MADE IN INDONESIA ‘Om Swastiastu...’ Indonesia is a land in the Far East where the sun shines brightly almost all year long, and is home to much cultural diversity. And to say that it is rich with natural beauty is surely an understatement – from hidden pristine beaches to hectares of rice fields, from lush jungles to massive lakes, from various sea creatures to the top of the mountains higher than the clouds. Not to mention the history that goes all the way back to the glorious kingdoms of hundreds, if not thousands, of years ago. There are a lot of reasons for tourists and travelers to fall in love with Indonesia – one of them being the friendly local people with their great sense for art, which you can see in their traditional fabrics and costumes like Batik, Songket, and Kebaya. Flip through our

‘CRAFT & CULTURE’ to see the history of these textiles and costumes, and how they have now become a part of our modern lives. A photo collection by Made Yudistira in ‘FOTO FOLIO’ will also take you to see a number of traditional dances with intricate costumes and makeup. In this issue we will take you exploring for all that is truly Indonesian in Ubud as well. Get pampered with Manis Klepon, a signature treatment at the DaLa Spa in the Alaya Resort Ubud, which is inspired by klepon, an Indonesian traditional snack – find out all about it in ‘INVITE & INDULGE.’ Stay at the newly opened Mandapa, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve that will let you absorb the positive atmosphere of the lush greenery and also let you learn about the Balinese rice culture, which we reveal in ‘REST & RELAXATION.’ When you are visiting Jakarta, don’t forget to catch a performance by Wayang Orang Bharata, a Javanese human puppet show that our contributor Agi R. Andante shares in ‘CAPITAL CORNER.’ And if you are looking for more untouched beaches in Indonesia, head to the Selayar Islands that lie south of South Sulawesi – find out about our adventure in this pristine paradise in ‘BEYOND BALI.’ So, we wish you happy times while discovering all that is unique in this archipelago and, of course, welcome to Indonesia! ‘Om Shanti Shanti Shanti Om…’ The Team

we already sold accessories for cell phones, we thought why not combine these two ideas: making accessories for gadgets with Indonesian designs. BB: What happened after you made that business plan? BG: Our lecturer enrolled us in Entrepreneurstar 2012, a competition by SBM Institut Teknologi Bandung. We won second place and used the prize money for research and to perfect our products. Then we did a market test on the internet, and surprisingly customers loved our products.

Communication Design. That’s when we first looked for talented designers in many forums and communities from all parts of Indonesia, like Yogyakarta, Jakarta, Bandung, and elsewhere. Sometimes, we also went to art exhibitions to see if there were any talented designers we could work with. BB: What are your visions in running this business? BG: We want Batik to become a part of the urban lifestyle – and of course, cell phones are a big part of modern life. We hope with Batik Geek, batik and other Indonesian art will always be in our customer’s hands. BB: To all young entrepreneurs who are interested in a creative business, what would you say? BG: Indonesia is rich with diverse cultural heritage that we can explore and mold into a business. The most important part is to start with what you like so that you can enjoy every part of the process. And of course, start now before anyone else “steals” your opportunity. BB: Are you planning on making more than phone casings? BG: For now we only offer bamboo phone casings, but we are currently brainstorming for other products that probably will be launched by end of this year or early next year. BB: Where can we find Batik Geek? BG: We are available at several online shops like Zalora, Lazada, Shopedeca, and more, and of course you can contact us via WhatsApp or text messages. You can also come to our store, or follow us at exhibitions in Jakarta and Bandung. As for outside Indonesia, we have exported our products to Germany, Canada, Holland, Switzerland, England, Korea, Japan, and more. By Risty Nurraisa Batik Geek Komp. Yet all the time I’m thinking, “Where to next?” The taproot seemed never to be strong enough to hold me in that particular place’s soil, and now it is time to test Indonesia to see if she will take me into her heart. I’m often asked, “Why Indonesia?” These days I simply answer, “Semua bisa diatur” – which translates

how long I stay here I will always be a foreigner, but not necessarily an outsider. The spirit of giving and acceptance must be part of the nation’s collective DNA, as I encounter such genuine hospitality and generosity of spirit wherever I go. The majority of my life to date has been spent in countries where its citizen’s worship at that alter of ambition whose goals are the pursuit of money, power, and status, and beware of those who happen to get in the way. Age is not revered in the way it is in Indonesia. In the ‘west,’ the old and the infirm become an irritant to be stashed away in soulless institutions with dishonest names like ‘Tranquility Gardens’ or ‘Peaceful Meadows.’ There the aged will live out their twilight years surrounded only by those as ancient as they are, bereft of family.

MAYA UBUD

When I first arrived in Indonesia, I used to walk the streets of my neighborhood and cries of “Pagi, Papa!” would greet me from doorways and windows. I was a little taken aback at the audaciousness of those who would glibly refer to my age. Now I know that it is a term of respect as I supposedly have an abundance of wisdom and now I wear that particular salutation like a badge of honor. Here, old people are cool…. I think! It’s easy for a newly arrived resident to don a pair of rose-colored glasses and gaze through those tinted lenses at this strange new world, seeing only the things they want to see. It’s not ‘perfect’ here to be sure, as no place anywhere can attain that lofty status. I battle with the learning of a new language, I struggle to make sense of what should be simple, straightforward paperwork, and along the way I learn to have infinite patience. Should I stumble when confronted with what seems to be an insurmountable problem, a few locals will gather, then a few more, and a long chat will ensue. And with smiles all around, they will look at me and say, “Don’t worry. Semua bisa diatur.” I do so love it here! By Paul V. Walters

the 16th century as a defence against the armed colonists who were suppressing them. By the end of the 19th century, slavery was banned in Brazil and things started to go down. Capoeira began to be misused for crime, as a lot of Capoeiristas were hired as hitmen and bodyguards for the warlords. In fact, a group of Capoeiristas raided the city of Rio de Janeiro, which eventually resulted in Capoeira being prohibited in the whole country in the 1890’s. But by 1920, Capoeira started to make its way back, and since 1970 Capoeira mestres began to preserve this cultural heritage. Now Capoeira attracts foreign students and tourists to Brazil, and renowned Capoeira mestres even teach this martial art abroad and establish their own schools. Known for its acrobatic and complex movements, as well as an unpredictable pattern of kicks, spins, and other techniques, Capoeira was acknowledged as one of the world’s Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2014 by UNESCO.

A BEAUTIFUL SYNERGY The good news is that Capoeira classes are now available in many areas of Bali – in Ubud, Seminyak, Jimbaran, and Sanur. If you want to burn all those calories from the extensive food and beer you have consumed, Capoeira is what you should be doing at the end of your day, as classes are normally conducted in the evening.

PRESERVING ART It was a night to remember as the Le Meridien Bali Jimbaran hosted its “PreservARTion” charity night in support of preserving Balinese cultural heritage with the maestro of Balinese dance, Ida Bagus Blangsinga, as the main star of the event. Guests were also invited to witness a live painting show by Ponco Setyohadi and a fashion show by APPMI, while indulging in some delectable dishes courtesy of Penelope Williams, Mandif Warokka, Rahung Nasution, and the hotel’s Executive Chef Justin Wong. www.lemeridienbalijimbaran.com

A HOLY CEREMONY On a beautiful Saturday morning, the Plataran Ubud Hotel & Spa held a sacred Melaspas ceremony by the property’s rice fields. Melaspas is a traditional Balinese ceremony to clean and purify a new building site or land from negative elements, as well as to bring prosperity and wealth. This ceremony felt even more sacred with a number of holy performances, one of them being Rejang Dewa, a sacred dance to the Gods. www.plataran.com

Grand Nikko Bali shared some love by inviting hotel guests to join in a sea turtle release, not just once, but twice in August as there were two sea turtles that laid eggs on the hotel’s white sand beach. Call an ambulance by dialing 118, but it is a lot more practical and quicker to hire a taxi. Most hotels have on-call doctors on standby. For “Bali Belly”, Lomotil and Imodium eliminate symptoms, but not gastro-related infections. A fever along with symptoms requires doctor-prescribed antibiotics. Drink as much liquid as possible. Isotonic drinks under various brand names are widely available and are known to replenish body hydration and replace fluids. For discomfort, diarrhea and cramping, drink strong, hot tea; avoid fruits and spicy foods. Some day-biting mosquitoes carry dengue fever, but this is not a problem in tourist areas. Bali is non-malarial and prophylaxis is not required. Mosquito bites, cuts or abrasions easily become infected in the tropics. Treat them immediately. Drink only bottled or boiled water. Peel fruit before eating; avoid raw vegetables except at reputable restaurants. Ice in restaurants is safe. Protect yourself from the intense equatorial sun. Use high SPF sunblock and a hat. AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases are increasing in Indonesia. Local sex workers have multiple partners from around the world. They are not checked for sexually transmitted diseases. Act responsibly and use condoms, available over the counter at pharmacies.
