CELEBRATING

60 YEARS OF SERVICE

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Arizona carrying on the tradition of excellent service for 60 years!

BY TAMICIA CURRIE, EDITOR-IN-CHIEF Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Arizona recently celebrated 60 years of service. Making an extraordinary impact for local children through quality mentorship, the seasoned non-profit provides adult role models from whom young people can learn. While many organizations are faced with charging for services to keep their doors open, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Arizona provides assistance free of charge. The story of how the 501(c)3 began is just as remarkable as their ability to continue transforming the community after several decades of continuous dedication. It started with a New York City Court Clerk, Ernest Coulter, who was in a career that afforded him the opportunity to see first-hand how a large number of children, namely boys, were being pulled into the legal system as a result of their behavior. With the courtroom becoming a revolving door for children in trouble, Coulter decided to make a difference in their lives. That difference began the mission work of Big Brothers. With a similar heart and passion stirring in another corner of the community, a group called the Ladies of Charity, was helping young girls who were faced with many of the same dilemmas that the boys had been facing. The group eventually changed its name to Catholic Big Sisters. This evolution would invoke a merge in 1977 to unite the two organizations (Big Brothers and Catholic Big Sisters) that shared the same purpose of attempting to transform lives. Transformation came, and now more than 100 years on the books of benevolence, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Arizona has expanded into 50 states and 12 countries around the world. What began in the late 1970s with a modest budget of $12,000 and 40 mentor matches has now grown to 640 certified mentor matches. Although none of the founders’ relatives are directly involved in the organization today, the framework of the charity that started long ago has fundamentally remained the same: To serve underserved youth in consistent, caring, one-to-one mentoring relationships. The organization is always accepting interest applications from qualified candidates. After background checks and preliminary prerequisites are completed, matches are assigned to children ages 6-18 based on location, personalities, similar interests and personal preferences.

hen you hear his name, it speaks of integrity; when you know his accomplishments, they speak of greatness. Named the National Basketball Association’s (NBA) Executive of the Year four times, Jerry Colangelo, legendary sports pioneer and famed philanthropist knew at an early age that he was slated to serve others and serve them well.

Colangelo was not the only one with a strong inclination about his impending success. To many of the residents in the small industrial town where he grew up, set Jerry Colangelo apart like a golden child destined to change the community. Having a reputation for being mature at a young age, Colangelo was different. He knew that he was

purposed to leave a strong impression on the world he lived in and the residents of Chicago’s Hungry Hill felt quite the same. “People began to live vicariously through me,” said Colangelo. “People in my neighborhood were looking for me to succeed,” he proclaimed. Regarding success: The young Colangelo who came to Arizona in the late 1960s, vividly recalls many of the foundational principles that Page 6 | Arizona Nonprofit Magazine

helped to contribute to some of the more recognizable achievements he accomplished in life. “We lived in an upper flat and we ate all of our meals together,” explained Colangelo. “My family had a working class mentality and sharing was a part of it.”

allowed their own struggles to stop them from giving back. “We didn’t have much,” acknowledged Colangelo. “But family, faith, friends, and community were always very important,” he recounted.

Raised with a caring heart for the community, Colangelo For families who experience began to intentionally look for poverty, sharing is often viewed ways to shape his future. He as difficult. Yet Colangelo, revealed, “My mother went whose family was also familiar through the fourth grade and with meager living, never

I lacked a strong father-figure in my life. I began to recognize qualities in people that impressed me.” Those impressions were rewarding and his natural athleticism would lead him to receive more than 400 offers to pursue a higher education. “I had all-state recognition and I was the first person in my family to go to college,” Colangelo stated proudly. Earning his college degree, Colangelo had no idea that his future endeavors would prove to be equally remarkable. “It all seems surreal to me,” he said. “I still look at myself as the same kid from that same neighborhood,” stated Colangelo. After Colangelo began working for the Chicago Bulls in the 1960s, he had an inclination that his purpose in life was predesignated. “I began to ask why this was happening to me,” reflected Jerry Colangelo, speaking about his career with the professional basketball team. “Why is this happening for me?” Colangelo pondered. “I knew God had a plan for my life,” he professed. Believing that you can learn from others, Jerry Colangelo became competitive in sports. He realized that in order to succeed, he had to be willing to consider the possibilities. “Taking calculated risks is essential,” said Colangelo. “Be willing to walk out on the plank; that is where the real test is.”

In terms of philanthropy, helping people has always been a part of who Jerry Colangelo is. “You either want to be someone who helps or someone who does not,” Colangelo offered. Married for 54 years, it is important to Colangelo that his legacy dictates a man of faith and family. “If you are consistent in your attitude and belief system, you can do anything,” Colangelo reminded. “It takes leaders who set the tone; leaders set the pace.” Reflecting on the community center he attended as a child in East Chicago Heights, Colangelo believes he is a product of his own experiences and environments. “It left an impact,” said Colangelo. “It was a place of refuge.” Where an impact was once made upon him, Colangelo is now doing the same for others. “Jerry is a man of faith. He is very humble and every person is just as important as the next,” stated Jimmy Walker, a longtime resident who has been inspired by Colangelo’s character. Living up to his legacy, Colangelo may never know the full extent of how he has touched lives but one thing is certain, he has, and it is safe to say with his track record of success, that there is more to come. v

Pets & Nonprofit News BY STAFF WRITER KRISTA HINZ Story Editor: Tamicia Currie

There are thousands of animals in our community and while a number of them find a home through adoptions or fostering, there are so many that still need our help. For every 100 homeless animals who are adopted in Maricopa County, those who remain in shelters are often euthanized. That is why Fix. Adopt. Save. is so important. Primarily funded by the Nina Mason Pulliam Charitable Trust & PetSmart Charities, Fix. Adopt. Save. is a three year initiative to increase adoptions. In addition to looking for homes for unclaimed animals, the organization provides spay/ neuter services, promotes fostering, raises awareness about their homelessness while working to reduce shelter intake as well as euthanasia across the Valley. Now in its third year, the results are proving that it works. “Since 2012, we’ve seen the euthanasia rate drop by 47 percent in Maricopa County, saving the lives of more than 17,500 dogs and cats,” said Sonia Hernandez, Project Manager for Fix. Adopt. Save. Fix. Adopt. Save. also helps centralize animal welfare resources - a huge plus for the sprawling Phoenix-Metro area. Led by seven animal welfare agencies in Arizona, the groups include the Alliance for Companion Animals, the Altered Tails Barnhart Clinic, the Animal Defense League of Arizona, the Arizona Animal Welfare League, the Arizona Humane Society, HALO Animal Rescue, Maricopa County Animal Care & Control and the Phoenix Animal Care Coalition 911. Hernandez said this collaborative effort helps both animals and communities in the process because roaming homeless pets aren’t just a danger for citizens on the road; they also cause community-wide frustration. “When overbred, unwanted animals are not homed, it is detrimental to everybody,” stated Hernandez. The poor economy, over breeding, the size of our county and its population density all contribute to such a vast number of homeless animals around the Valley. According to Hernandez, Maricopa County is second to Los Angles County for the highest percentage of intake at animal shelters in the United States. Many of the animals roaming the streets of greater Phoenix are pit bulls, chihuahuas and feral cats. Since you can find pit bulls and chihuahuas almost anywhere, it makes it harder for them to sell. Hernandez said the overbreeding of these canines has caught up to the community.

To date, more than one million students nationally have completed the educational skills training and mentoring course. “Most people drop out in the first year of college,” said Governor Ducey. ance has been a part of Kenda Newbury’s life since she was four years old. The Arizona native began training at the Phoenix School of Ballet and went on to perform professionally on stages across the world. When she returned to Arizona, she saw an opportunity to give dance professionals more performing options in the Valley. Newbury, a Master Instructor with a degree in Fine Arts, began AZ Dance Group in 2002, which became a non-profit 501c(3) dance company in 2005. “I wanted to create works that merged the techniques and artistry of ballet and modern dance,” said Newbury.

Page 12 | Arizona Nonprofit Magazine

The company grew quickly and now has 30 members. Members of the group include children, at-risk teens, apprentice members, young adults, teens with disabilities and professional dancers. For many productions, they all perform on one stage together fusing the techniques of classical ballet, jazz, and modern dance. The group produces two to six largescale performances per year. While entertaining, Newbury ensures all productions are also educational, inspirational, and thought-provoking ensembles. “We work to nurture both artists and audiences,” said Newbury. “We foster technique and artistry over tricks. We hit for the soul.”

AZ Dance Group has produced works on cancer victims and survivors in a 28-minute storyballet called Run For Life. Another 36-minute piece about domesticviolence called Moving Through Domestic Violence (MTDV), received a grant from the City of Phoenix Office of Arts & Culture in 2009. Dancers will present excerpts of MTDV in October as part of the City’s Paint Phoenix Purple events. One of the group’s most notable performances is their annual holiday concert called A Joyous Christmas. The performance showcases the importance of incorporating dance into all people’s lives including young adults with down syndrome, autism and at-risk teens.

Are you interested in starting a non-profit organization? Here are a few key considerations from Ron Haberle, Founder of PeppedUp!: Grants: “Most grant makers have a minimum age requirement of 2 to 5 years before they will consider you for a grant, so setting a good track record with your budget from the beginning will be a big plus in the future.” - Ron Haberle

©Arizona Nonprofit Executive www.aznonprofitexecutive.com

At the age of 20, when most young adults are at the prime of their life, Ron Haberle, founder of PeppedUp! was battling Hodgkin’s Lymphoma after being diagnosed with the debilitating disease. Undergoing treatment, Haberle began to take notice of the day-to-day issues that many of the patients were facing problems that Haberle soon set out to resolve. “Helping children who battle cancer has been a dream of mine since I went into remission several years ago,”

said Haberle. “In 2011, I came up with PeppedUp!.” PeppedUp! Inc. is a 501(c)3 dedicated to bringing enjoyment to young cancer patients. Providing games, movies, music, and books are just some of the ways Haberle’s organization reaches out to meet their needs. “Making the kids smile, receiving hugs from moms and receiving handshakes from dads is by far the easiest part of my role,” said Haberle.

Page 14 | Arizona Nonprofit Magazine

While putting smiles on a face is not hard for Haberle’s team to accomplish, there are times when fulfilling all of the desires can be challenging. “Program funding and budgeting has to be one of the most important considerations of starting an organization,” shared Haberle. “I think this is one of the biggest obstacles for young nonprofits to deal with, since it is hard to reign back the desire to help everyone at once,” he expressed. v

Everyday They’re Hustling For A Better Phoenix BY STAFF WRITER KRISTA HINZ to create ventures that give back: intellectual (education and training), human (volunteer mentors) and financial (connections to potential funders). This trio of capital opportunities encompasses the Hustle Institute. Hustlers are business owners who are primarily from South Phoenix, Central Phoenix, the West Valley, and West Mesa. “Anyone can join,” Jacques admonished.

You could say Jordan Jacques was a born hustler. Since he was a child, you could find him selling Kool-Aid on a corner in his neighborhood. In grade school, Jacques was selling mints to classmates out of his backpack.

While the word “hustle” is familiarly associated with people turning a profit illegally, Jacques, Director of Entrepreneurial Development at Hustle PHX, is determined to turn that stereotype inside-out. “We’re reclaiming the meaning of ‘hustler’ for people who are risk takers, loyal and able to make a profit in a positive way,” defined Jacques. Hustle PHX takes a Robin Hood-like approach to help local businesses and entrepreneurs mainly in urban areas where access to capital may be non existent. The ultimate goal is to encourage the creation of sustainable business ventures that help all communities in Phoenix flourish. Founded in 2012 by Oye Waddell and motivated by Christian faith, community is at the heart of the Hustle PHX’s mission. The organization’s tagline, Let the hustlers hustle for the common good, is something the organization stands by. “We try to funnel the mindset that business is not just for oneself,” said Jacques. “If you’re a business owner, you have a community obligation,” Jacques reminded. The entrepreneurs dubbed “hustlers” are provided with three essential kinds of capital

“Everyone is welcome as long as their venture is something that’s productive, instead of taking away from society,” shared Jacques. Once accepted, the hustlers go through an intensive eight week training program called Hustle PHX 101. During this course they learn business basics like researching competition, formulating a business plan, production and marketing. They are also given mentors who are volunteers willing to share their time and expertise in the areas of incubating, designing, launching, as well as scaling for new businesses. “Good business is helping others and our goal is that they’re [the hustlers] successful to the degree of helping others,” Jacques said. The course culminates at Pitch Day, giving the hustlers an opportunity to capture and secure investors who may offer funding. The next Pitch Day is this November and is open to the public. For the ambitious Hustler Institute graduates, the organization offers Hustle 202, which can take nine months to a year to graduate. In this course, there’s no ceiling to what the hustlers can earn. Jacques has come a long way in his hustling game. Today, he knows it’s not about him or profit alone. “I live in the same community that I serve,” he said. “I think it’s all about dignity, being proud of using your God-given talent for yourself and for others.” For more information on Hustle PHX, visit www.hustlephx.org. v

With a shear desire to encourage the weary, Pipkin knows that sometimes it may take a while for people to discover their skills. “If you lift somebody else up, you lift yourself up. Lifting up others is important,” Pipkin concluded. v

The goal of Fix. Adopt. Save. is to continue to preserve more lives until the number of pets at risk is drastically reduced. If you would like to learn how you can give other animals a better life and a home, visit www.fixadoptsave.org. v

“I think too many students are afraid of making mistakes,” Newbury offered. “I want all of my students to learn from it and when they do, it tells me they’re taking a risk.”

“Nothing about this program for individuals with different abilities is adapted,” she said. “They are learning things and doing things that children, teens and adults are learning in their dance studios,” Newbury assured.

“As artists, if we emotionally touch at least one person in the audience, we’ve done our job. It’s amazing,” she concluded.

Other AZ Dance Group educational programs encompass apprentice and children’s companies, an at-risk/underprivileged teen program, a
