homefront Rebuilding Homes for Haiti Victims The Fuller Center for Housing, a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing ministry in Americus that is dedicated to eliminating poverty housing worldwide, is encouraging churches, organizations, schools and more to sponsor at least one home in Haiti as a part of its plan to establish long-term recovery there. The Fuller Center aims to construct permanent, safe and low-cost structures for families in Haiti. It has partnered with Lazarian World Homes, a nonprofit building organization, to construct one-room earthquake-, fire- and hurricane-resistant homes that can be sponsored for only $3,000. Mammoth New Feature Opens to the Public May 1 The Atlanta Botanical Garden has doubled its size with an amazing second phase known as the Green Expansion. The added features, which premiere May 1, include a canopy walk, new gardens and an outdoor kitchen. The canopy walk allows visitors to walk through Storza Woods (15 acres of woodlands that have not been open to the public in more than 30 years) via a 12-foot-wide suspension bridge that winds through the tops of poplars, hickories and oaks. This area includes an outdoor kitchen and amphitheater with cooking demonstrations and an 8-foot-tall, 55-foot-long herb wall containing more than 2,000 plants. Renée Glover, who serves on the International Board of Directors of Habitat for Renée Glover Humanity, was named the Urban Innovator Award Winner of 2009 by the Manhattan Institute Center for Civic Innovation, an award presented to public officials whose programs show efficient progress in the improvement of quality of life in urban areas. As President and CEO of the Atlanta Housing Authority, Glover has demolished all Atlanta public housing (where crime was 35 percent higher in the rest of the city), replacing it with mixed-use, mixedincome communities. When Glover began, roughly 20 percent of Atlanta public housing residents held jobs; more than 60 percent are employed today. “Renée’s commitment to finding affordable housing solutions is remarkable, and it is wonderful to see her hard work recognized with this award,” says Jonathan Reckford, CEO of Habitat for Humanity International. Why take it outdoors? Rick Kaldrovics, president of Outside Landscape Group, attributes the influx of outdoor kitchens in part to pop-culture television. “With the growing popularity of recent cooking shows and reality restaurant programs, the cooking industry has witnessed extreme growth, and there is a growing demand to stay in the backyard and create gourmet meals for family and friends,” he says. Aside from providing entertainment and leisure, outdoor kitchens can also increase the value of your home. “An outdoor kitchen can differentiate your home from others and make it more attractive and memorable to potential buyers,” says Evan Rogers of the landscape firm Scapes. “Some estimates place the return on investment from 80 to 100 percent or more on a professionally designed and installed outdoor kitchen.”
What to consider before you construct Before you go buying the latest and greatest outdoor appliances, consider whether your backyard can realistically accommodate a kitchen. Rogers says that a variety of landscapes lend themselves to outdoor kitchens but that the best ones are constructed in lush, soothing environments. “Surrounding your kitchen with a beautiful landscape can make for a terrific outdoor cooking and dining experience,” he says. Kaldrovics agrees. “Creating privacy with plants is a desirable landscape consideration,” he says. “Perhaps locating pots that are filled with herbs or planting a small kitchen garden should be considered.” Kaldrovics does warn, however, that the land must be level, compact and well-drained, and patio or

nside a home, the material covering the ground is maintained regularly and withstands average daily wear and tear in a consistent environment—generally the same temperature all day, every day. But outside, the material covering the ground is maintained less often, yet withstands much harsher climactic conditions—from summer’s humid, sunny weather to winter’s freezingcold, wet conditions. Because of the constantly changing climate, homeowners try to choose the most durable materials for their outdoor floors; however, no matter how durable they are, there are steps that need to be taken to maintain and update the aesthetics and strength of patios, porches and decks. Here, we’ve compiled a list of projects that home-improvement experts recommend for the DIY and professional upkeep of and updates for your outdoor floors.
Clean it up and treat it right Pick a nice, warm day this spring to go outside and begin the spruce-up project for your outdoor living areas. First, sweep the surfaces and pick up any debris. Then, do a careful inspection to determine if the winter weather has caused any cracks, loosened boards, etc. After you perform the needed repairs, it’s time for a cleaning. “It is good practice to visually inspect outdoor structures and floors once each year to be assured that the structure remains in safe condition. Cleaning frequency of outdoor floors is directly related to its micro-environment,” says Rick Goldstein, registered architect and co-owner of MOSAIC Group Architects and Remodelers Inc. “In general, if an outdoor floor is in

bright sunlight with no trees overhanging, it will require less maintenance than if it is in constant shade with a full canopy of trees overhead. Shade tends to promote the growth of mildew in the moist Southern climate here in Atlanta.” Whether your outdoor floor requires major or minimal cleaning, it is important to note that different types of surfaces require different cleaning solutions, and using the wrong type of solution may result in damage. For stone surfaces, such as pavers or flagstone, a high-powered pressure wash is recommended. “Make sure these areas are free of algae and a good masonry sealer has been used to protect surfaces from water,” says H. Dale Contant, president of Atlanta Design & Build. “If necessary, a light 20-percent muriatic acid and water solution can be used.” Additional maintenance and in-depth cleaning can be performed as needed—for paver surfaces, refer to the “Peak Paving Performance” sidebar for more information. Wood decks require a different approach. The experts at Thompson’s WaterSeal recommend first testing the deck to determine if it’s time to re-treat/seal it. This test can be done by simply splashing a bit of water on the surface; if the water beads, then the surface doesn’t need immediate added protection and can simply be rinsed with a garden hose for a quick, easy cleaning. If the water absorbs into the wood and darkens it, however, a special cleaning solution is required. A common wood-cleaning solution is made from sodium percarbonate, also known as oxygenated bleach. Oxygenated bleaches are a great choice for cleaning wood, as they are a highly effective solution that won’t harm any nearby plants—or you (they don’t burn the skin). Be sure to rinse your deck after applying any cleaning chemicals. If chemicals are left to dry on the deck, they can resurface over time and break down the wood’s finish. Be sure to apply a waterproofer after your deck treatment is complete. “Lightly wash [your wood deck] each year, and depending on wear and exposure to the elements, re-stain it every 2-3 years,” Goldstein says. “Remember that wood needs to dry out sufficiently prior to the application of a stain or sealer. Otherwise, the stain will not penetrate deeply into the already saturated wood fibers.”

For decks made from composite or vinyl material, cleaning is easier. “Homeowners can simply use soap and water,” says Patti Pellock, senior marketing manager with CertainTeed

foot,” says Warren Gaylord, sales manager of Gulf Synthetics LLC in Suwanee. Another solution could be to apply a polymer coating such as UDF-21, which could bring the cost down to about $5 per square foot and last for 3-5 years. “At the end of 3-5 years, if you decide it could use another coat, roll out one more maintenance coat and the product will take you to 10 years from the date of the initial application,” Gaylord says.

Peak Paving Performance Outside of a standard pressure wash, pavers can require additional cleaning and maintenance to keep them looking and performing their best. Seal it up Applying a sealer to your pavers can do wonders for both their aesthetic appearance and their performance. Sealers are a liquid that is applied over the entire paver surface, then allowed to soak and cure into the joints and surface. It is important to ask your paver source which sealer is best for your surface before performing this maintenance. Often, local hardscape companies can provide this service, taking the guesswork out of a DIY project. Regularly sealing your pavers can reduce the loss of joint sand, prevent weeds and ants from taking over your outdoor floors and keep the color of your pavers looking fresh and vibrant. Settlement issues If your paver base has settled over time, resulting in an uneven surface, it’s best to hire a pro to remove the pavers in the affected area, adjust the settlement as needed, then replace the pavers. The pro can also fix loose or inadequate edge restraints as needed.

Efflorescence When lime is released from within the paver, it appears on the surface of the paver as a white residue; this is called efflorescence. The lime doesn’t damage the paver, and it usually wears away with time, but it can be removed with cleaners specially made for pavers. These cleaners should be used with care, as many contain detergents and diluted acid that can be harmful to surrounding plants. Contact your paver source for more information on which cleaner to use. Stains If your paver has an oil stain, the stain should be treated as soon as possible for the most effective removal—the deeper the stain penetrates, the more difficult it is to remove. First, wipe excess oil from the surface. Next, apply a liquid detergent, allowing it to soak in for several minutes. Then, wash the pavers with hot water. Chaffee, choosing between brick, flagstone or porphyry-granite pavers is a matter of pattern and aesthetic. “Brick achieves herringbone or other patterns in a simple running bond,” he says. “Flagstones are irregularly shaped and offer a more random pattern. And porphyrygranite pavers offer a rich, old-world look in arching or running-bond patterns.” Concrete can also offer the look of stone without the difficulty and price. Corporation. “Many homeowners choose to use a pressurized hose to clean the surface in a timely matter.” However, always take care when using a pressure hose or washer. “DIY deck cleaning using a pressure washer is the No. 1 way most decks are damaged,” Goldstein says. “Wood decking is a soft and relatively delicate material. Using the wrong nozzle or too high of a pressure will damage the wood. It is best to use a wood cleaner with a stiff bristle broom to clean a deck, then hose it off with a garden hose.” Warren Gaylord, sales manager of Gulf Synthetics LLC, agrees. “Oftentimes, both professionals and non-professionals alike think that the closer the water jet is to the surface, the better. This only causes further damage. You don’t actually do this with your car, do you?”
Safety first While evaluating your deck, be sure to examine the substructure. “One test I use the first time I go onto a deck is to jump in place gently in different areas, feeling for excessive bounce or movement,” Gaylord says. “This tells me if the deck is structurally sound.”

In Georgia, sun is a major culprit in deck wear and tear. “Because the support joists are in the shade and out of direct contact with the sun’s damaging rays, they have a much longer lifespan than the deck boards on top of the deck,” Contant says. When inspecting, look for splits, cracks and holes, and test several areas for wood decay. “A tool as simple as a car key can help you determine rot by pressing it against any suspect sections of the lumber. If the key goes slightly or all the way in like an ignition, watch out,” Gaylord says. Another item on your inspection checklist should be the fasteners—nails, screws or anchor bolts. “Nails will eventually raise up on their own, commonly referred to as ‘popping up,’” says Jeff Butler with RainAway Deck Drain Systems. “A good screw will support the board better and longer without popping up.” He recommends removing nails and replacing them with a quality deck screw, such as the ones made by DeckMate. How to prevent pesky garden pests By Blair Branch and Sarah E. King
T
here is nothing more rewarding for a homeowner than staring at a perfectly manicured lawn and garden, courtesy of a green thumb and a little elbow grease. But homeowners know all too well that their landscaping masterpieces can turn into a playground for
pests without the proper steps to control those critters. And no one knows pest control better than Amanda Campbell, manager of display gardens at the Atlanta Botanical Garden. According to her, Georgians have to deal with a variety of insects and critters on a seasonal basis, and year-round maintenance is crucial. But fret not, homeowners. Even the peskiest of pests can be controlled—most with inexpensive, DIY solutions. Following are a few of the most common garden invaders, along with ways to eliminate them.
Japanese Beetles With no natural enemies locally, Japanese Beetles can destroy a homeowner’s prized plants if not addressed. According to Campbell, their grubs (larvae) attack lawns in the root zone, and the adult beetles love feasting on roses. Campbell and her team simply pick the beetles off of plants and throw them in a bucket of soapy water. 54

Though one solution to the problem—pheromone traps—are highly popularized right now, Campbell isn’t sold. “Since they emit a chemical attractive to the beetles, you may be inviting more than you originally had. If this is the preferred method, place the trap a little outside of the garden zone just in case,” she says.
Aphids These soft-bodied arachnids love to hide on the underside of leaves and petals, and suck out the plant’s juices. They eat a variety of plants, including prized pansies. Aphids can be easily controlled with sprays, but Campbell recommends using horticultural sprays, as opposed to those that consist of household oils and soaps, to ensure that the viscosity of the formula is correct and doesn’t harm the plant. Carol Simpson, owner of Ashe-Simpson Garden Center, suggests using All-Season Horticultural Oil, a petroleum oil-based product, on aphids and other insects. The spray is not harmful to humans. “The product smothers the insect,” Simpson says. “Locations like the Disney parks use this product on their plants because it is safe for children. The last thing they want is for a child to get sick if they place a leaf in their mouth.” If left untreated, aphid populations can grow into a mighty menace, potentially deforming, weakening and stunting plant growth.

Greening Your Garden Pete LaQuaglia started his natural pest-control company, Greenhouse Pest Management, three years ago when his oldest son had a severe asthma attack due to pesticides a company used to treat the family home. He vowed to look to natural alternatives using integrated pest-management principles to control pest problems. “We seek to understand the biology and habits of pests and treat the issues properly,” he says. “We use what nature uses to defend itself from pests.”
Voles These tiny rodents can wreak havoc on a lawn, as their underground burrowing significantly disturbs roots and can prevent growth. Campbell recommends discouraging voles from the area with items most homeowners already have lying around. “Cayenne pepper, garlic, chewed bubblegum, mothballs or strongly scented soap shavings repeatedly sprinkled down their holes—individually, not all at the same time—are often offensive enough to convince them to move,” she says. If the little varmints persist, though, Campbell notes that “A good old yard cat will definitely decrease the vole population.”
Mealy bug Feeding on gardenias, orchids, ferns and even cacti, these soft-bodied bugs appear on plants as small, white blobs covered by a waxy fluff. They attach themselves to the stems of plants, drain their juices and can ruin plants or stunt their growth if a large population is left untreated. Pete LaQuaglia, owner of Greenhouse Pest Management, a natural pest-management company dedicated to using organic products for pest control, says over watering and standing water are the most common causes of a mealy bug infestation. “Limited watering and correcting the water flow in a garden is the easiest way to eliminate a mealy bug issue. This is also true for slugs,” LaQuaglia says. “A supplemental food for organic feeders like mealy bugs [can also be placed] in the garden. This product contains orthoboric acid marinated in a cornbased granule and acts as a second food source for insects, moving them off your plants.” Editorial Resources begin on page 85.
LaQuaglia says many garden pest issues are caused by overfertilized gardens and gardens that are not kept clean. “Using products like Miracle Grow adds extra nutrients to the soil, making them 900 times more fertilized than crop lands,” he says. “The majority of bugs in the garden are organic feeding, so using fewer synthetic products and cleaning up dead foliage will help eliminate harboring areas.” If this doesn’t work, LaQuaglia suggests giving an expert a call. Licensed products that Greenhouse Pest Management uses include: • Garlic, spearmint and peppermint barriers. These products create a barrier that is unappealing to all types of pests. “Being natural products, they will break down in a few weeks. And the peppermint makes your garden smell good.” • Granule bate. This mix of corn meal supplies organic eaters with another food source that is “more appealing than your plants.” • Products made from flowers and oranges are used to address current infestations. “Oranges produce oil called limonene, which works great as a contact killer and a repellent for pests.”

Simple Tips to Protect Your Garden This Summer Deborah Harrison, owner and manager of Habersham Gardens, knows a thing or two about keeping your garden pest-free and beautiful. Habersham, a full-service landscape, maintenance and irrigation company founded in 1978, has won numerous awards over its 32-year reign, including 2009’s Best Intown Garden Center. Here are Harrison’s five tips on how to keep your garden free from pests this summer. 1. Plant yucky-tasting perennials: “Some plants are naturally distasteful to deer and rabbits,� Harrison says. “Luckily, these include some of the most beautiful perennials.� To deter deer, plant astilbe, lavender, Shasta daisy, coneflower and ferns. To ward off rabbits, Harrison suggests planting Blackeyed Susan, lambs ear and butterfly bush. 2. Deter voles: “A good amount of Perma-Til can be worked into the soil around a vole’s intended meal, like your hostas and roses,� she says. “Voles despise the feeling of this product and will avoid the area.� 3. Fight nature with nature: Purchase and release ladybugs and praying mantis larvae to control aphid, scale, whitefly and other insect populations. Use a Venus Flytrap to feed on small flying or crawling insects. “Plus, the kids will love watching [the flytrap] catch and consume their prey,� Harrison says. 4. Nematodes to the rescue: “They can be introduced to target specific problems, including outdoor flea infestations, termites, grubs, beetles and more,� Harrison says. “Nematodes work underground, killing their prey before it hatches.� 5. Stop the spread: Harrison suggests sprinkling Diatomaceous Earth outdoors to assist in killing many crawling or leaping insects, such as fleas and lice.

When Ants Attack Though not usually a pest to plants, for both people and pets, ants are all-around annoying. Amanda Campbell of the Atlanta Botanical Garden says that if ants are left untreated, they may build their mounds around the crowns of plants, which is detrimental because plants cannot survive with soil piled high around their stems. While some ant remedies come from the kitchen (such as grits and club soda), Campbell recommends sticking with the ant baits that are sold at most hardware stores.

It will cost you more money up front, but by having a plan, you will save money in the long run by reducing mistakes.”

Natural Stone Natural stone is beginning to find its place in more residential projects. “Natural stone is the perfect material to establish a hierarchy in your pedestrian circulation,” says Travis G. Brooks, member of the ASLA and owner of Brooks Landscaping Architecture. “The stones allow for varying path width, and very informal connections can be used as individual stepping stones separated by mulch or lawn.” 64

Despite the versatility, timeless elegance and durability wood offers, many homeowners are apprehensive regarding the use and care. Here are reasons why you should consider a wood countertop, as well as some design ideas. Sanitary Concerns Fear of salmonella has consistently been the first concern my clients have. For years, we have been told that plastic is less absorbent and, thus, safer for cutting meats, especially poultry. In my research, I found just the opposite from a study that dates back to 1993! Researchers at The University of Wisconsin first began with the intention of finding a convenient way to sanitize wood cutting boards and tops to “make them as safe as plastic.” Their studies took a much different direction as findings revealed that wooden cutting boards actually kill bacteria that survive well on plastic. The fact is that any top that is not cleaned or disinfected after use will attract bacterial growth. Cleaning and care For daily cleanup, use a warm washcloth with mild dish soap. If I am cutting meats, I will also use 1-part bleach to 10-parts water solution for additional sanitization. The key to keeping daily cleanup easy is to properly seal the wood, and all you need is a cloth rag and mineral oil; there is no need to buy expensive wood countertop sealers. Instead, visit the pharmacy section at your favorite store for a regular bottle of mineral oil. If the countertop is new or you are unaware when it was last sealed, follow this timeline: oil it once a day for a week, once a week for a month, and once a month forever. And while this may sound tedious, the application is simple. Just apply the oil in a thick, yet even, coat over the entire surface. Within 24-36 hours, the oil will absorb into the wood, offering a superior stain and germ repellant. Keep in mind that the more you use the surface, the more often it will need to be sealed, especially during the dry winter months. If you begin to see white areas, which means the wood is drying out and raising in search of moisture, it is time to seal again. Design matters Wood countertops have such an incredible presence in a room, quite simply because they give a genuine sense of balance to nearly any space. Wood is warm and relaxing, it tempers the starkness of white palettes and it offers a universal appeal to any decor. The most popular species used today are walnut, maple and cherry, but exotics such as zebrawood, tiger wood, African Iroko and African mahogany are just a few other favorites. In choosing wood for your spaces, give careful consideration not only to the style and decor of the area, but also how you plan to use the surface. The construction method (how the top is milled together), the finish and the thickness all define the style further, and offer different degrees of durability. 66

I use bold color in nearly every space I create. For a client who is hesitant to use red on walls or full furniture pieces, for example, I spray-painted flea market farmhouse pendants fire-engine red and updated Danish modern chairs with red vinyl cushions. I also suggested keeping the walls in muted tones to allow accent colors to stand out. The intensity of the red is a great contrast to the toned-down blue-grey on the walls. This pairing of muted and bold creates the perfect balance.
Too shy to go bold inside? I always suggests first testing bold colors on outdoor spaces. This outdoor family room was given new life with orange draperies and a portion of the deck that was painted orange to resemble an area rug. Plastic tiki stools also offer a striking pop of color throughout the space. If you find you are not comfortable bringing bright colors indoors, get your daily color fix outside with your morning cup of coffee!

Go Grey! Neutral colors no longer mean beige or cream; many shades of grey work beautifully as neutrals. My favorite grey tone is charcoal—which, just like brown and black, works well with virtually every color. In this bedroom, I stuck with shades of dark grey, then used a red-orange side table and rich, velvet throw pillow to create color that pops. If the clients who sleep here get tired of the red-orange, they can simply change out the pillow or paint the side table a different color. No major redecorating necessary!

Waterproof door installation is one area where manufacturer installation guidelines may not give all the details required. In the process of explaining plumb, square and level procedures, weatherproofing precautions are sometimes given little coverage. The assumption might be that such details have already been covered, but knowing a few weatherproofing “must dos” will help ensure you get the best out of your builder or renovator. The weatherproofing process begins after framing and sheathing but before siding installation. House wrap products may be generally helpful for draft protection, but at door and window openings, additional perimeter soft flashing is required. Asphalt-impregnated roofing paper was once the standard in this application, but modern, flexible peel-and-stick moisture barrier tape yields an even better result. The idea is to prevent moisture from penetrating the structure by directing it away from the interior and providing a course of least resistance to the exterior. In perimeter tape-flashing, the base strip is applied first; the sides overlap this strip, and the top section overlaps the sides, providing a continuous water barrier. The second level of water protection occurs before threshold installation. A threshold pan (metal flashing, this time) is a catch pan with a broad base extending the width of the door opening and a raised lip running along its interior width. This flashing is set in top-quality caulking— look for a 50-year guarantee. It is designed to stop water that might be driven under the threshold from penetrating the wood structure, or to direct water that has made its 70

way through the weep-holes of an interlocking threshold toward the exterior. A third barrier to water infiltration is established by applying long-lasting caulk to the interior surface of the door frame’s sides and header. If a threshold pan is not used, caulk should also be liberally applied to the base of the threshold. The benefit in doing so is extended caulk longevity due to protection from UV damage by the door frame. Caulk applied at the exterior seam between the frame and structure is exposed to UV light. A fourth barrier is the use of metal flashing above the door header trim. The flashing extends the width of the door opening or beyond. The upper flange of the flashing lies against the width of the moisture barrier tape above the door opening. An “L” ledge extends over the depth of the door trim for its full width, and a slight downward angle of the flashing edge both prevents water from getting under the flashing and directs runoff toward the exterior. In wood or vinyl siding homes, the siding forms a counter flashing. That is, the siding is another overlapping “scale” in the door’s water armor.

It’s official—spring has arrived in Atlanta! May is a month of celebrations: Mother’s Day, graduations and the beginning of the wedding season. The weather this month is absolutely perfect for outdoor events, as we have low humidity and no mosquitoes just yet. Here are some tips for keeping your garden healthy this month to enjoy during all of your outdoor time. Garden Maintenance
➤ Be on the lookout for poison ivy. As new leaves appear, spray with herbicide as soon as possible to keep the plant from spreading.
➤ Petunias, salvia and many other annual flowers will bloom beautifully with a few timely pinches: pinch to 3-4 inches above the ground at planting time and again the first or second week of July.
➤ Shiny trails on the petals and leaves of your ornamentals are a sign of slugs. Eliminate them by placing grapefruit rind halves among your plants. Position the rinds with the peel side up.
➤ Avoid blossom end rot (round, sunken, water-soaked spots on the bottom)

Giving Back to Our Soldiers
Based in Taunton, Mass., Homes for Our Troops provides specially adapted homes to severely injured veterans who have returned from Iraq and Afghanistan. It was founded in 2004 by John Gonsalves and has since provided more than 50 homes to families. The state of Georgia has four homes that are considered “mission accomplished,” meaning the veteran and his family now reside in that house. Veterans who have received homes are PO3 Jeffrey E. Blackman of Kingsland; HM3 (Navy Corpsman) Joe Dan “Doc” Worley of Douglasville; SGT SGT Darryl Wallace and family Darryl Wallas of Harlem; and CPL Joshua Lindsey of Cumming. The average cost of each home is about $330,000 and is presented at no cost to the veterans, thanks to donations from corporate sponsors, professional tradespeople, foundation grants and community-minded volunteers. Because of the constantly changing climate, homeowners try to choose the most durable materials for their outdoor floors; however, no matter how durable they are, there are steps that need to be taken to maintain and update the aesthetics and strength of patios, porches and decks. Clean it up and treat it right Pick a nice, warm day this spring to go outside and begin the spruce-up project for your outdoor living areas. First, sweep the surfaces and pick up any debris. Then, do a careful inspection to determine if the winter weather has caused any cracks, loosened boards, etc. After you perform the needed repairs, it’s time for a cleaning. “It is good practice to visually inspect outdoor structures and floors once each year to be assured that the structure remains in safe condition. here is nothing more rewarding for a homeowner than staring at a perfectly manicured lawn and garden, courtesy of a green thumb and a little elbow grease. But homeowners know all too well that their landscaping masterpieces can turn into a playground for
pests without the proper steps to control those critters.
And no one knows pest control better than Amanda Campbell, manager of display gardens at the Atlanta Botanical Garden. According to her, Georgians have to deal with a variety of insects and critters on a seasonal basis, and year-round maintenance is crucial. But fret not, homeowners.
Even the peskiest of pests can be controlled—most with inexpensive, DIY solutions. Following are a few of the most common garden invaders, along with ways to eliminate them.
Japanese Beetles
With no natural enemies locally, Japanese Beetles can destroy a homeowner’s prized plants if
not addressed. According to Campbell, their grubs (larvae) attack lawns in the root zone, and the adult beetles love feasting on roses. Campbell and her team simply pick the beetles off of plants and throw them in a bucket of soapy water.
