Wednesday, June 30, 2010 AUSTIN SPORTS FOOTBALL The Packers won their first postseason in contest in years when they topped Winona 18-13 in the first round of the Section 1AAAA football tournament, but their season ended on a 29-8 loss to Northfield in the second round. “We would’ve liked to have more wins, but it was a great five months and there wouldn’t be anybody else I would want to be around for five months,” Austin head coach Tim Hermann said after the season. The Packers went 4-6 overall and their offense was boosted by the running of senior running back Jerrad Ryks, who ran for 1,288 yards (6.3 per carry), and 18 touchdowns, while catching 15 passes for 113 yards. Hermann resigned as head coach after the season and Austin graduated most of its core, so it will have a different look in 2010 as Matt Schmit, a former assistant, takes the helm.

The Packers graduated six seniors and will have a much different look next season. “I’m not going to call next year a rebuilding year but we’re going to drastically change the way we play,” Austin head coach Kris Fadness said. “We’re going to press and run and play a lot of bodies. It’ll keep the seniors involved and integrate the young kids.”
