BEAUTIFUL STRANGER The first time that you see him you spot him from afar. But you’ve been weaving in and out of the Seminyak shops all day and you are distracted, with both hands full of shopping bags. You hope to run into him again and sure enough, the next day you spot him at a café looking confident and carefree. He is clad in casual beachwear that hangs loosely from his body but shows off the best parts (those sculpted arms!). Your gaze moves up and suddenly you realize you have locked eyes. He flashes you a knowing smile and you return it, albeit bashfully from being found out. Fast forward and you are face to face at a table under a stunning chandelier. He is looking deep into your eyes from across the table. What’s in store for the future? It’s a secret that only you two know.

The intro course starts out with the very basics and by the end participants produce their own hand blown glass paperweights. Horizon also welcomes the public to drop in and watch, as glass blowing is a fascinating process to observe. At the time of this writing Seivertson was in the midst of collaborating with Roy Gonzalez, counterculture surf artist, to produce one-of-a-kind glass Graal works (‘Holy Grail’ in French). Seivertson uses a rare formula of enamels that tolerate hot glass being layered and stretched as the piece is being blown. The resulting piece encases the paint inside the glass forever. Painting highly detailed Graals is a tedious process that

Dieng means “Abode of the Gods” and this region carries an air of mysticism and spiritual power. A small collection of 9th century Hindu shrines dominate the stunning landscape, and many are situated close to the bubbling sulphur-rich Telaga Warna. This colored lake exudes an odorous sulphur smell and the landscape surrounding it is dotted with 100300 meter ash cones, creating an eerie, surreal scene. Do you like old trains? ave you ever looked at a gigantic, glorious painting in a lavish five-star hotel and wondered

who the painter might be? Wouldn’t you imagine them to be a wellestablished artist living in some artsy loft apartment, holding a cocktail in one hand and fanning themselves with exhibition invitations with the other? In Jakarta this would not so much be the case, as some of the

finest local craftsmen are actually gathered at the Ancol Art Market, better known as Pasar Seni. This market is operated by a state-owned enterprise that runs the 552-hectare tourist area called Taman Impian Jaya Ancol. For many curators this is where the city’s most intriguing pieces can be discovered, but for the 96 artists who work at Pasar Seni, it is merely their humble work place. Call an ambulance by dialing 118, but it is a lot more practical and quicker to hire a taxi. Most hotels have on-call doctors on standby. For “Bali Belly”, Lomotil and Imodium eliminate symptoms, but not gastro-related infections. A fever along with symptoms requires doctor-prescribed antibiotics. Drink as much liquid as possible. Isotonic drinks under various brand names are widely available and are known to replenish body hydration and replace fluids. For discomfort, diarrhea and cramping, drink strong, hot tea; avoid fruits and spicy foods. Some day-biting mosquitoes carry dengue fever, but this is not a problem in tourist areas. Bali is non-malarial and prophylaxis is not required. Mosquito bites, cuts or abrasions easily become infected in the tropics. Treat them immediately. Drink only bottled or boiled water. Peel fruit before eating; avoid raw vegetables except at reputable restaurants. Ice in restaurants is safe. Protect yourself from the intense equatorial sun. Use high SPF sunblock and a hat. AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases are increasing in Indonesia. Local sex workers have multiple partners from around the world. They are not checked for sexually transmitted diseases. Act responsibly and use condoms, available over the counter at pharmacies.
