Dear colleagues,

It is my great pleasure and honor to address you all as president of the Southern european Veterinary conference. We have approached the 2013 congress (the 7th annual SeVc and the 48th aVePa national congress) with the same enthusiasm and determination that we have had every year to offer all our members, veterinarians, and partners the best scientific programme that will contribute to the improvement of animal welfare.

on behalf of the Spanish association of Small animal Veterinary Specialists, thank you for attending this conference. I know you will enjoy the excellent national and international speakers, as well as the exhibition Hall, where you will find all the up-to-date information about the advances in internal medicine, surgery, nutrition, pharmacology, imaging of small and exotic animals, and much more.

We have made several changes this year, not only to the scientific programme, but also with the physical facilities. There will now be a special entrance to the SeVc from avenida Maria cristina, where you can enter the exhibition Hall and the conference rooms (Pavilion 5).

We welcome you to Barcelona and know that you will enjoy our city and our congress.

SEVC 2013 Workshops

The SeVc workshops give delegates a unique hands-on laboratory experience. Working with small groups (maximum 20 people), world-class instructors will teach new techniques using the latest equipment.

The workshops are presented in english, but instructors will provide assistance with other languages.

delegates can register for the workshops only, without registering for the SeVC Scientific Programme.

EVERYTHING YOU ALWAYS WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT CYTOLOGY AND BLOOD SMEARS, BUT WERE AFRAID TO ASK!

Put your microscope to good use! Master the fundamentals of cytology and blood smears, and learn how to diagnose a wide variety of pathologies. a practical and interactive laboratory!

This course will teach participants how to use a microscope to interpret cytological specimens from a wide range of tissues and to differentiate inflammation from neoplasia, as well as how to read blood-smear preparations and obtain clinically useful information in small animals. after a short presentation of clinical cases, participants will observe preparations individually through their own microscopes and learn how to make definitive diagnoses. The instructor will also, with the use of a videomicroscope, discuss the key points of each sample case with all the participants. on completion of the laboratory, participants will be able to recognise the different cell types commonly encountered in blood smears and to identify pathologic changes, frequently occurring toxic changes, and infectious diseases of red blood cells, leukocytes and platelets. Participants will also be able to properly differentiate inflammation and neoplasia in cytology preparations, and to diagnose specific neoplasms.

DERMATOLOGY

GAIN CONFIDENCE IN DIAGNOSING THE MOST FREQUENT PROBLEMS IN DERMATOLOGY

Master the recognition of skin lesions associated with the most common dermatology problems and become acquainted with the basic, albeit essential, diagnostic techniques in skin cytology.

This laboratory will help general practitioners develop a clinical approach to the evaluation of the most common dermatology problems presented in daily veterinary practice. Participants will work in pairs at a computer containing patient data and images of lesions, skin scrapings, hair plucks, cytology, etc. after completing this laboratory, participants will be able to identify the morphology of the most common skin lesions; define frequent dermatology problems; postulate differential diagnoses; select, perform and interpret the techniques used to microscopically examine the skin surface and hair; and know when cases should be referred to a dermatologist.

The SeVc workshops and laboratories adhere strictly to the ethical oversight directions and approval under Spanish regulations in their use of live animals. The number of animals used is always minimal. every effort is made to avoid situations and procedures that would cause anxiety and pain in the animals, and appropriate sedation and analgesia are used whenever necessary. no animal will be euthanized to meet the needs of any SeVc workshop.

a shuttle bus service operates between Fira de Barcelona and uaB for certain workshops:

Workshop: Dentistry in small animal practice

Workshop: TPlo as a method for repairing cranial cruciate ligament ruptures

Buses are for vets registered for the laboratory taking place in the UaB building only. The trip from the SeVc venue to UaB takes 1 hour.

DENTISTRY IN SMALL ANIMAL PRACTICE

Broaden your practice’s services with new or improved dental services.

This laboratory covers key points that will help a practitioner start a dental service or improve an existing service. experts will teach dental information that will cover 70% of the services performed in dogs and cats. also, participants, who will work in pairs on anatomical specimens using first-class equipment and instruments, will receive a copy of the Proceedings that includes additional materials about dentistry.

The laboratory will be divided into three modules. In the first module, “Diagnostic: oral clinical assessment and charting” (1.5 hours), participants will learn how to properly examine the oral cavity and evaluate occlusions using a chart. They will also receive a template of the dental chart and a poster with the occlusion evaluation. The second module, “oral Prophylaxis” (2 hours), will cover teeth scaling, polishing, sulcular lavage and other prophylactic applications. The goal of this workshop is to teach participants how to correctly carry out complete oral prophylactic procedures performed in 80% of dental patients. The third module, “Introduction to canine and Feline extractions” (4 hours), will include anatomic presentations, step-by-step procedures, and surgical and non-surgical extraction standards. Participants will learn how to make extractions more easily and to avoid complications.

When they complete the workshop, participants will be fully prepared to apply the dental skills they have learned.

Using biomodels, participants will look at several specifically chosen wound types that will require management to overcome specific challenges. attendees will share the results and discuss best practices as they receive hands-on instruction. They will also have the opportunity to question and critique the latest technologies and products for open-wound management. Products featured will include Manuka honey, hydrogels, foam dressings, silver, antimicrobial dressings, negative pressure therapy, hydrosurgical debridement, laser therapy, and more.

OPTHALMOLOGY

“GETTING A CLEAR VIEW OF THE EYE,” OR HOW TO PROPERLY PERFORM AN OPHTHALMOLOGIC EXAMINATION

Learn, step-by-step, how to evaluate the eye.

This laboratory will teach specific techniques for examining the eye, such as making the best use of the direct ophthalmoscope (which every clinician has, but few use to its best advantage) and methods such as slit lamps and fundus cameras, including the optibrand clearview. Working in small groups, attendees will examine the eyes of live animals and learn the important features of the cornea, iris and retina, as well as how to interpret abnormalities.

When participants have completed the laboratory, they will be able to perform a basic ophthalmologic examination and diagnose the most frequent eye pathologies seen in small animal practice.
