his year we hand over our largest ever Year 6 contingent to the Senior School. All of them have left their mark on our school. We will fondly remember this Year 6 and their character and their achievements. We have shared many an enriching moment and they leave us ready for the next stage of their lives. Ready for the next stage of their lives too are Mrs Reed and Mr Bogyor, two members of staff who have brought so much positive energy to Bablake. They chose to spend most of their working lives at our school and we are blessed to have shared the experience.Their wise council and unstinting loyalty will be keenly missed. Someone once said that the, “Best time to start

thinking about your retirement is before the boss does.” I was actually hoping that they would never leave us. As everyone moves on they can reflect upon a job well done. Whatever stage of life we are at, our attitudes will help shape our future and Bablake is a fantastic place to hone those attitudes. Positivity, hard work, compassion, resilience and intellectual curiosity - all within a co-operative and supportive community. That is why, for us all, Bablake is such a great place to be. Our shared aspirations add great energy to our endeavours. As we ‘Seize the Day,’ we seize our futures. Mr Neil Price Headmaster

Rhyming Fun

in the Sun

Year 1 pupils have been looking at traditional rhymes and poems this term. Here they are enjoying the sunshine, rehearsing and performing their own versions of ‘A Sailor went to sea’!

Year 1 Open Morning Year 1 parents and grandparents joined pupils in their classrooms earlier this term for a very special open morning. The children had a wonderful time showing their families the amazing work they have completed so far this year.

A Roar-ing Term in Reception Reception have had the most exciting term with so many different topics and activities. Everyone has fully engaged in all areas. We have been incredibly diverse with constructions, designs, building, transforming and role play. Our Cave, which was used by our Reception Cave People and home to our very own ‘Roara The Receptasaurus’ – a real smoke breathing dinosaur, was

transformed into ‘Grand Central Tunnel’ to house our Steam Train with smoking chimney! The children then became very efficient train drivers and conductors.

During these activities, the children have learned how to work as a team, sharing ideas and discussing outcomes.

Easter Assembly

The role play has been fantastic and the children have been able to demonstrate how much they have learned and understood.

A big thank you to Rev. Slavic for delivering two very special Easter Assemblies at BJS and the PP. He told us all about the different ways Easter is celebrated in different countries and why it is an important time of year for Christians.

The children work very hard all week and each Friday they are rewarded with the ‘Fabulous Friday Treat’.What better way to cool off than with an ice-cold tip-top? In this final addition of Simba this academic year, the staff would like to thank the children for all their hard work this term and wish them the very best in Year 1.

500 Words Success for Pre Prep Pupils A huge well done to Year 2 pupils Rizwaan and Karan who made it through the first round of the BBC Radio 2 500 Word competition with their fantastic stories. With only 5,000 out of 131,798 entries going through to the second round this is an amazing achievement. Well done to both Rizwaan and Karan!

Blue Peter Badge for Pre Prep Pupil Zac

Pre Prep pupil Zac has recently been awarded a Blue Peter Badge after writing to them about his trip to ThinkTank. Zac submitted pictures of his trip to the museum and wrote a few words to describe each, his mum then wrote a transcript of his explanations and they sent everything off to Blue Peter.

Bee Keeping Lesson from Lyla

A big thank you and well done to Year 1 pupil Lyla who taught her class all about beekeeping during ‘show and tell’ this term. Lyla’s Grandad keeps bees as a hobby and Lyla helps him. She did a fantastic job explaining about the bees and the hive, as well as dressing up in her very own beekeeper’s suit to show the children. Great job Lyla!

Year 1 History Trip to the

Black Country Living Museum

When Zac received a letter in the post from the editor of Blue Peter he was over the moon. Not only was he awarded a Blue Peter Badge, which we’re sure he will treasure forever, he also received a Blue Peter Badge Card which means he can get into over 200 Blue Peter Badge Attractions for free.Well done Zac!

Year 1 pupils were delighted to visit the Black Country Living Museum earlier this term.

If parents or pupils are interested in how Blue Peter badges are awarded you can find out more on the Blue Peter website.

Children experienced ‘Life in the Laundry’, and learned that it took an entire day to do the washing! They smelled the carbolic soap; worked on the dirty washing with the dolly peg in the dolly tub, used muscles they did not know existed on the mangle and pegged out the clothes to dry. Don’t be afraid to ask for their help in future parents, they were all great at the pegging out!

ThinkTank Fun for Year 2 Year 2 had a fun filled day at the ThinkTank Science museum in Birmingham this term. Lots of hands-on investigating took place and many enquiring minds were engaged by the fabulous activities on offer. Once again Year 2 made us proud with their impeccable behaviour.

They have been learning all about ‘Houses and Homes’ and how our homes compare to those during the Victorian era. As always the Black Country Living Museum did not fail to deliver, providing the children with sights and smells straight from the 1800s.

1P had a great time getting to grips with the Victorian toys. Hobby horses, skipping ropes and whip and tops all had great use. 1R learned about twists of tea, a penny worth of sweets and two pounds of butter. The children found it hard to believe that boys and girls of this era would have rarely eaten sweets. Liquorice sticks were also introduced to the children, although there wasn’t much interest in chewing on a twig. There was no surprise that the boys and girls were commended by the guides on their impeccable behaviour and as always the staff were very proud of the children on the day.

Lunchtime Teamwork

at the Pre Prep

Year 2 girls and Year1 boys made a castle out of large construction materials at lunchtime, impressing teachers with their excellent teamwork.

Pre Prep Zumbathon! Bablake Pre Prep enjoyed a morning dancing in the sun as they took part in a charity Zumbathon.

Year 3 Trip to the Transport Museum Year 3 went on another exciting trip to enrich this term’s History topic,‘Discovering Coventry’. We were all grateful for the beautiful weather as we walked to the Transport Museum where we learnt all about Victorian Cycles in a fun workshop. Some of us even had the chance to dress up and get into character! Then we explored the bicycles and cars in the rest of the museum with our parent helpers, and discovered more about Coventry’s industrial past. A fantastic time was had by all!

Year 4 Out and About Year 4 had a brilliant time exploring Nauls Mill Park next to School and also went on a trip to Brandon Marsh where they investigated the habitats of mini-beasts such as woodlice, beetles, centipedes and worms.

The whole school took to the playground (including staff!) as Zumba instructor Hollie kindly took us through some amazing Zumba moves. All the children had a great time and behaved beautifully. The School Council came up with the idea of a Zumbathon as a way to raise money to support Mr Powell’s fundraising for Guide Dogs. Overall the Zumbathon raised £454, a fantastic achievement that will go towards Bablake’s efforts to sponsor a second Guide Dog puppy. Thank you to everyone who donated, to Mrs Cook for the organisation and a big thank you to Hollie for such a great workout!

A Buzz around BJS for the

House Spelling Bee The BJS House Spelling Bee took place last term, to the delight of pupils.

Pupils across the whole school had the chance to gain a place to demonstrate their spelling skills in the competition. Everyone took part in a written spelling test and the top two pupils from each house, in each year, were chosen to represent their houses in the live Spelling Bee final. On the day Mr Price and Mrs Jeffcoat shared the role of host as each year group took to the stage. Each pupil had five spellings to complete and had the unenviable task of spelling into a microphone, in the middle of the stage, in front of the whole school! Throughout the competition, contestants showed fantastic courage and superb spelling skills, with Year 3 and Year 4 pupils getting 100% of their spellings correct! With the scores very close throughout the competition, no one could predict a winner until the last round when Nelson took the lead and won with 46 points ahead of Eliot and Churchill, who both finished with 44 points. Congratulations to all the contestants and thank you to staff and prefects for their help in running the competition.

The New Junior School

Art Room

What a fabulous treat to have a new cedar-cladded Art room. It is a beautiful space, flooded with light and perfect for developing creativity in our pupils. Watching the children draw, paint, print, sculpt and discover has been an exciting journey. Our children have produced some fabulous work which has been displayed and enjoyed throughout the year. Arts Award Explore has continued this year, culminating in the presentation of some fascinating and unique sketchbook work, along with exciting puppet show performances. Sculpture club has

enthusiastically created Giacometti figures, plaster hands, a recycled plastic Wave sculpture, and wicker pieces inspired by contemporary Japanese artist Hashimoto. Sewing club and Costume club have also been running, with a chance for our pupils to sew and create with purpose. Within lessons our pupils are becoming confident in recording their ideas, in making and creating with quality and

refined techniques. They are also becoming more discerning when evaluating and developing their own ideas and work. Just by having a new space, our Art curriculum has been reinvigorated, not just by the room but by the huge enthusiasm from our pupils who benefit deeply from a strong arts presence, the time to work in a hands-on way and discover their creative side.

International Week

Starting the day with “ Tai Chi is relaxing.”

Demonstrating

Democracy at BJS BJS pupils received their first taste of democracy on Thursday 8th June as they held their own general election. Polling cards were given out to all pupils the day before the vote and teachers made sure to discuss the main policies of each party in class, so the children could make an informed decision.

The children came to school on Election Day eager to cast their votes at the Bablake Junior School polling station, with the majority of votes being cast by 8.30am. Political debates could be heard across the playground with pupils strongly supporting their chosen parties, impressing teachers with their knowledge, understanding and informed arguments. Prefects managed the polls expertly and supported a very strong turnout of 94%.

Being part of an international community is a privilege as well as being a lifelong learning project. Our pupils have been sampling a huge range of experiences in order to learn about life in other parts of our world, whilst developing an understanding of others and an acceptance of difference. Within our forms, pupils have learnt about particular countries and then swapped with other classes to share their experiences too.The activities have been numerous: Maori patterns and the Haka from New Zealand, carnival masks from Brazil, Spanish pinatas, Russian faberge eggs, Australian gecko beads and South America dream catchers. Food has played a large part in our week too with sushi from Japan, tapas from Spain, bara brith and welsh cakes from Wales along with tropical mocktails from the South Pacific.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream Year 6 pupils were treated to a brilliant drama day led by Year 6 teachers. They learned all about the Shakespeare play, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, acting out key scenes as a whole year group. Many pupils chose the moment Mr Norman put on a dress as the highlight of the day!

The results came with the Conservatives taking a very slim majority with 63 votes over the Green party who took 62 votes. The Labour party had the next biggest vote with 54 votes, Lib Dems had 17 votes and UKIP took 2 votes. Thanks to our Returning Officer, Miss Shorter, who coordinated the election and provided pupils with such a great learning experience.

“It’s great to learn about an ancient Chinese art.”

DT Week at BJS DT week at BJS was a huge success this term and gave the children the opportunity to develop new skills in design and technology.

Year 5 got to test out their cooking skills during their DT day, making cookies which they flavoured using their own ideas... we’ve been told to watch out for the chilli flavour! On their DT day, Year 3 enjoyed blind fruit tasting and researching where different fruits are grown in the world. Best of all, they designed and created their own fruit plate and carrot car! Everyone got to the top of the towe enjoyed this activity.

This term the Year 4 pupils went away on their first residential trip to Condover Hall. It is always a challenge being away from home on a school trip for the first time and despite a few wobbly starts, each of the pupils remained positive and resilient. The growth that takes place through experiences like this is invaluable. At the start of the trip we were blessed with good weather ensuring that spirits were kept high and full of excitement. Each day revealed more adventures and challenge, these included abseiling, tunnelling, vortex, climbing, body zorbing, Conquest, laser maze and grid of stones; some of the teachers even got involved in the laser action! There was no chance to get bored in the evenings as our energetic instructors organised a movie night and mini Olympics to keep the entertainment going for as long as possible. It was certainly an experience that we won’t forget. Special thanks must go to Miss Love, Miss Fennell and Mrs McElligott for making this trip such a success. What the pupils had to say…

Sharing a dormitory

Sharing a dormitory was a great experience and a first for some of us.We were busy during the day, but at night every one was talking, sharing sweets from the tuckshop and gettin g ready for bed.The boys and girls slept separately so there were two girls rooms and three boys rooms. There was between seven and twelve people in each one.We had chosen who we wanted to share with. Being on a top bunk felt just like being on a normal bed but you had to climb a ladder to get down. The beds were comfy and springy but nobody got to sleep to begin with because of our excitement. We all got to sleep event ually, much to the teacher’s relief! It was a fabulous, independen t two nights. - Ishwar, 4L

Tunnelling

Grid of Stones

Tunnelling involved crawling and exploring down a dark tunnel inside a room in the main house. It was very tight, small and difficult to manoeuvre around the tunnels with dead ends and squeezy spaces. It was especially dark in the places where there was no fake lava. By working together, we explored thoroughly. If you wanted to escape you had to reach a red dome and call for help but no-one in our group did. It was challenging, and finding the way out was hard but fun. It was like being in an actual cave so we were glad to be wearing our helmets!

The game of stones was a huge floor grid full of hexagonal slabs. These glowed with a pattern that you had to follow from start to end. Each person had to choose two people to help them. Miss Fennell was the only one to complete the grid in her group. Everyone got a go. It was extremely tricky memorising the pattern on the stones but it was fun too.You had to listen carefully to the clear instructions from your team mates to help you complete the challenge. Amazingly, your t-shirt also lit up and glowed in the light. It was BRAIN BOGGLING. It was exciting. It was challenging.

BJS Hockey at Midlands Championships

The Bablake Junior School U11 Girls’ Hockey team put on an impressive performance representing Warwickshire at the recent In2Hockey Midlands Championships. Having reached the Midlands final, after excellent results in the previous rounds, the girls knew they were in for some tough competition. Meeting RGS The Grange in their first match, they started positively with a 1-0 victory. With 5 group matches it was a physically tough morning but the girls did extremely well coming 3/6 in the group, only losing 2/5 matches (to the eventual tournament winners and runners-up!). In their last match, the playoff for 5th/6th position, they met Northampton High Junior School. As the skies turned grey and the hail started to fall, the

BJS Warwickshire County Cricket Representatives Earlier this term Bablake Junior School pupils Kajal and James were selected to represent Warwickshire County for the summer cricket season. Year 5 pupil Kajal will be playing for the Warwickshire U10 girls’ team after her successful county trials. Her passion for cricket was ignited when she went with her brothers to their training session at Atherstone Town Cricket Club and started throwing a ball around...the rest, as they say, is history, as she now plays for Atherstone herself and is enjoying representing her county! James, who is currently in Year 6, was spotted as a potential bowler by Mr Benfield and Mr Holder, who put him in touch with Bedworth Cricket Club where he is now a

the girls from the Senior School to help umpire at the tournament, is already looking forward to the girls joining Shells Hockey in September! A big thank you to Mr Bogyor for his fantastic coaching and all his efforts to get the girls to this stage of the competition.

It was a great way to end their hockey careers at BJS, Miss Mullan, who joined

Bablake’s U11 Rounders’Team Complete the Trophy Hat-trick regular player. James represented Warwickshire last year in the U10 team and in the U11 winter squad and has again been successful, having been picked for the U11 summer squad. James is hoping to replicate his highlight of last season, taking 6 wickets in 8 overs for 10 runs, again this year. BJS Headmaster, Mr Price, commented, ‘We are immensely proud of both Kajal and James for what they have achieved on the cricket pitch. They are also both key members of the school cricket teams, with Kajal being the first girl to ever represent Bablake Junior School at cricket! We wish them all the best for the summer season in their school, club and county fixtures.’ Huge congratulations to Kajal and James for this fantastic achievement.

Many congratulations to our U11 Rounders’ team who were victorious yet again at the Croft Tournament earlier this term. Not content with winning this tournament at U9 and U10 level, they have now become triple medal winners. In addition, they remain unbeaten against teams of their own age group in all of their three years of Bablake Junior School rounders fixtures – a fantastic achievement for such a talented squad of pupils.

Bablake Junior School Sport

Bablake Junior School Sport

Cricket Report 2017 Cricket continues to be hugely popular at Bablake with all the boys having had the opportunity to represent the school in a fixture. This success has led to Warwickshire County representation by James Cooper (under 11 boys) and Kajal Tivedi (Under 11 girls). This honour is no small feat and their talent, commitment and passion for the sport has meant that we are all very proud of their achievements. Particular mention must also go to Manjote Sahota who just missed out on county selection this year after some gruelling trials at Edgbaston. This individual success leads to team success and again Bablake Junior have been extremely successful in their fixtures. Bablake Junior School have won 66% of their matches against some very good local, regional and national opposition.

BJS Rounders’

Round Up 2017

Despite the inclement weather of the Summer Term resulting in the cancellation of several fixtures, the sun has shone on all of the Bablake teams. The success of this sport at BJS is a consequence of the pupils’ great enthusiasm in lessons, their commitment to lunchtime practices and attendance at after school clubs and matches. The U11A Team have completed a fantastic season, winning The Croft Rounders’Tournament for the third year running. The U11B, U11C and U11D Teams have also remained unbeaten in their fixtures this term. The U11B secured fine victories against KHPS and The Croft. The U11C team won all three games and not to be outdone, our U11D team won both matches against Bromsgrove Prep School. The Year 5 Rounders’Teams show great potential. The U10As secured 16-4 ½ and 16-5 ½ wins over KHPS and Saint Martin’s in their matches to date.

Simba | Summer 2017

After winning the U9 Croft Rounders’ Tournament last year, the players are looking forward to competing in the U10 Tournament at the end of this term, where they could achieve, “The Double”. The U10B Team have also entered the A Team Tournament due to our strength in depth. They are undefeated after two matches; a fine 12 ½ - 6 ½ victory against KHPS and a 12-12 draw against Eversfield A. Our Year 4 girls have worked extremely hard during lessons and practices and are becoming more familiar with the rules and tactics of the game. They have made an excellent start to their rounders’ careers with three wins in their first three games; a 17 ½ - 9 victory over KHPS, a 12 ½ - 7 ½ win against an Arnold Lodge mixed team and a high scoring 22 ½ - 19 ½ defeat of a strong Eversfield team. They too

look forward to competing in the U9 Rounders Tournament at the end of term. All girls from Years 5 and 6 have participated in the keenly contested Inter House Rounders Tournament. Congratulations to Year 6 winners Churchill and Year 5 winners Eliot. As always, a special mention must go to our parents and supporters who have spurred on the Bablake Teams to great success.Thank you also to parents and family members who have assisted with transport to away venues. It has been much appreciated. On a final and more personal note, thank you to Miss Young, Miss Shorter and Mrs Dawson for their assistance in rounders’ lessons and to Miss Hingley for her invaluable help at practices and fixtures throughout the season. Mrs Reed

The Under 8 team have been the surprise team of the school and they have relished the opportunity to learn and play cricket. As a group they won 4 matches and only lost 1.There is some young talent in this group and I am sure will see some more county representation by the time they are in Year 6! The Under 9s have struggled to find a winning formula this year but were rewarded with a fine 7 wicket victory over King Henry VIII.With more boys joining local cricket clubs over the summer break I am sure they will find more success next year. The Under 10s have shown they are a capable group of cricketers and the A team produced a dominant display in their last match of the season against Crackley Hall and won by 9 wickets! The B, C and D also had good, close matches and enjoyed their trip away to Warwick School. The Under 11s do not like losing any matches and haven’t lost a cricket match in their four years at Bablake Junior School! Regular fixtures were won against Warwick, Crackley Hall, Eversfield and Bilton Grange. Unfortunately (or luckily for them) our fixture against King Henry VIII was rained off.

The “super week” in mid-June proved to be the most exciting week for the Under 11s. Having won the Under 11 Warwickshire hard ball competition by beating a strong Hallfield School team the boys then travelled to Worcester to play in the RGS six a-side competition. This competition comprises of some of the strongest independent schools within the region. The team played brilliantly all day and won all three matches in the group stage to go straight through to the final. We faced a strong Bromsgrove School team comprising several county players but we went on to comfortably chase down the target they set us, losing no wickets! Well done to all the teams, particularly the Under 11s, and we look forward to them representing Warwickshire at the regional finals. Mr Benfield Bablake Junior School

Headmaster’s Notes

Term Dates

2017-18

It is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to Mrs Reed and Mr Bogyor at the end of this term. When I think of Mrs Reed I reflect upon her determination to get the best out of the girls, insisting on getting the basics right so that achievement and a love of sport might follow. When I think of Mr Bogyor I picture the scene when he was helicoptered off the beach in Borth a few summers ago following a surfing accident! Mr Bogyor joined Bablake Junior School as it opened in 1991. He came from King Henrys, relishing the move and the chance to establish our fabulous school. In his time here he has taught everything and appears to have enjoyed it all. Fred has accompanied almost a hundred residential trips and led each one with cheery ‘Action Man’ like enthusiasm. He cares immensely for the children and his colleagues and he is a wise man and a loyal friend.Without him our school and community would have been diminished. Mrs Reed joined Bablake in 1986 and moved to the Junior School some twenty years later. There are children at our school whose mothers Mrs Reed taught

Autumn Wednesday 6th September Term begins and I am sure they all remember her. Only last week it was suggested, almost accusingly, that she was teaching the Year 5’s “New tricks in rounders,” as the girls won again! It was as if we had an unfair advantage because we had Mrs Reed! The latest sports stats do support this though ….. the girls across the school have played over a hundred fixtures in rounders and netball this year and lost only six. A staggering 95% success rate. No wonder other schools eye us enviously.Who can blame them; Mrs Reed is a legend. Clearly her presence has a remarkable effect upon results, especially as we remember that alongside sporting excellence we try to give all the girls a game. She is a very special lady and we shall all miss her. Neil Price
