The fountain, one of the city’s most popular attractions, is the home of the “Piromusical,” a ballet-like spectacle of water and light. You can see the show from 1 October, every 30 minutes from 19 to 21.30h, Fridays and Sundays.

MNAC Museum! The Palau Nacional, the building that was the emblem of the 1929 International Exhibition, now houses the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya. A magni cent, unparalleled view of Barcelona can be seen from its unique site on the mountain of Montjuic.

SEVC 2011!

Southern European Veterinary Conference

Since 2007, the SEVC has been building its reputation as a conference whose scienti c programme provides an outstanding continuing education opportunity for veterinarians all over the world. Again in 2011, more than 200 lectures by more than 100 world-wide experts will cover every aspect of companion animal veterinary care from diagnosis to therapy, including speci c topics such as anaesthesia, dentistry, dermatology, diagnostic imaging, emergency/critical care, neurology, ophthalmology and orthopaedics.

The SEVC’s mission is to present the veterinary community with the latest advances in animal care in a professional, but fun, environment. This year’s social events will include the not-to-be-missed Grand SEVC Fiesta.

Spanish and English are the SEVC’s o cial languages and simultaneous translation will be provided at all lectures. At some lectures, simultaneous translation into Portuguese, Russian and Polish will also be provided.

Dear colleagues,

As you know, the 46th National Congress of AVEPA and the 5th annual Southern European Veterinary Conference will be held in Barcelona from 29 September to 2 October, 2011.

This is my last year as president of the Congress and it has been an extraordinary experience and a great honor.

We are very proud that in ve years, the SEVC has become such an important scienti c and technical meeting in Europe for companion animal veterinarians. Every year, more than 5,000 veterinary professionals from more than 40 countries come to the SEVC, where they can attend their choice of more than 200 lectures, 11 workshops, and symposia presented by about 80 speakers covering14 specialties.

We are also proud of how we have grown in ve years. For example, 200 abstracts will be presented at SEVC 2011, a 30 percent increase from 2010.

SEVC 2011 registration desks are located in the entrance hall area at the Barcelona Congress Centre. Please collect your badge and documentation there. At the desks, you may ask any questions about the Conference or for on-site registration for the Scienti c Programme, the International Nursing Programme, Workshops and social event.

SEVC Registration Badges

Please take care of your registration badge and its holder. The badge provides access to not only the Conference Rooms but also the Exhibitors’ Area, and it authorises you to collect your Certi cate of Attendance at the “Bayer Cyber Corner.” Each badge has a bar code that will be read by SEVC personnel when you enter these areas. Co ee and lunch tickets are also included in the badge holder.

Security personnel have been instructed to refuse admission to anyone not wearing an o cial SEVC name badge. In case of loss or damage, the organisation will provide you with a new badge. Lunch and co ee tickets won’t be replaced.

GENERAL INFORMATION!

SEVC Speaker Room

This room is located upstairs on the second oor of the “Barcelona Congress Centre.” Only SEVC speakers and authorized personnel will have access to this room. The speaker room will be open the same time as the registration desks. Sta o cials can be identi ed by their blue or white SEVC shirts. Any o cial will be happy to help you if you have any questions.

Simultaneous Translation Earphones

All rooms o er simultaneous translation into English and Spanish, as well as some other languages such as Polish, Russian and Portuguese within the small animal medicine room. You can collect your earphones at the designated tables. It is compulsory to leave a National Identi cation Card, Passport or 300€ in cash as a deposit. No credit cards, hotel room cards or Presentation Cards will be accepted. Please return the earphones at the end of each day to allow the batteries to be recharged.

SEVC Conference Rooms

All rooms will be open for 5 minutes between lectures. All rooms will then be closed for privacy. A sta member will check delegates’ badges when they go in or out of the room.

Rooms will be locked during co ee and lunch breaks. All delegates will be asked to leave the rooms at this time.

Food or beverages are not allowed in any of the conference rooms. The SEVC does not permit the recording of any lecture.

Delegates will receive an SEVC Proceedings CD when collecting their documentation at the registration desks. The CD, which contains most of the Scienti c and International Nursing programmes, as well as information about the speakers, is in both English and Spanish.

It is highly recommended as a complimentary treatment for dermatosis in dogs and cats with upper skin conditions, thanks to a combination of ingredients that help re-establish the integrity of the skin. Applying Allerderm spot-on® helps restore the protective barrier of the skin thus facilitating hydration, reducing its sensi ti v it y and reinf or cing it s prot ec t ive r ole . Composition: Ceramides 3, Ceramides 6 II, Ceramides 1, Cholesterol, Sodium lauroyl lactylate, Xanthan gum and water. Instructions for use: to open the pipette, hold it upright and then turn the tip rmly until it breaks. In cats: brush back the fur below its neck until skin is visible. Place the catheter directly against skin and then gently press the body of the pipette until you have completely emptied its contents onto the skin. In dogs: Brush back the fur between its shoulders until skin is visible. Place the catheter directly against skin and then gently press the body of the pipette until you have completely emptied its contents onto the skin. Empty the entire contents of the pipette all along the back of the dog. Allerderm spot-on® may also be applied directly to broken skin. Quantity and frequency of use: one pipette a week for 4 weeks. The doses may be increased from two to three to pipettes a week, up to one a day depending on the seriousness of the cuts and as advised by your veterinary surgeon. To limit relapses and to keep the skin and hair coat healthy, apply one pipette a month during treatment. For best results, apply after a bath, when the fur is completely dry. Avoid prolonged storage at temperatures of over 25°C. Presentations: box with 6 pipettes of 2 ml. For cats and small dogs ( <10kg). Box with 6 pipettes of 4 ml. For medium and large dogs (≥10 kg). Know how to successfully manage one of the most frequent orthopaedic problems in the dog.

This course will introduce participants to the latest techniques used to stabilize the sti e in dogs with a tear of the cranial cruciate ligament. Short lectures will be presented on decision-making; diagnosis (partial and complete tears); surgical approach; and surgical techniques, including extracapsular repair, and TPLO and TTA techniques. Identi cation of abdominal pathologies made easy! Participants will acquire ultrasonographic interpretation skills and use the knowledge you gained if you attended the Canine Abdominal Ultrasonography lab.

After a short introductory lecture, which, among other things, will cover how to write an accurate ultrasound report, delegates will work in pairs in computer workstations assessing the most frequently diagnosed cases using abdominal ultrasonography. The history, clinical ndings, x-rays, etc., complemented with several videos of the ultrasonographic examination, will be provided in each case. At the end of the lab, each clinical case, and corresponding ultrasound report, will be discussed in groups with the guidance of the instructors.

The SEVC workshops and laboratories adhere strictly to the ethical oversight directions and approval under Spanish regulations in their use of live animals. The number of animals used is always minimal. Every e ort is made to avoid situations and procedures that would cause anxiety and pain in the animals, and appropriate sedation and analgesia are used whenever necessary. No animal will be euthanized to meet the needs of any SEVC workshop.

Learn how to obtain high quality images to make accurate ultrasound diagnoses. In this hands-on lab with live dogs, participants will practise locating abdominal organs with the guidance of experts.

This practical class with live dogs will teach participants basic abdominal ultrasonographic skills and ultrasound anatomy, with guidance and feedback from experts. Participants will work in groups of four and rotate through di erent stations where instructors will teach imaging of the major abdominal organs. Delegates will master ultrasonic imaging of the liver and spleen, left kidney and left adrenal gland, pancreas and right adrenal gland, intestine, mesenteric lymph nodes, bladder, prostate, medial iliac lymph nodes, uterus and ovaries, and the right intercostal approach to the liver and right kidney. At the end of the lab, delegates should be able to obtain suitable images of these organs.

Participants will learn how to read blood-smear preparations and obtain clinically useful information in small animals. After a short presentation of clinical cases showing how blood smears can provide additional diagnostic information, participants will observe preparations individually through their own microscope and learn how to make de nitive diagnoses. When they have completed the lab, participants will be able to recognize the di erent cell types commonly encountered in blood smears and to identify pathologic changes, frequently occurring toxic changes, and infectious diseases of red blood cells, leukocytes and platelets.

An essential lab for mastering cardiac and respiratory auscultation.

The stethoscope is one of the most obvious images of a medical professional, but many veterinarians do not know how to make optimal use of this instrument. In this lab, recorded and simulated heart and breathing sounds will be used to teach how to assess small animals with cardiac and respiratory diseases. Participants will be presented with brief case histories and associated sound recordings and asked to consider the likely causes, di erential diagnoses and follow-up diagnostic tests. Both congenital and acquired cardiac diseases will be considered, with emphasis on interpreting the signi cance of speci c sounds and murmurs within the clinical context. Breathing sounds typical of upper and lower airway diseases will be heard, with emphasis on establishing the anatomic level of respiratory disease. Participants will leave this lab knowing how to make better use of their stethoscope, interpret the signi cance of murmurs and abnormal sounds, and apply this knowledge to their patients.

Don´t lose this opportunity to update your knowledge on the emerging methods of physiotherapy, an essential specialty in today´s practice.

This practical lab includes a morning and afternoon session using live dogs. It's highly recommended that participants attend the rehabilitation lectures scheduled in the main program on Thursday afternoon. The four-hour morning session will include an introductory lecture followed by an interactive session on physiotherapeutic diagnostic evaluations, which represents the crucial rst steps in any successful rehabilitation program. Attendees will become familiar with the special tests used by physiotherapists to evaluate soft tissue impairments associated with orthopaedic disease and learn about the palpation of “covert” structures being introduced in an entirely new approach for evaluating the lame patient. Palpation skills will be complemented with the use of goniometers and girthometers to assess the patients for ROM (active and passive) and muscle strength and electrical stimulation. A nal discussion on “Putting it All Together” using case-based examples for group discussion will close the morning session. The three-hour complementary afternoon session will be devoted to the use of modern physiotherapy equipment available today for the rehabilitation of dogs. The participants will have the chance to work with an underwater treadmil and learn the uses of therapeutic lasers, ultrasound, force plate and shock therapy. At the end of this rehabilitation lab, participants will know how to examine the dog’s muscles and joint control, make a diagnosis, and know the fundamentals of treating the problem using modern equipment, always keeping in mind that no therapeutic modality can be fully e ective without an appropriate diagnosis.

Make a di erence in a dog's outlook on life and prevent future behavioural problems. Learn the important do's and don'ts of basic training and socialisation of puppies.

The behaviour of a dog results from highly complex interactions between genetic predisposition and environmental in uences. The e ect of the environment is particularly important during the rst weeks of postnatal development. An inadequate environment that does not ful ll a dog’s basic needs and improper training techniques increases the probability of the appearance of behavioural problems. This is the starting point of the so-called puppy seminars, which consist of structured programs o ered by veterinary clinics with two main objectives: to allow puppies to interact and socialise with other puppies and people, and to teach owners early handling and training. Professionals (veterinarians, veterinary nurses or dog trainers) teaching these puppy classes should have not only a basic theoretical background on canine behaviour and training, but also some experience in the organisation and running of these seminars. The purpose of this lab is to demonstrate how to run a puppy seminar from a practical point of view. Discussion will include: general structure and timeline, materials, a catalogue of exercises, and ways to deal with the most common questions and comments. All key aspects of preventive behavioural medicine will be analysed and, whenever necessary, practised through hands-on exercises with dogs. At the end of the course, participants will be able to o er their clients a basic program for the prevention of behavioural problems in dogs.
