Staycations Atlanta’s Most Exquisite Outdoor Living

Outdoor living is the concept of creating functional outdoor spaces or “rooms,” extending your living space from within your home into your outdoor environment. More and more of us are choosing to stay home and vacation in our own backyard. Adding an outdoor living room complete with grill, refrigerator, fireplaces, water features and comfortable seating areas is like creating a resort on your own property. With outdoor lighting, landscape plantings, pavilions and pools, we may never want to leave home again. Our designs can help you take advantage of Georgia’s ideal climate for outdoor living.

ON THE COVER: This home’s kitchen, designed by Vincent Longo Custom Builders, was meticulously designed with a primary emphasis on lighting that strikes the perfect balance between form and function. Oversized chandelier-style pendants were selected to hang above the island to help fill the large space and also bring a touch of warmth and elegance to the area. The chandeliers were flanked with recessed lighting to provide extra task lighting as needed, while dimmers allow the homeowners to create the exact environment they need for entertaining or preparing. Frameless Shower Enclosures

I’ve always been a fan of nontraditional pairings, whether that means coupling a contemporary couch with vintage end tables, or combining muted prints with funky ones to outfit a home’s interior. When it comes to the exterior or a home, however, one of my favorite trends is incorporating stone with other materials, be it brick, stucco, wood… you name it. Luckily, mixing materials is on the rise, and the options are endless, especially when it comes to stone. Perhaps the best part is that many of the stone options on the market today are sustainable and quarried close to home. Check out our special section on sustainable stone beginning on page 27 for everything you need to know about what kind of stone you should select, where to find it, how much it costs, how to use it and more. But if you’re focusing on your home’s interior for the time being, consider taking a look at the multitude of lighting options available. Living rooms, dining areas, bathrooms and home theatres all require different forms of illumination to function at their fullest potential, and we’ve broken down those room-by-room options in our lighting feature starting on page 60. If you’re planning on attending the 27th Annual Fall Atlanta Home Show this month, which takes place the 24-26 at the Cobb Galleria Centre, be sure to stop by our booth and say hello! We’ll be there all weekend, along with hundreds of other exhibitors. For more information, check out our Home Show Directory beginning on page 39. We hope to see you there!

Expert Q&A

Q:

I currently have granite countertops in my kitchen, but want to mix different materials for my island. What surface(s) do you recommend?

A: Photo courtesy of IceStone

Dal-Tile Now Distributing IceStone Atlanta-based natural stone and tile distributor, Dal-Tile Corporation, recently announced that it will begin carrying IceStone products. IceStone is a leader in the green countertops industry, producing products made with 100-percent recycled materials in a cement matrix. Founded 5 years ago with green-minded investors such as Ben & Jerry’s, IceStone manufactures the only durable surface to achieve a Gold Level Cradle to Cradle certification. Visit www.dal-tile.com for more information about the product.

When specifying different countertop materials in a kitchen wherein granite is installed on the perimeter, I love using a metal countertop on the island as a complete departure from stone. Depending on the overall design of the kitchen, you could use pewter, zinc, copper or brass for metal countertops. By using specialized details, your designer can work with artists to develop your ideas from a design vision to a finished product truly special for you. —Robin Pittman, Designer, Design Galleria Kitchen and Bath Studio

MODA Extends Exhibit The Museum of Design Atlanta recently announced that it will extend its Atlanta: Beyond Bricks & Sticks exhibit through 2011. Spotlighting many of the metro area’s outstanding design examples, the exhibit tells the stories of the people who live, work, learn and play in the city’s sustainable structures. Exhibit components include an interactive Atlanta Green Map, a “What is Your Carbon Footprint?” quiz, video interviews, an intimate look at student life at Dekalb County’s LEED Silver Certified Arabia Mountain High School and many other features that explain and celebrate green living. The exhibit premiered in February of this year at the World of Coca-Cola and has traveled throughout the city to venues including the CNN Center, Cobb Galleria Centre, Atlanta Dogwood Festival and more. Atlanta: Beyond Bricks & Sticks will be on display at the Gwinnett Environmental and Heritage Center this month through the end of the year. Visit www.museumofdesign.org for more information on where the exhibit will travel in 2011.

Scapes Back Under Local Ownership After 2 years under the ownership of Valleycrest, a national landscape company, Marietta-based landscape group Scapes has been sold back to its original partners, Evan Rogers and Pete Wilkerson. Rogers and Wilkerson acquired the company after realizing that Valleycrest’s focus was commercial maintenance and commercial bid landscape projects, while Scapes’ main focus revolves around design/build with an emphasis on residential work. “Our focus is strictly on our local projects again and not trying to help out on a national level in the development of residential markets,” Wilkerson says. “We now can pay all of our attention to delivering creative and value-effective projects. We worked very hard to make sure during the original acquisition and the reacquisition that everything was seamless to our clients.” Rogers and Wilkerson have been with the Scapes entity since 1996 and have more than 20 years of experience in the design/ build business, and both have won numerous national awards for their projects. Q:

My kids and I have allergies that don’t seem to go away with the season. How can we reduce the number of allergens in our house?

A:

If antihistamines are not working, your house could be making you sick. If you already live in a green-certified house, then it may be the way you are living. Stop using chemicals that supposedly “clean” the surface, but pollute the air. Most cleaners contain toxins that evaporate into the air and further aggravate allergies. Vinegar and water is a more effective antibacterial cleaner than most name-brand ones. Bugs can also be a problem. Cockroaches are known to carry allergens, so nontoxic (to humans) pest control can help control them. Dust mites are also a common cause of allergies. In our house, we put a special cover on our son’s mattress to prevent the dust mites from growing in it. —Matt Hoots is CEO of The Hoots Group Inc., vice chair of the GAHBA Green Building Council and board member for MyDesign Partners.

Rock Solid Choices In a time when more people are searching for sustainable materials to build their homes, stone remains in the spotlight. Because much of the stone used on homes in Georgia is quarried nearby, shipping and transportation costs are lower, and homeowners can enjoy the feeling of having a home that is constructed with local products. While a variety of stone options are available, running the gamut from bluestone to limestone, the most popular options among Georgia residents are some that are quarried right here at home and close by in neighboring states. “Tennessee stack stone J&C Stone Design Inc. These varieties are usually quarried in north Georgia and into Tennessee. Granites, also quarried in Georgia, are another option common to the area. “Most stones that are quarried in Georgia are gray-colored stones, such as granite from Elberton or Lithonia,” Medrano says. The cost of stone applications vary, but stack stone generally runs about $160 per ton, while a typical flagstone ranges from $260-$290 per ton. This translates to homeowners at a cost of anywhere from $11 to $30 per square foot. Because the cost is usually significantly higher than that of materials such as vinyl siding, concrete, wood or stucco, stone is more often found on higher-end homes. However, when used as an accent or a veneer, the material becomes affordable for any homeowner seeking a natural yet refined look.

Another Sustainable Option: Brick If you’re looking to mix your materials, consider adding brick accents. While brick is still one of the pricier home-building materials, it’s generally less expensive than stone (at $6-$12 per square foot) and still made to withstand the test of time. Brick is also low maintenance and has some environmental benefits: • Most brick manufacturers have significantly reduced the energy needed to manufacture and transport brick. • Brick plants are now using nonfossil fuel resources, such as burning methane from landfills and agricultural waste products. • Brick can largely be made by using recycled materials. —Crysta Allen, Boral Bricks Inc.

When it comes to using stone around your home, the options are limitless. “Stone is used for many applications on exteriors of homes, from wall veneers to columns and flagstone patios,” Dixon says. Most homeowners use stone as more of an accent than as the primary

natural stone veneer, which is usually about 1 inch thick. Choosing a veneer will give your home the same natural-stone look without the extra weight and cost. Today’s most popular trends in using stone on a home’s exterior include placing the material around the entryway and lower floors of the home. Using stone on an entryway creates a dramatic first impression, as a visitor’s eyes are usually drawn immediately to the front door. Stone is also commonly used in columns and on patios at the front of the home, which gives the impression of strength and natural beauty. To add interest, some Photo courtesy of Boral Bricks Inc.

homeowners opt to vary the cut and shape of stone used around their homes, including cobbles, boulders and pavers, in addition to stacking and veneers. If you aren’t looking to remodel your home, but still want to incorporate stone around your property, there are a variety of ways to do so. “Stone can be used for outdoor appointments such as fireplaces, water features, outdoor kitchens and more,” Dixon says. Mailboxes and walkways are also ideal places to add stone detail to your home. “You can also include stone in grilling areas, pool areas and retaining walls,” Medrano says. The options are endless, especially with local remodeling and landscaping companies, which are apt to get creative with your spaces. A retaining wall combined with a beautiful stone outdoor kitchen and fireplace can add an entire outdoor room to your home. www.homeimprovementmag.com

Built to Last market, it definitely has its benefits when it comes to maintenance. “Stone is a great option for exterior or interior home improvements; stucco and concrete won’t last as long and would have to be replaced more often,” Medrano says. “There’s not much deterioration with stone, and you don’t have to replace it multiple times.” Because it is a strong, natural product, stone will stand the test of time, especially when properly installed. Regular maintenance is limited to pressure washing once every several years at most. Mortar should not need to be replaced or repaired until years down the road. Homeowners may hose off stone any time they wish, but its rugged strength and natural beauty make regular cleaning unnecessary.

Cost-Saving Alternatives Stone is considered a sustainable option because it is locally quarried and natural. However, if you’re seeking a less expensive option, there are other sustainable materials available, such as manmade stone or concrete pavers. For example, Belgard Hardscapes’ Dufferin Stone veneer exhibits the beauty of natural stone, but is more cost effective and available in a variety of colors and textures. Waterford stone is a similar option. “Our products have the look and feel of natural stone and can be used in many hardscape applications,” says Aaron Faubli of Oldcastle Architectural, manufacturers of both products. www.homeimprovementmag.com

Stone Stand-In If you’re seeking a substitute for stone, consider EnviroStone. It is applied as a veneer and has several notable qualities: • Similar to Venetian plaster, it can be polished to a high gloss. • It can be applied over old concrete, wood or virtually anything else and sets in 48 hours. • It can be applied at a thickness of only 1/8 to 3/8 of an inch, while concrete will crack when applied that thinly. • Texture can be varied to create a natural stone look. • EnviroStone is available at only $1.50 to $2 per square foot. • It can be professionally installed or sold to do-ityourselfers. —Allen Sales, EnviroStone LLC

Cultured stone, a manufactured stone made from concrete, is another popular choice. Like most of today’s manmade stones, it can be difficult to see a difference between this fabricated option and natural stone. However, while natural stone is usually stacked, manufactured stone is adhered to the home with a cement mixture and can be applied over most materials, including brick, concrete and wood. With all the installation options available, manufactured stone can look just as elegant, unique and natural. Photo courtesy of Belgard

For an eco-friendly option, Belgard Hardscapes also offers an environmental line, which includes Subterra Stone. These stone pavers, which can be used for anything from driveways to patios, have a natural, chiseled look and are permeable, so they reduce pollution by decreasing runoff from a rainstorm by as much as 100 percent. Whether you choose the real thing and build with natural Georgia stone or cut costs by using a high-quality manufactured product, you can increase the beauty of your home, as well as your pride in it. “Stone brings a unique look to your home,” Medrano says, “and believe it or not, it can really change the amount of time you spend on the exterior of your home.” www.homeimprovementmag.com

Interactive Fire Safety Experience for the Whole Family The Atlanta Home Show purchased Georgia’s first fire safety house back in the late 1980’s realizing then the positive impact it could have on saving lives, especially those of children. This year’s show is pleased to continue those efforts through the Georgia Firefighters Burn Foundation and the Cobb County Fire Department’s Fire Safety Hazard House. This is a rare opportunity for you to experience WITH your children the look, smell and feel of escaping a house fire while learning fire prevention techniques at the same time. Firefighters will be on hand throughout the entire show to help you create a fire safety escape plan for your family, an easy process that could have life saving results! We are proud to support the amazing work of the Georgia Firefighters Burn Foundation (www.gfbf.org) in their efforts to keep children safe and offer valuable services and assistance to those who are suffering the lifelong physical and emotional pain associated with burns. Your children won’t want to miss all the fun interactive things to do in this feature area while learning more about fire safety and prevention. Children 12 and under receive free admission to the Atlanta Home Shows!

There is something exciting here for everyone, so be sure to visit www.AtlantaHomeShow.com for all your show information needs such as a complete list of exhibiting companies, special features, show hours, ticket prices, show location and stage schedules.

Christine Fortenberry Awarded Business Grant Grant helps women further their careers in the building industry Christine Fortenberry, owner of Fortenberry Construction Services in Powder Springs, Ga., received a “Women of the Future” grant from the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) Professional Women in Building. The grant, designed to help women further their careers by obtaining certifications or continuing their education, was awarded earlier this year. Underwritten by Merillat, one of the nation’s largest cabinet manufacturers, the “Women of the Future” grant is awarded to members of the NAHB Professional Women in Building who are pursuing careers in the building industry. “We are proud to recognize Christine’s commitment to increasing her knowledge and involvement in the building industry,” said Susan Cross, Merillat Communications and Public Relations Manager. “We hope this grant will help her to continue to be successful in her business, and we wish her the very best.” New Business Built to Last For 36 years, Fortenberry operated a home building business in the Atlanta area. But in 2007, when the credit market collapsed, she lost that business and found herself starting over. “It was devastating,” she recalled. But she decided to pick herself up and redefine herself as a residential general contractor, and started Fortenberry Construction Services in November 2007.

But Fortenberry went beyond simply starting a new company. She noticed a shift in the way people looked at homes. “People want to be close to their jobs and to public transit. They want to remodel instead of build, and they want their homes to accommodate multiple generations,” she said. With her education and experience as a builder and a designer, Fortenberry saw tremendous opportunity. Although 2009 was a challenging year, her efforts to redefine herself seem to be paying off and she is optimistic. “I’m covered in bidding opportunities,” she said. Fortenberry plans to use her grant to add to her long list of professional designations and obtain a light commercial designation on her general contractor’s license. This will allow her to expand her services to include town homes, apartments and other structures up to five stories. She also plans to get a real estate license so she can offer property management. She feels adding these credentials to her offerings are a winning combination. “Many contractors don’t have the capabilities I do,” she said. “No matter what it is, I am the go-to person to get the job done.” “As a Diamond sponsor of the NAHB, one of Merillat’s proudest contributions is helping to further the education of women in all aspects of the building

industry — women like Christine,” continued Cross. “This is especially important as women have become major players in an industry that has historically been dominated by men.” To learn more about Merillat, see the latest kitchen and bath storage features available and to find a Merillat kitchen and bath professional near you, visit Merillat.com.

Tips for creating a lighting design that ďŹ ts your lifestyle By Kathy Kidwell and Shelby Stevens

element that truly defines the aesthetics and comfort of a home. In fact, without this element, all other components of a room would be invisible. The element is light, and its

amount, location and direction can make or break the function and style of your home.

Rules of thumb The standard rule of thumb for any room’s lighting design is to create three layers of illumination: general lighting (a.k.a. ambient lighting), task lighting and accent lighting. Another guideline is to be mindful of the light source’s Kelvin temperature.

Quick Tip: “Lighting can be

Kitchen lighting consists of three layers: local task lighting in work areas, general lighting for the room and accent or mood lighting, according to Sherer and Adams. “Serious cooks deserve serious lighting!” One way to achieve dual-purpose lighting is to use ceiling cans, or recessed lighting, to aid in food preparation. Supplement that with under-cabinet lighting for added visual enhancement and mood lighting.

While you want to have plenty of light when you’re enjoying a meal, Shawn Hill of Lux Lighting Limited says that eating areas require less direct lighting. “A central pendant or chandelier with surrounding cans or down lights is a good solution,” he says. One overthe-table lighting option is a chandelier with upwardfacing lights, which add a soft glow and prevent table glare.

The use of a dimmer or low wattage light sources in living areas is a great idea, because, as Doug Root of Atlanta Light Bulbs says, “Low light puts less glare on your TV, which helps people avoid squinting.”

Dressing areas should always be well illuminated for distinguishing [between similar] colors, such as black from blue,” Michael Fortson of Illuminations says. Halogen lamps are the best source for clear, white light that shows true colors. Sherer and Adams also suggest using fluorescents with compatible lamps in closets and dressing areas. “They offer a lot of light with a little heat,” they say.

Technological advances As energy efficiency continues to be a primary concern among homeowners, LED lighting technologies are continually advancing. Ask any lighting specialist or interior designer which new products they’re excited about, and an LED offering will surely make the list. Although some new products are still being tweaked for color quality, Fortson says that LED is the most efficient lighting source on the market today. “The best quality LEDs can last up to 50,000 hours or more,” he says. Hill adds to the positive points of LEDs, saying, “Manufactures claim they consume 80 to 90 percent less energy than equivalent incandescent light bulbs and have a predicted life span of up to 15 years operating for 12 hours a day,” he says. Hill also points out that they contain no lead, mercury or other harmful heavy metals, which in turn eliminates disposal and health concerns.

lighting control to be more convenient and accessible, but it also increases energy efficiency.

“It is always important to consider energy and convenience, and there are several options that meet both of these needs, such as hand-held remotes, wall-mounted keypads, table-top controls and occupancy and vacancy sensors which help to ensure lights are off,” says Jessica Ferguson, director of marketing of Sunbelt Technology. Regardless of whether you’re considering lighting re-styling in just one room or you’re planning a whole-home makeover, open your eyes to the many possibilities on the market today and lighten up your life! A: Utilizing compost is a great method for creating a humusrich garden. You can obtain bagged compost from a local retailer or you may be able to go to a nearby horse farm and buy manure, but choosing either of these options will result in the material having to be hauled to your garden site. By making compost at home, however, you can have an endless supply of materials to use whenever needed. A compost pile can be started at almost any time of the year, but breakdown may be limited in cooler weather. To

In fact, with all household and landscaping “waste” that can be added to your pile, it is possible to reduce your household garbage by about 30 percent! Once you have a well-developed compost system, you’ll continuously have good humus material to add to your plantings, and you’ll be doing wonders for the environment. Q: Both my front and back lawns are almost completely bare, with the exception of a few young dogwoods that my husband and I recently planted. What are some affordable plant options and placement techniques for creating a “fuller” lawn? A: This dilemma is frequently a challenge for homeowners. Consider a few foundation plantings and a little lawn care and you’ll be on the road to a beautiful yard. First, if you have no existing planting beds, take a garden hose and use it to create bed lines. Keep your lawn mower in mind when doing this so edges aren’t curved too sharply. Also decide how you will use your lawn. Do you have children or animals that may like a larger lawn space, or would a smaller, lower-maintenance lawn area work just as well? Trace along the hoses with turf paint so you can see the final product and

8

remove any grass within the planting bed area. For plants, I recommend some sturdy shrubs and tough perennials. They’ll get larger, and in some cases spread, as they get older and take up more room. Shrubs and trees can be discounted in the fall and early winter months. Be sure to get a mix of deciduous and evergreens. Viburnum, Osmanthus, Cammelia, Hydrangea, Itea and Chamaecyparis are some of my personal favorites. Perennials also add a nice spark to the landscape. Chrysanthemum, Hellebores, Phlox, ferns, hostas and Salvia are easy to grow and give great bang for the buck.

9

Put some pine straw under your new plants to tidy up and hold in moisture. To increase the lushness of your lawn, you might want to consider over-seeding. There are some great new fescue-Bermuda blends on the market now, so lawns stay mostly green year round. Just by seeding grass and planting a few foundation plants in a mulched bed, your yard will instantly look fuller. —Amanda Campbell is manager of display gardens for the

10

Atlanta Botanical Garden, where she has worked for eight years. She also teaches various classes and speaks to gardening and corporate groups.

Q: What are some low-maintenance flowers and bushes I can plant this autumn, and how much day-to-day attention do they require?

11

A: Fall is the best time for planting most ornamentals in Georgia. In my opinion, you can’t go wrong if you consult the Georgia Gold Medal plant list. Each year, the Georgia Gold Medal Plant Committee selects flowers, shrubs, trees, groundcovers and vines that are well-adapted throughout most of Georgia, readily available and provide seasonal interest. An added bonus is that all are low maintenance once established! Here are a few seasonal options: Lenten Rose (Helleborus orientalis) – A shade-tolerant, deer-resistant, flowering

beautiful sculpture in winter. Arkansas Blue Star (Amsonia hubrectii) – This deer-resistant perennial is a traffic stopper in fall, when the foliage turns golden yellow and glows when sunlight strikes it. Drought-tolerant and low maintenance once established, amsonia’s light blue star-like flowers emerge from feathery stems in the spring. Plant in full sun to partial shade. Pride of Augusta Carolina Jessamine (Gelsemium caroliniana ‘Pride of Augusta’) – Adding vertical interest, this vine is a beautifully reliable addition to the garden. Flowering from January through April and sporadically through the year, this yellow double-flowering vine is easy to establish and train on a trellis, fence or wall. It’s also noninvasive and deer resistant. Plant in full sun to partial shade for best results. Autumn Fern (Dryopteris erythrosor) – Ferns are lovely in the landscape, and this variety is ideal for a shady, moist environment. New fronds unfold as bright, coppery red and then gradually fade to olive green. Although freezing temperatures, ice and snow sometimes burn the foliage, the plant is reliably evergreen in most parts of Georgia. —Mary Kay Woodworth is executive director of the Metro Atlanta Landscape and Turf Association (MALTA). Windows and doors add style, light, entry and insulation to your home. Whether it’s time to upgrade to a more energy-efficient option or update to the latest trends, there’s a product to fit your budget, style and needs. Custom options The latest trend in windows and doors is customization, from choosing the shape, size and color to hardware selection. Homeowners also continue to demand low-maintenance choices. Options such as fiberglass doors, which require minimal upkeep, and aluminum-clad wood windows are becoming some of the more popular choices. Windows that allow easy access from a home’s interior for cleaning are also sought after. Green outlook The biggest trend by far in home improvement and design is utilizing environmentally friendly products and services. For windows and doors, ecofriendly and energy-efficient benefits are typical sales features. For example, a a product’s insulation value, UV coatings and the types of materials used are all “green” factors. Selecting a style There’s a window design to suit every homeowner’s style, including bay and bow, awning, picture, double-hung, sliding, transom and casement. When it comes to choosing a new entry or exterior door, there are three common types: wood, steel and fiberglass. When choosing windows and doors, make sure to consider energy efficiency, durability, maintenance and available style and color choices, as well as the cost. The payoff While finding the right windows and doors for your home may take some research, investing time and money in quality products is well worth your while. Doing so can increase your home’s resale value and lead to lower utility bills, while maximizing its curb appeal at the same time. 68

installation issues National statistics prove that properly installed windows will perform up to specifications for longer than the warranted life of the window. Excessive condensation, air leaks, heat loss, warped or out-of-square windows are the result of faulty installation—not faulty manufacture. Unfortunately these problems won’t usually show up until months after the installation and are not covered by the window warranty. —American Window and Door Institute

Sit Back, Relax and Enjoy … but not until you do your homework BY SHELBY STEVENS

test drive it A hot tub isn’t something you should purchase from an Internet site; you need to be able to see how it feels, how well you fit, how the features function and how noisy it is. You don’t want to get the tub home and realize it’s so noisy you can’t carry on a conversation. Some retailers and manufacturers, such as Hot Spring Spas, have wet spas in their showrooms and invite customers in for a private test soak. “This enables the buyer to make smart decisions on what spa, seats and jets are going to comfort them while using their spa,” says Shelli Graves of Hot Spring Spas.

Photo courtesy of Neptune Pools, www.neptunepools.com

Deciding to buy a hot tub is about more than just making a purchase—it’s about making a long-term investment. Hot tubs can increase your home’s value, provide a place to relax and even offer health benefits ranging from better sleep to relief for back, knee and arthritis pain. Whatever your reasons for adding one of these massaging, relaxing and downright amazing amenities to your home, check out the following tips for finding the tub that will suit all your needs. Maintenance issues When considering ease of maintenance, look for a 24-hour circulation pump—it uses less wattage than a light bulb and circulates water through the filters. Next on the list? An ozonator. This device converts oxygen to ozone gas and, in turn, acts as a sanitizer, helping fight water contaminants such as bacteria that can irritate your eyes and skin. Alice Cunningham of Olympic Hot Tub Company also suggests using SilkBalance, a self-adjusting water-care formula that fights odors and allergens while helping keep water crystal clear. Lights, camera, action Hot tubs range from basic to elaborate models that can include waterfalls, lighting features, refrigerators and more. A basic hot tub that includes circulation, filtration and water-care features will cost about $5,000 or less and will typically seat four people. “Going larger, plus adding lighting features, waterfalls, music systems and even a TV on a high-quality hot tub will bring the cost to [approximately] $14,000,” Cunningham says. These prices, for both lower- and high-quality hot tubs, should also include a thermal cover, delivery and set-up. Bringing your hot tub home When you’re ready have your hot tub installed, make sure you have an area ready for it. “Bringing home the enjoyment of a spa may be easier than you expect. Set-up is simple, and there’s no need for expensive construction or plumbing lines,” says Shelli Graves of Hot Spring Spas. The main task is choosing a level site for the tub to sit. If you’re placing it on a deck, make sure the decking is reinforced to adequately support the weight and avoid buying a model that supports all of its weight on the perimeter. If you opt to put your tub somewhere other than the deck, make sure you have a concrete pad or a level patio. Or, you can use a Handi-Spa Pad, a plastic base that offers a durable surface for your hot tub. The Handi-Spa Pad boasts speedy installation and is an easy and affordable way to provide a foundation for your new hot tub. 70

warranty Be sure to check out the warranty. Look for a comprehensive, straightforward 5-year parts-and-labor guarantee. Alice Cunningham of Olympic Hot Tub Company warns of lifetime warranties. “A warranty is only as good as the dealer who is selling the hot tub,” she says. “Check references!” She adds that buyers should find out how large the manufacturing company is—including the number of locations and amount of inventory—as well as how long it has manufactured hot tubs; this will help gauge how long the company will be around in the future.

With the recent downturn in the housing market, it is important to be both smart and creative when considering your financing options. Here are some helpful tips on budgeting for your home improvements. Plan ahead “It’s really important to do your homework before making a decision,” says Edward J. decordemon Shedding Light on Windows How to treat them right BY BRIAN PATRICK FLYNN Photography by Sarah Dorio

Windows are a great opportunity to add function and flair to any space. The proper window treatment can make or break a room for many reasons: light control, insulation, sound, scale, pattern and texture. Here are some cost-effective examples of doing your windows justice. OUT OF SIGHT, OUT OF MIND

Many new construction homes have sad, silly contractor-grade vinyl windows. While these are great for modern energy needs, they’re horrible for aesthetics. Proper use of layering leaves these eyesores out of sight and out of mind. My rule of thumb is the introduction of natural textures with operable, woven shades such as these from texton.com. Next, bring in the drama with pleated, lined draperies like these pink satin panels from The Urban Drapery Company. When budgeting for your own project, keep in mind that drapers charge per panel width. If your window is small and only needs one pair of single-width panels, the fabrication cost may come out just slightly above “off-the-rack” panels from retail stores. Why not spend a teeny bit more for a much higher-end look?

BLINDED BY THE LIGHT

Sometimes all we need is just a little bit of privacy from our neighbors. That’s where sheers come in. For expansive window areas such as in this high-rise living room, consider floor-to-ceiling sheers. They slightly filter light and help soften the space while also creating a slight wall of privacy. Sheers don’t have to be girly or frou-frou. For modern spaces, stick with simple, tailored pleats—such as fan pleats or pinch pleats—and opt for aluminum track instead of rods and rings. If you’re concerned about things looking too feminine, consider darker colors such as brown, charcoal or navy blue, which can appear more masculine but also serve as neutrals. The brown acrylic sheer seen here was a major cost saver at only $6.99 a yard from IKEA.

CENTER OF ATTENTION

Got a bedroom with an oddly placed window that keeps you wondering where to place the bed? Solve that probably with floor-to-ceiling draperies on a ceiling-mounted track. My draper, Donna, created this entire wall of draperies so the bed could be properly centered on them instead of the small window. By keeping a split down the center of the wall, it allows the draperies to still be pulled back to let light in when necessary while also adding symmetry to the room. Expansive walls can require a ton of fabric yardage. A great way to keep material costs low but spend on custom fabrication and installation is to search the fabric department of IKEA Atlanta. They’ve got dozens of graphic prints for less than $8 per yard.

Rooms that get too much light for their own good can be tamed with blackout liner. For example, this dining room in Midtown gets insanely hot from the afternoon sun. My seamstress, Kim, lined the dark brown drapery panels with blackout liner to limit the intake of natural light. In addition to its functional elements, the blackout liner also helps lighter-weight fabrics to hang nicer. Believe it or not, these draperies are simply 100-percent cotton IKEA panels that were retro-fitted with pleats and liner for a high-end look without the high-end price per yard.

Coyotes have all sorts of admirable qualities: they’re intelligent, tenacious, crafty and, in good health, wonderfully handsome animals. They are brave and dedicated parents and adaptable to everchanging conditions. The only problem with coyotes is that they are here. And their many admirable traits make them the perfect, persistent pests. Deer can nibble your precious landscape shrubs, rabbits will raid the garden and squirrels keep you awake with attic romps. But coyotes—bereft of roadrunners as a food source—are perfectly happy to put your pets on the menu. Coyotes are both individual and pack hunters and, at 50 pounds or so, quite capable of taking on good-sized

They are said to cross-breed with feral dogs and are the bearers of disease, including rabies. In the country, coyote control often includes gun-smoke and “termination with extreme prejudice. In towns or suburbs, such an approach is neither prudent nor legal. Master Plans attractive by securing the garbage, eliminating outdoor pet food caches, responding loudly and aggressively when the critters are spotted or fencing your yard to limit their access. You will still be part of a home range that includes your own and adjacent neighborhoods. Coordinated effort within and between communities is the only way to have any substantial effect. Coyote incursion is not a temporary condition; it is the extension of

a historical migration that has been in process for decades. The coyote population in Atlanta will increase, pet casualties will multiply and the potential for disease will continue to be a problem. Part of any neighborhood watch should target these four-legged interlopers, as well as the bipedal scoundrels and pooled resources set aside to respond to coyote populations with a comprehensive effort. Be reconciled to the idea that such an effort will not end well for the furry individuals involved. Relocation is not an option. Neither the Fish and Wildlife Service nor the Georgia Department of Natural Resources will condone the relocation of potentially diseased pest species— difficult choices, but I bet I can guess which way your cat or Corgi would

september Tips for creating and maintaining a beautiful garden BY MARY KAY WOODWORTH

It’s still hot during the daytime this month, but by midSeptember, cooler evenings roll in. Fall is the best time of year to plant just about anything, so get ready to spend time in the garden! Garden Maintenance

➤ Pinch back summer annuals for flowering through first frost. Later in the month, look for fall chrysanthemums to add fresh color to your container plantings and then plant them in the yard.

➤ Roses perk up as cooler temperatures arrive. Treat them to a water-soluble fertilizer (20-20-20) and you should get one last hurrah of blooms before frost.

➤ Prevent winter lawn weeds (such as chickweed and henbit) by applying a pre-emergent weed preventer now. Use one that is safe for all lawn types, but note that if you are reseeding a fescue lawn now the preventer should not be applied.

➤ Fertilize fescue lawns in mid-September. Use a starter fertilizer if you have just planted seeds; otherwise use a fertilizer recommended for established fescue CHRYSANTHEMUMS: These bright blooms are a great addition to container gardens and landscapes this month.

lawns.

➤ Fertilize Bermuda lawns with a winterizer fertilizer late this month. All other warm-season grasses should not be fertilized until May.

www.homeimprovementmag.com

8/12/10 3:01:50 PM

➤ Cut back annuals and fall-blooming perennials now for continued blooms. Deadhead late-summer-blooming perennials such as echinacea and rudbeckia.

➤ Don’t bag up those fallen leaves; instead, use them as mulch under trees and shrubs, either as they are or ground up using a mulching mower. Add excess leaves to your compost pile.

What to Plant

➤ Plant, move and revitalize perennial flowers late this month through November. Water them well after planting and with 3/4 inches of water whenever the soil gets dry.

➤ Divide hosta, daylilies and iris. ➤ By late September, it’s cool enough to plant containergrown trees, shrubs and perennials. Be sure to water them deeply and mulch 2-3 inches for best results.

➤ Fescue seed can be planted from mid-month through mid-October. Before planting fescue, use a non-selective herbicide, such as Round-Up or Finale, to kill weeds in established fescue lawns. You will be able to plant the seed within 7-10 days.

➤ Plant peonies, poppies and bearded iris now for springtime flowers.

Your Backyard Paradise!

➤ Did you move houseplants outdoors so that they could enjoy the summer weather? Move them inside when evening temperatures reach the mid-50s. Before you do, inspect them for insects and treat with appropriate insecticides—wait 2 weeks after spraying to bring them indoors.

➤ It’s time to plant chrysanthemums. For best results, plant mums in a sunny location in well-drained soil. Keep them uniformly moist while they are being established. Fertilize 4 weeks after planting.

Dal-Tile Now Distributing IceStone

Atlanta-based natural stone and tile distributor, Dal-Tile Corporation, recently announced that it will begin carrying IceStone products.

—Robin Pittman, Designer, Design

Rules of thumb The standard rule of thumb for any room’s lighting design is to create three layers of illumination: general lighting (a.k.a. ambient lighting), task lighting and accent lighting. Another guideline is to be mindful of the light source’s Kelvin temperature. “It is important to use the correct Kelvin temperature for each specific room,”

Michael Jackson, president of American-De Rosa Lamparts, manufacturer of Sunset Lighting products and Concord fans, explains another lighting-design guideline: “Every pre-defined activity associated with a room should have a ‘lighting strategy,’” he says. “For example, a dining room is obviously designed for dining, but the space

Q: I’m considering starting a compost pile in my yard. What are some of the basics I should know before I get started?

A: Utilizing compost is a great method for creating a humusrich garden. You can obtain bagged compost from a local

retailer or you may be able to go to a nearby horse farm and buy manure, but choosing either of these options will result in the material having to be hauled to your garden site. By

making compost at home, however, you can have an endless supply of materials to use whenever needed.

A compost pile can be started at almost any time of the

year, but breakdown may be limited in cooler weather. To

get started, try using kitchen scraps, including coffee grinds

and egg shells. Each season also supplies organic matter that

will break down and add valuable nutrients. Weeds that have not gone to seed are a good addition to compost piles, as are

prunings and grass clippings. In the fall, leaves can be added, but it helps if they are shredded first. Wood ashes from your

www.homeimprovementmag.com

fireplace can be added by sprinkling them lightly over the

entire area. You can even add shredded paper and cardboard. In fact, with all household and landscaping “waste” that can

be added to your pile, it is possible to reduce your household garbage by about 30 percent!

Once you have a well-developed compost system, you’ll continuously have good humus material to add to your

plantings, and you’ll be doing wonders for the environment. For more information on

composting, visit www.gacompost. org or www.gacompost.org.

The owner of this Dunwoody home originally approached the experts at Portis Building & Interiors because she wanted to update the granite countertops in her kitchen. While the design team agreed to install new counters, they also recommended that she update the look of her dated, oak cabinets. She agreed, and the team set to work painting and glazing them, adding trim and new hardware. They also extended the granite top peninsula and added a leg, which now serves as a spot for family members and guests to gather in the kitchen. Pendant lights, a new tile backsplash and a new GE 30-inch slide-in range were added to the kitchen’s fresh, updated look. The space now boasts both high style and functionality—a drastic change from its formerly dark and cramped appearance.
