H

ave you ever heard the saying, “the cobbler's children have no shoes?” When it comes to the state of our home these days, that is how I feel. Each month we bring you beautiful homes that are decorated to perfection. After spending the last five months basically in my house with very few outings, I have realized its decor resembled that on the set of Everybody Loves Raymond, with the chair from Frasier. Yes, it has been since the early 90s since a few of our rooms have been updated. After a carefully thought out and very strategic conversation with my husband (the kind where you make him think it is all his idea), my early 90s drapes were removed and the furniture is getting some new love and upholstery. I even procured a new piece of art from my talented friend Kelly Fischer. So the light at the end of the tunnel in this Twilight Zone episode of 2020 is that my home is almost 1990s free! After talking to many of my clients and friends, I found that I am not alone in bringing my decor into the 21st century. Many people are spending more time at home and wanting to make it beautiful and up to date. I hope you get some great ideas from this issue. In a month usually spent getting kids ready for school and catching up on our tailgating recipes, the uncertainty of whether those events will happen this year leaves us a little more time to do the things we have put on the back burner for a while—even years. Use these days to update your happy spaces and just enjoy the life we have today as so much is changing. My Fridays, in the past, were usually spent eating lunch at a favorite place and visiting with friends. Today I spent it sitting in my outside office, catching up on work and enjoying my cold meatloaf sandwich and sun tea. Yes, sun tea...some things from the 80s and 90s we just have to keep. Have a great last few weeks of summer and stay safe and healthy. Mask up, Memphis, and let’s get through this and coast into fall, possibly enjoying some football and tailgates from our updated living spaces. And if you haven’t enjoyed a meatloaf sammy or a cold glass of sun tea in a while, I highly recommend you do so soon!

“Every room should have something exciting in it.” These words form one of Tara Engelberg’s interior design mantras; a tenet that rings true in every room of the Oxford, MS, home she recently completed for a family of five.

E

ngelberg, owner and creative director of Tara Felice Interiors, set out to update the classic residence right off the town’s square while respecting its traditional architecture and cottage-like vibe. She points to the project to illustrate the fact that a home doesn’t have to be large to be well appointed. “I loved working with a house with character and great bones. I think it goes to show that you don’t need to have a massive house to have an amazing, warm and inviting space. In a smaller home, the decorating budget can go further, making it possible to have more quality pieces, since you need fewer of them. It allows me to focus on furnishing the house really well and to really hone in on the details.” Previous owners had remodeled the home a number of years ago, but the drab colors and Tuscan-style materials didn’t keep in the character of the house or seem appropriate for a vibrant family with three school-age children. “The house has amazing windows and was getting beautiful light, but between the heavy curtains and the paint colors, you couldn’t see it,” says Engelberg. “When someone tried to ‘modernize’ the house before, what they did just didn’t add anything.”

he transformation starts from the front door. Engelberg convinced the new homeowners to rearrange the living room’s layout to make up for the lack of an entryway. “The old layout wasn’t bad, but I wanted to create some definition because the front door opens straight into the living room. I like having a little foyer feel, so I wanted to put the sofa facing the fireplace. I like it when you come in and you have a moment to feel like you’re in the entrance to the home,” she says. She freshened up the fireplace by painting its dark wood white and replacing travertine with tumbled marble. Then came the aforementioned excitement: black-and-white resin nesting coffee tables, a colorful Michael Barringer original painting from L Ross Gallery, and a chrome armchair upholstered in a cheerful orange that echoes the tones in the art.

The pop of orange in the living room is but a foreshadowing of what’s in store in the adjacent dining room. Formerly painted blue and nondescript, the walls now sport a vibrant orange grasscloth wallpaper, set off by bright white trim. Asked if the bold color was a hard sell to her clients, Engelberg says they happily agreed to her suggestion. “They were into it!,” she recalls. “They gave me a lot of creative freedom and listened to my ideas and reasoning, and they love the room.” The bright grasscloth wallpaper was a perfect option, she adds, because it provides both warm color and texture. While every room should have excitement, not everything in the room can be a focal point, Engelberg explains. There needs to be balance. “Whenever I do bright colors, I try to temper it, like in cooking when you mix eggs into hot ingredients slowly so they don’t ruin. Most everything else should be calm. The dining room rug is solid white wool and the chairs have a very simple ticking stripe that looks like vintage French napkins.”

n the kitchen, Engelberg decided to take the wall color in the opposite direction. Previously painted dark blue, the now-white walls set a clean, bright backdrop for the reimagined room. The homeowners opted to paint the existing wall and base cabinets white, but the designer urged them to tear out the kitchen island and replace it with a larger one that would provide storage as well as a seating area large enough to accommodate the whole family. Bathed in blue with a butcher block countertop, it’s the perfect spot for a quick breakfast before school or work. The kitchen’s new flooring, oversized black and white hex tiles, provides vintage character, and the open baker’s rack is an attractive storage solution. An abstract painting by Melissa Dunn, also from L Ross Gallery, is a true standout against the crisp white of the wall.

ngelberg says the master bedroom underwent one of the biggest transformations of any space in the home. She took the wall color from dreary to inviting and rethought the window treatments to bring more light in and improve the view. “This room has an amazing view and beautiful trees and greenery, so we took out plantation shutters to open it up,” she says, explaining that she prefers simpler window coverings to the often-used shutters. “[Shutters] look busy for no reason.” Her designs tend to feature simpler window treatments like panels and Roman shades in neutral colors. “I love their casual, relaxed feel,” she adds. Because the room isn’t perfectly symmetrical, Engelberg decided not to pair nightstands by the bed. Instead, she opted for a different low chest on either side, a choice that provided needed storage in the older home with limited closet space. The fact that both chests are similar in height allowed the pair of angular bedside lamps placed on them to work beautifully. The room’s overall feel is serene, thanks to the simple white bedding and neutral rug. Pops of color come from the lamps as well as accent pillows in a geometric print, orange and blue. “I’m obsessed with blue right now,” Engelberg admits. “I think it’s a great neutral that goes with just about anything.” And then there’s the art. Two pieces grace the room: a Lisa Weiss painting hangs over the bed, and a large, square work by Nashville native Kit Reuther graces the opposing wall. According to Engelberg, the Reuther work from David Lusk Gallery was a must-have. “I told the homeowner, ‘If you only buy one piece of art for your home, it has to be this one. It is so beyond perfect in the bedroom—the shape, the colors, the serenity.”

ext to the master suite is the den, the family’s hangout area. Here, Engelberg again removed blinds to open up the view of the home’s treed yard and repeated the blue, orange and white color theme. She equipped the space with a game table so the kids have a place to do homework or work a puzzle. The family can relax in deep armchairs covered in soft corduroy or on the comfortable sectional. It’s that kind of comfort that drives Engelberg’s design. Having battled and beaten cancer a few years ago, she says she now knows the true importance of environment. “Where you live, what your space looks like, feels like, completely impacts your mental health, your physical health, your relationships with people around you. There’s such a strong connection. So I always look at that when I’m looking at someone’s house. It’s not just that we have to make it look pretty; it’s how can we make it live well for you...The rooms you spend the most time in have to feel good.”

TARA'S TIPS More thoughts from designer Tara Engelberg

ON LIGHT FIXTURES “I love lighting. Lighting, to me, is like the jewelry of the room. You can get bold with it. You can get creative with it. You can get delicate with it because chances are, kids and dogs aren’t going to knock it over.” ON WINDOW TREATMENTS “I don’t like big, fussy window treatments. I don’t think they should be the focal point; the window and the view and the furniture in the room should be the focal points.” ON ACCESSORIES “I love going to estate sales and the one thing I always look for at estate sales is brass candlesticks. You can have a super modern room with everything new and you add a little patina in a brass candlestick and it changes the feel of a room instantly. Most of my design is for families, so I feel like adding a little touch of vintage or antique gives a comfortable feel.” ON MIXING VS. MATCHING “My favorite way to create a personal space with layers and depth is by mixing textures and elements. A room shouldn’t look like you purchased everything from a page of a catalog, or from the same store even.” August 2020 • athomemms.com | 37

E N T E R TA I N I N G

This year, I was inspired by a dreamy

summer vacation to Martha’s Vineyard, but since traveling right now is rather difficult... We brought the Cape to Memphis!

the menu. First things first, I called my friends over at Cousins Maine Lobster -- This Shark Tank-famous food truck roams the city and beyond serving an incredible assortment of Maine lobster delicacies, all featuring sweet, tender and succulent lobster from Maine. Guests dined on Cousins’ delicious Maine Rolls, Maine lobster served chilled with a touch of mayo on a toasted New England split-top roll, each adorned with a bright lemon wedge. The menu also included a luxurious 4-5oz Maine lobster tail, served in shell, accompanied by warm drawn butter and hot & crispy tater tots-- the best I've ever had. A week before the event, we hosted a blind wine tasting to figure out which rosé we would be serving this year. We included a handful of brands, but last year's winner took home the blue ribbon again. French Blue rosé is ideal for a warm, summer day outside with friends. It's dry, crisp and refreshing, perfect for summer heat, and the bottle is pretty cute, too! And last but not least, dessert! One of my favorite bakeries in the city is Sweet Lala's. Not only are their cookies addicting, but they are also my niece and nephew’s top go-to treat. And that says a lot coming from a two-year-old and five-year-old who have had sweets from every bakery in Memphis! For the party, we had their humble pies. Sweet Lala’s starts these with their incredible cookie dough and folds in delicious berry filling to create the cutest humble pies we have ever seen.

the table. I love working with local vendors, so for the picnic spread, I reached for my casual, yet fun plates and platters from Skyros Designs. Skyros has everything from dinnerware to linens and glassware, all handmade in Portugal, but the company’s home base is right here in Memphis. With numerous collections to choose from, I picked Cantaria. Perfect for everyday dining, the casual collection features organic edges and comes in a wide array of colors. I paired the dinner plates in Morning Sky, the perfect shade of light blue, with a matte white salad plate. Matte white is the newest color to join the collection and I love the finish it brings to the table. The matte texture really lets the food be the star of the show while still giving a crisp finish to your tabletop. The Cantaria centerpiece bowl is one not to be without. Just right for a summer salad or pasta, the unique shaped bowl is wonderful for feasts year round. And finally, the adorable ramekins were made to hold those perfectly golden tots. Skyros wine glasses were perfect for the event; the unique angles looked wonderful in the sunlight, creating such fun reflections. And I cannot forget about the glass compotes which were ideal for holding the lobster tails. Adding the perfect touch of height to the table, they really helped bring it all together. For flowers, as always, I headed over to Garden District and grabbed some bright local zinnias and gomphrena to sprinkle around the picnic and party. The bright colors paired perfectly with the blue striped linen napkins and white quilt.

the attire.

In keeping with the summer garden party theme, we wore light cotton sundresses. I reached for my MIRTH Antibes dress; it is so lightweight and has incredible details and texture. The best part is that it was designed with a purpose. Each MIRTH piece is handmade. The company works with organizations across India to help sustain the heritage craft and provide better lives and meaningful work for the weavers, who often are women, and their families. I love how MIRTH is dedicated to making a positive and lasting social impact while producing exceptional pieces that are easy to throw on and feel good, both inside and out.

While this year's small gathering was very different than last year's larger soiree, it was such a treat to get to share these precious moments with my closest friends. It’s times like these that make you appreciate and cherish the ones you love dearly!

MAGNOLIA and MAY TEXT BY LESLEY HARRIS COLVETT

agnolia & May is the delightful new restaurant that Tracey and Jeffrey Dunham, with their son Chip and his wife Amanda, opened in East Memphis. Big sunflowers and a sprawling, vibrant garden that greets you as you walk up to the restaurant reflects the fresh dishes and cocktails featured on the menu. The Dunhams were owners of The Grove Grill, and Magnolia & May, which opened May 24 is a concept that has been in the works since March of last year. Magnolia & May features a casual, bar-style atmosphere with country brasserie flair. “We take rustic dishes from around the world with Asian, French and Middle Eastern influences using seasonal and local ingredients,” Chip says. The menu is diverse, and Chip enjoys every opportunity to cook using the crops of tomatoes, peppers and other vegetables and herbs that are growing around the restaurant. “We change the menu every day, and currently people love the buffalo broccoli, which is fried broccoli tossed in a buffalo sauce, our black-eyed pea falafel with feta, and the double patty cheeseburger topped with a crispy cheese skirt. And we have a delicious vegan burger,” Chip says. The building, previously Tracey Dunham’s father’s business office, was built around the 1920s. “One 54 | At Home Memphis & Mid South • August 2020

afternoon we were sitting at this office and we decided to make it a restaurant. We called Mary and Reb Haizlip; they came over and we started the discussion. We love this location and East Memphis,” Jeffrey says. “We wanted to have a large enough bar within the dining room, and Reb Haizlip came up with a number of different configurations for it...and we came up with this, that can seat 17 at the bar,” Jeffrey says. The shiny, sturdy bar top is a conversation piece its own as it is actually an old bowling lane from Imperial Bowling on Summer Avenue. The sturdy wood brackets that construct the bar shelves are reclaimed pieces of wood that actually came out of the building’s walls. Chip describes the ambiance as rustic and fun, and wants everyone to feel comfortable when at Magnolia & May. The space features a hodgepodge of art and decor, including a framed Tennessee state map that was originally hanging when the space was an office building, and a wall of whiskey barrels. The restaurant is filled with beautiful wood of all styles. Carpenter Ben Homolka helped Jeffrey refurbish green, red oak planks that he had, and along with a team of other carpenters they trimmed the walls and windows with the oak wood. Homolka also made the wood dining tables inside the restaurant.

The bar manager, Taylor Mitchell, creates custom cocktails and delicious frozen drinks that utilize and reflect seasonal flavors. “We use ingredients that are fresh and in right now,” Mitchell says. The frozen cocktails featured this summer include a watermelon mint margarita, a cantaloupe sage slushy with a sage simple syrup, and a non-alcoholic strawberry lemonade. “Our cocktail list right now is very ‘summer’ and very light...one of my favorite cocktails is the Bitter/ Sweet,” Mitchell says. The patio and front porch are comfortable and conducive to social distancing, “People are liking the outdoor seating, and I think everyone is very comfortable in the environment that we have created,” Chip says. Despite opening during the Covid-19 pandemic, Magnolia & May has been fully embraced and enjoyed by Memphians. “We have gotten a lot of positive feedback, and I can’t wait to watch it grow and get back to some sense of normalcy with people in the dining room, the bar and the patio,” Chip says. Brunch is now available at Magnolia & May, and Jeffrey says that this fall the restaurant plans to offer a fast, casual lunch.
