Barcelona

Barcelona’s location on the Mediterranean coast assures a warm, welcoming climate with pleasant temperatures all year round. The city boasts more than 5 kilometres of beaches, an Olympic marina, open-air restaurants, famous stores for shopping, and many street cafes.

Absorb Barcelona’s wonderful history and bohemian atmosphere. Walk through the Gothic Quarter, one of the world’s best-preserved medieval areas, and the Ribera and Raval districts. The bustling streets and neighbourhoods can be easily explored by bus, by bicycle or on foot.

Of course, if Barcelona is famous for any one thing, it is its buildings. Take the time to admire the city’s architectural masterpieces such as the Sagrada Familia and La Pedrera, created by Antoni Gaudí and other architects, and soak up Modernisme, the city’s home-grown Art Nouveau movement and all that Barcelona has to offer.

President’s Welcome SEVC 2014

Dear colleagues,

It is my great pleasure and honour to address you all as president of the Southern european Veterinary conference. We have approached the 2014 congress (the 8th annual SeVc and the 49th AVePA National congress) with the same enthusiasm and determination that we have had every year to offer all our members, veterinarians and partners, the best scientific programme that will contribute to the improvement of animal welfare.

On behalf of the Spanish Association of Small Animal Veterinary Specialists, thank you for attending this conference. I know you will enjoy the excellent national and international speakers, as well as the exhibition Hall, where you will find all the up-to-date information about the advances in internal medicine, surgery, nutrition, pharmacology, imaging of small and exotic animals, and much more.

This year AVePA commemorates the 50th anniversary of its creation. 50 years of history where the protagonists are the veterinarians involved in the Association. We want to say a special thank you to all of them. The SeVc conference is an important part of the AVePA history, and we therefore also want to thank all delegates, speakers and companies involved in this project.

We welcome you to Barcelona and know that you will enjoy our city and our congress.

In this workshop the attendees will run patient blood samples through advanced hematology and chemistry in-house Idexx analyzers. Afterwards, we will evaluate the blood smears, graphics, and numerical values, and discuss the clinical cases. It’s an interactive lab, with which you will learn to familiarise yourselves with the latest equipment present in your daily practice and learn to fully understand and interpret the results obtained. Knowing how to properly use house-in analysers will improve clinic-work efficiency by facilitating the whole diagnostic process.

Broaden your practice’s services: Learn to perform the most frequent dental procedures.

This laboratory covers key points that will help a practitioner start a dental service or improve an existing service. In the laboratory, experts will teach dental information that will cover 70% of the services performed in dogs and cats. Also, laboratory participants, who will work in pairs on anatomical specimens using first-class equipment and instruments, will receive a copy of the Proceedings that includes additional materials.

The lab will be divided into three modules. In the first module, “Diagnostic: Oral clinical Assessment and charting” (1.5 hours), every participant will learn how to properly examine the oral cavity and evaluate occlusions using a chart. They will also receive a template of the dental chart and a poster with the occlusion evaluation. The second module, “Oral Prophylaxis” (2 hours), will cover teeth scaling, polishing, sulcular lavage and other prophylactic applications. The goal of this workshop is to teach participants how to correctly carry out complete oral prophylactic procedures performed in 80% of dental patients. The third module, “Introduction to canine and Feline extractions” (4 hours), will include anatomic presentations, step-by-step procedures, and surgical and non-surgical extraction standards. Participants will learn how to make extractions more easily and to avoid complications. When they complete the workshop, participants will be fully prepared to apply the dental skills they have learned.

The goal is not to train experts on MRI and c T image interpretation, but to give veterinarians the skills they need to understand the image results from image diagnostic specialists. The workshop will begin with an introduction on the basics of reading MRI and c T images and other useful tips. An interactive session will follow, where participants, working in pairs at a computer, will assess MRI and c T images of real clinical cases. In this hands-on session, delegates will learn how to correctly perform basic abdominal surgical procedures (i.e. enterotomy, enterectomy, gastrotomy, gastrectomy and cystotomy), and how to check if the tissue apposition is adequate in order to prevent the risk of postoperative leakage. Various suture patterns will be presented and practiced on gastrointestinal and bladder segments. Participants will learn all the relevant suture patterns from the basic simple interrupted and simple continuous pattern, to the more advanced patterns such as cushing, Lembert or Mattress patterns, and practice different knotting techniques. Where and when the different types of sutures are used will also be discussed. This is an interactive, hands-on session focused on basic surgery and it is intended for veterinary surgeons with minimal experience in this field.

This year AVePA, the Spanish Small Animal Association, celebrates its 50th anniversary.

Since 1964 the many activities, courses and conferences which have been held are now converging at the various events occurring throughout Spain to celebrate the association’s 50th anniversary. This central act of remembrance, and the ones held in the other AVePA centres, are intended to be a tribute to our more than 4,200 members and the pioneers of our profession.

All of AVePA and its partners attending the 49th National congress of AVePA are invited to attend this special event.
