WELCOME

FROM THE EDITOR

AT THE TOP our city truly is best admired from above. When not tens of stories above the city, our team remains firmly planted, spending our free time exploring Atlanta’s many fabulous neighborhoods and the verdant grounds that grace their homes. Style Editor Clinton Smith takes us on a stroll down memory lane with just a handful of Atlanta’s most coveted outdoor havens (page 12), and also introduces our inaugural Southern Ground: The Pinnacle of Outdoor Living Contest. From storybook gardens to grandiose estates, our awards will recognize exceptional outdoor spaces in Atlanta and second-home markets in the Carolinas, Tennessee and Florida. Finally, don’t miss your last chance to visit the 2022 Southeastern Designer Showhouse & Gardens before we close our doors on May 8. We hope you’ll join us!

WE’VE ALL SEEN THEM: The construction cranes that have dotted the Atlanta skyline for years are a dead giveaway to our city’s rapid growth. With new office buildings, luxury condominiums, unique restaurants and an abundance of retail spaces going up every single day throughout the city, I’m certain there will never come a time where we’ve experienced every corner of Atlanta’s ever-evolving footprint. And as a transplant myself, it’s thrilling to know that locals and newcomers alike get to experience the change together. From The Charles to The Waldorf Astoria, our May issue stands tall with three stylish and sophisticated high-rise projects from designers Kelly Wolf Anthony (page 36), Harrison Design (page 50) and Nancy Izlar (page 62). Each of these residences provides a bird’s-eye view into the most luxurious side of high-rise living, confirming that

Designer Holly Laughridge of Old Edwards Inn and Spa and Acorns Boutique kept the design approach of her Cashiers glamping tent simple: “I was inspired by the feeling of peace and calm,” she says. To evoke a feeling of serenity, Laughridge selected neutral fabrics accented with hints of green in accessories and plants. To tie the space to its verdant surroundings, a floral painting through Artists Guild of America serves as a focal point, welcoming guests to sit back and relax in the two chaise lounge chairs that Laughridge selected not only for their poise but for their comfort as well. And that was the goal: a place for guests to sit down and stay awhile. “I imagine someone who loves nature, but maybe not so much being outside, would enjoy this space to the fullest,” says Laughridge. “This is the perfect spot to curl up with a book and immerse yourself in the world you are reading about.” —Written by Lauren Iverson

Parker Platt & Katie P. Jackson, Platt Home With functionality and easy living at the heart of their design, Parker Platt, principal of PLATT, an architecture, construction and interiors firm, and Katie P. Jackson, design director for Platt Home, created the perfect space for a couple to relax as well as entertain. “The inspiration was to transform what can be a primitive experience into a comfortable and somewhat luxurious environment that could accommodate all the aspects of a relaxing weekend in the mountains.” As one makes their way to the tent platform, they are greeted with an Argentine-style firepit enclosed by Westport-style Adirondack chairs. With festival lights hanging overhead and neighboring greenery by Alex Smith Garden Design, guests can share s’mores and stories while curled up next to the fire. Inside, the linen-draped walls and ceiling act as a backdrop for two beds outfitted with plush comforters and Ralph Lauren for Kravet pillows. Anchoring the furniture, a sisal rug layered with a cowhide softens the overall feel of the space. —Written by Evan Edwards 18

BUDDING BEAUTY Tori Alexander, Alexander Interiors

When Tori Alexander pictures Cashiers, North Carolina, the recurring themes that come to mind are family, tradition and natural beauty. “My goal was to create a whimsical retreat that captures a nostalgic feeling of childhood,” she says. “Incorporating floral prints and garden accents marries nature within the space and is intended to inspire the gardener within us all.” Chintz fabric from Cowtan & Tout seen on the arm chairs, pillows and backdrop launched the design for Alexander by reminding her of her own childhood bedroom. Vintage and antique pieces placed throughout are rich with meaning, including a twig-style child’s chair, pair of twin beds and hanging garden containers, all elements inspired by each of Alexander’s three daughters. “Children love intimate spaces that inspire imaginative play,” says Alexander. “I wanted this to be a place to encourage dreaming and cultivate a love for nature’s beauty.” —Written by Lauren Iverson 19

Melanie Couch & Nancy Dyleski, Spruce Interiors Inspired by the tradition of campfire storytelling, Melanie Couch and Nancy Dyleski of Spruce Interiors transformed their tent into a conversational oasis ideal for late-night chats among friends and family. Lush greenery, mimicking the surrounding brush in the area, greets guests as they make their way into the small yet stylish canvas shelter. The concept “dark, moody and boozy” guided the Spruce team when it came to design decisions—think cool tones and playful patterns, which are represented heavily throughout the space. Inside, 20

CROWNED JEWEL

When creating the storyline of the person who would most enjoy her glamping tent, designer Susan PeaceVernon of Tribus Interior Design imagined an art-focused, outdoorsy individual. So, when she and her team found a patchwork oriental rug on Etsy that reflected the creative spirit she wished to instill, it was a no-brainer. “We fell in love with that rug and we knew that it was the perfect application,” she says. “It was the true inspiration of the feel and color scheme for the space.” A rainbow of jewel tones commingles effortlessly with pops of pinks and blues. Rattan and wicker accents, such as a chest from Gabby and a chandelier from Palecek, elevate the earthy allure the Tribus team wished to create. The final touch: a scenic painting from local artist Diane Condon, chosen for its outdoor appeal and as an encouraging note to guests to explore beyond the tent. —Written by Lauren Iverson

Douglas Hilton, DWH Interiors In a space fit for royalty (designer Douglas Hilton jokes it would be the tent Marie Antoinette would go camping in), European influences played a major role in many design choices. As one makes their way inside the tent, plush jewel-tone fabrics, velvets and embroideries fuel the senses. A nature-inspired screen made of bifold closet doors and wrapped in Cowtan & Tout grasscloth acts as the heart of the space and beckons eager campers to take refuge from the outside elements. A handcrafted chandelier from Egypt illuminates a Strathmore Carpet One Floor & Home tiger rug, which adds the perfect amount of flair among the antique furniture that occupies the entire tent. Hilton notes that antiques make for the best travel items because “they already have a few nicks and have survived revolutions.” —Written by Evan Edwards 22

The revitalization of South Downtown is marked by development at long-vacant 222 Mitchell with Class A office space, retail, restaurant and entertainment amenities. The 333,000-square-foot project is the first in the U.S. for NEWPORT RE, which recently announced with partner Slater Hospitality that a rooftop modern diner and cocktail lounge will open in summer 2023. “We feel like South Downtown is just so essential for Atlanta because it’s part of our urban core and some of the most historic buildings we still have as a city,” says APRIL STAMMEL, Newport’s senior vice president of marketing and leasing. Whether you’re crane-watching or viewing parklike additions to existing and new skyscrapers, there’s much to see in Midtown these days. The neighborhood has had more than 4 million square feet of office space, 5,200 residential units and more than 1,000 hotel rooms delivered or under construction in the last four years, according to the MIDTOWN ALLIANCE. “We’ve seen more new development, more new investment in Midtown than ever before,” says president and CEO KEVIN GREEN. Midtown Union (pictured), which is scheduled to be complete in the third quarter, includes a 26-story office tower with 612,000 square feet, the 355-residence Mira at Midtown Union tower and a 14-story, 230-room Kimpton hotel. It’s one of 17 projects under construction, as of February, according to the Alliance. The ROCKEFELLER GROUP’s 1072 West Peachtree, an office and residential project proposed to reach 61 stories, could be the city’s tallest skyscraper. SELIG’s new 1105 West Peachtree added 675,000 square feet of Class A office, the Epicurean Atlanta hotel, luxury condos and amenities such as an elevated sky plaza. An outdoor terrace is among the features in Midtown Union, which is extending Arts Center Way with pedestrian-friendly retail. Green says office developers are making substantial investments in parks and plazas because they recognize the need for air, light, functional outdoor areas and collaborative spaces.

Naomi Von Habersham FOR SOMEONE WHO IS AFRAID OF HEIGHTS, I adore living in a high-rise. For one thing, high-rises tend to draw people from diverse backgrounds, which makes getting together with the neighbors an often interesting experience. Then there are the amenities, from 24/7 security to package and food deliveries left by one’s door. But perhaps the biggest advantage to high-rise living is one which, sadly, I just can’t bring myself to enjoy: the lofty views. On the one hand, I would love to drink my morning coffee while looking out at Stone Mountain on the distant horizon or wind down after a long day while gazing at an illuminated downtown skyline, but that would mean that I would need to reside in a sky-high unit, and frankly, I’m too big of a chicken for that. For one thing, the idea of a building swaying, even just a little bit, during high winds and storms seems unnatural, even though I’m told that from an architectural standpoint, it’s a good thing. Can you imagine what it must be like to be on one of the top floors of, say, the Burj Khalifa in Dubai during a wind event? I feel woozy just thinking about it. And what about living on an upper floor in one of those super-skinny high-rise towers that now dot the Manhattan landscape? The first sign of dark clouds in the distance and I’d be scrambling for an elevator to get down on terra firma. For the developers who build high-rise residential buildings, the good news is that most people want to live as close to the top of a building as possible. But even though I can’t bring myself to live above the fifth floor, it doesn’t mean that high-rise living isn’t for me. In fact, it’s quite the opposite. I love the convenience and the sense of community that high-rises have to offer. Even though my views might be limited to the tree branches of some notso-tall trees, I can’t think of a better place to live.

SAINTS + COUNCIL IS THE CITY’S latest go-to Friday-night destination to recharge, consume unique seasonal dishes and sip on charming refreshments. “The inspiration for Saints + Council was to create an uplifting environment for friends to come together and spur each other onto greater heights,” says president and owner William Pitts, who is also the restaurateur behind Café Intermezzo. “It’s a place to receive the daily bread of camaraderie, craft cocktails and great food.” The menu is constantly evolving with the seasons, keeping local ingredients as the foundation for every creation. “The culinary approach of our menus is simple: fresh, local, made from scratch and delicious,” says Saints + Council executive chef Jerry Walker. The restaurant is also notorious for their extensive beverage menu and talented team of mixologists. “We are a scratch bar program, meaning we prepare all of our syrups and juices in house as well as our own cordials, shrubs, tinctures and more,” says beverage director Madison Tolman. “This allows us to infuse each ingredient with unique and complex flavor profiles that are exciting on their own or pair beautifully with our seasonal cuisine.” A collaboration between architect Tom Tedrow of Tedrow Design Group and interior designer Courtney Goodrich, the cozy chic interiors feature various “living room pods” where guests can escape the bustling Atlanta streets to mingle with friends over tasty fare. Outside, a stylish dining area equipped with fire pits and comfortable seating is the perfect place for late-night summer soirees. Says Pitts, “[The design] is a blend of two styles that really comes together—almost like a bougie Aspen ski lodge built within a city.” saintsandcouncil.com

A ALTHOUGH STILL seeking out new adventures as he approached his 80th birthday, interior designer Kelly Wolf Anthony’s client was nevertheless worried that he might not enjoy living in the modern penthouse he purchased at an upscale midrise in Buckhead. Indeed, fearing it might be too sterile, he decided against selling the single-family manse where he and his late wife had raised their children. Determined to dispel his worries, Anthony and architect Oliver Carter transformed the apartment by making key architectural changes, adding custom millwork and commingling new furnishings with their client’s existing pieces and extensive art collection. Rendered in a black and white palette punctuated with strategically placed pops of color and pattern, the clean, edited design “allows the art to take center stage,” explains Anthony. “We had a complete inventory of his artwork and accessories, so we were particular about everything’s placement.” Crisp white walls and porcelain tile flooring, for example, create a gallerylike backdrop for art in the spacious living

area, where a pair of linen-covered sofas and streamlined leather club chairs create a convivial spot for conversation. “It’s simplistic but elevated,” says Anthony. The palette flows into the dining area, where a graphic rug the client acquired in Morocco defines an ebony-stained table and tailored upholstered chairs underneath a mobilelike chandelier that she persuaded the client to incorporate. “It reinforces that this is an art home.” Steps away, a pair of linen-covered slipper chairs accompany a piece of animated artwork by Todd Murphy. Carter built a hidden projection room for the piece, which shows nature scenes and Murphy’s daughter dancing ballet, and is

displayed in one of the penthouse’s many niches added with art front of mind. The architect also collaborated with Anthony on a luxe bar in what was formerly a guest bedroom. Based on the design of one of the client’s favorite spots, The Lobster Bar, the space sports a groin vault ceiling clad with glazed ceramic subway tile accented by dark wall paneling and a veiny marble bar. “[The client] and his buddies play cards three or four times per week, so that was a really important space,” says Carter. As was the formerly bland hallway to the primary suite. Creating a home for the client’s large collection of weighty tomes, Carter incorporated built-in bookshelves 43

Hoping to create an equally memorable experience, Anthony and her team made it their mission to introduce their client to his new home with panache, welcoming him with a glass of bubbly and staging the space with flowers and glowing candles. Bowled over by the result, the owner called his real estate agent straightaway with instructions to put his house on the market. “He never knew in his wildest imagination that he would feel the way he felt when he saw the place,” says Anthony. “He’s just as happy as can be.” See Resources, Back of Book. 47

EVEN WHEN IT WAS an unfinished shell just waiting to be built out, a full-floor penthouse inside Buckhead’s Waldorf Astoria dazzled nonetheless, thanks to its 360-degree views of Atlanta and surrounding areas. So when an out-of-state businessman purchased the residence as his family’s home away from home, he sought to finish the space so that the views remained the primary focus. Turning

52

to Harrison Design, which has worked extensively in the building, the new homeowner tasked designer Betsy McBride and architect Robert Tretsch with creating a sleek aerie in the sky. Tretsch organized the residence so that its main living spaces, such as the living room and study, face south, creating a show of the city’s skyline. The home’s private spaces, including bedrooms and bathrooms, are situated opposite, on what Tretsch refers to as the “quiet” side of the building, offering peaceful, less-bustling views of North Atlanta and Stone Mountain. Advocating a modern, minimalist space, the architect eschewed crown molding and extraneous flourishes, but that’s not to say that the space is devoid of architectural dash, such as the striking circular recess in the living room ceiling, which Tretsch conceived as a counterbalance to the building’s many angles. “The circle lines up with the center of those windows and boom! It takes your eye right out to the skyline.”

Streamlined Simplicity

Because the homeowner’s wife is an avid cook, the kitchen is highly functional and offers plenty of storage thanks to walls of cabinetry by Bell Cabinetry & Design. left The primary bathroom’s floor is tiled in Specialty Tile Products’ tonal Origami Hoshi Marble Mosaic. In contrast to the cool metal tones used elsewhere in the home, rose gold fixtures from Dornbracht add warmth to the space. The tub is by Victoria + Albert. right In keeping with Tretsch’s minimalist architecture, the powder room’s sink from Alape is sleek and columnar. The wall tile is Carrara Stream from Renaissance Tile & Bath.

To soften the architectural details, McBride selected finishes and furnishings that lend a relaxing environment for the client and his family to escape to while in the city. “The homeowner is very busy and travels a lot for work, so he wanted this space to feel peaceful and calm.” That meant a tranquil palette of warm grays, taupes and blues. The myriad wallcoverings used throughout the home feature subtle patterns and textures enhancing both the indoor and outdoor scenery, which McBride kept visually accessible through an unobtrusive combination of retractable window shades and stationary draperies. But as atmospheric as the surroundings may be, the rooms never feel cold due to the designer’s skillful use of layered warmth.

Soft gray hardwood floors enliven each room, while the primary bathroom is softened with rose-gold hardware. Despite its sleek and clean-lined aesthetic, perhaps the most defining feature of the home is its livability. “The homeowner wanted to make sure that all generations of his family would feel comfortable in this space,” says McBride. “Everything is comfortable, but clean and modern too.” In other words, a home that feels as good as it looks. Izlar specifically chose a curved lamp from RH that wouldn’t block the windows.

C

CONSIDERING THE floor-to-ceiling windows, showstopping skyline views and fashion-forward attitude, it’s only fitting that this Buckhead condominium was designed for a homeowner as equally chic and vibrant. “She was very excited to be moving into this new space that had not only spectacular views but was also more transitional and current than the traditional environment

64

she’d been living in for many years,” recalls interior designer Nancy Izlar of Nancy Izlar Interiors, who started the design process with carte blanche. “She’s very stylish, outgoing and loves to host.” Versatility was key when it came to creating a welcoming, but stylish home that was also entertaining-friendly. “We needed it to be functional for when she’s there by herself, and also accommodate a dinner or cocktail party, or having a few girlfriends over,” says Izlar. To create this balance, the designer focused on crafting multifunctional spaces. In the living room, Izlar strategically incorporated an open-back tête-à-tête so that guests could face either the television, the windows or the adjacent sofa and chairs, which could swivel to take advantage of the views if needed. “However she’s entertaining, people can turn their seats around to participate,” says Izlar. To add warmth to the living room’s singular wall, Izlar commissioned a custom metallic finish by artist Mary Meade Evans

that invokes a sense of movement. “It was very stark before, but this added depth and sophistication to the room,” says the designer, who played off the wall’s silvery finish by mixing metals and textures throughout the home. In the dining room, for instance, a Julian Chichester table features an oak tabletop that contrasts with gold table bases, while a burnished gold chandelier from Paul Ferrante creates a “sophisticated but not stuffy” statement overhead. For a playful dose of color, Izlar incorporated pops of burnt orange throughout the home, particularly in the dining room, which features orange Artistic Frame dining chairs, an orange velvet settee and flecks of orange in the intaglios on the wall. She also integrated the hue into the powder room’s silk shades and the bolsters on the living room’s tête-à-tête. “It was our way of adding pops of color without flooding the whole space,” says Izlar. And like the home’s overall scheme, “It’s refined and can stand the test of time.” See Resources, Back of Book. 69

LIFE

END NOTE IN LOVE WITH...

Florals

Garden party-inspired fabrics, wallpapers and furnishings add an exuberant note to any interior. While florals for spring isn’t a new concept, many of today’s designs are often overscale, brilliantly colored and easily mix with other patterns for a layered “more is more” look. And with prints and accessories this pretty, how could there ever be enough?
