grilling whatever the catch of the day was at the local market. When we had our first child, though, I had a change of heart. I needed a proper nursery. We scraped together the funds to rent an 800-square-foot bungalow while we tried to sell the boat. (What are the two best days of boat ownership? The day you buy it and the day you sell it, right?) A few years later, our family grew and we needed both a nursery AND room for a toddler. It’s with all this in mind that I wrote our feature story about kids’ rooms, p. 18, that explores ingenious ways to create spaces that function well for kids in cribs to the time they hope to borrow keys to the car. Anyone tired of dingy windows that have popped their seal or won’t raise any more due to too much wear and tear will benefit from a glance at this month’s “Buying Guide: Windows,” p. 39, which sheds light on window-replacement options. The features outlined in our “Buying Guide: Cabinets,” p. 33, would’ve made me swoon back in the day, when I stored my cooking gadgets and utensils in a cabinet the size of a shoebox on our boat. The decision to replace them sounds like a no-brainer—a window is just a piece of glass, right? Wrong. New windows are a chance to add personality to your interior design and curb appeal to your outside architecture, while also dramatically affecting your entire home’s energy efficiency and security.

Frame of Mind If your window frames are in good shape, you might not need to replace the entire window. According to the Consumer Reports Home Window Buying Guide 2016, “You’ll save money on materials and labor by using partial-replacement units when the existing frames and sills are sound and square. They’re also known as pocket replacements and fit into existing frames. Otherwise you’ll need full replacement windows.” Window frames come in all shapes, sizes and materials. If it turns out that you do need to replace an entire window, wooden window frames, though they cost more than any other material, are by far the most popular choice and can easily be customized using stain or paint, both inside and out. Vinyl window frames are the most commonly available and they are the least expensive, allowing homeowners with small budgets to spend a little more to add some optional colors or other design elements. Fiberglass, or composite, frames are strong, maintenance-free and very energy efficient. They are a relatively new addition to the market, meaning there are fewer manufacturers and these frames cost more than vinyl, but usually less than wood.

What a Pane: Efficiency Features Double-glazed windows have a sealed space between two panes of glass that’s filled with air or gas. Gas provides better insulation and is standard on many windows, but the energy savings won’t justify paying more for it. Triple-glazing adds a third layer of glass, which reduces noise significantly. Energy savings are improved, but not enough to justify cost in all but extremely cold climates or where there is a constant and very loud noise (near airports or major freeways). Low-E coating is transparent and improves the efficiency of the glass by reflecting heat. The coating is applied to the outside glass to reflect the sun’s heat or it can be applied to the inside glass to keep heat in. our months after undertaking a complete interior remodel, Emily and J.C. Velez moved into their Morningside home. The dust cleared and the furniture delivered,

their family has happily settled into their newly updated space. They had set their sights on a home in the area for most of the usual reasons—room for the children to expand their horizons, space for a shared home office and entertainment space for time with friends or visitors from out of town.

Emily laughs, “I spent countless hours on Houzz and Pinterest.” She had the help of interior designer Hope Austin of Hope Austin Interiors, for which she says she’s extremely grateful. “Hope found some amazing pieces for us and was a great sounding board for my ideas.” Hope says she enjoyed working with Emily as well, “She’s a person who knows what she wants. It was a great process for me as a designer—she’s very decisive. Her utmost concern was that the house was for her family, so every decision was based on what was family friendly.” “We wanted to keep it simple … to make it look like us,” Emily relates. She and J.C. collect art and showcasing their pieces became an integral part of their design strategy. “We

went with completely white walls downstairs so that each painting would pop off the wall with color. We wanted the house to look fresh and bright, but uncluttered at the same time.”

The heavy black frames anchor the large glass doors that open up the space to the outdoors. Emily doesn’t cover the home’s downstairs windows with traditional window coverings, instead, she prefers to leave them alone, creating a bright, airy feeling in each of the rooms. Upstairs, a new wall divided a large bedroom into two to create the kids’ rooms, a master bedroom and a home office. What is porcelain tile? Porcelain tile is similar to ceramic tile, but is much stronger and harder. Porcelain has a fine sand base (as opposed to a clay base) and is fired at higher temperatures than ceramic. Some porcelains are glazed (the color is only in the glaze coat) while some are through-body, meaning the surface color goes all the way through the body of the tile. The advantage of a through-body porcelain tile is that it will not show chips and scratches as easily as glazed tiles.

What size tile looks best in a kitchen? In a bathroom? Most people are using 18” x 18”s or even larger in kitchens. If you want to make your bathroom seem bigger, a larger tile or a tile installed on the diagonal will accomplish this. How much does it cost to install ceramic tile? A 300-square-foot kitchen should range between $2,600 and $3,600 fully installed. A bathroom floor (based on 150 square feet) runs around $1,200 to $1,600. diybloggersbeat Tripod Planter Get a lift in the plant department with this DIY tripod planter. “In Honor of Design” blogger Anna Liesemeyer was inspired by her friend Justina Blakeney’s book, The New Bohemians, to create this DIY project that spoke to her own eclectic, bohemian-loving heart. This planter works well both indoors and outdoors—if you use a mixture of succulents, as shown here, it will be a breeze to maintain throughout the seasons, requiring very little water and a few hours a day of direct sunshine.

Simple Steps

Spray the inside of the wooden bowl with a weatherproof varnish

to seal it. Drill three holes in the bottom of the bowl in a triangle

pattern. Drill a hole in the center of the bottom to allow water to drain.
