Barcelona

Barcelona’s location on the Mediterranean coast assures a warm, welcoming climate with pleasant temperatures all year round. The city boasts more than 5 kilometres of beaches, an Olympic marina, open-air restaurants, famous stores for shopping, and many street cafes.

Absorb Barcelona’s wonderful history and bohemian atmosphere. Walk through the Gothic Quarter, one of the world’s best-preserved medieval areas, and the Ribera and Raval districts. The bustling streets and neighbourhoods can be easily explored by bus, by bicycle or on foot.

Of course, if Barcelona is famous for any one thing, it is its buildings. Take the time to admire the city’s architectural masterpieces such as the Sagrada Familia and La Pedrera, created by Antoni Gaudí and other architects, and soak up Modernisme, the city’s home-grown Art Nouveau movement and all that Barcelona has to offer.

President’s Welcome AVEPA-SEVC 2015

Dear colleagues

It is a great pleasure and honour to address you all as president of the Southern european Veterinary conference.

Last year we were celebrating the 50th anniversary of AVePA (Spanish Small Animal Veterinarians Association) the Spanish Association and this year we are celebrating the 50th AVePA National conference together with the 9th SeVc (Southern european Veterinary conference), the 21st FecAVA conference (Federation of european companion Animal Veterinary Associations) and the 12th FIAVAc conference (Federation of Iberoamerican Small Animal Veterinary Associations).

During all these years AVePA has promoted scientific training, not only for its partners and Spanish veterinarians, but also throughout europe and around the world. It is a special year, not only because it is the fiftieth anniversary of our National congress, but also because we celebrate it in conjunction with the FecAVA and the FIAVAc conferences, making this event even more international.

On behalf of the Spanish Association of Veterinary Specialists in Small Animals I thank you all for coming to this meeting of veterinarians in europe and Latin America. The Organising and Scientific committee has prepared an excellent programme with the best national and international speakers and a trade show where we see the latest news and developments, not only in medicine and surgery, but also in nutrition, pharmacology, imaging and special techniques for small and exotic animals.

These 50 years of congress are thanks to our Partners, the real stars of the association, and therefore I want to make a special thanks to all of them. I hope we can meet at our next congress, the 51st AVePA congress and 10th SeVc in the city of Granada. enjoy the conference!

Regards

currently, how can we manage the ever growing information that is constantly entering the veterinary profession?

This situation, now universal in society for well over a decade, urges us to establish a different framework from which to learn and use knowledge. In effect, we must adapt, and adopt, new ways of learning, locating information, and in particular in the veterinary field, in how we observe the world and solve problems. In this session we will explore how both veterinary programs in europe and USA are evolving, and how they are changing the profile of veterinarians emerging from such programs, as well as address teaching /learning methodologies for continuing professional education, and the resulting challenges for member of the profession.

SURGERY

Gastrointestinal and urinary suturing techniques

Learn to produce minimal tissue trauma for a better healing and how to avoid postoperative incision leak in your gastrointestinal and urinary surgeries.

In this hands-on session, delegates will learn how to correctly perform basic abdominal surgical procedures (i.e. enterotomy, enterectomy, gastrotomy, gastrectomy and cystotomy), and how to check if the tissue apposition is adequate in order to prevent the risk of postoperative leakage. Various suture patterns will be presented and practiced on gastrointestinal and bladder segments. Participants will learn all the relevant suture patterns from the basic simple interrupted and simple continuous pattern, to the more advanced patterns such as cushing, Lembert or Mattress patterns, and practice different knotting techniques. Where and when the different types of sutures are used will also be discussed. This is an interactive, hands-on session focused on basic surgery and it is intended for veterinary surgeons with minimal experience in this field.

WOUNd MANAGEMENT

Wound management techniques in small animals

Participants in this hands-on lab will learn current and cutting edge wound management options that are much more effective than the traditional wet-to-dry or dry dressing.

Moist wound management, the standard of care in human and now veterinary medicine, will be discussed and participants will learn how to select and apply moisture retentive dressings such as calcium alginate, polyurethane foam, hydrocolloid, and hydrogel to a variety of wound types. They will also gain experience with a number of useful tools and techniques for wound management, including properly pressurized lavage, skin stretchers and stents, ring retractors, active closed suction drains, wound diffusion catheters, honey, negative pressure wound therapy, and maggot therapy. Lab activities will alternate between group discussions and rotating around a series of stations where participants engage in hands-on activities using medical equipment and models (this lab does not employ live animals or cadavers). Participants will also be presented with clinical case examples on which they can practice decision-making regarding wound care strategies. By the end of this lab, participants will have expanded their ability to manage challenging wounds and design effective wound care plans that are tailor-made for each individual patient.
