pREsidENt’s WELCOME sEVC 2012
Dear colleagues,
It is my great pleasure and honor to address you all as the new president of the Southern european Veterinary conference. We have approached the 2012 congress (the 6th annual SeVc and the 47th aVePa national congress) with the same enthusiasm and determination that we have had every year to offer all our members, veterinarians, and partners the best scientific programme that will contribute to the improvement of animal welfare.
on behalf of the Spanish association of Small animal Veterinary Specialists, thank you for attending this conference. I know you will enjoy the excellent national and international speakers, as well as the exhibition Hall, where you will find all the up-to-date information about the advances in internal medicine, surgery, nutrition, pharmacology, imaging of small and exotic animals, and much more.
We have made several changes this year, not only to the scientific programme, but also with the physical facilities. There will now be a special entrance to the SeVc from Plaza españa, Pavilion 1, where you can enter the exhibition Hall (Pavilion 1) and the conference room (Pavilion 5) without crossing the street. The two buildings are now interconnected through a single entrance/exit from the Plaza españa.
We welcome you to Barcelona and know that you will enjoy our city, our congress and Spain.

sEVC 2012 WORKsHOps!
each year, the SeVc provides hands-on labs with leading international instructors and the latest technology and equipment to help you enhance your practice skills.
The SeVc’s workshops are another unique feature that enable delegates to gain hands-on lab experience and learn new techniques by working in small groups (no more than 20) with world-class instructors using the latest equipment on the market.
The workshops will be presented in english, but instructors will provide assistance with other languages. registration for the workshops does not require registration for the SeVc Scientific Programme.
The SeVc workshops and laboratories adhere strictly to the ethical oversight directions and approval under Spanish regulations in their use of live animals. The number of animals used is always minimal. every effort is made to avoid situations and procedures that would cause anxiety and pain in the animals, and appropriate sedation and analgesia are used whenever necessary. no animal will be euthanized to meet the needs of any SeVc workshop.

Put your microscope to use! Master the fundamentals of cytology and blood smears, and learn how to diagnose a wide variety of pathologies. A practical and interactive lab!
This course will teach participants how to use a microscope to interpret cytologic specimens from a wide range of tissues and to differentiate inflammation from neoplasia, as well as how to read blood-smear preparations and obtain clinically useful information in small animals. after a short presentation of clinical cases, participants will observe preparations through individual microscopes and learn how to make definitive diagnoses. There will also be a collective discussion where, with the help of a video-microscope, the instructor will go through all the key points of each sample case. With the completion of the lab, participants will be able to recognise the different cell types commonly encountered in blood smears and to identify pathologic changes, frequently occurring toxic changes, and infectious diseases of red blood cells, leukocytes and platelets. Participants will also be able to properly differentiate inflammation and neoplasia in cytology preparations, as well as diagnose specific neoplasms.

Physiotherapy is a growing area in veterinary medicine and an important aspect of treatment of many orthopaedic and neurologic conditions. This day-long lab, presented by an experienced practitioner and class IV therapy laser educator from a practical, practitioner’s perspective, will be divided into a morning session dedicated to therapeutic exercises as an essential part of the animal’s physical rehabilitation, and an afternoon session that will cover laser therapy. In the morning session, participants will learn how to plan therapeutic exercises in common orthopaedic conditions, in conservative and post-operative treatments (hip dysplasia, cranial cruciate ligament rupture, elbow dysplasia, etc.), as well as how to choose the most appropriate exercise for each patient considering age, injury, and stage of recovery. The afternoon session consists of a two-hour combination of lecture and interactive learning, working in small groups with real animals. Participants, both current and prospective users, will learn how diode therapy lasers operate, how to use them safely, and how class IV laser light interacts with tissue to reduce pain and inflammation and accelerate healing. additionally, up-to-date treatment protocols for effective use will be explained, and the impact of class IV therapy lasers on patient care will be demonstrated through presentation of many clinical cases in picture and video format. exercises will demonstrate laser capabilities and techniques with an emphasis on safety for the patient, operator and observers. each participant will receive multi-media reference materials at the end of the lab.

ECHOCARDIOGRAPHY: CORRECT USE AND INTERPRETATION OF THIS IMPORTANT DIAGNOSTIC TOOL
An essential tool for the cardiologist! Participants will work in small groups with live animals and receive tutoring from specialists – don´t miss this opportunity to gain condence with your echocardiographic diagnoses.
The main purpose of this wetlab, which is considered basic-tomedium level, is to learn how to optimize all the echocardiographic projections in order to improve the quality of the examination and to analyze the information obtained for proper use in the clinical setting. The wetlab will be performed in two parts: a three-hour morning lecture session and a four-hour afternoon practical session with echo-training in dogs. The theoretical part will focus on a complete description of ultrasound physics and detailed instructions for obtaining standard echocardiographic image planes. Participants will learn how to correctly interpret the main echocardiographic images and measurements, not only from the anatomical point of view but also from the functional and hemodynamic point of view. This session will provide the basis to perform a good echocardiographic exam and an accurate interpretation and measurements of heart anatomy and function. During the practical session, participants will work in small groups to apply the echocardiographic information and learn best practices to get the best images for more reliable measurements. at the end of the wetlab, participants should have a basic level of cardiac physiology and pathophysiology, be able to obtain optimized projections and know the most relevant hemodynamic information obtained from those projections.

GASTROINTESTINAL, RESPIRATORY AND COELOMIC ENDOSCOPY IN LIZARDS AND CHELONIANS. A NEW WAY TO WORK!
Change the way you practise reptile medicine and surgery forever! Scope your way through this much-requested, all-day wetlab and learn all the fundamentals of reptile endoscopy.
rigid endoscopy has been established as a crucial technique for disease diagnosis and minimally-invasive surgery in reptiles. With the guidance and tutelage of a reptile endoscopy expert recognized worldwide, participants will enjoy a day-long workshop on reptile endoscopy. The morning will comprise of lectures on equipment choice and preparation, and gastrointestinal, respiratory and coelioscopy (laparoscopy) procedures. lectures are heavily illustrated with images and video, and full written notes are provided. The afternoon wetlab will consist of live-animal endoscopy procedures in lizards and chelonians, including diagnostic evaluation and biopsy from the upper gastro-intestinal tract, cloaca, bladder, lung and coelomic viscera. Biopsy techniques, particularly of the liver and kidneys, will be practised, and minimally-invasive endosurgery will be performed using chelonian ovariectomy as a model procedure.
The goal of this course is to make veterinarians comfortable with endoscopy equipment and offering the procedure to their clients. after this course, veterinarians should be able to perform with confidence gastro-intestinal, respiratory and coelioscopic evaluations in lizards and chelonians.

THE ROLE OF TEMPERAMENT IN CANINE AND FELINE BEHAVIOURAL MEDICINE
Learn to prevent and treat behavioural problems in dogs and cats by identifying temperament traits at an early stage.
Temperament traits are increasingly recognised as important risk factors in the development of many behaviour problems in dogs and cats. Therefore, recognising and working on temperament traits is essential to prevent and treat behavioural problems in companion animals. Working with animals and in small groups, the aim of this lab is to provide the clinician with the theoretical background and practical skills to assess and influence basic temperament traits in dogs and cats.
