Hal Ainsworth Carson McElheney
Landscape architect Carson McElheney was one of the most talented and visionary creatives of his generation, and his star was still ascending before his untimely passing in September. His passion for landscapes—whether intimate city gardens, expansive historical land restorations or newly created waterfowl environments—was boundless. He reveled in the entire process; from researching to creating to installing gardens, McElheney was passionate about crafting a sense of place. Founded in 2011, today Carson McElheney Landscape Architecture & Design is one of the most comprehensive firms in the country. (In 2014, McElheney was named to Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles’ 15 Under 40 list.) He will be remembered for generations through the magnificent landscapes he brought to life, and his firm will expand upon his legacy as it continues to envision new gardens and maintain those already established. 28
For more than 30 years, ADAC showroom AinsworthNoah has been synonymous with refined elegance, and the design industry lost one of its most influential leaders when Hal Ainsworth passed away in early 2021. Whether creating stunning floral arrangements for their exquisite showroom at ADAC, hosting elegant dinner parties at their Paris apartment or establishing the easy mountain elegance for which they were renowned in Highlands and Cashiers, North Carolina, Ainsworth and his husband and business partner, Winton Noah, created extraordinary impact on the way design is not only viewed, but experienced. Today, 35 years later, the fifth-floor ADAC showroom is a nationally renowned landmark destination—a testimony to the the duo’s business acumen and exquisite taste. Ainsworth welcomed all into his world of decorative arts, interior design, floral design and entertaining. The design community is infinitely richer and more colorful thanks to his gracious gifts.

Renowned for his gracious Southern style—both personally and with his interiors—John Banks founded his firm in Atlanta in 1987 and his projects were rooted in classical design principles with a focus on exquisite moldings, tailored draperies and mixing traditional antiques with comfortable upholstery. He loved color, florals and a touch of black and gilt in every room. Banks passed away after a brief bout with cancer, but his impact on Southern design remains and he will be remembered for creating relaxed, but elegant classic American rooms.
An anchor in Atlanta’s design business for 30-plus years, Toby West founded his eponymous firm in 1987 and was renowned for barley twist lamps, Black Forest finds and upholstery swathed in taupe buffalo checks. Toby West Limited was a primary stop on every designer’s ADAC shopping itinerary. In addition to the Atlanta location, West and his partner, Tom Hayes, opened a shop in Highlands, North Carolina. From iron chandeliers and rattan to antlers, West’s aesthetic melded countries and periods, but always with a relaxed, inviting elegance.
Bill Harrison
Genuine passion for the craft—and a reverence for historical precedent—defined both William “Bill” Harrison’s architectural designs and his celebrated multifaceted practice, Harrison Design, which evolved through the decades to include seven domestic offices and one international office, serving clients all over the world. Yet, the impact that Harrison left in his veritable backyard is poignant. The devoted architect’s palatial but inspired residences line the leafy streets of Buckhead and Sandy Springs; are crown jewels of playgrounds like Lake Rabun and Sea Island; and include civic-minded projects such as the clock tower at Charlie Loudermilk Park or an endowed William H. Harrison Chair at his alma mater, Georgia Institute of Technology. Harrison’s legacy of classical and traditional architecture also lives on through an Institute of Classical Architecture & Art scholarship in his name as well as through countless “disciples” whom he mentored, and either remain with Harrison Design or went on to launch their own inspired empires. AH&L remembers Harrison fondly. 29

It’s often said that preserving history can pave the way for a brighter future. Downtown Atlanta’s latest example is the Queen Anne-style RUFUS ROSE HOUSE, a Victorian home designed by architect E.C. Seiz in 1901, undergoing a major overhaul. “The restoration of this property exhibits that both our culture and history matter. This is the last of its kind in Atlanta, and in downtown,” says DAVID MITCHELL, executive director of the ATLANTA PRESERVATION CENTER. “It represents the very ethos of our identity to embrace challenges and show what we have been and continue to be, while focused on growing with a thoughtful appreciation of our story.” The project is being spearheaded by UC ASSET, which acquired the house
in July, with former U.S. Congressman KWANZA HALL leading the charge as part of the company’s historic landmark program. After years of being unoccupied, the home, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places (since 1977) and is designated as a Landmark Building Exterior by the City of Atlanta (since 1989), requires extensive work that will be carefully performed in observance of historic standards. “The restoration can be a catalyst for positive change for the local community and a unifying element for the preservation community in general,” says Hall. “The adaptive reuse offers a great opportunity for coworking and events within a historic property that dates back before Prohibition.”

According to the HEARTH HOME IMPROVEMENT INDEX, a national platform, Atlanta ranks No. 5 in the nation for home improvement projects during the pandemic, with Atlantans joining homeowners around the nation in taking on interior design projects. SUSIE PRINCE of Atlanta-based SUSIE MAE DESIGN (susiemaedesign.com) has seen the biggest increase in kitchen remodeling projects, as well as additions such as decks and porches to make her clients’ outdoor spaces more inviting. “Nearly everyone I’m working with lately is willing to take bigger design risks to make their home their own, with less concern about resale and more focus on making it function well and inspire them,” says Prince. 34
Midtown is making way for a new mixed-use development by Portman Residential (portman-
residential.com), a new company affiliated with Atlanta-based Portman Holdings. The 29-floor building at the corner of Spring Street and 10th Street NW will serve as the first phase of the 1000 Spring project.

Naomi Von Habersham JUST LIKE LAST YEAR, 2021 has been a rollercoaster of a ride. After jockeying for vaccination appointments and searching for toilet paper during yet another shortage, we deserve a joyous and stress-free holiday season. Some people predicted that life post COVID-19, or at least post vaccination, would be like the roaring twenties. That certainly hasn’t been my experience. I’m still dining out early-bird style and avoiding large crowds, but if your social life even remotely resembles the 1920s, bully for you. Instead of pining for glittering soirees this season, I’m feeling sentimental, even old-fashioned, when it comes to holiday merrymaking. For the first time in decades, I’m baking and decorating my very own gingerbread house. Just thinking about the heavenly fragrance of freshly baked gingerbread mingled with frosting and candy canes puts me in a nostalgic frame of mind. My gift-giving this year has also become simpler and, I hope, more meaningful. Trinkets that feel like token gestures don’t seem right at the moment. Instead, those on my gift list will receive spiced pecans, date-nut balls or candied grapefruit peel, all made by yours truly. (To my friends, don’t worry. I’ve learned my way around the kitchen over the past year and a half!) Even this year’s Christmas decorations are like a step into the past. Remember those Colonial Williamsburg apple tree centerpieces that were practically holiday requirements decades ago? I made one for my dining table this year and topped it with a pineapple. It looks smashing, but I do hope it doesn’t attract bugs. In fact, almost all of my seasonal decorations came from nature, including mistletoe, boxwood, Magnolia leaves and more pine boughs than I know what to do with. This is not to say that I won’t be indulging in a few luxuries. It wouldn’t be Christmas to me without Rigaud Cyprès candles, Tiffany & Co. holiday china and a Christmas Eve feast of blini and caviar, washed down by a bottle of Veuve Clicquot. No matter how you celebrate the season or decorate your home, may you have the happiest of holidays, and here’s to a brighter New Year!

Owned by IPIC Theaters, the nearly 6,700-square-foot restaurant transports guests with its warm, welcoming spirit. Light woods mingle with leather and linen upholstery, while private and semi-private spaces visually separate the layout into quieter pods. The bar takes center stage with open shelving that hangs from the ceiling, whereas the folding door wall—which opens to a square-facing patio and trellis flowing with greenery and string lights—offers a light breeze and true al fresco dining. Matching the comfort and joy provided by the interior design is the menu. Pasta here is as fresh as it gets, as the kitchen’s visible pasta-making station invites guests to witness the precision put into each of their meals. Think offerings like linguine with littleneck clams, gnocchetti with sausage and white wine butter sauce, an assortment of decadent raviolis and more. Pair with an antipasto—such as the polpo arrosto (Spanish octopus)—or one of Serena’s seasonal wines or handcraft cocktails for the ultimate Italian experience. Though the food and design are hard to match, perhaps the best part of Serena is its buzzing energy, one that encourages guests to do as the Italians do and sit down and stay awhile. “Food is meant to bring people together, and we wanted to do that in a beautiful and calming space,” says Kelsey Mahoney, senior marketing manager at IPIC Theaters. “We hope that Atlantans feel wowed by Serena’s food and ambiance, but more importantly, feel at home.” serena-pastificio.com

M
MANY PEOPLE DREAM ABOUT moving back into their childhood home, but few have the opportunity. When HuffDewberry received a call to update a family home, they knew the project would be enormously fulfilling. The traditional home was built in the 1970s by the owner’s parents, and not only was it dark and dated, but the spaces weren’t conducive for an active family with a penchant for collecting contemporary

art. “As soon as Will [Huff] and I toured the house, we realized that the scope of work would entail a full renovation,” says designer Heather Dewberry. The owners had long admired the work of Spanish architect Luis Bustamante, and his clean aesthetic mixed with antiques provided the perfect inspiration for the project. “Our job was to incorporate the pieces they had inherited into the remodeled childhood home of the owner, but to use a light hand in mixing old and new in order to ensure it properly reflected them— relaxed, welcoming, warm and generous,” says Dewberry. Architect Ross Piper designed the impactful changes that honor the past while creating an environment more appropriate for today’s lifestyle. “Although the footprint of the house remained the same, opening up the back of the house with glass to permit more light was paramount to creating a more transitional home,” says Piper. “Our goal was to soften and simplify the house.” Lighter floors lend contemporary air to spaces with family antiques, while the new kitchen adds polish to the open living and family dining areas.

As longtime collectors of contemporary art, the homeowners’ assemblage of paintings drove many design decisions. “We knew their art would be principal, so we designed quieter interiors that focused on line and structure so that their works could take center stage,” says Dewberry. Other details in the house were equally specific to the owners such as the dining room wallcovering. The husband is an avid golfer of U.K. courses, so Huff-Dewberry commissioned the custom mural to evoke a pastoral landscape. “We decided that a subtle monochromatic approach would be less formal, more welcoming and remind him of the English and Scottish countryside,” says Dewberry. In decorating the home for the holidays, Dewberry provided a deft hand to create a refined environment. A palette of green and white with silver and gold accents fills the house with a sophisticated holiday elegance. The lush garland finished with copper bells and a blue bow greets visitors in the foyer while white lights flicker on the trees in the living room and sunroom. “We approached this more as a ‘winter wonderland’ with a quieter and lighter feeling,” says Dewberry. After almost half a century, this home continues to be filled with happy family memories. “We trusted Heather and Will implicitly because they wanted this home to reflect us and it truly does—they are the dream team,” says the homeowner. JAMES FARMER IS ONE of America’s preeminent experts on gracious Southern living, and when he entertains for the holidays, it’s a feast for the senses. “Everything must be fresh, fun and festive,” says Farmer. From cocktails to dessert, from wreaths and garlands to table settings and linens—every detail is curated by Farmer to create an unforgettable experience. Designed by Robert Norris of Spitzmiller & Norris, Farmdale is the designer’s personal home and just one of the many homes on his family’s land. Beamed ceilings made from reclaimed wood add patina while bricks made from Georgia red clay that were acquired when an old church was torn down in Macon are just two of the spectacular elements that make Farmdale feel as though it’s been there for generations. Inside, holiday decorations layered throughout the house sparkle with joviality. 65

Boughs of garland and abundant wreaths strewn across the front of the house greet visitors, including Farmer’s large family that enjoys a progressive feast of brunch and dinner on Christmas Day. However, as much as Farmer loves to create holiday environments, he confesses, “I don’t want to rearrange the whole house for Christmas.” His signature method for holiday decorating involves using a basic foundation with details that change every year so that the colors, decorations and food are never the same. Farmer is inspired by different places, periods, palettes and palates, but he always makes it relatable to his beloved South. He delights in Christmas coral as well as variations of the family recipe-made Christmas coconut cake, which for this year, is the cranberry version. The details that matter most to Farmer are longevity and freshness. “I focus most on what is seasonal and what will last,” says Farmer. Pots of paperwhites, amaryllis, nandina, 67

For pops of color, Farmer recommends a few fresh buds. “Satellite flowers are easy to change so I use small vases on the dining table, the Welsh cupboard and the sideboard in order to keep flowers fresh and colors bright,” he says. Recognizing that many emotions accompany the holidays, the designer notes, “The holidays mean comfort and joy, but it can also be bittersweet.” Finding warmth with loved ones, cooking family recipes and dining at a table set with generations of family china, linens and silver are some of the ways Farmer melds the past with the present. “I’m unapologetic about my Southern style, and using things that have been forgotten and found captures that family connection for me,” he notes. FOR TWO OF ATLANTA’S MOST CREATIVE TALENTS, entertaining at home is truly an art form. From their Buckhead residence perched high atop one of Atlanta’s premier residential buildings, interior designer John Oetgen and brand strategist John Lineweaver regularly rewrite the rules of entertaining—whether it’s an intimate affair or a big blowout. And when it comes to imbuing good cheer into one of the most cheerful of all holidays, New Year’s Eve, they orchestrate an elegant and ebullient soiree that mixes high and low, old and new, and formality and frivolity with aplomb—that is, when they’re not toasting the new year in one of their favorite haunts such as Paris or St. Barths. Lucky are the guests who find themselves in the good graces of Oetgen and Lineweaver for an intimate evening at home on this festive night. “I think of our dining room as sort of a circus tent,” says Oetgen with a laugh. “It’s like a stage where anything can happen.” Indeed, the room’s backdrop—walls enveloped in a riotous mix of striped wallpapers in different colors and varying widths and an

The tablescape’s mix of flatware, china, linens and silver features an assortment of new finds, heirloom pieces and cherished objects collected from their world travels. “I love modernity, but I also love antiquity, and appreciate the new as much as the old,” says Oetgen of the mix. For this evening’s event, emerald and cobalt colored glassware is eyecatching and unexpected. “We wanted to move away from just gold and silver,” says Lineweaver. Surrounding the table, three sets of French chairs from different periods, bedecked in the same gray velvet for uniformity, work as a whole and can go with any sort of event theme or palette one could imagine. “They’re like party guests!” says Oetgen of their shapely silhouettes and stalwart presence. Unlike their weekend home in Highlands, North Carolina, which features a large communal gathering space, and where entertaining is a bit more fluid and casual, their Buckhead residence allows any sort of get-together to reveal itself in different stages, much like acts of a play. 80

different stages, much like acts of a play. “In the mountains, we do more passed, familystyle or buffet meals. In the city, it’s a little bit more formal and set,” says Lineweaver. Opening act features cocktails and appetizers served in the living room. Next up, is the meal itself in the dining room. Before the final curtain drops, the dessert course is served in the den, a space closed off to guests until the last minute. “It’s three different environments for one night,” says Oetgen. “They’re like episodes, and I think episodes are far more effective than one long drawn-out dinner.” After the doors are flung open to the space, guests are ushered into a festive room festooned with balloons, an array of tasty French-inspired confections, and, of course, Champagne is at the ready for the celebratory midnight toast. From their bird’s-eye view, the downtown skyline glitters in the distance. As the corks pop and fireworks light up Atlanta’s night sky, Oetgen, Lineweaver and their guests peer out over the balcony, welcoming the sights—and the new year—ahead. See Resources, Back of Book.

The welcoming lobby shows off rich marble floors and a double circular staircase for a bit of early 20th-century drama. The trifecta of Fortuny fabrics, Murano glass and plush velvet upholstery lends a classical glamour to the decor, yet it feels very modern and fresh. Staterooms feature handcrafted Savoir beds of England along with Asprey London bath amenities, and more storage space than most river ships offer. Food is always central to a cruise, and Uniworld’s river ships are known for it. In Venice, guests have a chance to accompany the ship’s chef team to the Rialto Market to watch their careful selection of the freshest produce and seafood. Back on
board, farm-to-ship cuisine—breakfast, lunch and dinner—is served in the Rialto. La Cantinetta, the “hidden gem” private dining area, can be reserved for private dinners of up to eight people, and there is a pizza café, Cielo’s, on the upper deck, available by reservation. Although the interiors are unparalleled in their aesthetic appeal and the cuisine is world-class, it’s the bottomless passion of the staff that is truly on another level. This is a floating boutique hotel for fewer than 130 guests with one of the highest staff-toguest ratios on the rivers. That’s as intimate and indulgent as you can get. for each of S.S. La Venezia’s bespoke excursions, starting in Venice for a private guided tour of Palazzo Ducale (Doge Palace) and an exclusive twilight tour of St. Mark’s Basilica. On a visit to the fishing village of Chioggia at the south end of the Lagoon, indulge in local culture with a Bragozzo boat ride or a bike tour. A mile-long market is set up in the city’s main street, Corso del Popolo, where pop-up stalls sell everything from clothing to kitchen gadgets. At one end of the street is the giant fish market, and at the other is Piazzetta Vigo where you’ll find bars, souvenir shops and sometimes live entertainment. Farther north on the Lagoon is the island of Burano with its bright crayon-colored houses and renowned lace shops lining the streets. There is enough free time built into the schedule for independent exploration—go shopping or pop into a bar (what Italians call a café) for a leisurely espresso or Prosecco. Or, opt to stay on board and relax on the sundeck with an Aperol Spritz, the official cocktail of Venice. Venice turned 1,600 this year and is still going strong but is moving at a much slower pace. For 16 years, The Resort at Paws Up, a 37,000acre ranch about an hour outside Missoula, Montana, has hosted families of adventure seekers and nature lovers looking for a unique—yet high-end—all-inclusive vacation. Last summer, the storied resort unveiled an intimate adults-only resort-within-the-resort called the Green O. The resort, whose name is a play on the town of Greenough and its founder, early Montana rancher Paul Greenough, is on the same property as The Resort at Paws Up, but it manages to feel worlds apart. The sense of rousing activity at the main resort is almost nonexistent, but the luxury quotient remains the same—if not higher. As you drive up the quiet road surrounded by towering pines with golden sunlight filtering through, the stress of the outside world starts to melt away.

Tucked amid the forest are 12 stunning and spacious one-bedroom “haus” accommodations, each displaying one of four architectural designs. Guests can choose from a Tree Haus, Green Haus, Round Haus or Light Haus. The Tree Haus is raised 23 feet above the ground amid the evergreens, while the Round Haus features a curved design with 180-degree windows into the woods. All of the homes feature extensive outdoor decks with hot tubs, multiple fireplaces, a porch swing, sleek eco-kitchenettes and deep soaking tubs. The chic woodland-inspired design is modern and cozy, with luxury touches like plush linen bedding, custom artwork and bespoke furnishings. Sitting inside or out, you can’t help but feel completely immersed in the silent and serene forest—you might even see some deer mingling among the trees outside your floor-to-ceiling windows. When you do feel ready to leave your haus, your first stop should be the Social Haus, the heart of the Green O. It’s there where you’ll partake in some of the most exciting and delicious food in Montana. Daily breakfast, lunch and a 10-ish course dinner by executive chef Brandon Cunningham use the region’s seasonal bounty to cook up eclectic and inventive Western dishes like Montana whitefish caviar with homemade potato chips, a Chinese spin on buffalo meat with snow peas, daikon radish, and XO sauce, and a showstopping kohlrabi custard with pickled green apple and dill gorgeously served inside a hollowed out kohlrabi. James Beard Award-nominated pastry chef Krystle Swenson’s delectable creations are the perfect way to end the meal and start each day—you’ll get some delivered to your front porch with coffee every morning. Aside from indulging and relaxing amid nature, guests have access to all the ranch activities at Paws Up, including horseback riding, all-terrain vehicle adventures, fly-fishing and rafting on the Blackfoot River and cattle drives. Guests can use the included Lexus SUVs to shuttle across the property. To keep the adult theme going and unwind after a day of adventure, be sure to schedule some time at Spa Town, where the treatment rooms are cozy teepees and you can gaze out on a pastoral meadow while getting your treatment. From land to sea and thrilling adventure to beachin’ it, nature’s bounty is abundant on the Caribbean Netherlands island of Bonaire Written by LAUREN IVERSON “ARE YOU HERE TO DIVE?” It’s not a peculiar question for my plane neighbor to ask, given the flight is full of eager divers headed to beautiful Bonaire—the Caribbean Netherlands island located just 50 miles north of Venezuela. Thanks to the lively marine sanctuary that stretches its entire perimeter, Bonaire is known as one of the best shore-diving destinations in the Caribbean. Much to my seatmate’s surprise, it’s everything but diving I’m looking to explore here. The smallest of the Caribbean’s ABC islands, Bonaire is 111 square miles of desert 90
terrain. You won’t find many palm trees or stoplights, but you’ll see flamingos fluffing their feathers (there’s more of them on the island than people), gentle wild donkeys, and rich historical notes seen in the salt pans, lighthouses and Washington Slagbaai National Park. Opened in 1969, the park is home to an array of plant and animal species. With the purchase of a STINAPA tag for entry into the park, visitors are directly contributing to the island’s extensive conservation efforts. Hop out of the car at one of the many beaches located throughout the reserve, and if you’re feeling brave, take the plunge off the cliff at Boca Slagbaai. (Speaking from experience, keep your body straight when falling if you want to avoid a sizable bruise.) After exploring the park or lounging at the beach, Bonaire’s culinary scene is ready to serve you. Sebastian’s, Boudoir and Ingridiënts are all island favorites, and for those who want to eat like a local, the

iguana soup from Posada Para Mira is prime for the adventurous eater. Looking for something to wash down your meal? Make your way to The Cadushy Distillery where they brew liqueurs from the abounding Kadushi cacti. It would be no trip to Bonaire without a little thrill. Strap into a “blokart” at Bonaire Landsailing Adventures and use the wind to power you around a figure-eight track or head to Jibe City—the world-famous windsurfing beach—to learn how to glide through the water using nothing but the ocean breeze. For something more zen, pristine snorkeling at Klein Bonaire will open your eyes to an unfamiliar world where schools of colorful fish welcome you into their home. Top off the evening with a sunset chill-and-grill catamaran cruise from Epic Tours Bonaire before heading back to the luxurious Harbour Village to rest for the night. Enjoy a nightcap at the open-air La Balandra restaurant, or hop in the ocean for an end-of-night snorkel, which will bring you face-to-face with enormous tarpons. Bonaire’s “once a visitor, always a friend” slogan holds true, and though their scenic settings and thrilling activity offerings are top of the line, it’s the welcoming locals that are the heart of the island.
