ON THE COVER: A great accomplishment of contemporary design is to blur the line between exterior and interior spaces, creating areas such as outdoor kitchens and bathrooms with glass walls. Grab Some Shade Synergy Shade Solutions recently expanded its territory, relocating its headquarters to Atlanta in August of this year. Originally established in Miami by childhood friends Ozzy LLanes and Alex Valdivia, Synergy Shade Solutions is an all-inclusive window treatment company with products that range from plantation shutters to outdoor shades and everything in between for both commercial and residential customers. The company also specializes in motorized, wireless blinds and shades. What makes Synergy Shade Solutions unique, Photos by Synergy Shade Solutions however, is that the company is completely mobile. Expanded Options for Affordable Granite Construction Resources Inc. now offers The Artisan Group’s newest line of Modesto granite. “This new collection allows us to offer even more options for our customers,” says Mitch Hires, president of Construction Resources Inc. “Although the new line of granite is modestly priced, it offers the same quality we have become accustomed to with the Artisan Stone Collection.” Modesto granite is currently the organization’s most affordable line to date, priced at $35 per square foot, including a lifetime warranty. Styles include Sorrento, Rustico and Mendola. For more information, visit www.constructionresourcesusa.com.

Expert Q&A

Q:

When replacing my roof in the winter, will cold weather create an uneven appearance or cause shingle distortion?

A:

I’m often asked this question during the winter. Shingles will look uneven after a winter installation as a result of the cold weather. This happens because asphalt shingles lose pliability when they are installed at temperatures below 40 degrees Fahrenheit; they will continue to have a distorted appearance until they are heated above 40 degrees. This is not uncommon, and heat will usually solve the issue later down the road when the sun softens the asphalt and activates the tar line, or in GAF/ ELK’s case, the Dura Grip shingle sealant. Shingle distortion will usually flatten out in time. —Joseph Vann Hamby, founder, Joseph Vann Hamby Enterprises LLC

Membership fees have been reduced from $35 and include benefits such an unlimited free admission to MODA, two museum guest passes and free/discounted admission to MODA special events. Dual and family memberships have also been reduced. For more information, visit www.museumofdesign.org/members.htm.

Schuon Kitchen and Bath Opens Intown Location Branching out from its Roswell location, Schuon Kitchen and Bath recently opened a second store on Auburn Avenue in Atlanta in the Studioplex complex. The company, which first opened in 1993, sells directly to customers, remodelers and builders, providing design plans and products for kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms, offices and more. “A lot of our work is done in this area, so we opened our second store to better serve our existing customers and to offer our products to future customers,” says Emily Robbins, vice president of Schuon. Q:

I am renovating my kitchen and want to make it more eco-friendly. What are some ways to do this?

A:

When designing a kitchen, it is important to keep safety, health and energy efficiency in mind. All of these factors go into making the kitchen “green.” Follow these tips: • If you’re installing new cabinets and countertops, sourcing materials that do not contain harmful chemicals will help avoid the new construction smell, which can often trigger allergies. • Make sure that your HVAC contractor properly sizes the exhaust for the stove and has enough “make up” air coming in through the HVAC system so you do not pull air from places such as your fireplace. • Select lighting and appliances that are Energy Star rated to help reduce the cost of operating the kitchen. • Finally, design a kitchen that is timeless in its design so it will last for several decades rather than going to a landfill in just a few years.

Atlanta’s Ugliest Kitchen Gets a Makeover Earlier this year, Atlanta Home Improvement magazine partnered with Masterworks, Cabinet Café and CBS Atlanta to award a $15,000 budget to the owners of “Atlanta’s Ugliest Kitchen.” The winners were Alison Lanier and Peter Homing of Marietta. “After seeing the kitchen in person, we recognized that we had chosen the right family,” says Andrea Rizk of Masterworks. “The kitchen had no cabinets or countertops, and exposed gas and plumbing lines all over the place.” Lanier and Horning worked with MasterWorks and Cabinet Café to develop the best possible use of resources in the existing space. The homeowners opted to spend the majority of their budget on high-end cabinets, plumbing fixtures, and beautiful granite countertops. The mission-style, cabernetcolored cabinets are from Cabinet Café, which also supplied the granite from its collection. The sink and faucet are the Santa Cecelia design from Drip!, Cabinet Cafe’s exclusive plumbing line. MasterWorks installed a stainless steel sink with quiet wrap applied to the exterior of the sink for sound deadening. The homeowners decided to renovate the floors, paint and electrical work by themselves. The project’s end result is a beautiful new kitchen that any homeowner would be proud to own.

Campbell Hausfeld—a company specializing in power tools, air compressors, pressure washers and welders—recently developed a new line of four different Home Project Kits to help owners with their home decor and maintenance needs. Each kit contains a storage bag to keep the tools organized in one location. This new line includes the Home Décor Kit, complete with airbrushes Photos courtesy of Campbell Hausfeld for projects such as wall painting and art. The Home Improvement Kit has two separate models, both of which house a 2gallon air compressor and fastening kit, ideal for projects that require stapling or brad nailing. Finally, the Home Maintenance Kit is used to tackle projects ranging from interior sealing to landscape maintenance. Look for this product soon in local hardware stores. Visit www.chpower. com for more information. Editorial Resources begin on page 78.

Glass Perhaps the most popular choice right now, glass tile is a very versatile option. “We are seeing a lot of glass,” says Tom Dwyer, CR, of Harbour Towne Construction Inc. “Some are using it just for accents, but we’ve seen it for an entire backsplash and a wall of glass mosaic tile.” Glass also offers great opportunities for interesting textures. “The newest in tiles would be the dimensional ones in glass,” says Judy Mozen, president of Handcrafted Homes Inc. “They are not a flat surface on the wall; they swerve in and out with curves and textures.”

Natural Stone Using natural stone tiles, such as travertine, is still big in Atlanta right now. Some homeowners are mixing natural stone with other materials to create one-of-a-kind looks. “The last two bathrooms that we did had natural stone and marble designed together to create a traditional, but unique, look,” says Matt Hoots, CEO of The Hoots Group Inc. Sticking to the basics with natural stone can also be beneficial. “Many people are preparing for a market turn, so with smaller-scale projects, they are sticking to the neutral color palettes and classic or traditional materials,” says Jennifer Hicks, CKD, of Cruickshank Remodeling.

Porcelain Porcelain tile, a common choice throughout the years, now opens up some interesting options. “One of the newest trends is using digital ink-jet technology to make porcelain tiles that look like natural stones, such as travertine, slate and marble,” says Alan Dewberry of Tile Factory Outlet Inc. “A porcelain tile made with digital technology can give the appearance of a natural stone tile without the care and maintenance that natural stone tiles require.”

Metal If you’re looking for a stylish, unique accent for your kitchen, metal tiles are a prime pick. “Metal tiles are becoming much more popular, especially in kitchen areas,” Dewberry says. “Stainless steel and copper mosaics seem to be the most popular metals used for kitchen backsplashes.” Metal is almost always used for accents, as opposed to entire rooms.

Choosing Colors Neutrals are still the most popular color choices for tile, with many people choosing tiles with beige or brown tones. However, right now, tiles with gray and white undertones are becoming more and more common. If you’re looking for a little more color, cool blues and greens can add some extra personality to a bathroom. “Some clients bring the Caribbean watercolor feel into their Atlanta homes to create a more casual, airy, vacation feel,” says John Beach of Paces Construction Co. Choose any color that suits your style, but remember that neutrals are probably best if you plan to sell your home in the near future.

Sizes and Patterns Different sizes and patterns are ideal ways to get creative. Small glass tiles are great for creating a mosaic effect in a shower or backsplash, while larger (up to 20-by-20 inch) tiles can bring an elegant feel to your floors. “Always remember that larger areas look better when tiled with large tiles,” says Peter Stasiowski of P&J Tile.

Making Your Choice With so many options available, choosing tile can be difficult. “Atlanta was historically considered a very traditional market for decorating and design tastes, but with such a huge influx of people from all over the country to the metro area, interests have broadened to include contemporary, modern European and generally more eclectic tastes,” says Gregory Gomard of Tile House Inc. To ensure that you get what you’re looking for, visit a variety of showrooms and take home as many full-size samples as you can to see how they look in your space. Remember, choose something you love, and you’ll enjoy your newly tiled space for years to come. Editorial Resources begin on page 78. www.atlantahomeimprovement.com

ccording to the contractors of this Atlanta-area kitchen renovation, the mission

of the project was to “turn lemons into lemonade.” This original 1890s farmhouse had partially burned, a travesty to the owners who had considered the home their pride and joy. “We had a budget that had been dictated by the insurance company,” says Frank Wickstead, owner of WicksteadWorks, “and we were determined to turn a bad situation into a dream home.” The owner always wanted a red

kitchen, and that’s exactly what she got. Using affordable appliances and fixtures, the renovation team was able to create a bold, contemporary space and still stay within their budget. The room’s teacup pendant lights add a contemporary feel to the space, while the countertop is more reminiscent of the home’s bygone years. The owners were not crazy about traditional granite, so leathered granite was installed, which adds a matte finish and interesting texture. The kitchen now boasts a nice mix of contemporary and traditional styles and offers a comfortable space for the

fter 8 years of what she calls “contemplation and procrastination,” the owner

of this Marietta home decided to take the plunge and remodel her outdated kitchen. “My drab, white kitchen was semi-functional and did not allow for reconfiguration,” she says, “so I worked with what I had.” Her primary goals were to eliminate the rarely used desk and cabinet area and create a built-in space for buffet serving and entertaining with extra cabinet space, all while creating height and increased functionality in the room.

Remodeling, the owner’s drab kitchen became her dream kitchen. The down-draft stove, which occupied a generous amount of space, was removed and replaced with a new cooktop that features an up-draft hood and offers additional drawers for storage. The room’s crown molding and under-cabinet lighting was also replaced and now offers a more modern, polished look. The owner’s new, handcrafted hutch/ buffet cabinet is her favorite feature in the updated space and includes a solid maple face frame with maple veneer plywood sides and backs. The drawers feature full extension runners for easy access, and the cabinet includes a built-in, custom-fit

his bathroom remodel was inspired by two iridescent vanity basins that the

homeowners found. They consulted the team at Portis Building & Interiors, requesting they design the new bathroom around the basins, and the talented staff happily rose to the challenge. On a strict budget, the

Bathroom

pros at Portis were able to transform this master bathroom into a spa-like wonder. The husband wanted a walk-in shower, but the wife was not willing to give up her luxurious jetted tub. The solution? Get both! A walk-in shower with glass walls was installed, which led the way to the jetted soaking tub and a brand new closet. Double vanities were added to accommodate the new sinks, as were iridescent tile accents to complement the overall look. Mosaic tiles that offer a mirror effect run up the wall behind each vanity basin, creating a striking appearance that is truly spectacular. Custom-made, espresso-colored cabinets round out the luxurious look, offering a rich and elegant

he goal of this Roswell master bathroom renovation was to create a spa-like environment

reminiscent of the tranquility in Atlanta’s Serenbe community. The owners wanted a luxurious, peaceful bathroom that focused on using sustainable products. In addition to specifically asked for a significantly larger shower and toilet space, a surround sound stereo system, heated tile floors (the bathroom is over the garage and gets very cold), considerably more storage space, a low tub with a ledge that provided ease for entering and exiting, and redesigned closets. To accomplish the owners’ dream bathroom, contractors took advantage of unused cavities in the walls. Now, the shower is three times the size of the original one, as is the water closet. Added luxuries, such as the towel warmer, built-in cabinet linen hamper, task lighting, a shoe closet and custom-made art, have made the bathroom a one-of-a-kind retreat for the owners. To create a custom bathing space, a combination of glass and stone was used in the shower and tub in shades of blue, gray and cream. Because the tub is situated directly beneath a window, sunlight reflects on these tiles, creating a glistening and inviting

space. Now, the owners have their own spa-like retreat that they can visit

hen approached to transform this early ‘90s kitchen in the East Cobb

area, Lisa Brooks and Rob Sweeney of Sweeney & Son Contracting devised a plan to update the burning builder oak kitchen into a state-of-the-art, custom space. Their goal was to add a warm and inviting feel to the area, which was achieved by fusing soft, creampainted cabinetry with a contrasting custom moss maple-stained island. Brand new, state-of-the-art appliances were installed, including a dishwasher, refrigerator, microwave drawer,

range and ventilation hood liner, giving the kitchen a contemporary look that seamlessly blended with the new design. One of the most unique installations, however, is the serving bar that is tucked beneath the staircase and houses a beverage cooler and storage bar cabinetry. To “add” space to the area, Sweeney and Brooks created the illusion of a higher ceiling by building glass, lighted cabinets on top of the cream cabinets. To add warmth, they selected textured accents, such as natural, stacked stone that was placed around the fireplace and hand-cut pillowed tile for the backsplash. From boring, builder-grade quality to European-style custom elegance, this new kitchen is not only warm and

lthough the master bathroom in this Marietta home had a solid framework, it had become dated

over the years, and the homeowners wanted Distinctive Remodeling to help them create a fresh look for this important space in their home. The owners were comfortable with the minor adjustments they were able to focus their budget on choosing just the right materials. There were three key objectives for the project design: a larger shower, maintaining space for a new tub and sticking within a moderate budget. To accommodate these goals, the wall between the shower and tub was removed (making the shower feel much larger), and the new tub was repositioned to allow for a larger, frameless shower enclosure. The tile— in warm, neutral shades—was expertly designed to define both the tub and shower, then blend into the flooring, creating a seamlessly integrated bathing area. The vanity, in cherry with a deep mink stain, balances the softer neutrals of the tile. Cabinet knobs and pulls, as well as towel holders in bronze, add a subtle sheen. Accents of color come from the vanity sconces and chandelier, and thoughtfully selected plumbing fixtures lend added sophistication. The result is

an expertly executed facelift that invites the owners to linger and relax.

Top 10 Kitchen & Bath Design Trends After determining the winners of the 2010 NKBA Design Competition, the National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA) identified the following as the 10 most popular design trends of the year. 1. Concealed kitchens. Taking integration to new heights, kitchens are being quietly incorporated into the home’s primary living and entertainment rooms. The looks that define this trend are clean structural lines, concealed appliances and sleek color palettes. 2. Beverage stations. So that the cook can work without being interrupted by those looking for a drink, kitchens are incorporating beverage stations. These spaces generally include an undercounter refrigerator, wine refrigeration and a coffeemaker. Cabinets in this area house stemware, coffee cups, silverware, coffee, sugar and tea. Many have a smaller bar area included, as well. 3. Scaling of elements. Shapes, textures and the placement of fixtures are being used to create scale in the overall composition of kitchens and baths. ✧ ✧ ✧✧ Sensational Sinks ✧

Showcased at this year’s Kitchen & Bath Industry Show (KBIS), the following newly released sinks offer a mixture of added function, unique designs and fun features.

BLANCO’S RONIS sink is being called “the ultimate culinary entertainment center.” A generously sized, one-piece round sink, RONIS features a flushmount look and an accessories tray that floats and rotates inside the rim of the sink—including a glass cutting board and stainless-steel bowls. www.blancoamerica.com

Kohler’s Empress Bouquet, Katagami and Kallos sinks are bringing high design and detail to bathroom basins. As the latest additions to Kohler’s Nature’s Chemistry and Artist Editions collections, each of these sink styles offers its own distinct look: the Empress Bouquet pattern features a modern interpretation of 18th century Chinese print work; the Kallos spun-glass sink is Kohler’s first in an undercounter style, offering an architectural pattern that’s reminiscent of fine crystal; and the Katagami wading-pool lavatory, cast in bronze with a dark patina, highlights the movement of water in its generous 20-by-16.5-inch size with an elevated drain cover featuring a subtle floral motif. www.kohler.com

Native Trails’ Cantina Pro brings functional design to the bar- and prep-sink category. The sink’s fixed prep deck features ridges on its gently sloping surface to help with draining, and the additional surface space also highlights the textural details of Native Trails’ signature hand-hammered recycledcopper design. A grid fits neatly on the floor of the sink, providing protection for the bottom surface and a cushion for fragile dishes and glassware. www.nativetrails.net

Manufactured Quartz

Medium ($60-$110)

Requires little maintenance. No sealant needed.

Durable, resistant to wear and tear, scratches, stains. Heat-impervious. Some patterns look like natural stone. Available in a wide array of colors. Slab-size limitations may mean waste and seams.

Wood

Medium to high ($50-$250)

Surface can be sanded and resealed to repair scratches. Regular application of mineral oil keeps wood conditioned and stain resistant. For non-cutting areas a stain and/or top coat can be applied for a sealed wood finish.

Warm and cozy appeal. Wide array of wood species. Variety of construction including plank and end grain. Stain/top coat can easily scratch and break down.

Granite

High ($32-$200)

Repairable by professionals only. Use a cutting board. Resealing needed once a year. Dark surfaces need frequent wipe-downs to avoid fingerprints.

Very stylish. Provides a smooth, cool surface for handling things like dough. Absorbs some oils and stains. Heat-resistant. Sold by the slab. Popular colors more cost effective for waste concerns.

Limestone

High ($50-$80)

Requires annual sealing.

Porous and soft. Best used in bath or low-traffic kitchen areas.

Marble

High ($50-$85)

Scratches somewhat easily. Repairable by professionals only.

Soapstone

High ($50-$65)

Requires annual sealing.

Best used in bath or low-traffic kitchen areas.

High ($75-$150)

Easy to clean. Durable, but scratches easily. Scratches are not repairable. Requires frequent wipe-downs due to fingerprints. Brushed finish can minimize appearance of wear and tear.

Sleek, professional look. Cool surface. Does not chip or crack. Does not absorb stains, oils or odors. Can dent. Heat-impervious.

Copper

High ($90-$120)

Can be sealed to prevent tarnishing. Clean with copper cleaner for shiny finish. Can be cleaned with soap and water if patina is desired.

Warm, artistic look. Antibacterial surface. Extremely durable.

Tile (ceramic, porcelain)

Low to medium ($10-$90)

Grout lines must be cleaned; grout can discolor. Tile can chip. Repairable.

Very stylish. Will not scratch. Does not absorb oils or odors. Heat-impervious. Mixing and matching provides opportunities for creativity.

High ($60-$65)

Requires sealer to protect surface. Reseal every 1-2 years. Clean with nonabrasive cleaner.

Porous and soft. Can scratch, burn and stain. Wide array of color mixtures available. Made to order, eliminating slab size limitations.

Solid Surface

Low to medium ($35-$65)

Easy to repair surface scratches, stains and burns. Deeper damage can be professionally repaired. Little maintenance required.

Does not mar easily. Easy to repair and restore. Does not absorb oils or odors. Resistant to heat damage. Great flexibility; pliable material can be molded to almost any specification.

Laminate

Low ($15-$50)

Cleans easily with basic household kitchen cleaner. Can scratch, stain, crack and chip. Not repairable.

Least expensive to install and replace. Vast color and pattern selection. Does not absorb oils or odors. Not heat-impervious. Limitations on edges and seams.

Cast Polymer (cultured marble, other cultured)

Measuring Guide Providing a professional with rough measurements and sketches of your kitchen or bath will help them develop with specific ideas and determine the project’s scope and estimated cost. Here is a guide to properly measuring your kitchen or bath to help you begin planning your dream project. Before you begin, be sure to note your trim thickness, the location of any pocket doors and floor vents and whether the top of your cabinets will be visible in any place of the room.

Walls

Appliances (kitchen)

• Measure the overall length of each wall at countertop level.

• Locate the centerline for your sink, cooktop and oven by measuring from the nearest sidewall to the center of the cabinetry.

• Measure each section of wall separately, measuring from corner to window, window to door, etc. Make sure these measurements add up to the total wall measurement. • Measure from outside trim to outside trim.

• Indicate the type of cooktop. • Note locations of any future appliances. • Note the placement of the icemaker.

Ceilings • Measure the ceiling height from the finished floor to the existing ceiling at a couple of different areas. • Measure from finished floor to the bottom of existing soffits. • Are there any can lights that will interfere with the crown molding or the valence?

• Measure the height and width of all existing appliances.

Plumbing and HVAC • Record the centerlines of plumbing, measuring from the nearest sidewall to the center of the sink. • Record the general location of all heat and air supplies and any returns.

Windows

• Note the hood venting—is it in the wall, from the ceiling or from the floor?

• Measure window heights, widths and distances to the sidewall end, to the ceiling and to the floor.

• Note where all gas lines are, as well as exterior sprinkler heads.

• Measure from outside trim to outside trim. • Include distances between windows.

Doors • Measure any door heights, widths and distances to the sidewall end, to cabinetry and to the ceiling. • Measure from outside trim to outside trim.

Bathroom fixtures • Record the center location of the water closet and the vanity sink. • Measure the width, height and depth of the tub, shower and vanity. • Note where access to Jacuzzi controls will be (for maintenance and repair).

• Record the placement of hinges, which way the door swings (in or out) and which side the door opens. www.atlantahomeimprovement.com

✧ KITCHEN BATH ✧ 2011 PLANNER ✧ Project planning guide

Kitchen Layouts According to the NKBA’s guidelines, there are four basic kitchen layouts: galley, L-shape, U-shape and G-shape. How each layout functions is based on the concept of the work triangle, or the distance between the three main work areas: sink, cooktop and refrigerator. For maximum efficiency, the work triangle should follow these guidelines: • Each triangle leg should be 4-9 feet long, and the sum of the three should not exceed 26 feet. • Cabinetry should not intersect any triangle leg. • General traffic patterns should not interfere with the work triangle.

Editorial Resources Adams Kitchens Inc. www.adamskitchens.com Blanco www.blancoamerica.com Dave’s Cabinet Inc. www.cabinetsbydaves.com

Galley (two wall)

The galley consists of two facing walls and usually is found in condos and apartments. The work triangle is efficient, but the aisle between the two countertops is narrow. This option is a good plan for one cook.

L-shape

In this kitchen design, two perpendicular walls contain the three main elements— sink, cooktop and refrigerator—to create a natural triangle. The L-shape kitchen generally will have ample counter space and lends itself to the inclusion of an island.

U-shape

The U-shape kitchen uses three walls, or two walls with an attached peninsula. This layout is very efficient because it allows the cook to pivot among the stations, provides excellent storage and can accommodate two cooks. A center island often is included in the larger versions of this plan. 64

ATLANTA HOME IMPROVEMENT DECEMBER 2010

1210_042-065_KBPlanner.indd 64

G-shape

This option is basically a U-shaped kitchen with a fourth wall, which is usually opposite the sink and contains additional appliances, a pantry or a desk. Generally one of the largest layouts, the Gshape allows for more amenities than any other layout. Editorial Resources begin on page 78.

How to incorporate plants to give your home’s exterior natural beauty

allow for growth so the plant doesn’t

overtake your home.

When deciding how to landscape your property, don’t just think groundcover; look up and examine the vertical possibilities, as well. Incorporating plants into your home’s exterior can soften the look of architectural features, offer thermal-regulation properties (reducing the heat gain of your home), improve your home’s stormwater management and even increase your property value.

greenwalls Created and developed by McCaren Designs, the Greenwalls Vertical Planting System incorporates a powder-coated wire hanging structure filled with a foam planting material and a drip-irrigation channel—all backed by a waterproof layer. This system allows for a full wall of greenery. Planting is easy—just cut a slit into the foam panel and insert a plant. With the aesthetics of an artistic element and the benefits of reduction in your home’s heat gain, sound insulation, stormwater management and more, Greenwalls are a great option for

Ivy improvements

homeowners.

A well-known option for greening your home’s exterior is the addition of ivy growing up the walls. “This is a great way to bring the exterior walls to life, shelter the home from sunlight and help to reduce the indoor temperature,” says Lou Manfredini, Ace Hardware’s home expert.

Despite its benefits, Manfredini warns homeowners that ivy can also degrade exterior walls over time, so he stresses the importance of installing a metal expanded wall and having the ivy grow on that instead of directly on the house. Window of opportunity Flower boxes hung directly underneath windows are another popular way to add plants to exterior walls. Choose a box that is at least 8 inches deep and 8 inches wide and allows enough soil for plants to grow properly. Manfredini recommends using boxes made from a synthetic material, as wooden boxes can rot. “There are many different styles [of synthetic boxes] that look like wood and can be painted, as well,” he adds. Green roofs Green roofs, also known as “living roofs,” have become a growing trend when it comes to adding plants to building exteriors. Becoming more and more prominent on the roofs of tall buildings in urban areas, green roofs are also beneficial to homes. To build a green roof, a waterproof membrane must first be installed. Then, soil and plants are added. This type of roof absorbs rainwater, provides insulation for the home and reduces solar heat gain. Drainage and irrigation systems are often included in the design of the green roof, as well. And, last but not least, the roof provides extra space for gardening! 66

➤ Refrain from burning anything other than aged wood, including green wood (wood that isn’t seasoned), paper or any plastic products. This will help prevent a flammable, tar build-up called Creosote.

➤ If you do not use your fireplace regularly during the winter months, burn a small fire at least once to prevent critters from nesting in the chimney. Installing a chimney cap is another way to keep animals and Photo courtesy of Builder Specialties, www.builderspecialties.net

Winter is here, and what better way to spend those chilly nights than lounging around your home with a cozy fire burning? Be warned, however, that your chimney can easily become a safety hazard if it’s not properly maintained. Chimney fires, carbon monoxide poisoning and costly repairs are just a few of the many downfalls of an ill-maintained fireplace and chimney. Luckily, we’ve got some tips to keep your fireplace clean and maintained this season.

debris out.

➤ Regularly check the chimney’s exterior and any connection points for visible damage. Never attempt to clean a chimney that may be structurally unstable; a chimney sweep can advise on stability.

General guidelines Regardless of whether you use your fireplace on a regular basis, annual inspections are recommended to ensure that no major problems are present. If you use your fireplace regularly, you should clean it at least once a year. Clean it right before heavy use, preferably in early fall.

Although you can clean your fireplace on your own, experts recommend that homeowners call in the pros, as it can be a physically demanding job. However, if you eventually decide to handle the project on your own, consider hiring a chimney sweep at least once so you can watch the cleaning process and get an idea of what’s in store. Also take into consideration the tools you’ll need to accomplish the job, as equipment varies depending on whether you have a wood-burning or gas fireplace. For comprehensive do-it-yourself tips, visit www.diynetwork.com and search for “fireplace cleaning.”

chimney cleaning during the summer

If you take the less demanding route and hire a professional, select one who is certified by the Chimney Safety Institute of America (CSIA), 20 of which are within approximately 50 miles of downtown Atlanta. If you hire one who is not certified, be sure to ask the following questions: 1.

How long have you been in business?

2.

Can you provide customer references?

3.

Do you have unresolved complaints filed within the city or state consumer protection agency or Better Business Bureau?

4.

Do you have a valid business liability insurance policy that will protect my home and furnishings against accidents?

Recently, homeowners have been opting to update their homes rather than moving to new properties, and the most likely candidate for an update is the bathroom. No longer utilitarian spaces, bathrooms lend themselves to unexpected details from the rest of the home, in turn creating luxurious accents and interest in often designneglected spaces. Following are some of this year’s most popular bathroom design trends.

subcontractors on details such as grout color, measurements of fixtures and code requirements. Hiring the right designer can prevent mistakes and oversights.

keep in mind Your bathroom is for the use and enjoyment of your family, not the future homeowners. If you are planning on buying a new home in the near future, keep the floors and plumbing simple and add style through lighting, paint and accessories. These items can be easily and inexpensively changed.

Oriental Rugs Gone are the days of terry bathmats. Rugs add luxury and warmth by keeping feet off tile floors. Flat-weave rugs with low profiles, such as kilims and dhurries, hug the floor and are perfect for tile and stone. The exquisite patterns and colors of Oriental rugs are another excellent complement to simple baths. Do not be afraid to use an antique rug; a well-made rug will stand up to decades of use. important! Moisture and condensation are obstacles that you can overcome. Remember that good ventilation is critical in a bathroom, especially if you’re incorporating any of these trends. Use your best judgment in planning for your bath. Also, ensure

Wallpaper

that the light fixtures are rated for damp

Bathrooms are perfect for using bold-patterned paper, as limited time is spent in the bath, and these smaller spaces also require less material, which translates into a more cost-effective application. Wallpaper is making a big comeback and will quickly transform your plain bath into a happy and inviting space.

wallpaper worries

Nontraditional lighting

Still not convinced about wallpaper?

Fixtures labeled “bathroom” are fairly design-limited. Expand your search to include sconces and pendants traditionally used in the rest of the house. You can place more importance in the bath by using decorative lighting. It’s fine to mix finishes—a pair of dark bronze sconces will look great with a chrome faucet. Remember to check the wattage of new fixtures to ensure the bath will have enough light.

on the walls. Think geometric or tribal patterns for a current look. And be sure to use color! —Capella Kincheloe is an Atlanta residential designer. www.capellakincheloe.com.

Find a piece of furniture that you love and have your cabinetmaker reproduce it into a vanity. Don’t limit yourself to traditional vanities that are common in most bathrooms. Think beyond bathroom cabinets and use your dining room buffet for inspiration. This is also a great opportunity to experiment with hardware. 70

Grab Some Shade

Synergy Shade Solutions recently expanded its territory, relocating its headquarters to Atlanta in August of this year. When customers call, the staff head out to their homes, bringing all of their products, samples and advanced technology along. Visit synergyshadesolutions.com for more information.

Expanded Options for Affordable Granite

Construction Resources Inc. now offers The Artisan Group’s newest line of Modesto granite.

Overstock.com Launches Exclusive Site

Overstock.com Inc. recently launched a members-only, private-sale website, Eziba.com, providing customers with the latest home decor products from many leading brands. “Overstock.com has relationships with a large network of suppliers who are in search of different avenues to sell products,” says the company’s president Jonathan Johnson. “It was a natural progression for the O to build a private sale site.” Customers can register on the website free of charge. The site hosts daily sale events lasting between 48 and 72 hours each day beginning at 11 a.m. For more information, visit www.eziba.com. www.atlantahomeimprovement.com

Expert Q&A

When replacing my roof in the winter, will cold weather create an uneven appearance or cause shingle distortion?

Atlanta-area kitchen and bathroom makeovers Compiled by Kate Parrott

Kitchens and bathrooms are the most commonly remodeled—and widely used—rooms in the home, lending themselves to unique and functional floorplans, fixtures, amenities and decor. Whether you’re entertaining the idea of a modest makeover or you’re considering a full-fledged overhaul, these beforeand-after kitchen and bathroom projects are sure to offer some inspiration.

Giving your kitchen or bathroom a tile makeover can change the entire style and feel of the space. Whether you’re looking for something completely unique or you prefer to stick to a more neutral palette, there are many options available in style, materials and colors. Whatever your preferences, today’s tiles offer an array of creative options for dazzling designs.
