Thank your energy efficient stars.

Wish you could improve your home’s energy performance? You can, with Georgia Power’s Home Performance with ENERGY STAR® program. A comprehensive assessment will reveal how your home’s energy performance can be improved. Then, depending on improvements you make, you may get rebates up to $1,900. Not to mention utility bill savings up to 20% annually. Plus, you may qualify for income tax credits up to $1,500. To learn more about Home Performance with ENERGY STAR in your area, visit georgiapower.com/homeperformance or call 1.800.524.2421 ext. 900.

Assessment must be performed and improvements completed by a qualified contractor participating in Georgia Power’s Home Performance with ENERGY STAR® program. Contractor may charge a fee for the assessment. Rebate eligibility depends on assessment results. All work is subject to third party verification. Any improvement agreements are between the customer and contractor. Georgia Power takes no responsibility for improvement agreements. Contractors set work prices. The full $1,900 in rebates may not apply if customer’s home is not eligible for all qualifying improvements. All reimbursement forms must be signed, submitted and reviewed for accuracy before rebate is paid. Rebates are subject to limitations and subject to change. Customer’s actual utility bill savings will vary depending on individual energy usage and qualifying improvements made. Potential income tax credits depend on qualifying improvements made and may be available for 2010. Check with your tax advisor for details.

editor’sletter Spring Brings New Possibilities Frameless Shower Enclosures

This issue of Atlanta Home Improvement was my first, and after poring through tons of home improvement, renovation and interior design resources, I’ve realized there is much to learn! But the learning process has been a fun one, and this first issue alone has opened my eyes to the many amazing, innovative possibilities and products available to homeowners.

Consider flooring, for example. It’s easy to take the surfaces that we walk on in our homes for granted, day in and day out, without giving them a second thought. But, your home’s flooring is the foundation of each room—whether it be concrete, stone, tile, carpet, wood or beyond—and not only plays a key role in the room’s functionality, but also defines its style. Our comprehensive flooring special section beginning on page 23 offers excellent tips and recommendations to choose the best flooring for every room in your home, taking into account appearance, maintenance and more. Switching up your flooring is one of the many ways to improve the interior of your home, but don’t forget about making some renovations to the great outdoors, either. Whether you already have a pool and are looking to add some fun features, or have been thinking of installing one, we’ve got your go-to guide for all pool-related topics beginning on page 46.

Ask About SHOWERGUARD Glass With Permanent Protection Against Staining, Corrosion And Discoloration

But before the summer months hit us with heat and humidity, consider the imminent seasonal issue: allergies. Pollen is an inevitable annoyance here in Atlanta, but there may be other factors affecting your sinus problems, and they may be right in your home. Check out our “Allergy-Free Home” article on page 41 to find out ways to fight allergies from the inside. As a new member to the Atlanta Home Improvement staff, I welcome your comments and suggestions, and would love to hear from you! Please e-mail me at editor@homeimprovementmag.com and share your thoughts.

I need to stain my deck. What products should I use, and how can I do it myself?

A:

Maintenance of a deck is important not only for longevity, but also for the safety of those using the space. Here is a brief checklist I use when it is time to re-stain a deck. 1. Inspect. Does the deck have loose boards or nails? Rotting? Are the stairs and railings sturdy? 2. Clean. Use a

Not Just For Pies Remodeling Company Expands and Renames Can’t find Home Spaces Remodeling anymore? Don’t worry; the company is still around, just with a different name. Recently changed to HSGroup to reflect newly added divisions to the original Home Spaces, the firm now offers much more than residential remodeling. HSGroup now includes Home Seal, an energy-solutions Mike and Dianne Perry division that provides energy-efficient products, and Home Solutions, a handyman/repair division available to clients. A current member of the National Association of Remodeling Industry (NARI), HSGroup is locally owned and operated by Mike and Dianne Perry, who are committed to helping their clients find affordable solutions for remodeling projects and energy-conservation needs. Looking for a one-of-a-kind, ecofriendly flooring option? Then check out what Lamar Pecan Co. offers. In 2002, RG Lamar and his father decided that instead of burning the piles of pecan trees they thinned out of their orchard, they would put the natural resource to good use, sawing and curing the wood from the trees, then selling that wood to flooring manufacturers. This new wood flooring has been used in former Senator Sam Nunn‘s home in St. Simons, covering an entire level of his house and comprising a custom-built desk in his study. Lamar Pecan Co.’s products have been placed in homes in Atlanta and Destin, Fla. as well. Lamar and his father hope to make this a viable enterprise and provide homeowners with an attractive flooring product that benefits the environment. HomeAid Atlanta and Tapestry Youth Ministries are working together to renovate the duplex for mothers between the ages of 18 and 23 and their children, who are homeless or on the verge of becoming homeless. So far, the duplex has been renovated with new floors, a new roof, exterior siding, light fixtures, appliances, faucets and more, thanks to volunteers. hen building or remodeling a home, flooring materials are often chosen for function and general aesthetic, sometimes without regard to the space’s other interior-design elements. This common mistake can lead to a decrease in your

home’s resale value. Be aware that choosing a flooring material and design is your opportunity to create a cohesive, amazing interior with a floor you’ll be proud to show off. Whenever it’s time for remodeling or designing the interior of your home, remember to start from the ground up and focus on flooring first.

The first decision to make when designing your home’s floors is the material you will use. “Keep it simple,” recommends Sarah Barnard, LEED AP and interior designer with Sarah Barnard Design. “Choose one amazing material and use a lot of it. Resist the temptation to mix materials over large areas to maintain an upscale and timeless appeal.”

Walking the planks With all the options available, it’s no surprise that the woodfloor look is a major trend in homes today. Between all the options, two specific factors play a role in determining which wood-floor option to choose: budget and eco-friendliness. it never needs to be replaced. With proper care, homeowners will not even need to refinish their floors for many years. Most hardwood-flooring companies install hardwood flooring in phases so that homeowners can create one area at a time. Unfinished wood can be installed and finished in the home for as little as $5 per square foot,” Mireles-Anzures continues. “Traditional wood floors are increasingly giving way to engineered products due to improved performance and reduced cost,” says Carol Goodwin, co-owner of Goodwin Heart Pine Company, a manufacturer of reclaimed heart-pine and original-growth heart-cypress floors. “With some advanced processes, you can have an engineered-wood floor that truly looks and lasts like solid wood, and can be installed where solid wood is impractical.” Going green doesn’t mean doing without hardwood flooring. In terms of the environmental impact a wood-flooring product has, several green options are available, including bamboo (a sustainable source of wood) and reclaimed hardwoods (a reused/recycled choice). “A 100-percent reclaimed-wood floor not only lessens the need to harvest live trees, but it weaves pieces of American history into any room while also carrying the age-old character markings and strength that render it truly unique,” says Tommy Sancic, founder and owner of Olde Wood Limited, a manufacturer of 100-percent reclaimed, antique hardwood-flooring products. “Another advantage is that this wood was originally harvested from old growth—virgin forests that produce some of the strongest, most beautiful and unique wood with the tightest grain.” Barnard agrees, saying, “I often work with reclaimed wood. Reclaimed hardwoods have a charm

When it first became a popular flooring option, bamboo was a light-colored wood with distinct lines in the planks. Now, a number of options in bamboo exist, making it just as versatile as any other hardwood. Jennifer Zilka, CEO of Grass Elements LLC, a member of the National Wood Flooring Association and manufacturer of bamboo-flooring products, shares three popular options in bamboo: Horizontal bamboo: This construction of bamboo lends itself to contemporary and Asian styles of design with clean lines and a calming appeal. Vertical bamboo: Offering a more diverse style than horizontal bamboo, vertical bamboo has both uniformity to appeal to Asian-design enthusiasts, as well as orderly construction that provides a visual balance for a room that’s classically designed. Strand-woven bamboo: Rich in visual texture, this type of bamboo works well in traditional, rustic and tropical designs. Strand-woven bamboo is also just as hard, if not harder, than traditional oakhardwood floors.

of distressing. There is a certain warmth and some kind of magic that historic hardwoods bring to a project.” “Ask your flooring company if the wood has been certified by the Forestry Stewardship Council (FSC), or another organization that certifies responsible production and consumption of forestry products. This ensures that each tree harvested is replaced by multiple seedlings,” Mireles-Anzures suggests. Stubbs agrees, saying, “Looking for the FSC symbol on wood flooring ensures that you are buying from a manufacturer that is environmentally friendly.”

Cork chic Offering a unique texture, cork is a great option from both an aesthetic and functional standpoint. As an interior designer and LEED AP (the U.S. Green Building Council’s program for certifying professionals for their eco-friendly knowledge and practices), Barnard is familiar with many green-flooring choices, and she lists cork as one of her favorite wood substitutes. “It is soft underfoot, available in tiles, planks, rolls and sheets, and has the visual warmth of wood,” she says, adding that cork is available in many colors, but can also be stained in custom colors. “Cork flooring creates a Craftsman look,” Busby says. “It has a consistent small grain, and you can create various looks by the size and shape of the piece of material. Install larger pieces with a natural wavy edge that meets up to another floor material such as stone—it becomes very organic.”

Remember, wood is only an economical choice if you take care of it. David Flesher, owner of Flesher’s Hardwood Floors, suggests buying cleaning products specifically approved for hardwood floors. “An inexpensive home recipe for cleaning and sanitizing your hardwoods is to mix a white-vinegar-andwater solution (one part vinegar to four parts water). Be sure to only use a dampened mop when cleaning your floors,” Flesher says. In most cases, spot cleaning will do the job. Laura MirelesAnzures warns, “Don’t use a vineger and water solution on floors with a polyurethane finish, [only use it on] hardwoods with a tungoil finish.” Mohawk’s Hardwood and Laminate Floor Cleaner is an ecofriendly way to clean your hardwood floors. Made specifically for hardwood and/or laminates, it’s also biodegradable. You can even use it on vinyl surfaces.

Inlay Information Inlay flooring products are made of high-grade materials including exotic and regional hardwoods such as walnut, mahogany, sapeli, yellow heart, maple, wenge, cherry and oak. we encourage them to add instant eye appeal by installing wide planks, distressed boards, contrasting colors or reclaimed-wood elements,” Sancic says. “The fun really begins in areas of the home that should be highlighted like staircases, foyers, basements, a home office, study, master suite, kitchen and master bathroom,” says Jason Seltzer of Great American Floors. “[You can get] different patterns such as herringbone, a Brazilian cherry border and/or borders in these areas when using hardwood floors.”

Wood substitutes “I am a fan of laminates,” says Stubbs, who prefers laminates for her two 90-pound dogs. “Newer, higher-end laminates are extremely realistic and practical. And if you want an exotic look like merbau or mahogany, but don’t want wood harvested from these vulnerable areas—or cannot afford their price—laminates are the way to go.” Would you rather have carpet? Mohawk offers two different eco-friendly carpets. SmartStrand with DuPont Sorona is made from corn sugar that requires 30-percent less energy to manufacture than traditional nylon carpet. This flooring is made of a new type of fiber called triexta, which features stain resistance woven into the fiber rather than applied. Mohawk’s other eco-friendly line, EverStrand carpet, is made from recycled plastic bottles. One out of every four plastic bottles recycled in North America becomes a Mohawk carpet. Most of the materials are used to create EverStrand carpets.

The inlay is typically bonded to a cabinet-grade plywood substrate, which gives each medallion or border a stable base to match your floors and allows the inlay to be a lifelong object. The net effect of medallions and borders is to provide a focal point and a rich alternative to an otherwise plain floor—one that will last as long as your floor. Medallions and borders can be installed in either new or existing floors and then finished with the floor. Inlay floor products have also been used frequently in pre-finished or engineered floors and therefore would be finished before they are installed. The process of installing the medallions and borders is comparatively easy. Installation manuals are available for both homeowners and professional installers. —Kathy Andersen, Inlay Product World Inc.

Tile patterns To create a focal point in a tile floor, Rien suggests setting the tiles in a certain pattern or layout. “A traditional square tile of any size laid in a grid pattern www.homeimprovementmag.com

is boring and sort of recedes into the background,” she says. “However, a layout on the diagonal creates a sense of movement. Also a mix of reflective and non-reflective tile can create a great dynamic of contrast, even if the color is the same.”

Create with paint Those who are partial to either a worn-in, rustic charm or a highly creative and unique floor should consider painting their existing wood or laminate floors. “Painted floors work best when they enhance existing flooring that is less than perfect,”

“Flooring defines space and gives a room boundaries. It’s also a major determining factor for how light is reflected and the mood that is created in the room. If the room is already dark, consider not only light-colored floors, but reflective materials, as well.” —Paige Rien, interior designer with HGTV’s Hidden Potential, principal of Rien With An Eye Design Consultancy

“Use area rugs in front of entryways, in hallways, in front of the kitchen sink and in other high traffic areas where the floors will wear down.” —Laura MirelesAnzures, Daniels Floors

Sancic says. “Painted floors become a more effective part of a room’s design when the technique of selective painting is used to add color, form and atmosphere.” On the design front, Barnard recommends painting existing floors for a specific style, color or image. “Painted floors always remind me of the country,” Barnard says. “I have seen everything from a solid-red plywood kitchen floor to an old vinyl floor painted over with an abstract rendition of outer space, as well as cute white borders on wideplank pine floors.”

Lovely layers When creating the design of your flooring, Rien says, “The key is to choose a flooring plan that is multilayered. So, for the entire floor of a home, I suggest a base that works room to room, and then choices for area rugs that can define space for rooms or

t best, allergies may have you sniffling and sneezing when the flower blooms announce, “It’s spring.” At worst, allergies can keep you stuck at home, feeling miserable, sometimes all year long. But what if being stuck at home is actually making the problem worse? Thanks to pet dander, dust mites, molds, mildews and other aggravators, your house may be part of the allergy problem. Allen P. Rathey, president of The Healthy House Institute, explains, “Allergies are immune-system issues, so really the basic idea is to boost overall health rather than try to just attack symptoms. Still, once you are allergic, cleaning up the indoor environment—and preventing allergens from getting in or spreading—is key.” To help allergy sufferers clean up and breathe freely, following are some of the top allergy-relief and -prevention products for your home.

Dry out Dust mites and molds need high humidity to thrive, Rathey explains. Georgia’s muggy climate provides the perfect breeding ground. Invest in a dehumidifier; any time the relative humidity in your home is above 50 percent, you need one. A product such as the Soleus Air CFM-40E is lightweight and quiet. It has a built-in humidistat to measure the humidity in your home and turn on automatically when necessary. Sylvane, www.sylvane.com; $224

Crazy for color Paint can contain high levels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which can aggravate allergies and cause respiratory illnesses. But that doesn’t mean you have to live in a paint-free house. Benjamin Moore’s Natura is the only nationally available interior paint that remains free of VOCs even after tinting in any color. What does zero-VOC really mean? The paint is virtually odorless. Plus, it is available in more than 3,300 Benjamin Moore colors and can be color-matched. Breathe easy Designed for people with everyday air-quality concerns, Austin air purifiers eliminate airborne particles, chemicals, odors and gasses. The HealthMate removes virtually all airborne particles by performing several critical air-quality remediation functions. Its four-stage filtration system contains true medical-grade HEPA and activated-carbon filters. “If you are allergic to airborne allergens like pollen, cat and dog dander and mold, air purifiers help in room-specific environments,” says Cade McDonald, founder of AchooAllergy.com “We recommend the bedroom because that is where you spend the majority of the time. We educate our customers to make their bedrooms their allergy-free zones; if you have a pet that you are allergic to, keep it out of the bedroom.” ecoEmporium, (404) 875-5224, www.theecoemporium.com; $299-$469 Photo courtesy of ecoEmporium

The latest and greatest trends for pools By Blair Branch

w

With the sweltering Southern summers, pools in Atlanta serve a dual purpose of function and fun. A backyard isn’t complete without a place to cool off and, considering the extended warm-weather months, Atlanta is an ideal city in which to own a pool. But the pools of today aren’t the vinyl-lined, chlorine-filled ones of yesteryear. New materials,

making waves in the pool world.

Not your childhood pool Recent years have shown the rise of the pool/spa combination, but now homeowners are spending even more money, investing in not only this combination, but also in fire pits and fireplaces, waterfalls, outdoor kitchens, televisions, sound systems and fiber-optic, colored lights in the pool. According to Rip Hooker, construction and sales manager at Sunbelt Pools of Georgia, gadgets designed to run the pool system with ease are gaining popularity. “Everyone gets handheld remotes for their system,” he says. “These remotes power everything—including the hot tub and cleaning system—and enable the user to set controls and timers much easier than having to put a hole through their kitchen wall.” In terms of shape, homeowners are opting for custom, free-form pools. “People are requesting personalized pools. We consider factors like viewpoints from the house, the water features they’ll have, the land in their backyard and the access from the house, and then we design to suit their needs,” Hooker says. owner of Atlas Pools, says that custom-style finishes, such as those by Pebbletec (an alternative to a plaster pool), are sought after by homeowners. “These finishes are not only beautiful, they are long lasting and easy to maintain,” he says.

Alternative sanitizer systems, such as copper-based systems, provide a greener alternative to chlorine. Saline pools are also popular, Hooker says, but still aren’t a 100percent environmentally friendly option. “With a saline

entry pools and spas in the middle of the pool, completely surrounded by water. Shelf-entry pools, consisting of a large step for lounging before a drop-off into the water, are also popular, and a great style for most homeowners,” Hooker says. “To promote year-round use, heated pools are the norm,” he notes.

The simplest way to make a pool more eco-friendly is to add a cover. Doing so prevents water loss and conserves electricity by preventing heat loss. Covers also prevent rain from diluting chemicals, eliminating the need to add more. Solar panels also make pools greener. Depending on the home’s orientation to the sun, solar panels may be added

he says, “It’s a waterfall built into a wall. For the same amount of money, homeowners can buy much more elaborate water features.” While some features may have a greater cost upfront, they save money for the homeowner. Pool covers top the list for both Hooker and Spiezio as a sound investment. Whether the cover is automatic or floating, the money saved on energy bills and pool chemicals is enough for covers to pay for themselves within a few years. Fiber-optic and LED lights are also upgrades worth the cost, as these bulbs last longer and require less maintenance than incandescent bulbs. Another splurge-worthy feature to ensure family fun is a waterslide. While some may groan at the prospective maintenance, Dave Weathers, general manager of SlideScapes LLC, insists that it isn’t as menacing as one may think. “We recommend waxing the slide from time to time and keeping the slide clear of any foreign debris. If cared for properly, a fiberglass slide can last 10 to 12 years or more.” A great investment is worthless if it isn’t used, so homeowners are spending their dollars on the whole package, a trend that neither Hooker nor Spiezio predict to die anytime soon. “With the long usable outdoor time in Atlanta,” Hooker adds, “homeowners are investing in inviting areas to enjoy the beautiful weather with family and friends.” Photo courtesy of Slidescapes LLC www.homeimprovementmag.com

Make an Entrance A first impression that reflects your style Entryways create your home’s first impression to new visitors. Whether you have an eclectic vibe or a traditional home, decorating your entryway is the ultimate way to express yourself to guests. Knock, knock New door trends embrace doors with detailing or windows. Consider whether you want a double door versus a single door. Or start by deciding which material is right for you. Wood doors are beautiful but can get damaged over time, especially if you don’t have a storm Photo courtesy of Signature Entries door installed. Steel www.signatureentries.com doors and fiberglass doors can be aesthetically pleasing, and some even resemble wood. Use windows as a border around your door to create a stylish look that is also convenient, allowing you to see visitors before opening. Furniture options Depending on how large an entryway is, there are options when it comes to furniture. Prioritizing your needs will help. For instance, is it important to have a sitting area where people can wait and linger? Or would it be more convenient to have a table for keys, mail or art? Maybe you would prefer to have a mirror or a beautiful painting in your entryway. All of these options are what makes each home unique and exciting to visit. From ceiling to floor From head to toe, entryways can be extravagant, depending on your style. Common flooring options include wood, marble, slate or tile. Or, you may want to make your entryway a little bit warmer by adding a beautiful rug. For 2-story entryways, you can add a dramatic lighting fixture or chandelier—there are many options when it comes to lighting at different levels of extravagance. If you’re thinking about installing a new lighting design, ask for a dimming system to have more control over mood and energy consumption. ATLANTA HOME IMPROVEMENT APRIL 2010

A Rosy Outlook

Easy-care, low-maintenance rose gardening

that receives 6 or more hours of direct sun each day. Roses do best in well-drained soil, so place them in a raised bed or on a hillside or terraced area. Planting: Spring and fall are the best seasons to plant roses. Before planting, water your rose plant well to help it through the transition. Watering: Water deeply rather than frequently. Avoid sprinkling the leaves as this can promote black spots and mildew. Low-maintenance varieties require very little supplemental water if rainfall is sufficient. Fertilizing: Fertilize according to the Photo courtesy of All-America Rose Selections

Many home gardeners shy away from planting roses due to their reputation as being difficult to grow and high-maintenance. Today’s rose hybrids, however, have been specifically bred to be hardier, more disease-resistant and require less maintenance, taking the fear out of planting them. Low-maintenance choices Roses that have been specially bred and tested to grow well in a wide range of climates are available. To select the best roses for your landscape, look for the American Rose Society (ARS) rating, which is a useful guideline for predicting the success of a rose. ARS ratings are typically from 6-6.9 for “fair” to 9-9.9 for “outstanding.” Other good choices include roses designated as Earth Kind Roses by the Texas A&M University’s Agriculture program, which tests and evaluates roses for a high level of landscape performance and outstanding disease and insect tolerance and resistance. To see the Earth Kind recommendations, visit http://earthkindroses.tamu.edu. An easy-care knockout If you’re looking for a true, easy-care rose, many experts recommend the Knock Out Rose, a shrub rose that blooms from April to November. The most diseaseresistant type on the market, Knock Out Roses have a generous bloom cycle (about every 5-6 weeks) that will continue until the first hard frost and are heat tolerant throughout the entire United States. Currently available in seven varieties, all Knock Out Roses are self-cleaning so there is no need to deadhead. You can plant them individually among shrubs, annuals and perennials in mixed beds and borders, or plant in large groups to create a colorful hedge. For more information, visit www.theknockoutrose.com. Maintenance matters Don’t avoid planting roses because of the many pest and disease problems traditionally associated with them. These problems can often be minimized or avoided. The most important point to remember is that success for any plant begins with selecting the proper site selection and planting. See Rose Care 101 for tips on planting. 56

directions on your rose fertilizer container. Roses are heavy feeders and will perform best if fed regularly. Pruning: Pruning depends on the type of rose, so do your research, but generally, prune roses while they are still dormant in the early spring. If your rose only blooms once a year, prune after it blooms. Lowmaintenance roses usually don’t require pruning—just remove any dead canes each fall. Mulching: Mulch around your roses following planting. Keep mulch away from the stem to help avoid insect and disease problems. —All-America Rose Selections, www.rose.org; American Rose Society, www.ars.org

Bathrooms have become multi-purpose yet elegant spaces. They are a place where you shower, shave, apply makeup and fix your hair, and they are also retreats where you can sit back, soak and relax. With so many demands in one room, it’s important to create a lighting scheme that makes both you and your design shine. The big picture Task lighting must be bright enough to do its job, but must also work well with the soft, warm glow of indirect accent lighting, according to the American Lighting Association (ALA). When selecting lighting fixtures, look for finishes that complement rather than compete with plumbing accessories, tile, paint and wallpaper. Mirror, mirror The majority of your daily tasks in the bathroom happen at the mirror or vanity area, so it’s key that you select the right lighting to get the job done. For optimal illumination, choose a fixture that shines from above and install accent lights on either side of the mirror to minimize shadows. An additional bright idea to consider is installing a small, lit concave mirror. Scrub a dub, dub When shopping for lighting to place over the shower or tub, select fixtures offering light that is bright enough for you to clean, shave and read labels. The ALA suggests recessed downlights that are designed for use in wet areas, also recommending that you install shields around the lights. The shields will protect relaxing bathers’ eyes from unwanted glare. If you want to add a dramatic touch, you can use an adjustable accent light. Simple savings When creating a lighting design, keep your pocketbook and the environment in mind by selecting ENERGY STAR-qualified fixtures and bulbs. They provide the same bright, warm light, but use about 75 percent less energy than standard lighting, produce 75 percent less heat and last up to 10 times longer. 58

available in your area.

The most important element to consider when selecting windows and doors is how they will affect the energy values of the home. Take into consideration the type of material and the area in which you live. For example, humidity and temperature cause wood to expand and contract, so if your climate’s temperature drastically fluctuates, you might want to choose a material that can withstand the changes. Look for windows and doors with Energy Star ratings, meaning that the product has met strict energy-efficiency guidelines set by the Environmental Protection Agency and U.S. Department of Energy. Another way to minimize heat gain in the summer and heat loss in the winter is through sealing and insulation. Insulation can be improved by inserting argon gas between panes, utilizing dual panes for windows and by using dual glazes on windows, such as low-E (low-emissivity) coatings. These help to reduce the amount of heat that passes through a window. This is not only a green practice, but it also will save you money on heating and cooling. Remember that windows and doors can warm or cool a home, letting heat in or out, depending on their age and any corresponding leakiness. Installing new windows and doors can reduce the amount of conditioned air released into the outdoors. Replacing windows and doors with innovative options can help cut utility bills and make your home more comfortable. Inefficient windows are one of the largest sources of heat or air-conditioning loss because of their low insulating ability and high leakage rate. Installing energy-efficient windows can help save 25 to 50 percent of the energy used to heat and cool homes. Many new windows come with an extra piece called a flange. Install the flange to provide high-quality water and air sealing, which helps to improve insulation. The flange is similar to a picture frame. Place caulking on the back of the flange before installation. 62

➤ The Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) rating measures the amount of heat from sunlight a window lets in. The U-factor is another calculation of how well heat moves through material; it is the measurement of the quality of insulation and its ability to prevent the movement of heat.

the three window types 1. The first type is less energy-efficient than Energy Star. 2. The second type is a widely used, Energy Star-rated window with a U-factor of 0.35 or lower. This type always has a Low-E coating. 3. Less common is a high-performance window, which dramatically exceeds Energy Star ratings. The last category includes high-end brand names and could have up to three times the efficiency of Energy Star. Windows with a fiberglass frame and triple glazing fall into this last category.

homework Movie Making What to consider when purchasing a home theater BY BRIAN BERGHERM, GEORGIA HOME THEATER

Photo courtesy of Digital Interiors, www.diiatl.com

Home theaters are a great way to make your home a fun place for family and friends to hang out. But, in times like these, the high cost of an extensive home-theater room can deter families from exploring the option. The experts at Georgia Home Theater recommend the following ways to cut the cost of a home theater without cutting back on quality:

➤ Don’t buy everything at once. With the help of a hometheater design expert, establish a timeline that outlines when you’ll add each system—video, audio, lighting and seating. The expert will make a plan that is easy to follow and modify. By determining a pathway to building the ultimate system over time, you will save money in the long run. It’s always better to add new pieces to a system than to replace cheaper components purchased with the intention of hitting a certain price point. 64

ATLANTA HOME IMPROVEMENT APRIL 2010

0410_064-065_Hwork_theater.indd 64

➤ Do your homework. Research each component you plan to incorporate. If you skimp on quality at the get-go, chances are you’ll pay for it later. Companies that specialize in the design of custom entertainment systems have years of experience dealing with manufacturers and have developed good relationships with those who have proven that they step up to the plate to serve clients better. ➤ Choose your theater’s location carefully. What is the light like in the middle of the afternoon? Is it a high-traffic space? You can cut back on extra costs by eliminating the need for shades or soundproofing. Similarly, by choosing an area of your home that can be a multi-purpose area, you will find yourself using the system more often, therefore getting a better return on your investment. For instance, consider incorporating theater, music and gaming experiences all in the same room. www.homeimprovementmag.com

decordemon Away We Grow

A simple way to add some greenery to your home BY BRIAN PATRICK FLYNN PHOTOGRAPHY BY SARAH DORIO

Is your green thumb more Toxic Avenger than Jolly Green Giant? Under your supervision, are plants more likely to become 6 feet under than 6 feet tall? Mine, too! But Mother Nature will take no more excuses since the creation of the Food Map Container. Chief designer Jon L. Wilson, AIA, LEED AP, heads the California-based Food Map Design, a young multidisciplinary firm committed to residential food cultivation. Wilson’s industrial-chic containers arm green-space-lacking urbanites with a tool to grow their own food. If the Food Map Container can be a mobile food source, why can’t it also be an easy-care indoor/outdoor freestanding garden? I tried it out myself. The result? My greenery is still a bold, grassy hue, and I rarely even need to leave my living room to keep it that way. Success!

THE TOXIC AVENGER: Known for multiple counts of horticultural homicide, I assigned myself to this project. Do I like having my photo taken outside in 32-degree weather? No. Would I like to be published in print looking like an expert on gardening? Maybe.

SCENE 2

SCENE 1

SCENE 3 66

DIRTY DEEDS: Things only got messy when it came to adding potting soil. It clumps up inside the bag, so it’s necessary to mix it up before adding to the container. While my plants were thankful for the healthy soil, my hands were thankful for my $1.99 gardeningglove investment.

SCENE 4

TOTALLY PLASTIC: Food Map Containers come fully assembled with pre-drilled holes for drainage. The DIY-challenged haven’t a leg to stand on when it comes to planting this four-wheeled wonder. It’s okay to be plastic (when filling planters). Reduce, reuse and recycle with empty 2-liter bottles used as filler. This saves on the amount of soil you’ll need and it will make the overall load lighter. This works in regular planters as well.

HOW DOES YOUR GARDEN GROW?: As far as plant selection was concerned, I opted for liriope, which thrives both in shaded spaces and partial sunlight—excellent for adding some green to my studio or against my patio’s black-brown brick exterior. For a pop of bold color, I chose annuals and selected magenta and pink pansies. Since the liriope is super easy to care for, it made sense to stick with a green palette year round, then change up the color accordingly with seasonal flowers. My dog, Sebastian, approves of the botanical selections and stands guard in case of a squirrel attack.

SCENE 5 HEALTH ON WHEELS: It’s easy being green thanks to the Food Map Container’s lockable wheels. No need to take plants out of planters for doses of sunlight or visits with the hose—just lock/ unlock the wheels and push. After an hour-long trial run playing gardener, my mobile mini-landscape brought the outdoors in. My green friends get their daily dose of sunlight with a simple push from the studio to the great room. When thirsty, they simply stroll out the front door to the hose.

goes the saying. Those showers may also bring roof leaks and attendant damage. Chances are that those leaks have less to do with the shingle roof that you can see and more to do with roofflashing details that you may have never noticed. Flashing is the metal barrier that bridges the edge between the other roofing material and the structure of the home. When this detail is improperly installed, leaks are guaranteed, no matter how good the shingles.

Drip edge All along the perimeter of the roof there are gaps between the roof decking and the fascia board that trims out the eaves and gables. Drip edge is an L-shaped band of metal flashing. One surface caps the roof decking and the other extends down against the fascia. Properly installed, drip edge closes the gap between decking and fascia, provides extra support for the shingles and protects the fascia from overflowing gutters. It also keeps critters from gnawing their way into your attic by expanding the slot at the roof edge. It’s a pretty safe bet, though, that drip edge is absent from your home. Although required by roofing manufacturer’s specs, it is commonly neglected in the installation. Valley flashing Roofs have peaks and valleys. When roof planes join to form a valley, additional protection is required to prevent leaks in this trough. Valley flashing is sized according to the roof slope—the lower the slope, the greater water accumulation; the greater the water accumulation, the wider the valley flashing; the wider the flashing, the better protection (unless the installer uses the same width flashing in every application or nails the flashing in place in a manner that puts nail holes within the protected area). Given the complexity of some roof designs, valleys are often forced to act as collectors, accommodating a water load for quite an extensive time. Overbuilding the flashing in such www.homeimprovementmag.com

Kitchen Of Your Dreams

Head wall flashing Head walls meet the roof along a line parallel to the ground. Continuous flashing is required to kill the joint between the wall sheathing and the roof. Angled flashing is nailed to the wall sheathing with its lower panel extending over the shingle roof. Siding is then installed on the head wall covering the top of the metal flashing. The siding itself becomes “counter flashing,” blocking water from entering above the edge of the metal flashing. Sidewall flashing Sidewalls meet the roof along a line perpendicular to the ground. Whether lap sided or masonry, sidewalls require the most complex siding detail: step siding. Step siding is a compound angle piece of metal following the lines of both the sidewall and the roof. It is, effectively, a metal shingle. Step flashing units are installed along with the roofing shingles, each overlapping the previous unit – stepping up the roof – with the portion flat to the roof over one shingle and counter-flashed by the next.

april Tips for creating and maintaining a beautiful garden BY MARY KAY WOODWORTH

Spring is in the air! Dogwoods, azaleas and tulips are popping up everywhere. Garden centers will be full of beautiful annuals and vegetable plants, but plant with caution—April weather is fickle, and there’s always the possibility of an early spring cold snap. A good rule of thumb is to wait until after April 15 to plant summer veggies and flowers. Garden Maintenance

➤ Fertilize once tulips, daffodils and other bulbs have flowered. Snip off the seed heads, but let the foliage die naturally, as this helps to feed the bulb for next year. A layer of pine straw will camouflage the wilting leaves.

➤ Mulch well to conserve water and cut down on weeds. Mulch also helps prevent soil-borne disease from infecting the plants.

➤ Prune early bloomers such as forsythia, Carolina jessamine, quince and winter jasmine after they have bloomed.

➤ The end of April is the time to fertilize warm-season grasses (zoysia, Bermuda and centipede). Wait until about 50 percent of the lawn has greened up. Repeat in May and June. THIS MONTH’S WARM WEATHER

will usher in a variety of blooms, including azaleas. 72

ATLANTA HOME IMPROVEMENT APRIL 2010

0410_072-073_g planner.indd 72

➤ Fescue can be fertilized in April; then hold off until September. ➤ When mowing the lawn, raise the mowing level to reduce water needs. If mowed regularly, grass clippings that remain on the lawn (not caught www.homeimprovementmag.com

3/10/10 2:08:30 PM

in mower bag) will help mulch and not cause thatch!

➤ Till your vegetable-garden bed; add fertilizer and lime according to soil-test recommendations.

➤ Azaleas, rhododendrons and camellias can all be pruned after their flowers fade. Apply 16-4-8 fertilizer around the drip line of the shrubs now.

➤ Make gardening a family activity. Take a field trip to your local nursery and let each family member choose a plant or vegetable to make their own.

➤ Since more sunlight enters the house in springtime, make sure that your houseplants receive sufficient water. Once nighttime temperatures are consistently above 50 degrees, houseplants can be moved back 17-10103 HIM

outside. Make sure that they don’t get sunburned by being in too much direct sun. What to Plant

➤ Wait until mid-April to transplant vegetable seedlings into the garden.

➤ Choose summer annuals that will provide beautiful color from spring through hot summer days. Fertilize with a granular slow-release fertilizer when planting, and feed with a water-soluble fertilizer regularly (following label directions).

➤ April is a great time to plant many perennials and ornamental grasses. When selecting these plants, pay close attention to sun/shade requirements and mature size.

tweakends For Safety’s Sake Make your backyard kid- and pet-friendly BY MANDY RODGERS

Photos courtesy of Photographer Gregg Willett

As the weather becomes warmer, give both your children and pets a safe outdoor area to roam and play in by making sure your yard is hazard-free. Here is a list of dos and don’ts for creating a safer place to play. A clean garden • Pay attention to what is left out in your yard. Rakes, shovels and pieces of trash can injure a little one while he or she is running or playing in the grass. “Always put tools away as soon as you’re done with them,” says Brian Kuglich, program manager in home and community with the National Safety Council. • Trim hedges, remove prickly plants and cut the grass. If the grass is kept short, you can see what’s in the yard and avoid problems. • Look for organic fertilizers to use in the garden. Less-toxic substances prevent an animal from being unintentionally poisoned while exploring outside (see Pet Poison Alert sidebar). • Rethink your sidewalks and other hardscaped areas by paving instead of graveling. If decorating around a flowerbed with rocks, use smooth, large pieces instead of small, sharp ones. • Kuglich advises using wood mulch or rubberized mulch 74

underneath playground equipment to break kids’ falls. • While designing a porch or deck, “always have handrails on both sides of the stairs,” Kuglich says. He also recommends fixing broken steps immediately and keeping stairs and other changes in elevation well lit. • Treat your riding lawnmower like any motor vehicle: keep keys away from children and out of the ignition; never carry small children on a mower with you and keep kids inside while the mower is being operated. Pool safety • Use a self-closing, self-latching gate that is out of a child’s reach. • Restrict access through and over fence openings with chain links and other designs made specifically to keep small children or pets away. • Be sure the fence is high enough. • Check with your local municipality for acceptable heights under building code, as this can vary and is usually mandated by code. • Surround the entire pool area with a four-sided fence to prevent kids from entering the area from other ways. • Hire a professional fence contractor. • Place alarms on all entries into the pool area and install a key latch. www.homeimprovementmag.com

pet poison alert If your pet is poisoned, here are things to watch for and

DOLPHIN POOLS, INC. Where Quality Counts

how to take control of the situation:

➤ Watch for muscle tremors, seizures, vomiting, excessive licking of the mouth and swelling (if there is an insect bite).

➤ Don’t panic, but act quickly and efficiently. Call your vet immediately, having on-hand the list of symptoms your pet is showing and what they may have swallowed.

➤ The American Society For the Prevention Of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) provides lists of harmful plants, phone numbers to call for emergencies and instructions for a emergency kit to keep at home. Learn more at www.aspca.org.

Swimming Pools & Pool Remodeling • Install a safety vacuum release system, which shuts off suction if a drain is clogged and replace drain covers if damaged or broken. • Kiddie pools should be emptied when not in use— they can be just as dangerous as full-sized pools. Grill defense • Keep small children away from the outdoor kitchen/grill area while pre-heating or cooking, or supervise at all times. Pet precautions • Regularly clean the yard of pet waste for the safety of the curious children. • Make sure your yard has open space for a dog and child to run together. Another idea is to set up a small agility course for your dogs and a playground for your kids to play in. • If your dog will be outside alone, be sure there are no dangerous plants or items that could injure them if they are running or digging. Also, in the summer, the yard must have ample spots in the shade for your pets to rest if they become too hot. Designing your home’s interior— from the ground up By Kathy Kidwell and Taylor Dahl

hen building or remodeling a home, flooring materials are often chosen for

function and general aesthetic, sometimes without regard to the space’s other

interior-design elements. This common mistake can lead to a decrease in your

home’s resale value. Be aware that choosing a flooring material and design is your opportunity to create a cohesive, amazing interior with a floor you’ll be proud to show off. Whenever it’s

time for remodeling or designing the interior of your home, remember to start from the ground up and focus on flooring first.

The latest and greatest trends for pools By Blair Branch

With the sweltering Southern summers, pools in Atlanta serve a dual purpose of function and fun. A backyard isn’t complete without a place to cool off and, considering the extended warm-weather months, Atlanta is an ideal city in which to own a pool. But the pools of today aren’t the vinyl-lined, chlorine-filled ones of yesteryear. New materials, eco-friendly options and splurge-worthy gear are making waves in the pool world.

“Everyone gets handheld remotes for their system, he says. These remotes power everything—including the hot tub and cleaning system—and enable the user to set controls and timers much easier than having to put a hole through their kitchen wall.” In terms of shape, homeowners are opting for custom, free-form pools. “People are requesting personalized pools. We consider factors like viewpoints from the house, the water features they’ll have, the land in their backyard and the access from the house, Photo courtesy of Ed Castro Landscape

and then we design to suit their needs,” Hooker says. ATLANTA HOME IMPROVEMENT APRIL 2010

Nestled in the heart of Decatur is an entirely sustainable home that is the first in the Southeast to receive LEED Platinum certification for its green construction by the U.S. Green Building Council’s (USGBC) LEED for Homes program. The new 2-story, 2,800-square-foot residence is called the RainShine House—a name that reflects the butterfly roof that was designed to capture rainfall and the utilization of natural light to shine throughout the home. Of the numerous ecological features evident in the home’s structure, Nichiha Fiber Cement was selected as the exterior-siding product of choice due to the material’s environmental sustainability and contribution to LEED points. Furthermore, the home is certified by the Energy Star and EarthCraft programs.
