TEAMTALK

LOVE IS IN THE AIR ‘Om Swastiastu...’ A romantic paradise – that is probably what Bali is most famous for. Although some parts of the island have undergone massive development in the last couple of years, Bali still has a lot of secluded places, tucked away in its lush jungles and nestled by its pristine beaches. This island also offers such a positive atmosphere, which has couples, especially newly-weds, feeling that this paradise is theirs alone. Staying at the newly opened Padma Resort Ubud in Puhu Village will make you forget about the rest of the world for sure – read all about it in ‘REST & RELAXATION.’ A treatment at the Villa Retreats in the InterContinental Resort Bali is also amazing when

Bali is very popular as a wedding destination, and that’s why the wedding industry on the island needs to keep up its game. Ria Kentjono in ‘PROFILE & PORTRAIT’ shares her dream to elevate the quality of wedding organizers and planners in Bali by opening The Wedding Academy. As for wedding couples that are looking for a talented team to capture their wedding day, AXIOO is definitely the one – check out their stunning photo collection in ‘FOTO FOLIO.’ This November, don’t forget to give a surprise to your loved one. The ‘LIFESTYLE & LEISURE’ section reveals a special class at Utama Spice where you can create natural beauty products to revive your romance, while ‘DINE & DELIGHTS’ might inspire you to have a romantic fine dining experience at Il Ristorante at the Bulgari Resort Bali. One last tip…your quality time with your loved one will surely be much better if you turn off all of your gadgets – except for your camera – so that your romantic moments in Bali will forever be engraved in your memory… ‘Om Shanti Shanti Shanti Om…’ The Team

SOUL PURIFICATION EXPERIENCING ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT BALINESE CEREMONIES BY THE BEACH AT THE RITZ-CARLTON, BALI…

20

BALI&BEYOND NOVEMBER 2015

This purifying ceremony is conducted by a local priest and takes place by the beach early on an auspicious day

T

he Balinese, being one of the most spiritual groups of people in the world, have many sacred ceremonies, one of which

is Melukat. Derived from lukat, which means purify, Melukat aims to cleanse the mind, body and soul. This ceremony is mostly held after bad things happened to someone, like they got sick, had been in an accident, or simply feel restless. Melukat is believed to help get rid of the bad energy that might be lingering around that person. This ceremony usually takes place by a spring, a river, or by the sea, as the Balinese strongly believe that water is the most powerful means with which to restore and purify your energy. One of the top destinations for a Melukat ceremony is the Tirtha Empul Temple in Tampak Siring, which is located next to the Tampak Siring Palace. This spring has a number of showers that are named according to the beliefs of the local culture, and is almost always packed by devoted local people who would like to perform Melukat.

THE FIVE PRAYERS Melukat is actually a pretty simple ceremony where a Balinese priest, also called a Pemangku, will bless you and make the offerings. This ceremony is believed to protect a person from the attack of negative forces or demonic inuences, and uses holy water as the main medium – which is infused with owers,

a prayer dedicated to Sang Hyang Samudaya, and the last one is dedicated once again to Sang Hyang Widhi as thanks for the blessing. At the end of the ceremony, the Pemangku will tie a bracelet made of tricolor string called a benang tridatu around your wrist. The red, white, and black colored string represents the Hindu Trinity Gods (Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva), and symbolizes one’s quest for balance, harmony, and understanding. The Balinese also believe that this string will protect one from bad energy as you are under the constant protection of the Gods. One more thing to note, don’t take off the leaves, rice, and incense and

Sometimes mineral water is also used for this blessing. The ceremony begins with the

to say the view was such a feast to my eyes. From the lush forests surrounding the ancient Hindu village of Taro, the Oos Ulu Luh and Oos Ulu Muani Rivers and on to the rice terraces, flying high up in the sky gave me the chance to discover this natural beauty from a whole different perspective. The clear blue sky was accentuated by the picturesque view of Mount Batur as we approached the Global Geopark. It was such a beautiful day for a sky tour indeed! The journey was even more adventurous as the helicopter descended a little bit, then ascended the mountain slope, from the bottom all the way up to the top. The Captain made several great maneuvers, which were welcomed by our “oohs!” and “aahs!” as he circled Mount Batur and its two calderas – I almost thought I heard John Fogerty singing “Fortunate Son.” The trip back to the Elephant Safari Park & Lodge once again revealed the breath-taking natural beauty from a different angle. And as we landed at the heliport, our beaming smiles spoke for themselves – it was without a doubt the most exciting 30 minutes of flight ever in my life! PAINT THE FUTURE Café Piazza at the Bali Dynasty Resort proudly showcases the artwork of I Wayan Lias, a talented Balinese artist from Cegi Village. 15 paintings will be displayed at the exhibition, each capturing Balinese local heritage with Balinese temples as the artist’s main focus. Call an ambulance by dialing 118, but it is a lot more practical and quicker to hire a taxi. Most hotels have on-call doctors on standby. For “Bali Belly”, Lomotil and Imodium eliminate symptoms, but not gastro-related infections. A fever along with symptoms requires doctor-prescribed antibiotics. Drink as much liquid as possible. Isotonic drinks under various brand names are widely available and are known to replenish body hydration and replace fluids. For discomfort, diarrhea and cramping, drink strong, hot tea; avoid fruits and spicy foods. Some day-biting mosquitoes carry dengue fever, but this is not a problem in tourist areas. Bali is non-malarial and prophylaxis is not required. Mosquito bites, cuts or abrasions easily become infected in the tropics. Treat them immediately. Drink only bottled or boiled water. Peel fruit before eating; avoid raw vegetables except at reputable restaurants. Ice in restaurants is safe. Protect yourself from the intense equatorial sun. Use high SPF sunblock and a hat. AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases are increasing in Indonesia. Local sex workers have multiple partners from around the world. They are not checked for sexually transmitted diseases. Act responsibly and use condoms, available over the counter at pharmacies.
