WORLD BOOK DAY It is World Book Day on Thursday 6th March 2014. £1 book vouchers will be given out to every pupil in School to buy selected free books or as a voucher towards any book from participating bookstores. Look out for competitions, quizzes and craft sessions in the Library to celebrate this event. Something else to celebrate – former pupil Alex T Smith has been chosen as this year’s illustrator for World Book Day. Alex is no stranger to Bablake -he visited School recently to promote his series of books on the character ‘Claude ‘and was actively involved in last year’s Coventry Book Festival.

Book Worm CHESS This continues to be a popular pastime in the Library. Much to the joy of all, a superb hand crafted set has been donated to the Library by the widow of Frank Lovell, a lifelong chess enthusiast and supporter of the Coventry Schools’ Chess League.

SCHOLASTIC BOOK FAIR The Library hosted a Scholastic Book Fair from 11th to 15th November to coincide with Reading Week. This is an annual event and this year’s Fair was extremely well supported. We had record sales this year, selling in excess of £700 worth of books and stationery. Commission on these sales resulted in £350 worth of books for the Library. Well done everyone!

50TH ANNIVERSARY OF DR WHO To celebrate this prestigious occasion for Science Fiction lovers everywhere, we ran a Dr Who competition open to Shells, 2nd and 3rd Years. The display was very eye catching, thanks to the artistic skills of Ms Daley who created a Tardis post box for entries! The winning entry was submitted by Zahrah Jahangir in Shell G who received a £10 book token. Congratulations!

KINDLES Some exciting news! The Parent’s Association have kindly donated 25 Kindles to the Library. We are currently busy setting up the Kindles, with a view to class use in the near future. Watch this space ….

COVENTRY BOOK FESTIVAL The Summer Term proved to be a busy time. In addition to our annual author visits for Shells and 2nd Years, we supported Coventry Literally Festival. We welcomed author Alex Gutteridge to School. She spoke to our 3rd Years and pupils from schools across the city, including a group from Bablake Junior School about her new book ‘Last Chance Angel’. You may remember it was a time of heavy downpours of rain and a leaky theatre roof, but in true Bablake tradition the event was a great success, despite a few stressful moments! AUTHOR VISITS At the end of the Summer Term 2013 we were thrilled to welcome back award winning author Julia Golding to speak to Shells. She held the audience captive with an interactive talk including many props, encouraging pupils to ‘get into character’ by dressing up as pirates and such like! Mark Walden, again an award winning author and former Bablake pupil, similarly entertained 2nd Years with his H.I.V.E series of books, with tales of espionage set in a School. He assured them it was not based on Bablake although he had drawn character traits from some of the teachers and pupils he remembered!! It was wonderful to see their books ‘come alive’ through their presentations. Both talks were followed by a book signing allowing pupils to purchase books they had heard about first hand. BOX TOPS FOR BOOKS Please continue to collect these tokens from Nestle cereal boxes until the closing date on 31st March 2014. This is the last year of the scheme, so thank you all, Staff and pupils, for collecting over the years. We will again award a tin of chocolates to the Form donating the most tokens! CONTACT DETAILS
