SWEET TREATS ‘Om Swastiastu...’

February is often considered the month of love where people go the extra mile to present a thoughtful gift to their loved ones. You may surprise your special someone with a romantic getaway or prepare a dinner for your parents and create a box of sweet treats for your best friends. But there is one person that you tend to forget to love, and that person is… yourself. Therefore, this month we want to invite you to spoil

yourself. After all, how can you love others if you don’t first love yourself? You can start by finding your inner peace at Alaya Resort Jembawan. Located in Ubud, the new addition of Alaya Hotels & Resorts is a healing retreat that will help balance your mind, body and soul with healthy foods and meditation sessions. Flip through our ‘Rest & Relaxation’ to find out more about it. Quila at Alila Villas Uluwatu will also make you forget about the world with its dishes that play with your five senses – read on ‘Dine & Delights’ to discover its unique dining experience. Another option to pamper yourself is to take a treatment at Maria Curau, a beauty place in Pererenan that we reveal in ‘Invite & Indulge’. You can also craft your own perfume at L’Atelier Parfums et Créations at The Ritz-Carlton, Bali in Nusa Dua like our contributor Meliana Salim did to celebrate her 10th anniversary of living in Bali. She shares all about it in ‘Little Loves’. All in all, we hope that all the stories we have compiled for you will help you find balance so you can share your positive energy with the people surround you. Happy reading!

inspired dishes, all are created to attract the guests’ five senses. For example, during my dinner at Quila, a waiter handed me a sea shell and asked me to put it on one of my ears to hear the sound of rolling waves. At the same time, the waiter also covered my eyes with a cloth. He said, “Just focus on what you hear through that shell.” from my eyes and, like magic, a seafood dish was already served on my table. The presentation of this dish was such a feast to my eyes as well – the seafood was presented on a wooden box filled with a sea stone decoration inside and covered with a glass. The seafood, which was a cray fish and burrata, was placed right on the glass cover. How amazing is that? Sound, texture, presentation and aroma – Quila successfully combines

When we first opened Bali Buda, there was virtually nothing available in the way of organic produce. I had to seek out small family farmers and I started buying produce from them. I’m sensing a pattern here. “I don’t have passion in perfume,” Nora claimed. “I have passion in scents. My husband has a better sense of smell but I am better at blending and training.” Based on the two categories, Nora guided me through the art of perfumery and some of the 44 fragrance notes — a combination of natural and synthetic aromatics, 80 percent of which are sourced in Indonesia.

During the following hour and a half, I carefully smelled, squeezed and selected the notes, adding and subtracting numbers and creating various combinations that would lead to three different perfume testers. The possibilities are infinite. I could do Nora Gasparini.

Call an ambulance by dialing 118, but it is a lot more practical and quicker to hire a taxi. Most hotels have on-call doctors on standby. For “Bali Belly”, Lomotil and Imodium eliminate symptoms, but not gastro-related infections. A fever along with symptoms requires doctor-prescribed antibiotics. Drink as much liquid as possible. Isotonic drinks under various brand names are widely available and are known to replenish body hydration and replace fluids. For discomfort, diarrhea and cramping, drink strong, hot tea; avoid fruits and spicy foods. Some day-biting mosquitoes carry dengue fever, but this is not a problem in tourist areas. Bali is non-malarial and prophylaxis is not required. Mosquito bites, cuts or abrasions easily become infected in the tropics. Treat them immediately. Drink only bottled or boiled water. Peel fruit before eating; avoid raw vegetables except at reputable restaurants. Ice in restaurants is safe. Protect yourself from the intense equatorial sun. Use high SPF sunblock and a hat. AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases are increasing in Indonesia. Local sex workers have multiple partners from around the world. They are not checked for sexually transmitted diseases. Act responsibly and use condoms, available over the counter at pharmacies.
