FROM THE PUBLISHER

If 2020 has taught us anything, it is that we need each other. Our family, our friends and our community are important and provide a true safety net that serves to protect us from life’s uncertainties. The home improvement community has remained unwavering in the face of this year’s never-ending surprises. When the pandemic hit, businesses and professional organizations immediately went into safety mode—reviewing procedures and guidelines to ensure that they could continue to service the needs of their community and their customers. Many of the projects they were called for were out of necessity—new home offices, dedicated space for children to do school work virtually and outdoor spaces for some much-needed entertainment. This issue is all about beautiful kitchens and bathrooms. It is pure eye candy that is meant to inspire and inform you of the many creative individuals who can help you create a unique, functional space for you. We called out to the Kitchen & Bath community to submit their best project from the last 18 months (we usually limit it to 12 months, but hey, it is 2020!). Then, we put it out to you, our readers, along with the industry folks to vote for your favorites. We received thousands of votes! These projects will introduce you to several professionals in the industry who can help you get the kitchen or bath of your dreams. This year we also added our nonprofessional category. These projects were submitted by fearless homeowners who decided to take their decorating dreams into their own hands. And of all the submissions, there was one clear favorite—Erin Marshall (right) of the home decor blog Live Pretty on a Penny!

She revamped her bathroom all on her own, installing shiplap and a new sink countertop.

We asked what she would do differently with this project, and she answered, “I would’ve done it sooner!” You can see more of Erin's projects at www.liveprettyonapenny.com For more resources on creating the kitchen or bath you’ve been dreaming of go to www.atlantahomeimprovement.com. SHOWER ENCLOSURES

Q

A frameless glass shower door seems to be the popular choice but what are the pros and cons of that option?

A

HVAC

GUTTERS

Q

How can I guarantee my house will maintain curb appeal after new gutter installation?

A

Frameless shower enclosures are a vast improvement over the flimsy framed units of the past. With their simple design and minimal moving parts, cleaning and maintenance is a snap. There is a small David Drexler airspace around the perimeter of frameless doors, so during planning make sure your shower head or body jets do not spray directly at the door. Otherwise a rubber gasket may be required to make your shower water tight.

A great way to achieve curb appeal is to first choose the right gutter protection system. The gutter needs to be large enough to handle Tom DiGregorio and Joe Rusk light to heavy rains, yet be stylish enough that it will complement the exterior. Once again, this is best accomplished by choosing a quality product and the right company. If either one of these steps are omitted most likely the homeowner will not be happy with the end result.

Vertical blinds and shades are most often used for sliding doors or larger windows. Sliding doors open from side to side and vertical treatments do the same, often with minimal stacking to Andrea and Sean Zare allow for a full view. We offer many vertical options including blinds, drapery and fresh alternatives. Some of these options include Hunter Douglas Luminettes, Skyline Panels and Vertiglide.

We recommend variable speed furnaces with variable speed compressors. A variable speed heating system controls airflow to provide better temperature and humidity control, and air distribution. Compared to a conventional single-speed furnace, a variable speed furnace uses about two-thirds less electricity. Furnaces with variable speed fans work well with other energy-efficient Bill Mashraky upgrades such as zoned heating controls and smart thermostats.

WATERPROOFING

Q

Where does it make sense to install vertical blinds and why?

Q

What type of heating system should I get and why?

How can I prepare my garage door for winter?

Minor issues can be magnified after days of cold weather. Here are 4 tasks to help keep your garage door safe and reliable through the winter. 1. Inspect and clean the rubber seal strip on the bottom of your door. 2. Make sure the tracks on both sides of the door are clear of sticks and leaves. 3. Make sure the opener and remote batteries have John Nale full power. 4. Schedule a garage door tune-up by a trained technician.

Q

What causes standing water in my crawl space?

A

Water in your crawl space is caused by bad drainage around your house and a lack of proper waterproofing of the crawl space during original construction. Crawl spaces in Georgia are not typically waterproofed because they are not to be used as finished living space. An Engineered Solutions project manager can design a permanent fix for the issue. Sustainable Living A Few Common Solar Myths Sunlight—a phenomenon most experience every day and tend to take for granted. But the sun’s rays are so much more than a convenient source of light; they are also an unlimited supply of clean energy. Imagine a cascade of bills and coins falling from the sky and clattering off into your gutter, never to be used. With solar arrays, you can harvest that free energy and use it to offset both your power bill and carbon footprint. You'll also be cutting down on other pollutants like carbon monoxide, mercury, particulate matter, nitrogen dioxide and sulfur dioxide, lead, VOCs, arsenic; it goes on and on with coal.

People who go solar see an average of a 40-60% reduction in their power bill.

So why isn’t everyone racing to go solar as quickly as possible and start saving now? Well, there are some unfortunate misconceptions about the uses and effectiveness of solar power clouding the collective consciousness. Here are some common myths about solar that the experts at Better Tomorrow Solar encounter most often and the truth behind them.

MYTH: Solar is complicated

FACT: Modern-day solar arrays function on a ‘set it and forget it’ basis. Once they are mounted and the process of interconnection with the electric grid has been finished, they will quietly absorb sunlight and power your home for decades to come with little to no maintenance required.

MYTH: Solar is expensive

Photo courtesy of Better Tomorrow Solar.

FACT: If you can afford to pay your current power bill, you can afford to go solar. There are many game-changing options for financing solar and people are making the leap for as little as $0 down and payments that are less than the savings on their power bills.

Verified Foundation Repair Contractor 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015

People who go solar see an average of a 40-60% reduction in their power bill. In addition, there are often local incentives for solar and generous utility rebates. For the remainder of 2020, there is a 26% Federal tax credit on solar. This will drop to 22% in 2021.

MYTH: Solar brings down property value

FACT: Solar is a sleek, chic addition to a rooftop. Not only that, but there is a growing body of evidence that a home solar system increases the resale value of a home. Berkeley Lab found that a standard solar system installation increased the value of a home by about $21,000. The Appraisal Institute found that solar homes increase $20 in value for every $1.00 in annual energy savings. Better Tomorrow Solar is a turnkey residential and commercial solar installation firm out of Atlanta, GA. We are a local, mission-focused organization committed to growing the presence of solar energy in Georgia. For more information, visit www.bettertomorrowsolar.com

pumpkins galore

S

ince 1976, the Atlanta Community Food Bank has been distributing food to nonprofits that assist families in need across the city.

Photo courtesy of (upper right) the Atlanta Community Food Bank, photography by Paul Consolini.

Around the holidays, the Food Bank always receives an influx of canned pumpkin, which is normally baked into sweets like pies and muffins. To provide a healthier alternative, their registered dieticians, Joy Goetz and Kristen Elliott, created this chili recipe.

PUMPKIN CHILI Cook time: 30 minutes

Ingredients: 1 tablespoon vegetable, canola or olive oil 1 small onion, diced 1 jalapeno, deseeded and chopped 2 cups kale, roughly chopped 3 cloves garlic, chopped or 1 teaspoon of garlic powder

Toppings: Chopped green onions Low-fat Greek yogurt

4 cups water

Sliced avocado

1 can (15oz.) diced tomatoes, canned in juice (do not drain)

Directions:

1 tablespoon chili powder 1 tablespoon ground cumin Black pepper to taste 1 can (15oz.) black beans, no salt added, drained 1 can (15oz.) pumpkin puree 1 can (6oz.) tomato paste

Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. When hot, add the diced onion, jalapeno and garlic, and sautĂŠ until onion is soft, about 5 minutes. In a large pot, add water, kale, tomatoes (with juice), chili powder, cumin and black pepper. Cover and bring to a boil over medium-high heat. Add onion and jalapeno mixture, pumpkin puree, tomato paste and black beans. Stir well to be sure that the pumpkin blends into the chili. Return lid to pot and simmer for 20-25 minutes. Serve hot and top with plain low-fat Greek yogurt, chopped green or white onions and avocado.

Serving Up Appliances Budget and Style By Jennifer Colosimo

W

hen opportunity knocks, you open the door. For Allen Jones, that was a refrigerator door. It’s been more than 20 years ago now, but the story begins with Allen shopping

around for a scratch-and-dent fridge he could use to stock cold drinks for the employees at his landscaping company. He found such a great deal that it sparked a small business on the side, one he carried for almost a decade. Soaking up appliance knowledge and reigniting his passion for helping people, he decided to turn his warehouse and showroom into something more official and founded NorthPoint Appliance (NPA). Now, he’s Alpharetta’s premier dealer of luxury appliances, and the story isn’t finished yet.

“Our customers have our cell numbers,” says Allen. “I like to know people, know their stories, talk to people and build those relationships. And that allows us to inform the customer better. We want them to know we’re here anytime to answer questions, troubleshoot and keep them up to date. I think that’s the biggest difference between our team and who you’d find at a big box store. We have specific knowledge on appliances and we’re passionate about sharing it with the consumer, so that they can make the best possible purchase.” Being able to call NPA and speak to the owner doesn’t hurt that reputation, either. In fact, it’s part of a seamless customer service mission that makes it hard to shop anywhere else. From the first phone call asking questions to the showroom visits, installation and user experience, NPA (maybe even Allen) sees to it personally. And they do it well, because together, the team has nearly a century of experience.

Since inception, Allen has continued to establish a brand that delivers a reputation to beat, along with the latest appliances to outfit high-end custom kitchens, break rooms, locker rooms, new construction and more. What he’s done differently since then, is employed an entire team that puts the customer first by being approachable, extremely knowledgeable and responsive.

That experience is key, because, as Allen says, not all things are equal when it comes to kitchen appliance packages. What brand AMY & ALLEN JONES and style works for one customer, may be superfluous for the next. It depends on a homeowner’s style, their cooking habits, how much they know about cooking and, of course, what kind of investment they want to make. “People come in from all different areas to see us and some of those people have done their research, but others know nothing and that’s when we get to teach them,” Allen says. “Having experienced sales people allows the customer to make a better decision based on what they need.”

WE WANT THEM TO KNOW WE’RE HERE ANYTIME TO ANSWER QUESTIONS, TROUBLESHOOT AND KEEP THEM UP TO DATE. I THINK THAT’S THE

BIGGEST DIFFERENCE BETWEEN OUR TEAM AND WHO YOU’D FIND AT A BIG BOX STORE. —ALLEN JONES

The same goes for corporate clients. From the suites and locker rooms at Mercedes Benz Stadium to break rooms in high-rise buildings and high schools, to the new construction of high-end homes that provide Allen’s team a seat at the creative table, it’s a passion fully realized—and one that puts other people in charge of stocking the fridge.

On Trend NorthPoint Appliance services customers from intown Atlanta to Lake Oconee to the North Georgia Mountains and though the neighborhoods may look different, the latest in kitchen trends is very much the same. Here are Allen’s favorite ways to fashion kitchens: Large French Door Refrigeration lets the customer make a big statement in the kitchen. Steam Ovens and Coffee Systems cater to specific talent and taste for people staying at home more. Integrated units complement the modern farmhouse trend with cleaner lines and a subtle presence. Something else that’s the same? No matter what trend you follow, the service you get at NPA never goes out of style.

Fall in Love with Fescue By Kim Ashby MacColeman Fall in Love with Fescue Georgia’s wooded neighborhoods and mountain hideaways provide much needed shade from the blistering summer heat. They also lend a sweet, comforting feel to any home, with unmatched curb appeal as fall’s colors burst on the scene. However, growing Bermuda BERMUDA grass in heavily wooded areas can be a challenge, because it thrives in sunny conditions. And while FESCUE Bermuda FESCUE MEANS GREEN GRASS ALL YEAR LONG. is excellent for hot, dry summers, when the cool chill of autumn arrives this grass variety goes dormant, leaving perfectly manicured yards looking dull. Fescue is different. It’s a cool season grass variety that keeps its rich, green color all year long.

grows well in the sun, but also can handle a great deal of shade, so enjoy your trees as well as your verdant green grass.

Blades of Glory Tall Fescue also requires less mowing, so you can spend more time enjoying your yard. This medium-blade grass thrives at two to three-inch heights; in fact, those long blades help hold in moisture throughout the fall and winter. In the summer, Fescue does require deep watering, but in the fall you can pull back on the frequency, especially if Mother Nature provides consistent rain.

Premium Sod with Deep Roots Rebel® Supreme Fescue boasts a dense root system that holds moisture in, which is beneficial during dry spells or even prolonged droughts. WINNER Joe Dan Rogers JDR Enterprises

Joe Dan Rogers founded JDR Enterprises in 2004 and has been remodeling ever since. This awe-inspiring kitchen belongs to a client who asked for “a gathering

ample space to work with, not only does the design have room for the whole family, but also two sinks, two dishwashers and a 48” range. Joe Dan says that it took some convincing to get the client on board with his design, but that the payoff was worth it. The beautiful sapphire backsplash from AKDO was the inspiration for the entire design.

Jones Design Associates Jeremy Jones, Owner of Jones Design Associates, was given free rein for this kitchen design, with the client only asking for something “darker, different, clean and modern.” He delivered with a design of beautiful contrasting wood finishes, offset by accents of concrete and steel. And it’s built with top function in mind, too. “The asymmetrical layout of the kitchen is on purpose; the sink and range aren’t aligned so one person can be cooking and another can be doing clean up,” says Jeremy. “None of the appliance doors can hit other appliances when opened between the back wall and the island.” www.jonesdesignassociates.com

Vice President and Principal Designer for Custom Dwellings Stephanie Ives had her work cut out for her when she needed to come up with a kitchen remodel that could incorporate 15 appliances into 480 sq. ft. of space. The space, which includes a wine dispenser and sparkling water faucet by Grohe Blue, is designed to inspire the homeowner in her cooking. “The key to this updated traditional style kitchen renovation was designing a series of glamorous bright white spaces which would support entertaining throughout the day and into the evening,” Stephanie explains. www.customdwellings.com

KITCHEN Calvin Watt

C’VION Company

Calvin Watt, Principal Designer of The C’VION Company, faced several challenges when doing this striking kitchen remodel, but you’d never know it from the end result. When removing the dividing wall to the great room to create an open floor plan, the lines of the two spaces were off-center, requiring them to move the range and vent hood to line up with the placement of the fireplace at the other end. Another challenge from the removal of the wall was the loss of cabinet space, which Calvin says he made up for by enlarging the island and making some hidden cabinets on the bar side along with a hidden pantry. www.thecvioncompanyllc.com

BATHROOM Eric Koehler Southland Development Services Eric Koehler, Owner of Southland Development Services, partnered with Kit Castaldo Design for this project and was challenged to create privacy in the oversized shower of this large master bath. By creating wing walls along the entrance, he eliminated the need for full shower doors and created natural privacy by disrupting the lines of sight. “When a shower is this big you really don’t need shower glass,” Eric explains. Niches were also added to the backside of the walls to provide unseen storage. The large tub lit by the natural light of the skylight is the highlight of this design and a huge hit with the client. www.southlanddevelopmentservices.com

Whitney Jones, Owner of Wynter House Designs, jumped straight into design after receiving her BFA from Georgia State. She took this narrow master bath to new heights by utilizing materials with a lot of contrast throughout the space, allowing the eye to wander and avoid creating the feeling of a tunnel. “I was able to ground the layered patterns with classic black and white while adding warmth with the natural walnut,” Whitney explains, fulfilling the clients’ request for a large double vanity and single sink with a custom piece she designed herself. “It’s an updated space that is crisp and comfortable and will last for many years to come,” she says. www.wynterhousedesigns.com

Tonic Design Studio Willem Stear is the owner of Tonic Design Studio and has been in the kitchen and bath business for 16 years. He was his own client for this breathtaking bathroom remodel. This particular space had no windows or natural light to use, so Willem used a stunning piece of onyx to create some drama. Mirrored walls help reflect the light and the warmth of the stone’s colors, creating an intimate, spa-like feel. When asked about the design’s inspiration, Willem says, “My home was built in the late 60s-early 70s. I wanted to do a modern interpretation of 70s materials and finishes.” www.tonic-designstudio.com Bathroom Details: Onyx Slab: Walker Zanger

Marble tile: Stoneluxe

Fixtures: Aquabrass

Tips to Make it Yours: Use lighting and reflective surfaces to brighten up a space with no natural light Create a dramatic focal point with a large scale piece of stone or tile Simplicity is key, don’t overthink the space

PUBLISHER'S PICK Sarah Jordan Construction Ahead Sarah Jordan, Design Manager for Construction Ahead, created this light and airy kitchen for a client who was looking for a sun-filled space for her family to gather while she prepared meals. “I wanted the island to be a special feature of the space. Keeping it light with a ceruse finish gave the space texture and good contrast from the white cabinets,” Sarah explains. The large window was a request from the client, but it also cut down on cabinet space. So Sarah utilized interior organizational components to make the most out of the remaining space. www.constructionahead.net

Kitchen Details: Cabinets: Kemper Kitchen Island: Dynasty Omega Fixtures: Elkay & Brizo Tips to Make it Yours: Don’t be afraid to mix your finishes Do what you love, it’s your space Be smart with storage, more cabinets doesn’t always means better use of space

The Heart of Home Improvement returning a hero home A safe and healthy home is always essential, especially as COVID-19 continues to impact families in Atlanta and nationwide. Until recently, local Navy veteran Wilson Mallory, 75, and his wife of more than 25 years, Cornelia, weren’t so lucky. Wilson, who is a double amputee, has owned his southwest Atlanta home for more than 30 years. He had recently been in and out of nursing homes, and after suffering repeated falls at home, was admitted to a nursing home for good more than a year ago. When COVID-19 struck, Wilson became infected and was unable to receive visits from Cornelia who, left home alone, began to suffer from mental and physical difficulties of her own.

THE TEAM INSTALLS A WHEELCHAIR RAMP FOR WILSON

Luckily, the couple’s children stepped in. They reached out to Rebuilding Together Atlanta, the local affiliate of a national nonprofit that provides free essential home repairs to neighbors in need. The organization, in partnership with Marietta-based multifamily home builder TuckerCraft Inc., turned the Mallory family home into an accessible living space that Wilson was able to safely return to. The repair work, all donated by TuckerCraft, included the installation of a ramp at the front door and exterior handrails, as well as a wheelchair accessible shower, vanity and toilet, plus the widening of doorways throughout the home. Wilson also came home to updated landscaping, fresh coats of paint, a cleaned out garage and clean gutters.

“TuckerCraft strives to have a lasting positive impact on the communities we serve and was grateful for the opportunity to partner with Rebuilding Together to bring Wilson safely home to Cornelia,” said Danny Jordan, partner and co-owner at TuckerCraft. “We hope these renovations allow the Mallory family to safely age in place and bring them many more years of happiness and health in their home.”

“This house needed more work than our family alone could handle,” said Keisha McCartha, the couple’s daughter. “This renovation—and the ability for my parents to once again live together under the same roof—makes all the difference.”
