he field of construction isn't a boys' club anymore. According to the Bureau of Labor Statisticsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; 2017 Population Survey, nine percent

of those employed in construction are women. From flaunting stereotypes to breaking through barriers, here, six of Atlanta's home improvement trailblazers talk about what it's like to work in the industry and what they see as the future of diversity in that arena.

Laura Bean Tenuto, the daughter in the mother-daughter duo at 5th Generation Contracting, Inc., talks about her favorite sloganâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;the Nike brandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s iconic tagline â&#x20AC;&#x153;Just Do It.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;That slogan sums it up for me,â&#x20AC;? she explains. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It reminds me to stay competitive in my career.â&#x20AC;? After she graduated from college and with several years in sales, she decided to â&#x20AC;&#x153;just do itâ&#x20AC;? and join her motherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s contracting business. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been challenging, but also extremely rewarding.â&#x20AC;?

Melissa Bean says of working with her daughter, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Lauraâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a very independent, strong businesswoman. She recognized that we needed a design manager to hold clientsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; hands through the remodeling process. She developed the role and sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s knocking it out of the park. Clients value her opinionâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s capable and they know it.â&#x20AC;? Melissa is no stranger to â&#x20AC;&#x153;just doing itâ&#x20AC;? either. Construction is a field she is intimately familiar with, as sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the fifth generation in a family of contractors. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I love construction and wanted my own company. I felt I could do so much better than what I was seeing in the industry,â&#x20AC;? she remembers. â&#x20AC;&#x153;In the early years, there were crews who didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want to work with a woman. I thought, thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s OKâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;they can go work for someone else. And a lot of times, if men came into our office, theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d pass right by me and look for a man to talk to.â&#x20AC;? But, Melissa says that she considers her gender an advantage in her business. She points out that, often, women are alone in their homes with a construction crew during a remodeling project. â&#x20AC;&#x153;My clients know that this is a woman-owned companyâ&#x20AC;&#x201D; men who work here have a female boss and, obviously, they will listen to women and be respectful.â&#x20AC;?

When asked what she brings to the table, as opposed to her male counterparts, she answers quickly, â&#x20AC;&#x153;In reality, women are very detail-oriented. If a problem comes up, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m going to catch it right away. I think women are more willing to converse about things, too. I see that as a big plus. Some of the guys Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve worked with in NARI have told me they learned from watching meâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;they want to learn how to talk more with their clients, to find out more about what they want.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;Construction is probably one of the few industries in the world thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s kind of off limits to women,â&#x20AC;? she comments. â&#x20AC;&#x153;There arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t that many women who know much about construction. Some of the strongest women I know, who are running big companies out thereâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;when it comes to construction, they back off. One female client of mine told me, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re the only contractor I interviewed who looked me in the eye. The other contractors would look at my husband.â&#x20AC;&#x2122; So thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a comfort zone for women when they work with me.â&#x20AC;? Mozen emphasizes that point: â&#x20AC;&#x153;Women are needed very badly in this industry. I tell women to take classes, get certified. Atlanta Habitat for Humanity As a construction manager for Atlanta Habitat for Humanity, Irene Kagika says she occasionally gets quizzical looks from people she meets. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Many times, when I come to work on a new project, male colleagues or contractors will say, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;You are the manager?â&#x20AC;&#x2122; Then when we discuss what needs to be done, they quickly find out that I know what Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m talking about,â&#x20AC;? she chuckles. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Also, it helps when I drive up in a truck with the Atlanta Habitat logo on it!â&#x20AC;? For over a decade, she worked as a House Leader, responsible for the entire â&#x20AC;&#x153;buildâ&#x20AC;? of a Habitat house, including the crew. Now, sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been promoted to a Repair with Kindness manager, in charge of rehabilitating homes in need of critical repairs throughout entire neighborhoods where the organization builds.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;Typically, when I say Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m in construction, people think itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a matter of having strength. But no, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s about knowledge. Do you know the procedure of putting a house together or repairing it? Do you know what to look for? I do it allâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;from floors, to putting up cabinets, to shingling roofs,â&#x20AC;? she says. A major component of Habitatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s program is the use of volunteers for manual labor. â&#x20AC;&#x153;A lot of female volunteers say, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;You know, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve never done this before.â&#x20AC;&#x2122; And I say, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;I will teach you, even if itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s just how to swing a hammer. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not as hard as it looks.â&#x20AC;&#x2122; They realize itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s doable. My job is to make sure theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re safe, they know what to do, why, and how to do it right.â&#x20AC;?

Patricia Brown says when asked about her work as a general contractor and owner of a home-building business. She and her husband opened Keiffer Phillipsâ&#x20AC;&#x201C;Patricia Brown Builders, Inc., almost two Brown says of this kitchen design in a Garden Hills home remodel, â&#x20AC;&#x153;The flush cabinet-door and drawer style is simple, but using different wood-stain colors for the upper and lower cabinets adds decades ago, so she has plenty visual interest. Looking for a Pet-Friendly Floor? Here are 6 types of wood floors that are better suited for pets

Are you one of the 65 percent of families in America with a pet? And maybe you’ve been told hardwood floors aren’t the best choice for those of us with pets. There are some types of wood floors better suited for pets. They aren’t indestructible, but they are certainly more practical than others. Look for these dog-friendly flooring types: • Wire Brushed. These wood floors are distressed by a machine to remove the sapwood (soft wood) and enhance the wood grain, adding texture and character. Its weathered, elegant, antique look hides scratches particularly well due to its matte finish. • Character Grade. This flooring keeps the wood’s natural appearance and displays its full characteristics. Color variations and knots occurring naturally show clearly. This visually less “perfect” wood hides damage well. • Distressed Hardwood Flooring. This wood is intentionally scratched and scraped to create an antique look. Planks’ edges can be darkened, wire brushed and sculpted, resulting in lots of texture and character. You won’t know if a dent in your floor was

one that you paid for or one your dog made! Scratches can be easily hidden using a touch-up pen. • Low-Gloss, Satin or Matte Finishes. These sheen levels help hide normal wear and tear and show footprints less. The glossier and darker you go, the more light reflects off the floor—showing more dirt, dust and imperfections—not what you want with pets. • Sliced Cut Engineered. A cutting method for the veneer on engineered hardwoods that minimizes the soft grain. Also look for a top veneer at least 3mm thick, so you can sand and refinish it once or twice. • Oil-Rubbed Finish. This very low-gloss finish uses oil instead of polyurethane or wax and tends to make wood look vintage. Oil penetrates and becomes part of the wood, so it isn’t nearly as sensitive to scratches or wear as a urethane finish. It’s easy to maintain (DIY) and, if done properly, will prevent a floor from ever needing sanding. Expect these floors to be on the upper end of the price scale.

Their goal in nice weather is to spend a ton of time outside,” says Vincent Longo, president of Vincent Longo Custom Builders. “Our designer, Casey Bowie, wanted to replicate the look of their light, bright indoor kitchen and pull it outside, where they can grill and entertain.” Bowie designed this outdoor space for them, complete with a Bull Brahma grill and custom hood (vent by Vent-A-Hood®) and a KitchenAid® dishwasher, fridge and icemaker. To keep the look consistent with their indoor kitchen, Bowie used wood siding to create a shiplap eﬀect on the walls, but she used painted cedar rather than pine, which is commonly used indoors but doesn’t hold up well to the elements.

Outdoor grills require a bigger vent hood than a normal stove—make sure you designate space for one.

Everyday Getaway Location: Johns Creek Covered outdoor kitchen: 480 square feet Design and installation: All Square Contracting | AllSquareContracting.com Micah Purvis, owner of All Square Contracting, and the designer of this cozy outdoor kitchen, was asked to construct an outdoor room that would blend seamlessly with the existing brick façade of the house. Because the kitchen would be used for entertaining at night as much as during the day, he knew he’d need to focus on lighting. But there was a problem: “It was tough incorporating lighting when there weren’t any ceiling cavities to hide the wiring. So we used small, ﬂush-mount ﬁxtures embedded in the wood beams―there’s no need for a conduit for the wires. It provides great task lighting and a very nice ambience.” Purvis selected a TEC infrared gas grill and also a bright-orange Kamado Joe grill, not only for variety, but to add a punch of color to the kitchen.

The deck required complicated construction methods, so it’s built to last―it’s bulletproof!” Kozdeba chose Ipe wood (pronounced “ee-pay”), which is almost twice as dense as normal wood, for the deck itself and the cabinetry in the kitchen. “It’s perfect for outdoor applications, but it’s not nicknamed ‘Stone Wood’ for nothing,” he laughs. “We went through an unusually high number of drill bits and saw blades on this project!” Perlick appliances and Viking and Primo Kamado grills were used in the kitchen island. And a misting system was hung above the countertops to help combat the hot Georgia sun.

Micah Rogers, the landscape architect and designer, explains, “The challenge was taking inspirations the clients found when traveling the globe and then tying them into the design.” He infused the space with the warm hues of Japanese saunas, a bar and lighting reminiscent of Brazilian beach huts, and the clean lines of Europe’s modern ski chalets―resulting in a cohesive ﬁnished product. To evoke a luxe look, Rogers used countertops in “Cheyenne Leathered” granite and chose Perlick appliances, an Evo grill, and Infratech built-in heaters. Cedar slat walls enclose the living and kitchen/bar areas and provide a sense of an “outdoor room,” while still maintaining an inviting, open atmosphere.

At Home With Chef Kevin Rathbun Appreciating Freedom, Family and Food By Stacy Moser fter spending countless hours in each of his four Atlanta restaurants (Rathbun’s, Krog Bar, Kevin Rathbun Steak, and KR SteakBar), chef Kevin Rathbun takes time to slow down and cherish special moments at home with friends and family. “My wife, Melissa, and I work together in our restaurants and they take a considerable amount of energy. I don’t want my headstone to say, ‘He Had the Most Restaurants,’” Rathbun chuckles wryly. “Life passes you by if you’re not paying attention. I want to enjoy what I have.” So during their time off and away from their commercial kitchens, the couple chooses to keep things simple and focus on a relaxed version of cooking at home. “No doubt about it, our kitchen is the heart of our home,” he says. “The room is a cool blend of modern design, which I love, and a New Orleans vibe, which is her thing. My wife’s a great cook—she’s Sicilian, so she loves Italian and Creole food. I used to cook for her all the time, so now she cooks for me,” Rathbun explains. “When I cook, I make a mess. She tells me, ‘We don’t have all those dishwashers like you do at work!’ Since she’s so neat, she does most of the cooking. But when we have friends over, sometimes I’ll fancy it up and grill or fry something on my barbecue.” He says that, unlike his adventurous cooking style, his wife is the traditionalist in the family— preferring simplicity, “like spaghetti and meatballs, really simple, but really delicious.” The James Beard-nominated chef savors playing host to fellow food lovers. “We have pretty good-sized gatherings at our house. I built the kitchen to do large-format stuff. We have up to 40 people sometimes, like when I did a party for the charity, Open Hand Atlanta, recently. We always have jazz musicians over. My mom was a maître d’ at a highend restaurant and she would bring over all her server friends for dinner. Dad would have a jazz session all day with dozens of people and cook

But, he says, “Sundays are so sacred. We’ll cook an egg and grits for breakfast and it’s simple. To me, that’s what it’s all about.”

Chef Kevin Rathbun shares his version of home cooking with this simple, yet sumptuous, chicken recipe. “This is a dish I like to cook just for my wife, Melissa,” he says. “Roasted chicken is something everyone can do, but this recipe kicks up the flavors.”

Ingredients for Chicken

1 whole chicken (3.5 pounds) 1 tablespoon kosher salt 2 teaspoons table grind black pepper 1 yellow onion, roughly chopped 10 garlic cloves 2 whole lemons (with peels), roughly chopped ¼ cup tarragon, chopped 2 tablespoons olive oil

1 pound orzo pasta ¼ pound salted butter 2 cups leeks, small diced and rinsed 5 cups chicken broth 2 teaspoons kosher salt ½ teaspoon black pepper ½ cup parsley, chopped ¾ cup Parmesan, grated

• Wash whole chicken thoroughly, drain off all excess water. • In the cavity, add salt and pepper and roll around to coat cavity of chicken. • In a mixing bowl, add onion, garlic, lemons and tarragon. Mix well while squeezing juice from lemons. Stuff the cavity of the chicken with mixture. • Place chicken on a roasting rack on a half-sheet pan, rub with olive oil and season the outside with salt and pepper. • Preheat convection oven to 425 F. Place chicken in oven for 25 minutes. • Turn the temperature down to 350 F at this time and continue roasting for 35 minutes. • Remove from oven and let rest for 20 minutes before serving.

• In a thick bottom pot, add butter and sweat (gently heat) leeks until tender for approximately 5 to 7 minutes, trying not to brown. • Remove leeks from pot and reserve. Add 2 tablespoons of olive oil back to the pot and add half of the orzo. Toast orzo until golden brown for approximately 5 minutes. • After toasting, add remaining orzo, buttered leeks, salt and pepper. • Add chicken broth. Simmer the pasta. Stir to avoid sticking until most of the visual liquid has evaporated. • Cover with a lid. Turn off fire and let stand for 20 minutes. • When serving, fluff the orzo and add parsley and Parmesan cheese.
