I am amazed at a designer’s ability to create an entire room around a single source of inspiration—a favorite object, a place. Almost anything will do.
Frameless Shower Enclosures
Something as simple as a Japanese maple in all its autumn glory can be just enough to inspire a palette of light gray (the bark of the tree) and crimson (the gorgeous leaves, of course). When accessorized with rustic furniture, homespun linens and lots of natural lighting, the room envelopes occupants with the feeling of a crisp fall morning, conjuring the image of that colorful maple. I’m not suggesting this approach be used haphazardly in the home, which can result in mismatched rooms and a disconnected look. Rather, the idea is to realize what an impact even the smallest detail can have on the overall feeling of a space. While we often think of the big picture for a new project—“I want the space to feel larger and more open”—designers work in the domain of details and artfully combine them for staggering results. With details in mind, we have honed in on some of the most style-defining elements of a kitchen remodel in this issue—cabinets and countertops. Why is radon exposure
Radon is a naturally occurring gas that comes from the breakdown of uranium. It is in soil, rocks and water and can be found just about anywhere, including your home. When you breathe air containing radon, you risk lung cancer. In fact, the Surgeon General has warned that radon is the second-leading cause of lung cancer in the U.S. today. It is inexpensive to have your home tested for radon ($25 to $150), and knowing your concentrated level number could save you and your family’s lives. Remodelers Council Participates in HomeAid Atlanta Service Project The Remodelers Council of the Greater Atlanta Home Builders Association recently teamed up with HomeAid Atlanta, a nonprofit organization that builds housing for the homeless, to help refurbish The Drake House, a crisis residential assessment center for homeless women with children in Roswell, as part of HomeAid Care Day. Volunteers assisted with an array of home improvement projects at The Drake House, including caulking, painting, repairing loose fixtures, replacing ceiling tiles and installing child safety latches on cabinet doors, among other things. “This is a great way for our members to use their unique talents to give back to the community and make a real difference in the lives of local families in need,” says Melina Wilkinson, of Oneida Builders, and chairperson of the Remodelers Council. Warm, wood tones; architectural details such as corbels, arches and framed cabinetry; and the use of distressed finishes and glazes are all common elements in traditional design. Traditional, however, can be punched up and still preserve its classic ambience. Mell Hill, vice president of residential sales and marketing at Oldcastle Surfaces Inc. (oldcastlesurfaces.com) recommends using beautiful additions such as: wingbacked chairs, 19th century antiques and even intricate tile and floor patterns. Such attention to detail gives a traditional kitchen extra dimension and historical appeal.

Contemporary: Make mine modern In recent years, more and more homeowners have opted to include streamlined, austere and minimalist spaces in their homes—and this aesthetic has found its way into the modern kitchen. Mansfield points to organizations such as Modern Atlanta (modern-atlanta.org), which are painting bold strokes with local design. “Contemporary design is a diamond-in-therough in Atlanta,” says Mansfield. Once thought to be cold in feel, contemporary design is actually quite varied and welcoming. “The design is often minimalistic and efficient,” says Rusty Parris, general manager of Stone Systems of Atlanta (866countertops.com), but contemporary kitchen designs offer looks that “range from a cohesive, monochromatic look to a more modern feel with bold pops of color.” Look for the use of metal, glass and laminate as well as warm wood tones and neutral colors, often with slabs of color that make a statement. Often open and uncluttered, contemporary kitchens make an impact and are gaining speed.

Pineapple House designer Mollie Chalk Monkaitis explains the thought process behind their master suite layout: “Let the function of the space be the most important element,” she says. “Create different areas within the room to serve a specific and separate purpose. These areas also delegate a specific traffic flow to experience the space as it was intended. Since there are three different ‘zones’ in this space, the traditional bed end bench was replaced by two knife-edge cushioned ottomans and can be easily moved to function as seating in the other two zones.” Dramatic window treatments outline each distinct area of the room, and coffee tables and end tables pull together the sitting room furniture. One of the luxuries of a master suite is having a space away from the bed for watching TV, reading, paying bills and other tasks. Milk & Honey Home defined this separate space with an area rug, sofa and lounge chair as well as accent furniture—coffee tables, end tables and a TV console—that provide added functionality. Conversational artwork and low-hanging light fixtures form an inviting vignette, while a similar color scheme ties the space together. On the other side of the room, a tall mirror increases the open feel, and another casually-placed chair and stool create the perfect spot to sit and pause for a moment. Additional storage across from the bed is framed by eyecatching art and accessories.

Whether it’s a hand-drawn customized monogram or the perfect mix of linens, your master should feel uniquely yours, not something seen over and over again like a matched set ordered from a catalog. But you can create that look by combining ready-made with some custom pillows and accessories like a pretty throw. Change it up with a pretty quilt with some color on it (Anthropologie, Urban Outfitters or HomeGoods), and then throw on some pillows in coordinating colors from HomeGoods or Etsy.com. Mark created an open and airy master suite with lines and shapes that echo the original 1930s architecture of the home. The decor is kept light to mimic the open space, accented with pops of color and statement pieces such as stunning chandeliers. According to Liz, “The fixtures demand attention but don’t dominate the room, as the warmth and simplicity of the lightly finished wood blends well with the neutral furnishings and natural sunlight. The eye is drawn to the spatially appropriate fixtures that really anchor the space.” Completing the suite are a generous walk-in closet and bathroom. Closets can often be an afterthought, but in a master suite they become rooms in their own right. In the Griffiths’ home, wall to-wall seagrass carpeting, dark paint and a unique lantern add definition to the walk-in closet, which serves as a dressing room. The master bath is a spa-inspired retreat with a spacious vanity, large shower and antique-style tub. Space is maximized with the vanity spanning the length of the quarterround windows and the tub tucked perfectly under the slope of the ceiling. s cooler weather nears, it’s time to start thinking about your landscape and how to safeguard it from the winter months. Find out from local landscapers exactly what you need—and DON’T
need—to protect your terrain.
Flowers and Beds ❍ ❍
Remove old mulch if there were any severe disease problems. Add a fresh application of approximately two inches of mulch. “Mulch helps conserve moisture, protects roots from extreme temperatures and helps reduce weeds,” says Todd Goulding of Goulding Design Group LLC.

When pruning flowers and plants, be sure to do it after they finish blooming. You don’t want to prevent any future blooms!
❍
Do NOT prune spring-blooming flowers and plants such as peonies, sweet peas and orchids. These and other blooming plants require pruning AFTER the bloom has emerged.

Remove warm-season annuals and replace with cool-season annuals. “Plant items like pansies, snapdragons, dusty millers, parsley, cabbage, kale and mustard plants,” Goulding says.

Cut back perennials.
Grasses and Lawns ❍ Perform your last cut for warm-season grasses—such as zoysia and Bermuda—at the end of October. ❍ Keep both warm- and cool-season grasses a little higher. “This helps keep the roots insulated for the winter,” says Rick Kaldrovics of Outside Landscape Group.
❍
Get a soil test done for cool-season grasses such as fescue. This is fairly inexpensive and will provide you with information on what kind of fertilizer to use, how much and when to apply. “It’s a foolproof way to have a gorgeous lawn this year,” Goulding says.

Between the Hedges “Clip evergreen hedges like boxwood, yaupon and holly from October through December. These are the ideal months for pruning, especially for heavy pruning. The plants stress less during the cooler months and have an easier time of recovering and putting on growth in the spring. Safety Measures “Winterizing a stone path or walkway can be simple. It’s best to pressurewash prior to the first freeze. Be mindful and careful with the pressurewasher around the edges where delicate plant material may be. This will get algae or moss off for the winter. If there are no plants or turf along the edges, there are a number of sprays that can be used to assist in the removal of the moss or algae build up. Also, remember not to use salt on a path that has groundcovers, perennials or herbs alongside the edges. The salts will more than likely burn or kill these plants.” —Neil Kain, Kain Landscape Inc.

Trees Be sure to inspect trees and the condition of their branches, then remove dead or diseased limbs. Jared Flanagan of Flanagan Landscape says to beware of trees known to be weak such as Bradford pears. “Keep trees of this nature away from structures, vehicles and high traffic areas,” he says. There are four types of tree-pruning that Neil Kain of Kain Landscape says are important:

Dead wood removal. This will prevent dead tree limbs from being broken off during wind and ice storms. Thinning. This removes internal parts that prevent new growth. Crown reduction. Downsizing trees that have grown too large allows for air to flow freely through branches to relieve unnecessary stress.

Canopy lifting. Removing lower limbs to raise the canopy up and away from the ground allows for more open space and less limbs to worry about breaking.
Watering Systems ❍ Be sure to turn off AND drain your sprinkler system and its pipes. “If the lines aren’t emptied, there’s going to be damage somewhere,” says Marcia Weber of Gardens to Love. “This is also a good time to check the entire system for leaks or head changes.”
❍
Empty the water of cement birdbaths and turn bowls upside down to keep water from collecting. “These will crack over time with the hard freezes that accompany Atlanta winters,” Goulding says. Another choice is to buy a birdbath made of metal, such as copper.

She also worked as an anchor for CNN Airport Network and CNN Headline News. Stacey first came to FOX 5 as a freelance reporter in 2004. Recycling can make a difference for us all

Clichés and proverbial sayings persist because they contain more than just a little truth. “Waste not, want not,” for example, has both private and public application. If the conservation concept of reuse, as discussed in our last article, is the private application, recycling is the public one. While the homeowner may not benefit directly from recycling, the indirect benefits are substantial. Oh, but recycling is so complicated and inconvenient! Gotta sort the stuff. Gotta store the stuff. Gotta find a place to take it. Sorting does seem a bit confusing. What IS recyclable, and what is not? Surprisingly, a pretty high percentage of our throwaway tonnage is recyclable; even kitchen garbage. Yep, composting is a kind of recycling. Keeping a compost heap is a topic that stands alone, but, suffice it to say that composting is an effective and directly beneficial way of recycling vegetable matter, from kitchen scraps to lawn clippings and leaf litter – not to mention paper. And, speaking of paper, whether you recycle or just trash the stuff, put it through the shredder, the cross-cut, jibble-it-up shredder. Anything personal, that is. Having seen everything from blank checks, bank statements, pay stubs, credit card statements and shipping invoices dumped whole in the recycling bin, I’m not surprised that identity theft is the problem it is.

OK, shred and compost paper; no problem. What about pernicious plastic? You got polyethylene, polystyrene, polypropylene and polyvinyl chloride and acry-/buta-/styre- combos that defy pronunciation. You’ve also got a code system that IDs the recycle category of each. The magic triangle and number code on plastic products confirms recyclability and the type of material. Ditto for glass. Putting like with like makes the system most effective, although it looks like China is perfectly happy to buy our unsorted recyclables in bulk and do the sorting at home. For most of us, the metal we recycle is in the form of cans. Aluminum or steel – a magnet will resolve the issue. Most counties and some municipalities provide recycling sites. Check out your local county or city services web page for specific information. You might find the government location also has an area where you can pick up wood-chip mulch or compost. Some even have a section where you leave unwanted items and look for a free swap. However you recycle your refuse, the benefit is long-term and short-term. If nothing else, you might be bolstering property value by reducing the need for a new landfill. Reduce, reuse, recycle – It works.

Combustion Air? Who Needs It? Household safety depends on code compliance.
As an inspector I find a high percentage of basement remodels that do not follow the building code for combustion air required for gas-burning appliances. Not only can this be hazardous to one’s health, but it can lead to loss of life. When we begin with an unfinished basement housing gasburning appliances we meet all requirements of needed combustion air to operate the gas water heater and gas furnace. No one lives in the basement, and no one sleeps close to the equipment. We have no restricted walls or units secured in air-tight spaces. All is good until the homeowner decides it is time to finish out the basement, and in those plans we often see the addition of a bedroom. Unfortunately, many basements are built without permits and by some contractors that have no awareness of current building codes. The homeowner, who is usually cost-conscious, decides to not apply for a permit and thus avoid tax increases. They also forego the services of an independent inspector to check on the work being performed on their home. This usually leads to a series of issues that are expensive to undo, especially if a family member or friend were to become ill or lose their life as a result of the shortcuts taken. When determining the amount of combustion air required, it is important to look at the space occupied by the appliance, the volume of air required and the type of construction. In a basement, if I were to find a small confined space housing the water heater and the furnace with a bedroom next to it, then all red flags would be raised. Without even checking on all other conditions, I immediately know we have a problem and provisions will need to be made immediately in order to protect the occupants of that home. Combustion air? Radon is a naturally occurring gas that comes from the breakdown of uranium. It is in soil, rocks and water and can be found just about anywhere, including your home. When you breathe air containing radon, you risk lung cancer. In fact, the Surgeon General has warned that radon is the second-leading cause of lung cancer in the U.S. today. It is inexpensive to have your home tested for radon ($25 to $150), and knowing your concentrated level number could save you and your family’s lives. Hire a certified professional contractor (listed on www.epa. gov and www.neha.org) to install a mitigation system for your home if levels are 4pCi/L or higher after being tested.

N Remove old mulch if there were any severe disease problems.
N Add a fresh application of approximately two inches of mulch. “Mulch helps conserve moisture, protects roots from extreme temperatures and helps reduce weeds,” says Todd Goulding of Goulding Design Group LLC.
N When pruning flowers and plants, be sure to do it after they finished blooming. You don’t want to prevent any future blooms!
N Do NOT prune spring-blooming flowers and plants such as
peonies, sweet peas and orchids. These and other blooming plants require pruning AFTER the bloom has emerged.
N Remove warm-season annuals and replace with cool-
season annuals. “Plant items like pansies, snapdragons,
dusty millers, parsley, cabbage, kale and mustard plants,” Goulding says.

What started out as a dated and closed-off kitchen is now an open and inviting gathering space for the Rollins family. Some of the features the family wanted in the new kitchen included more seating, better traffic flow, a dedicated food prep area and additional entertaining and storage space. Magnet Construction tackled these objectives by removing a section of an existing wall, relocating the sink and a doorway and adding a window to let in more natural light. “We absolutely love our new kitchen,” says homeowner Amy Rollins. “I still can’t believe that it is the same house. We entertain a lot more now.”
