Scholarships for Year 7
Academic Scholarship
The Angus Scholarship
The Council of Barker College provides up to three Scholarships for students of outstanding academic potential entering Year 7. Barker currently offers Academic Scholarships to the value of between 50 and 100% of tuition fees only.
This Scholarship is awarded to a student who demonstrates commitment to co-curricular and community activities and performed well on their exam. The amount of a refund of the Full Admission fee will be received by the family at the end of the first term of Year 7.
Music Scholarship
Evelyn Hill Scholarship
The Council of Barker College provides up to two Music Scholarships to students entering Year 7 who play an orchestral instrument. The Head of Barker may at his discretion award an additional Music Scholarship to an outstanding vocal or instrumental performer. Barker Music Scholarships provide assistance both with general School tuition fees and also with instrumental or vocal tuition. The award of a Music Scholarship is subject to a student satisfying the School’s general requirements for academic entry as well as meeting the selection criteria for the award of a scholarship, as determined by their performance in the Scholarship examination.
A scholarship for a girl commencing in Year 7. This is a full 100% scholarship for a girl who shows outstanding academic potential.
Music Scholarships are offered to the value of 50% to 100% of Academic tuition fees and 100% of the Music lesson tuition in one instrument.
This scholarship is available for a student who shows excellence and future potential in their chosen sport and who can demonstrate they will add to the life of the School by their participation and attitude. The amount awarded is at the discretion of the Scholarship panel.
The Copeland Scholarship The EW Copeland Scholarship, is awarded to an outstanding applicant from the Barker Junior School and provides assistance of an amount of 50% of Academic tuition for Years 7 to 12.
Bowman Sisters Scholarship Four full 100% scholarships are offered to girls commencing in Year 7 2021 and 2022. The recipients of these scholarships will be students who add to the life of the School and demonstrate this by their participation and attitude, the School’s motto Honor Non Honores. All-round excellence would be the benchmark of these applicants.

Scholarships for Year 10
Music Scholarship
Head of Barker College Scholarship
The Council of Barker College provides up to two Music Scholarships to students entering Year 10 who play an orchestral instrument. The Head of Barker may at his discretion award an additional Music Scholarship to an outstanding vocal or instrumental performer.
This scholarship is for a current Year 9 student moving to Year 10. They need to demonstrate outstanding academic achievement and contribution to the life of the School through their participation and attitude They do not sit the external examination.
Barker Music Scholarships provide assistance both with general School tuition fees and also with instrumental or vocal tuition. The award of a Music Scholarship is subject to a student satisfying the School’s general requirements for academic entry, as well as meeting the selection criteria for the award of a Scholarship as determined by their performance in the Scholarship examination. Music scholars are expected to provide musical leadership and encourage participation in the music program. The award of a Scholarship is conditional upon the scholar maintaining satisfactory progress, conduct and participation in the co-curricular music program throughout their time at Barker. Music scholars are also expected to take music as part of their HSC studies. Music Scholarships are offered to the value of 50% to 100% of Academic tuition fees and 100% of the Music lesson tuition in one instrument.
Academic Scholarship The Council of Barker College currenlty provides up to five Scholarships for boys and girls of outstanding academic potential entering Year 10. Barker currently offers Academic Scholarships to the value of 50% of Academic tuition fees only.

Academic Subject Specific Scholarship Up to a maximum of four additional Scholarships are awarded at the discretion of the Head of Barker to students entering Year 10 who demonstrate particular aptitude for Mathematics, Science, English, or the creative arts generally. Selection criteria for these individual subject Scholarships include presentation of a portfolio of work indicating the range and depth of a student’s experience and capability in their preferred area of study. These Scholarships are not available to students currently attending the School and are for 25% of Academic tuition fees only.
The Barker Foundation Scholarship This is an open-entry scholarship for boys and girls currently seeking to enter Year 10, who are Australian citizens or permanent residents of Australia who meet established selection criteria, including outstanding academic potential and meritorious performance in academic work, as well as grounds of financial need or equity. All applicants will be broadly assessed against the same criteria which apply to School Council Academic Scholarships. The Barker Foundation Scholarship is for 50% of the Academic tuition fees only.
While performance in the Scholarship examination is taken into account in the award of this Scholarship, aspects of the student’s character and communitymindedness are also important in the determination of the award. The Barker Foundation Scholarship has particularly been established to offer the opportunity to attend Barker to a student whose family’s circumstances might not otherwise enable him or her to do so.
Co-Curricular Scholarship This scholarship is available for both current and external students who show excellence and future potential in their chosen sport and who can demonstrate they will add to the life of the School by their participation and attitude. The amount awarded is at the discretion of the Scholarship panel.
The Leslie’s Men Scholarship This Scholarship has been endowed by Old Boys who attended the School during the term of WS Leslie as Headmaster (1933-1957), and is currently awarded to a boy or girl entering Year 10.
All applicants are assessed on the same criteria which applies to academic scholarships, although the applicant’s involvement in team games and other cultural and recreational pursuits is also taken into account in recognition of WS Leslie’s strong belief in the importance of such activities in a young person’s life. While performance in the Scholarship examination is taken into account in the award of the Scholarship, aspects of the student’s character and communitymindedness are also important in the determination of the award. Applicants are interviewed by a panel including the incumbent Chair of Leslie’s Men, together with the Head of Barker and the Director of Enrolments. The Leslie’s Men Scholarship has particularly been established to offer the opportunity to attend Barker to a student whose family circumstances might not otherwise enable him or her to do so. The Leslie’s Men Scholarship is for 50% of the Academic tuition fees only.

Boarding Scholarships
The ICPA Scholarship
The Reefton Scholarship
This is for families who are financial members of the Isolated Children Parents Association. 50% of the boarding costs only are covered by this Scholarship.
Established by a former Barker parent in appreciation for the education her two sons received while boarding at Barker. The Reefton Scholarship is available to a boy entering Year 10 who is a resident in rural NSW, ideally on a farming property and who shows application in his schoolwork as well as aptitude and interest in major team sports. The Reefton Scholarship provides assistance with boarding fees only for three years. This scholarship covers 50% of the boarding costs and is not necessarily awarded each year.
Boarding These Scholarships are normally awarded to students residing in country areas of NSW or interstate and are for a reduction of up to 50% in the boarding fees only, not academic fees, for three years. In addition, there are two 50% Academic tuition Scholarships for one male and one female boarder awarded each year.

Barker Academic Program
Curriculum is the core business of any school and the teaching staff at Barker are committed to a whole-school approach to curriculum development and delivery; the material of the curriculum being various and flexible enough to cater to the needs of every student. Barker has prioritised a curriculum that values thinking and understanding. As a registered and accredited School with the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) , Barker students sit the Higher School Certificate. Strong HSC results are a priority for our School. This is not only because of the notable academic tradition that the School has enjoyed since its foundation in 1890, but also because of the strategic aim in providing the highest possible quality in education. HSC results are one of the ways of measuring this. Furthermore, student HSC results have a direct relationship to entry to tertiary education. As a “bridge to university”, Barker recognises the need for students to obtain strong ATAR results in order to maximise opportunities for university study.

Each year, on average, 93% of our students in Year 12 proceed to study at university or other tertiary institutions. This raises a variety of needs. As a student moves into the senior years, there is an increasing need for learning and teaching at Barker to reflect the environment into which students will go when they leave school, as well as to provide students with the required capabilities to achieve personal goals related to further or higher education and training as well as employment. Our teaching programs are regularly reviewed and updated to reflect the latest educational research and NESA requirements enabling our students to run their course in learning, and, in so doing, become lifelong learners.

Barker’s Music Program Barker has a large music program. Over 1000 students are engaged in and participate every week, from Pre-K to Year 12, in a wide-ranging co-curricular music program.
Instrumental or vocal lessons, students practising, bands rehearsing, this is a vibrant centre of activity. The Music Centre offers these outstanding facilities:
The Music Program has over 27 ensembles and there are a wide variety of performance opportunities for students including:
• The 120 seat Malcolm Williamson Recital Hall and choir rehearsal room
• 6 concert bands • Jazz program – including quintets, orchestra, ensembles • Symphony Orchestra and Chamber Orchestra • Choral program • Chamber music • Rock bands • Musical production in conjunction with the Drama department • Music tours – national and international The program features a strong subscription to elective music courses from students in Years 9 to 12, and a vibrant and effective compulsory music program from Kindergarten to Year 8. The McCaskill Music Centre is an excellent purpose-built facility in which most music at Barker takes place. The sounds of students making music greets anyone who walks past the Music Centre from 7.30 in the morning to 4.30 in the afternoon and often much later.

The choirs and orchestras of Barker have an outstanding reputation at the Sydney Eisteddfod and the Bands have been highly successful in both regional and national championships. The School is justifiably proud of its HSC results in Music 1, Music 2 and Extension Music. Students involved in music at Barker have a very strong sense of identity and belonging to the Music Centre. The shared ownership of the resources, classes and music activities, together with support from peers in Years 3 to 12 and leadership opportunities in a range of ensembles, means that all students gain exceptional pastoral care and growth through their involvement in music at the School.

Scholarship Criteria The award of a Scholarship at Barker is conditional upon the student maintaining satisfactory progress and conduct throughout their time at Barker. All scholarships are subject to annual review but are normally tenable until Year 12, provided that the Scholarship recipient demonstrates continuing satisfactory academic performance and conduct. In addition to these requirements, students holding academic scholarships will be expected to:
• Maintain an average effort rating in each semester greater than 4.2 for academic scholars and 4.5 for the others; • Demonstrate a commitment to and high levels of participation in a range of cocurricular activities including at least one team-based sporting activity, one cultural activity and one community service-related activity each year; and, • Show consistent high standards of citizenship.
• Maintain a place in the rank order of their year group which attains a Distinction Prize (top 5%);

Our Scholarship Alumni Stories
Seung Yup (Henry) Baek Academic
Like any student who puts in an enormous amount of effort, not just in academics but in co-curricular activities and leadership contributions, receiving a Barker Scholarship proved to be an immensely motivating factor. People underestimate the motivational power of positive recognition of a job well done. The Scholarship does not merely provide financial assistance, rather, it is a symbolic representation of the culture of celebration— upholding high expectations and vocally praising the quality performance of the students. Academic excellence is merely the inevitable outcome that follows a quality learning process. And that process is ensured by the occasional confirmation that we are progressing well. For me, the Scholarship was that confirmation, and it was the stepping stone by which I reached greater heights. Barker offers an extensive range of extracurricular activities as well as leadership opportunities. Throughout my schooling life, I believe I took full advantage of these programs such as music, sports, debating, public speaking, as well as various leadership positions in both Middle School and Senior School.
As President of the Student Representative Council (SRC), the most defining moment of my time at Barker, was when the School approved and actually delivered our plan for the renovation of the Common Room, which was an unprecedented achievement not just for the students, but for the SRC as a key facilitator for the student voice. I am also an avid debater, and I can still recall the fervour in myself and my team when we came second and I received Best Speaker in the Macquarie Cup Debating Competition 2014. Being awarded a Scholarship to Barker allowed me to think bigger and dream higher, as I interpreted the reward as a validation of my potential for future performance. I henceforth dreamed of studying law at Sydney University, and am currently studying Law and Commerce at the University of Sydney. The community that Barker creates and the connections made with its alumni beyond the school, are far reaching. I feel that I belong in a wider network even in university, and I expect these connections to be not only useful but fulfilling later on in the workplace.

James Jeffery Boarding
Receiving a Scholarship to Barker allowed me to attend a School that I would not have been able to do otherwise. I received a Rural Boarder’s scholarship and an All-Rounder Scholarship and started boarding at Barker in Year 11. During my time in Boarding, I believe I grew as a Christian, as an athlete, in my academics and in my musical ability, through the lessons I received from an incredible piano teacher. The highlight of my Barker experience was the 2014 CAS Athletics Carnival at Sydney Olympic Park. Winning the CAS for the third time in a row was incredible and I can remember the atmosphere was one like the Olympic Games!

Barker offered me the facilities and resources which I needed to progress academically, to pursue my athletics interests as well as giving me the opportunity to be a leader in the Barker community. It was definitely the bridge for me between school and university and it was one of the best decisions I have ever made to attend such a fantastic place for the final years of my secondary education. I met some of my best friends whilst at Barker – friends that I will have for life.
Annalise Unsworth
Old Barker Association Scholarship
Receiving a Scholarship at Barker provided me with the opportunity to attend a great School, where my academic and extracurricular interests were fostered. Academically, I excelled with the support and teaching I received, becoming Dux of the School in 2010. The vast co-curricular activities on offer helped me make friends through a wide variety of interests and year groups, particularly as I played in the same hockey team for three years in a row! A highlight of my time at Barker was participating in the outdoor education program, which included hiking in the Royal National Park and canoeing at Barrington Tops. At school I was involved in a wide variety of areas, including debating, surf life saving at Bungan Beach SLSC and playing flute in the band. I’m still a member of the Bungan Beach Surf Life Saving Club and enjoy catching up with a number of former students at the beach.
The Scholarship at Barker set me up with a strong foundation for future academic pursuits, sporting and debating skills. Barker provided a good pathway from school to university, and I am now finishing off a medical degree at UNSW. I developed a love for hiking and camping at Barker, which has led me to spend my holidays hiking overseas and in remote parts of Australia. Additionally, debating was a skill that was fostered through the excellent program at Barker and I have been able to represent UNSW in debating in Australia and overseas. I have also coached debating at Barker for a number of years, providing me with a great opportunity to give back to the School and its students.

Jonathan Mui
Music and Academic Scholarship
One of the best things about Barker is the abundance of co-curricular activities that augment academic life. I was awarded an Academic and Music Scholarship commencing in Year 7. Throughout my time at Barker, I was heavily involved in the chamber and symphony orchestras, as well as a string quartet. Although I had been playing the violin since the age of five, I did not have many opportunities to play music collaboratively prior to my time at Barker. Little did I know, this would turn out to be one of the most important aspects of my musical development. A highlight for me was the choir and orchestra tour to Europe in 2008. I also remember all the challenges of presenting so many concerts in many different cities – this required great discipline, concentration, cooperation and professionalism from all the musicians. The opportunities to play music in ensembles shaped my musical development decisively. Since graduating, I have given chamber music and orchestral performances all over the world, in countries as diverse as New Zealand, USA, Norway, Germany, Switzerland and Brazil.

During my studies at the Sydney Conservatorium, more than half of the total performances I gave each year were chamber music or orchestral concerts. I served as concertmaster of the Chamber and Symphony Orchestras at the Sydney Conservatorium, and was a member of the Australian Youth Orchestra, which toured internationally in 2013, performing at some of the world’s most prestigious venues (including Sydney Opera House, Amsterdam Concertgebouw and Berlin Konzerthaus). Highlights of my chamber music performances include participation in the Lausanne Summer University (intensive chamber music course with many public performance opportunities) in Switzerland in 2011, repeat appearances at the Vigeland Summer Concert series in Oslo (playing string quartets as well as duos with piano) and an appearance at the Musica Viva Festival in Sydney in 2013. I also contributed to the local classical music scene with performances in the regular series of evening concerts at the Conservatorium – solo recitals, duo recitals, trios, quartets, quintets, sextets… I’ve done a little bit of everything! Receiving the Scholarship definitely gave me the motivation to excel, both academiclly and musically. At times it was difficult to balance schoolwork and external musical commitments, however I have always felt respected and supported by the School in all my activities, and so I was not afraid to challenge myself to achieve more. Many of the friendships I made at School are still important, and I remain in contact with many of the music staff. I was recently invited back to conduct and coach the Chamber Orchestra at Barker, whilst one of the Music staff was on long service leave. It is wonderful to be respected now as a mentor and teacher, and I certainly feel confident I can give back directly to the school in this way.
