the Miami International Airport, 10 minutes from downtown Coral Gables, 15 minutes from downtown Miami or Coconut Grove, and 20 minutes from South Beach. The International Links Miami - Melreese Country Club is also the home to Prestige Golf owned by Juan Gomez who is the premier golf club fitter in Miami-Dade County. He has worked with shaft designers and the R&D departments of major golf equipment manufacturing companies. He is a fully Certified Advance Fitter. He has made the country’s list of the Top 50 shaft designers and manufacturers which is a distinction selected by the golf manufacturing industry. He has recently signed a five year contract as the official fitter of the Evian Masters LPGA tournament in France.

The First Tee and Grasp Learning: A Partnership for After School Academic Support

T

he First Tee Miami will be launching its After School Program in the new state-of-the-art Learning Center in January, in alliance with Grasp Learning, a pioneering after school academic program. In addition to immersion in The First Tee’s Life Skills Experience, children will receive support in three areas: homework assistance, study skills development, and digital literacy. Grasp will also work closely with The First Tee to identify students who need assistance preparing for standardized tests or who could benefit from foundational reading skills reinforcement. In addition, Grasp can provide one-to-one tutoring for families seeking a personalized learning solution.

Mr. Gary Berman, Mrs. Valerie Berman (Grasp Learning founders) with Mr. Charlie DeLucca Jr. and Mr. Charlie DeLucca III.

The First Tee and Grasp are looking forward to working together to make after school both productive and enjoyable!

Thanks to a blended learning approach, students will be able to complete homework assignments and projects onsite with the guidance of a Learning Coach, and can then expand their learning online. In the Learning Center’s computer lab, students will learn to access information responsibly and safely. Our participants will also work collaboratively on a semester project that will be fun and engaging, as it will tie in golf, life skills, academic, and digital skills. Each week, Learning Coaches will focus on a specific study skill or strategy and its practical applications. From managing time to taking tests, Grasp will teach specific approaches that lead to higher school achievement when learned and applied consistently. As such, children will be “learning how to learn.”

“The First Tee of Miami which impacts the lives of over 4,500 kids in our City annually, will now have a permanent home to continue the work of providing educational programs that build character, instill life enhancing values and promote healthy choices through the game of golf,” expressed Commissioner Willy Gort.
