the right fix If It's Broke, You Can Fix It! …Well, Maybe.
I can laugh about it now…
The problem: My dog ran right through my screen door and tore it. How can I fix it myself?
The problem: The fix: Purchase a roll of mesh screen material in the width of your door at a hardware store along with a spline roller (this is very inexpensive and worth every penny). Remove the strip of rubber spline that attaches the screen to the frame and discard the torn screen. Cut a new piece of screen that is at least two inches larger than the doorframe on every side. Lay the new piece of screen over the frame and, use the spline roller to push the spline into the frame’s groove, keeping the screen material flat as you go. When the screen is attached, use a sharp knife to cut away the excess screen on the groove’s edge. And tell Fido to knock next time.
I want to paint my kitchen cabinets, but do I have to sand off the old finish?
The fix: Avoid the sawdust tornado by cleaning the surfaces of your cabinets with a prepaint cleaner instead of sanding. It removes accumulated gunk that coats cabinet doors and frames. To be extra sure that you remove anything that stands between the wood and a new coat of paint, apply a liquid deglosser. Now, you should be ready for a coat of primer and two coats of paint for your kitchen’s new look!
I installed a water softener in my home (which I loved), but didn’t realize that the sodium in softened water is harmful to houseplants. I killed every one of mine before I realized what was happening!
The problem: I love having potted plants on my patio, but hate the stains they leave when water flows through the hole in the bottom.
The fix: There’s a simple solution to this problem that keeps your patio clean and benefits the plant, too. At a plant nursery, ask for “pot feet,” which are made of clay and come in many colors and sizes. Find three (or more if your pot is very large and heavy) to sit under a pot to raise it off the floor about an inch. Buy a clear plastic saucer that’s smaller in diameter than the width of your pot. Slide the saucer under the drainage hole—it’s hidden, and water drains into it and not onto the floor.

taking playtime vertical In Georgia, where tree house worthy trees are everywhere, the fantasy of owning a tree house can become a reality, like it did for this Druid Hills family. This project, though, has a unique spin—the homeowners envisioned a tree house that truly was fun for the whole family. They approached designer and builder Chip Wade, host of HGTV’s “Elbow Room,” to make it a reality. “They wanted to entertain guests in a space people of any age could enjoy,” Chip explains. “In fact, my team scheduled an extra day on set when we were finished so we could play in the tree house, too!” The house has two roofed structures, one serves as the main playhouse for the family’s three young daughters and one houses a zip line for the older crowd. Guardrails were fashioned from reclaimed wood and corrugated acrylic panels. There are multiple entry points to the structure and slides to take you from the third floor down to the main patio. Local carpenter and sculptor Mark Wentz was enlisted to create the details on the whimsical front door. Other materials were purchased from Superior Recreational Products. “A lot of research went into this project,” Chip says. “You have to plan for a tree to continue to grow and for the structure to stay a safe place for kids to play when it does. Preliminary criteria should include finding hardwood trees that are at least 16 inches in diameter, are fairly straight and don't have any signs of disease or decay.”

These Marietta homeowners wanted to upgrade the exterior of their home to downplay the sloping mansard roofline. The design solution was to rebuild the existing dormers and their shutters into new, more visually appealing shapes. The architect also added a large window in the foyer to maximize natural light. The heavy cedar timbers and copper gutters and downspouts add interest to the new covered porch.

This backyard remodel took a very utilitarian balcony and deck to a whole new level. A new stone retaining wall to the side of the house, which is located in Canton, allowed a staircase to transition from the balcony to a garden area and then down to the lower patio. The home’s roofline and balcony were extended to create a screened-in porch, an upper-deck dining area, a covered entertaining space below the balcony and a roomy pool deck.

Getting To Know Your Carpet Enhance Floors outlines the basics of carpeting for everyday homeowners What are the different types of fiber used in carpet today? • Wool is considered the premier fiber in carpet construction, but its price is out of reach for the average consumer. It is soft, has excellent resilience and durability, and is the most environmentally friendly fiber used in carpet manufacturing. • Nylon is the most commonly used fiber for carpet in the industry and is historically regarded as the most durable synthetic fiber. Brand names include Stainmaster, WearDated, and Anso. Nylon offers excellent comfort as well as vibrant colors. Nylons are not inherently stain resistant but they are treated for improved stain resistance. • Triexta, made by DuPont, offers the wear advantages of nylon but is more stain resistant. Triexta, also known as SmartStrand Forever Clean, Sorona, and Silk, offers built-in lifetime stain and soil resistance that does not wash or wear off, and is easy to clean with just water. Many of the softest carpets available today are made of Triexta fiber. • Polyester is considered the “value fiber” and is naturally stain and fade resistant. Polyester styles are good choices for low-to-medium traffic settings such as bedrooms. Thanks to new technology, today’s polyester has been greatly improved from the polyester you may remember from the 1970s. • Olefin, also known as polypropylene, is the most stain-resistant fiber and is primarily available in Berber and commercial carpets. Polyester and olefin tend to be less costly than nylon and Triexta.

Which fiber wears the best? After wool, nylon is traditionally cited as the most durable fiber. Triexta is also proving to perform as well as nylon. More important than the specific fiber is the construction of the carpet. Look for cut-pile carpets that are tightly twisted and dense (fibers very close together). Be aware that no entry-level (“builders grade”) carpet will perform well long term, regardless of fiber content. Which is the most stain resistant? Solution-dyed nylon, Triexta, and solution-dyed polyester fibers can be cleaned very aggressively without damage to the carpet. Some products even offer stain warranties on mustard, bleach, red wine, Kool-Aid, and pet accidents—items that are normally excluded from most warranty coverages. Also, carpets with color flecks help to hide stains and dirt.
