You don’t know where you are going, until you know where you have been. That saying has never been more prominent for me. If one of our primary purposes in life is to be emotionally secure, financially stable and surrounded by friends and family, well, then, I had achieved those life goals. And yet, after a 4-year immigration process to apply for Permanent Residency of Canada whilst living in London, England, my home city, on December 30, 2012, I nullified all of that aforementioned for the unknown. That unknown was Hamilton. And on that day, in the blistering cold of winter, on the dawn of a new year, my new life began. This letter, in this accompanying introductory magazine, comes at the 3-and-a-half-year mark since my arrival. To say it has been a whirlwind of a time would be an understatement! Whilst I believe that there is no such thing as a mistake if a lesson can be learned from it, this new chapter in my life has not been without its struggles. On my two-year anniversary, it hit me. I was in a total state of shock of what I had done, and it took me a whole year (2015) to overcome the shock. In some ways, it was a year of stepping back and re-evaluating. I contemplated going back to the UK, and was offered work. For the first time since my arrival in Canada, I had to make the ultimate decision. Stay or Leave. And once that decision was made, there was no turning back. It was not an easy decision, and it felt 50/50. What made it harder still was the decision had to be made in a matter of weeks, so there was no time to fully contemplate. My mind was in a complete spin, but after some reflective considerations, the decision was there all along. Stay. Commit. And once that decision was made, I started to look at Hamilton with fresh eyes. I entered 2016 with a renewed sense of excitement. For the first time since my arrival, I was excited to be in Hamilton. Because, and this may sound odd, but I was never excited, because I had no clue what was impending for me. But now, I am super-excited! Goethe said, “At the moment of commitment the entire universe conspires to assist you.” I feel this. My commitment to Hamilton has never been stronger, but what to do to play a role in the city became the question. And that answer is here. After months of preparation, I am pleased to present C2HMag , which is the spinoff of the Cable 14 show, Coming To Hamilton. Published by my new company, BA93, C2H is an extension of a TV show I started earlier this year with Cable 14 that showcases and highlights the ‘newness’ of Hamilton. Who is coming, what they are doing, and what innovations are being created within our city boundaries. What is being Made In Hamilton and how do these entrepreneurial innovations affect us as a community? How do I translate the excitement I feel from the activity of others in our progressive new city, whilst respecting and acknowledging Hamilton’s history and our predecessors? The way to do this is to respect and acknowledge my own history. In creation of my new company, I played with names and titles. But the name was there all along. BA93 is the flight number I took when I left London on December 30, 2012. It feels significant to the story of my life that is unfolding. BA93 will act, primarily, as a media publishing and production company, but to categorize the company’s focus at this stage would potentially, in my opinion, stifle the organic growth and evolution of what it can be, or what it is truly meant to be. Only time will tell! As for C2HMag, I am thrilled to share with you a new project of mine that is not only a collection of works and people that are choosing to call Hamilton “home”, but an embodiment of all I am, and all I am becoming. C2H is a work in progress, much like me, and much like our city. It continues to evolve, even if it can sometimes feel we are going backwards, or even sidestepping. In myself, I have never felt more complete, yet I will never be completed. In some ways, I hope this magazine inspires you, my readers, to embrace yourselves as a work in progress, and as an evolution of self-identity, and an excitement of what is yet to come.
