FACTS ABOUT TRI HITA KARANA • Most resorts in Bali use Tri Hita Karana as their business philosophy. •In 2013, the former president of Indonesia Mr. Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono suggested that APEC adopt the Balinese philosophy of Tri Hita Karana in order to achieve sustainable and equitable economic development, one of the three main pillars for development in APEC. • UNESCO stated that the subak system (water irrigation system for farming in Bali) reflects the Tri Hita Karana concept, which has enabled the Balinese to become the most prolific rice growers in the archipelago despite the challenge of supporting a dense population. The materials used in creating these wonderful papers come from 100 per cent post consumer recycled paper collected from schools, offices, hotels and homes around the island, and colored with natural dyes from earth, roots, and leaves. For texturizing the paper, they use sustainable plant fibers such as bamboo and flower petals. Another highlight in creating the paper is the fact that even the tools they use are hand crafted and sourced from around Indonesia. One of my favorites comes from their line called Leather, which is a journal featuring parchment-like paper inside and bound with soft stitched leather on the outside. Saraswati Papers also offers other ranges of products from recycled paper sheets, photo frames, greeting cards, and even customized designs for weddings and corporate needs. RG: As we are talking now, my family actually has a meeting with NBC Universal Manila to talk about where we are in our lives. But the beach needs hundreds of rubbish collectors employed as more trash reappears again in the afternoon hours, washed in with the surf. At this time of day, there’s hardly any afternoon clean-up activity evident – apart from a handful of beach sellers and lifeguards taking it upon themselves to do so, as this can greatly affect their daily livelihood. Instead, some afternoons the plastic and general rubbish still lurks on the shoreline, ready for when everyone flocks down for Kuta Beach’s legendary sunset. Even if it all seems like a hopeless task, arguably there should be better organization to manage all the reappearing debris after the morning shift, even just showing to beachgoers that an effort is being made. It is down to everyone, including local authorities, the government, litter louts on surrounding islands, visitors, locals, manufacturers of plastic containers and resident businesses to all help turn around what is essentially a global environmental problem. Visitors can be quite incredulous about the rubbish accumulated on one of the world’s most iconic beaches, but perhaps they too can do their bit and set a good example, from taking away cigarette butts and rubbish off the beach to substituting re-useable cloth bags for plastic while out shopping – everyone’s plastic bags, straws and bottles can end up in the sea – to helping organize regular local beach clean-ups. This is one of the world’s favourite holiday islands and needs to be kept that way – even Bali Governor Pastika was recently moved to urge locals, ‘’Guard the Island’s cleanliness and manage waste,’’ and imploring, “Let’s fix these things, because we live from tourism.’’ By Katie Truman

t was that time of the year again as the Jakarta International Java Jazz Festival, one of the biggest jazz festivals in the world, attracted thousands of music enthusiasts. Held

on the ﬁrst weekend of March as usual, this festival started its journey back in 2005 at the Jakarta Convention Centre with almost 50,000 visitors. Each year, more and more musicians are invited to perform, and not just from the jazz genre. The numbers of visitors also grew bigger and bigger, until ﬁnally in 2010 the festival had to be held at the Jakarta International Expo in Kemayoran, one of the largest spaces for events in Jakarta. This year’s Java Jazz Festival had more than 10 stages for all the music stars.

WORLD-CLASS PERFORMERS This festival has already hosted some of the biggest names in the music industry, such as Stevie Wonder, Jamie Cullum, Toni Braxton, and Natalie Cole. This year more top stars added their names to the festival, as around 55 international performers hit the stage including Jessie J, Incognito, Christina Perri, Chris Botti, and Lisa Ono. Give or take there were almost 90 local musicians playing at the festival, including Benny Likumahuwa, Gilang Ramadhan, and one of Indonesia’s younger singers, Tulus. Peel fruit before eating; avoid raw vegetables except at reputable restaurants. Ice in restaurants is safe. Protect yourself from the intense equatorial sun. Use high SPF sunblock and a hat. AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases are increasing in Indonesia. Local sex workers have multiple partners from around the world. They are not checked for sexually transmitted diseases. Act responsibly and use condoms, available over the counter at pharmacies.
