country style, big city living OK, I’ll admit it. I’m a city girl. I love everything about being immersed in the center of a city. From listening to the horns blow as the morning’s bumper-to-bumper traffic increases to hitting the pavement for a run as I weave between high-rises and office buildings, I can’t get enough of the hustle and bustle that comes along with city life. But as much as I am drawn to fast-paced living, I do miss the simplicity of country charm. Thankfully, I don’t have to be without it much longer. Several Atlanta companies are making it easy for city slickers such as myself to have access to furnishings that incorporate rural design elements. In our feature on Farmhouse Style (p. 60), we take a look at metro Atlanta homes that infuse rustic materials (reclaimed wood, timeless antiques) to give their urban residence a farmhouse feel.

ome of the best interior designs look so effortless. They seem as if the room appeared by magic—composed, beautiful, and functional. But most interior designers will tell you that the effort it takes to make a room look “effortless” is sometimes Herculean. Designers must consider their clients’ tastes and integrate those with their wants and needs. This takes an eye for detail and a finger on the pulse of what’s trending and what’s timeless. We sought out these contractors and designers who have what it takes to make that magic happen.

Tyler Lynch By Stacy Moser

Tyler Lynch is a man with a secret. A secret he is willing to share—to help save Georgia’s endangered architectural treasures. Starting at a very young age, Tyler spent time helping out at his mother’s antique store in Powder Springs, Georgia. Days spent wandering amongst the wonders of that shop—from gilt chandeliers to sumptuous brocade draperies to tiny dollhouse furniture—imbued in Tyler an appreciation for interior design. He created displays, arranged merchandise and even sold vintage wares he had sourced on his own. As he grew up, Tyler worked at antique fairs and gift markets at AmericasMart, cultivating relationships with designers, storeowners, event planners and photographers that would become the basis for his future career. Now, as the metro Atlanta territory manager for Codarus, a national home décor showroom, Tyler takes advantage of that huge network of design resources to bring people together in the hunt for inspirational interior design.

Thrifting is the search for fabulous, low-cost, hidden treasures in out-of-the-way places ...

“I’ve always been a ‘people person,’” Tyler relates, smiling. “And when I can share my love for design and my passion for history and architecture with anyone I meet, I’m in my element.” It only seems natural that Tyler was more aware than most young adults about the fascinating history behind Georgia’s homes and public places. “One reason I feel so strongly about historic preservation now,” he explains, “is because so many buildings that I always loved are being torn down.” Tyler decided it wasn’t enough to mourn the loss of those architectural treasures—he wanted to make an impact on the

Part of the thrill is that you never know what you’ll find,” he enthuses.

“No better way to say it: The early bird gets the worm! Start thrifting as early as you can. I was in North Carolina the other day at a small shop where they had just gotten in some gorgeous iron gates at 8 in the morning. I was able to snap them up because I was there early. Now he reveals his resources, little-known shops and vendors in and around Atlanta, to raise money for The Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation. He arranges a bus tour, called “Thrift with Tyler,” that whisks enthusiastic antique hunters around town as he wines and dines them, sharing with them his infectious passion. “Everyone loves thrifting with Tyler,” says Atlanta-based writer Betsy Riley, who admires Tyler’s decision to divulge his secrets. “He decided to go public with his favorite places if it raised money for a good cause.”

the right fix If It's Broke, You Can Fix It! …Well, Maybe.

The problem:

I want to convert my small spare bedroom into a home office. How can I maximize storage space?

I blew my budget on a new bed, and don’t have the funds for a headboard. Any ideas?

The fix: Floating shelves (so-called because there are no brackets that show) are an easy way to convert a small closet into an attractive shelving unit. Remove the door from the closet, along with the hinges. Use spackling paste to hide the holes where the hinges connected to the doorframe. When the spackle dries, sand it lightly so its surface is even with the doorframe. Next, purchase unfinished wood floating-shelf kits from a local DIY store that are the width of your closet interior and at least two feet deep. Install the shelves to fit your storage needs and then paint them and the doorframe with a fresh coat of paint.

The fix: Here’s one very simple solution: Create a headboard using decorative wood molding that is nailed to the wall as an outline of a “faux” headboard. Cut pieces of molding at least 1-inch wide to outline where a headboard would normally be. Stain or paint the pieces in a color that contrasts with the wall. Attach them to the wall with finishing nails. You can stop here, or paint the inside of the “headboard” a hue that differs from the wall color.

The problem: I discovered mold under the carpet in our basement. I’ve removed the carpet and pressure-washed the floor, but what do I do about that weird smell?

The fix: That weird smell is probably a byproduct of mold that invaded the basement’s concrete floor. Concrete is porous, so it will absorb a bad odor just like a sponge. I can laugh about it now… I used drywall to finish my basement walls when I remodeled. Little did I know that you should never cut drywall with a circular saw—it created a giant cloud of dust that went everywhere, including inside my saw. The saw jammed and I had a cleanup job that lasted for days. It turns out you should use a razor knife to partially cut through the drywall’s surface and then it will just snap in half. Avoid using a power tool on drywall at all costs!

from drab kitchen pantry to dramatic wine cellar This Midtown couple was ready to reinvigorate their social life after their “nest” emptied and the kids moved out. They desired a place in the home to display their extensive wine collection, and didn’t want to store it in their basement, which was inconvenient to access when entertaining. Instead, they decided to transform their existing kitchen pantry into the wine cellar of their dreams.

Why relegate wine storage to the basement when you can make it a dramatic focal point in the entertainment epicenter of your home? Enter remodeling consultant Jennifer Reed of Atlanta’s MOSAIC Group [Architects and Remodelers]. Her goal was to create a focal point with the wine cellar, using materials that were reflective of the contemporary feel of the rest of the house. “The most important aspect of this space is the dramatic lighting,” she explains. “We chose LED lights to prevent the room from heating up—which would negatively affect the wine.” They also commissioned a custom art piece to add color and elegance to the room. The wood countertops were faux-finished to look like the concrete countertops that existed elsewhere. Finally, they installed custom glass doors with metal frames to match the windows of the house. “The homeowners are ecstatic about transforming this space. It’s very dramatic and modern in its design, which flows well with the rest of the house.”

Built in 1956 with numerous additions and renovations along the way, this northside Atlanta home went from tired to completely refreshed. The dated floor plan and random updates were flawlessly brought together for the custom requirements of this family. Unfinished attic space was transformed to a sonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s teen retreat. The master suite private entrance leads to an office, a bedroom and an updated master bath. A powder room was created in a more appropriate location, also creating a central common family space with both desk and table to accommodate multiple family activities. Conveniently off the fully renovated kitchen is a new mud entry and a larger laundry area. The sunny family room boasts a custom entertainment center, a wet bar and direct access to a new outdoor living space.

The home theater cabinets were creatively assembled from Wellborn stock cabinetry. A raised platform for theater seating and acoustic panels make for the perfect viewing environment. Lighting and other entertainment functions can be controlled from a tablet. The bar features a copper sink and a mirrored and raised bottle display area. A dishwasher, a microwave, a full-size refrigerator and a large wine chiller are included. The entire area includes luxurious furnishings and finishes that make the space truly enjoyable.

Mast Cabinetry specializes in custom and semi-custom cabinetry. The third-generation Amish Heritage familyowned-and-operated company was founded by Willis Mast. In collaboration with Rocco Sinisgalli, owner of Oneida Builders, Inc., the two worked together on an eight-week kitchen project. And after consulting with the homeowners, Mast and Sinisgalli created a fun yet functional kitchen that showcases both modern and traditional elements. The kitchen has a unique U-shaped island, a custom heat-resistant wall cabinet to house the TV above the cooktop, and a relaxing coffee bar. To achieve its open concept, a concealed beam replaced the old wall between the kitchen and dining room. And to bring in natural light, Oneida installed a large fixed glass window overlooking a new deck.

Habitat for Humanity International operates in all 50 states of the United States, the District of Columbia, Guam, Puerto Rico and dozens of other countries. The ReStore concept began in 1991 as a way to utilize home goods and materials offered to the Habitat organization by well-meaning donors. Staff and volunteers accept donations of new and gently used furniture, lighting, home improvement items, appliances and building materials, which are then offered for sale at deep discounts to the public, generating funds for the affiliates’ home-building projects and keeping tons of usable items out of landfills. The inventory can vary by location and time of visit. Merchandise is contributed by individuals, well-known manufacturers, retail stores, builders and remodelers. All donations must be in excellent physical and working condition. Based on individual circumstances, donors may qualify for a tax deduction. “What makes this business unique is that everyone benefits,” said NARI Atlanta’s Executive Director Jesse Morado. “Donors may qualify for a tax deduction, remodelers save dumpster fees, materials don’t end up in landfills and shoppers get a valuable discount.”

When a mom in Johns Creek wanted her active teenage boys to have an outdoor space to play, she turned to HGTV’s Chip Wade for help. The “Elbow Room” host worked to maximize the usefulness of the family’s backyard by adding cool features like a pool deck with moveable sections, a recessed fire pit, and a batting cage. “It’s really built for year-round enjoyment,” Wade says. “The platforms that move along the pool transform its functionality to accommodate a variety of entertaining options like extending the sun deck for a party,” he says.

Thermacore series steel doors can be designed with any window configuration to fit the preference of the homeowner and style of the home. These Modern Aluminum series doors replaced the more dated, standard 25-year-old wood doors.

This was a “curb appeal” upgrade with a custom wood door, which was made in our Midtown woodshop. This upgrade also addresses the sloping ground issue and provided a tighter seal following the ground line.

Carriage House steel doors replaced the wood doors that were original to the home. The new steel insulated doors have tripled the R-Value of the original doors and require much less maintenance. In addition, the switch to a three-section door makes the windows much more impactful.
