We acknowledge the Dharug, Darkinjung, Wonnarua and Yolŋu peoples who are the traditional custodians of the land on which Barker College, Darkinjung Barker, Ngarralingayil Barker and Dhupuma Barker stand. We pay respect to the Elders past, present and emerging of the Dharug, Darkinjung, Wonnarua and Yolŋu nations and extend that respect to other Indigenous people within the Barker College community.

Welcome to the 2023 Inaugural Hockey End of Season Function Evening, when we come together to celebrate the season that was. What could be a better time to celebrate sport, and more specifically, girls in sport than right now when there are more eyes than ever on the sporting world after the recent FIFA World Cup.

It has been an exciting year for the Barker Hockey program, with many achievements and success that will be celebrated this evening. Over the past four years, the program has seen increased participation and retention rates, improved consistency in the quality of our coaching, fantastic results in both the Mollie Dive and ISA sporting competitions and most importantly, a growth in the love for the sport across all age groups. There is nothing more we love to see than students enjoying being physically active and forming lifelong friendships while doing so.

It could not have been a more perfect ending to the season than being crowned the ISA Overall Championship School; a result that was earned by the hard work of both our senior and junior players. Congratulations to all students on their efforts and participation across the season. The improvements that were seen, particularly among our junior players, were outstanding, and we are excited about the future of hockey at Barker. Whilst we do not like singling out an individual team, we cannot go past acknowledging our Senior 1st team, who had an undefeated season in the ISA competition. The teamwork and support displayed in this team, supported ably by our dedicated coaches, resulted

in the team winning both the Mollie Dive Championship and the Division 1 ISA Championship – a feat we do not think has occurred before at Barker.

I would like to thank Mr Phillip Heath for his ongoing commitment to sport at Barker, in addition to Mr Cam Anderson and Mr Adam Watson for their support and preparations for this Winter Sport Season. To Mr David Giltrap whose weekly support at both ISA and Mollie Dive competitions means so much to students. Thank you to the sports administration team, who without them, the organisations of logistics would be near impossible. To the team of age co-ordinators: Miss Joanna Baxter, Miss Charlotte Paterson, Mrs Chrstine McDonald and Mrs Venta Thompson. Thank you for your endearing support of the students, following up absences and cheering from the sidelines. Thank you to Director Mr Robbie Muir, who along with our team of wonderful coaches, have improved the quality and success of the hockey program every year. Finally, thank you to all the players, parents, guardians, siblings and friends for your support and efforts both around trainings and games. From the Central Coast to the Southern Highlands, Blue Mountains and wider Sydney, your commitment to representing Barker in a team sport has not gone unnoticed.
