AsThought architecture from concept to built form Our main goal is to describe the design process, the architectural solutions and the detailing choices of a built work in a chronological order. The dream – that is also the ambition – is to tune at the best the structure of this on-line manual and to spread around its template in order to amplify the power of collecting and publishing in a such huge way that in a few years we could arrive at the largest open source and most browsed utility for architectural students not only in Europe.

Project description

‘A warehouse for the storage of boats and canoes at the service of local multi-purpose activities related to boating or other municipal events. The place is the Lido Guzzi Lario with green areas in the park and the delicate relationship with the shore of Lake Como.

The volume is distributed in two distinct pavilions, contiguous but slipped on their abutments they cover similar area but are independent identities. In this way, they mitigate their volumetric presence.

The shape of the buildings is typical of simple construction with a pitched roof, the archetype of the “house.” The pavilions are placed longitudinally with respect to the shore and on the west length of the building is a continuous glass surface employed to enjoy an uninterrupted view from inside.

Natural and forced ventilation systems have been provided for in this building. Adequate thermal insulation has been designed specifically to handle direct exposure to sunlight in the winter and summer solstices. The materials for the construction of the pavilions are based on maximum simplicity.

The limited scores of structural masonry on view are made of concrete footprint formwork type OSB (wood chips pressed) that returns to the surface a smooth, natural appearance. The roof cover reproduces the typical material of the historic ferry piers on Lake Como, a simple galvanized corrugated sheet. The outer shape of a gabled pavilion is entirely covered in green. This has been done to reduce the impact of the built volumes in the park and reinterprets local customs. A green coating made from plants of Ficus Pumila is proposed in a new way, on a very simple building and contemporary shape. This method of coating is characteristic of walls, embankments and pavilions of the most important historic villas on Lake Como.’

ACT_Romegialli

ACT_Romegialli is a collaborative design practise focusing on Architecture, Urban design and Interior design. The practice is made up of three principle designers; Gianmatteo Romegialli, Angela Maria Romegialli and Erika Gaggia. Gianmatteo and Angela founded ACT Romegialli in Morbegno in 1994. The company has taken on many projects over the years across Europe, particularly some very diverse architecture projects. Their architecture portfolio ranges from private homes to public landscape, sacred sanctuaries to mountain shelters and civic centres to recreational space. They have recently been recognised with an honourable mention in the 2012 International Piranesi awards for their project Padiglione Canottieri Moto Guzzi (Hall Rowers).

Book editor presentation

Sophie Griffiths I am an Australian living and studying in Milan. Coming from an Architecture and Interior Design background, I am as equally interested in what’s inside a building as how its exterior is planned. Human encounters of the interior are very important, I believe design can facilitate or hinder these interactions.

I favor clean, simple and smart aesthetics and natural and sustainable materials. I am inspired by Scandinavian design that encompasses this design aesthetic.
