From the Head of Barker College

Congratulations to all students and staff for the achievement of the 2020 Primary Years Programme (PYP) Exhibition. Amidst this tumultuous and challenging time in 2020, our Year 6 students and their teachers have made history – this is our first PYP Exhibition! I am truly inspired and delighted by their achievements. The process of mounting an Exhibition is demanding. Students conceive a central idea and then seek to become somewhat expert on their response. They must collaborate with one another and with their mentors, demonstrate keen research skills, synthesise their content and create a coherent response that calls for action from those who view their Exhibit. So much of the work of school education is setting students busy work and testing them to report on their progress. In the PYP Exhibition, the whole narrative shifts to student-led inquiry. The joyous thing to observe is the delight in learning that every student achieves.

I thank our marvellously inspiring Year 6 team of teachers and support staff. The group mentors provided gentle guidance and reassurance and also deserve our thanks. The Junior School Curriculum Leadership Team under Mr Lubrano and Mrs Bonazza have guided the process with gracious care. And, yet again, the parents and families of Barker students have been a steadfast and loving support for the groups. Congratulations to all in our 2020 Year 6 Exhibition. May we all learn, grow and delight as we thrive in God’s creation

Mr Phillip Heath AM Head of Barker College

In this strange and challenging year, we are unable to share the Exhibition with our families and staff as we had intended. This is also your moment to enjoy, but COVID-19 restrictions required us to seek a new way of sharing. Despite this, I hope that the delight and joy of learning bursts from the screen and into your hearts.

Introductions

The Junior School began the journey towards becoming a PYP school back in 2015. This has been an exciting journey as students and teachers have grown and adapted throughout this process. The Authorisation of the school at the beginning of 2020 was a significant achievement for Barker and was recognition for the work undertaken over the previous 4 years. Year 6 Exhibition is the culmination of the PYP journey coming in the final year of the program. It celebrates the learner, showcasing the knowledge, understanding and skills of the learner as well as their capacity to independently explore and investigate an area of interest in line with a common central idea. Exhibition provides the opportunity for Year 6 students to demonstrate many of the attributes and attitudes they have developed throughout their PYP journey. Students are at the centre of the learning and through a process of guided inquiry, staff and students explore and navigate a path to greater understanding and knowledge. They begin to examine things from a global perspective and develop socially responsible attitudes and thoughtful and appropriate action.

Exhibition is a collaborative process and I acknowledge the staff who have been an extremely important part of the journey. The Year 6 team along with all other teachers and support staff who have assisted and mentored the students have been wonderful. They have demonstrated commitment to the learning community and the selflessness required to bring about positive educational outcomes. I would like to congratulate the students on their work throughout this unit of inquiry. I am extremely proud of their involvement, commitment and achievement. They have demonstrated passion and maturity beyond what I would have expected in this first ever Barker exhibition. Well done to all and congratulations!

Martin Lubrano Head of Junior School

Learning in the PYP provides many formal and informal opportunities for students to demonstrate how they have developed and applied their knowledge, conceptual understandings, skills and learner profile attributes through the inquiries they undertake. The PYP exhibition is a notable example of these opportunities. In the PYP exhibition, students demonstrate their understanding of an issue or opportunity they have chosen to explore. They undertake their investigation both individually and with their peers, together with the guidance of a mentor. Through the exhibition, students demonstrate their ability to take responsibility for their learning - and their capacity to take action - as they are actively engaged in planning, presenting and assessing learning. The exhibition is a powerful demonstration of student agency, as well as the agency of the community that has nurtured them through their years in the PYP. The learning community participates in the exhibition, supporting and celebrating the development of internationally minded students who make a positive difference in their lives and the lives of others.

Mr Paul Harmon (Digital Learning Leader PK 12), Mrs Sharron Stokes our Junior School Librarian, our wonderfully supportive Single Subject Specialist Teachers and our Mentors from across the campus. You have all added so much to the process and we are forever grateful. Finally to our amazing students. You have continued to inspire me on this journey. Your passions for what you believe in make me feel safe in what our future holds, not just for our planet but for humanity.

Mrs Lisa Bonazza Director of Primary Curriculum (PYP Coordinator)

Sincere thanks goes to our Year 6 staff who have made this journey not only rewarding for the students but for our whole school community.

From the Teachers Exhibition. What a journey! This culminating and collaborative experience has been wonderful to be a part of. Being Barker’s first exhibition, it has been crazy, scary, fun, exciting and highly rewarding. The students have achieved wonderful things and learnt so much throughout this exhibition journey. And I have too! Mrs Bonazza, the mentors and all the specialist teachers have contributed so much to the planning and implementing of their students’ passions and their thoughts around action. The Year 6 teachers are simply brilliant. They have produced a diverse range of ideas, created many engaging and unique learning experiences and supported them in every way possible. The exhibition experience has shown me how creative and insightful Year 6 students can be. Through their journal, their group collaboration and their action, the students have demonstrated knowledge, responsibility, open-mindedness and true passion for their chosen topic. They have proved that passion really does lead to people taking action. Mr Tim Moyes Year 6 Teacher As an IB PYP Yr 6 Educator, it has been my pleasure to see the students develop as “inquirers” through the articulation of their knowledge and the development of their Transdisciplinary Skills. This Exhibition has allowed me to teach, model and facilitate learning experiences alongside an enthusiastic teaching team. The students have been extremely blessed to have the wholehearted support and expertise of the wider school community through the extra time commitment displayed from the Teacher Mentors. As Barker’s first PYP Exhibition, the “bar” has been set at a high standard for future years to reach. Miss Jodey Bayliss Year 6 Teacher

Well what a journey! As my first year undertaking the PYP Exhibition, I have never felt more excited and inspired by a group of students, who so obviously love learning. Their passions, drive and, for the most part, self-management skills have carried them across the last eight weeks. Not an easy feat for many, with a few exclaiming at the beginning that they prefer to just “be told what to do”, but by the end demonstrating outstanding creative and critical thinking. A true testament to their sense of responsibility. But what inspires my teacher heart the most, is that each and everyone of their learning journeys and action pieces demonstrates a deep care for their world and others! I’m one proud (& tired!) teacher! Ms Beth Foord Year 6 Teacher

I have seen the Year 6 Exhibition as an organic, evolving process where students have developed knowledge and understanding about their passion topic. Through creative and innovative avenues, they have communicated their message with the goal of instigating positive change within the world around them. Students have relished this special opportunity to inform, challenge and persuade the viewer. Watching them step into the shoes of others, show empathy and adopt a range of perspectives has been a particular highlight for me. Students have acknowledged that even a small act or gesture can make a powerful difference in our world and it has certainly been a rich learning experience for each individual. Ms Katie Morrison Year 6 Teacher

The Year 6 Exhibition is a celebration of learning. As an educator on Year 6, this excites me. Being an IB PYP Teacher here at Barker College is such a privilege and I am so glad I am able to be an educator to our amazing Year 6 students of 2020. I am so proud of the students application to their learning for Exhibition. I have done multiple exhibitions before and I have never seen a group of students come together as this group has. It has been so good to see the students really apply themselves to their issue and show their passion to make a difference through action. I am blown away by the different ways in which the students have taken action, which shows me their understanding of their topic, the central idea and the lines of inquiry. I have also enjoyed working alongside some amazing educators, sharing knowledge and ideas openly to benefit the students throughout the process. We have learnt so much and have been very reflective throughout the process. I am so grateful for such a caring and compassionate team to work with. Mrs Alyssa Swan Year 6 Teacher

From the Teachers Exhibition is a model that teaches students how to learn. It showcases and celebrates their learning journey. Being my first Exhibition, it has been a learning journey for me as well. It has been the biggest lesson I have ever taught. Rather than facilitating the learning of a concept over 30 minutes, it has been 8 weeks of fun where teachers, students and even the wider community have collaborated with one another to connect individual understanding to a variety of concepts. This has been done through inspiring experts, connecting students to their learner attributes and by guided research and reflections. Mr Roger Young Year 6 Teacher

Students’ knowledge of the Transdisciplinary Themes, Key Concepts and Attributes of the Learner Profile are evidenced in the exploration of the Transdisciplinary Theme of Who We Are. Exploring each student’s passions to inspire action has enabled the students to develop their communication, thinking, research, social and self-management skills. The culmination of this is an action of participation, advocacy, social justice, social entrepreneurship or lifestyle choices. The diverse passions on display cover Local, National and World issues. Mrs Sharron Stokes Junior School Librarian

From a technology perspective, our PYP exhibition has been a fantastic experience. We have a wide range of technologies available for our students and as they have progressed through the exhibition theme they have been increasingly excited to try various creative options these technologies present. From 3D created models of their design ideas to a variety of apps to create some really exciting learning opportunities. The growth of the students during this time has been a wonderful process to watch, for one example to see and film 132 boys in a very creative dance to our exhibition theme song has been an absolute highlight for me. I can’t wait for you all to see it. Mr Paul Harmon Digital Learning Leader

Logo Design

Winners

The logo designs for 2020 were created through a grade wide competition, initiated by the Year 6 Team. With the support of Ms Loder, one of our Art Specialists, and Julie McAllister, Barker’s Director of Communications, students worked through a creative process to create a logo that achieved the nonnegotiable elements of a quality logo. All images were then collated and the Year 6 cohort voted on what logos best achieved the determined success criteria. Finally, the Junior School Executive reviewed the voted logos and selected two winning entries, which the boys combined together to create one Exhibition logo. Congratulations to Leo Zou (6B) and James Nicholls (6B) for their outstanding creative representations of the Barker 2020 Exhibition.
