This exciting time is filled with music, literature, art and creativity. At Austin Area Arts, all year long, our volunteers invest their time and talent to make Austin ArtWorks Festival—and our other programming at the Austin ArtWorks Center and the Historic Paramount Theatre— happen every year. TYLER QUITMEYER

Tyler graduated from Austin High School in 2019 and was named AHS Artist of the Year. He was named first runner-up for the 2019 Minnesota Junior Duck Stamp Contest put on by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. His artwork was chosen as a winner for the Congressional Art Competition. It is currently on display at the U.S. Capitol. This fall, he will be attending Carleton College to study biology.

2019 AUSTIN ARTWORKS FESTIVAL

FEATURED ARTIST: RORY WAKEMUP “Darth Chief, Buffalo Thunder Trooper, Smart Wars Resistance Troopers”

St. Paul-based artist Rory Wakemup exhibited at the Rochester Art Center’s “Andy Warhol, MN GOES POP” in 2017 where ArtWorks Festival volunteers were impressed with his sculptures mixing iconography from his Anishinabe heritage, an eclectic range of Pan-American Indian regalia and iconography from the Star Wars universe. Wakemup was selected to be the 2019 Featured Artist by a committee of ArtWorks Festival volunteers from a pool of fourteen nominated artists. Wakemup earned a Master of Fine Arts in Glass/Sculpture from the University of Wisconsin - Madison and a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Jewelry, Photography, Printmaking and 2019 Featured Artist Sculpture from the Rory Wakemup Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico. He won the University of Wisconsin-Madison Chazen Museum Prize in 2015 for his exhibition, “Kill the Idiot, Save the Fan,” a reference to the 19th century phrase “Kill the Indian, Save the Man” which summarized the purpose of U.S. government boarding schools for native children. Wakemup won grant funding from the Minnesota State Arts Board, Forecast Public Art, Hennepin Theatre Trust and SpringBoard for the Arts. Wakemup’s work will be exhibited at the Austin ArtWorks Center 2nd Floor Gallery during the Austin ArtWorks Festival and the artist will be present to greet visitors. He will make a brief presentation about his work on Saturday, August 24 at noon at the Austin ArtWorks Center.

2018 Purchase Award Sponsors Kris and Jeff Baldus hang the 2018 Purchase Award Winner Vince Quast’s “Water Over Rocks” at the YMCA of Austin.

Each year, a generous sponsor donates $5,000 to the Austin ArtWorks Festival Purchase Award. The sponsors then choose one piece of work as the winner of the Purchase Award. The funds allow Austin Area Arts to purchase the awarded work which is then displayed at a community location. Currently Purchase Award winning art is on display at seven community locations. ARTWORKS CENTER: TRUNK SHOW Meet these artists and learn about their creative process at the Austin ArtWorks Center retail space.

ANN MADLAND OF LANESBORO, MN “I started creating jewelry when I was young, by taking vintage jewelry pieces and sewing them onto fabric to create chokers,” explains Ann Madland. A master of metal smithing, Madland has been designing and creating jewelry for over 20 years. Ann creates her sterling silver, hand made pieces in Lanesboro, Minnesota. They are available in small retailers in five other states and on her web site annmadland.com. Ann also creates custom jewelry in collaboration with her customers. “My jewelry became a part of who I was. I envisioned jewelry as an art form, and to this day I create beautiful, magical, wearable art,” says Ann. She’s inspired by dreams, magic and nature and her work is embedded with her positive energy. Try a piece for yourself and experience a feeling of confidence, beauty and abundance.

LISA TRUAX OF PICKWICK, MN

Lisa’s pottery is a favorite of Austin ArtWorks customers because it is functional, decorative and often whimsical. Originally from Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, she studied studio art, graphic design, and ceramics at Carthage College and Michigan State University. She currently lives in Pickwick, outside of Winona, Minnesota, where she maintains her studio. “I create work that is intended to add to the home, whether through use or decoration,” says Lisa. “Work is created by hand, either on the pottery wheel or through slip casting porcelain with original handmade molds. All glazes are custom made as well, with a focus on food safety, color, and durability.”

Austin Area Arts works to support and develop emerging artists in our community, including students. To advance that goal, the Austin ArtWorks Festival hosts the Youth Exhibit in the SPAM® Museum featuring the art of local K-12 students. Austin ArtWorks Festival committee volunteers visited school-based art shows at Austin High School, Banfield Elementary, Ellis Middle School, Gerard Academy / Old Dominion, Neveln Elementary, Pacelli Catholic Schools, Southgate Elementary and Sumner Elementary. Students at each show were awarded the ArtWorks Festival Award blue ribbon and were invited to exhibit work at the Austin ArtWorks Festival. Sponsors Potach & Mitchell are providing a prize pool for Youth Exhibit awards which will be posted on August 24 and announced on the outdoor stage at 4 p.m. In 2018, the Youth Exhibit Best in Show awards went to Rosie Meh (elementary), Lauren Murphy (middle school) and Cynder Higgins (high school).

WILLIAM TAUFIC: OUR AUSTIN, OUR AMERICA Professional photographer William Taufic is the son of an immigrant and is an Austin native. He will share how he was inspired by Austin’s growing diversity to move back to his hometown to connect with the community and create this exciting project which features portraits and the compelling stories of people pictured that celebrate diversity. Find out how you can be involved and perhaps add to the stories.

BEE BALM FIELDS

Performing: Laura Karels on vocals and rhythm guitar, Pete Wallace Klug on guitar, Ben Scruggs on bass, Eric Bunde on percussion and Dustin Voges on trumpet Genre: Americana Mankato-based Bee Balm Fields formed in 2015 of musicans with roots in southern Minnesota, growing up in New Ulm, New Richland, Mankato and Janesville. Klug and Scruggs grew up on farms adjacent to each other. Their music is influced by blue grass, indie and folk with nods to country artists like Willy Neslon and Patsy Cline. Named after the Minnesota prairie flower, bee balm, the band released the album “Butternet Valley” in 2015.

This five-piece blues ensembled is made up of band members who have played with icons like Bo Diddley, Nick Moss and Big George Jackson. Expect blues infused with harmonica, creole and funk. In thirteen years together, the Everett Smithson Band has released five albums including 2018’s “Tall Tales.” Everett Smithson will teach a free harmonica class on Saturday, August 24 at 10 a.m. See more information on page 23.

Naturalist and educator David Stokes is bringing animals to the festival stage—literally. Using live creatures and animal artifacts, songs and short stories, David gets down with his audiences, and makes learning about nature fun. Stokes won Wisconsin Environmental Education Teacher of the Year and a Wildlife Society’s Aldo Leopold Award. ____________________________

The four-piece group has been featured at South by Southwest (SXSW) in Austin, Texas and is known for their energy and playfulness. According to front man Isaac Gill Elker,”We want to surprise our audience from song to song. An ensemble of some of the best musicians in the Twin Cities, Funktion Junction will have the crowd dancing to Motown, disco, classic rock and smoking blues. Retro Soul’s “Big Mike” Mothershed played the festival stage in 2017 and 2018 and fans won’t want to miss his performance with Funktion Junction.

The band formed in 2016 and brings a pop sensibility to their quirky, comedic live shows. Trained in jazz and inspired by funk and classic rock, expect to dance along to their genre-bending tunes. Siblings Sara, Cameron and Melissa, and their cousin, Chloe, are proud to continue the musical traditions handed down for multiple generations in their family from local legend Olaf Hanson. They keep his tradition alive with classical and fiddle tunes as well as Broadway, pop, and folk music.

Performing: Charlie Parr Genre: Country blues / Roots / Rock Austin native Charlie Parr will present his signature country blues tunes on the festival stage. An easily confused and very shy individual, Parr left Austin, Minnesota in the 1980’s in search of Spider John Koerner, whom he found about 100 miles north at the Viking Bar one Sunday night. The experience changed his life, made him more or less unemployable, and set him on a journey to create and play music. He has released 16 albums and was featured in a documentary film. After performing in Austin, Parr will embark on a 17-city European tour. Parr lives in Duluth, Minnesota with his spouse and two children. ____________________________

Genre: 1930s and 1940s Formed in 2014, Reminisce takes their name literally by performing swing-band era favorites from the 1930s and 1940s. The trio brings all the genres you fondly remember to life: smooth jazz, big band, Latin, easy listening, polkas, and waltzes. You may have enjoyed their performances at the Hormel Historic Home, Four Daughters’ Winery, Austin Country Club, and the Town Center.

Performing: Beth Radloff Becker, Brenda Radloff, Emily (Nelson) Beaver—principal substitute for Sue Radloff Genre: Classical strings For 35 years, mother Sue has been playing with her two daughters, Beth and Brenda as a trio. A long-established private violin teacher for many years, Sue is now retired. Beth Becker has been teaching strings in La Crosse, WI for 29 years. Brenda Radloff teaches strings at Holton and Ellis in Austin for the past 10 years. For this event Emily (Nelson) Beaver, a longtime student of Sue Radloff, will substitute for her.

TRIO SEN NOME

Performing: Sam Bergstrom on guitar and cavaquinho, Melissa Bergstrom on flute and melodica, Lee Peterson on percussion Genre: South American Trio Sem Nome (portuguese for ‘trio without a name’) brings former Austinite Sam Bergstrom and his wife Melissa back from their work as music instructors at Anoka Community College. The two join Lee Peterson to perform a variety of South American music from Brazilian Samba and Bossa Nova to Argentinian tangos combined with jazz influences. The trio is based out of the twin cities.

SCHINDLER CELEBRATION: MAX WEINBERG’S JUKEBOX Max Weinberg’s Jukebox will take the stage of the Paramount Theatre for the 5th Annual Schindler Celebration on Saturday, August 24. The 7 p.m. concert is the centerpiece of the Austin ArtWorks Festival and is sponsored by Mayo Clinic Health System to celebrate the life of family physician Dr. Dick Schindler who practiced medicine for over 40 years and passed away in 2014. Max Weinberg is an American drummer and television personality, most widely known as the longtime drummer for Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band and as the bandleader for Conan O’Brien on Late Night with Conan O’Brien and The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien.

“It’s not a concert, it’s a party,” Weinberg told the Albany, NY Times Union in January. The Max Weinberg’s Jukebox concept has the audience collaboratively make the set list by calling out titles from a scrolling 300+ song list resulting in an interactive, energetic music party. “These are the songs that I listened to as a kid,” Weinberg explained. “Everything from the Beatles to the Stones to the English invasion and the Beach Boys.” Tickets will go on sale on Friday, June 28. With sponsorship support from Mayo Clinic Health System, tickets to the show were priced at $25 advance, $30 day-of-show. Other venues offer tickets at $75-$100. This is a reserved seating show.

MEET THE AUTHORS: SATURDAY, AUGUST 24 PATRICK HANSEL

10:00 A.M. • Genre: Poetry A native of Austin and graduate of Pacelli High School, Hansel has published poems, stories and essays in over 50 journals and anthologies, including The Meadowland Review, The Transnational, Isthmus, Red Weather Review, Ash & Bones and Lunch Ticket. He is the editor of The Phoenix of Phillips literary magazine, a new journal for and by the people of the most diverse neighborhood in Minneapolis. His book of poetry The Devouring Land is available from Main Street Rag Publishing. Some of the poems in the book are based in Austin.

WILLIAM KENT KRUEGER 11:00 A.M. • Genre: Mystery

Raised in the Cascade Mountains of Oregon, William Kent Krueger briefly attended Stanford University—before being kicked out for radical activities. After that, he logged timber, tried his hand at freelance journalism, and ended up researching child development at the University of Minnesota. He makes his living as a full-time author. His work has received a number of awards, including the Minnesota Book Award, the Loft-McKnight Fiction Award, the Anthony Award, the Barry Award, the Dilys Award, and the Friends of American Writers Prize. His last nine novels were all New York Times bestsellers. Ordinary Grace, his stand-alone novel published in 2013, received the Edgar Award, given by the Mystery Writers of America in recognition for the best novel published in that year. The companion novel, This Tender Land, is scheduled for publication in September 2019.

12:00 P.M. • Genre: Fiction, Nonfiction Dr. Matt Jaremko has authored articles in over 30 publications and he has given over 100 presentations related to stress and trauma research during his long career in clinical psychology. He has taught at the university level for almost 20 years, primarily at the University of North Texas, University of Richmond, University of Mississippi and the University of Texas Health Sciences Center at Dallas. His academic activity has been balanced by the operation of his independent practice of clinical psychology for over 25 years. He estimates teaching over 2,000 students and delivering over 35,000 hours of psychological services to around 10,000 clients. Chemical dependency and dual diagnosis have been a point of focus in his clinical practice.

1:00 P.M. • Genre: Nonfiction Longtime award-winning Minnesota journalist Curt Brown has authored five books, including Minnesota 1918, which chronicled the trifecta of woe—war, fire and flu—that descended on the state a century ago. His first

book, So Terrible a Storm, detailed a wicked gale that slammed Duluth in 1905. His 30 years in daily journalism included early stints at the Fergus Falls Daily Journal, Minneapolis Associated Press bureau and the St. Paul Pioneer Press. During 26 years at Minneapolis Star Tribune, he was named Minnesota Journalist of the year in 2013 for a six-part serial narrative, In the Footsteps of Little Crow, that recounted the 150th anniversary of the U.S.Dakota War. An ebook version of the series climbed to No. 14 on the New York Times bestseller list for ebooks. Curt and is wife, Adele, moved to Durango, Colo., in 2014, but he continues to write a popular Minnesota History column every Sunday in the Minneapolis Star Tribune.

MARION DANE BAUER

2:00 P.M. • Genre: Young Adult/ Children’s Literature Marion Dane Bauer was born in Oglesby, Illinois, and currently resides in Falcon Heights, Minnesota. She is the author of over 100 books ranging from board books, picture books and early readers—both fiction and non-fiction—to books on writing and novels for middle grades and young adults. Her numerous awards include an American Library Association Newbery Honor Award for her novel, On My Honor. Her most recent publication is a picture book, The Stuff of Stars, illustrated by Ekua Holmes. She was one of the founding faculty and the first Faculty Chair for the Vermont College of Fine Arts MFA in Writing for Children and Young Adults. Her books have been published in more than a dozen languages.

GARY ELDON PETER 3:00 P.M. • Genre: Fiction

Gary Eldon Peter’s short fiction has appeared in Water~Stone Review, Great River Review, and other publications and has been performed on Selected Shorts on National Public Radio. Oranges, his linked short story collection, won the 2016 New Rivers Press Many Voices Project competition and was published in 2018 by New Rivers. It also received the Midwest Book Award and was a finalist for the Minnesota Book Award and the Flannery O’Connor Award for Short Fiction. He holds an MFA in Creative Writing from Sarah Lawrence College and a JD from William Mitchell College of Law. Born and raised in Austin, MN, he is currently a faculty member in the College of Education and Human Development at the University of Minnesota and lives in St. Paul.

4:00 P.M. • Genre: Nonfiction Fr. Dale Tupper brings over fifty years in the Catholic priesthood to his message. As a priest of the Diocese of Winona/Rochester, MN, he spent 16 years as a teacher and administrator in diocesan Catholic high schools. He was an associate Maryknoll missioner for five years in the Republic of South Korea. On his return, he founded Holy Spirit Parish and school in Rochester, MN, and was active there for 13 years. Then he moved to Austin, MN, where he became pastor of Queen of Angels Parish for 12 years until he retired.

11:00 A.M. • Genre: Fiction In 2000, Jerry Mevissen emigrated from the Twin Cities and retired to the Crow Wing River Valley. For three years, he wrote a column for the Sebeka Menahga Review Messenger called Nimrod Chronicles. Selections from that column resulted in a book of the same name, published by North Star Press in 2005. He followed that with collections of short stories, Broken Hart in 2008, Good Shepherd in 2014, That Reminds Me in 2016, and Animal Life in 2018. He is a member of the Jackpine Writers’ Bloc in Park Rapids and continues his association with The Loft Literary Center in Minneapolis. Jerry hobby farms on the Crow Wing River where he tends Scottish Highland cattle, Haflinger horses, and his faithful pup, the Princess Sophia. He currently enjoys his new obsession – found objects sculpture.

His novel Stories For a Lost Child invokes the waters of Lake Superior and the Mississippi River, and the deep woods voice of Misaabe (Bigfoot) to help his characters make sense of the problems in their lives. By day he teaches students in American Indian Studies at the University of

Minnesota about the wicked smart, moving, and profound things that Native writers have to say about the world and by night he tries to rise to the standards they set. Stories for a Lost Child was a finalist for the 2018 Minnesota Book Award.

LARRY GAVIN

3:00 P.M. • Genre: Nonfiction, Poetry Larry Gavin is the author of four books of poetry: Necessities, Least Resistance, Stone & Sky and The Initiation of Praise. His fifth book, A Fragile Shelter: New and Selected Poems is due for publication in 2019. Gavin also worked as senior editor for 15 years for Midwest Fly Fishing Magazine writing articles on the environment, fly fishing, and issues facing the Midwest’s cold-water streams. He currently writes for Minnesota Outdoor News and coordinates writer’s panels for the Great Waters Fly Fishing Expo in Minneapolis and Chicago. He is the recipient of the Leo Dangel Creative Literature Award, two NEH grants, and the Red Dragonfly Press “Emergence” Chapbook Series. His work can be heard on KAXE radio’s WORD*ISH, a poetry program. Gavin also had a brief stint as an actor, appearing in KTCA’s version of the Emmy-winning “How to Talk Minnesotan,” Gavin has read his poems all over North America. He was born and grew up in Austin, Minnesota.
