In November, we hosted a photo shoot celebration at our studio for the winners. Talk about a fun time! I had an opportunity to greet attendees before they were ushered over to hair and makeup by The Green Room Agency and then photographed by Catrina Maxwell of CatMax Photography. It was great seeing people dressed to the nines while mixing and mingling with others—bubbly in one hand and business cards in the other. I loved chatting it up with Mark Austin of Sewell Appliance and I couldn’t stop laughing whenever Jose Arevalo of Jose’s Painting & Remodeling captured my attention. These stellar people and their standout businesses are definitely worth getting to know.

To create the base for the earthenware lamp, he strategically stripped away layers of paint to produce the beautiful patina seen. To offset the bold red, he selected a beige silk shade and complementary bronze fittings. The talented craftsman then consulted with antique refurbisher Bill Long of Antiques and Beyond to wire the lamp. And with one turn of a switch, this lamp now brightens up its homeowner's life!

Bedroom playtime gets bigger and better When space is at a premium and your kids need all they can get—look up! The designer of this children’s bedroom made the most of a vaulted ceiling by installing a loft, which almost doubles the amount of play space available in the room. This bedroom made its debut as an HGTV “Green Home” in Serenbe and was designed by Linda Woodrum, a seasoned veteran who has worked her magic for HGTV’s giveaway-home contests for several decades.

We love this use of a small space! Nothing appeals to kids like a climb up a ladder to a cozy, tree-house-like retreat. Woodrum started with a tan hue on the walls to provide a neutral backdrop for the vibrant punches of color elsewhere in the room. The playful, jungle-print fabrics—on the throw pillows and upholstered bed frames and headboards—are as appealing to adults as they are to kids. Concentrated pops of bright green are a nod to the outdoors, as is the rustic wood used for the ladder, railings, base for the nightstand and pegs on the wall. To ramp up the creativity, Woodrum added a pulley system for a “treat bucket” that allows kids to send messages and toys to the loft from below. To finish the inviting space, she hung unframed prints that add some light-hearted appeal to the room.

the right fix If It's Broke, You Can Fix It! …Well, Maybe.
The problem:
The problem:
We are installing a hardwood floor in our bedroom. We want to glue the planks down, but I’m nervous about how to do it.
I’m trying to organize my garage, but I have so many tools with long handles—how do I keep them from falling all over each other?
The fix: You may want to consider hiring a professional. This project isn’t for the everyday DIYer. However, these two tips can make it easier. First, make sure your floor is scrupulously clean when it’s time to glue. Little bits of dirt can get stuck between the floor and the wood plank, which will keep the plank from lying flat. Second, skip buying buckets of wood adhesive, which is applied with a handheld trowel (usually a messy process). Use a caulk gun instead. Wood adhesive comes in tubes, just like caulk, which can be squeezed onto the bottom of planks in an “S-curve” pattern and then applied to the floor. No muss, no fuss.
I can laugh about it now…
The fix: A quick solution for your problem involves using PVC drainage pipes that are about 3 feet long (with a 6-inch diameter). Using a power drill, attach the pipes vertically to your garage wall by drilling in a screw at an angle about an inch from the top and bottom of the pipe. Space the pipes one foot apart and a few feet from the floor. Now you have “sleeves” where you can drop in your rakes, shovels and brooms to keep them upright and out of your way. One sleeve will accommodate one or two long-handled items—attach more pipes to the wall to store more items.
We splurged on a new hot tub in our yard as a way to ward off the winter blues. But we installed it without thinking about our trip back and forth from the bathroom to the hot tub! It’s so far from our back door, our relaxing visit to the tub becomes a shivery run when we’re ready to go inside. Next time—we’ll think about location, location, location!
The problem: Winter winds are whistling through the cracks around my bedroom window frame. Other than buying new windows, what can I do?
The fix: Try using a little-known product that’s been around for decades—rope caulk (Mortite® Caulking Cord is an example). This putty-like, nonhardening caulk often comes in rolls that are perforated, like lanes down a highway. Wherever you find a gap between your wall and your window frame, unroll a piece of the rope, tear it off to the right length and width, and push it between the window and the frame. It doesn’t stain and never hardens, so it’s easy to remove when you need to, just pull on one end and off it comes!

PLANTS ADD VALUE Even though this backyard isn’t located in Atlanta, we were inspired by the creative solution that worked within the homeowners' budget constraints. The use of flora to enhance the surroundings of this ecofriendly retreat only added to its uniqueness. Let the allure of the environment encompassing your pool or spa influence the overall design. Foliage surrounding a pool or spa can serve several purposes: • Privacy: check the location of your future spa. Consider taller plants to create “walls” to block others’ views. • Beauty: invite Mother Nature in and enhance the look of your spa. But select plants that don’t flower, lose their leaves in winter or attract bugs or birds. • Safety: the stroll from the house to your spa can be slippery—use ground cover to provide traction on your walk.

Rustic Spa Tucked Into the Landscape Margie Grace, the designer of this beautiful backyard, says her favorite part of this landscape is, “the way the stone steps embrace the tub. It’s as though the spa grew out of the earth.” Due to budget constraints, the homeowners weren’t able to install a full swimming pool in the yard. Grace’s solution? She used wooden staves, like those found in wine barrels, to create a cedar “spool,” a spa large enough to be used like a pool, but easier on the budget. Stay Extra Cool by the Pool with Mother Nature’s Perfect Decking – Grass! Nothing beats a cool dip in the pool on a warm day – until you step out onto the blazing hot deck. Many traditional hardscape or decking materials can get hot enough to cause first degree burns in just a few seconds. The simple (and more affordable) solution? Sod! The green hue of healthy sod contrasts beautifully with the blues and whites of today’s modern pool materials. The palette combination really pops. A backyard oasis surrounded by vibrant green evokes a tropical vibe. You’ll feel instantly relaxed and blissfully separated from the chaos of life “out there”. If you are worried about clogging up your filter system with clippings or dirt, you can use pavers or stepping stones. Create defined pathways on the most traveled paths – like between the pool and the patio or the pool and the back door of your home. Take care when mowing or adding chemicals to your lawn. Your landscaping company may need to be told to mow, edge, spray, and blow with their equipment pointed away from the pool. (Give them a few lessons on how to use the skimmer, too!) If you enjoy boisterous pool fun (read… lots of splashing), you can use hardscapes
around the portion of the pool that gets the most action and install sod around the rest to achieve a similar look and feel. Parents do like the softer surface that sod provides compared to hardscape decking. Kids bubble over with joy near the pool and that often means lots of running, skipping, and jumping. Sod is much kinder to tender toes, knees, and elbows! Over time, your grassy pool deck may develop yellow spots from chlorine or salt damage. Patching is easy with certified sod from NG Turf. Be sure to make note of the variety you choose, and you’ll get a perfect match every time you repair. (If you have an ozone or ultraviolet pool system, you won’t need to worry about yellowing at all!) Zoysia and Bermuda turfgrass varieties do best around a pool. They are both drought resistant and can tolerate the heavy foot traffic around a busy pool. One final note – be sure to check your local codes.
