The Ubud Writers & Readers Festival is the major annual project of the not-for-profit foundation, the Yayasan Mudra Swari Saraswati. Tumpek Kandang | 12 October 2019

Tumpek Kandang is a special day to honour pets, livestock and household animals. Celebrated every 210 days, various offerings will be made to thank the Gods for a successful year of farming and excellent produce. On this day, prayers are offered as cows are washed and dressed-up in clothes fit for humans. Special coneshaped coconut leaves are also placed on their horns. Pigs are usually decorated with white cloths around their bellies. The animals are then fed with special foods and sprinkled with rice and holy water. Philosophically, the Tumpek Kandang celebration reminds us that everyone must have compassion for all living creatures. The name Tumpek Kandang is derived from two words, Tumpek, which means Saturday and Kandang, the Balinese word for household animals such as cows, pigs, chickens, ducks, dogs, and birds. On this day, the Balinese pray to Sang Hyang Rare-Angon, God of all animals.

Samya - An Art Exhibition Until 31 October 2019 | Santrian Art Gallery

An art exhibition is currently taking place at Santrian Art Gallery in Sanur with the theme “Samya - Considering a Balance of the Unbalanced” featuring 20 different art pieces, the work of 10 individual artists namely Galung Wiratmaja, Loka Suara, Made Gunawan, Made Wiradana, Nyoman Sujana Kenyem, Pande Alit Wijaya Suta, Putu Bambang Juliarta, Teja Astawa, Uuk Paramahita, dan Wayan Redika who are all part of Komunitas Nitirupa. Wayan Redika, coordinator of the community says the art on display was created based on local issues related to the environment, economy, politics, nationalism, and more. He said, Bali is all about Trihita Karana, but the island is now increasingly losing itself to the true meaning behind the philosophy Trihita Karana, and what is left is just the balance of the unbalanced. The exhibition is open every day to the public from 10am until 6.00pm. | www.santrianartgallery.com

Meet The Newest Member of the Mason Family! The Mason Elephant Park & Lodge has welcomed their newest addition, a beautiful and healthy baby boy, an elephant named Arjuna. He was healthy 120 kilos at birth and was standing strong within 30 minutes and walking within the hour. He took his first breast milk 4 hours later and was quite tall even for baby Sumatran elephant standards. He is the newest member of an extremely fragile and one of the world’s most critically-endangered species, where sadly they are predicted to be completely extinct in their natural habitat by as early as 2028, due to poachers and rampant deforestation. His mother, Fatimah, who was rescued at the tender age of 5 years, is now 30 and Arjuna is now her second baby to be born at the Mason Elephant Park since she first arrived. About Bali

Beautiful Island

With reputation as one of the most beautiful and diverse tourist spots in asia, bali annually attracts almost 7,000,000 visitors yearly from around the world Geographically, situated between the islands of Java and Lombok, Bali is small, stretching approximately 140 km from east to west, and 80 km from north to south. The tallest of a string of volcanic mountains that run from the east to the west is Gunung Agung, which last erupted in 1963. Located just 8º south of the Equator, Bali boasts a tropical climate with just two seasons (wet and dry) a year with an average temperature of around 28ºC. The wide and gently sloping southern regions play host to Bali’s famed rice terraces, which are among some of the most spectacular in the world. In the hilly, northern coastal regions, the main produce is coffee, copra, spices, vegetables, cattle and rice. The Balinese have strong spiritual roots and despite the large influx of tourists over the years, their culture is still very much alive. The main religion is Agama Hindu Dharma, which, although originally from India, is comprised of a unique blend of Hindu, Buddhist, Javanese and ancient indigenous beliefs; It is very different from the Hinduism practiced in India today. Naturally creative, the Balinese have traditionally used their talents for religious purposes and most of the beautiful work to be seen here has been inspired by stories from the Ramayana and other Hindu epics.

Photo Courtesy of Tiarreza The majority of Bali’s 4,000,000 people live, for the most part, in tight village communities with large extended families. The largest cities are Denpasar (the capital) and Singaraja in the north. The main tourist area stretches from Kuta to Seminyak. Kuta became a major attraction during the tourist boom of the 70’s because of its famous white-sand beaches, the surf, and stunning sunsets. Today, the stretch from Kuta to Seminyak is a major tourist destination, with hundreds of hotels, bars, restaurants and shops. Those in search of a little peace and quiet tend to head for the more serene resorts of Sanur and Candi Dasa on the east coast, or Lovina in the north. Nusa Dua, on the southern-most peninsula of the island, houses many five-star hotels. The central village of Ubud, in the hilly region of Gianyar, has also blossomed as a tourist attraction and is now considered to be the artistic and cultural centre of Bali.

Culture

Beautiful Culture By the Bronze era, around 300 B.C., a fairly evolved culture already existed on Bali. The complex system of irrigation and rice production, still in use today, was established around this time. It appears that the main religion around 500 A.D. was predominantly Buddhist in influence. In 670 A.D., a Chinese scholar (Yi-Tsing), on a trip to India, reported that he had visited a Buddhist country called Bali. It wasn’t until the 11th century that Bali received the first strong influx of Hindu and Javanese cultures. With the death of his father around AD 1011, the Balinese Prince, Airlanggha, moved to East Java and set about uniting it under one principality. Having succeeded, he then appointed his brother, Anak Wungsu, as ruler of Bali. During the ensuing period there was a reciprocation of political and artistic ideas. The old Javanese language, Kawi, became the language used by the aristocracy, one of the many Javanese traits and customs adopted by the people. With the death of Airlanggha, in the middle of the 11th century, Bali enjoyed a period of autonomy. However, this proved to be short-lived, as in 1284 the East Javanese King Kertanegara, conquered Bali and ruled over it from Java. In 1292, Kertanegara was murdered and Bali took the opportunity to liberate itself once again. However, in 1343, Bali was brought back under Javanese control by its defeat at the hands of Gajah Mada, a general in the last of the great Hindu-Javanese empires, the Majapahit. With the spread of Islam throughout Sumatra and Java during the 16th century, the Majapahit empire began to collapse and a large exodus of aristocracy, priests, artists and artisans to Bali ensued. For a while Bali flourished and the following centuries were considered the Golden Age of Bali’s cultural history. The principality of Gelgel, near Klungkung, became a major centre for the arts, and Bali became the major power of the region, taking control of neighbouring Lombok and parts of East Java.

The European Influence The first Dutch seamen set foot on Bali in 1597, yet it wasn’t until the 1800’s that the Dutch showed an interest in colonising the island. In 1846, having had large areas of Indonesia under their control since the 1700’s, the Dutch government sent troops into northern Bali. In 1894, Dutch forces sided with the Sasak people of Lombok to defeat their Balinese rulers. By 1911, all the Balinese principalities had either been defeated in battle, or had capitulated, leaving the whole island under Dutch control. During World War II, the Dutch were expelled by the Japanese, who had occupied Indonesia from 1942 to 1945. After the Japanese defeat, the Dutch tried to regain control over their former colonies, but on August 17, 1945, Indonesia was declared independent by its first President, Sukarno. After four years of fighting and strong criticism from the international community, the Dutch government finally ceded and, in 1949, Indonesia was recognized as an independent country. The People Life in Bali is very communal with the organisation of villages, farming and even the creative arts being decided by the community. The local government is responsible for schools, clinics, hospitals and roads, but all other aspects of life are placed in the hands of two traditional committees, whose roots in Balinese culture stretch back centuries. The first, Subak, concerns the production of rice and organises the complex irrigation system. Everyone who owns a sawah, or padi field, must join their local Subak, which ensures that every member gets his fair share of irrigation water. The other community organisation is the Banjar, responsible for arranging all village festivals, marriage ceremonies and cremations. Most villages have at least one Banjar and all men have to join when they marry. Banjars, on average, give membership to 50 up to 100 families and all Banjars have their own meeting place called the Bale Banjar. As well as being used for regular meetings, the Bale (pavilion) is where the local gamelan orchestras and drama groups practice. Religion Balinese people are Hindu, yet their religion is very different from the Indian variety. The Balinese worship the Hindu trinity Brahma, Shiva and Vishnu, who are seen as manifestations of the Supreme God Sanghyang Widhi. Other Indian gods like Ganesha (the elephant-headed god) also appear, but more commonly. Shrines associated with the many gods and spirits, uniquely Balinese, are found all over the island. Balinese people strongly believe in magic and the power of spirits, basing much of their religion on this. They believe good spirits dwell in the mountains and that the seven seas are home to demons and ogres. Most villages have at least three main temples, namely: (1) the Pura Puseh, or ‘temple of origin’, facing the mountains; (2) the Pura Desa, or village temple normally found in the centre; and (3) the Pura Dalem, aligned with the sea and dedicated to the spirits of the dead. Aside from these ‘village temples’, almost every house has its own shrine. Some temples, for example Pura Besakih on the slopes of Mount Agung, are considerably more important and people from all over Bali travel there to worship. Offerings play a significant role in Balinese life as they appease the spirits and thus bring prosperity and good health to the family. Every day small offering trays (canang sari), containing symbolic food, flowers, cigarettes and money, are respectfully put on shrines, in temples, in front of houses and shops, and at dangerous crossroads. Festivals are another great occasion for soothing the gods. The women carry huge, beautifully arranged pyramids of food, fruit and flowers on their heads while the men might conduct a blood sacrifice through a cockfight. The gods are invited to descend and join the festivities with music and traditional dances to go with it. This kind of event is extremely exciting, memorable and well worth attending. Art & Artist

Beautiful arts

With the arrival of European artists in the beginning of the 20th century, this soon began to change. Local artists started to develop their own individual styles. PAINTING Until the start of the 20th century, the dominant form of painting was the portrayal of Hindu epics by painters and illustrators called ‘Sangging’. Aside from making large representational paintings, the ‘Sangging’ were expected to decorate everything from gourds, wooden altars, bamboo vessels, headboards for princely bed chambers and, in particular, they were expected to illustrate astrological wall hangings on bark paper or cloth. It wasn’t until the early 1900s that western influences reached Bali. The use of Asian symbols in the works of, among others, Paul Gauguin, Toulouse Lautrec and Camille Pissaro, created a new trend for Asian-influenced art and for European painters to move to Bali. Ubud’s fame regarding art can be traced to the arrival of the German painter Walter Spies and the Dutch Rudolf Bonnet. There is a much wider range of artistic styles today. Ubud Style Influenced by the western use of perspective and everyday-life subject matter, the Ubud style is one of the most ‘expressionistic’ of all Bali’s schools. Despite this, Ubud’s art still retains many traditional features, including attention to detail and stylized characters. Batuan Style Strongly wayang based (puppet). This style involves hundreds of intricately painted representations of Balinese life, filling every available nook and cranny of the canvas. Keliki Style Keliki paintings measure 20cm by 15cm. They contain scenes of mythical and Ramayanic characters engaged in battle, good versus evil, on sinister

From this village, on the outskirts of Ubud, a new style sprang up during the 1960s. It concentrated on just a few natural components, such as birds, insects, butterflies and plants. STONE CARVING

Stone carvings were mainly used to decorate temples and palaces. There is little difference between the iconography decorating temples and that of private buildings. Gateways represent the dividing line between the inner and outer worlds and as such are the recipients of some of the most fantastic carvings. Bali’s modern-day centre of stone carving is the village of Batubulan, situated halfway between the towns of Denpasar and Ubud. TEXTILES

One of the most striking things about Bali is the rich variety of cloths and materials that are to be seen in thousands of shops throughout the island. However, only a small proportion of these are indigenous to Bali. The myriad of batik clothes and sarongs available everywhere, are mainly imported from Java. Bali does have a very rich textile industry of its own. The beautiful Songket fabrics, worn by performers of traditional dances, are a good example. In Songket gold and silver threads are woven into the cloth to create complex motifs of birds, butterflies and flowers. Endek, or weft ikat, is another common method used in Bali. In weft ikat weaving, the weft threads are dyed to create the design and are then woven with plain warp threads. The least common form of weaving to be seen in Bali is the Geringsing, or double-ikat, and it is perhaps the most sought after. In Geringsing both the warp and weft threads are dyed to their final designs before being woven together. With the exception of certain areas in India and Japan, this weaving technique can only be found in the small Bali Aga village of Tenganan, East Bali. BALIPLUS October 2019 |

WOOD CARVINGS Wood and stone carvings have traditionally been featured largely in temple and palace architecture. Immaculately carved demons and mythical beings decorate pillars, door panels, lintels and window shutters with the object of protecting the buildings from evil intruders. Scenes of legendary figures placed within a floral dĂŠcor, set a more pleasant and educational tone. With the arrival of European influences, wood carving started to develop a long more innovative and commercial lines. Today, whole villages specialise in producing certain styles of work. The village of Mas, near Ubud, is the best known for its carvings of female figures, Buddhas, characters from Hindu epics, the traditional topeng (mask) and Wayang Wong masks.

DANCE & DRAMA Dance and drama have played a historically important role in Balinese society. Through this medium, people learned about the tales of the Ramayana, Mahabarata and of other epic stories from Balinese history. The following are brief descriptions of some of the more well-known dance-dramas that can be seen at regular performances throughout Bali. Baris - This is a warrior’s dance. It is usually performed by men, either solo or in a group of five or more. Barong & Rangda - This is a story about the struggle between good and evil. Good is personified by the Barong Keket, a strange but fun-loving creature in the shape of a shaggy semi-lion. Evil is represented by Rangda, a witch. Kecak - The most famous of the Balinese dances, originated from the Sanghyang dance choirs, holds its uniqueness in the entrancing ‘Kecak, kecak’ chant. The Kecak as a dance developed in the 1930s, in the village of Bona, where it is still performed regularly. Legong - This dance tells a story of princess Rangkesari being held captive by King Lakesmi. Rangkesari’s brother, prince Daha, gathers an army to rescue his sister. The Legong is a very classical and graceful dance, always performed by prepubescent girls, who can be as young as eight or nine years old. Wayang Kulit (Shadow Puppet) - Wayang Kulit is one of the great storytelling traditions of the Javanese and Balinese people. The wayang show usually consists of a small four-piece orchestra, which provides the musical accompaniment, around sixty ‘puppets’, carved out of flat pieces of water buffalo hide, and the dalang or puppet-master. The good characters speak in ancient ‘Kawi’, whereas the evil or coarse ones speak Balinese. The Bali Agung Show The Bali Agung Show at the Bali Safari and Marine Park is an inspiring cultural performance dedicated to the entertainment of both local and international audiences. This spectacular show celebrated its 1500th performance on Jan 19, 2016. With regular scheduled performances over the past five years, the colossal and spectacular Bali Agung Show is arguably the longestrunning theatrical production in Indonesia’s theatrical history. Jalan Prof. Ida Bagus Mantra Km 19.8, Gianyar Bali | Ph: +62 361 950000 | marketing@ balisafarimarinepark.com Devdan Show Devdan’s “Treasure of the Archipelago” at the Bali Nusa Dua Theatre is a 90-minute show that takes you on a tour of the Indonesian archipelago with impressive acrobatics, effects and traditional dances. Performed 4 times a week every week.www.devdanshow.com. Calonarang The Calonarang dance tells the tale of a widow queen, Walunateng Dirah from Girah village who possessed the ability to conduct powerful black magic. Her powers were said to be stronger than the King Erlangga’s, causing fear among all that nobody would dare to ask for her daughter’s hand in marriage. The widow, furious, placed a curse on the entire land and people began to die without reason, which caused a state-wide war. The King then sought the help of a Priest, Mpu Bharadah, who defeated Calonarang with his white magic. Ramayana The Ramayana dance tells the epic love story of Rama and Sita whose love was too strong to be torn apart. Expect exciting scenes of treachery among the royal family, lost-in-the-jungle scenes, kidnappings, brave rescue missions by Hanoman the Monkey King, and a romantic ending where Rama is forever reunited with his love, Sita.

Mason Chocolates’ Secret Formula It all began with a small restaurant back in ’89; some might remember it as “Yanie’s Warung” but more than that, you’ll remember mouthwatering, honest homecooked food that fills you up from the inside out like a warm hug. Today, the owners of Yanie’s Warung lead a mini empire - you’ll know it as Mason Adventures, previously, Bali Adventure Tours where adrenaline junkies go for heartpounding escapades on land, water and sky. But more than just adventure, there is innovation and gourmet creations. The love for Bali and Indonesia’s astounding riches brought about the realization that the country, the third biggest producer of cacao beans in the world, has an unimaginable wealth of untapped resources that could bring so much happiness - otherwise known as chocolates. For 30 years, the Mason family - Nigel and Yanie Mason and their children, Shan and Jian - has been synonymous with bringing quality culinary and adventure experience to Bali and this can now be found in Mason Chocolates. Dubbed “Indonesia’s most premium artisan experience”, Mason Gourmet Chocolate Factory is where artisanal chocolatiers sort, roast and process raw fermented chocolate beans that are ethically sourced from all over the archipelago. These are no ordinary cacao beans; these organic beans are blended, hand-picked from nature, fermented (not sun-dried) and are with zero artificial additives. One bite of Mason Chocolates will leave you swooning for more; we were told that there is a secret formula, a special blend lovingly created by the people at Mason. Combined with the latest in European chocolate-making technology, you get Mason’s signature “Tropical Blend”, with tastes and textures that are unmatched by old-fashioned chocolatemaking methods, producing a far smoother blend that has a taste which cannot be destroyed by over grinding/ blending. The Mason family travelled to Europe to learn from the best chocolate artisans in the world and brought them back to Bali to share their knowledge with the team, who left with a number of unique recipes that have been handed down within the industry secretly, for many years. The result is a large selection of over 65 one-of-a-kind, gourmet chocolates ranging from dozens of different pralines and truffles, signature bar collection, chocolate thins, chocolate truffles, chocolate covered nuts range, as well as many other chocolate-inspired products. 74

REVIEW

Mason Gourmet Chocolate Factory is part of Mason Gourmet, the food and beverage arm of Mason Adventures which produces fine Italian-style gelato, a large range of bakery products, as well as Mason Chocolates. The entire set-up is housed at Koko Bambu in Taro, a large stunning and eco-friendly structure, with views of the pool, rice paddies and the jungle’s edge. The restaurant serves an interesting menu; a mix of Western meets Indonesian, meets chocolate. Try the chocolate gelato and Mason’s signature chocolate martini while you’re there. Koko Bambu is also where you can watch the entire chocolate-making process, taste and purchase from over 6000 selection of pralines, truffles, super thins, chocolate coated nuts and bars of dark, milk or white chocolate. Petani Restaurant Ubud’s Healthy & Sustainable New Menu

Petani Restaurant at Alaya Resort Ubud’s spectacular tribute to Bali and the island’s rich treasure trove of flavours has refreshed its menu to feature healthy and sustainable comfort foods with a stronger focus on vegan, vegetarian, glutenfree and organic options and a smattering of Balinese and Indonesian favourites. Fresh and light, the new menu befits Ubud’s reputation as the health and wellness hub of Bali. Tantalizing must-haves are categorized under Light, Healthy, Dessert, Kids, Snacks and Mains although the entire menu is skewed towards healthy eating. Those with an affinity for light yet satisfying meals can choose from a myriad of attractivelynamed dishes such as the Crispy Romaine Salad with Grilled Chicken, Seared Chicken Breast with Olive Oil, Sweet Potato Chips and Fried Calamari with Balinese Spices. We thoroughly recommend the Roasted Pumpkin and Ginger Soup; a soothing concoction that warms you from the inside and out. Meanwhile, the Thai Mango Salad is a fantastic starter – zesty and tangy with crispy fried soft shell crabs, the dish is a pleasantly mild medley of young green mangoes, cilantro leaf, pomelo, mint leaves and chilli garlic dressing. Pasta and pizzas are also available under Light. We absolutely love Petani’s take on the Pasta Aglio Olio, with succulent prawns in a bed of mildly spiced linguine smothered in olive oil or butter, garlic and dried chillies.

REVIEW

The heroes of the Mains remain as it was the Nasi Raja; a traditional Ubud delicacy, a cone-shaped mouthwatering arrangement consisting of yellow rice, smoked chicken, pork curry, crispy prawns, fish satay and fish parcel. The entire dish comes to you in a magnificent presentation that befits Balinese royalty. The Crispy Duck is another crowd favourite; half a duck with 2 kinds of mild sambal, steamed rice and grated coconut lawar in a mélange of Balinese spices. There are international picks that are very popular as the BBQ Pork Ribs, Salmon Steak and Sous Vide Tenderloin. Those on a strict health regime can pick anything off the Healthy list and indulge without worry. Try the Tofu Rice Bowl, or Poke The Couscous and Mushroom on Toast or the Kale Spaghetti. The Brunch Menu, available every day from 7am to 3pm will suit all health nuts well – Dragon Bowl is a crowd favourite, along with Avo On Rye and White or Whole Egg Omelet. A night out at Petani, which means “farmer” in Bahasa Indonesia, is great for both the body and the soul. The restaurant sits at the front of the hotel and faces bustling Hanoman Street. By day it is a great spot for light healthy bites with a chilled glass of wine, smoothies or juices. Happy Hour takes place every day from 6pm to 9pm. As the sun sets, the restaurant is transformed into a cool and sensual venue, with warm mood lighting and rustic décor adding timeless charms to vintage and contemporary island ambience. The mood is further enhanced by sultry live acoustic music, featuring mellow and contemporary favourites that guests can sing along to. Petani Restaurant at Alaya Resort Ubud Jl. essential info

General Things

THAT YOU SHOULD OR SHOULDN’T DO...

do

don’t

...change money at a reputable looking location, use your own (or the hotel’s) calculator before changing!

...forget to bring your passport (or a photocopy of your ID) with you at all times-as well as a copy of Bali Plus!

...put on loads of high factor waterproof suncream (especially if you intend to spend a lot of time in the water).

...swim outside designated swimming areas. Currents can be very strong so swim between red and yellow flags.

...drink a lot of bottled water and eat a lot of fresh fruit - do your body a favour.

...do drugs! It could lead to death penalty. Enough foreigners reside in Bali in courtesy of the Govt. prison service!

...try not to step on offerings in the street (walk around them). ...be careful with your belongings at all times. Crime is on the increase and can ruin your holiday. Cases of handbag snatching have been reported so please leave important documents in your hotel safe (carry photocopies) and wear your bag across your shoulders! ...respect the slow pace of processions. If stuck behind one don’t honk your horn! ...haggle when buying (except on price-tagged goods). ...buy ‘lmmodium’ to relieve bouts of Bali belly.

...touch people’s heads - it is very offensive to Hindus. ...enter a temple during menstruation. Sorry ladies! ...forget to add salt to your food and to drink lots of water-you probably sweat more here than at home. ...worry too much about the ice - it’s government quality controlled in established bars and restaurants. ...forget to look and listen while crossing the road. Cars may stop, motorbikes may not! ...forget to reconfirm your flight 72 hours prior to flying.

...have a great holiday! 94

A Word of Advice ATTENDING CEREMONIES:

Remember these are serious occasions and should be treated as such. Religious guidelines: • Always wear a sarong and sash. • Do not walk in front of people that are praying. • Do not use a flash camera or point your camera into the priest’s face! • Never sit higher than the priest or the offerings. • At cremations, do not get in the way of the attendees - however important that photographic opportunity is! • Women are not allowed to enter temples during menstruation. N.B. When attending Special Ceremonies or Anniversary Celebrations as a guest or onloocker, small donations are gratefully received. Your donation will help in paying for the offerings, and upkeep of the temple.

DANGEROUS SPORTS:

Make sure you either have personal insurance or travel insurance that will cover any accident.

DRIVING:

In Bali, always expect the unexpected, always keep your eyes open and your mind on driving. Beware of motorbikes! It is best to rent a car with full insurance as this will save time and money if you are involved in an accident. You must use a helmet at all times and have a valid license.

MONEY CHANGERS:

Be very careful when changing your money. Always check the rate of exchange and commission (if any). Most importantly, always count your money before you leave the premises and, if you can, bring your own calculator as the ones used by some places can be a little ‘inaccurate’.

PETTY CRIME:

There have been a few cases of handbags being snatched after tourists have cashed money at Banks or Money Changers! Put your money away in your ‘burn-bag’ or hold onto your hand bag tightly! When changing large amounts of money please check each note carefully as there are a number of (noticeably) fake notes in circulation. When trying on garments do not take your jewellery off and leave it lying around - give it to a friend or leave it in the hotel safe. When at a spa - use the jewellery box or locker provided for jewellery.

SWIMMING IN THE SEA:

Currents and undertows can be strong. Always swim between the red and yellow flags and don’t swim too far out! Please, do not leave your belongings unattended on the beach.

Thank you for respecting these suggestions.
