AsThought architecture from concept to built form Our main goal is to describe the design process, the architectural solutions and the detailing choices of a built work in a chronological order. The dream – that is also the ambition – is to tune at the best the structure of this on-line manual and to spread around its template in order to amplify the power of collecting and publishing in a such huge way that in a few years we could arrive at the largest open source and most browsed utility for architectural students not only in Europe.

History of Commission:

A.l.e.r. Pavia opened a competition for a project to do in Vigevano, in Pietrasana square, and

Luciano Giorgi was the winner. The general aims of the A.l.e.r. Pavia project are the same as the

general aims of a ‘coolhouse’, using passive and low energy techniques to provide comfortable

conditions for occupants. Ground cooling pipe systems were always seen as an important

component of this in all ‘coolhouse’ projects.

Main architectural ideas:

An architectural plan that becomes an excuse for a new “contemporary garden”, a huge green

block, almost a topiary sculpture of a project of new sensibility, including architecture, garden art

and sculpture, architecture - garden, surrounded by a small garden, in which the public can

easily identify with respect for nature.

Project description

‘Be natural as natural being’ The building is located in the middle of homogeneous residential suburb from the mould of the garden city, without architectural quality. The rectangular plan, on double stories, is closed on all sides from a green curtain that is made from a thick covering of “parthenocissus tricuspidata”, it’s a climbing deciduous that changes each seasons. The project come from the consciousness that the nature, raw material for the construction of the landscape and of the gardens, is an alive thing, changeable. An architectural plan that becomes an excuse for a new “contemporary garden”, a huge green block, almost a topiary sculpture of a project of new sensibility, including architecture, garden art and sculpture, architecture - garden, surrounded by a small garden, in which the public can easily identify with respect for nature. Inside of the building a rectangular plan, the partitions are made for deduction from the four patios and for the introduction of two blocks: services and vertical connections. This facade is more than a symbol of a strategy for the fusion between nature and architecture, it’s follows the ecological idea about the air-conditioning of the building. he “ parthenocissus tricuspidata”, luxuriant in the summer months, ‘will mitigate the effect of major insulation, shading the patios, really condensers and storages of fresh air that’ll flow inside the building; in the winter, falling the leaves, all the openings ‘ll be show their fronts, and from inside of the building it’ll be possible to keep all the rays. the main entrance on the south-east corner, is directed to the pedestrian entrance of the big court, it’s indicated from an open porch on the dehor, platform of the fountain. The ground floor is like a unique space, deformed from the opaque volumes of the services and vertical connections and from the light volume of the big patio that joins the fours floors. The first floor is divided in more clear partitions, the patios are more and more, to cover the absence of openings to the outside, but only to the same patios; this creates filtered spaces from noises and dins from the street.

Selected essay

Circolab: a community centre in Vigevano Sometimes the most interesting things appear in very unlikely situations, maybe because they are useful and necessary: a building surrounded by ten other buildings and two hundred and twenty public dwellings. Right in the middle to Pietrasana quarter in Vigevano, they’ve just opened this building that changes its skins with the season, thanks to climbing plants going through metal cables mediating the grey colour around it. The outside is gentle and discrete, while inside there’s a lot of natural light and the spaces are well arranged to welcome a diversified community in need of a meeting point. At the launch there were dances and songs on the ground floor, while on the first floor it was possible to visit the different spaces set up for different activities, a nursery will probably be one of them. This story, whose protegonists are young architects, seems to tell us that in Italy it’s possible to build property without wasting money. mood, june 2005, by gianmaria sforza Circolab - Luciano Giorgi / lgb-architetti

Lgb-architetti was founded in 1996 by Luciano Giorgi, the Studio has been nominated several times for prestigious National prizes. their projects have been published in several national & international archtectural magazines. In year 2000 Liliana Bonforte begins to collaborate in the Studio. In 2004 a new logo is created for the activity, lgb architetti, a brand which concentrate mainly in commercial architecture focusing in luxury brands.Their projects addresses with the time towards a more critical architecture being aware that every project needs to be treated each time as a unique opportunity to do something exceptional. This brings the Studio to work in a very eclectic way, generating spaces and buildings free of any censure nor obligations, trying to satisfy the commitment wishes in a very personal way. Luciano Giorgi was born in pavia in 1966. He studied with achille castiglioni, michael alder, joao luis carrilho da graca and others. After conceiving his master degree in architecture (with cino zucchi and pietro nicolini), he obtained the trading certification. In 1996 he opens his atelier in pavia. Between the 1996 and the 1999 he collaborates with ag fronzoni. In the meanwhile he develops his own projects. In 2000 he starts his collaboration with liliana bonforte. In 2003 he is selected as finalist for the ‘Italian gold medal architecture’ prize with the project ‘house on the alps’. In 2006 he is selected as finalist for the ‘Italian gold medal architecture’ prize and in 2007 he wins the ‘in/arch ance’ prize with the project ‘centro sociale_circolab’, realised is Vigevano. In 2008 he wins ex-equo the international competition for the requalification of four typical farmhouses in tuscany, sponsored by fondi rustici peccioli s.r.l. His projects are widely published on national and international magazines. Liliana Bonforte was born in 1971 in turin. Architecture, adventure and travel as a way of living

Born in Funchal, Madeira, Portugal on August 19, 1991. Started studyng architecture at Faculdade de Arquitectura in Lisbon, Portugal in 2009. At this moment doing the erasmus programme at Politecnico di Milano as architecture student in first semester of first master year 2012-2013.

Be doing the erasmus programme in Milan, Italy, has been a amazing experience and very enriching for architectural level, and have chosen this course, mobility became even more interesting because of the opportunity to “feel” and “touch” real architecture, contacting with an existing building, and its creator.

Therefore, I’m very grateful for having participated in this project ‘Asthought’ and to have the opportunity to know Luciano Giorgi as architect.
