Great prices, exceptional value, spaces to live and love in!

We knew we needed to have our kitchen remodeled—it was long overdue—however, we wanted a fabulous, AFFORDABLE, new kitchen. We were told that our expectations were unrealistic because we did not want to compromise quality to get the job to fit our price range, that is, until we met Bernie of Cabinet Cafe. We not only got the price we wanted, less than $10,000, we also received products with exceptional quality and excellent customer service. —Brenda & Joe

prep, we’ve researched all of the latest and greatest pool and spa enhancements in this issue’s special section. Advancements have come so far that owners can now customize their pools and spas with light displays, automated monitoring equipment, resistance units to create currents and more. Natural swimming pools—which are completely void of chemicals but still maintain safe, sanitary conditions—are even available for eco-conscious homeowners. If you don’t have an at-home pool or spa, consider making some enhancements in your garden this month. Locally grown produce is a rising trend in Atlanta, so if you’re looking to get in on the action, check out page 59 for eight helpful tips to help you get your own edible garden growing. Who would’ve thought that blueberries, figs, soybeans and a host of other fruits, veggies and herbs can all be grown right in your own backyard? Take a shot at planting an edible garden this spring, and be sure to send us photos of what your yard yields. Finally, don’t forget to check out the 33rd Annual Spring Atlanta Home Show April 1-3 at the Cobb Galleria Centre. We’ve included a comprehensive guide to the show, starting on page 39, that details all 350 exhibitors, show schedules and more. We hope to see you there!

Need-to-Know Info! Most homeowners don’t know that a broken light bulb can pose more danger than simply leaving behind broken glass. If a compact fluorescent light bulb (CFL) or fluorescent tube light bulb breaks in your home, it releases mercury vapor, which will continue to permeate your home until it is cleaned. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recommends the following steps to reduce mercury vapor from a broken bulb: 1. Have people and pets leave the room. 2. Air out the room for 510 minutes by opening a window or door to the outdoor environment. 3. Shut off the central forced air-heating/air-conditioning system if you have one. 4. Be thorough in collecting broken glass and visible powder. 5. Place cleanup materials in a sealable container. 6. Promptly place all bulb debris and cleanup materials outdoors in a trash container or protected area until materials can be disposed of properly. Avoid leaving any bulb fragments or cleanup materials indoors. 7. For several hours, continue to air out the room where the bulb was broken and leave the H&AC system shut off. For more comprehensive cleanup instructions, visit www. epa.gov/cfl/cflcleanup.html. Information courtesy of www.epa.gov.

Pave Way for Brock For the first time ever, Brock Paver Base is now available for direct purchase by homeowners and contractors and is sold exclusively in Georgia at Stone Forrest Materials in Kennesaw. The product is a base replacement system that has generated quite a buzz in recent years Photo courtesy of Brock Paver Base for its ability to replace up to five inches of base when installing brick or concrete pavers. Made from “Class 5” Polypropylene, the Brock Paver Base has an indefinite lifecycle, which means it won’t be taking up space in landfills. Visit www.brockpaverbase. com for more information.

National Retailer Expands to Atlanta The Tile Shop, a national retailer of natural stone, ceramic and porcelain tiles, recently opened its first Georgia location at 162 Ernest Barrett Parkway in Marietta. With more than 28,000 square feet of showroom space, the store targets Atlanta-area do-it-yourselfers who are seeking a vast selection of tile for flooring, walls, mosaic projects and more. The Tile Shop was founded 25 years ago and has plans of expanding to 100 nationwide stores in the near future. For more information, visit www.tileshop.com.

There’s a New Doctor in Town If you’re starting to get fired up about outdoor grilling, be sure your grill gets a thorough cleaning before it’s fired up! To help take care of that mess and stress, Atlanta-area resident Jeff Thomson began his own company, the BBQ Grill Dr., which offers at-home services to clean grills for healthier, safer cooking. Thomson and his team deep-clean every part of a grill in their specially equipped trailers—which will travel anywhere in the metro Atlanta area—removing all traces of grease, fat and carbon deposits. Not only does this special cleanse rid grills of harmful carcinogens, but it keeps them looking great and lasting longer. Visit www.bbqgrilldr.com for more information. Oasis! An

The newest trends in pool and spa enhancements By Kathy Kidwell and Shelby Stevens

T

he air is warm, and the sun is hot on your skin. You’re inclined to take a dip in the pool to cool off and enjoy the weather, but first you have to vacuum the bottom and skim the water’s surface, after which you’ll probably spend only an hour at most in the pool, because just floating around will get boring after a while. That’s a lot of work for only an hour’s enjoyment.

If you feel like your pool has become just a high-maintenance concrete hole, now’s the time to look into enhancements that will ensure a summer full of fun in the sun. With the number of advancements in pool and spa amenities available today, you can turn your boring old pool and hot tub into a backyard retreat fit for a “staycation” resort.

Lessen the Workload The more a homeowner wants to enjoy the pool with less hands-on manual work, the more automated the system he should choose. Instead of walking outside in the cold or at night, a homeowner can schedule lights in the pool and landscape to turn on and off automatically. —Elizabeth Lusk, manager of Lusk Pools in Canton

Au Naturale If you’re tired of chemical treatments, constant cleaning, green-tinted hair and faded swimsuits that your pool brings, look into natural swimming pools (NSPs). Also known as natural swimming ponds, NSPs have been all the rage in Europe over the past 20 years, with more than 20,000 installations throughout the continent, according to BioNova Natural Pools, a worldwide network of NSP installers/dealers. Using European technologies and techniques, NSPs installed by a BioNova partner don’t use any chemicals. In addition to their lack of chlorine, bromine and biguanide, BioNova NSPs also don’t use any devices, such as UV sterilizers, ozone, ionizers or salt systems. “A NSP is a body of water constructed usually of two compartments—one for swimming, one for filtration,” says Greg Randolph, president and CEO of CSD Pools in Powder Springs. “The filtration side houses plant and animal life with a bed of gravel. The water is pulled through the gravel, creating circulation using plant and animal life to eat bacteria, algae and fungus. The pool is filled from rain, as it has no chemicals in it. Its appearance is that of a pond with light green water that is full of plants and aquatic life.”

Surfacing Trends When it comes to deciding on your pool’s surfacing material, “Any aggregate finish out there is beneficial because if you don’t use one, you’re just putting regular plaster down and that is basically just a thin set cement,” says Vince Blasczyk, senior sales associate at Brown’s Pools and Spas in Atlanta. “Chemicals, UV sunlight and more can deteriorate that finish rather quickly. If you have an aggregate finish, it helps hold the material together and protect the surface. Any time you have an aggregate in your coat, it’s going to last longer.” www.atlantahomeimprovement.com

0411_024-037_Pools & SpasSS.indd27 27

Greg Randolph, president and CEO of CSD Pools in Powder Springs, says the following pros and cons on some of the top surfacing materials can help homeowners make their selections. Pebble: There are many choices, it doesn’t stain easily and most carry a 15-year warranty. Cons? It can be pricey and rough to some people. Quartz: The color choices are limitless, it is very strong and durable, and most quartz surfaces come with a 5- to 7-year warranty.

Cons? This, too, can be pricey and very rough if not properly cared for. White marble: This is the most common and least expensive of all the choices, and when it’s new, it’s the smoothest. Cons? It is susceptible to staining and etching if it is not properly cared for, and it usually only carries a 1- to 2-year warranty. Tile: This is by far the most expensive material, but if properly installed, it should last the longest. Most tile choices today are glass mosaics, and the options are vast. SPECIAL SECTION: POOLS AND SPAS To boot, NSPs offer a variety of designs, ranging from looking like natural ponds to your average rectangular swimming pool. Also, you don’t have to install an all-new pool to have a NSP—you can convert your current pool by hiring a BioNova partner (find one online at www.bionovanaturalpools.com) to construct a regeneration zone. The zone will be equal to the size of your existing pool with varying depth, and will be filled with aquatic plants. The professional then will modify your pool’s plumbing to achieve the biological filtration of your pool water. Another option in natural pools is a moss-based system, such as Creative Water Solutions’ (CWS) PoolNaturally and SpaNaturally systems. Using a species of sphagnum moss to condition and treat water, the CWS systems are designed to easily tap into new or existing pools or spas, either above ground or in-ground. Simply install the system dispenser (a DIY installation that can be done in a few hours by carefully following CWS instructions, available online at www.cwsnaturally.com), then replace moss refills and perform standard water testing each month. ”According to scientists, using this style of filter limits the need for chlorine,” Randolph says. It also limits the amount of algaecide and chemicals that your pool needs by as much as 80 percent.

Watch out for Wildlife! While a natural swimming pool is an eco-friendly addition to your yard, it often attracts unwanted wildlife, so be aware before you take a dip. “In a natural environment like that you get water snakes,” says Curt Cooper, owner of Avalon Pools in Holly Springs. “You’re creating an environment for the possibility of snakes and frogs and building [a space] for wildlife—water moccasins in particular.” www.atlantahomeimprovement.com

SPECIAL SECTION: POOLS AND SPAS “Based on years of research and pilot projects studying biofilm—the real culprit in any water environment—we found the moss significantly reduces chemical costs and irritating side effects like burning eyes, dry scalp and wear and tear on swimwear and pool and spa equipment,” says Gina Chavez, COO of Creative Water Solutions. “Plus, the system offers less maintenance time, and it’s totally biodegradable after usage.”

Hi-tech automation With the latest advancements in technology through cell phone applications, home automation and more, there are new and exciting options to monitor, maintain and even soup up your pool and spa. “There are many options available on the market for monitoring pools and spas,” says Elizabeth Lusk, manager of Lusk Pools in Canton. “From electronic chemical feeders, which automatically dispense chemicals to balance water on an as-needed basis, to wireless remote controls for accessing pool controls from within the house, there are products designed for every budget. The newest breakthroughs in pool controls also allow easy access to pool controls through technical instruments such as iPhones, Smartphones and iPads.”

SPECIAL SECTION: POOLS AND SPAS Before looking into these options, Lou Downes, president of Downes Swimming Pool Co. Inc. and member of the Association of Pool and Spa Professionals (APSP), offers the following words of advice to help you maximize your budget: “Have a very good understanding of how you and your family will use the pool/spa, then let the functions drive the design.” Among the features available, Downes and Jamison Ori, president of Rosebrook Pools and member of the APSP, recommend considering: • Automated monitoring equipment, which allows you to monitor and make changes to your pool system and equipment through the Internet and even cell phone applications • Resistance units, which create a current in your pool to allow for resistance swimming • Automatic covers operating on parallel tracks to keep your pool and spa warm and safe • Variable-speed pumps, which lower energy costs • LED lighting • Interior socializing spaces in the pool, such as benches, tanning ledges, grottos and shaded areas

Fence it in Each year nationwide, more than 350 children younger than 5 years old drown in residential swimming pools, and another 2,600 are injured, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (USCPSC). These accidents usually occur in pools that don’t have proper fencing. The American Fence Association offers the following five steps to ensure that the fence around your swimming pool offers the maximum safety protection: STEP 1: Use a self-closing and selflatching gate. The gate’s latch should be out of a child’s reach—more than 54 inches from the ground or on the side of the gate facing the pool—and at least 3 inches www.atlantahomeimprovement.com

0411_024-037_Pools & SpasSS.indd33 33

below the top of the gate to prevent a child from reaching over the top of the gate and releasing the latch. Also, the gate should have no opening greater than a half-inch wide within 18 inches of the latch release, to prevent a young child from reaching through the gate to release the latch. STEP 2: Restrict access through and over the fence opening. Chain-link fences should have a mesh size that does not exceed 1.25 inches, and should not have an opening larger than 1.75 inches. Picket fences should have spacing less than 4 inches between pickets, and should have at least 45 inches between horizontal supports on the outside of the fence. If the supports have to be less

than 45 inches apart, place them on the inside of the fence (facing the pool). STEP 3: Be sure the fence is tall enough. The USCPSC recommends that pool fencing be at least 48 inches high. STEP 4: Surround the entire pool area. Just fencing off the yard doesn’t prevent access to the pool. Four-sided fencing that isolates the pool from the house decreases the number of pool immersion injuries among children by more than 50 percent. STEP 5: Hire a professional fence contractor. With so much at stake, only a trained professional fence contractor should be used to install fencing around a pool. ATLANTA HOME IMPROVEMENT APRIL 2011

Trends in Automation

out in the evening,” says Vince Blasczyk,

One of the latest trends we’re seeing with pool and spa automation is homeowners demanding “Smart Home” technology for their pool and spa functions. Smart Home technology relies on a computer-based, centralized network that runs all of your homes’ functions from one command center. Homeowners want this control system to extend out to their pool and spa functions so they can control lighting, waterfalls, filtration, pumps, spa jets, music and temperature settings from one controller within their home.

senior sales associate at Brown’s Pools

—Doug Bork, landscape architect/project director, Outside Landscape Group

Another popular, and relatively simple trend, is to install LED lighting. “It really gives off a wow factor when people come

and Spas. He says that some systems even have a “light show” function that will create a strobe-like effect. One particular system is for the July Fourth holiday and switches between red, white and blue lights. Whether your pool or spa project is large or small, you should get a professional involved from the start, ensuring your project is well designed and engineered. With all of these great new options in swimming pool enhancements, there’s no reason to spend more time maintaining your pool than enjoying it.

Is Your Air Conditioning System Ready for Summer? When winter ends and the temperature begins to rise, many people begin the annual ritual of spring cleaning. Dusting away winter cobwebs and cleaning the insides of windowsills are usually performed to keep the home in good condition. But many people overlook the maintenance on one household item that is relied on all summer long: the air conditioner. You should make sure your air conditioner is in proper working condition before the summer hits, just as you would make sure your furnace is in proper working condition before winter. Your HVAC system as a whole functions to keep you and your family comfortable, so an inspection by a professional HVAC contractor should be done at least once a year. Before the summer, however, you should check over your air conditioning unit to identify any potential problems. By far, the most important maintenance task you can perform is changing the air filters on a regular basis. Failing to replace the air filters once per month (depending on the type of air filter) is a mistake that could cost you a lot of money in energy bills and will significantly reduce the lifespan of the entire system. Make sure you purchase air filters that allow for proper airflow and are recommended by the HVAC system manufacturer. A better choice of filter would be a MERV 10 or MERV 16 media air cleaner by Healthy Climate, which is usually changed yearly based on pressure drop across the filter. Another thing you can do before you turn your air conditioning unit on for the summer is clean your registers and air returns. Make sure the vents and registers are free of dust and opened properly

WOW! 0% Interest. Everyone APPROVED. No Credit Check! on major repairs and accessories

to allow clean air to enter and exit the cooling system. Also, check the sealing around the duct work, as you can lose a lot of cool air through unsealed duct work, which will raise your cooling costs. You may want to inspect the evaporator coil for dirt and dust. There are special cleaners available that are designed for use on these coils. However, this may not be an easy task, and accessing the evaporator coil may be difficult. You may want to contact a professional HVAC contractor to perform this maintenance, as certain lines may need to be cut and reinstalled for proper cleaning and use. Your outdoor air conditioning unit should be free from debris. Remove leaves and overgrowth around your outdoor unit to ensure it has enough space to maintain proper airflow. Try to keep water away from the unit, as this can cause premature rusting and corrosion. A licensed HVAC contractor can clean and inspect the inside of the system for any signs of potential problems and make sure it is ready for summer, as well as check the refrigerant levels to ensure there is enough to keep your house cool all season long. Taking these steps to clean and maintain your air conditioning system will ensure that it lasts a long time and runs at its rated efficiency. You’ll save money in the long run, and your family will stay cool and comfortable during those hot summer days. For more information on how to keep your comfort system running efficiently, contact Premier Indoor Comfort Systems at 770-3459707, E-mail customerservice@premierindoor.com or visit us at www.premierindoor.com.

Survey Says …

According to a survey by Better Homes and Gardens: • 78 percent of households are eating more fresh vegetables and/or fruits • 49 percent of women plan to grow their own fruits and/or vegetables this year • 71 percent of households will likely use fresh herbs in their food this year

2. Practice companion planting. Contrary to what many beginner gardeners

believe, most edible plants can grow together in the same bed. “Combining

Nearly any type of container that can hold soil is suitable to use for container gardening, as long as it has a hole on the bottom for water drainage. So get creative with your containers and add a little flair to your outdoor area. Some suggestions include wash bins, colanders (perfect for herbs), wheelbarrows, an antique claw-foot bathtub … the options are limitless.

plants that grow well together saves space, improves harvest and can be attractive,” Robertson says. Companion planting also offers shade and protection for other plants. For example, lettuce, onion, beets and spinach grow well in the shade of corn and beans. Planting a variety of vegetables together also reduces the risk of complete crop infestation. “The more veggies you put together, the better,” Dudley says. “If you get a pest, it’s more difficult for them to decimate the crop; this is a concept is called ‘security through diversity.’” 3. Consider containers. If you think living in a condo, apartment or town home will put a damper on your gardening endeavors, think again. Containers are perfect options for areas that are short on ground space. “Edible container growing is something I highly suggest,” says Amy Borden of Simply Flowers Inc. “Tomatoes, peppers, herbs, some edible shrubs (such as blueberries) and even small trees (such as figs) are great options for container

gardening.” Borden also recommends that new gardeners try container

Colleen Dudley, senior horticulturist at the Atlanta Botanical Garden, suggests planting perennials in an area of your garden that is separate from annuals. “The perennials stay in the ground all year,” she says, “and you don’t want to frequently put other plants by them because you’ll disturb their root systems.”

planting to test out their skills. “This way you don’t spend a whole lot of money on something you’re not sure about,” she says. However, Dudley warns that container gardening can be more high maintenance than some expect. “The main thing people have to realize is that they’re solely responsible for supplying all of the water and nutrients to the plant since it’s not in the ground,” she says. “The bigger the pot the better so the root system can grow. I suggest using dwarf varieties of vegetables.” Robertson adds that plants with running and climbing vines should be avoided unless a wall or trellis is nearby for support. 4. Wait until the time is right. You may be eager to hit the ground running with your edible garden, but pull in the reigns—at least until mid April. Atlanta’s

Expert Tip

fluctuating temperatures can be deceptive, and you don’t want to begin your garden on a warm-weather weekend only to have it freeze over the next. The

Growing your own garden is easier on your wallet. Once you see how much you can get off one plant, and you compare it to how much is charged at the store, you will understand. It is pretty significant! —Amy Borden, Simply Flowers Inc.

general rule of thumb is to wait until after April 15. If you’re unsure when to plant a particular fruit, herb or vegetable, Borden recommends visiting the store to see what’s available. If it’s in stock, it’s usually safe to start growing. 5. Plant natural repellants. When it comes to repelling pests the natural way, keep one rule in mind: smellier is better. “Insects have a very heightened sense of smell, so any kind of stinky plant generally deters them,” Dudley says. She suggests planting strong-scented vegetables such as onions, radish and garlic, and potent herbs, including rosemary, marigold, chives and oregano.

Get your garden growing with the following plants, all of which thrive in Atlanta’s spring and summer climate.

If you’re planning to grow tomatoes, Robertson suggests planting dill alongside them to deter the hornworm. If you’re planting cabbage, place some thyme nearby to repel cabbage moths. Like Dudley, Robertson advocates planting marigolds. “They’re the classic favorite for protection from harmful insects and add brilliant color to the garden.” 6. Set a schedule. We’ve all heard the adage, “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail,” and it’s certainly no exception when gardening is involved. Establishing a schedule of watering, pruning and harvesting will set your garden up for maximum success. “No matter which [edible varieties] you plant, they all need about an inch of water per week,” Dudley says. Plants will also need to be mulched, fertilized twice each month and harvested regularly. “The more you harvest, the more your plants will produce,” Dudley says. 7. Give your garden a theme. Planting an edible garden can be even more fun if you give it a theme based on your favorite foods. “Plant according to the foods you love,” Borden says. “For example, if you love cooking Mexican food, try doing a salsa garden and plant tomatoes, cilantro, onions and jalapenos. Look at the ingredients of your favorite meals and check off the ones that you can grow yourself. This works well in containers, too.” As another option, Dudley suggests a pizza garden containing tomatoes, eggplant, rosemary and oregano, or creating striped, spotted or rainbow gardens with different colored plants. “It’s a great way to get kids involved,” she says. 8. Enhance your landscape. While the primary purpose of your edible garden is to yield yummy fruits, vegetables and herbs, it can also be an aesthetically appealing addition to your landscape. Blueberry and pomegranate shrubs can add fullness to your yard year round, as can fig trees. Tall plants, such as beans and corn, can double as a privacy wall in your back yard; Borden suggests using a trellis to create a “fence-like effect.” And herbs placed in decorative containers on front porches and patios offer inviting aromas.

Vegetables • Beans • Broccoli • Cabbage • Carrots • Cauliflower • Celery • Corn • Cucumbers • Eggplant • Garlic • Leeks • Lettuce • Okra • Onions • Peanuts • Peas • Peppers • Radish • Spinach • Soybeans • Squash • Sweet potatoes • Zucchini Fruits • Apples • Blueberries • Figs • Peaches • Pears • Pineapple guava • Pomegranates • Strawberries • Tomatoes Herbs • Basil • Cilantro • Chives • Lavender • Mint • Oregano • Parsley • Rosemary • Thyme

Whether you decide to just dabble with a few herbs this season or you’re prepared to forge full-steam ahead with a large vegetable garden, keep in mind that the goal is to have fun. “I always tell people not to get discouraged,” Dudley says. “You’re going to kill some plants, and that’s OK. It’s a learning process. Try something new and have fun with it.”

to the backyard. If done well, this can create the illusion of a home that’s becoming one with its surroundings. Evan Hunter of Hunter Reising Design & Build Inc. in Atlanta recently built a home addition beside an existing pool, creating a room that opens right out onto the pool. “We wanted to match the bluestone that we installed around the pool with a bluestone floor in the family room,” he says. “When the four doors are opened all the way, the floor helps blur the line between inside and outside.”

Right now, stone seems to be the most popular product used in interior applications. “Interior stone is still probably the most requested interior hardscape,” says Tom Dwyer of Harbour Fireplaces tend to be the most common indoor hardscaping features, which makes sense, as they are often the focal point of a room. However, fireplaces aren’t the only areas where stone can create a unique interior hardscape look. “Right now, we are seeing more clients liking the stacked-stone effect in an interior application,” says Matt Hoots of SawHorse Inc. and The Hoots Group Inc., both in Atlanta. “Recently, we’ve installed stone around bars, structural columns and even on bathroom walls.” Those who like to change their homes to fit the latest trends may find that once stone is installed, they have no interest in changing it as years go by. “Stone seems to be timeless; it endures forever,” says Judy Mozen of Handcrafted Homes Inc. in Roswell.

While stone is all the rage right now, brick is taking on a modern twist. Generally, you may picture indoor brick only in very contemporary spaces, such as lofts. “Lofts tend to be more contemporary, so you may see exposed brick walls from the interior,” Dwyer says. In older homes, many fireplaces are surrounded by brick, which maintains an elegant, timeless look. Today’s brick, however, often takes on a new style. Recently, Walter Lewis of Neighbors Home Remodeling in Roswell used the latest brick products in a unique kitchen remodel. “We used ‘thin brick,’ which is actual brick that is thinly sliced and applied like tile. The owner wanted the feel of an old New Orleans warehouse on the interior walls,” Lewis says. Thin brick is being used in a variety of applications, from entire walls to backsplashes or accent areas. Like stone, brick is super-durable and easy to care for.

Concrete Facts Most often used for floors and countertops, concrete has become much more versatile over the years. “I’ve had requests for stained concrete basement floors and concrete countertops,” Dwyer says. A concrete floor is not one that resembles your driveway, but rather a smooth, elegant surface that can withstand plenty of wear and tear. “Lately, concrete has really come into its own as a design feature on a floor,” Mozen says. “It can be etched, stained or painted. We’ve recently been doing a lot of staining on concrete slab basement floors. It’s quick and easy.” While you can create special designs or use a variety of colors for staining concrete, many homeowners are choosing nice, neutral shades. Because many basements in the South open out to a lower level of the yard, concrete floors can blend seamlessly with outdoor patios and hardscaping. www.atlantahomeimprovement.com

Because materials such as stone, brick and concrete are timeless and extremely durable, they tend to be significantly pricier than other choices. Here are a couple things to keep in mind: • Jobs are usually priced depending on accessibility and materials used. Persquare-foot pricing usually will not apply when the quantities are smaller. • Real stone costs the most, and manufactured stone and brick are usually less per unit. Blending In Incorporating hardscape materials into your home is easier than you might think. In most instances, you can add them without any major remodeling or structural changes to your home. “Since most of the materials are veneers, the existing structure is sufficient to hold their weight,” Dwyer says. He does point out that you should consult

a professional before you go ahead with a project in an existing home, however. “Some older homes were built with smaller framing materials and should be checked by someone knowledgeable before you add, for example, a concrete island top.” While full-size stone and brick take a little more time and effort to work with, the stone and brick veneers that are so popular generally go in pretty quickly. “The thinner veneers are easy to install since they don’t require a concrete footing like full-size stone or brick,” Hoots says. “Most of the veneers install like tile, so they go up quickly and are easy to handle.” Whether you’re adding stone to a family room that opens onto an outdoor entertaining

Eye For Design Consultancy, suggests

As the green movement continues to expand in popularity, manufacturers are taking note and creating more eco-friendly products. When it comes to countertops, one of—if not the most—eco-friendly options is a recycled material. According to Courtney Cachet, designer and TV personality with Cachet Enterprises, this can mean recycled glass or a recycled concrete (Portland cement and ash mixture). The number of compnies producing eco-friendly countertops is on the rise, and includes well-known names such as ECO by Consentino, 3form, ThinkGlass, Future Form Designs, Teragren and more. Green countertops are made from a variety of materials that can be organic, salvaged and reusable and include: • Mirrors salvaged from houses, buildings and factories • Glass from windows and bottles • Postconsumer paper and plastic waste • Porcelain from china, tiles, sinks, toilets and decorative elements • Industrial-furnace residuals Photos courtesy of ECO by Cosentino from factories in the form of crystallized ashes • Stone scrap from mountains, quarries, manufacturing and fabrication. When choosing which countertop is best suited to your needs, Cachet recommends also keeping the return-on-investment value in mind. “You shouldn’t buy a countertop that is not in line with the scale of your home,” she says. “An expensive home should have comparable materials, and an inexpensive home with high-end materials is foolish—you would most likely lose money on that purchase.” For most homeowners, installing a new countertop is only done once in the duration of their time in that home. This one-time-only decision puts a lot of weight on which choice is made, so be sure to research your options thoroughly and take your time making the decision. Once you’ve made your choice, you’ll be enjoying the countertop for years to come. 68

considering the following when choosing what type of countertop to install in your kitchen:

➤ How much food preparation do you do every day? “If the kitchen gets a lot of food-prep traffic and a lot of people in and out every day, eating or working on the surface, it means the surface will be cleaned often and will receive a lot of wear and tear,” Rien says. “This should be calculated, and a highly durable surface should be chosen.”

➤ How maintenance-averse are you? “If you’re someone who has a lot of traffic on the countertop, but you’re not as interested in keeping certain products off of the surface, I advise against a product that is fussy, requires sealing or is at all permeable,” Rien says.

➤ Plan ahead. “Think about how the countertop will be used over time,” Rien says. “Bar-top seating doesn’t work for small children, but they aren’t small forever. Think about how your family will grow and evolve over the next 10 years, even if you don’t anticipate being in your home that long.”

surface. It’s important to have a base of compacted gravel at least 6 inches deep.

One of the most prominent features of a home exterior is the driveway—it can either act as a chameleon, blending in with the rest of the exterior, or a highlight, standing out as a focal point. With this range of possibilities, homeowners have several options from which to choose. “When deciding the right driveway material for you,” says Al Garrett, director of training for House Doctors Professional Handyman Services, “you will need to consider the cost, the climate where you live and the finished look you want for your property.”

choosing cobblestone If cost is no object, Al Garrett, director of training for House Doctors Professional Handyman Services, recommends

Asphalt The most popular of all driveway materials, asphalt endures all weather conditions. “Asphalt performs well in hot or cold climates, and even provides a good surface for snow removal,” Garrett says, adding that, depending on the care you give it, the driveway will generally give you good service for 12-30 years. Cost: Approximately $4-$6 per square foot Maintenance: Needs to be sealed every 3-5 years Concrete In milder weather conditions, concrete driveways can outlast asphalt. “With proper maintenance, concrete driveways will usually provide good service for 2050 years—but don’t expect to get 50 years of service if you live in a climate that has harsh winters,” Garrett says. Cost: Approximately $6-$10 per square foot Maintenance: Seal the concrete every fall, avoid salting the driveway in the winter and repair cracks as they occur Pavers If you want your driveway to stand out as a focal point of your home’s exterior, pavers are a great—albeit more expensive—option. According to Lou Manfredini, Ace Hardware’s home expert, concrete or clay pavers add value to the home and are offered in more design characteristics, colors and patterns than other driveway options. Cost: Approximately $12-$18 per square foot Maintenance: Seal every 1-2 years; repair if an area sinks 70

installing a cobblestone driveway. “In my opinion, cobblestone are the most attractive of all paving materials, and the most durable,” he says, adding that cobblestones can be layered in many different patterns. While the material is very costly (Garrett estimates that an average cobblestone driveway can cost up to $30,000 or more), the driveway can provide service for up to 100 years.

tips for hiring a pro ➤ Look for as many third-party endorsements as possible.

➤ Find out if the pro is a member of any professional organizations, such as the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI).

decordemon IKEA-ology

How clever thinking can turn low-price-point IKEA items into high-end designer gems. BY BRIAN PATRICK FLYNN Photos by Sarah Dorio

Whether I’m working with a budget that’s $5,000 or $50,000, it’s pretty much a sure thing that IKEA will come into the picture at some point. Lucky for us Atlantans, we have one that’s super accessible and right smack in the middle of our city. From fabric by the yard to popular dining chairs, the megastore has an abundance of items that can easily be upgraded to look like pricy, custom-designed creations. As the following examples show, getting creative with IKEA can be a beautiful thing for your house—and your checkbook. FIRST-CLASS UPGRADE

YOUR SLIP (COVER) IS SHOWING

I turned to IKEA for both draperies and upholstered seating in this area of a Midtown master suite. I used four pairs of RITVA panels at $19.99 each, then had Distinctive Design in Douglasville add blackout liner, fan pleats and a 3-inch border of black-brown trim. The medium-price-point KARLSTAD swivel chairs paired with big money David Hicks La Fiorentina throw pillows gave the entire area a high-price-point feel. Believe it or not, we spent less to furnish this space than we did on the kitchen backsplash!

When designing a dining space, I wanted streamlined, slip-covered chairs that were not only fancy, gender-neutral and graphic, but also super durable. By sticking with IKEA’s classic, timeless $59.99 HENRIKSDAL chair and a slipcover made from indoor/outdoor Sunbrella fabric, guests were able to stare at their pretty cake ... and carelessly eat it, too.

GOING AROUND THE SUBJECT

To stay on budget with this TV producer’s lounge, I paired one-of-a-kind vintage dining chairs and a super-duper high-end banquette with a trio of $149 DOCKSTA tables. The all-white penny pinchers are doppelgangers for Saarinen’s classic modern Tulip Table—a classic that starts at around $2,500. You do the math.

turbine-powered electrical systems reduce the energy and carbon load. Celebrities Bill Nye and Ed Begley are in a race to add every new product in the enviromarket to their California homes, but few of us are in a position to exercise that option. Thankfully, small changes can produce satisfying results. A can of lowexpansion foam will seal penetrations in the home envelope, reducing loss of conditioned air. Weather stripping accomplishes the same thing around doors and window sashes. Inexpensive shrink-wrap window treatments improve the performance of old single-pane windows. For a few dollars, your home’s heating or cooling costs are reduced. Roll or loose attic insulation is another inexpensive way to reduce energy costs during both the heating and cooling seasons. With proper precautions, this is a practical DIY project. Concentrate your efforts in the attic where returns are best realized. We all learned a major conservation tactic from our mothers: “Turn off that light if you’re not using it,” or words to that effect. Turn off the light, convert to compact florescent bulbs and unplug chargers when not in use. A group of little bites add up to measurable savings. Not huge, surely,

april Tips for creating and maintaining a beautiful garden BY MARY KAY WOODWORTH

Spring is in the air! The dogwoods and azaleas are blooming, and this is the month to plant annuals and start your summer vegetables outside. Careful, though—the average “last frost” day in Atlanta is April 15th! Garden Maintenance

➤ Prune early bloomers, such as forsythia, Carolina jessamine, quince and winter jasmine after they have bloomed.

➤ Azaleas, rhododendrons and camellias can be pruned after their flowers fade. Apply 16-4-8 fertilizer around the dripline of the shrubs now.

➤ Fertilize bulbs again after they’ve flowered—snip off the seedheads, but let the foliage die naturally, as this helps to feed the bulb for next year.

➤ The end of April is the time to fertilize warm-season grasses (zoysia, Bermuda and centipede). Wait until about 50 percent of the lawn has greened. Repeat in May and June. FORSYTHIA can be pruned this month after it has bloomed.

➤ Fescue can be fertilized in late April; then hold off until September. ➤ If you have an automatic sprinkler system. Ensure that each sprinkler is properly adjusted so the lawn is evenly watered and no water is wasted.

➤ Till your vegetable garden bed; add fertilizer and lime according to soil test recommendations, but wait until mid April to transplant vegetable seedlings into the garden.

➤ Mulch well to conserve water and cut down on weeds.

➤ Divide perennials and ornamental grasses; fertilize perennials monthly (ornamental grasses don’t need fertilization) with a 10-10-10, or a

6- or 9-month slow-release fertilizer instead. Make sure to water! What to Plant

➤ Mix it up in your flower beds and containers. Add herbs to your garden. Parsley, rosemary, basil, dill, lemon grass and fennel are easy additions that require almost no maintenance.

Outdoor Living

➤ Get the kids involved in vegetable gardening! Let them each pick a vegetable and give them their own container in which to plant it.

% - ++'#,,)#*+,)

Tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers are great choices.

➤ Spring- and summer-blooming annuals can be planted in late April after the last frost threat. The old-time rule of thumb is: don’t plant annuals until Good Friday— this year, April 22.

What types of plants can I install around my new saltwater pool?

Don’t Miss the Spring Atlanta Home Show!

Mark your calendar for the 33rd Annual Spring Atlanta Home Show, which will take place April 1-3 at the Cobb Galleria Centre. Visitors will experience the season’s largest marketplace for home improvement products and services, featuring everything from flooring, window and door experts to home-cleaning products, lawn and garden specialists and everything in between. More than 350 exhibitors will be on hand to answer questions and give advice at this three-day event, and Tonya M. Williams, real estate expert on HGTV’s Designed to Sell and Bang for your Buck! will be presenting daily at 3 p.m. For more information and to purchase tickets, visit www.atlantahomeshow.com.

Set in Stone

Stones International recently opened its new showroom, Bottega, at 129 Armour Drive in Atlanta. The new venue, the former site of the G&L Marble warehouse, boasts 40,000 square feet of space and houses more than 3,000 slabs of stone (more than 300 varieties), which include many new and exotic varieties of granite, marble, travertine, onyx and soapstone. Open to both designers and homeowners, Bottega features a design studio and display area so customers can comfortably view the products. Visit www.stonesintl.com for more information. www.atlantahomeimprovement.com

Keep in mind that salt splashing on leaves can contribute to burning the leaves in the sun. Also, salt in the landscape beds is said to rob the plants of moisture, which will also lead to leaf burning. While it is important to keep these points in mind, I personally have not experienced any notable problems by having plantings adjacent to salt pools. There are quite a few plants that are salt water tolerant. They include: Groundcovers: ivy, lowgrowing juniper, jasmine, verbena, gaillardia and daylilies Annual ornamentals: verbena, begonia, ornamental cabbage and lantana

Shrubs: holly, Indian hawthorn, lady banks rose, Rugosa rose and some ornamental grasses Trees: Palm trees that can withstand Atlanta winters and Amur maples

The more a homeowner wants to enjoy the pool with less hands-on manual work, the more automated the system he should choose. Instead of walking outside in the cold or at night, a homeowner can schedule lights in the pool and landscape to turn on and off automatically. —Elizabeth Lusk, manager of Lusk Pools in Canton

he air is warm, and the sun is hot on your skin.

According to a survey by Better Homes and Gardens: • 78 percent of households are eating more fresh vegetables and/or fruits • 49 percent of women plan to grow their own fruits and/or vegetables this year • 71 percent of households will likely use fresh herbs in their food this year

The owners of this Sandy Springs home wanted to update their builder-grade kitchen to open space for their busy family of five and bring more light into the room. The team at Kitchen Transitions Atlanta moved the breakfast table into the dining room, making it the new breakfast space, and moved the dining room into the former living room. To allow more light and open up the space, the team created a large pass-through in the form of an arched window. An island that directs traffic away from the cooking area was added and features a stainless under-mount sink, trash pullout, wine cube and a bookshelf on the end. Now, the family has a place to gather, and the kids have a designated area for homework.

Staycations Atlanta’s Most Exquisite Outdoor Living

Outdoor living is the concept of creating functional outdoor spaces or “rooms,” extending your living space from within your home into your outdoor environment. More and more of us are choosing to stay home and vacation in our own backyard. Adding an outdoor living room complete with grill, refrigerator, fireplaces, water features and comfortable seating areas is like creating a resort on your own property. With outdoor lighting, landscape plantings, pavilions and pools, we may never want to leave home again. Our designs can help you take advantage of Georgia’s ideal climate for outdoor living.
