Check out our Hot Deals and What’s New section for the latest deals and packages this month. Penampahan Galungan 18 February 2020 As Galungan - also known as the Balinese New Year approaches, the Balinese are kept busy with a string of events and ceremonies that take place before the big day. Penampahan, which means “slaughter” in Balinese is the final day of preparations before the actual Galungan day (see below) where adults are kept extremely busy with last minute preparations, offerings and the slaughtering of pigs and chickens, which are later used in traditional Balinese dishes such as lawar, babi guling and satay. Children usually look forward to this day, as the atmosphere in every home is similar to that of a big family party. Hari Raya Galungan 19 February 2020 The climax of the Galungan holiday celebrations will ensure most Balinese returning to their ancestral homes to make offerings to God and their ancestors who return at this time to rest at the family temples. Prayers and giving of offerings continue at the village temple as well as homes of neighbouring families who are closely affiliated to the family. Ngerebong 27 February 2020 Pengerebongan Temple, Denpasar The Ngerebong ritual is a sacred tradition involving mass trance held eight days after the Kuningan celebrations. During this ritual, male participants stab themselves with the traditional weapon, kris, without sustaining any injuries. On this day sacred effigies from various temples in Kesiman and nearby villages will be taken to Pengerebongan temple and placed on elevated open pavilion from which they could witness the whole procession.

Kuningan 29 February 2020 Kuningan is derived from the word “kuning, which means yellow. It is the final day of a long series of ceremonies and prayers conducted for the Galungan celebrations. The Balinese believe that on this day, their ancestors return to heaven after visiting earth in the days surrounding Galungan. As a symbol of gratitude, they make offerings of yellow rice placed in bowls made of coconut leaves along with a slew of offerings and presentations and hold prayers, rituals and ceremonies in their homes and family temples. The bowls are decorated with figures of shadow puppets, which represent angels that bring joy and wealth to earth. Throughout Bali, the Barong, a mythical Balinese creature that symbolizes good health, purity and good fortune go from door-to-door followed by children playing traditional Balinese musical instruments. It is customary to give a small donation when you see the Barong for good luck. The children will happily put on a performance for you if you do. Kuningan is an important day for the Balinese, and most will be taking the day off to be with their families in their respective villagers for prayers and other cultural activities. Mekotekan Ritual 29 February 2020 Munggu Village, Mengwi This unique ritual falls on the same day as Kuningan and takes place in the village of Munggu in Mengwi and is a fantastic opportunity to stand witness to an age-old tradition dating back to the 17th century. Males of the village will reenact the victorious battles of the Blambangan war by running onto the streets while brandishing long and stiff bamboo poles. The ends of the poles are combined in mid-air to form a makeshift pyramid. Opponents will climb the peak for a friendly face off as onlookers and other participants cheer on. The event starts at 2pm and lasts throughout the afternoon.

Bali Dynasty Resort Creates its Own Hydroponic Farm

New Poplar Collection at Uluwatu Lace

Set amidst the hustle bustle of South Kuta, Bali Dynasty Resort is known as an award-winning resort offering funfilled activities for families in a tropical environment complete with a beautiful lagoon pool. As part of its ongoing commitment towards supporting ecotourism and green lifestyle sustainability, the resort has established its own mini hydroponic farm. Under the supervision of General Manager, Mr. Didit Indra, Chef Nyoman Suastika, along with the kitchen team recently participated in the resort’s very first harvest. Everything grown onsite uses no soil, 90 percent less water, 70 percentage less land and 50 percent less fertilizer.

Uluwatu Handmade Balinese Lace is thrilled to present exciting new arrivals from its “Sweet Poplar Collection”. The style is relaxed, casual, fun and young with plain and simple lines. The Poplar Collection was given its name due to a unique leaf lace pattern that is used throughout this collection. About Bali

Beautiful Island With reputation as one of the most beautiful and diverse tourist spots in asia, bali annually attracts almost 7,000,000 visitors yearly from around the world

Geographically, situated between the islands of Java and Lombok, Bali is small, stretching approximately 140 km from east to west, and 80 km from north to south. The tallest of a string of volcanic mountains that run from the east to the west is Gunung Agung, which last erupted in 1963. Located just 8º south of the Equator, Bali boasts a tropical climate with just two seasons (wet and dry) a year with an average temperature of around 28ºC. The wide and gently sloping southern regions play host to Bali’s famed rice terraces, which are among some of the most spectacular in the world. In the hilly, northern coastal regions, the main produce is coffee, copra, spices, vegetables, cattle and rice. The Balinese have strong spiritual roots and despite the large influx of tourists over the years, their culture is still very much alive. The main religion is Agama Hindu Dharma, which, although originally from India, is comprised of a unique blend of Hindu, Buddhist, Javanese and ancient indigenous beliefs; It is very different from the Hinduism practiced in India today. Naturally creative, the Balinese have traditionally used their talents for religious purposes and most of the beautiful work to be seen here has been inspired by stories from the Ramayana and other Hindu epics.

The majority of Bali’s 4,000,000 people live, for the most part, in tight village communities with large extended families. The largest cities are Denpasar (the capital) and Singaraja in the north. The main tourist area stretches from Kuta to Seminyak. Kuta became a major attraction during the tourist boom of the 70’s because of its famous white-sand beaches, the surf, and stunning sunsets. Today, the stretch from Kuta to Seminyak is a major tourist destination, with hundreds of hotels, bars, restaurants and shops. Those in search of a little peace and quiet tend to head for the more serene resorts of Sanur and Candi Dasa on the east coast, or Lovina in the north. Nusa Dua, on the southern-most peninsula of the island, houses many five-star hotels. The central village of Ubud, in the hilly region of Gianyar, has also blossomed as a tourist attraction and is now considered to be the artistic and cultural centre of Bali.

Culture

Beautiful Culture By the Bronze era, around 300 B.C., a fairly evolved culture already existed on Bali. The complex system of irrigation and rice production, still in use today, was established around this time. Photo Courtesy of Doddy Obenk It appears that the main religion around 500 A.D. was predominantly Buddhist in influence. In 670 A.D., a Chinese scholar (Yi-Tsing), on a trip to India, reported that he had visited a Buddhist country called Bali. It wasn’t until the 11th century that Bali received the first strong influx of Hindu and Javanese cultures. With the death of his father around AD 1011, the Balinese Prince, Airlanggha, moved to East Java and set about uniting it under one principality. Having succeeded, he then appointed his brother, Anak Wungsu, as ruler of Bali. During the ensuing period there was a reciprocation of political and artistic ideas. The old Javanese language, Kawi, became the language used by the aristocracy, one of the many Javanese traits and customs adopted by the people. With the death of Airlanggha, in the middle of the 11th century, Bali enjoyed a period of autonomy. However, this proved to be short-lived, as in 1284 the East Javanese King Kertanegara, conquered Bali and ruled over it from Java. In 1292, Kertanegara was murdered and Bali took the opportunity to liberate itself once again. However, in 1343, Bali was brought back under Javanese control by its defeat at the hands of Gajah Mada, a general in the last of the great Hindu-Javanese empires, the Majapahit. With the spread of Islam throughout Sumatra and Java during the 16th century, the Majapahit empire began to collapse and a large exodus of aristocracy, priests, artists and artisans to Bali ensued. For a while Bali flourished and the following centuries were considered the Golden Age of Bali’s cultural history. The principality of Gelgel, near Klungkung, became a major centre for the arts, and Bali became the major power of the region, taking control of neighbouring Lombok and parts of East Java.

The European Influence The first Dutch seamen set foot on Bali in 1597, yet it wasn’t until the 1800’s that the Dutch showed an interest in colonising the island. In 1846, having had large areas of Indonesia under their control since the 1700’s, the Dutch government sent troops into northern Bali. In 1894, Dutch forces sided with the Sasak people of Lombok to defeat their Balinese rulers. By 1911, all the Balinese principalities had either been defeated in battle, or had capitulated, leaving the whole island under Dutch control. During World War II, the Dutch were expelled by the Japanese, who had occupied Indonesia from 1942 to 1945. After the Japanese defeat, the Dutch tried to regain control over their former colonies, but on August 17, 1945, Indonesia was declared independent by its first President, Sukarno. After four years of fighting and strong criticism from the international community, the Dutch government finally ceded and, in 1949, Indonesia was recognized as an independent country. The People Life in Bali is very communal with the organisation of villages, farming and even the creative arts being decided by the community. The local government is responsible for schools, clinics, hospitals and roads, but all other aspects of life are placed in the hands of two traditional committees, whose roots in Balinese culture stretch back centuries. The first, Subak, concerns the production of rice and organises the complex irrigation system. Everyone who owns a sawah, or padi field, must join their local Subak, which ensures that every member gets his fair share of irrigation water. The other community organisation is the Banjar, responsible for arranging all village festivals, marriage ceremonies and cremations. Most villages have at least one Banjar and all men have to join when they marry. Banjars, on average, give membership to 50 up to 100 families and all Banjars have their own meeting place called the Bale Banjar. As well as being used for regular meetings, the Bale (pavilion) is where the local gamelan orchestras and drama groups practice. Religion Balinese people are Hindu, yet their religion is very different from the Indian variety. The Balinese worship the Hindu trinity Brahma, Shiva and Vishnu, who are seen as manifestations of the Supreme God Sanghyang Widhi. Other Indian gods like Ganesha (the elephant-headed god) also appear, but more commonly. Shrines associated with the many gods and spirits, uniquely Balinese, are found all over the island. Balinese people strongly believe in magic and the power of spirits, basing much of their religion on this. They believe good spirits dwell in the mountains and that the seven seas are home to demons and ogres. Most villages have at least three main temples, namely: (1) the Pura Puseh, or ‘temple of origin’, facing the mountains; (2) the Pura Desa, or village temple normally found in the centre; and (3) the Pura Dalem, aligned with the sea and dedicated to the spirits of the dead. Aside from these ‘village temples’, almost every house has its own shrine. Some temples, for example Pura Besakih on the slopes of Mount Agung, are considerably more important and people from all over Bali travel there to worship. Offerings play a significant role in Balinese life as they appease the spirits and thus bring prosperity and good health to the family. Every day small offering trays (canang sari), containing symbolic food, flowers, cigarettes and money, are respectfully put on shrines, in temples, in front of houses and shops, and at dangerous crossroads. Festivals are another great occasion for soothing the gods. The women carry huge, beautifully arranged pyramids of food, fruit and flowers on their heads while the men might conduct a blood sacrifice through a cockfight. The gods are invited to descend and join the festivities with music and traditional dances to go with it. This kind of event is extremely exciting, memorable and well worth attending. Art & Artist

Beautiful arts With the arrival of European artists in the beginning of the 20th century, this soon began to change. Local artists started to develop their own individual styles. PAINTING Until the start of the 20th century, the dominant form of painting was the portrayal of Hindu epics by painters and illustrators called ‘Sangging’. Aside from making large representational paintings, the ‘Sangging’ were expected to decorate everything from gourds, wooden altars, bamboo vessels, headboards for princely bed chambers and, in particular, they were expected to illustrate astrological wall hangings on bark paper or cloth. It wasn’t until the early 1900s that western influences reached Bali. The use of Asian symbols in the works of, among others, Paul Gauguin, Toulouse Lautrec and Camille Pissaro, created a new trend for Asian-influenced art and for European painters to move to Bali. Ubud’s fame regarding art can be traced to the arrival of the German painter Walter Spies and the Dutch Rudolf Bonnet. There is a much wider range of artistic styles today. Ubud Style Influenced by the western use of perspective and everyday-life subject matter, the Ubud style is one of the most ‘expressionistic’ of all Bali’s schools. Despite this, Ubud’s art still retains many traditional features, including attention to detail and stylized characters. Batuan Style Strongly wayang based (puppet). This style involves hundreds of intricately painted representations of Balinese life, filling every available nook and cranny of the canvas. Keliki Style Keliki paintings measure 20cm by 15cm. They contain scenes of mythical and Ramayanic characters engaged in battle, good versus evil, on sinister

It concentrated on just a few natural components, such as birds, insects, butterflies and plants. STONE CARVING Stone carvings were mainly used to decorate temples and palaces. There is little difference between the iconography decorating temples and that of private buildings. Gateways represent the dividing line between the inner and outer worlds and as such are the recipients of some of the most fantastic carvings. Bali’s modern-day centre of stone carving is the village of Batubulan, situated halfway between the towns of Denpasar and Ubud. TEXTILES One of the most striking things about Bali is the rich variety of cloths and materials that are to be seen in thousands of shops throughout the island. However, only a small proportion of these are indigenous to Bali. The myriad of batik clothes and sarongs available everywhere, are mainly imported from Java. Bali does have a very rich textile industry of its own. The beautiful Songket fabrics, worn by performers of traditional dances, are a good example. In Songket gold and silver threads are woven into the cloth to create complex motifs of birds, butterflies and flowers. Endek, or weft ikat, is another common method used in Bali. In weft ikat weaving, the weft threads are dyed to create the design and are then woven with plain warp threads. The least common form of weaving to be seen in Bali is the Geringsing, or double-ikat, and it is perhaps the most sought after. In Geringsing both the warp and weft threads are dyed to their final designs before being woven together. With the exception of certain areas in India and Japan, this weaving technique can only be found in the small Bali Aga village of Tenganan, East Bali. BALIPLUS February 2020 |

WOOD CARVINGS Wood and stone carvings have traditionally been featured largely in temple and palace architecture. Immaculately carved demons and mythical beings decorate pillars, door panels, lintels and window shutters with the object of protecting the buildings from evil intruders. Scenes of legendary figures placed within a floral dĂŠcor, set a more pleasant and educational tone. With the arrival of European influences, wood carving started to develop a long more innovative and commercial lines. Today, whole villages specialise in producing certain styles of work. The village of Mas, near Ubud, is the best known for its carvings of female figures, Buddhas, characters from Hindu epics, the traditional topeng (mask) and Wayang Wong masks.

DANCE & DRAMA Dance and drama have played a historically important role in Balinese society. Through this medium, people learned about the tales of the Ramayana, Mahabarata and of other epic stories from Balinese history. The following are brief descriptions of some of the more well-known dance-dramas that can be seen at regular performances throughout Bali. Baris - This is a warrior’s dance. It is usually performed by men, either solo or in a group of five or more. Barong & Rangda - This is a story about the struggle between good and evil. Good is personified by the Barong Keket, a strange but funloving creature in the shape of a shaggy semi-lion. Evil is represented by Rangda, a witch. Kecak - The most famous of the Balinese dances, originated from the Sanghyang dance choirs, holds its uniqueness in the entrancing ‘Kecak, kecak’ chant. The Kecak as a dance developed in the 1930s, in the village of Bona, where it is still performed regularly. Legong - This dance tells a story of princess Rangkesari being held captive by King Lakesmi. Rangkesari’s brother, prince Daha, gathers an army to rescue his sister. The Legong is a very classical and graceful dance, always performed by prepubescent girls, who can be as young as eight or nine years old. Wayang Kulit (Shadow Puppet) - Wayang Kulit is one of the great storytelling traditions of the Javanese and Balinese people. The wayang show usually consists of a small four-piece orchestra, which provides the musical accompaniment, around sixty ‘puppets’, carved out of flat pieces of water buffalo hide, and the dalang or puppet-master. The good characters speak in ancient ‘Kawi’, whereas the evil or coarse ones speak Balinese. The Bali Agung Show The Bali Agung Show at the Bali Safari and Marine Park is an inspiring cultural performance dedicated to the entertainment of both local and international audiences. This spectacular show celebrated its 1500th performance on Jan 19, 2016. With regular scheduled performances over the past five years, the colossal and spectacular Bali Agung Show is arguably the longest-running theatrical production in Indonesia’s theatrical history. Performed 4 times a week every week.www.devdanshow.com. Calonarang The Calonarang dance tells the tale of a widow queen, Walunateng Dirah from Girah village who possessed the ability to conduct powerful black magic. Her powers were said to be stronger than the King Erlangga’s, causing fear among all that nobody would dare to ask for her daughter’s hand in marriage. The widow, furious, placed a curse on the entire land and people began to die without reason, which caused a state-wide war. The King then sought the help of a Priest, Mpu Bharadah, who defeated Calonarang with his white magic. Ramayana The Ramayana dance tells the epic love story of Rama and Sita whose love was too strong to be torn apart. Expect exciting scenes of treachery among the royal family, lost-in-the-jungle scenes, kidnappings, brave rescue missions by Hanoman the Monkey King, and a romantic ending where Rama is forever reunited with his love, Sita. There are many diving sites in Bali that attract divers from around the globe. Some of the diving sites, like USAT Liberty Shipwreck and Amed diving sites are suitable for beginner divers. If you’ve not yet tried these sports, we recommend that you start at Sanur or Tanjung Benoa Beach where you can hire the necessary equipment, either right on the beachfront (at a beach club) or at one of the hotel-run dive centres. Instructions are available at these diving centres. Most of the centres offer International (PADI) diving certificates but be sure to check their PADI Resort Code as well, for the insurance and medical facilities. It is advisable to look for diving centres that have a ‘five-star’ PADI Approval Rating. Please note that Bali’s only decompression chamber is at Sanglah Public Hospital in Denpasar (see ‘Hospitals’ in the ‘Essential Info’ section for more info).

Bali is blessed by nature with a short, hot wet season and a longer, cooler, dry season and tourists flock here all year round. Many tourists choose to arrive in the dry season which nowadays appears to cover a longer period from April to late November. The busiest period is during the holiday season of August, which is also the coolest month on this Island of the Gods.

In Indonesia you have to wear a helmet by law and carry an international drivers license! Bicycle/Mountain Bike Cycling can be a cheap and enjoyable way to get around and about. It does, however, take some fitness to ride around the more central and hilly regions! The northern coastal roads are ideal for longer trips. You can find bike rental shops in all the main tourist areas. ONLINE TAXIS Grab or Go-Jek are now the most convenient way to travel, simply download the application and order your ride! Tours Organised tours relieve you from the hassle of trying to navigate your own way around. You do have to follow itineraries however, so spur of the moment sight-seeing is not an option on these. Rhythm & Motion

at Rock Spa®, Hard Rock Hotel Bali Hard Rock Hotel Bali has recently unveiled its newly renovated spa and wellness centre; the Rock Spa® is a luxurious haven of tranquility that promises hours of bliss and healing. Located just above the gym, it’s a quiet enclave emanating wondrous aromatic scents where guests can expect nothing but 5-star treatments and service. The menu here is wide and varied, providing something for everyone both male and female, and even for the little ones. Guests can take their time choosing as they relax in the elegantly spacious and modern lobby decorated with plush armchairs and sofas, deep carpets and gorgeous wooden art installations further enhanced by calming lights. The Signature Treatment at Rock Spa® is a must-try - there is nothing like it on the whole island! Aptly named Rhythm and Motion, this category is incredibly unique as it involves a vibrating massage bed and a sound dome. Your massage therapist will synchronize movements with a curated playlist and the vibrations of the massage bed which moves in time along with the music! There are four treatments under Rhythm and Motion - Synchronicity, Smooth Operator, Face The Music and Wrap Remix. All of these are healing experiences using the therapeutic benefits of sound, movements and vibrations to create an experiential journey while utilizing the greatest hits from yesterday to today. All treatments were designed to reduce stress, ease muscle tension, detoxify and rejuvenate.

REVIEW

We selected the Synchronicity treatment that came with a selection of music and chose Ultimate Chill” which enables the body and mind to relax, the Hard Rock’s spin on spa music. Other sound lists include By The Sea, Sonic Restoration and Memory Lane. Unlike traditional massage treatments, this one began facing up. A hot towel is placed at the neck and a foot ritual takes place with a foot scrub using freshly cut ginger and sugar and then wiped clean of all residue using a hot towel. Then it’s time for a head-to-toe body massage using virgin coconut oil and body butter. The intensity of the therapist’s movements and pressures are further enhanced with the vibrations of the bed and music from the sound dome; an irresistible combination that almost forces you to relax. As you turn over to face downwards, a hot towel is placed on your back and the soothing massage treatment continues with hot river stones placed at all pressure points and massaged into tired muscles. Needless to say, the Rhythm and Motion massage treatment at Rock Spa®, Hard Rock Hotel Bali is one of the most unique and fascinating spa treatments on the island and a definite must-try. Where else can you experience a massage that comes on a vibrating bed and a music dome?! The treatment ends with a cup of hot ginger tea and spa guests are welcomed to make use of the steam room, sauna, cold plunge and whirlpool. To make your bookings and inquiries, please contact Rock Spa at rockspa.bali@hardrockhotels.net. REVIEW

A signature treatment that is a must-try at the DaLa Spa at Alaya Resort Ubud is the “Warm Stone Detox Massage”, a 90-minute treatment using warm river stones anointed with scented oils. The stones are heated, placed on energy centres and then massaged over the body to melt away stress, knots and tension. The use of natural stones as a healing tool is renowned worldwide, as heated stones have been proven to promote a deep state of relaxation and clarity of mind. This treatment is priced at just IDR 550K ++/person at DaLa Spa and begins with a luxuriating feet ritual where the feet and lower legs are bathed in scented water and flower petals, with a tender foot scrub and light foot massage using Spiced Essential Oil, Sliced Lime, Ginger, Lemongrass and Marigold flowers. This is followed by a heavenly head to toe Balinese body massage with long strokes and applications of pressure for deep relaxation using aromatic natural and purifying oil – a gorgeous blend of Sweet Almond Oil, Juniper, Cypress and Peppermint. The best part of the treatment comes next when heated stones are placed at pressure points along the body. Feel the stones’ natural heat travel into your tired muscles and wake up feeling rejuvenated, refreshed and renewed. After the treatment ends, you’re invited to sip on fresh and warm ginger tea in the calming ambience of DaLa Spa’s beautiful lobby that overlooks the jungle and river below. To make your bookings, please visit www.dalaspa.com. Experience this nurturing ritual together as a couple and be entitled to a generous 25% discount. DaLa Spa at Alaya Resort Ubud Jl. Three Decades Of Delicious Dining at Kopi Pot An afternoon or evening at Kopi Pot is like reminiscing on a favourite childhood memory – it is always warm, cozy and welcoming, with friendly and familiar staff who are always ready to welcome you with open arms. Nestled amidst lush flora and fauna, this longstanding family establishment on bustling Jl. Raya Legian has been building its legacy since 1990, when it first opened its doors to hungry travellers worldwide. Cocooned within its own timeless charm, the atmosphere at Kopi Pot belies the tumult outside. The beautiful wood-and-brick building brings to mind Bali from a quieter time. Soaring alang-alang roofs allow for maximum light and air and glowing brass fixtures add to the romance of it all. Dine in the golden sunshine or in the glimmering twilight under fragrant foliage or indoors under beautiful antique lighting. Members of the staff, who have mostly been with the establishment since the grand opening, are always ready to assist. Parwa and Ayu “Stone” – a nickname given by a beloved customer – recall early days when the restaurant was still surrounded by greenery and wide open fields. “I think we were one of the first few restaurants to open here back then,” said Parwa. Despite the constant change that surrounds it, Kopi Pot continues to offer consistently delicious and fresh Balinese, Indonesian and International favourites in a family-friendly setting for an unbeatable dining experience.

REVIEW

The menu at Kopi Pot is a lot like living history; timeless selections that are requested repeatedly by returning customers and enjoyed by countless diners, even celebrities such as Oliver Beerhoff, world-famous footballer. New additions are included yearly. The most popular and longest-standing dish is the Pork Spare Ribs; so juicy, so tender and flavoursome that the meat falls off the bone and melts in your mouth in a plethora of flavours. According to the Chief Cook, Pak Man “Cake” who has been with the company since before Kopi Pot opened; his “secret” is apparently no secret at all, just hours of lovingly marinating and warming it all in foil and slow cooking over a tiny fire. Preparation is everything. The Beef Rendang takes two hours to prepare, and all dishes follow a stringent cooking process with recipes that are approved by the discerning owners using only the freshest local ingredients and Balinese vegetables, herbs and spices. Another favourite is the Spice Crusted Tuna Steak served with teriyaki sauce, ginger, and papaya and capsicum salsa. Another huge hit is the Seafood Platter at just IDR 365,000 for two featuring Grilled Lobsters and King Prawns, Breaded Red Snapper Fillet and Squid Rings. There are dairy-free, gluten-free and vegan and vegetarian selections. All dishes are MSG-free. Newer options include the Citrus and Rocket Salad, Chili Prawn Salad, Beefburger and Cheeseburger, Soto Ayam, Sate Lilit, Ayam Panggang Madu, Bebek Goreng and the Gado-Gado. At the Lone Palm Bar, you’ll find refreshing cocktails made with premium spirits, gourmet coffee and tea that are perfect for freshly-made desserts which remain as irresistible as always.

essential info

General Things

THAT YOU SHOULD OR SHOULDN’T DO...

do

don’t

...change money at a reputable looking location, use your own (or the hotel’s) calculator before changing!

...forget to bring your passport (or a photocopy of your ID) with you at all times-as well as a copy of Bali Plus!

...put on loads of high factor waterproof suncream (especially if you intend to spend a lot of time in the water).

...swim outside designated swimming areas. Currents can be very strong so swim between red and yellow flags.

...drink a lot of bottled water and eat a lot of fresh fruit - do your body a favour.

...do drugs! It could lead to death penalty. Enough foreigners reside in Bali in courtesy of the Govt. prison service!

...try not to step on offerings in the street (walk around them). ...be careful with your belongings at all times. Crime is on the increase and can ruin your holiday. Cases of handbag snatching have been reported so please leave important documents in your hotel safe (carry photocopies) and wear your bag across your shoulders! ...respect the slow pace of processions. If stuck behind one don’t honk your horn! ...haggle when buying (except on price-tagged goods). ...buy ‘lmmodium’ to relieve bouts of Bali belly.

...touch people’s heads - it is very offensive to Hindus. ...enter a temple during menstruation. Sorry ladies! ...forget to add salt to your food and to drink lots of water-you probably sweat more here than at home. ...worry too much about the ice - it’s government quality controlled in established bars and restaurants. ...forget to look and listen while crossing the road. Cars may stop, motorbikes may not! ...forget to reconfirm your flight 72 hours prior to flying.

...have a great holiday! 98

A Word of Advice ATTENDING CEREMONIES:

Remember these are serious occasions and should be treated as such. Religious guidelines: • Always wear a sarong and sash. • Do not walk in front of people that are praying. • Do not use a flash camera or point your camera into the priest’s face! • Never sit higher than the priest or the offerings. • At cremations, do not get in the way of the attendees - however important that photographic opportunity is! • Women are not allowed to enter temples during menstruation. N.B. When attending Special Ceremonies or Anniversary Celebrations as a guest or onloocker, small donations are gratefully received. Your donation will help in paying for the offerings, and upkeep of the temple.

DANGEROUS SPORTS:

Make sure you either have personal insurance or travel insurance that will cover any accident.

DRIVING:

In Bali, always expect the unexpected, always keep your eyes open and your mind on driving. Beware of motorbikes! It is best to rent a car with full insurance as this will save time and money if you are involved in an accident. You must use a helmet at all times and have a valid license.

MONEY CHANGERS:

Be very careful when changing your money. Always check the rate of exchange and commission (if any). Most importantly, always count your money before you leave the premises and, if you can, bring your own calculator as the ones used by some places can be a little ‘inaccurate’.

PETTY CRIME:

There have been a few cases of handbags being snatched after tourists have cashed money at Banks or Money Changers! Put your money away in your ‘burn-bag’ or hold onto your hand bag tightly! When changing large amounts of money please check each note carefully as there are a number of (noticeably) fake notes in circulation. When trying on garments do not take your jewellery off and leave it lying around - give it to a friend or leave it in the hotel safe. When at a spa - use the jewellery box or locker provided for jewellery.

SWIMMING IN THE SEA:

Currents and undertows can be strong. Always swim between the red and yellow flags and don’t swim too far out! Please, do not leave your belongings unattended on the beach.

Thank you for respecting these suggestions.
