A sumptuous broth is painstakingly prepared with Japanese style katsuobushi or skipjack tuna that has gone through a lengthy process of drying, fermenting and smoking. In the hands of Chef Mandif, it is transformed into a delectable delicacy that evokes nostalgia and provokes interest. ‘BLACK & WHITE’ BALI We are inundated nowadays with highly color saturated digitally enhanced imagery across all forms of media. The Internet, TV, movies and commercial photography boast true color, high definition, and digital realism. Ironically however, some of the most iconic and powerful images in photography are black and white, taken with film technology and with no digital enhancement or Photoshop adjustments whatsoever. Brazilian Sabastiao Salgado is recognized as one of the most admired photographers in the last 30 years for his documentary photography, shot exclusively in black and white. He has only recently switched from film to digital, with his images very evocative and made even more so by the simplicity of black and white. Ansel Adams, who is considered the original master of landscape photography, shot with black and white film only. Please enjoy the following images of Bali through the beauty of ‘black and white’. Most of these photos were taken in the past year at the Bali Arts Festival, Melasti ceremonies and village festivals. By Phil Green Photos by Phil Green (baliphotoblog.smugmug.com)

With a harmonious melody from the traditional musical instruments playing in the background, all the invitees were then directed to the jetty where the installation of the statue would commence. Standing at the end of the jetty I could see the mermaid statue that would soon be an artificial reef already floating out on the water – it was to be lowered approximately 300 meters northeastward of the resort’s jetty. ARTSY CONSERVATION “Conservation through Art” aims at preserving and developing the marine ecosystem surrounding the Grand Luley Resort Manado. A mermaid statue weighing 1.2 tons and standing 1.9 meters tall created by a prolific Balinese sculptor Mr. Wayan Winten was to be installed offshore of the resort as part of the program.

WALL DIVES After our first dive of about 38 minutes, we were off to Bunaken dive in Likuan II, our last destination. In less than 25 minutes, we had reached our diving spot. We were once again fortunate as the visibility in Likuan II was even better than our first dive – thick clusters of vertical wall covered by both hard and soft coral was our view. Call an ambulance by dialing 118, but it is a lot more practical and quicker to hire a taxi. Most hotels have on-call doctors on standby. For “Bali Belly”, Lomotil and Imodium eliminate symptoms, but not gastro-related infections. A fever along with symptoms requires doctor-prescribed antibiotics. Drink as much liquid as possible. Isotonic drinks under various brand names are widely available and are known to replenish body hydration and replace fluids. For discomfort, diarrhea and cramping, drink strong, hot tea; avoid fruits and spicy foods. Some day-biting mosquitoes carry dengue fever, but this is not a problem in tourist areas. Bali is non-malarial and prophylaxis is not required. Mosquito bites, cuts or abrasions easily become infected in the tropics. Treat them immediately. Drink only bottled or boiled water. Peel fruit before eating; avoid raw vegetables except at reputable restaurants. Ice in restaurants is safe. Protect yourself from the intense equatorial sun. Use high SPF sunblock and a hat. AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases are increasing in Indonesia. Local sex workers have multiple partners from around the world. They are not checked for sexually transmitted diseases. Act responsibly and use condoms, available over the counter at pharmacies.
